Automatic drip irrigation of indoor flowers: systems, blooms, flasks, smart pots. Attaching the drip tape to the main pipe

Man cannot live without rest, and plants cannot live without water. Sometimes these needs come into conflict, because few people would think of taking indoor flowers with them on vacation or giving up a long-awaited trip in order to take care of house plants. As a rule, we trust close relatives and friends to water flowers during the holidays. However, this solution is not always feasible. Firstly, once again I don’t want to burden others with my worries. And, secondly, relatives and friends may simply not know how often and with what intensity to water your violet, geranium, crocus, etc. To save yourself from unnecessary worries, "Dream House" offers to familiarize yourself in advance with the most reliable and effective ways organizations automatic watering indoor flowers during your absence.

Devices for automatic watering of indoor flowers

In specialized flower shops you can find several useful devices, which are able to provide automatic watering of flowers during the holidays. Let's take a closer look at their features and effectiveness:

  • Aquaglob. This device is made in the form of a round flask with a very narrow spout. The essence of the device is quite simple: the aquaglob is filled with water, turned over and immersed in the soil with a narrow part. Since the opening of the flask is extremely thin, the water does not pour out of it immediately, but seeps out gradually. Depending on the size, aquaglob can provide automatic watering of flowers for a period of one to two weeks.

  • Blumat(Blumat), which means "carrot", refers to an automatic drip irrigation system. The design of this device includes a cone-shaped base and a plastic tube. The base is immersed in the soil, and the tube is immersed in a tank of water. Since the system is equipped with special sensors, water enters the soil in a dosed manner. When the earth dries out, the device fills it with water, but if there is enough moisture, the valve on the sensor closes, and moisture is not transmitted. Thus, the device "waters" the flowers as long as there is water in the reservoir.

  • Planters with automatic watering. Cache-pots and pots with automatic watering are equipped special system storage and transfer of water, which is at the bottom of the products. When you water the flowers, the rest of the moisture remains in the device, and then evenly distributed over the soil as it dries. Some of these and pots are also equipped with an indicator that allows you to set the mode and intensity of watering for several weeks in advance.

Devices for automatic watering flowers from improvised means

Everything modern systems automatic irrigation are created in the likeness of the well-known improvised designs. Therefore, it is possible to organize watering flowers during the holidays from improvised means.

  • Automatic watering from a dropper. With watering flowers during your absence or vacation, a simple medical dropper can handle. To create an automatic sprinkler, you need to attach the dropper tube to the water tank and adjust the intensity of the dripping with a clamp. After that, put the dropper needle on the ground near the roots of the plant, but do not deepen it into the soil, otherwise it will quickly clog.

How to water flowers when you leave home

  • Automatic watering from a plastic bottle. An ordinary plastic bottle will also help to save flowers during the holidays. To make a flower drinker out of it with your own hands, you need to draw water into the jar, put a thin mesh on the neck, screw on the lid and use a needle to punch several small holes in the lid. After that, the drinker bank is turned upside down and deepened into the soil. Water will gradually seep through the holes and the plants will not be left without moisture. But, since the intensity of the “bottle” watering cannot be adjusted, it is likely that the drinker will flood the plant. To avoid this annoyance, use automatic bottle watering only for large-scale pots and moisture-loving plants.

  • Automatic watering from capillary mats. Unlike previous methods, automatic watering with the help of capillary mats provides the soil with extremely slow, but regular moisture. This method automatic watering is very simple: you need to put a wide piece of cloth under the pot and lower its free edge into a container of water. Because the fabric tolerates moisture well, the soil will be hydrated through the pot's drainage holes. As a capillary mat, it is best to use a terry towel that gets wet quickly or a ready-made capillary mat.

  • Wick watering. It involves the transfer of water to plants through a wick - any rope or cord that does not rot from moisture. One end of the wick is placed in a container of water, and the other is deepened into the soil. To ensure faster and better humidification, it is recommended to install a water tank above the level of the pot.

If shortly before leaving you decide to transplant the flowers, then pull the wick through the drainage hole of the pot and place it on a tray of water. Thus, the root system of the plant will receive moisture without your participation.

We have already figured out a little about how to water flowers when you go on vacation. Now let's look at a few important nuances, which will help to preserve the flowers during your departure:

  • firstly, so that the plants waste moisture more slowly, move them to a cool and dark place;
  • secondly, install the pots close to each other so that the most capricious specimens are in the middle;
  • and thirdly, whichever automatic watering system you choose, on the day of departure, water the plants abundantly and spray their leaves.

In addition, to reduce the amount of evaporation, place drainage, moss or hydrogel around the flower pots. If a plant is very capricious and demanding to care for, cover it with a plastic cap with air holes, thus creating the most favorable microclimate.

Highly rated automatic watering for indoor plants deserved among flower growers, for whom a long absence from home is a common occurrence. Regular business trips, extended vacations or over-employment - there are many reasons to skip watering flowers, but now this will not be an acute problem. In each case, an automatic watering system for indoor plants will come to the rescue.

You can organize automatic watering with your own hands or purchase it ready-made. The choice of one or another option depends on several factors: how much money the owner of indoor plants is willing to spend on arranging automatic watering, whether he has time to make the system with his own hands, how many indoor plants are in the room. Familiarization with various options automatic irrigation systems will help you decide, stop on homemade technology or refer to products made in the factory.

A simple solution to the problem

If long absences are not the system and the problem of watering in the absence of the owner occurs infrequently, you can resort to the most budget way retaining moisture in houseplants. For this you will need:

  • Abundantly moisten the soil in pots.
  • Remove plants from sunny areas and move them to a shady spot. This measure will reduce the evaporation of moisture. It should be noted that the proposed method is not suitable for all pets. If a certain types simply slow down their development, then the state light-loving plants may worsen significantly.
  • Preliminary removal of buds, blooming flowers and dried leaves will help to reduce moisture consumption.
  • Pots are collected in a large container - a basin, trough or bath. The bottom of the container is covered with a layer of expanded clay by 5 cm, after which it is poured with water. If possible, wet pieces of sphagnum are distributed between pots with indoor plants. The whole set is covered with foil.

Comment! Greenhouse conditions not suitable for indoor plants with pubescent leaves, which will begin to rot with a lack of fresh air flow.

Upon arrival home, the flowers should be returned to their usual conditions and accustomed to open space should be gradually. The proposed automatic watering option has a lot of drawbacks, so it is better to resort to advanced automatic watering systems for indoor plants, which are easy to build with your own hands or install ready-made structures.

Drip irrigation

Drip irrigation - great idea for pets, which migrated from greenhouses and open areas of the garden. The method is characterized by simplicity, low cost and reliability. The principle of operation is as follows:

  • The basis of the automatic watering system is a plastic bottle.
  • Several small holes are pierced on the lid.
  • The bottle is filled with water, the neck is closed with a mesh or gauze folded in several layers, the cap is twisted.
  • The container is lowered into a pot with a houseplant neck down and fixed in this position.

The volume of containers with water for automatic watering is selected taking into account the size of the container. If the container with indoor plants is large, 2-3 bottles may be needed. The best water supply will be provided by a cut bottom when plastic container will turn into a kind of funnel.

Wick system

It is not much more difficult to organize automatic watering for indoor plants with your own hands using wicks. In this case, the flow of moisture goes through the cords, one end of which is immersed in a container with water, and the other is in the ground with a houseplant. If the rope enters the pot from above, it is recommended to fix it with a hairpin or peg. Another way of designing automatic watering is also possible, when the cord is inserted into a container with a flower from below through a drainage hole. This procedure is carried out in advance, at the stage of planting flowers. All that is required for the grower is to periodically fill the tank with water.

Attention! Arrangement of automatic watering from below is recommended for indoor plants that prefer a light substrate.

If, in addition to automatic watering, the usual method of irrigating flowers is used, the containers must be equipped with a drainage layer. When using exclusively wick automatic watering, organized from below, you can do without drainage. The design of wick irrigation comes with the use of synthetic cords; ropes made of natural threads should be discarded. The reason is the rapid deterioration of the wick, which, with regular interaction with water, will soon rot and break.

Automatic wick watering of indoor plants needs to be adjusted. Simple laws of physics apply here: the higher the water container is relative to the flower in the pot, the faster the moisture will seep into the ground. Therefore, before a long departure, it is better to adjust the amount of moisture that indoor plants will receive in advance.

Medical droppers are great helpers

Another simple option for arranging automatic watering is to use medical droppers. The principle is identical to automatic wick watering. Basic steps:

  • Prepare systems (droppers) according to the number of containers with indoor plants.
  • Simply blowing through the tubes will help make sure there are no cracks.
  • On the one hand, all droppers are assembled into a single bundle, but not pinched, a weighting agent is attached, and the entire structure is lowered into a tank of water.
  • The second end is brought to a container with a houseplant.
  • The water container is necessarily located above the flowers, its volume depends on the number of outgoing tubules and the needs of the plants for irrigation.
  • When the entire automatic watering system is assembled, the droppers open. Usually, a slow mode is set so that the substrate does not oversaturate with moisture.

For craftsmen who are familiar with the basics of electronics, it will be interesting to build an automatic watering system using an arduino controller. In this case, a container intended for a houseplant will be simultaneously equipped with several controllers, which includes:

  • soil moisture control;
  • dispenser;
  • liquid level indicator.

Of course, the basics of charting and programming are not familiar to everyone. Therefore, if you want to facilitate the process of caring for indoor plants, it is better to turn to ready-made analogues of the “smart pot”, which will be discussed separately.

Clay granulated or hydrogel

Ways to provide a houseplant with automatic watering during prolonged absence a bunch of. In outlets where indoor flowers are presented, you can purchase a special granular clay or hydrogel. These tools will cope with the task of maintaining soil moisture at the right level by quickly absorbing water and gradually returning it to houseplants.

Basic actions:

  • A capacious container is selected, where the selected agent is poured with a layer.
  • A plant is placed on top, the root system of which remains in an earthen coma.
  • The space between the soil and the walls of the container is filled with the remains of a special clay or hydrogel, after which the surface is covered with plastic wrap.

A similar method of automatic watering of indoor flowers is effective for a long time. The advantage of the solution is that the houseplant is not subjected to the transplantation procedure, which sometimes negatively affects further growth and becomes the cause of the disease. If the absorbents begin to dry out, water is added to the hydrogel or clay pot as needed.

A colorful example of automatic watering using a hydrogel is shown in the photo:

Capillary mats

Another way to organize an automatic watering system for indoor plants is to use capillary mats. This is practical device represents a special rug, in the production of which materials with high hygroscopicity are used. The principle of operation is extremely simple:

  • Houseplants in containers with drainage holes at the bottom are placed on a capillary mat.
  • One edge of the rug is immersed in water.

    Tip! It is better to choose kits that additionally include two pallets.

  • In this case, in big pallet pour water.
  • A smaller container with holes in the bottom is placed inside.
  • A capillary mat is laid on top, on which indoor plants are installed.

Naturally, as water is absorbed, it is added to an external container. Manufacturers claim a two-week ability of capillary mats to provide indoor plants with automatic watering.

Cones and jars

One of the most simple ways how to make automatic watering of indoor plants with your own hands, purchase a special pear on a leg. There are many original varieties of a simple little thing - birds, balls, frogs, snails, painted in bright colours, organically fit into the interior with indoor plants. Plastic products are made, the automatic watering system operates extremely simply: before a long departure, the container is filled with water and inserted into a pot with an indoor flower.

In the process of drying the soil, air penetrates the leg and pushes out the liquid, which moistens the substrate and root system plants. Opinions about the practicality of such automatic watering among flower growers were divided. Some argue about a metered supply of moisture, others complain about the problems of waterlogging the soil with houseplants. Everyone decides on the appropriateness of using it independently, but as a temporary measure, this is quite suitable option. If systematic automatic watering is necessary, it is better to refuse such a tool.

Occasionally, automatic watering is equipped according to the principle of drinking bowls for poultry. In this case, a container with a houseplant is placed in a deep pan, where a jar of water is placed upside down, in the lid of which there are holes. As needed, water flows through the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot to the roots of the houseplant. But the proposed system requires adjustment so that moisture is distributed in the right amount, did not pour out of the jar instantly, or vice versa, did not leave the houseplant without water.

Comment! Regardless of the chosen method of automatic watering, it should be tested in advance before departure. Do not rely on the smooth functioning of the automatic watering system in your absence, so as not to destroy indoor plants.

Ready systems

When there is no desire to arrange your own automatic watering design, you can resort to ready technologies. There are several options for automatic watering offered by the distribution network. Most popular:

  • microdrop systems;
  • planter with automatic watering;
  • ceramic cones.

Products differ significantly in cost, so everyone will be able to choose the right solution for their own wallet, based on the number of indoor plants and the duration of use.

Micro drip irrigation systems

Owners of impressive collections of indoor plants should take a closer look at the micro-drip automatic irrigation system, which is a reduced copy of structures designed for irrigating vegetation in greenhouses or in the garden. It functions by connecting to central water supply. The built-in electronic timer provides automatic watering due to the supply and shutdown of water at a pre-programmed time. If desired, a soil moisture sensor is additionally purchased. With such an automatic watering system, you won’t have to worry about indoor plants in the event of a long business trip or vacation.

Comment! When installing a micro-drip automatic irrigation system, which depends on centralized water supply, it is not possible to shut off the water supply in case of departure.

If the collection has no more than 30 pots with medium-sized indoor plants, pay attention to the micro-drip automatic watering system, which is equipped with a reservoir. Tubes with droppers at the end come out of the water tank to each copy of the collection of flowers. Droppers are in simple execution made of plastic or represent a ceramic tip, which is fixed in the ground with a houseplant.

Adjusting the intensity of automatic watering with a conventional dropper is carried out manually using a special wheel. Automatic watering systems equipped with a ceramic tip are more practical. The presence of soil moisture sensors provides automatic adjustment supply or stop water for indoor plants.

An example of a micro-drop automatic watering system for indoor plants is shown in the photo:

Cache-pot with automatic watering

Modern technologies have penetrated into all spheres of human life, a prime example- "smart pot" or planter with automatic watering, wide range of which is represented by the brand Lechuza. The product is a set of two containers: the inner one contains indoor plants, the outer one contains water that enters the root system through special wicks.

Usually the planter is equipped with a water indicator, so it is not difficult to monitor the liquid level and the need for topping up. A self-watering pot can be purchased for a plant of any size, from compact violets to a chic branching ficus. The Lechuza catalog offers examples of standard equipment. Set includes:

  • external planter;
  • container for a houseplant;
  • water tank;
  • humidity level indicator;
  • buffer layer.

The assembly procedure is quite simple. After planting, it will take 3 months for the roots of the plant to reach the bottom and be able to independently provide themselves with moisture. If necessary, you can purchase high planters, where the plug-in container makes it possible not to fill the container with the substrate to the full depth.

The smallest sizes of planters with automatic watering are 10-13 cm, such models are in demand in offices for placement on the desktop. For impressive size houseplants, look to the Cubico collection, which is designed for floor use. All self watering pots are light weight.

Attention! Models large sizes equipped with a stand with wheels that can withstand weights up to 180 kg.

This element is extremely convenient if you need to relocate a houseplant. Due to the presence of recesses at the bottom of the pot, the design with wheels is firmly joined and securely hidden under the planter.

Starting the automatic watering system is quite simple. The algorithm of actions includes the following steps:

  • The bottom of the self-watering pot is preliminarily filled with a special Pon substrate, which perfectly doses the moisture supply.
  • A part of the soil mixture suitable for this houseplant is filled up.
  • The plant itself is planted.
  • The rest of the container is filled with soil residues.
  • For 12 weeks, the pet is watered in the usual way so that the roots reach the bottom.
  • After the allotted time, the tank is filled with water, after which you can completely switch to the automatic irrigation system.
  • Manufacturers claim the ability of self-watering planters to maintain the desired level of humidity indoor flower for 3 months, periodically checking the water level indicator does not hurt.

A planter with automatic watering has a wonderful feature: it can be placed not only indoors, but also exposed to open space. The plastic of which the pot is made is resistant to UV radiation, mechanical stress and is not afraid of low temperatures. The bottom of the housing contains a drain hole closed with a stopper. When operating a planter with automatic watering on the street, the cork is removed. This measure will prevent the risk of waterlogging the soil with a houseplant during natural rainfall. Excess rainwater will freely go outside.

Another advantage - interchangeable indoor unit with handles. This design allows you to easily transplant plants or form a root system.

Ceramic cones

Much easier to operate, and therefore lower in cost, is an automatic watering device in the form of a ceramic cone. Such peculiar "carrots" with plastic tubes are gaining more and more popularity among fans of indoor plants. A ceramic cone designed for automatic watering is buried in the soil, the other end is lowered into a water tank.

In principle, this is an advanced drip irrigation system using medical droppers, which was described above. The advantage of the solution when purchasing a finished product is the absence of the need for regular control over the water supply. The process of automatic watering occurs due to the independent flow of liquid during the period when the soil of indoor plants dries up.

It is definitely impossible to judge the practicality of such a method of auto-polling. Manufacturers claim uninterrupted operation of the system, the only condition is to fill the tank with water in a timely manner. Fans of indoor flowers are not always satisfied. Periodically, situations arise when the cone becomes clogged and automatic watering of plants stops, that is, control over the process is still necessary. The solution to prevent clogging will be to move the water tank to more high place, then you will have to make sure that there is no excess moisture in the soil with a houseplant. In a word, the problems are the same as with a do-it-yourself watering system for houseplants.

If there are few indoor plants, and there is no space for the tank, the ceramic cone is put on plastic bottle, which is fixed directly in the pot. As a temporary measure, this is a very suitable solution for automatic watering.

Conclusion

The choice of one or another option for automatic watering depends on the number of indoor flowers. For regular automatic watering it is better to dwell on ready-made microdrop systems that are connected to central water supply or equipped with a reservoir. You can also choose a pot with automatic watering for indoor plants. Help save money various systems do-it-yourself automatic watering. The main condition is to test any design until a long absence.

Automatic watering of flowers in pots is the topic of our article.

Watering home flowers is a very sensitive and delicate matter. Their timely satisfaction of the need for water is a guarantee of full flowering and general health indoor plants. It is this attitude towards green pets, a guarantee blooming winter and summer home clearing.

What is watering, that is, how do indoor flowers get water? Watering can be:

  • top, when we ourselves water the flower pots;
  • intrasoil, when watering is carried out by supplying water to the ground of the pot using a dropper or flask;

  • root, when water enters from below and rises through the plant from the roots to the top.

The main components for the proper development of landings are:

  • oxygen,
  • fertilizer,
  • water.

Oxygen is supplied to the roots through upper layer soil. When watering from a watering can, as the soil dries in the pot, a dry crust forms. Which becomes an automatic obstacle to the supply of oxygen to the roots. This is one of the important reasons why it is better to use automatic watering.

The second reason is the human factor. We simply may not have enough time to timely watering colors.

The need to use a watering system for houseplants

As much as we love home plants, caring for them takes quite a lot of time. And that upsets us a little. Particular attention should be paid to timely watering:

How does a pot or planter for flowers with a root watering system work?

Root watering can be carried out using a pot and planter, which supply water to the roots according to the principle shown in the photo. Such pots are also called smart.

Irrigation system potted plants root irrigation consists of:

  • from two containers. Of which the outer one is a decorative planter into which water is poured. And the inner one is a reservoir with a system and drainage;
  • drainage is constantly wet. And the roots of the plant, reaching out to it, replenish their reserves with moisture;
  • water is poured into the pots through a watering hole specially designed for this purpose;
  • such smart pots are usually sold with a water level indicator in the kit;
  • in order to remove excess water at the bottom of the planter there is a sleeve.

But, they fight. Therefore, if a cat climbs onto the windowsill, the likelihood that it will not hook on the watering can is very small. And the fragments broken glass On the floor, we have absolutely nothing to do. Such plastic products in this case will be more reliable.

Automatic watering of indoor plants using flasks is carried out as follows:

  • First of all, the ball must be filled with water;
  • insert the tip into the ground of the flowerpot;

Operating principle:

  • when the soil dries up in a flowerpot, the air released in this case enters through the tip into the flask;
  • thus the air replaces the water and it flows out to water the plant.

How is wick watering houseplants

The principle of this method of watering indoor flowers is very simple. It is based:

  • on the use of a conventional wick;
  • such a cord is a connection between water and soil in which a flower grows;
  • with its help, the plant drinks water;
  • water and a wick are in the lower stand to the flowerpot.

Devices in the form of cones are also popular. Their use is very simple:

  • the cone is screwed onto the neck of an ordinary plastic bottle;
  • before that, the bottle is filled with water;
  • the cone is inserted into the ground of the pot;
  • water gradually seeps into the ground.

If there is a need to apply fertilizer to the soil where the flower grows, then it can be added to the water for irrigation. And the device for automatic watering itself will deliver the fertilizer to its destination. It should be noted that in some cases, fertilizers may be sold complete with irrigation cones.

Automatic watering of indoor (home) flowers with a controller or programmer

Before that, we talked about fairly simple automatic watering. But there are systems consisting of several components. This set of parts includes a timer, which is called a controller or programmer. An irrigation controller is needed in order to use it to set a program. According to the program you set, the plants will be watered:

  • start at the specified time;
  • continue for a certain period of time
  • end when programmed.

Automatic drip irrigation system for indoor plants (flowers) can water both one flower and a large number of them.

What is an indoor plant watering indicator

The flower watering indicator is provided to determine the water level in a container or planter. It shows when your participation in watering is necessary - filling the container with liquid. Flower pot with watering indicator, it is a very convenient way to take care of room green bed.

Worried about your indoor flowers and worrying about vacations, long stays away from home? If you do not want to leave the apartment in the care of relatives or neighbors, an automatic watering system for house plants will help solve the problem. Find out what it is and how you can organize a sprinkler on your own.

How to choose automatic watering for indoor plants

If you know in advance that you will have to be absent for some time, do a few things to keep the plants as moist as possible. In a few weeks, it is worth canceling all top dressing, you can cut the buds and flowers. It is important to reduce the illumination: remove the plants from the windowsill or curtain the windows. In parallel, choose the method of automatic watering that suits your conditions.

Flower pots with automatic watering

Sold in stores, designed for automatic subsurface irrigation. They work on the principle of capillary raising of liquid to the roots. They are called smart pots, automatic planters and so on. In fact, they are a double vessel equipped with a reservoir, a separator barrier, and a special liquid level indicator. A plant is planted in one pot, water for a flower is poured into another. Water percolates slowly, evenly, penetrates into the soil as it dries.

The plant, thanks to such a system, consumes as much fluid as it needs for full growth and development. Excessive moisture, acidification of the soil, the influence of extraneous factors are excluded. The disadvantage of a self-irrigating pot is that it is effective only if the plant is mature and has a well-developed root system. Otherwise, the flower will not be able to draw moisture. If the plant has been recently planted in a pot with an automatic watering system, it will have to be watered in the classical way for the first few months.

Automatic watering of flowers with ceramic cones

Often flower growers use these simple designs, which includes a cone and plastic tubes. "Carrots" are stuck in an earthen clod, and the free part is placed in a tank of water. There is no need to control the process of supplying liquid - it comes after the soil dries under pressure from the vessel. Similar automatic watering systems for indoor plants are produced by Archimedes, Weninger, Brigadier Werkzeuge, etc.

Ceramic cones are reliable, differ high quality but have minor flaws. In some cases it does not form the right pressure, the flowers do not receive water, and you have to look for appropriate place for water container. If you set the tank very high, you can fill the plant and destroy it, if it is low, there is a risk of drying out the earth in a pot.

Micro-drip automatic watering system for indoor plants

It is convenient to use if the grower has a large collection of plants located in the same room (balcony, loggia), greenhouse. The micro-drip system is connected to the central water supply, works at a given time thanks to a special timer. For premises small sizes, medium-sized greenhouses can use options with a tank.

Among flower growers, the AquaPod 5 automatic drip irrigation system is popular (price - about 2000 rubles). Its main component is a barrel, from which 5 thin tubes come out with droppers at the ends. The system is connected to the water supply using a hose with a diameter of 4 mm. If you choose such automatic watering for indoor plants, keep in mind that it is not suitable for flowers with a delicate root system, such as orchids.

Autowatering for flowers with enema balls

Multi-colored cones-balls invented domestic producers especially so that people can go on vacation with a calm heart. They are practical, comfortable, look beautiful and serve as an additional interior decoration. In order for the balls to start working, they must be filled with water, inserted with a thin leg into the ground. When the earth begins to dry out, water is released under the influence of oxygen entering the tube. These devices are affordable, but inferior in reliability to other systems: they can dose liquid poorly.

Prices for automatic watering for indoor plants
