When can you plant cucumbers? Selection of optimal varieties for high yields

The lunar calendar for sowing and planting cucumbers for 2019 is made in the form of two tables indicating the favorable terms of work for growing cucumbers in a greenhouse, greenhouse and in open ground. The calendar was compiled for growing cucumbers in Central Russia.

The first table contains the sowing and planting dates for growing cucumbers in a greenhouse or greenhouse seedling way. The second table contains the timing of sowing and planting cucumbers through seedlings for open ground and favorable sowing days right in open ground.

The lunar calendar for 2019 indicates the days of work in the fertile signs of the zodiac. Sometimes the agrarian dates for sowing seeds and subsequent planting force sowing or planting during the waning moon. It is desirable to sow cucumbers on the growing moon, and it is permissible to transplant seedlings during the waning moon. In the lunar calendar, we indicate among the dates for sowing seeds the most favorable days that fall on the growing moon and the fertile sign of the zodiac.

Subsequent measures for the care and planting of cucumbers should be carried out focusing on the growth of plants. If cucumbers are sown early according to this lunar calendar terms, then the date of transplantation to a permanent place must also be the earliest among those indicated in the calendar.

Lunar calendar for growing cucumbers in a greenhouse or greenhouse

For growing cucumbers, we advise you to choose the most favorable days for sowing from those indicated in the lunar calendar table, because. these days fall on the growing moon. When sowing seeds on a windowsill, they will germinate in six to eight days.

The most best temperature air for seed germination and growing seedlings for planting in a greenhouse and greenhouse: in sunny days 20-25°С, on cloudy days 18-22°С and at night 16-18°С.

Cucumbers grown in open ground can be sown on seedlings or directly in open ground. If you will sow seeds in open ground, then choose from the days indicated in the second table, such a day that, according to the weather forecast, the last severe frosts fall on the first week from the date of sowing cucumbers. Experience shows that the most frost-resistant seeds sown dry, although they will sprout later. Soaked cucumber seeds, too, but slightly less frost-resistant and will sprout a little later. And germinated seeds will give the earliest shoots, but more often die during freezing. Cucumber seeds germinate about two weeks after the soil temperature reaches 15°C. When sown in warm ground seedlings of cucumbers may appear in six to eight days.

Any cucumber seeds germinate at temperatures above 12°C. Seed hardening promotes earlier seed germination.

Many summer residents sow cucumbers on their first spring visit to the country, sow the seeds in boxes or 8x8 pots and then water the seedlings every 7-10 days. Picking seedlings of cucumbers is not necessary. For early bountiful harvest we advise you to provide seedlings of cucumbers with bright lighting for 6-8 hours and complete darkness for 12-14 hours.

Cucumber seedling one month old, which has 3-4 leaves, planted in a greenhouse, greenhouse or in open ground at the appropriate time, on favorable days according to the lunar calendar.

Cucumber seedlings are planted in the greenhouse when the temperature in the greenhouse is set at 15 ° C, but in order to reach the dates indicated in the first table, cucumbers can be planted at a temperature of 10 ° C, but not lower. Covering material allows you to increase the temperature by 5 ° C. Cucumber seedlings can be planted in a greenhouse at a temperature of 10-12 ° C.

Seedlings are planted in open ground, when average daily temperature will be set above 10 ° C, covering at night and on cold days with covering material (in Central Russia spring frosts may be before June 12). If in your area ground water located high, then sowing and planting cucumbers in the ground is better to move to the most late deadline so that the groundwater warms up and does not interfere with the formation of the ovary in cucumbers.

In addition to favorable days according to the lunar calendar, we recommend planting cucumber seedlings on a cloudy day or in the late afternoon.

The best air temperature for cucumber growth before fruiting is 20-25°C on sunny days, 18-22°C on cloudy days and 16-18°C at night.

Three to four weeks after planting the seedlings, cucumbers will begin to bloom. Cucumbers form an ovary and fruits grow at temperatures above 15 ° C, so you should not rush with early sowing in open ground. During the fruiting period of cucumbers optimum temperature on sunny days 25-27°С (not higher than 30°С), on cloudy days 22-24°С and at night 20-21°С. Cucumbers can be harvested one month after transplanting seedlings to permanent place. Cucumbers are harvested daily or every other day.

"Fast" varieties

In the past decade, for the early harvest, mainly parthenocarpic (able to form fruits without pollination) hybrid cucumbers Aprelsky, Zozulya, Maisky and Flagman were mainly grown. Today they have been replaced by a new generation of hybrids with small or medium greens, similar to traditional bee-pollinated cucumbers. They go not only in salads, but are also suitable for pickling or cooking. salted cucumbers. Of the early ones, entering fruiting on the 38-45th day and capable of yielding a crop with a day length of 8-9 hours, parthenocarpic hybrids have proven themselves well: Amur, Artist, Buyan, Lakomka, cold-resistant Bourgeois, ultra-early Balalaika and Bugorok (high-yielding), as well as Cheetah (bouquet type). Of course, in the presence of manual pollination in greenhouses, early bee-pollinated cucumbers suitable for salad, canning and even pickling can be grown. Gardeners already know the hybrids of Vimes, Carambol, Athlete.

Seedling is required

To bring the harvest closer, it is imperative to grow cucumbers through seedlings. It is prepared 2-3 weeks before planting in a greenhouse, that is, in middle lane sowing should be around April 15th. Cucumbers do not tolerate transplanting well, so it is better to use individual cups with a volume of 0.4 liters. The soil can be anything, but if it does not contain nutrients, seedlings will have to be fed once a week. Seeds are often recommended to be warmed up on a battery or near a stove, kept in stimulant solutions, but these gestures are needed only for old material. Seeds of hybrids, if they are not covered with a special shell, it is enough to hold them in hydrogen peroxide from a pharmacy, and shed the soil with biological products (Alirin-B, Gamair, Extrasol, Fitosporin), which protect the sprouts from diseases. Water cucumber seedlings once a week until the soil is completely moistened.

Cucumbers do not respond well to low light and cold (temperatures below 14 ˚C are critical for them). Therefore, I advise you to keep pots with seedlings on a light windowsill (preferably southeast), but not closer than 20-30 cm from the glass, or in window opening on the hanging bookcase so that the pots do not come into contact with the windowsill. In cloudy weather, use the backlight. It will improve the illumination of plants and the placement of mirrors and foil around them. Under such conditions, seedlings can be kept in a pot until the 4th leaf has grown.

You will need

To make cucumbers feel good in the greenhouse in May, prepare the following before transplanting:

  • Means for heating the greenhouse: straw manure, or thermal pots, or appropriate electrical appliances.
  • Water bottles with a capacity of 2 liters - according to the number of cucumber plants (for irrigation).
  • Arcs or other structures for installation inside the greenhouse.
  • Thick nonwoven fabric for covering cucumbers in two layers.

Among some summer residents, there is still a tradition of planting crops along folk calendar. Is it possible to plant cucumbers after Trinity? This question interests many gardeners who are going to grow cucumbers in 2019.

When to plant cucumbers according to the folk calendar

Cucumber sowing begins in May. Some people prefer to plant seedlings in beds immediately after the warm weather sets in. And many choose the landing date based on the folk calendar.

When can you plant seedlings of cucumbers according to the folk calendar in open ground:

  • May 19

Job is considered the very first auspicious day for planting cucumbers. According to beliefs, it was believed that if the night was warm on Job, then there would be a rich harvest of cucumbers all summer. On this day, germinated seeds could be sown directly into the beds. But at night they must be covered with a warm cloth. Planted seeds should be watered with water from the pond.

  • May 27

Another "cucumber" day when you can plant cucumbers is Isidor (Sidor). It was believed that if May 27 is clear all day, then a good harvest of cucumbers can be expected. And if the morning turned out to be cold and cloudy, and by noon the sun came out, then at first the harvest will be poor, and then the cucumbers will begin to grow by leaps and bounds.

  • May 28

Pakhomov's day is considered one of the most favorable days for planting cucumbers in the ground with seeds. This day is also called "Martha the Cucumber". Flax and cucumbers were always sown on Pahom. It was also considered the last day of wheat sowing. But still, it is worth focusing on the climatic conditions in 2019, so as not to spoil the seedlings and the future harvest.

  • June 1st

On June 1, according to the folk calendar, the day of Falaley-borage is celebrated. If you sow seedlings later than this period, then you may not have time, and the formation of fruits will have to be in August, when cooling starts already. Many note that if there were heavy rains in the first two days of June, then the rest of the month will be dry. On the day when Falaley the borage came, attention should be paid to fir cones. If there are a lot of them, then there will be a lot of cucumbers.

  • June 5

After the 5th, the planting season for cucumber seedlings is considered closed. But if the planting of cucumbers in the ground fell on Leonty, they will be the most delicious. During canning, they retain all their taste and aroma. On this day, you need to watch the gadflies. If there are a lot of them flying, then there will be enough greens in the garden.

Also, according to popular signs, it is believed that in order to prevent the evil eye, seedlings should be planted secretly from everyone. Otherwise, there will be a lot of empty flowers on the bushes, and the ovaries will begin to dry out.

  • August 17

Folk signs say that the time for planting cucumbers ends on Evdokia. The nights are getting colder and it's harvest time. From this day on, you can prepare for the new summer season.

Now we can say that planting seeds according to the folk calendar is just superstition. Of course, it is better to focus on weather forecasts and plant seedlings when warm weather is expected, and the seedlings are not in danger of frost.

Do not count down how many days are left until the next holiday. Cucumbers should be planted on the first warm day of May or June.

Is it possible to plant cucumbers on the Trinity

Among believers, there is an opinion that it is no longer possible to plant cucumbers on Trinity and after it. If you plant them in the ground with seeds, then the harvest will be poor, and the planted plants on this day will wither or grow frail and sick.

For non-religious people, this question seems absurd, because if you count how many days must pass before planting seedlings, not paying attention to the weather, you can only ruin the harvest. Many people cannot adjust to religious holidays due to work and plant seedlings when they have free time.

In addition, there are crops that need to be planted in open ground in June or July in 2019.

But sometimes Easter falls at the beginning of April, and Trinity at the end of May. In most regions, this period is still too cold for planting cucumbers. You can’t even talk about the northern cities, at this time you don’t even have to think about growing vegetables.

Where did the belief come from that you can’t plant cucumbers on the Trinity? It is related to the Feast of Spirits Day, which is celebrated just after Trinity. In the past, people believed that it was on this day that the land-breadwinner appeared, and therefore it was considered a great sin to plant, dig or loosen the soil on this day. Those days are long gone, but until now the opinion that it is impossible to plant crops after the Trinity lives among the population.

According to another version, it is impossible to plant cucumbers and other crops during the day after the Trinity because of the pagan spirit of the Basilisk. His day according to the national calendar just falls on June 4th. This demon was also called the king of snakes. On this day, it was not customary to do any work, because the Basilisk would ruin all the work anyway.

What date to plant cucumbers? Dates depend on weather conditions. Sometimes you have to plant seedlings even in July. Sow vegetables when it is convenient, relying only on the weather. Grow good harvest it is possible even if you plant seedlings after Trinity in 2019.

How to plant cucumbers

Everything is clear with the timing of planting seedlings, now you need to figure out how to do it right. How does an experienced summer resident sow cucumbers?

Planting cucumbers is a crucial moment on which the future of the entire crop depends. You can prepare for it in the fall, after the last harvest has been harvested. First of all, you need to dig up the soil. This is to protect against insects that prefer to winter in the soil, and in the spring they lay larvae in seedlings.

Then you can add manure or compost to the dug up earth. Next year, the soil will be saturated with useful trace elements that are needed for active growth and formation of bonds.

spring Special attention should be paid for seed preparation. Before planting, they can be disinfected and germinated. This will significantly increase the percentage of germination of planting material.

Sow as follows:

  • after the seeds have been germinated, they can be planted on seedlings;
  • for planting, you can buy ready-made soil mixture or cook it yourself. To do this, you need earth, peat and compost. Mix everything and pour into containers for planting;

  • plant seeds. After a few days, sprouts should appear;
  • after the first pair of full-fledged leaves, seedlings are planted in a permanent place;
  • after planting, the seedlings are watered with warm water, and covered at night. This will protect them from frost, which occurs at the end of May.

After planting, cucumbers should be watered regularly (the water for irrigation should not be cold), fertilize, monitor the health of the bushes and loosen the soil. At proper care you can get a good harvest, even if you plant seedlings after the Trinity.

It is unlikely that there will be one among gardeners who has never planted cucumbers. This crop, along with potatoes and tomatoes, firmly occupies a position among the base ones in the garden. The whole secret is that these green vegetables are unpretentious in planting and care. However, there are many subtleties that should be considered if you decide to plant cucumbers in your garden.

There is a common formula for planning absolutely any business up to landing garden plants: What? Where? When? If you know the answer to the first two questions, then the third should be given special attention, because it depends on the timing most of success. This article is devoted to all the nuances regarding the time of planting cucumbers.

How to determine the time of sowing?

Everyone who has ever grown cucumbers knows that the whole process takes place in two stages: planting seeds in pots with their further development at home for 2-3 weeks, and then transferring the seedlings to a greenhouse or open ground and leaving for a vegetable until mature plant won't bloom. However, some prefer to plant seeds directly into the soil, bypassing the stage of seedling preparation. It's a matter of taste.

The basic rule is that you can plant a cucumber plant in the ground when it warms up to at least +15 degrees, and the air is up to +20 (even in the morning and late in the evening) - this optimal conditions for planting this crop. The fact is that even slight frosts can harm the plant, which will adversely affect the quality of the crop, or, in general, destroy it. Excessive heat will not have such a detrimental effect on the fate of the plant, but it can delay the period of its adaptation in the soil.

That is why it is so important to accurately define optimal time for planting cucumbers, if you want to please yourself and your loved ones with an excellent harvest. In the very general view seedlings should be planted in the soil in April - June.

When determining the timing of disembarkation, it is very important to take into account many important points- plant variety, climatic conditions in which it will grow, planting method (seedlings or seeds). Some gardeners prefer to focus on the lunar calendar and trust folk signs. One of them reports that if dandelions bloomed profusely, then it's time to pick up seedlings, garden tools and go plant cucumbers. As for planting in open ground, then the best time- the flowering period of mountain ash and lilac.

If you decide to plant cucumbers with plants, then, after a thorough analysis, determine the approximate date of planting. 21, maximum 30 days (optimally 3 weeks) before that, you need to plant the seeds of the future vegetable in peat pots, put them in a sunny place and do not forget about careful care and watering.

The plant should not be too long in small containers, because this will deprive him of life force and may adversely affect yields.

Depending on the variety

It's no secret that cucumbers are different types, which are classified according to maturity. So, there are ultra-early, early, mid-season and late varieties. It is not difficult to guess that they received such names from the time of their fruiting. For cold regions, it is recommended to use the first two, they adapt best and take root in harsh weather conditions.

Ultra early and early varieties planted first. This is due to the fact that these varieties are more resistant to cold. This advantage of these varieties gives them a plus when planting in the northern regions of the country.

These varieties of cucumbers can be planted at the end of February, based on the weather conditions of the region. More successful regions for planting such varieties at this time of the year can be considered:

  • Stavropol region;
  • Krasnodar region;
  • Rostov region and so on.

The beginning of April is a good time for planting cucumbers of medium and late varieties. However, this is also due to the region and the weather conditions in it.

Among the huge variety of varieties of cucumbers, there are rather simple and unpretentious samples that can tolerate various adverse weather conditions. These varieties include:

  • F1 Adam;
  • "F1 Cappuccino";
  • "F1 True friends";
  • "F1 Christina";
  • F1 Darling.

Such a variety of cucumbers as the bush "Kid" can boast of its convenience. This variety grows in small shrubs that do not need to be tied up due to the lack of large thickets and long branches.

Varieties "F1 Perseus", "F1 Nord" are perfect for lovers of canned cucumbers. And varieties under the F1 brand, such as Dasha, Rodnichok, Salting, Zanachka, are great for salting.

For reference: the letter "F" in the name of varieties always denotes seeds of hybrids.

Here are some more interesting hybrid varieties.

"F1 Berendey"

Again, the variety is well suited for film greenhouses. Fruits well, for one square meter accounts for approximately 12-14 kilograms of cucumbers.

Region

This is the main factor to consider when determining the timing of planting cucumbers. Since Russia is the largest and longest country in the world, it is not surprising that a different climate prevails on its territory. Unfortunately, cucumbers are not adapted to such features of our country, so gardeners will have to adapt.

In central Russia, it is preferable to plant seedlings in the ground in the second decade of June. At this time, the soil and air warm up to the right temperature, and the chance to grow a good crop reaches its maximum. Harvest the plant should begin in the period from late April to early May. The greenhouse will gladly accept cucumbers at the end of the last month of spring.

Gardeners living in this area, especially closer to the Moscow region, and who prefer to plant seeds right away, The following dates have been put into service:

  • around May 15 - for landing in the greenhouse;
  • starting from the 25th - for film shelters;
  • June 5 - deadline for placement in open ground;
  • planting seedlings in the ground should begin in the second trimester of June.

AT Leningrad region due to weather conditions, it is worth paying attention to slightly different dates:

  • the first week of May is ideal for preparing seedlings;
  • the last days of this month are good for transferring the plant to the greenhouse.

Remember that often the beginning of June is marked by a decrease in temperature. This means that it is worth stocking up on material for sheltering cucumbers.

In the Urals, you can start growing seedlings closer to mid-April, but if you plan to plant plants in a greenhouse, then you can do this at the beginning of the month. Best Choice cucumbers will be varieties related to early ripening.

In Siberia, it is difficult to accurately determine the date of planting. Due to the fact that this is a very large region, climatic conditions can vary. Therefore, the approximate dates for sowing seedlings are the entire second half of April and the beginning of May. Best way cultivation - greenhouse, because it allows you not to really depend on the temperature of the air and soil.

Southerners - those who live in the Crimea, the Caucasus, Stavropol, Krasnodar region, as well as in the Rostov and Volgograd regions, should take care of the seedlings before the rest. The best time is from the end of February to the beginning of March.

In Ukraine, the time of planting cucumbers is distributed in a special way.

If you plan to plant ultra-early and early varieties, then you should not wait for the end of warm May, as in the northern regions. Planting these varieties of cucumbers is quite simple, and you can start it as early as the end of April. In general, the same rules apply here as for the southern regions of Russia, so no difficulties will arise.

auspicious days

It is useful to know that cucumbers should be planted with the growing moon. It is not recommended to plant cucumbers on full moon days, as they are not planting. However, these days are best for harvesting, because that's when the cucumber juice begins to fill the fruit.

Auspicious days for planting cucumbers in 2018:

  • in January - 9-12, 19-22, 24-26;
  • in February - 6-8, 18, 20-23, 25-27;
  • in March - 5-8, 15, 20-22, 24-26;
  • in April - 2-4, 11-14, 18, 20-22;
  • in May - 1, 9-11, 18-20;
  • in June - 5-8, 10-12, 15-16.

Do not forget that many gardeners also recommend planting cucumbers depending on weather conditions. Usually based on data on the spring weather in the region, as mentioned above. It is worth considering the fact that cucumber seedlings can be planted a couple of weeks earlier in the greenhouse fauna.

According to the lunar calendar

Many gardeners prefer to coordinate the timing of planting cucumbers, and not only that, with the lunar calendar. It is believed that in certain phases of the moon, different vegetable crops grow much better than in others. The calendar is compiled every year, because the satellite of our planet always moves with it and changes its phases.

Consider how good this method of determining the timing of planting. The fact that it takes into account many of the nuances of the growing process. So, according to the lunar calendar, it is necessary to plant cucumbers in the form of seedlings during the growth of the moon and vice versa, during a lunar eclipse, one should refrain from planting this vegetable crop. The calendar allocates three months for planting cucumbers and indicates suitable days and those on which you should not garden.

In April, cucumbers should be planted on the 17th-18th, 21st-22nd and 27th-28th. On the contrary, with 4-6 and 14-16 this idea should be abandoned.

May allows you to grow green vegetables on 18-19, 24-16 days of the month. And 2-3, 7-8 and 15 makes no sense to do this.

The first month of summer suggests that its middle, namely: 14-15 and 21-22 days, promise a high chance of success in growing cucumbers. On the contrary, 3-4, 8-9 and 12-13 numbers are unfavorable.

Depending on the place of planting seedlings in the ground, this year's lunar calendar offers different dates in which to sow the seeds. More about this.

If cucumber seedlings were to grow in a heated greenhouse, then ideally they should have been planted on February 16-18, 21-22 or 25-26, and planted on March 20-21, 24-26. This year it is already too late to use a heated greenhouse, so consider the approximate optimal timing so as not to be late for next year.

Film shelters or greenhouses that are not heated are suitable for planting seedlings on April 17-18, 21-22 and 27-18, so the seeds should have been sown on March 20-21, 24-26. Again, remember this - it will come in handy in the next summer season.

If the choice fell on open ground, then learn the climatic conditions of your region of residence. So, for the southern, the optimal dates for sowing are April 17-18, as well as April 21-22. You can plant in the ground already on May 18-19.

The soil of the middle and northern regions heats up more slowly, and therefore the timing is shifted upwards. In the Moscow region, it is recommended to plant seeds on April 27-28, and seedlings from May 24 to 28. If you live in the Leningrad region and do not plan to use a shelter for the soil, then you should wait for a significant warming. Until May, it is better not to plant seedlings, but you can sow on April 17-29 and on April 1, 4-6 and on Victory Day. This is what the moon has done this year. Sprouted seeds will need to be planted from May 24 to 28 or June 1, 2, 6, 7.

If you are gardeners from more northern regions, then you need to wait until May 18 or 19 in order to plant the seeds and June 23-24 to plant them in the ground.

An important point - if for some reason you cannot do a garden, then do it on any days except May 15, 29 and June 13, 28. These dates coincide with such phases as the full moon and new moon. This applies not only to cucumbers, but also to all other plants. Tip - do not delay planting seedlings in the soil, because too big plant will experience difficulties with adaptation, and with it - and you.

The lunar calendar has not forgotten about those gardeners who do not plant seeds. For them, there is a certain rule - to wait for the air to warm up to +15 degrees, and the soil to +12 or +13 at a depth of 8 to 10 cm (it is at this level that seeds should be planted). Folk signs say that when oak leaves begin to bloom, dandelions bloom, bird cherry blossoms, and an apple tree loses petals - it's time to plant cucumbers.

In Moscow and the Moscow region, this occurs at the end of May or the beginning of June. As for other regions, it is worth focusing on the lunar calendar, taking into account the weather in a particular period. General dates recommended for planting seeds in open ground:

  • May - 24, 25, 26, 27, 28;
  • June - 1, 2, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14, 15, 21, 22.

Folk omens

Do not forget that in most cases, signs are ordinary superstitions. Therefore, it is worth trying to plant cucumbers, relying not only on them. But you can listen to them.

Yes, one of the easiest folk signs, is planting cucumbers in the ground when the first dandelions begin to bloom. But you can rely not only on this sign. The beginning of the flowering of mountain ash and lilac can also be considered a signal for planting cucumbers.

In addition, there are signs and dates.

So, May 19 is the day of Job. It is believed that if on this very day there was a warm night, then all summer there will be a rich harvest.

Another "cucumber" holiday comes on May 27 - the day of Isidore. Clear weather on this day marks a good cucumber harvest. However, there is one nuance. If the morning was cold, and only then the sun came out, then the first time the harvest will be poor, but then there will be a lot of cucumbers.

May 28 is Pahom Day. This day was also called Marfa the Cucumber. It's getting warm these days, for spring frosts there will be no cold snaps. It has always been believed that if the sky is blue on this day, and there are white cumulus clouds on it, then there will be a good harvest of cucumbers. And such a crop will bear fruit until mid-September.

June 2 is the day of Falaley-borage. You should not sow seedlings later than this day, because the formation of fruits will be only in August, during a cold snap, so you should do it on time. In addition, it is believed that if heavy rains fall on the first two days of the month, the rest of the month promises to be dry. On this day, it is worth looking at fir cones, if there are a lot of them, there will be a lot of cucumbers.

Cucumber is an unpretentious culture, but you need to know some growing secrets. The choice of planting time is one of the moments on which the further development and fruiting of cucumber lashes largely depends. We will study in detail the issue when cucumbers are planted in open ground with seeds, we will understand the varieties and choose the best of them for sowing in the beds.

Unlike greenhouses, where only hybrid self-pollinating varieties are sown, both hybrids and bee-pollinated cucumbers can be planted on beds of unprotected soil. AT recent times vegetable growers in the open field prefer to grow hybrids, as they mostly ripen faster and better tolerate excess and lack of moisture. The disadvantages of hybrids include their high price and the impossibility of independent harvesting of seeds.

What cucumbers are best planted in open ground:

  • Krepysh - an ultra-early variety (term before fruiting 38 - 40 days), fruit length up to 10 cm, resistant to adverse climatic phenomena;
  • Pinocchio - medium early variety (term before fruiting 48 - 50 days), fruit up to 8 cm with an average weight of 85 g;
  • Pickle is a late variety (fruiting begins by the 55th day of vegetation), the fruit is up to 11 cm long and weighs 100 g, the hybrid is resistant to bitterness, has a delicate taste.

Also from early cucumbers in the open field, the Aprelsky, Valdai, German varieties have proven themselves well. most popular mid-season varieties are Nezhinsky, Table, Competitor, from late-ripening ones - Winner, Sunny, Rodnichok, Dasha, Zanachka.

On a note! When choosing an outdoor variety, ask which cucumbers grow best in your area. Planting a zoned variety will increase the chances of a bountiful harvest.

Terms of sowing cucumbers in open ground

Too much early sowing leads to a decrease in the germination of the culture and the formation of barren flowers that do not yield a crop. Late planting will also negatively affect cucumbers, as most of the growing season will be in the dry season. With a lack of moisture in the air and soil, cucumber lashes develop with deviations and age faster, less ovaries are formed, and the fruiting period is significantly reduced.

early boarding

To correctly determine the timing of planting, it is necessary to focus on the weather and warming of the soil. The conditions are considered optimal when the soil warms up to +14 - +16°C, the air temperature stabilizes to +18 - +21°C during the daytime, and the thermometer does not fall below +15°C at night. Return frosts must already pass, otherwise the cucumbers will not tolerate a sharp cold snap in the open field.

Such warm weather in the regions of middle latitudes is usually established in the period from the last ten days of April and during the month of May. In the southern regions, the time for sowing seeds comes earlier by about 2 - 2.5 weeks, cucumbers are planted here starting from the last days of March. In the northern regions, the planting of cucumbers in the beds begins no earlier than the second decade of May, and under adverse weather conditions, they are attributed to the first half of June.

On a note! For planting, choose the time in the spring, when the soil has already warmed up, but still retained enough moisture. Under such conditions, seeds will germinate quickly, and germination rates will be higher than with late sowing of seeds.

Medium and late sowing

Many gardeners sow cucumber seeds in several stages in order to receive products throughout the summer. Planting in early spring allows you to get early vegetables to the table for fresh consumption and salads. The fruits obtained as a result of the average and late sowing are used for salting. The terms of the average sowing fall approximately at the beginning of June, late - in July.

In the southern regions, where heat is established early, as early as early March, and the first frosts do not occur until early December, all three types of planting are successfully practiced in open ground. In mid-latitudes, cucumbers planted in July may not have time to ripen, so they are used for late planting. early maturing varieties or plant cucumbers in a greenhouse. In the northern regions, where early planting occurs at best at the end of May, late boarding cucumbers are not practiced.

According to the lunar calendar, the following numbers are considered favorable for sowing seeds and transplanting seedlings of cucumbers into the ground:

in April: 24 - 26 and 29;
in May: 6, 9 - 11, 18 - 19, 24 - 28;
in June: 3 - 5, 10 - 11, 15, 23 - 24.

Avoid planting cucumbers on days of new moon, full moon, total or partial lunar eclipses.

Site and soil requirements

Cucumber care begins with a choice right place on site and soil preparation. Cucumbers are not planted after the crops of the pumpkin family, to which they themselves belong, these are zucchini and pumpkins. These plants have common diseases and pests, so the risk of infection of plantings already at initial stage vegetation.

Cucumber lashes develop poorly after squash and gourds- melons and watermelons. Cucumbers are planted with care after herbs, as they take out of the soil a large number of nutrients.

Any root crops - carrots, beets, potatoes - will be good predecessors. Only after them the soil needs to be disinfected with a solution blue vitriol. Cucumber grows well after cabbage, onions, tomatoes and any vegetable crops, under which organic matter was laid last season.

For lack of space in small areas, cucumber is often planted with strawberries, garlic and corn. And sometimes beds with corn or Jerusalem artichoke are specially alternated with cucumber plantings to protect the latter from drafts.

Fertilizers on the site where it is planned to grow cucumbers are applied to autumn digging. You can do otherwise: sow green manure before winter, for example, white mustard or cereals, and in early spring close up mineral-organic nutritional compositions.

In any case, 50 kg of humus will be needed per 10 m2 (fresh manure can be applied in autumn) or compost from plant residues, as well as 200 g of potassium salt, ammonium nitrate, double superphosphate.

Ammonium nitrate is applied only in spring digging, since the nitrogenous compounds contained in this fertilizer are unstable, and it makes no sense to introduce them from autumn.

Seed preparation

Before starting preparations directly for sowing, cucumber seeds are calibrated and stratified. Calibration (selection of seeds suitable for sowing) is carried out manually at first. All broken and empty grains are discarded, after which the seeds undergo stratification (heating) near heat sources at a temperature of +28 - + 32 ° C for 2 - 4 weeks.

Next, the seeds are sent for viability testing in saline solution: food salt 30 g / 1 liter of liquid, in which the seed is kept for no more than 10 minutes. Cucumber grains that have sunk to the bottom are suitable for sowing, they are further worked with, the floating seeds are removed.

At the next stage, the seeds are disinfected in potassium permanganate (pale solution), brilliant green solution (pharmaceutical composition is diluted 1: 1 with distilled water) or garlic infusion (2 squeezed cloves / 150 ml of water). In potassium permanganate, the material for sowing is kept for 20 minutes, in garlic infusion and a solution of brilliant green for about 2 to 4 hours. After the seeds are washed with warm running water.

Before planting, the seeds are soaked overnight in nutrient formulations with fertilizers or growth stimulants. During this time, the seeds will be saturated with useful trace elements and swell. From fertilizers, you can use nitrophoska (5 g / 1 l) or boric acid(1 g / 1 l), from growth stimulants - the drug Zircon, Epin extra, Potassium and sodium humate according to the instructions.

It is not necessary to carry out germination before planting on open ground beds, the main thing is to plant seeds according to all the rules.

Schemes for planting seeds and seedlings in open ground

The technology for planting seeds and cucumber seedlings in the open field is somewhat different, although the timing is generally the same. In both cases, beds are prepared for planting, between which a distance of at least 1 m is left for cucumbers pollinated by bees, and 70 cm for hybrid varieties.

Seedlings and seeds in the beds are planted in one or two rows, depending on the width of the beds, but the two-line method is usually used, since in this case it is more convenient to tie the cucumbers. The minimum allowable distance between the lines on the bed is 30 cm, the distance of 50 cm is considered optimal.

Sowing seeds

For sowing seeds, two parallel furrows are made with a depth of 2.0 - 2.5 cm, into which grains are laid out at a distance of 4 cm. Not one seed is laid, but 2 - 5 pieces, in order to subsequently leave the strongest sprout. Thinning of plantings is carried out after the formation of the first true leaf. Instead of furrows, holes of similar depth can be made. Such sowing is called point.

Seeds are covered with fertile soil with a layer of at least 1 cm and not more than 1.5 cm. To maintain soil moisture and warmth when planting in early spring, the crops are covered with a film, which is removed as soon as shoots appear. With the advent of sprouts, care begins, consisting of regular watering, loosening and fertilizing.

Seedling transplant

Seedlings can be immediately planted at a distance at which the plants will have enough nutrition and sunlight. Many vegetable growers pre-drive supports or trellises in order to then injure the vulnerable less root system seedlings and cucumber lashes. The distance between seedlings is about 10 cm, denser plantings are considered thickened.

Holes are prepared for seedlings with a depth of 20 - 25 cm, into which, if necessary, add organic fertilizers and then poured profusely. The landing is underway vertical way with a soil clod to the level of cotyledon leaves. Holes fall asleep, like seeds, fertile soil, water again and wait for the complete rooting of the seedlings, after which they begin the standard care of watering, loosening, weed control and top dressing.

Planting cucumbers with seeds is the easiest way to cultivate a crop. Cucumbers sprout quickly and give a good harvest if you follow all the recommendations for fertilizing the soil and consistently carry out all the stages seedbed preparation seeds.
