But to choose among the variety of varieties of curly beans one that will satisfy both taste and aesthetic needs is another question.

We propose to resolve it immediately. So, the topic of our article is the best varieties of curly beans with photos and descriptions.

To begin with, remember that curly beans, like bush beans, are divided into two main types:

-grain (shelling) beans. The fruits are well-known to us beans-beans. The shelling bean pod has a parchment layer inside that fills the space between the beans. This makes the pod itself tough and generally not eaten.

- asparagus (sugar, green) beans . Main value green beans, as the name implies, in pods. There is practically no parchment layer between the beans in sugar beans, so the shoulder blades grow tender, juicy, crispy, suitable for freezing. Pods of asparagus beans are eaten in an unripe state. Although if you keep them on the plant until biological maturity, you can harvest beans. True, these grains will be inferior in size to the grains of shelled beans.

There are varieties of semi-sugar curly beans - a cross between grain and green beans. The parchment layer in such varieties is present in small quantities, therefore, at a young age, its pods can be eaten like asparagus. As it matures, the pods become tougher, and in the future it is grown as a sheller, for the sake of grains.

Tatyana Kuzmenko, member of the editorial board of the Sobcorrespondent of the online publication "AtmAgro. Agroindustrial Bulletin"

Beans contains a large amount of vitamins, so it should be grown in every garden plot. And if it also has a decorative look, then it can be planted instead of flowers. Curly beans do not require much space and can decorate any fence or wall.

Usually climbing bean is grown as an annual plant, but there are varieties that are perennials.

Curly bean is a long stem, its length can reach 5 meters. Medium-sized leaves are located along the entire length of the stem. The leaves are heart shaped and bright green. Also, flower stalks are formed along the entire length of the stem, which subsequently form into pods.

Fruits are produced in pods. There are varieties of ornamental and edible curly beans.

Curly beans are divided into three types:

  • grain beans. The plant produces pods that form beans in themselves. These beans are edible, but the pod is too tough to eat.
  • Black Eyed Peas. It is also called capsicum or sugar. This species is notable for its pods. The beans in the pods are formed small, and the pods themselves have a delicate structure. The pods are added to fresh salads, boiled for soup and frozen for future use. The collection of pods is carried out until they are fully ripe.
  • Semi-sugar beans. This species has the benefits of grain and asparagus beans. The pods are edible at an early stage of maturity and become tougher as they mature. Fully ripe beans can be eaten with internal beans. Planting this type is more advantageous, because you can get all the options for a vegetable from it.

Blauchilda. This bean variety has purple flowers, stems, pods and even leaves will stop purple as they grow. The variety is considered late, since 90-110 days should pass from germination to technical ripeness. To get an early harvest, you need to grow these beans through seedlings. The first flowers appear quite early and are formed throughout the summer, so the harvest can be phased. The pods are 15-23 cm long. Both pods and beans can be eaten.

When growing this variety for the sake of the pods, remember that the pods must be harvested early or they become tough. Care is quite simple and does not differ from other varieties.

fiery red beans. A very common variety. It has red flowers, green leaves, thin stems. The length of the stems reaches 2.5-4 meters. This plant does not tolerate frost, even the weakest, so it is worth planting seedlings only after all frosts, not earlier than June 5-10. The flowering of fiery red beans occurs in June-September. Young pods can be used whole, but mature pods are unsuitable for food, internal beans are taken out of them. At any degree of maturity, beans must be boiled, as raw pods contain toxic substances. These substances are rapidly destroyed at high temperatures.

Bean Purple Lady. This variety does not have a long stem, its length is only one and a half meters. The pods grow 15 to 18 cm long and are tubular in shape. This variety is mid-early, 50-55 days pass from germination to full maturity. The variety is distinguished by white beans, which have a very interesting taste. The fruits can be harvested throughout the summer.

Spanish white beans. This variety is grown for its white, tasty fruits that do not have thick skins. Moreover, these beans are five to six times larger than conventional varieties. It is the beans that are used for food, which reveal all their taste qualities after cooking. These beans make delicious lobio, bean stews, and soups. The variety is considered medium-late, 72 days pass from sowing to the start of harvest.

green giant. This variety is notable for the fact that fruiting occurs over several months. Fruiting begins on the 55th day after sowing and continues until the onset of frost. Only the pods are eaten, and they do not become hard and can be used at any time of collection. The length of the pods reaches 22 centimeters.

Dolichos. This variety is not intended for human consumption. These fruits can be fed to livestock or used as green manure. In the gardens, Dolichos is grown exclusively in decorative purposes, it has bright pink, crimson, white or lilac flowers. The leaves may be green, reddish or purple. The height of the stem reaches 4 meters. Pods also play a decorative role and decorate the vine before the start of frost. The color of the pods can be green, purple or burgundy.

Growing legumes is not difficult, but you need to know the basic rules for planting. A landing site must be chosen without drafts. The sun's rays will not damage the stems, but in extreme heat they will overheat and dry out.

planting beans

To get an early harvest, the seeds are planted in April and grown at home or in a greenhouse. When growing seedlings at home, it is worth remembering that plants need proper and long-term lighting. Often, without sufficient lighting, seedlings are stretched and depleted.

Before planting, it is necessary to prepare the ground. It is necessary to prepare a nutritious, but light substrate. The seeds are soaked in warm clean water so they grow faster.

Seeds should be put on wet material or cotton wool, seeds are covered with material on top. You need to make sure that the cotton wool does not dry out. Some experts soak the seeds before germination and only then plant them in the ground. Germination may take several days.

The seeds are laid out on the substrate, covered with one centimeter of the substrate and watered. When seedlings appear, they are transplanted into separate pots and placed in a well-lit place.

Care of seedlings should be carried out more carefully so that the seedlings are healthy and strong. They can not be placed in drafts and subjected to strong temperature changes. Before landing on permanent place in open ground it is necessary to carry out hardening of seedlings. To do this, seedlings are exposed to a greenhouse or a colder room. First, hardening is carried out for 30 minutes and gradually the time increases.

A bed for planting beans should be prepared in the fall. Site preparation rules:

  • Potassium and phosphorus fertilizers are laid out on the site for planting beans. Potash fertilizers are used at the rate of 120-150 g for every 10 square meters. Phosphorus fertilizers are laid out in an amount of 250-300 g for every 10 square meters.
  • The entire site is deeply dug up and left for the winter, at this time no maintenance of the site is required.
  • In the spring, potash and phosphate fertilizers, humus or manure are distributed on the site.
  • The soil is dug deep again.

After the threat of frost has passed, around the beginning of June, the seedlings can be transplanted to a permanent place.

On the prepared site, grooves are made at a distance of 40-50 cm. Such a distance between plants will facilitate further care and enable seedlings to develop properly. Between plants you need to maintain a distance of 8-10 cm.

Seeds can be sown immediately in open ground, in which case it is necessary to protect the sprouts from frost. In open ground, seeds are sown in early or mid-May. To do this, the area with the planted seeds is covered plastic wrap. Periodically water the seeds. The film can be removed after the danger of frost has passed, or in early June. By this time, the seedlings should develop side shoots.

Since the beans have long lashes, for it you need to organize special props. It is most convenient to make props before planting seedlings in a permanent place. You can plant beans next to the fence and then you will not need to build special supports.

As a support, you can use rods stuck in the ground. You can also install special nets, they are still used in the cultivation of cucumbers.

The simplest design is to install two supports and nail a cross beam to them. It remains only to tie the ropes and, as the lashes grow, tie them to the upper beam.

If you do not need to grow long lashes, then at a plant height of 30 cm, pinch its top. Then the growth of the seedling slows down. From such a plant, you can get an earlier harvest, but it will not be as much as with a regular whip.

Young plants should be watered very little. Excess moisture at the beginning of growth will lead to abundant leaf formation, this will prevent the plant from forming a large number of flowers and fruits. During the flowering period, moisture should be sufficient.

Without a sufficient amount of moisture, the flowers fall off, which means that fruit set stops.

Throughout the entire period of growth, seedlings must be weeded and loosened. Weeds can score young plant. To get rid of regular weeding, the surface of the earth around the plants can be mulched with peat, crushed bark or other suitable material. Loosening helps oxygen to flow to the roots.

Harvesting

Different varieties may begin fruiting at different times.

Harvest Rules:

  • Plants planted through seedlings begin to bear fruit in July.
  • Plants that have been planted outdoors can be harvested in August.
  • Fruiting will occur before frost, so it will need to be harvested every week.
  • During the period of abundant fruiting, the crop is harvested every other day, this contributes to an even more abundant fruit formation.

Curly beans have their own care characteristics, but even a novice gardener can handle them. Useful, beautiful, not requiring a lot of space and tall plant just needs to be planted in every plot.

Decorative beans- a climbing herbaceous vine, annual or perennial, grown with us as an annual.

It's unpretentious interesting plant prompted me to make another trip to the natural world, in order, first of all, to understand which beans are considered decorative.

The name "bean" comes from Greek word"phaselos" or "phaseolos" - boat, prow. The name is given because of the fruits of the bean, which are shaped like a canoe.

Genus Beans (Phaseolus) has about 150 species of the legume family, most of which grow in subtropical regions of Africa, America and South Asia. These are usually climbing, rarely erect, herbaceous annuals or perennials. The leaves are trifoliate, with stipules, on long petioles. Axillary flowers are collected in more or less long racemose inflorescences. The fruit is a flat or cylindrical bean, the seeds are large, the weight of one is 1 g.

The common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) occupies the first place among cultivated species. This species is native to Latin America. This annual plant is grown in bush form (up to 70 cm), semi-curly (up to 1.5 m) and climbing (up to 3–5 meters or more).

A climbing variety of the common bean connects properties vegetable beans and excellent decorative qualities.

Curly beans are a wonderful ornamental crop.

It not only bears fruit abundantly, but also decorates the site very much. Reaching a height of up to 3 meters, 25-30 days after sowing, it is covered with beautiful flowers, and then with pods, which are often also very decorative.

Its densely leafy vines can decorate fences or arbors.

Another type of ornamental bean is fiery red beans, or Turkish beans (Phaseolus coccineus). This is a purely ornamental culture, bred as a beautifully flowering climbing plant.

It was the decorative look that first appeared in Russia. He came to Russia relatively recently - in the 16th century - from Turkey and France. It was first called beans, and since then our decorative beans have a different name - “Turkish beans”. The common bean, grown as a vegetable, came to us only in the 18th century.

Turkish beans are an annual climbing liana with bright red, light pink or white flowers in racemes. Flowering is long all season until autumn.

This fast growing liana, rises to a height of 4 meters. Leaves three-lobed, numerous. With such leaves, the beans, planted densely near any support, braid it completely, which makes it possible to use the beans to decorate vertically standing elements in the garden or green screens delimiting the garden into zones.

Usually this beautiful plant used to decorate walls, fences, balconies, gazebos, terraces and other buildings that require decoration. When creating various flower arrangements, decorative beans can serve as a wonderful backdrop. This is one of the options for its use in landscape design.

ornamental bean growing

Agrotechnics of decorative curly beans is basically the same for both common beans and Turkish beans. Beans propagate by seeds. Growing curly beans is not difficult.

There are two ways to grow ornamental beans from seeds: by sowing seedlings or by sowing in open ground. To get earlier flowering, you should grow climbing ornamental beans through seedlings. Sowing is done at the end of April. It’s not worth it before, otherwise the seedlings outgrow, and it will be more difficult to transport such large beans from home to the site. In addition, beans do not like transplanting, so it is better to transplant a younger plant.

Seeds are pre-soaked. To make germination more successful, scarification can be carried out. But I didn’t have any special problems with the germination of decorative beans. Soak for two days in a damp cloth. Then we sow in fertile soil to a depth of 1 cm. It is better to plant each seed in a separate pot. After 3-4 days shoots appear. After two weeks, seedlings can be fed with liquid nitrogen fertilizer.

We plant seedlings in a permanent place at a distance of 15-20 cm, when the threat of frost has passed, i.e. for central Russia - in early June. In this case, the transplant must be carried out very carefully so as not to damage root system otherwise the plant may die.

Ornamental beans also grow well when sown in late May - early June in open ground at a distance of 20 cm between nests and 2-3 seeds in each nest.

Turkish beans grow best in full sun, but they tolerate partial shade. The soil must be well fertilized before planting.

It is simply necessary. Beans are growing a huge green mass. To maintain high growth rates and a three-month almost non-stop flowering and fruiting, abundant nutrition is necessary. Therefore, young vines are planted in fatty, rich, slightly acidic or neutral soil.

Curly bean care

In order for the beans to bloom profusely and form frequent, large leaves, it is very good to mulch the plant with humus. The layer of humus must be at least five centimeters. When shrinking, the mulch layer must be updated periodically.

During the summer, it is advisable to carry out several dressings with a complete mineral fertilizer. However, fresh manure and droppings should not be abused.

Beans ornamental refers to moisture-loving plants, therefore, requires regular and plentiful watering. If the plant is mulched with humus, then it will have to be watered much less frequently.

Timely installation of supports is required.

It can be a chain-link fence, a wooden or metal support, and if you are planting a plant against a wall, then you need to stretch special cords or ropes along which the beans will climb, braiding the wall. The first flowers appear in July.

At sufficient watering and nutrition, beans are able to bloom even in autumn.

By August, fruits begin to appear - long and very spectacular pods. Depending on the variety, the pods may have a different color. This bean has an extended flowering period (flowers appear from July until frost), so the pods different sizes. Accordingly, not all seeds ripen, but only on the first pods. However, mature seeds are more than enough for planting next year. Leaf color in autumn, which is quite rare for annual plants turns dark red. Moreover, not all the leaves turn red, but partially, and it looks very elegant.

Beans ornamental varieties

Bean flowers are very beautiful. bright red at natural look, as well as in some varieties, for example, "Red-flowering", "Winner". Different varieties of flowers different color. "Raspberry Ring" - pink, "Golden Nectar" - yellow. There is also a white-flowered form. There is a mixture of colors called "Little Red Riding Hood" - various color options will be presented in one package. Flowering is very abundant and attracts everyone's attention.

Among decorative curly beans,

which belongs to the common bean species (Phaseolus vulgaris), the varieties of lilac curly beans are the most interesting.

The Dragon Tongues variety is very attractive.

This variety of beans is also called Georgian or purple. She is beautiful not only blooming. The plant is decorated with variegated yellow-purple pods 12-15 cm long.

These photos show a decorative type of beans. This is a photo of Turkish beans and their varieties.

Summer residents and residents country houses they love varieties of decorative curly beans for their easy planting and undemanding care and reproduction. Ornamental beans are one of the favorite plants of gardeners. In the article - a guide to growing different types plants, descriptions of varieties, tips and photos.

Characteristics of ornamental beans

Ornamental beans - picky and practical plant. It is allowed along the walls, along fences, arbors. The main thing is that the support must be strong and not break under a large mass. Beans grow quickly, grows up to 5 meters in length. The plant loves heat, so it is better to plant it in a sunny area.
Beans of all varieties of beans are edible, except purple. The rest are useful, they contain magnesium, zinc, iron, calcium, chromium and vitamins A, B, C, E. At the same time, beans are low-calorie, only 25 kcal per 100 g and contain vegetable proteins.

Ornamental beans saturate the soil around them with nitrogen, which accumulates on the roots. Therefore, the yields of potatoes planted near the plant increase by 70%. Also, decorative beans protect against late blight. To do this, it is grown right between the potatoes. Green manure and composts are made from the leaf mass of beans.

Varieties of ornamental beans

Varieties of ornamental beans do not differ in the size or color of the leaves, or the taste of the beans. Only the color of the flowers varies. Bean varieties:

  1. Mammoth. It is a variety with beautiful white flowers. They differ in shade and size. Mammoth flowers are larger than the rest.
  2. Purple beans - the flowers are purple in color. It is one of the most common and differs only in that its beans cannot be eaten.
  3. Bicolor beans - a variety that is characterized by a combination of white and rich red French beans.
  4. Turkish beans are another Russian favorite variety. It has orange-red, fiery flowers. This variety is undemanding minimal cost time and effort to care, grows up to 3 - 4.5 meters.
  5. Golden nectar is an unusual bean variety, notable for its orange color of flowers.
  6. French - a variety with bright red, burgundy flowering. Flowers of the same color are found in bicolor beans.

Sowing and propagation of ornamental beans

The plant is planted in a place warmed by the sun. It is best if cucumbers, potatoes, cabbage, and tomatoes grew on the site before that. Preparations for planting are made in the fall. It is necessary to dig up the soil and fertilize with superphosphate and potash fertilizers with the calculation of 0.25−0.3 kg of the first and 0.15 kg of the second per 10 sq. m. Due to this, the flowering of the culture has a rich color, and the liana develops well in the plant.

Sometimes the soil has to be limed before planting. It should also contain a small amount of nitrogen: the excess accumulates on the roots and harms the plant. Therefore, no nitrogen fertilizers are applied. Their addition is fraught with the development of too large a vegetative mass and a decrease in the number of fruits.

ornamental bean sprouts

In autumn, the soil for growing beans is fertilized with humus (4 kg per 1 sq.m.). Spring add mineral fertilizers and organics - 20 g of potassium chloride and 30 g of superphosphate per 1 sq.m.

Ornamental beans are grown in two ways: by sowing directly into the ground or for seedlings. The latter method implies an early start of flowering, but still not so popular with gardeners, because the plant does not like transplanting very much. Before planting, the seeds are soaked for a day in water at room temperature with the addition of a growth stimulator. After that, the seeds are dried and proceed to planting.

Sowing decorative beans for seedlings

Growing decorative beans for seedlings begins at the end of March. Beans are scattered in peat pots to a depth of 1.5 cm. Only one family is planted in one pot. They grow fairly quickly. When the plant reaches a height of 10 cm, it must be provided with support. The temperature at which seedlings should be kept is + 18 ... + 22 ° C. There is no need to pinch the shoots.

Transplantation must be done while the plant is not yet developed, otherwise it does not adapt well. It is best when the beans have previously grown in the soil. If not, the beans are transplanted along with a small lump of earth.

Sowing ornamental beans on open ground

Sowing beans begins in April 10-15. This is early sowing. The plant is most often planted in early to mid-May. The main landmark is the time when cucumbers are planted, which, like beans, are afraid of frost.

Before sowing, the soil should warm up to + 12 ... + 14 ° C. Before sowing, the seeds are left for 20 minutes in a 1% solution of potassium permanganate. After that, they are planted in the soil to a depth of 1-2 cm in holes, pouring 2-3 beans into each.

It is desirable to leave at least 25-30 cm between holes, and 45-50 cm between rows. If the soil is warm, sowing is carried out on a flat surface. If it's cold, there is ground water- make beds. A wooden support 2.5-3 m high is installed near each hole. Plastic or metal structures are not suitable, since the plant cannot wrap itself around them.

Support for ornamental beans

Care ornamental beans

Still young beans are afraid of the cold. Average daily temperature air, suitable for normal growth +18 °C. If it is smaller, the beans are covered with a protective film, spunbond or other material. Mature plants tolerate low temperatures better and do not die even with frost.

When caring for ornamental beans, regular watering is very important, especially if the weather is dry, hot. Also needs weeding. On dry days, beans are watered directly from the spout of a watering can, removing the sieve. Pour into the middle of the rows, between crops. Water suitable settled, not containing chlorine, warm.

Important! When watering, water should not fall on the buds!

They are fed with superphosphates, any organic fertilizers, but not fresh manure. Of great benefit to decorative beans is mulching with hay, straw, sawdust, wood shavings.

No dry or liquid fertilizers should not fall on bean leaves. The leaves of the plant are tender and can get burned, which water does not always help to remove. Because of this, dry fertilizers are poured directly onto the soil, trying not to hurt the plant. When making liquid, directly from the spout of the watering can, they are carefully poured in the middle of the row.

Ornamental beans are a picky, useful plant. Ugly walls are covered with beans, gazebos are decorated, and with its help they create beautiful arches or decorate different zones site.

The varieties used to plant to decorate the garden in modern times are distinguished by a dense flowering cover and a special, beautiful flowering, can be colored. They apply for creating green hedges or artistic elements.

Plants are grown as annuals. Seedlings grow rapidly, forming long branched vines. There are also bush specimens. In autumn, like other beans, pods ripen on the branches. Their colors are directly dependent on varietal characteristics.

The color of decorative bean pods directly depends on the variety.

The beans themselves also have an interesting color: pink, reddish, speckled purple and others are distinguished.

Correct fit

You can plant beans seedling way, but there is no particular need for this. Landing in open ground is carried out mid-May to early June.

Seeds are soaked for a day in water, and then placed in the soil at a depth of 1 centimeter. The method consists in digging holes at a distance of 40-45 cm, which must be carefully watered. They drop 2-3 seeds at once.

Harvesting of seedlings in greenhouse conditions takes place in the middle of April at temperatures from 18 to 22 degrees above zero. Each sprout needs a separate pot. If it is already too stretched out, and the transfer to the site has not yet been carried out, then the plant is provided with additional support.

This species does not tolerate transplanting well, therefore growing seedlings is not effective.

Care

A heat-loving landing is needed protect from frost. At cold temperatures, crops are carefully insulated with a film or other material. They are also needed hill and set the direction of growth.

A favorable condition is the presence of light, fertile land, with sufficient moisture and light. beans required good watering, especially in the heat. It is advisable to mulch the surface at the roots with sawdust or straw: this way moisture is retained longer.

Ornamental beans grow well in light, fertile soil.

All organic fertilizers are suitable for this crop, excluding fresh manure.

Application in landscape design

Decorative beans are a great tool vertical gardening used in design. It is used to decorate hedges, fences, arbors. plant used in the creation of arches, colorful pergolas.

An interesting solution is the creation of garden compositions that add zest to the space and add coziness. Plantings decorate the beds with abundant flowering in summer, hanging bright pods add brightness in autumn days.

Forming an arched shape, the seeds are sown on the sides of the structure on both sides. The tops of the grown vines are fastened or rise even higher.

Diseases and pests

Harmful insects may already live in the seeds, therefore, before sowing, it is necessary to inspect planting material for the presence of bean grains.

Only healthy specimens are suitable for use, the rest are to be destroyed. This gray bug is determined by the holes formed, the larvae.

To protect the fruits from infection, after harvesting, the part intended for reproduction in the next season is processed metathion. They should be stored in tightly tied bags, at zero temperature.

If light brown spots with a yellowish-green stroke are present on the leaves in a chaotic manner, this indicates the presence of bacteriosis. Affected sprouts are immediately removed, and neighboring ones are processed. copper chloride. After 10 days, the spraying procedure is repeated. This disease is also noticeable on the seeds in the form of the same spots.

Ways to ennoble land plot enough. Curly beans, charming and unpretentious, are perfect for this purpose.

With such a culture as beans, many are familiar with childhood. Soups are boiled from it, added to salads, stews, and preparations are made. Beans belong to the legume family. Grows in a climbing herbaceous plant or semi-shrub. The color of the fruit can be varied, with a very interesting pattern.

Beans are among the top ten useful products. Due to the content of about 20% protein in terms of energy value, it is equivalent to meat, the balanced composition of the product supplies beneficial substances almost all body systems.

Simple agricultural technology and unpretentiousness in care, the possibility of obtaining a generous harvest of healthy and nutritious fruits - all this encourages you to set aside a piece of land for beans in your area. Even a novice vegetable grower can handle growing beans. Beans are successfully cultivated in Belarus, Ukraine, the Moscow region, the Urals and even Siberia.

Terms of planting beans in open ground

Bean planting in spring photo shoots

Beans are heat-loving crops. They start planting it from the second half of May, when the threat has completely passed. return frosts. Maximum low temperature, which young seedlings are able to survive, is 0 ° C, at -1 ° C, seedlings die. If the frost was short, then the sprouts will survive, but their development will be slow, which will negatively affect the yield.

Covering with a film, agrotextile or building a temporary shelter will help to protect against a sudden drop in temperature, as an option - make a fire at night so that it smokes until the morning, this will help ward off small short-term frosts.

When planting beans, focus on weather:

  • At a depth of up to 10 cm, the soil should warm up by 12-15 ° C (according to popular observations, this approximately coincides with the flowering period of chestnuts).
  • To start sowing a little earlier (in the future, this has a positive effect on yield), the soil should be “warmed up” by covering it with plastic wrap. After sowing, cover the beds again until the night temperature is +12 °C.

Upright varieties should be sown first, after a week, start sowing climbing varieties. Bush varieties are recommended to be sown in early July (just at this time the beds will be freed after harvesting early ripe vegetables).

Planting dates for beans in the middle lane and Moscow region

Experienced gardeners perform sowing in several stages. From mid-May to early June, beans can be sown at intervals of 10 days.

Dates of planting beans in Siberia and the Urals

In open ground, seeds can be planted in early June.

Should beans be soaked before planting?

How to soak beans before planting and how to process

Seeds are sown immediately in open ground without growing seedlings. Whether to soak the beans before planting, think carefully: the prepared seeds will need to be planted immediately, despite the weather conditions or sudden business that has appeared. Therefore, calculate your time so as not to spoil the seed in vain. In addition, soaked seeds must be planted in moist soil, because with a lack of moisture, the sprouts will simply die. Therefore, when planting, water the holes and plant the soaked seeds in the dirt or water after planting.

To get earlier shoots and protect young shoots from diseases, it is advisable to pre-treat the seeds before planting.

Start processing in the evening before sowing. The process takes place in several stages:

  • For 10 minutes, place in a slightly pink solution of potassium permanganate, then rinse with water.
  • Then soak in infusion for 2 hours. wood ash, rinse again.
  • Wrap in a damp cloth and leave at room temperature until morning.
  • Immediately before sowing, dip in a solution of boric acid for 5 minutes.

When deciding whether to soak beans before planting, consider the following factors:

  • If you plant in dry soil and there is no way to water, it is better not to soak.
  • If it will rain soon and you are sure that you will have time to plant, you can soak and do not water when planting.
  • It is advisable to soak if already late dates, and I want to get shoots faster.
  • Landing large areas it is better not to soak in the field, you will not have time to water, and the seeds may die from a lack of moisture in fairly dry weather.

Choosing a place to plant beans

illumination

For the cultivation of beans, choose a well-lit place, avoid drafts and strong winds. Young immature sprouts are very sensitive to this. Often beans are sown along fences, under apple trees.

Soil composition

Clay soils are contraindicated because they do not pass water and air well, and the roots of the plant do not tolerate dampness (they simply rot). Loose soils with a nutritious top layer are best suited.

predecessors

Take into account the crops that were previously grown on the site. Excellent predecessors are carrots, potatoes, cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, eggplant.

Preparing a site for planting beans

Site preparation consists in digging to the depth of a shovel bayonet and introducing one of the nutrient compositions (per 1 m²):

  1. Compost or humus (4 kg), 2 tablespoons of superphosphate and dolomite flour, 1 tablespoon of ammonium nitrate.
  2. About 2 kg of humus or compost, 30 g of superphosphate, 20 g of wood ash.

The scheme of planting beans in open ground and the depth of embedding

Planting bush beans scheme:

For climbing varieties, the row spacing should be 45-50 cm. They will need support.

Place a few seeds (5-6 pcs) in each well, pour warm water over it. When seedlings appear and give one true leaf, leave 3 sprouts in the hole (the rest can be transplanted or simply removed).

Planting scheme for green or asparagus beans

It is also convenient to plant string beans, or asparagus, in rows: the depth of the grooves is about 5-6 cm, the row spacing is left 40-60 cm wide, 10 cm is enough in a row between the beans.

How to plant beans in rows, look at the video:

The method of planting beans described in the video is very convenient for use in summer cottages and backyards.

Joint planting of corn and beans

Corn with beans planting and care photo

Curly beans are often grown together with corn. Landing is carried out under a chopper: they make shallow holes with a chopper, raking the ground in one direction, throw 2 corn seeds and 2-3 bean seeds each, rake the hole with their foot and move on. The distance between the rows is 0.7 m, in the row between the holes - 30-40 cm.

Further plant care is simple: timely weeding, if it is in the steppe. If at home, you can occasionally water to get a rich harvest.

Should beans be watered after planting?

When planting in the steppe, the beans are not watered if it household plot, it is better to plant the beans in the dirt and sprinkle with damp earth (before planting, pour some water into the holes or rows). This does not form an earthen crust on the surface, and it will be easier for young tender sprouts to break through.

How many bean seeds germinate

Germination is accelerated by seed treatment with a growth stimulator and soaking.

Untreated bean seeds begin to germinate 7-10 days after planting. If the air and soil temperatures are below the recommended values, then the seeds germinate longer by 5-7 days.

How to care for beans outdoors

Beans are unpretentious in care, require minimal effort on the part of a person. It is useful to spud young shoots to give them stability.

How to water

The plant is moisture-loving. It is important to ensure regular balanced watering if you want to get a lot of beans. Pay special attention to this moment during the formation of the pods. Watering is carried out about 1 time per week, determine the water rate for the bush “by eye”, the main thing is to prevent the soil from drying out. For irrigation, it is better to use softened water with a temperature of at least 18 ° C. To this end, you can install a barrel in the garden to collect rainwater or settling tap water.

How to feed

Beans are usually not fed. However, a high level of agricultural technology will allow you to get a much larger crop. Culture is responsive to top dressing, but do not overdo it. Otherwise, the tops will actively develop, which will reduce the ovary of the pods.

If you took care of laying the nutrient layer during planting, it is enough to feed three times per season.

  • The first top dressing is carried out 1-1.5 months after germination. Apply a complex of mineral fertilizers with an emphasis on nitrogen and phosphorus. Superphosphate can be added (30-40 g per 1 m²).
  • For the formation of fruits, a second top dressing should be carried out 3 weeks after the first. Apply 10-15 g of potassium salt per 1 m² of area.
  • The third time they are fed after another 3 weeks.

Remove weeds from the area regularly.

After watering, gently loosen the soil in the trunk circle.

Diseases and pests of beans

Infected seeds are the source of disease, so discard poor-quality seeds (wrinkled, darkened, unevenly colored, with strange dots or spots) and be sure to carry out pre-processing. Choose more resistant varieties (we talked about them earlier). In the southern regions, sow later so that the plants are formed at a temperature of 25 ° C. Also, a measure of the fight against diseases and pests is the observance of crop rotation (grown in the same place with an interval of about 4 years).

Bean diseases:

Anthracnose on beans

  • Anthracnose - the whole plant with leaves and fruits is covered with rusty spots.
  • Powdery mildew - is recognized by the presence of a whitish coating.
  • Ascochitosis - spots with a black core and a blurry contour appear on the leaf plates. The defeat most often occurs at the fruiting stage - it is too late to treat.
  • Rust - the leaves are covered with brown spots, which quickly flood the plant, literally killing it. Most often passes from weeds-euphorbia. If the disease occurs even before flowering, treat with a 1% solution of Bordeaux liquid.
  • Deforming and yellow mosaic - sheet plates become covered with yellow specks, they become wrinkled, growth rates slow down. However, the virus may not affect the fruit.
  • Bacterial wilt - the edges of the leaves become covered with yellow spots, then they turn completely yellow and fall off. The disease develops with high humidity so avoid sprinkler irrigation.

Bean pests

Pests are not often disturbed. Among them:

  • whitefly
  • bean weevil
  • sprout fly

In addition to the above preventive measures, timely harvesting (before the pods crack) will help protect the beans from pests. To kill pests, keep the beans in the freezer for 3-4 days.

Before and after flowering, it is possible to treat with a broad-spectrum biological product.

The stems and leaves of beans can be attacked by slugs. It is important to carry out weeding in a timely manner, because gastropods love cool humid environment. These pests are collected manually or special traps are used.

Bean harvest time

The timing of harvesting depends on the variety and variety of crops.

You should not overexpose the asparagus beans in the garden - in the dried state, the quality of the product is lost.

If you plan to use the fruits for preservation, they can be harvested slightly unripe. To store beans dry, you need to wait until they are ripe. But do not be late so that you do not have to collect beans from the ground.

Ripening can occur unevenly: in the shade of its own tops, some ovaries remain greenish, and at the tops - the pods are already dry. Remove the last, leave the rest to ripen.

It is not necessary to manually extract the beans from the pods. Take a sack or spread a blanket, lay out the well-dried pods, and with moderate force, walk with a stick or other similar object. Remove the husk, and sort the beans, dry and store. Store in glass jars with a tight-fitting lid (it is desirable that it also be made of glass or metal).

Varieties of beans with photos and descriptions

The common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) is a cultivated species for beans. Among the varieties (curly or bush), bush beans are most often preferred.

A variety of varieties complicates the choice. Consider the classification depending on the adaptability of the variety to certain climatic conditions of a certain region.

Of course, any gardener wants to decorate his site with flowers that would have an attractive appearance and do not require much care. In this case, ornamental beans come to the rescue - a plant that successfully combines both of these qualities. In addition to the garden, it can also be grown at home.

Description of ornamental beans

Ornamental bean is an annual climbing plant of the legume family. It is a powerful vine with dense foliage strewn with flowers, which later turn into pods. The beans are variegated in color and quite large in size. how garden culture ornamental beans have been used for more than six centuries.

Flowers can be of different shades depending on the variety. For example, Mammoth beans have white flowers, French beans are red, and Dolichos are bright pink.

Dolichos ornamental bean flowers look like hyacinths

The word "bean" comes from the Latin word "phaseolus", which means " sailboat". The name of the bean is due to the fact that its flowers resemble a ship under sail.

Methods for planting decorative beans

There are two ways to grow beans in your area: direct sowing into the ground and through seedlings.

Landing by direct sowing in the ground

It is worth noting that this method is more preferable, since decorative beans do not tolerate transplanting. If you live in a warm region, then you can sow beans from mid-April, when the soil temperature at a depth of 10 cm reaches 11–15 ° C, while residents of central Russia will have to wait until mid-May.

Growing ornamental beans in open ground

To provide ornamental beans necessary development, you need to properly prepare the site and follow the recommendations for caring for the plant.

Site preparation

A place for planting decorative beans must be prepared in the fall. To do this, dig up the site you have chosen (note that, firstly, it must be located in the sun, since ornamental beans are a heat-loving crop, and secondly, be well ventilated to prevent the spread of diseases), and then fertilize it:

  1. potassium fertilizers. The most popular types: potassium chloride, potassium sulfate, potassium magnesia. A sufficient amount of potassium in the soil will provide better adaptation to temperature changes, tolerance of lack of moisture, and accelerate metabolic processes. Dosage - 0.15 kg per 10 m2.
  2. Superphosphate fertilizers. There are several types: monophosphate, granular, ammoniated. Necessary to strengthen the root system, slow down the aging of the plant, nourish well. Dosage - 0.25–0.3 kg per 10 m2.
  3. If necessary, carry out liming of the selected area (5–14 kg of lime per 10 m2).
  4. After these procedures, fertilize the area with humus (4 kg per 1 m2).

Do not forget to re-dig the site in the spring and add organic fertilizers (manure, humus) and mineral mixtures to the soil, for example, the same superphosphates. Avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Because beans are legume, then it itself is able to release a sufficient amount of nitrogen into the soil. An excess of this component will lead to the growth of green mass to the detriment of flowers.

The best predecessors for ornamental beans are wheat and barley. After them, a sufficient amount of moisture and nutrients necessary for the full growth of the plant remains in the soil.

Rules for the care of decorative beans

To provide decorative beans with abundant flowering and protect it from diseases, you need to follow a few rules:

  1. If possible, try to remove dried leaves and flowers.
  2. Feed your plant regularly with mineral fertilizers (superphosphates) and organic matter. Manure works well, but it doesn't have to be fresh.
  3. Provide the beans with a constant, slightly moist soil. Try to water between the rows, avoiding moisture on the plants to avoid the appearance of fungal diseases.
  4. Mulch the soil after watering to prevent crusting. Straw, sawdust, wood shavings are well suited for mulch.
  5. For more abundant flowering and disease prevention, use growth regulators (Zircon - prolongs flowering and helps to endure adverse conditions, Krezatsin - enriches with vitamins). Drugs must be used strictly according to the instructions.

Diseases of ornamental beans

Like all crops, ornamental beans are also susceptible to various diseases. The most common are anthracosis and bacteriosis.

Anthracnose - fungal disease, develops most rapidly in wet, cold weather. With anthracnose, the plant becomes covered with brownish spots, then the flesh of the leaf turns yellow and dies. Pods are also affected. To protect your plant from this disease, follow these rules:

  1. For planting, choose strong, healthy beans with no signs of disease (brown or brown spots), soak them in potassium permanganate.
  2. If one of the plants showed signs of anthracnose, then try to cut out the affected areas, as the disease is contagious.
  3. As a treatment, spray the beans with 1% Bordeaux mixture.

Anthracnose develops rapidly in wet, cold weather.

Bacteriosis is a disease caused by various types of bacteria. The most obvious sign is that yellow spots appear on the leaves, which then turn brown in the center. The occurrence and development of the disease depends on the initial presence of bacteria in the beans. As a preventive measure, it is necessary to warm the seeds with hot air (600C) for 1.5 hours. Unfavorable conditions can accelerate the course of the disease. As a treatment, experts recommend adding mineral mixtures to the soil (they increase resistance to disease) and spraying with 1% Bordeaux liquid.

Please note that beans can only be planted again in the affected area after 3-4 years.

Bean leaves affected by bacteriosis are covered with yellow spots

Growing ornamental beans at home

If you do not have a garden, then you can grow decorative beans at home - for example, on the balcony. In this case, you can sow the seeds directly into the ground. To grow ornamental beans at home, you will need a pot with a volume of at least 3 liters and a support. When the sprouts are 20-25 cm tall, pinch off the growing point if you want your plant to be bushy.

To prevent the beans from suffering from excess ultraviolet radiation, provide them with a weak shadow. Water as needed, as both excess and lack of moisture harm the beans. Top dressing - complex mineral fertilizers, for example, diammophoska (a mixture of potash and phosphate fertilizers, dosage - 3 g / l 1 time in 10 days). The best varieties for indoor cultivation: Violetta, Raspberry ringing, French, Golden nectar.

Decorative beans are often used to decorate balconies.

The basic rules for caring for decorative beans are simple. By doing them, you will easily achieve good results in growing this wonderful plant - both in the garden and at home.
