Installation of floor thresholds in doorways: with hidden fastening, multi-level and conventional. Do-it-yourself installation of an interior door: with and without a threshold

When installing interior doors leading to living quarters, the threshold is often abandoned: it prevents you from moving freely, you have to install it on a ready-made new floor covering. However, for those cases when increased insulation is required - kitchen, bathroom, this device is necessary.

Purpose of the product

The threshold was originally an integral part door frame. Today, it is mandatory only for the input block. Represents a plank complex shape, since it must ensure a tight fit of the sash to the box, but at the same time not interfere with opening and closing.

It is necessary to install the threshold of an interior door for the following purposes:

  • sound insulation - a product, especially with a rubber seal, can successfully dampen extraneous noise. Thus, the sounds from the kitchen are completely inaudible in the apartment;
  • an obstacle to smell - even the most powerful hood is not able to completely rid the home of odors. A device, whether simple or automatic, prevents odors from spreading;
  • moisture retention - in the bathroom, especially in the bathroom, the humidity is always high. Among other things, it does not allow dampness to capture the entire dwelling;
  • thermal insulation - the denser the sash adjoins, the better the heat is retained in the room. This is true for any room.

Door threshold of an interior door: varieties

There are several types of thresholds.

  • Wooden - the most popular solution. The most common models are oak and pine. The latter are known for their low price, the former for their very high wear resistance because oak is a high density wood.

Wooden products need periodic maintenance - painting or varnishing. If necessary, such a model can be made and installed by hand. Pictured is a piece of wood.

  • Metal - usually used in cases where installation is required on a joint made of different materials floor coverings. They are made of metals and alloys that are not subject to corrosion. Most often, it is aluminum - a lightweight, non-rusting, wear-resistant alloy. A more expensive option is brass or stainless steel. Ordinary black steel is not suitable, as it is prone to corrosion.

Metal products can be single-level, multi-level - for those cases when there is a difference in height between the floor of two rooms, angular. Preferred finished goods so how to make a plank desired profile quite difficult on its own.

  • Plastic - used in cases where the interior door itself is made of plastic. Plus products - low cost, a wide range of sizes and the widest range of colors, the shade can be chosen completely indistinguishable from the laminate. Minus - low wear resistance.
  • Stone or concrete - are used only when installing the input block, although they are distinguished by the highest wear resistance. If the door is already available, it is extremely difficult to mount a concrete threshold.
  • Cork - the material has excellent soundproofing qualities, flexibility and elasticity. It is suitable for those occasions when between the floor different rooms there is a height difference.

  • Products finished with laminate are suitable only for the corresponding floor covering.

  • Smart threshold for interior doors - modern version, which is fixed not on the floor, but on the sash. This is a movable seal, which, when opening the interior door, does not interfere with movement at all. When closing, pressure is applied to the start button and the automatic device lowers, thereby tightly closing the gap between the door leaf and the floor.

Is shifting smart device completely silent and can have additional functions. So, if you install a product with a brush, it also protects against dust and insects. There are options that can be used with sloping floors. In the photo - a smart model.

Threshold setting

The event begins with the measurement of the doorway. The length and width of the products varies in a very wide range, so the dimensions must be set accurately. Then the device is cut to the desired parameters.

  1. Prepare the opening: remove the old product, if any, clean the floor covering from dust and dirt.
  2. Measure the height of the model, set aside the value on the side racks of the box and make grooves in them.
  3. The wooden fixture is put in place and its position is carefully adjusted with a hammer.
  4. The product is fixed in 2-3 places. For this temporary set bar drill a hole through it to the floor. Then the bar is removed and holes are drilled in the concrete of the desired depth.
  5. The threshold is fixed again and screwed with screws so that the fastener head is immersed in the tree. You can mask the recesses with plaster.

The metal product is fixed in exactly the same way. But the automatic threshold should be fixed on the sash, exactly following the attached instructions.

The video dismantles the process of attaching the device in all details.

A holistic perception of the apartment is impossible without front door. Just as a theater begins with a hanger, so does an apartment start with the front door, and therefore its role is difficult to underestimate. Speaking about the importance of the front door, it is necessary not only to mention its strength and ability to protect against breaking and unauthorized entry, but also about the convenience of its design. into the structure this concept includes the device of the lower part of the door frame, namely the threshold of the front door, which is a functional part door structure. If earlier the installation of doors was carried out in accordance with generally accepted standards and implied the mandatory presence of door thresholds, today a lot of controversy is associated with this issue. Many homeowners prefer not to install a door with a threshold, citing the fact that due to the presence of thresholds, they constantly stumble. The presence of small children in the house is another argument in favor of abandoning the threshold under the door. Is it worth it to refuse to install doors with thresholds? The question is rhetorical, and the answer to it has not yet been found. Someone gives a lot of arguments in favor of the functionality and the need for door thresholds, while someone prefers to refuse. Despite this, experts argue that the thresholds are a significant detail of the door structure, the degree of functionality of which depends on the correct installation. The need to install door thresholds, their features and disadvantages, as well as how to install a door threshold - read on.

Setting door thresholds: the relevance of the problem

The door sill is the lower part of the door frame, which closes its contour, which contributes to a tighter closing of the door. This is ensured by the complete connection door leaf around the entire perimeter of the door frame.

Inexperienced craftsmen who have never encountered the arrangement of interior or entrance doors often refuse to install thresholds, explaining that they are unnecessary and useless, not knowing that this particular part of the door structure has irreplaceable functional characteristics. However, in order to fully respond to all functional characteristics, the door threshold must meet all the requirements for their device. If all the necessary parameters are met, the thresholds perform the following functions:

  • Performs the function of an additional stop for the door;
  • Performs a soundproof function and is a natural obstacle to drafts;
  • Performing a decorative function, it is a kind of delimiter located at the entrance.

You can be convinced of the stylistic value of this technique by imagining an entrance or interior door devoid of this element.

There are situations when the installation of door thresholds is an integral part of the installation of the door structure. Thresholds must be installed between rooms with different functional purposes (bedroom and corridor, living room and kitchen, corridor and bathroom), as well as at the front door. There are situations when homeowners prefer not to install door thresholds between adjacent rooms, however, in this case, due to constant changes in temperature and humidity, the load on the flooring will increase and contribute to a decrease in its service life.

The main types of thresholds and their functional purpose

There are several classifications of door thresholds, each of which involves the division of thresholds in accordance with various characteristics. The first classification involves the division of thresholds according to their location and includes the following varieties:

  • Entrance thresholds of doors;
  • Interior door sills.

These types differ not only in their functional purpose, but also in appearance. Input thresholds, including thresholds for balcony door, designed to keep the room warm and prevent the penetration of dust, drafts and extraneous sounds into the room. For interior thresholds, these functions are completely irrelevant, and therefore, often homeowners prefer not to install them, underestimating their functional significance. Despite this, the installation of interior thresholds is often necessary, and first of all it concerns the entrance to the bathroom or the kitchen.

Important! Due to the fact that the threshold of the interior door is part of the door frame, refusing to install it, you must draw up a joint of floor coverings or a difference in floor levels, if any. For these purposes, plastic or metal thresholds are used.

Materials for the manufacture of door thresholds

Today, the construction market offers to buy and install ready-made thresholds, but their independent production does not lose its popularity. In order to carry out the installation as efficiently as possible, it is necessary to determine the material for the manufacture of the thresholds. To guarantee the aesthetics of the environment and the durability of the product, it is necessary to choose the right texture and color of the material from which the thresholds will be made, to flooring. If it becomes necessary to combine two coated with different textures and colors, choosing a profile for the manufacture of thresholds, preference is given to the material most suitable for one of the coatings.

In accordance with the material used, the following types of thresholds are distinguished:

  • Wooden thresholds- the most common type of entrance thresholds and thresholds for interior doors. Among the extensive range of wooden thresholds offered by construction market, the most popular are thresholds made of pine and oak. When self-manufacturing interior thresholds, it is recommended to give preference to the same materials (mainly oak), due to their hardness and high wear resistance. Wooden thresholds go well with various types floor coverings, however, require specialized care - painting and varnishing;
  • metal thresholds are used mainly in the event that it becomes necessary to overlap the joints of diverse floor coverings. There are single-level, multi-level and corner metal thresholds. Most popular material for the manufacture of metal thresholds is aluminum, which is in a lower price category compared to brass and stainless steel. They are more durable than plastic and wooden structures. Modern entrance metal doors initially equipped with metal door thresholds;

Important! In the process of arranging thresholds for interior doors, experts recommend using ready-made metal profiles, characterized by different section. There are several ways to fasten them - internal, which implies fastening with the help of various inserts and door sill trims, and external - by mounting through holes.

  • Plastic thresholds- structures characterized by low wear resistance, and therefore, they are used only for arranging interior doors. Although manufacturers offer interior thresholds made of plastic in large color scheme, their use is limited by their low strength, which leads to damage to the threshold in case of excessive mechanical stress on it. It is not surprising that plastic is predominantly used for arranging the thresholds of a plastic door;
  • Stone or concrete thresholds are the most expensive and wear-resistant designs. Their distinctive feature is the complexity of installation in the case of an already installed door frame;
  • Cork thresholds due to the flexibility and elasticity of the material used, they are used as interior structures where it is necessary to beat the difference in floor levels;
  • Thresholds finished with laminate, can only be used in combination with a similar flooring material. Distinctive feature such thresholds is the propensity to gradual change forms under conditions of increased exposure to moisture.

Important! Moisture resistance is an integral technical characteristic of interior thresholds. Materials for interior thresholds, installed in conditions of the transition of tiles to laminate, must necessarily be characterized by this quality, since this transition is most often observed in the bathroom or kitchen, where water often gets on the floor and can accumulate under the thresholds.

Key Benefits of Door Thresholds

  • Installation of interior and entrance door thresholds helps to increase soundproof characteristics doors. However, speaking about this advantage, it is important to consider the material from which the door leaf is made. A massive door made of wood has higher soundproofing characteristics, unlike analogues made of less durable materials;

Important! If you are installing a threshold in order to increase the soundproofing characteristics of the door, when purchasing a door frame, give preference to structures equipped with a rubber seal.

  • The presence of an interior threshold in the door frame kitchen door prevents excessive outflow of oxygen from neighboring rooms in case of installation in the kitchen double-circuit boiler equipped with open cam. In this case, it is more efficient to set plastic window, characterized by the presence of a micro-ventilation function, which will contribute to the timely entry of fresh oxygen into the room;
  • Also, the presence of thresholds in the kitchen door helps prevent the penetration of smoke from oil and foreign odors that occur during cooking into other rooms. However, only the interior threshold is not able to completely protect neighboring rooms from odors and smoke - in this case, it is still necessary to install exhaust fan, equipped natural ventilation, or hood over the stove;
  • Entry thresholds provide effective protection rooms from drafts and dust;

The feasibility of installing doors with thresholds in the bathroom and toilet

The toilet and bathroom are rooms where the installation of door thresholds is often quite justified. The benefits of installing interior thresholds in this case can be clearly demonstrated if there is a difference in floor level in these rooms (especially if the floor level in the bathroom is higher than in adjoining rooms). Despite the effectiveness of this design, it is not worth being sure that the presence of this design will completely save other rooms from flooding. And it’s not worth hoping that wooden thresholds will be effectively used for a long time. However, in spite of this, in the case of accumulation a small amount moisture, you can be sure that the threshold will protect the rest of the premises from the penetration of moisture into them.

Important! If you're installing a bathroom door sill as a waterproofing barrier in the event of a plumbing problem, experts recommend opting for concrete or stone interior thresholds.

Installing the threshold of an interior door: how to choose the right sills

After you have floored the adjacent rooms and installed the door leaf, measure the length and width of the gap formed at the junction of the floor coverings. The need for preliminary measurements is explained by the fact that hardware stores offer thresholds of various widths and lengths;

If there is a mismatch in floor levels in adjacent rooms, it is necessary to give preference to multi-level thresholds, which are also commercially available;

To create a perfectly even horizontal connection between floors of the same level, experts recommend using a cork compensator or the so-called door sill trim, made from natural cork tree. This detail is indispensable in case of installation of interior thresholds in a room with sudden changes in temperature and humidity (for example, winter gardens, swimming pools, saunas). Their necessity is due to the ability of a cork 10 mm wide to shrink and expand almost twice.

The most common ways to install door thresholds

Installation of a wooden threshold

The most common question is: "How to make a front door threshold?" is relevant in the event that it becomes necessary to completely replace the door or in case of failure of the old threshold for any reason. In this case, before setting the threshold, it is necessary to carry out a series preparatory activities. They imply the choice of material for the threshold of the entrance or interior door, as well as its stylistic design.

  • If you prefer wood, purchase a ready-made threshold from the hardware store, the dimensions of which correspond to the parameters of the doorway. Before installation, the old nut is dismantled and the landing site is cleaned from the remnants of old building materials. If during the dismantling activities there was a partial destruction concrete screed, it is necessary to remove the broken-off elements of the screed and level the surface with concrete mortar.
  • Next, you need to decide on the size of the future nut. If you are replacing an old threshold, the structure left after the removal of the old threshold will serve as a template for making a new threshold.
  • The installation of the threshold is started after the final drying of the solution. To do this, determine the height of the threshold and, in accordance with the measurements made, make grooves in the lower part of the side pillars of the door frame. Next, measure the width of the door frame and cut to fit. wooden blank. After that, insert it into place and gently tap it with a hammer through the wooden spacer.
  • Drill the wooden threshold in 2-3 places through and through so that clear marks remain on the base. Remove the threshold and on the remaining concrete surface drill holes in the concrete, then hammer dowels into them.
  • Set the wooden threshold in place and screw it with self-tapping screws, deep recessing the hats into the wooden plank. After that, mask the holes formed with putty.

Important! If you are installing a wooden threshold in a bathroom or toilet, it must be of such a height that there is a gap of 5 to 8 mm between the threshold and the door leaf, which is necessary to ensure the inflow fresh air to the bathroom and effective work supply and exhaust system.

Installation of a metal threshold is carried out in a similar way. The only difference is the need additional tools, such as a grinder and a hacksaw for cutting metal.

External and internal ways of fastening door sills

Despite the fact that the threshold, in which through holes are drilled, is easily attached ( external way fasteners), a product with a hidden or internally fasteners are most preferable from the point of view of aesthetic considerations. This is especially true for laminate thresholds, which require a neat appearance. Concealed fastening is carried out in the following way: such thresholds consist of two parts, while Bottom part is fixed to the floor with self-tapping screws to the floor, while the decorative top is fixed on top mounting plate and glued or snapped on.

Important! The line connecting two different coatings should be located exactly at the bottom edge in the middle closed door. Otherwise, while lying or sitting in another room, you will be able to see part of the floor in another room, even if the door is completely closed.

What to do in case of multi-level floors?

In this case, experts recommend using multi-level sills or wide floor sills, which are fixed at an angle. If there is a floor difference from 3 mm to 2 cm, you can easily smooth out the floor difference with the help of multi-level sills, the installation of which is carried out similarly to the installation of single-level sills.

Guillotine threshold - a "smart" novelty

The know-how of modern developers is an aesthetic and practical invention - a guillotine threshold that not only improves appearance floor covering, but also facilitates cleaning of the room.

The principle of the "smart threshold" device

  • Due to the fact that it crashes into the lower end of the door leaf, with open door it is not visible. Structurally, it is a U-shaped aluminum profile, equipped with a spring mechanism with a rubber seal;

Important! The guillotine insert is carried out to a depth of at least 20 mm, and therefore, it is not advisable to install it in cheap hollow doors with a small beam thickness.

  • Its design functions as follows: from the side of the hinges, a metal strip is attached to the door, equipped with a button that is pressed when the door is closed. In this case, the spring mechanism is activated, which contributes to the lowering rubber seal to floor level;
  • The operational life of the guillotine threshold exceeds 25 years;
  • The disadvantage of the design is the need for additional carpentry work to cut the threshold into the door leaf.

Interior thresholds are functional design, the main purpose of which is to hide the junction between floor coverings of different material or floor levels that differ in height. They are needed to ennoble the interior of the room and make a person's life comfortable.

Advantages and disadvantages

Door sills offer the following benefits:

  • protection of the premises from the penetration of drafts, dust or smoke;
  • protection against water overflow during moderate flooding in the bathroom;
  • soundproofing (for this purpose it is better to use a threshold box with a rubber seal).

It is important to pay attention to the disadvantages of door sills, because in the case of laminate or linoleum, they rarely look harmonious. In addition, young children often trip over them, which can injure themselves.

Choice of thresholds for doors

By design features thresholds are divided into flexible, T-shaped, overhead or flat, with an open or hidden type of fastening.

Modern manufacturers offer the following types door threshold structures depending on the material:

  1. Made of stone (considered durable and expensive, but problematic when installed in an already installed door frame).
  2. From wood (considered popular, running, most often made from oak or pine).
  3. Made of plastic (differ in aesthetic appeal with an average level of wear resistance).
  4. From metal (used for the purpose of floor joints, they are considered durable. They are stainless, brass or aluminum (the most popular option). Metal thresholds for the floor are divided into angular, single-level and multi-level, which should be paid attention to.

Thresholds for floors with different levels

Multi-level sills are designed for joints with pronounced floor differences under the door, allow the floor covering to look aesthetically attractive and harmonious.

Such a metal threshold reliably protects the floor surface from moisture penetration, hides some visual defects, prolongs the life of coatings, protecting the edges from damage.

This type has concealed fasteners and holes for easy installation. They are designed for joints. different thickness are available in rich colors.

Antithresholds (smart, guillotines)

AT recent times gaining popularity antithresholds. Traditionally, they are usually placed at the bottom of the door, but sometimes they can be mounted at the top of the opening.

Such designs are called guillotines or smart inter-door sills. They are necessary to seal the door, improve the heat and sound insulation of the room, protect against burning, smoke, dust or drafts. Considered durable, aesthetically pleasing, versatile (suitable for different models doors).

A smart threshold for interior doors is invisible during operation. It is an aluminum profile door hinge trigger mechanism with a movable seal. Automatic threshold for interior doors works according to following principle: when closing, the door presses the button, as a result of which the gap is blocked by the seal. When the door leaf is opened, the directional button freezes in the lowered state and does not interfere with the process.

Automatic threshold - "guillotine" looks like a P-and a spring. This design will fit a door made of any materials.

Door sills for toilet and bathroom

Installation of threshold structures is advisable in the case of a bathroom and toilet, because in case of an accident with water supply, sewerage or washing machine they protect the room from the penetration of water into it.

The threshold in the toilet is set independently according to the same principle as in the bathroom. To achieve this goal, it is important to stock up on a tape measure, pencil, grinder, puncher, screwdriver and self-tapping screws.

Installation steps

Algorithm self-assembly as follows:

  1. Detailed study of the factory instructions.
  2. Measurement of the length of the joint to be covered.
  3. Basting and trimming excess nut with a grinder (fitting to the desired size).
  4. If thresholds are installed with open fasteners, then self-tapping screws are screwed into ready-made holes. To simplify the process, the places of future fasteners are marked on the floor, holes are drilled. After that, the threshold in the bathroom is superimposed on top and tightly fixed.
  5. When mounting thresholds with a closed fastening, the lower bar is screwed into the floor with self-tapping screws, and a decorative profile is glued or snapped on top.
  6. When overlapping joints with different levels floors use a wide threshold, which is fixed with self-tapping screws at an angle, or a special multi-level (transitional) profile.
  7. If a joint with a tiled floor is planned, then use thresholds designed specifically for this purpose. Guillotine thresholds are also suitable for the bathroom and toilet.

The cost of products and work

If it is planned to entrust the installation of thresholds to carpenters, then it is important to take into account that the current cost of a running set of threshold-guillotine made of aluminum or wood, taking into account the possibility of cutting the profile up to required size, is about 700-3 thousand rubles. The price of products varies depending on the manufacturer, as well as the material of manufacture. Costs can be considered one-time, because at a normal level of operation, thresholds can last up to 20 years.

On average, the installation of thresholds costs about 200-300 rubles, the installation of an additional sealant will cost the same price. If there is a need for trimming the door leaf, then the price increases, but it is better to discuss all these nuances directly with the master.

Thresholds for interior doors are not only aesthetic appeal space, it is also a practical necessity!

Now you know everything about thresholds for interior doors. Ask questions to experts.

Thresholds for the floor are finishing materials designed to hide the compensating seam or joint of various floor coverings, fixing these coverings, as well as to perform decorative functions. Thresholds have an aesthetic appearance, have high strength, durability and wear resistance.

Kinds

Like any other building finishing material, the threshold-joint has many varieties, which are classified according to different principles, the most important of which is the material:

  • Metal thresholds - aluminum, brass, anodized. Today it is the most popular type of thresholds, characterized by a variety of configurations. Among them, aluminum threshold-joint is the most common, because this material is lightweight and durable, does not corrode and can be given any shape. Anodized parts are the same aluminum floor thresholds, only with a thin coating of a metallic color that imitates gold, silver or bronze. Brass thresholds are different golden color, so they go very well with wood flooring.
  • Plastic - basically, these thresholds are used in rooms with high humidity, such as in the bathroom or in the kitchen. These thresholds are significantly inferior to metal thresholds in terms of durability, but they are also reliable. A special kind of such thresholds is flexible plastic edging. With it, you can create a curved space and an original interior.
  • Wooden thresholds are the least popular type of thresholds, because they are the most expensive, but at the same time they are short-lived and are only suitable for wood flooring. As a rule, they are used in country houses.

When do thresholds apply?

At the front door, between rooms, a corridor, a bathroom, a kitchen, the installation of thresholds is essential. Optionally, anti-slip profiles can be laid on smooth stairs. Sometimes residents want to do without thresholds in adjacent rooms, but in this case, the load on the coating will increase due to pressure drops and humidity, so its service life may be reduced.

Types of materials and their purpose

It is very important to choose the right texture and color for the floor covering, not only the aesthetics of the situation, but also the wear of the product will depend on this. For joining two coatings different colors and textures, you need to take profiles that are most suitable for one of them. Or you need to select textures for doors and openings.

Modern interior sills are produced from the following materials:

  • Metal new trend, comes in matte, shiny, silver, gold and is often matched in color to door handles, but it can be of any color and be in harmony with other interior details;
  • Wood suitable for any coating, but requires care - painting or varnishing;
  • Cork elastic, can bend, used where it is necessary to provide a drop;
  • Plastic most a budget option, It has huge selection colors, but short-lived - can burst if heavy objects are dropped on it;
  • Laminate- it is combined exclusively with similar material, in conditions high humidity may gradually change shape.

By the way, moisture resistance- one of the main specifications that interior thresholds should have, the installation of materials with this quality is especially important when moving from tiles to laminate. Because usually tiles are laid in the bathroom and in the kitchen, where water can often get on the floor.

Features of installing interroom thresholds

  1. The length of the product is measured and cut in place.
  2. The fastening line should be in the middle of the doorway, and the threshold itself should be wide enough so that when the room is closed, in a lying or sitting position, one cannot see the adjacent coating.
  3. With a small difference - 5-7 mm, it is permissible to use ordinary docking profiles.
  4. The wider the gap, the correspondingly wider the threshold should be.

Mounting types

Modern installation of the threshold of an interior door is carried out using a drill and screws. That's just their hats can be visible or hidden, which is why there are two mounting methods: outer or interior. The first method is more thorough, the second is more aesthetic. Preference depends on the needs of the owners of the apartment.

Do-it-yourself installation of interior thresholds

Method 1

Consider first open way . It is very simple. For him, you need to purchase profiles with ready-made holes, so as not to scratch or damage the product by accident, trying to make holes yourself. Installation is simple and fast:

  1. First you need to measure and cut the segment of the desired length;
  2. Attach it to the opening and mark the places for drilling;
  3. Carefully drill the coating and screed;
  4. Fix the nut with screws.

At this stage, the installation of thresholds for the interior door is completed. It is very important to make the holes in the floor not too wide so that the structure does not loosen in the future. So that the bolts do not stand out too much against the background of the product, you can look for self-tapping screws with decorative caps.

Method 2

Now let's look at how to set the thresholds with your own hands in a closed way. For this are used:

  • slats, which have internal floating holes for screw heads,
  • profile, consisting of two parts: a rail and a T-shaped nut.

In the first case, after the profile is measured and cut, holes are drilled in the floor, then, after removing the debris, plastic dowels are inserted into them. FROM inside screws are threaded onto the bar by the number of screws. Then you need to very carefully turn the bar over and get the screws into the dowels.

After that, it is necessary to press on the threshold so that it is fixed, and tap on it with a hammer through a bar or a layer of newspapers. This is done so as not to scratch the surface.
The second way is more convenient and reliable. For him, you first need to leave a place - do not cover the floor with laminate at least on one side.

Further, in the allotted area, holes in the floor are also drilled and dowels are installed. A rail is placed on top and screwed to the floor. In conclusion, it remains to score a T-shaped profile and close the area with a laminate.
