Thuja Brabant when planted in a permanent place. Thuja Brabant - planting and growing, using the plant in the design of garden plots

In order to make your garden perfect, you have to try. After all, when planning personal plot many details must be taken into account. So, in landscape design today, evergreen coniferous crops are widely used, including western thuja. They are formed by rock gardens and hedges, equip alleys and group compositions, and such plants are also used for single plantings. The topic of our conversation today will be a comparison of thuja Brabant and Smaragd in landscape design. We will tell you which one is better, and what are the differences between them.

In design, Smaragd and Brabant are commonly used to form hedges. Both varieties of thuja are widely used by gardeners and landscape designers. A hedge can be a wonderful addition to your backyard, not only is it an important design detail, but it also helps protect you from dust and snow.

What are the differences between Brabant and Smaragd?

Both of these plants are western arborvitae. They are tall, but Smaragd grows a little slower than Brabant. So for those who want to get a live fence as soon as possible, it is better to find nothing in the design of the site Brabant. If you provide them good care, then they will be able to add from thirty-five to fifty centimeters a year. Such trees have a columnar crown shape, and in adult plants it can be one and a half meters in diameter.

What qualities are better for Smaragd for design? As for this type of western thuja, such a culture has other advantages. Its crown looks cone-shaped, and remains especially saturated in color in the cold season, while maintaining a juicy dark green color. Thuya Smaragd is distinguished by a slightly slower growth rate, which in some cases can play into the hands of gardeners. After all, such trees do not need to be cut very often, unlike Brabant.

As for the use in landscape design of Smaragd and Brabant, both varieties of thuja, as we have already found out, are used in the organization of hedges. They can be shaped - sheared, or unshaped - free-growing. Tui of the Smaragd species look better when growing free-growing hedges, because they are less branchy. In addition, the cone-shaped crowns of such trees do not begin to close over time.

View of thuja Brabant better themes, which is more successful when cutting. Thus, the annual pruning of these trees in March, as well as in August, will stimulate the active interweaving of their branches, which in turn will ensure the creation of a dense impenetrable wall.

Features of landing western thuja Brabant and Smaragd

Both of these varieties of thuja are planted on the plot in the spring or in the middle of autumn. Immediately before starting work, it is worth noting a straight line on the site, it is along it that you need to land. The easiest way to mark the line is by stretching a rope between the pegs or stretching it over the surface of the soil.

Focusing on the intended line, you need to dig holes. Each of them should be about seventy centimeters deep. And the width of each hole depends on the size of the rhizome with some margin.

Planting trees should be carried out at the same interval. When forming a hedge from Brabant seedlings, it is best to place them at a distance of one meter from each other. After all, in a year the plants will have time to grow fifteen centimeters wide or more. As for the planting of Smaragda, the interval between the trees may be smaller - seventy centimeters.

Although both varieties of western thuja are quite unpretentious to the characteristics of the soil, those readers of "Popular about Health" who own a plot with poor soil should fill the planting holes with a soil mixture made up of turf, sand, compost, and peat. With severe clay soil it is necessary to lay a layer of drainage at the bottom of the pits.

In the event that the seedlings were purchased in containers, you need to release the rhizomes immediately before planting in open ground. The root neck of the plants should be level with the soil. The soil is mulched after planting.

Features of caring for thuja western Smaragd and Brabant

In order to get a bright and juicy hedge from thuja trees, you need to properly and systematically care for them. Plants need to be periodically watered, fed and cut regularly. In the event that long-acting fertilizers were applied under the seedlings during planting, there is a need to feed them only in the third year - in the spring. In this case, you need to use fertilizers that are designed specifically for thuja.

The soil around the plants needs periodic loosening and weeding.

In the first years of cultivation, it is worth covering the thuja with special awnings so that the scorching sun does not harm them. For the winter, it’s even better to wrap them with light fabrics, because otherwise bright greens can turn yellow and dry out. It is clear that there will be little benefit from Smaragd in design and Brabant in this case, so it is better to prevent such difficulties.

Pruning the crown of such thuja should be done twice a season - in March and also in August. During this procedure, dried and unattractive branches should be cut from the tree. When forming a crown, it is worth focusing on your taste preferences. Variety Brabant needs to be cut more radically, as it grows much more actively than Smaragd. For the same reason, Smaragda trees can be given the most different forms that will last a long time.

It should be noted that the thuja western Brabant is less frost-resistant than Smaragd. But in principle, both varieties of trees need shelter for the winter. Thuja Brabant is desirable to cover well with spruce branches.

An evergreen plant will decorate any personal plot. Bulky spruces are increasingly being replaced by representatives of the Cypress family, including the thuja western Brabant. Its juicy color is pleasing to the eye regardless of the season, and a slender crown is an excellent element of any flower bed.

Cones of thuja western

The plant exists in the form of a shrub or tree. AT comfortable conditions the height of the arborvitae reaches 20 m, but in our region they grow no more than 5 m. The lush crown has a conical shape up to 4 m in diameter. Branches cover the entire trunk to the ground.

The needles are directed upwards, the structure resembles scales.

The color of thuja Brabant ranges from rich green to light and even yellowish hues, sometimes with golden tips.

The plant blooms in spring, after which small cones are formed in the shape of an egg. Brown. Propagation is good, most often by cuttings.

Unpretentious to growing conditions, tolerates frost well. However, the plant will not survive if the temperature drops below 30ºC or the area is too dry. He loves moisture, but feels uncomfortable during a period of prolonged thaw with sudden changes in temperature.

Brabant is a fast-growing thuja, annually adding 40 cm in length and 15 cm in width. Due to this advantage, it has found wide application in the landscape as a hedge. The rapid growth of thuja implies frequent pruning of shoots and crown formation. Haircut should take place 2-3 times a year.

Planting a plant

Tui cuttings western Brabant It is best to plant in open ground in the spring, but it is also possible in early autumn. The main thing is that the plant has a month left for rooting before the frosts come.

Thuja is unpretentious to soils, but feels better in fertile soil. You should prepare the mixture in advance, taking peat, sand and leafy soil in a ratio of 1: 1: 2.

Poorly tolerates the burning sun throughout the day or deep shadow. It is worth giving preference to a place slightly shaded, but do not forget that the plant is photophilous.

The diameter of the planting hole must match the root system. As a rule, a meter is enough. In heavy soils, drainage should be used:

  • expanded clay;
  • pebbles;
  • broken brick.

When planting a thuja, the root collar should be in line with the ground. Excessive lifting or deepening will lead to the death of the tree. Before planting the plant, it is necessary to remove the ropes, burlap and other fasteners with which it was connected from it. Remove from the container carefully so as not to damage root system. Lightly dry the earthen ball without destroying it.

Thuja western Brabant

The distance between the trees should be left 3-4 meters, if planting takes place in several rows, then the row spacing should be 7-8 meters. In order for the thuja to form a dense hedge, they should be planted at a distance of half a meter from each other.

If the area of growth of the western thuja is subject to strong winds, you should tie it up. To do this, three wooden pegs are driven around the trunk, which are tied together with a rope, nylon or other strong, but soft material. The trunk should not be fixed tightly, it must remain flexible under the influence of the wind so that the plant is formed strong and hardy.

Care for thuja Brabant

Tui Brabant is not needed special care, the tree perfectly adapts to growing conditions. Special attention should be given in the first months after landing in open ground. Regular watering is required (once a week is enough). One tree needs about 10 liters of water, and in hot, dry weather, irrigation is carried out every 3-4 days at the rate of 15 liters per tree.

When the soil dries out a little after moistening, it should be loosened. The roots of the western thuja are located close to the surface, so do not deepen the tool by more than 10 cm. You can mulch with peat, bark, wood chips or compost. Mulch layer 7 cm.

Young trees or thuja shrubs (the first two years of life) need to be covered, protecting them from severe frosts and bright sunlight. To do this, use spruce branches or kraft paper. mature plant no such procedure is required. However, do not forget to tie up the branches so that they do not break under the weight of snow.

Preparing conifers for winter: how to cover thuja

With the onset of spring, mineral supplement thuja. Can be used complex fertilizers for coniferous plants. It is necessary to inspect and remove damaged, dry or diseased shoots.

For 2-3 years of life of the western thuja, pruning can be carried out. For this purpose, a garden pruner is suitable, powerful, leaving no damage to the cuts. At right choice tool, the cut point will soon be delayed, and will not interfere with the development of the tree. Pruning is best done in early summer, when all the branches and buds have formed. Repeated haircut takes place in early autumn.

Regular pruning of the shoots will form a dense crown. Such a procedure will give the plant an aesthetic appearance, so that the thuja becomes a real decoration, both in the garden and in the city flower bed, especially when growing hedges.

The cuttings remaining after pruning 10-15 cm in length do not need to be thrown away. They can be dipped in a glass of water, where they will quickly take root. Such a plant should be transplanted into a pot, and in the second year safely planted in open ground. For prevention and treatment, fungicides for coniferous plants are used, for example Fitosporin, Alirin, Gamair, the Bordeaux mixture has proven itself well.

Diseases

Yellow needles at thuja western Brabant

Poor care for thuja Brabant often leads to the appearance of a fungal disease:

  • mold;
  • rotting of the root system;
  • stem rot.

Such lesions in the early stages are almost invisible, so it is necessary to inspect the plant more often. If an uncharacteristic plaque appears on the trunk and branches, or the needles change their color, you should immediately start treating the tree.

Pests

Aphid on thuja western Brabant

Among the pests of the western thuja, the most common are:

  • moth moth;
  • scab;
  • leaflet;
  • spider mite;
  • false shield;
  • thuja beetle.

It is necessary to regularly treat thuja Brabant with insecticides, such as Fufanon, Aktara, Decis pro. To prevent the occurrence spider mite you can spray it with water.

The hardiness, frost resistance and unpretentiousness of the plant to growing conditions made thuja Brabant a favorite of landscape designers. Due to the pliability in shearing, shrubs and trees of this species are given a wide variety of shapes, which is only enough for the gardener's imagination.

Video "How to propagate and grow thuja"

Tui trees and shrubs are very popular among gardeners due to their lush greenery and lush crown shape. Planting thuja Brabant and providing necessary care these fast-growing crops, you can soon create amazing garden compositions on the site. It's popular unpretentious plant used to form fairly dense green hedges that delight the eye throughout the year.

Growing conditions

Spring work on planting a representative of the cypress family is carried out when the soil is completely warm. In autumn, the conifer needs at least a month for the seedling to take root before the first frost. A plant planted outdoors in August will require less watering. This is facilitated by the cool sun and frequent autumn rains.

Thuja Brabant prefers fairly bright lighting, but may be in partial shade for some time. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight leads to increased evaporation of moisture from the needles, which affects the decorativeness of the plant. A dehydrated tree has a harder time surviving the winter. Conifers placed in the shade will not be able to grow a thick and lush crown. It is also necessary to take care of protecting plants from strong winds.

It is advisable to hide young plants that have not reached a height of one and a half meters under an awning from the hot sun, and for the winter it is useful to cover them with breathable covering material from frost.

Soil preparation and planting

Thuja Brabant is undemanding to the soil composition, but a carefully prepared substrate for planting will have a beneficial effect on its rooting. Receiving sufficient nutrients, the tree will grow a gorgeous green crown.

To obtain a fertile earth mixture, each seedling will need:

  • turf or leaf land (2 parts);
  • peat (1 part);
  • humus (1 part);
  • sand (1 part);
  • nitroammophoska (up to 500 g).

Most often, thuja western Brabant is used by gardeners and designers to create hedges. Therefore, to obtain a fairly dense decorative wall a distance between plants of 0.5 to 1 meter should be observed. To create an alley, the interval between trees is maintained from 5 to 8 m.

The size of the planting hole depends on the size of the earthen coma of the seedling, which should fit freely into it. The depth can reach 70–75 cm, the width is about a meter. By placing conifers on heavy soil with high humidity take care of drainage. Expanded clay or pebbles can be poured at the bottom of the pit with a layer of up to 20 cm, it is allowed to use broken brick. Before planting an earthen clod of the western thuja, it is recommended to dry it without violating its integrity.

The process of planting a decorative conifer is not difficult.

  1. Part of the prepared substrate is laid on the drainage layer.
  2. The seedling goes deep into the hole so that the root collar remains at ground level.
  3. On the sides and top, the rhizome is sprinkled with a ready-made fertile mixture.
  4. The soil around the plant is compacted and spilled with water.

Reproduction at home

When the conifer is propagated by seeds, the plant loses its decorative properties. Thuja Brabant is fairly easy to propagate by cuttings. Trimmed lignified branches at least 40 cm long will quickly take root if placed for a while in a container of water. Cuttings with roots are planted in a pot. A young seedling is not recommended to be transferred to open ground in the fall. It is better to wait until the plant gets stronger, and in the spring it is transplanted to the main place of growth.

plant care

During the first month, the conifer requires weekly watering. Each plant consumes at least 10 liters of water. In the event of a prolonged drought, the volume of watering increases to 20 liters per week.

Thuja needles evaporate a large number of moisture, therefore, regular sprinkling will have a beneficial effect on the juiciness of the green mass.

  • Thuja Brabant has a superficial root system, so loosening after watering should be done carefully.
  • Mulching the soil with peat or compost will not only protect the roots and add required amount nutrients but also prevent excessive evaporation of water.
  • In the spring, during the first two years after planting, the plants are fed with combined fertilizers, which must contain magnesium. During the summer, top dressing can be repeated in June and July.
  • With the onset of spring, dried and diseased shoots are removed from the thuja.

Under the weight of snow, the branches of the plant can break, so it is recommended to tie them with a rope for the winter. It is advisable to cover the roots of the conifer with spruce branches.

It is not difficult to care for the plant at home. For thuja western grown in a pot, it is recommended to maintain temperature regime in the range from 10°C to 15°C. Brabant prefers diffused lighting or partial shade. Required timely watering, spraying needles and plant nutrition. In summer, it is advisable to take a pot of thuja outside to a cool, shady place.

A change in the color of the needles and the fall of damaged shoots indicate diseases that can be caused by fungi or pests. To prevent fungal diseases, it is necessary to adhere to the basic rules of planting and caring for the plant. At the first signs of diseases characteristic of coniferous trees, it is necessary to treat Brabant thuja with special preparations. Spraying with preparations "Fufanon" or "Aktellik" is carried out in May.

A haircut

For the formation of hedges and garden compositions, the plant must be regularly sheared. To create a dense green wall, it is enough to adjust the shape of the conifer twice a year: at the beginning of June and at the end of August. Regularly shortening the top and trimming side shoots, you can maintain the desired height and shape of the ornamental plant.

Thuja Brabant remarkably tolerates pruning, which is carried out starting from the third year of life. A powerful pruner should evenly cut off the tops of the branches, without unnecessarily injuring them. Only a third of the shoot is sheared so that the plant does not weaken.

Among landscape designers, thuja western Brabant is deservedly very popular. A fast-growing, frost-resistant and unpretentious coniferous plant in care is increasingly being an adornment of private gardens. Lush dense crown, having pyramidal shape, very decorative. It looks spectacular both in combined compositions and in alleys and hedges.

Using this member of the cypress family to create a stylish cozy garden will limit the space, giving it a decent frame.

One of the five types of thuja is western, it has many varieties, among which thuja western Brabant stands out. An ornamental frost-resistant, fast-growing tree with a compact columnar crown is widely used in landscape gardening.

Main characteristics

AT wild nature thuja western, which is not without reason called " tree of life”, grows in the eastern regions of Canada and in the north of the USA. Introduced to Europe in the middle of the 16th century evergreen began to be used to decorate parks. In Russia, thuja of this species has a wide distribution area. It is cultivated in many areas, including Far East and in Siberia.

Having become acquainted with the description of thuja Brabant, we see that this variety is winter-hardy, withstands frosts up to 30-35 ° C. The plant is great for the harsh Russian climate. Brabant is one of the fastest growing varieties of the western thuja, in a year the growth can be 30-35 cm.

AT Russian climate the height of the thuja Brabant does not exceed 3.5-4 meters. The shape of the crown is columnar, compact. Branches can lean all the way to the ground. The bark on the trunk is reddish-brown, in places it exfoliates. Green needles turn brown winter period. In April-May, the thuja blooms, after flowering small oblong brown cones are formed.

Varieties of thuja Brabant and Smaragd are very often used to form hedges. Their characteristics are largely the same. Among the differences between thuja Brabant and Smaragd can be distinguished.

Variety Brabant:

  • the needles turn brown in winter;
  • the shape of the crown is columnar;
  • annual growth is 35-40 cm;
  • the hedge quickly grows into a dense green wall.

Variety Smaragd:

  • needles in winter do not lose color;
  • pyramidal shape of the crown;
  • annual growth - 10-20 cm;
  • less branching and does not require frequent haircuts.

Both varieties of thuja have varieties with golden needles - Golden Brabant and Golden Smaragd. Thuja Golden Brabant is characterized by a golden yellow color, which persists in winter.

Young trees have a dense cone-shaped crown, in older trees it becomes looser.

How to care for thuja Brabant

Although the thuja western Brabant is unpretentious in care, it still has its own preferences for the type of soil, moisture, sunlight, and temperature. If you neglect the basic rules when growing it, decorative functions may be lost. In particular, the main care is to periodically cut off the shoots to form beautiful shape crowns.

When cutting a thuja, cuttings can be selected to use them for propagation. Placed in a container of water, they will give roots. Rooted seedlings can be planted in the ground.

Location and type of soil

Thuja refers to light-loving plants. She does not tolerate round-the-clock shade, losing the brightness of the color of the needles. At the same time, constant heat is also harmful to her. The best option when choosing a landing site there will be partial shade. On the suburban areas it is advisable to plant trees on the western or eastern side of the buildings.

The most favorable soil for the cultivation of thuja western Brabant is loam, although it can grow on any soil. On light soil, the plant develops better and looks more decorative. It is preferable to plant thuja in spring or autumn, but it is also possible in summer.

Landing

A planting hole is dug 60-80 cm deep, wide for the size of the root system. The pit is filled with water and allowed to absorb moisture. If the soil is heavy, it is required to lay at least 15 cm of the drainage layer. The root collar is placed at ground level and the seedling is covered with a pre-prepared soil mixture. It is desirable that it includes peat, sand and leafy soil in a ratio of 1: 1: 2. To improve growth, nitroammophoska is added to the mixture. After that, water the plant.

Care

After planting, regular watering is required, about once a week. When planting in hot weather, the frequency of watering increases. The plant responds well to irrigation. To do this, you can use a hose with a sprayer. In dry soil, thuja does not develop well, the needles turn yellow and crumble.

The soil should be loosened to a shallow depth, since the plant has a superficial root system. To protect the roots from drying out and overheating, it is advisable to cover the soil with mulch - peat, compost, sawdust, bark.

From winter frosts thuja does not suffer, but in the spring it can get sunburn. Young trees should be especially protected by covering them from the sun with material that transmits sunlight well. In an evergreen plant, the process of photosynthesis occurs even in winter. In places where heavy snowfalls occur, the crowns of trees are tightly pulled together with a rope for the winter.

In the first year, while the roots are not strong enough, top dressing is carried out up to three times per season. A year after planting, every spring, top dressing is done with complex fertilizer. Pruning is best done 2-3 years after planting. It is preferable to do this procedure twice - at the beginning of summer and at the end of August. Small crown adjustments are made throughout the season. As you can see, planting and caring for the Brabant thuja (photo) is not particularly difficult.

Using thuja Brabant in garden design

The advantage of the variety is that it has a very fast growth. This property of Tui Brabant is successfully used in landscape design. Thuja is a universal element for creating a single ball, a neat cone, a pyramid. Non-standard single figures made of wood can land on any surface relief. But if beautiful geometry is planned from thuja Brabant or Smaragd, then the landing site should have a perfectly flat plane.

Haircut thuja western Brabant is best done on cloudy days. This will avoid burning young shoots in the sun, which were hidden under long branches before shearing.

Tui planted in a row will replace the hedge. If you cut such a fence under rectangular shape, it looks completely different. Planning to grow hedge from thuja Brabant, seedlings should be dug in at a distance of about 1 m from each other, because at the base the crown will be quite wide. Over time, the crowns of the trees will close, and such a hedge with a dense green curtain will cover the site from prying eyes and will serve as a wonderful decoration.

Forming a plant begins when it has reached the desired height. Pruning the thuja Brabant is the most time-consuming part in caring for the plant. The haircut is carried out with a sharp pruner, which will not be able to cause dents at the cut point. So that the tree does not weaken, a third of the shoot should be cut.

Thuja Brabant, like all conifers, will delight all year round lush greenery purify the air by enriching it with oxygen. Another advantage is decorativeness. Combining with each other different kinds thuja with other shrubs and flowers, you can give the site a unique, inimitable shape.

Thuja is an evergreen tree or shrub of the Cypress family. This plant is ideal for creating a hedge that pleases with freshness and bright colors. in green even in snowy winters. Currently, thuja is often used in landscape design, due to the lush shape of the needles and the unpretentiousness of the plant.

Common varieties of thuja

There are several types of this plant, but there are several varieties that are most popular in landscape design:

  • Thuya Danica is a spherical shrub. It grows very slowly and reaches 80 cm in height. It should be used to decorate small garden areas or patios.
  • Smaragd is a tree of the Cypress family, with a broadly conical crown shape. The height of the plant reaches 5 m. The tree grows slowly, but is quite wind resistant. It is used by landscape designers for decorating park areas and personal plots.
  • Thuja Brabant, whose hollow qualities will be described below, is fast growing tree with lush needles, the most popular among the population.
  • Thuja Golden Brabant is another variety of thuja, with yellow-green needles and dense branches.

popular evergreen tree

This plant is quite common in our latitudes and is known for the tart aroma of seaside boulevards and parks. Thuja Brabant is a frost-resistant tree, reaching a height of about 4 m. The plant grows quite quickly, and its growth is about 15 cm in diameter and 40 cm in height. The growth rate makes this plant the most preferable for planting hedges in park areas or summer cottages, because thanks to this property, you can create a beautiful evergreen living fence in a fairly short time.

The crown is branched, but at the same time compact and can reach the ground. The color of the needles is light green, sometimes acquiring a golden hue at the ends. A special advantage of this thuja variety is that the color of the needles does not change even in winter.

Advantages of coniferous beauty

Thuja Brabant has received the well-deserved respect of many gardeners and landscape designers, due to the many benefits of this coniferous plant. The main advantage is fast growth. Also, this tree can grow in very wet or dry soil. But the most lush and bright green crown is obtained if you plant the plant in fertile soil and do not forget about watering.

Another advantage of thuja is that it does not have to be planted in the shade or in the light. But this plant still prefers the sunny side, on which its growth and crown splendor increase. The frost resistance of the plant allows you to create a hedge of coniferous trees, even in the northern regions, while such a fence will delight with juicy flowers in winter weather. Long known healing properties this plant. Thuja Brabant releases phytoncides that disinfect the air by killing microbes.

Hedge - decoration of the site

With the help of this decorative tree you can quickly and easily hide an ordinary fence behind a wall of a group of plants, which is especially suitable for impatient gardeners. Thuja western Brabant perfectly tolerates pruning, so you can create flat wall or trim the trees as you wish.

A hedge can surround a lawn or a backyard gazebo. Playground surrounded by decorative coniferous trees, will create a unique comfort and will please the eye. A special advantage of living fences from ornamental plants is that you can make them with my own hands, and a thick and impenetrable wall will reliably hide the yard from prying eyes.

Creating a hedge in the backyard

Beautiful and juicy green color all year round thuja Brabant will delight. A hedge from this plant can be created even by a beginner in gardening. First of all, you should correctly calculate the distance between the trees. To create a dense hedge, it is recommended to plant plants in a row with a distance of at least 80 cm. If the soil is fertile enough, then between the trees you should retreat up to 1 m. When planting an alley, you can allow an interval between trees of 5-8 m. To create a fence in two rows it is necessary to observe the interval between them 50-70 cm.

plant thuja better in autumn. During this time, it will have time to take root before frost, and the rainy season will save you from unnecessary watering, and in spring the tree will begin to grow with renewed vigor. In the first few years, it is better to cover young plants with an awning from the scorching sun, and for the winter cover them with breathable material from frost. After the hedge reaches 1.5 m in height, it will become sun- and frost-resistant.

How to plant thuja

Before planting a plant, the main rule should be taken into account - the roots must be dried, but do not disturb the earthen ball on them. Thuja Brabant, whose landing requires some rules, will be grateful if the auxiliary composition is prepared in advance. To do this, two parts of leaf or sod land are mixed, as well as one part of peat, sand and humus. To improve the effect, you can add 0.5 kg of nitroammophoska for each tree.

The planting hole should be 70 cm deep and 1 m in diameter. Before planting, it is necessary to put drainage and prepared soil in it. Next, the seedling is deepened to the required depth, trying to ensure that the root neck is completely covered with soil, and the roots and trunk do not change their location. If the soil is dense enough, then the amount of the drainage layer should be increased to 20 cm, because stagnant moisture can lead to plant diseases.

Mandatory plant care

The tree must be plentifully and constantly watered in the first months after planting. An adult plant almost does not need watering if there is enough ground water. In spring, it is better to feed the trees with organic matter and minerals at the rate of 100-120 g/m2. In the spring, it is necessary to loosen the soil and remove dry shoots.

It is better to cut the plant in the spring, as well as in mid-August. It is better to choose cloudy days for this in order to avoid burns of shoots hidden under the crown. It is not necessary to prune the plant to the bark, from this it overgrows for a long time.

A cut of 1/3 of the length of the shoots will be optimal. That's all the attention that thuja Brabant needs. Care for plants that are grown at home is more demanding.

First of all, the plant requires shade and a temperature of 10 to 15 °C. In summer, you can put the pot with the seedling outside in a cool and shady place. Regular, but moderate watering, as well as top dressing with minerals, should become mandatory. If the air in the room is dry, then the needles must be sprayed with warm water.

Tree propagation at home

Thuja western Brabant propagates not only from seeds, but also by cuttings. At the same time, the cutting process is more preferable, because this is the only way to save time and the characteristics of the variety. For this, it is necessary to use lignified shoots aged 2-3 years, at least 40 cm long, or a semi-lignified growth cut in June of this year, the length of which reached 20 cm. Cut the cuttings in such a way that a piece of old tree remains at the base.

Next, it is necessary to treat the shoots with a solution of heteroauxin and plant them in a greenhouse with a pre-prepared soil composition, consisting of equal parts peat, river sand and sod land, planting depth should be 1.5–2.5 cm. Plants must be sprayed and ventilated. At the end of autumn, the accustomed cuttings need to be insulated with sawdust or foliage, and in case of frost, wrap with a film.

Diseases of coniferous beauty

Yellowing and dropping of needles can be caused by insufficient watering, burns from direct sunlight, or severe winter frosts. In this case, you should not panic, but if the plant continues to become covered with brown spots, then it is possible that it has become ill with phomopsis or cercospores. Then it is worth pruning the diseased shoots and intensifying the watering of the plant.

Thuja Brabant is a great choice for landscape design. With its help, you can create not only a hedge, but also cut trees to an unusual geometric shape, such as balls, spirals or animal figures. A special advantage of this plant is its ease of care and a fairly affordable price that families can afford even with a modest budget.

I sincerely hope that the modest experience of the townspeople who fled to the Kostroma village will be useful to those who want to either decorate their site, or mask part of the fence or fence, or isolate them from prying eyes patio. Sometimes you see how beautiful the fence itself is turned to the street with the front side, and the owners “admire” its technical side with pleasure. And in this case, thuja brabant will help out, because a hedge is a classic way of disguise. Long planes of the fence visually reduce the area, but by decorating at least part of the fence, you can visually avoid this effect. It is not at all necessary to decorate the entire fence, you can break it into sections and plant the most different plants along its length. It can be shearing, and free-growing, and flowering, and berry bushes. A hedge of arborvitae Brabant can become a windproof barrier with a mesh version of the fence.

Tui Brabant in May 2016

In a windy area, a continuous row of thuja can create turbulent currents, as is often the case.
with any solid fence. To avoid this, the thuja should not be planted too close, their crown should not be allowed to close (we'll talk about the haircut below). Why about Brabant? After all, there are many western thujas most suitable for the middle lane. Thuja Brabant is the most unpretentious, the fastest growing, the fastest recovering after shearing, spring burning (everything can happen!), The most undemanding to the composition of the soil. They can get along with her various plants, and not just hostas, geyhers, astilbes, junipers, violets, tulips, muscari. Along these thujas, I grew bush beans, onions, dill, parsley. In the photo, a row of boards lies on rotted straw, preparing the ground for planting rooted mustaches of Haneoya strawberries at the end of summer. Our site is in the village, on a hill, with a very difficult terrain, which is what I like about it.

I think that the story of how to grow a hedge from thuja Brabant is better to build in chronological order photos, accompanied by small comments, working on the errors along the way. 2007, we visit, we work in the city, but it is already starting to “pull”))). Behind the birch, behind the thickets of bird cherry and elderberry, there was a funnel, like from a bomb explosion in movies. And then the local granny / her house opposite ours across the road / planted potatoes. Everything behind the fence is above our swamp. And it was the swamp vegetation that grew here, only after they began to mow from year to year, dandelions began to settle. sent everything to compost heap I'm embarrassed to admit it now. How much mulch!

Sometimes I also came for 3-4 days with one or the other daughter, my husband ordered to MOW. Once the fence led, my daughter and I tied it to the birch with tape, of course, before my husband and I arrived. On right summer house, or rather, a lighter, taken from the 2nd floor of our house. On the left - of course, a bathhouse, a blunder set by local "left-handers". In front of the house - my first exercises on arranging mixboders ... It was in August of this year that my husband and I made a fence, having previously issued another 5 acres of land behind these boards.

Spring 2009, the funnel had to be filled up, two screening machines disappeared into nowhere. My husband and one of our neighbors are standing at the bedding site. Made concrete strip foundation, the pipes were installed, the husband welded the plates to the pipes for attaching the grid. Could not find a less bright grid, there was no choice. To the left, behind the bathhouse, a gate was made so that you could leave the site. The birch was left as a tapeworm. Designers advise: best color for painting fences: gray-blue, gray-white, tobacco, pea, brown.
Let's look around - the greenery around us is mostly shades of gray and brown. The effect of camouflage fabrics or nets is based on this. They come in yellowish /desert/, bright green and brown-green hues. We painted the pillars in light gray, since the fence along the facade was all light gray from galvanized mesh. And it was deliberately placed, because we didn’t need a deaf person. But the bright green mesh began to annoy me, along with the calf in the distance on the left and the cowshed on the right. Therefore, we decided to plant a strip of Tui Brabant.

We came to the village for the May holidays. Tui bought in Auchan. They are from a local nursery. They chose very lush, multi-stemmed. Now more and more often I see on sale single-barrel specimens overfed with growth stimulants.

Later I several times I made a mistake when purchasing Polish copies, frankly bad ones. Very good and high quality from Germany. The fence in front of the house is visible here, and closer to the thujas there is an old picket fence. We did not remove the span of the fence in front of the thujas for a couple of years, as it protected the plants from the southern sun. Here is the entrance from the side of the street, we decided to cover it with thujas, later we will move the rightmost thuja to the left, since we did not calculate how and where rainwater flows. We had to carry out backfilling more than once, since the house is on a hill, when the snow melts, during heavy rains, the elements do not ask a person where to drain. 7 thujas were planted in large pits with drainage, with humus, with peat, with leafy soil, with nitrophoska, and mulched. None of this could have been done. The only thing we did right was to hold the thuja pots in water for 2-3 hours before planting in the ground.

The remaining 13 thujas were decided to be planted along the far fence.

In general, we didn’t plan to plant anything here yet, in any case, we didn’t voice it to each other, we decided that there would be a lawn. There is good loam here, which was not used for cultivation, therefore, after soaking the root ball, they planted without adding fertilizers, large landing pits didn't dig. We used only compost and leafy soil from a nearby forest. The root neck was left at the level of the soil, without deepening. trunk circle mulched. The distance between the thujas is 1 meter 30 cm. A technical indentation is required from the concrete plinth of the fence, in our case it was 1.3 meters.
It is imperative to retreat, since any fence subsequently needs to be looked after. By the way, chives grow well behind these thujas on the north side, I regularly cut them, dry them, use them when cooking cereals, when stewing, in soups, in fillings. Protected from the sun, it does not bloom for a long time, retains the tenderness of the leaves ... And does not take up space.

When planting, it is necessary to water well, then it is necessary to water often, preventing the top layer of the earth from drying out. If there is a heat, then spend "sprinkling", directly from the watering can. Tui love it very much. late autumn I wanted to cover them with white lutrasil, but, having listened to the advice of the owner of one of the nurseries in Kostroma, I abandoned this idea. The only thing I did was to tie the branches around the trunk with rings, passing the rope between them so that the rings did not move. This helps to protect the still not very thick thuja from the so-called "shaving" the branches with ice.

In the winter, the thuja left without covering material, they overwintered perfectly. The rope has not yet been removed.

The growth of thuja Brabant averages 30 cm. At a young age, for fertilizing thuja, I was advised not to use complex fertilizers for conifers, but simply ammonium nitrate(1 tablespoon per bucket of 10 liters of water). Complex fertilizers are sold for all types of soils, not taking into account the difference in loamy, sandy and other soils. For thuja, sometimes it is enough to give nitrogen spring top dressing, then during the season use organic. Young arborvitae respond well to watering with bioinfusions, infusion of biohumus, orgavit. And be sure to cut young shoots at least a little from a young age. It is enough to cut off the apical shoot, as the thuja will begin to throw out new buds. Otherwise, we get a transparent tree with openwork needles, afraid of thuja aphids and scale insects, as well as the winter-spring sun.

This is thuja yellow coniferous Sunkist, but the pruning principle is the same. It is enough to cut cm 5.

Thanks to pruning and top dressing in autumn, the thuja looked healthy, not all of them were the same in size, some were ahead of others in growth ...

autumn 2012

And then I read the advice of famous designers and agriculturists… I made an unforgivable mistake.

This is me after the "tying", satisfied with the work done)))

I didn’t have enough lutrasil, otherwise I would have covered the thuja Smaragd at the porch. This is what saved them. Winter is all ahead, it's only the end of October. The only thing I did right was that I did not close the tops of their heads. And experts correctly write that thuja grow in winter, I saw it myself. All the tops were fresh green, peeking out over the lutrasil, and under the material the needles were snotty. We left in mid-February for a month and a half in the city. Another grandson was to be born, and the firewood was not calculated. If I hadn't covered it, this wouldn't have happened.

March, the sun is very active, there is still snow, they removed lutrasil. She began to douse with Epin's solution. Useless!

2013

On the left I was drawn to make raspberries, on the right corner - they planted a blood-red hawthorn in the form of a hedge. Throughout 2013, I regretted what I had done with the thujas. But most of all, I was ashamed to admit to my friend that it was not her advice that outweighed. 7 thujas on the facade also turned red, at some point I even wanted to move them to the backyard))
I had to check every branch to see if it was alive. If it is dry and brittle, it must be cut to living tissue, nothing else is given.

The next 2015 passed with good growth and no losses))) In the spring, it is necessary to shake the branches so that all the brown and old needles fall. Vetkopad is a common occurrence in all thujas. It is necessary to clear the ramifications of the branches near the trunk, where needles usually accumulate.

While apple trees, pears and cherries are small, we decided to plant potatoes here.

Everything sheared lies under the thuja, there is no need to clean it anywhere.
In winter, at low temperatures, it is better not to touch the thuja, as its branches become like glass, break off easily. Therefore, it is better to be patient until frost and wind throw off snow and ice from it. You can not tightly tie the trunks to each other in the fall. This applies to young and loose crowns.

Tui tolerate the spring sun with bright snow perfectly. After rotting, they are of different density and height.

I had to remove the birch, the roots were at a distance of more than 10 meters ... But they planted 4 birch trees behind the bath near the forest. According to the laws of landscape design solid wall thuy should visually reduce the area and “crush” the perspective. But behind our fence, a local dodger of 6-meter boards stolen from the roof of a collective farm calf built a fence for grazing his bulls (with the administration silent). What if the thujas close these gray boards? The rules and laws of design do not always fit. We are waiting for the calf house to collapse on its own and become overgrown with nettles.

When there was only a lawn, the fence inevitably attracted attention. Now attention is diverted to different greens.

And they wanted thuja and a lawn)))

And this is October 2016:

An adult thuja Brabant in our conditions can grow up to 6 meters, the trunks increase in diameter, so much so that they cannot be wrapped around with fingers. A wide crown is formed, but at the bottom of the trunk the branches thin out, become weak, all the strength goes into the crown. If you cut while maintaining the shape of the hedge, the buds wake up, new shoots appear, but the thickness of the trunk does not increase too much. You can determine for yourself the width of the hedge, not necessarily the projection of the crown should be in the form of a circle. By the way, an indicator of the level of care in the previous season for thujas of all types is their spring bloom. It blooms, loses its decorative effect - it means that it lacked moisture. And this is despite the fact that all types of thuja tolerate long dry periods. It is with regular watering that they show the best decorative effect.

These plants recovered longer, the crown less often. Flowering - brown buds that I didn't cut in time. From the side of the street and from the side of the yard, I cut the branches on different length, I was wrong about that. dark spots bottom right - astilbe bushes. And in the bottom photo is the same thuja after transplantation a year earlier.

On the right is a thuja transferred to a new place. You can not loosen the ground under the thujas, as sometimes advised. Their roots are superficial, fibrous, easily torn off. Weeds are easily removed by hand or with a flat cutter.

With proper mulching, there will be no weeds. Here we decided to remove the wild rose bushes, also hedges, as well as the remnants of wooden fence who have fulfilled their role. If the crown has become thick, then cutting with scissors is a laborious task. Very good scissors

They cope with their task, they close the street.

Our street is not busy, a rare car will pass. The decorative virtues of the evergreen western thuja become especially noticeable in winter, when the bulk of the plants lose their foliage, demonstrating the outfit of the “naked king”. On the left is virgin bird cherry, near the wall of the house there is a silver sucker, 2 bushes of a red-leaved vesicle, 2 bushes of a variegated derain. But their time has passed ... Now winter is the time of thuja.

The entry is posted in sections:

Giving it additional attractiveness and naturalness, it protects from dust and snow, as well as much more.

It looks like a hedge from Tui

And the thuja hedge remains very popular today. Why do thousands of people around the world prefer thuja, and not some other plant out of dozens of possible ones? In such interesting question it would be helpful to go into more detail.

Thuja is evergreen tree or shrub (depending on the variety) of an attractive round-pyramidal shape. It perfectly tolerates frequent haircuts, remaining thick and maintaining a pleasant color. Therefore, you can give it almost any architectural form.

With proper care, the plant can easily live for many decades, delighting its owners with beautiful appearance. Grows best on sunny side, but if necessary, it can grow quite successfully in the shade. True, in the latter case, many varieties retain their decorative effect. Thuja is not too demanding both on the composition of the soil and on moisture. Most cultivars tolerate low temperatures air.

Many owners of thuja hedges like that the air in the area where a large number of these plants grow is fresh and fragrant. This is not surprising: the plant is able to ionize the air and, importantly, the leaves contain essential oil, thanks to which a faint, subtle, but very pleasant aroma always hovers in the air.

No less important is the fact that a healthy thuja retains a luxurious crown both in summer and in winter - like most other conifers. If many coniferous plants have certain preferences for climate, then thuja can grow well both in the southern and northern regions of our country, easily and quickly adapting to the climate.

Thuja also tolerates transplanting much more easily than most other conifers. That is why thuja hedge length is one of the best and most common options.

However, before you start creating a living fence, it will be useful to learn about some varieties of arborvitae. Of course, in general, varieties are quite numerous. Therefore, in order to make a final choice suitable variety, you should learn at least about the most common and popular varieties.

What is interesting thuja variety Brabant

Among the many varieties of western thuja, thuja Brabant is one of the most sought after. One of its main advantages is its rapid growth and large size.

In a warm climate, this thuja can reach a height of 20 meters, and the diameter of the crown of such a tree is 4 meters!

However, in middle lane thuja rarely reaches a height of 4-6 meters.

However, for most people who decide to get a thuja hedge, this is more than enough. With regular watering, soil sufficiently rich in microelements and the absence of diseases, thuja can add up to 40 centimeters in height in a year. During the same period, its crown can add up to 15 centimeters in diameter.

Tui seedlings ready for planting in the ground

The shape of the crown is very pretty - a pronounced cone. At the same time, even a neglected crown is very compact: thick branches descend to the very soil, but practically do not stick out to the sides. The brown or reddish-brown bark would give a special elegance to the plant, but it is almost invisible due to the extremely dense crown.

The shade of the needles can vary significantly (from dark green to light green). In some cases, golden tips can also be seen. First of all, it depends on the type of soil and its moisture content. Many experts highly appreciate the thuja Brabant for its peculiarity: in winter, it retains its color. For most varieties of thuja, this is extremely uncharacteristic: they turn yellow for the winter. But not Brabant!

Thuja begins to bloom in mid-April (plus or minus a couple of weeks - depending on the climate in the area). Small brown cones with a diameter of about 1 centimeter are ovoid or oblong in shape.

This is what Tui cones look like

In general, this variety is great choice for people who decide to acquire a luxurious hedge. It is suitable for landing in almost the entire territory of our country. The only exceptions are dry areas, as well as areas with extremely low winter temperatures (-30 degrees Celsius and below).

What you should know about thuja Smaragd

Almost as popular as the variety Brabant and thuja Smaragd. This plant is widely used in modern gardening of land. Outwardly, the Smaragd variety is similar to Brabant. The same large bush with a crown of almost regular cone. The popularity of this variety is due to the accuracy of the crown shape and dense, tightly adjacent branches.

At good conditions this thuja variety quite quickly reaches 4-6 meters, after which the growth, which is not too fast, further slows down. The crown diameter at the base usually reaches 1-1.5 meters.

It looks like Tuya Smaragd

The Smaragd variety grows much more slowly than Brabant - in one year, at best, the growth is 10-12 centimeters. Therefore, the thuja reaches a height sufficient for the formation of a hedge (2-2.5 meters) only at the age of 10-12 years.

Like Smaragd, this variety retains rich green color crowns both in the warm season and in the cold.

The crown of most other thuja varieties, as mentioned above, turns yellow or turns brown.

If you decide to arrange a hedge of Smaragd thuja on your site, you should know that it not only grows rather slowly, but is also very picky about the moisture content and composition of the soil. It grows slowly, often gets sick, and sometimes dies if the soil does not contain all the necessary nutrients. Therefore, the soil must be regularly fertilized and constantly moistened. However, excess moisture can also be detrimental to the plant. Therefore, if the level of groundwater is quite high, it is necessary to take care of high-quality drainage.

Installation diagram of the drainage system

When planting, it is best to place the bushes at a distance of 50-60 centimeters from each other. It grows well not only in well-lit areas, but also in the shade. If strong winds are often observed in the planting area, it is worth providing the plant with appropriate protection. Otherwise, the plant may be uprooted, or many branches will simply be broken.

In the first two years after planting a thuja of this variety, it is necessary to carry out shallow loosening of the soil near the trunk once a month. This will allow easy access fresh air to the roots, providing excellent well-being and the fastest engraftment in a new place. From time to time, mulching can be carried out by introducing a small amount of peat, mixing it with the soil.

In the spring, it is necessary to eliminate dry shoots so that they do not spoil appearance plants and at the same time did not interfere with the growth of young branches. When it comes time to cut the thuja, you can give its crown almost any shape. But it is better not to cut the branches too much - one third of the maximum length.

In general, the Smaragd variety was bred for growth in northern countries with a harsh climate. Therefore, it perfectly withstands low temperatures (excluding extreme ones, up to -35 degrees and below). But still, in the first year after planting, the plant can be covered with burlap to prevent freezing. This must be done very carefully if you do not want to break young branches.

Of course, thuja varieties for hedges are much more numerous than those given here. But to tell about all varieties is simply impossible.

How is the planting of thuja

by the most in a simple way to acquire a hedge from a thuja will be an appeal to specialists. Yes, you have to spend. But they will do all the work quickly, efficiently and competently. But still, many people prefer to do this work with their own hands.

So, if you want to plant thuja on your site, you can do it in two ways: seeds and cuttings. The first option takes much longer (2-3 years more!), but it is much simpler and cheaper. But it is worth talking about both options.

So, if you decide to grow thuja from seeds yourself, you will have to:

That's all. Now you need to take care of the plant, removing weeds and watering the ground if necessary.

In a few years (usually 5-7 years), a luxurious row of young bushes will appear in this place.

How to care for thuja?

If you do not want to spend so much time creating a living fence, you can opt for cuttings. They are best cut from a young, strong tree.

You can also buy cuttings in specialized stores.

Planting mature trees is not worth it. They are quite expensive, and their survival rate is very low: thuja does not tolerate transplantation from place to place. Therefore, you risk throwing thousands of rubles down the drain.

In comfortable conditions, the height of the arborvitae reaches 20 m, but in our region they grow no more than 5 m. The lush crown has a conical shape up to 4 m in diameter. Branches cover the entire trunk to the ground.

The needles are directed upwards, the structure resembles scales.

The color of thuja Brabant ranges from rich green to light and even yellowish hues, sometimes with golden tips.

The plant blooms in spring, after which small cones are formed in the shape of a brown egg.

Thuja western Brabant cuttings are best planted in open ground in spring, but it can also be done in early autumn. The main thing is that the plant has a month left for rooting before the frosts come.

Thuja is unpretentious to soils, but feels better in fertile soil. You should prepare the mixture in advance, taking peat, sand and leafy soil in a ratio of 1: 1: 2.

Poorly tolerates the burning sun throughout the day or deep shade. It is worth giving preference to a place slightly shaded, but do not forget that the plant is photophilous.

The diameter of the planting hole must match the root system. As a rule, a meter is enough. In heavy soils, drainage should be used:

  • expanded clay;
  • pebbles;
  • broken brick.

When planting a thuja, the root collar should be in line with the ground. Excessive lifting or deepening will lead to the death of the tree. Before planting the plant, it is necessary to remove the ropes, burlap and other fasteners with which it was connected from it. Remove from the container carefully so as not to damage the root system.

If the area of \u200b\u200bgrowth of the western thuja is subject to strong winds, it should be tied up. To do this, three wooden pegs are driven around the trunk, which are tied together with a rope, nylon or other durable but soft material. The trunk should not be fixed tightly, it must remain flexible under the influence of the wind so that the plant is formed strong and hardy.

Care for thuja Brabant

Tui Brabant does not need special care, the tree adapts perfectly to growing conditions. Particular attention should be paid in the first months after landing in open ground.

An adult plant will not need such a procedure. However, do not forget to tie up the branches so that they do not break under the weight of snow.

With the onset of spring, mineral top dressing of thuja is carried out. You can use complex fertilizers for coniferous plants. It is necessary to inspect and remove damaged, dry or diseased shoots.

For 2-3 years of life of the western thuja, pruning can be carried out. For this purpose, a garden pruner is suitable, powerful, leaving no damage to the cuts. With the right choice of tool, the cut will soon be tightened, and will not interfere with the development of the tree.

  • mold;
  • rotting of the root system;

  • moth moth;
  • scab;
  • leaflet;
  • spider mite;
  • false shield;
  • thuja beetle.

It is necessary to regularly treat thuja Brabant with insecticides, such as Fufanon, Aktara, Decis pro. To prevent the appearance of spider mites, you can spray thuja with water.

The endurance, frost resistance and unpretentiousness of the plant to growing conditions made thuja Brabant a favorite. Due to the pliability in shearing, shrubs and trees of this species are given a wide variety of shapes, which is only enough for the gardener's imagination.
