How to treat onions for yellowness. green onion turning yellow

Onions are one of the most common crops that can be found in any garden. And this is not surprising, because you can’t do without it in the kitchen. However, if for some reason the onion feathers begin to turn yellow, dry, curl, and the plant itself begins to die, the harvest may not wait.

Why does the onion turn yellow? There are many reasons: these are diseases, and pests, and improper care.

Causes of yellowing of onion leaves

In what cases is yellowing - variants of the norm?

If the color of onion feathers changed at the end of summer, that is, in August, then you should not worry. At this time, it ripens, it is time to harvest it, so the withering of the green part of the plant is a natural process.

In addition, there are varieties with early growing seasons. They mature a little earlier, so he ahead of schedule turns yellow.

Wrong care

If at the height of summer instead of lush greenery on the beds you see yellow feathers, the reason for this may be improper care:

  1. Wrong watering. Due to this error, the pen very often begins to turn yellow.
  2. Heat or rain. If the summer turned out to be too dry, or, conversely, too rainy, the onion in the garden will change color.
  3. Nitrogen deficiency in the soil.

Also, quite often, onion leaves change their color due to damage by pests or diseases.

Pests

Like any garden crop, onions have their own pests, due to which it gradually turns yellow and disappears. To save the crop, urgent measures will have to be taken.

onion fly

When lilacs bloom and dandelions bloom, this insect lays its eggs near the onion or between its green leaves. After about a week or a little earlier, larvae appear from them, which gradually eat up the bulb. If no action is taken, the plant will die.

Onion secretive proboscis (weevil)

This is a black small beetle, which is also called the weevil. He wakes up in mid-April, and in May, their eggs are already hiding on the leaves of plants.

After some time, larvae hatch from them - yellow caterpillars with a dark head. They eat onion leaves from the inside, which is why the onion gradually turns yellow, curls and dries out.

onion thrips

There is a group of pests that are different small size(up to 1 mm) and feed on juice various plants- thrips. These include onion thrips.

onion moth

Because of it, the tips of the onion feathers turn yellow first, then the whole plant. Adults fly only at night, laying yellowish eggs in the ground in beds near plants or near leaves. They hatch into greenish-yellow caterpillars about 1 cm long, covered with brown warts.

Caterpillars penetrate the leaves and begin to eat them, as a result, the onion disappears.

Onion diseases

Another reason why the color of the onion feather changes is disease. There are many of them.

Consider the most common:

  1. Fusarium root rot. The bottom of the bulb is affected, and the onion turns yellow.
  2. Rust. It affects both onions and garlic. Feathers show formations yellow color. Both greens and bulbs stop growing and die.
  3. Bacterial rot. If you cut the bulb lengthwise, you will see signs of the disease on it. Onion scales become translucent, softened. The carriers of this infection are onion flies, thrips and other pests. If affected bulbs were planted, the plants will be oppressed, with yellow leaves.

How to help yellowed plants?

What to do if the onion turns yellow, how to help the plants? So that plantings do not suffer from pests and diseases, it is better to take care of preventive measures in advance.

However, if they have already attacked the onion feather in the garden, they will have to use special preparations, which, of course, will also affect the quality of the crop.

onion fly

To combat it, the drug "Bazudin" is used. It helps against onion fly larvae. Mix 30 g of granules about 0.5 l of sand and add to the soil. This amount of the drug should be enough for 15 square meters. m. of land. If the larvae are already inside the bulb, then spray the plantings with Creocide PRO.

Onion Stalker

If this pest has bred on the onion bed, it must be treated with Karbofos. Attention! After spraying, the onion feather is not recommended for consumption.

First, prepare a solution: dilute 60 g of powder in 10 liters of water. Then treat them with beds: 1 liter - per 10 square meters. m landings.

thrips

Is the plant suffering from thrips? Spray it with a solution of "Confidor". It is not difficult to prepare it: it is necessary to dilute 1 ml of the drug in 10 liters of water. This amount is enough to process 100 sq. m. landing.

onion moth

The Iskra solution will help against it: dissolve 1 tablet in 10 liters of water. To process 10 sq. m of onion is enough 1 liter of solution.

Donets rot, bacterial rot and rust

If you planted the affected bulbs, the plant can no longer get rid of the bottom rot. So check in advance planting material and do not use the one that is already spoiled. Or, plant only onion varieties that are resistant to this disease.

Against bacterial rot and rust, only pre-carried out preventive measures will also help.

Top dressing and watering regime

If the onion leaves turn yellow, due to the fact that there is little nitrogen in the soil, fertilize the beds with fertilizers that are high in nitrogen. you can buy mineral fertilizers or use organic top dressing. But, remember, the manure must be rotted.

Most often, the onion turns yellow due to improper watering. It is necessary to water the onions at least once every 3 days, using warm water. If the soil in the garden is mulched, you can do this less often.

Prevention measures: remedies for yellowing onion feathers

In order not to look for the reasons for the yellowing of onion tops in the middle of summer and not to be upset because of a spoiled uro, it is important to prevent the appearance of diseases and pest damage to the plant in advance. What to do?

Preparing the soil and onion sets

  1. Don't forget crop rotation. You can re-plant an onion bed only after 4 years.
  2. Deep digging of the soil, which is done in the fall, is very important. Thanks to it, insect larvae that planned to overwinter in the soil will come to the surface of the earth and die from frost. For example, an onion fly hides at a depth of 20 cm.

  1. Loosening. Several times during the summer, carry out deep loosening, which will help get rid of some of the pupae.

Before planting, hold the onion sets in hot water(45-46 ° C) 10 minutes or soak for 15 minutes in a weak (pink) solution of potassium permanganate.

Prevention of onion fly damage

This fly cannot stand the smell of carrots, so plant onions next to carrot beds. Treat the beds with salt two or three times a season.

The first time the treatment is carried out when the onion feathers grow to 5 cm. Then pour the beds with a salt solution: 10 liters - 300 g. The next time the amount of salt will need to be increased. After 4-5 for after watering, do not forget to spill them with cold water.

This method is questionable, since then a lot of salt gets into the soil, and this will oppress those plants that will later grow in this place, although it helps against insects.

Or treat the beds with a mixture wood ash(200 g), tobacco dust and ground pepper (1 tsp each). And plant onions as early as possible, before the fly takes off.

Rust Prevention

Spray the beds with a solution of copper oxychloride: dilute 1 tbsp in 10 liters of water. drug and add 1 tbsp. liquid soap. After a week, treat with Hom.

Also remember that dense plantings contribute to the spread of the disease.

Prevention of bacterial rot and bottom rot

Do not use diseased bulbs for planting. Before planting, treat the bed with Hom, preparing a solution: for 10 liters - 40 g of the drug. For 1 sq. m you will need 500 ml of solution.

Do not use sevok affected by bottom rot. After the onion is ripe, be sure to dry it in the sun for at least 7 days.

If you do not forget about preventive measures, water and feed onions in time, then the beds will delight the eye with their bright colors all summer long. in green. And in the fall you will reap a rich harvest!

Video: why did the onion turn yellow in the garden and what to do?

Onion is probably the most popular of the cultures, because no one can do without it. garden plot. And this is understandable, because in addition to their taste, onions have a huge number of useful properties.
But even with such a seemingly simple culture, problems often arise. One of the most common is the situation when green onions turn yellow. If you do not pay attention to this in time and do not start a fight, then the harvest can be lost. This problem is especially relevant for gardeners growing onions for sale.

Causes of yellowing green onions
To deal with the problem of onion feather yellowing, you need to find out why this happens. And there are plenty of reasons.
Reason one: natural phenomenon. In August, the onions are already completely ready for harvest, so the green feathers begin to fade, signaling that the bulbs themselves are already ripe and it's time to remove them from the garden. This is the only reason you shouldn't worry about.
Reason two: pests. There are several. Absolutely for all types of onions: both for ordinary onions and for its more noble counterparts (leek, chives, shallots ...) onion fly larvae cause the greatest harm. At the end of May, females lay their eggs either in the ground near the plant, or between green feathers. After a week, the hatched larvae make their way inside the bulb. Feeding on its pulp, they lead to the fact that at first the feathers turn yellow, and then the plant dies altogether.

In order to prevent yellowing, you can use a few tricks.
1. If you plant the bow as early as possible, then even before the flies appear, it will gain the necessary strength.
2. There should not be a permanent place for planting onions.
3. Since the onion fly cannot stand the smell of carrots, you can make beds with these crops next to each other or alternate them.
4. Since mid-May, you need to start using repellents. For example, powder each square meter planting with the following mixture: mix a teaspoon of ground pepper and tobacco dust with 200 grams of ash. Then the soil needs to be loosened.

5. When flies appear, onions can be treated with one of the drugs: Confidor, Leptocid, Mospilan, Nurell-D.

If a preventive measures were not carried out and the larvae had already damaged the bulb, as a result of which the plantings began to disappear, it was necessary to start the fight. To get rid of this pest, you need to take 30 g of Baduzin, mix it with 500 g of sand and add this mixture to the soil (a calculation is given for 15 square meters).
You can also use the drug Creocid PRO, which needs to be sprayed on the affected plants.
But you can solve the problem with folk remedies: dilute 200 g of salt in a bucket of water and pour the onion with this solution. You should not do this if the feather has not yet grown to 8 cm and should not be allowed to fall on the green part of the plant. It is also not necessary to abuse this method, as this can cause soil salinity, and due to excess sodium and chlorine, plants will grow poorly and disappear.
Onion leaves feed on the beetle secretive proboscis and its faces, which eat out longitudinal passages in feathers. Therefore, green onions begin to turn yellow.

To prevent the appearance of this pest, it is necessary to completely clean the beds after harvesting, because the beetle hibernates in the remains of onions; before frost, dig deep into the soil; loosen the ground between the beds, adding repellents to it (mustard powder, ground pepper or wood ash is suitable for this).
Karbofos is suitable for fighting the bug. One package of the drug, diluted in a bucket of water, is enough to process 10 square meters of planting.
Another fan of eating onions is the onion nematode. This small worm, similar to a thread, feeds on the sap of the plant, which is why the green onion begins to turn yellow and dry out, and the bulb itself, as it were, “turns out” outward. This is due to the fact that the rudiments begin to grow through the cracks formed. If you do not fight these pests, then the earth will be infected for decades.

As a preventive measure, you can use the following tips:
1. Onions can be planted in the same place at least after four years.
2. Before sowing onions, sevok should be dipped in water for 5 minutes at a temperature of 45 degrees or for 25 minutes in saline solution(tablespoon per liter of water).
3. Plant marigolds or calendula between the rows of onions. A tincture of marigolds can be watered directly to the plants.

Onion (tobacco) thrips suck the juice from the plant, so the leaves turn yellow and dry out. As a preventive measure, sevok should be dipped in water at a temperature of 45 degrees for 10 minutes and then immersed in cold water. Planting material can be sprayed with Confidor (1 ml of solution per bucket of water) or Spark (one tablet per bucket of water). This is enough to process one hundred acres of land.

It is worth noting that these pests can get along with each other and infect the plant at the same time, so it is better to carry out comprehensive prevention.

Reason three: illness. For example, rust, which causes the appearance of raised dots of yellow. The leaves eventually turn black and begin to fall off. To prevent the development of this disease, the seedlings need to be “warmed up” at 40 degrees for 12 hours; spray mature plant with a solution of copper oxychloride (add a tablespoon of the drug and liquid soap to a bucket of water), and a week later with a solution of "Homa".

The next disease is bacterial rot that affects the bulbs. Brown streaks appear between the scales, which is why the feathers turn yellow. For prevention, the land is treated with Hom before planting (a bucket of water with 40 g of the drug is enough for 20 square meters).

Almost all types of onions are susceptible to bottom rot. The cause of the disease is Fusarium fungi that infect the bulb during the growing season. To avoid infection, it is necessary to plant onions on small hills in order to avoid stagnant water, to carry out preventive measures (everything is suitable as for preventing the appearance of an onion fly).

Reason four: lack of nitrogen. This is the most common reason why green onions turn yellow. What to do? Nitrogen-containing fertilizers must be regularly applied to the soil.

Reason five: improper care, in particular - improper watering. The ideal watering method is drip irrigation. Each variety of onion has its own watering requirements, but universal rules: when the onion begins to take root and grows, it is necessary to water abundantly, in the first half of the day and at least 2 times a week (with the exception of mulched soils). Water should not be cold (18-25 degrees) and soft (hard water can be softened with special equipment).

Reason six: weather. Drought, as well as excessive humidity, negatively affects green onions, so building a greenhouse is ideal.

How to store green onions

Growing green onions is only half the battle. After all, it must also be preserved, especially if it is a source of income.

The first rule: sort out the feathers, removing all the spoiled ones.
The second rule: do not wash the feathers before storage or dry them thoroughly with a paper towel after washing.
The third rule: put dry feathers in a bag, tie it up and make a few holes for ventilation. If the onion has been uprooted, then they must be wrapped in a cloth moistened with water and dry paper.
If you follow these rules, then cut onion feathers will remain juicy green for about 3 weeks.

Growing onions, gardeners often face the problem of yellowing of the feather. Experienced vegetable growers are advised to understand the reason and, if possible, water the onion with folk remedies so that it does not turn yellow. This approach will allow you to use greens for food, because chemicals capable of harming human health. The specialists of the site site will tell you why the yellowing of the onion feather is dangerous, they will help you find and eliminate the cause of the problem.

Why is the yellowing of onion feathers dangerous?

Having noticed the first signs of yellowness on the onion bed, gardeners are in no hurry to fix the problem. Such negligence often causes partial or complete loss of the crop.

Careless gardeners often forget that plants are fed through the foliage. The leaves contain the green pigment chlorophyll, which is involved in the process of obtaining food - photosynthesis. Due to the yellowing of the feather, the onion partially loses chlorophyll and can no longer store food. At the same time, the growth of bulbs stops, the quality of the crop falls, and the productivity of the crop decreases. That is why it is so important to start the fight against onion yellowing in time.

Do not be afraid if the onion began to turn yellow and lie down in the middle of summer. natural process the death of the tops speaks of an early harvest.

Possible reasons

There are several reasons that can cause onion feathers to turn yellow:

  • pest attack;
  • fungal diseases;
  • nitrogen deficiency in the soil;
  • violation of the rules of care;
  • adverse weather conditions.

To save the crop, the gardener needs to find out why the onion in the garden turns yellow, and then make a lot of efforts to fix the problem. First of all, conduct a thorough inspection of the culture.

Pests

To pests onion relate:

  • onion fly;
  • onion secretive proboscis;
  • tobacco thrips;
  • root onion mite;
  • stem nematode.

Each of these tiny pests is capable of producing large offspring. The colony will quickly take over the onion bed, leaving the gardener without a crop.

Onion fly larvae appear towards the end of May and live in the soil. Through the bottom they make their way inside the bulb, feed on the pulp. This causes yellowing of the onion feather and gradually leads to the death of the onion. Damaged planting material rots, exuding an unpleasant odor.

The onion secretive bug is a bug with a body length of up to 2.5 mm. The insect and its larvae cause damage to onion feathers, feed on juicy greens. Damage looks like streaks inside hollow onion leaves. If you cut the feather, tiny larvae will be found inside.

Tobacco thrips has a yellowish or brown body 1 mm long. Beetles and larvae feed on plant sap. Around the puncture site, the leaf tissues die off, the yellowness gradually covers the feather, which leads to its death.

Root onion mites penetrate the planting material through the smallest cracks in the bottom. Insect larvae feed on bulb tissues, damage root system. Because of this, the onion tops turn yellow and die. The bulb is covered with dust, becomes loose.

Stem nematodes are microscopic worms up to 1.5 mm long. The pest penetrates the planting material through contaminated soil, in which it can live up to 10 years. Damage causes yellowing of the onion, deformation of the bulb.

Chemicals

If preventive measures did not help and pests nevertheless appeared, gardeners resort to heavy artillery - they use chemicals. Some products are used for spraying tops ("Confidor", "Mospilan", "Kreocid", "Karate", "Tabazol", "Aktara"), others are watered with soil ("Karbofos"). It is important to observe the dosage and recommended processing times so that the crop does not harm human health.

At chemical combat You can not eat juicy greens for food.

Folk methods of struggle

Folk methods are effective until the first shower. After heavy rains, the event will have to be repeated.

Diseases

Yellowing onions can be caused by fungal diseases. The danger to the plant is:

  • powdery mildew;
  • bottom rot;
  • rust.

Diseases are manifested by the appearance of spots on the leafy part, "powdered" with the mycelium of the fungus. The rotting of the bottom leads to the loss of turgor, yellowing and drying of the foliage.

The best way to fight is prevention. To prevent the feather from turning yellow, observe crop rotation, select healthy planting material, burn plant remains at the end of the season. Effectively warming the onion in the sun before planting, pickling in a solution of fungicide, potassium permanganate.

If the fungus has attacked the plantings, watering is carried out with solutions of fungicides ("Fitosporin", "Fundazol"), spraying with garlic infusion. Three times treatment with an interval of 7-10 days is shown.

nutritional deficiency

Onion tops may turn yellow due to lack of nitrogen. A macronutrient is very important for building green mass, bookmarks nutrients. It is easy to determine the lack of nitrogen - most of the plants on the site become faded, the leaves turn pale, the fruits become smaller.

It is enough to apply nitrogen top dressing, as the onion turns green again. Pour the bed with mullein infusion, urea. You can prepare an infusion of weeds, nettles (200-500 g per bucket of water), keeping it for 7-10 days. After straining, dilute in a ratio of 1:10 and water the onion beds.

The ammonia solution described above will also help eliminate nitrogen starvation.

bad weather

Unfavorable weather conditions can cause the onion to turn yellow. Drought can be controlled by supplemental irrigation. Water the garden warm water root in the morning or evening. The frequency of watering in the usual mode - 2 times a week. During drought, it is permissible to water the onions daily, controlling the level of moisture in the soil.

The construction of a polycarbonate canopy will help protect the garden from waterlogging. Remember that 7-10 days before the expected harvest, onion watering is completely stopped.

Having noticed the first signs of onion yellowing, hurry to find and eliminate the cause of their occurrence. For your efforts, the culture will generously reward you with a useful harvest.

Onion is a non-capricious culture, resistant to temperature extremes, drought, long rains, not very demanding on soil and care. Beneficial features it is difficult to overestimate it - the most sought-after vegetable in any kitchen and the main winter healer. Onions are grown everywhere, ranking among the most popular horticultural crops an honorable third place after potatoes and cabbage. The process of forcing a feather and cultivating beautiful root crops is an exciting and rewarding activity, but only if the plants do not get sick.

Weather problems

Most common problem onion beds - sudden yellowing and drying of the tips of the pen. Without finding out the cause of this phenomenon, you should not run around in a panic with a sprayer and bring the entire periodic table into the ground. A simple drought can cause such a reaction. High temperatures within a week, the lack of precipitation and watering leads to a violation of sap flow, but not to a loss of the ability to increase the fruit mass. Of course, green beds look more beautiful than yellowed ones, but the goal of gardening is not only aesthetic pleasure. The final result - large, filled onion heads - is not affected by this drying.

A similar problem may haunt gardeners who know about the frost resistance of the crop and planted the seedlings too early. The frostbitten tips of the seedlings soon turn yellow and dry out, giving the same picture as during a drought, but without affecting a full-fledged crop.

Onions turn yellow from weather conditions - how to feed?

If the cause of drying is return frosts, then the care of the beds does not change in any way. The feather will grow back, the dry tips in the total green mass will be invisible to either the host or the plant. If the weather is dry for a long time, the site should be watered with sprinkling for 2-3 days in a row. To restore the strength of damaged plants, sprinkle the ground between them with ashes at the rate of a half-liter jar per 1 square meter or spill ash solution. To prepare it, you need to dilute the same amount of ash in a bucket of water and leave for 3-4 days, stirring regularly. The yellowed tips will no longer turn green, but the plant will quickly get out of a state of stress.

Lack of nitrogen

Another reason for yellowing onions - acute shortage nitrogen in the soil. Diagnosing this “disease” is easy - it affects, as a rule, not only onions. All cultures living in the neighborhood also become faded in color with light veins, the fruits become smaller and change shape, sometimes the edges of the leaves are bent and spots similar to lichen are formed. Most often, this ailment is caused by prolonged rains or excessive watering, when nitrogen is simply washed out of the upper nutrient layer to the depth where it becomes inaccessible to the roots.

Onions turn yellow from a lack of nitrogen - how to water?

The only way to cure plants is to apply nitrogen fertilizers. But this must be done smartly and dosed, since active vegetative processes begin from excessive nitrate nutrition - an increase in green mass to the detriment of head formation. Fertilizer is prepared from plant components:

  • green grass;
  • hay, straw;
  • any weeds, it is possible with seeds;
  • food waste plant origin- vegetable peelings, sunflower husks, tea and coffee grounds.

Water is poured into the barrel (basin, bucket), preferably rainwater, everything that was collected on the site and in the kitchen is thrown. We also add sweet things here - old candied jam, crystallized honey, sour fortified wine, expired condensed milk or at least a couple of tablespoons of sugar. We stir this mixture well and defend until active fermentation, which we learn from bad smell. AT hot weather the solution will be ready in 3-4 days, in a cool one - in 2 weeks. We dilute 1 liter of nitrogen compote in a bucket of water and generously fertilize the beds with onions. It is better to do this after or during rain on damp ground. If the weather is dry, then the garden must first be watered. This top dressing is absorbed easily and quickly, supplying plants not only with nitrogen, but also with a host of other useful components. The most significant components of herbal infusions are nettle, plantain and dandelion. This is a real storehouse of trace elements that stimulate growth, increase plant resistance to fungal diseases.

Onion pests

The main enemies of the onion culture are the stem nematode, the onion fly and the secretive trunk. It is extremely difficult to see them on a plant due to small size and inconspicuous color. They can get into the garden with seed, fly in and crawl from neighbors and spend the winter in the beds in the remains of last year's crop. characteristic distinguishing feature residence of unauthorized persons on the bow - the feather turns yellow not at the tips, but along the entire length.

Yellowing from pests - what to water?

Folk remedies for onion flies and secretive trunks are saline and all the bitter sprays that exist in nature. Tinctures of tobacco, pepper, mustard, garlic are prepared for 3-4 days, the concentration - the more the better. If the onion has already turned yellow and there is little time for cooking, you need to throw all the additives into the water and bring it to a boil. After cooling under the lid, you can immediately start spraying. For a nematode, a bitter soul is not enough and the remaining liquid is poured out between the rows of onions. From a fly, there is another proven remedy - insist the skins of green nuts in water for at least a day and generously shed the area with this solution.

Salt solution can be used both for prevention and for destruction. 10 tablespoons in a bucket of water, mix well and pour over the plants and under the root. If this does not help, you need to resort to heavy artillery - ammonia. The bottle is dissolved in a bucket of water, applied with a sprayer over the feather. As a result of processing, burns remain, but pests disappear. Unfortunately, if a massive raid has been made on your garden, folk remedies may be powerless.

Fungal diseases and control methods

Yellow onion feathers can talk about another fungal disease - bottom rot. You can find it by pulling out one plant and examining its spine. In the stage of development of the disease, a light white coating, and if the fungus rampages on the site, the bulbs are softened and covered with gray rot. The reason is thickened plantings, flooding or any waterlogging of the soil. If such a phenomenon has already occurred on the site, in the following years the onion should be planted as far as possible from this zone. Do not use seed from an infected crop, but before new fit process the sevok in a weak solution of potassium permanganate or alcohol. Water the bed moderately, arrange drainage or drain excess rainwater.

What to do so that the onion never turns yellow?

There are a number of proven, biologically based methods that will help you grow large, healthy onions without much difficulty.

  • Every year, change the planting site of all crops, including onions. This will not save you from weather disasters, but from a shortage useful substances in the soil and from wintering pests, this measure is very effective.
  • Apply on site mixed landings. Onions and carrots are proven neighbors that protect each other from pests. Onions planted around currants are also protected from insects by the tart smell of the bush. The plant feels good in strawberries and next to basil, and peas, which are able to draw nitrogen from the deep layers of the soil, abundantly supply growing onion heads with it.
  • Mulching all free land between the bulbs with dry and green grass, which also has its own smell and confuses pests. In addition, the yellowing of onion feathers sometimes causes the bear to walk near the roots. But this pest does not tolerate shady areas, and vegetable mulch creates a permanent shady and wet effect. When temperatures change, the organic carpet keeps the onion beds from freezing or drying out.

Onions dry in July - what to do?

By mid-July, the onion should lie down and dry completely. It's harvest time. The last two weeks, watering completely stops. If weather forecasters predict rains, it is necessary to have time to collect and dry the crop before the moment of precipitation. Having pulled the heads out of the ground, it is advisable to leave them in the garden for another 2-3 days. At high humidity lay in a well-ventilated area, loosely pressing against each other in one layer. After complete drying, cut off the roots with scissors without damaging the bottom, and leave the top 3-5 cm. In this form, the crop can be stored for storage.
