*As a rule, the consumption of materials is indicated by the manufacturer. The volumes of primer, paint and varnish are indicated based on the kitchen, as in the photo, or any other size of 3-4 linear meters.

So, we have a kitchen of interior aesthetics of the late nineties in color baked milk, not the most relevant today. Our task is to make the facades white and fit the kitchen into a modern classic interior.

We will repaint only the facades, we will leave the “insides” as they are. I will show the whole process on the example of one facade.

Step 1: decide on a color

In order not to stain the fittings during the staining process, remove it with a screwdriver.

Then carefully wash the kitchen and dry it with a towel. Facades must be free of dust, dirt and grease. We wipe the cleaned surfaces with White Spirit or other degreaser.

Step 3: primer, sand

Now we start applying the alkyd primer. It can be tinted in the future color of the kitchen, but I always use white. We prime the facades in two layers. This is a slow process: alkyd primer dries up to twelve hours.

Between the layers it is necessary to walk with sandpaper to level the primed surfaces and ensure good adhesion (adhesion). I recommend sanding after every coat of primer, paint and varnish, except for top coats. The more intense the sanding, the smoother the surfaces of the facades will be.

Step 4: start coloring

Do not use glossy paint: at home it is almost impossible to apply it evenly. Matte will be able to mask the flaws of the novice master. I prefer chalk paint: it is extra-matte, durable, with good coverage.

We apply paint in two layers, each dries up to half an hour. You can speed up the process by using a hair dryer.

If you use a brush with natural bristles, then the painted surfaces will turn out to be more textured.

Step 5: varnish

We cover the primed and painted surfaces with a matte varnish with a brush with artificial bristles in two layers (we sand between the layers, remember?).

Let me tell you a little about the features of the varnish. Polyurethane takes longer to dry than acrylic, is more expensive, and has a strong odor. At the same time, the surfaces covered with such a varnish are stronger and denser. However, if you do not spend much time in the kitchen and you do not have pets ready to scratch your updated kitchen, feel free to choose acrylic.

Instruction

Decide what color your future will be. Think about whether you are ready to change curtains, upholstery on a soft corner. How will different useful little things, which are on display, with a new painted surface. It is better to solve these issues at home, then in the hardware store you will either have to buy ready-made alkyd paint, or tint it in the selected color from specialists.

Remove fronts from all cabinets. In order for the paint to be smudge-free, you need to work on a horizontal surface. Side panels you can paint it on the spot by placing a film or newspaper under the cabinets, then you don’t have to scrub the floor from splashes. Cover the areas that cannot be painted with masking tape.

Unscrew the handles and hinges from the facades. If there are glass in the doors, try to pull them out. Or place newspaper on the glass and secure it with masking tape around the perimeter so that the paint does not seep through.

Fix fine-grained sandpaper in a special holder or wrap a small bar with it so as not to hurt your fingers when sanding the kitchen. Sand the paneled parts and non-removable decorative elements by pressing the sandpaper with your fingers or fixing it on the rail. If there is MDF film on the doors, pick it up in the corner and remove it from the entire surface before sanding.

Prime the furniture. If your facades plastic surface, pay attention to a special primer for plastics. For wooden doors and chipboard, ordinary paint primers are suitable.

• Veneer- a cut of natural wood glued to the slab. Requires exactly the same care as a real tree, just as capricious and just as beautiful. It is impossible to restore this coating with your own hands if damaged.
• PVC film- more commonly used for chipboard lamination, since this is the most budget option. The film can imitate any type of wood, although not entirely convincing. The main drawback is that with prolonged exposure to moisture and temperature, the film peels off. Repair is partially possible.
• Melamine film- serves as the basis decorative paper impregnated with melamine resin. Plus such kitchen facades– higher resistance to moisture.
• Acrylic film- paper-laminated plastic, characterized by much higher strength, resistance to mechanical damage and dampness. This coating can have a matte, satin or glossy surface, and therefore rarely imitates wood. All colors are available - white, red, blue, black and all possible combinations.

The undoubted advantage of the three listed film options is the possibility of finishing radius facades. And such a solution always looks original. Moreover, the size and configuration of the kitchen have little effect on the price.

• Acrylic panels- here the color or pattern, including photo printing, is applied directly to the MDF board, and then filled with transparent acrylic glass. Such an impeccable gloss enhances any color - white, purple, crimson. Material preparation

4. The surface is polished with grinding sponges, brushes or grinders. Processing removes glue and paint residues, minor scratches and chips. Grinding is carried out in three stages with abrasive materials with coarse grains - P180, medium and fine.
5. Then the part is cleaned of dust and primed. This is best done with a sprayer, but you can use a roller or even a brush. The primer dries in about 8-10 hours.
6. After drying, the surface must be again cleaned with an abrasive with the finest grain.

Material painting

You can paint kitchens with both a roller and a brush, but it is still better to use a sprayer. This significantly reduces the time of work and allows you to get uniform coloring on any surface - flat, milled or radiused.
