It is hard to imagine that even 20-30 years ago, in order to find an answer to any question, you had to go to the library, take books on a topic that interests you and look for the desired materials there. Nowadays, it is enough just to ask the appropriate query to the search engine and get a huge amount of information on the issue that interests you.

Now there is no problem of lack of information, but there is a problem of its overabundance, in which a person is lost. In the modern information space, you need to be able to navigate in order to make this space useful for yourself. One of the most useful skills is the ability to quickly, and most importantly, usefully perceive the information that we see in our laptops, e-books, iPhone, iPad and all other sources of information, including newspapers and books.

The ability to quickly read an article, book, textbook, as well as understand and assimilate the material will allow you to become more effective, more successful than you were before. And most importantly, it will save your time, which becomes one of the most important resources. This section contains useful materials on how to master the technique of speed reading with a high level of effective perception of information.

Today by taking the time to master speed reading techniques, tomorrow you will be able to receive and process more information, while remaining the master of your saved time.

What is shorthand?

speed reading (or fast reading) is the ability to quickly perceive textual information when using special reading methods. Fast reading is 3-4 times faster than regular reading. (Wikipedia).

One of the most popular speed reading schools in Russia, Oleg Andreev's school, says that after completing 2 levels of training, you can achieve a reading speed of 10,000 characters per minute, which is approximately 5-7 pages of an average book.

It turns out that you can read 150-200 pages of a book in a half-hour trip on the subway at that speed. This is far more than the average person will read in that amount of time.

In addition to the "School of Oleg Andreev", such well-known specialists in speed reading as Natalia Grace, Andrey Spodin, Vladimir and Ekaterina Vasiliev and many others offer their courses. However, some people have learned to read quickly without attending courses, schools, trainings and special centers, and without reading speed reading textbooks - you even know many of them, these are Maxim Gorky, Vladimir Lenin, Thomas Edison and many others. Therefore, try to learn it yourself first, especially since it will cost you nothing.

And how fast do you read?

We suggest you check how fast you read. To do this, read the text in the exercise below and answer a few questions on its assimilation.

Course description

This course is designed to master the skill of speed reading. This speed reading skill is most useful for studying Internet resources, informational articles, reading newspapers, magazines, popular science literature, and textbooks. Fast reading will allow you not only to read texts faster, but also to master information better - find it and remember it in order of priority.

This training involves daily classes at home or at work for 20-40 minutes (you can do it less often, but then the effect will be less). The course consists of 5 stages, each of which involves the development of certain skills that help to read quickly. To master the skill, it is important to practice more - read articles on resources of interest to you (for example, sections you like on Wikipedia), read newspapers, magazines, textbooks - devote at least half an hour a day extra to this.

With this mode of study, you will get results in a couple of weeks, and if you study for 2-3 months, you can significantly increase the speed and quality of reading.

How to learn to read quickly?

To learn how to read fast on this site, just follow the exercises described in 5 lessons. If you try to generalize the various techniques for teaching speed reading, then the process of mastering this skill can be divided into 5 parts (these are 5 lessons). Each lesson allows you to master a specific skill that helps to increase your speed of reading and the effectiveness of mastering the material. The content of the lessons is built in such a way that it is possible to study online as interactively and conveniently as possible without teachers and tutors.

To get started, look at all the lessons, try to complete the exercises, if some skill is given to you quickly, then do not stop for a long time in this lesson. For example, many people do not have attention problems when reading and are able to skip to Lesson 2. Pay more attention to those lessons and exercises that:

  1. seem useful to you
  2. cause you trouble.

It is not necessary to go through the exercises in the sequence indicated in the lessons, the main thing is to achieve the goal for each part.

5 Speed Reading Lessons

5 skills useful for speed reading, which you can learn on our website:

1. Focus(LESSON 1)
You have probably noticed that an interesting book is read in one breath and faster than a boring textbook. Also, for example, when reading an interesting book, you gradually accelerate, plunging into the process of reading ... Attention for speed reading is very important, and most importantly, it can be trained.

2. Suppression of articulation (pronunciation of the text)(LESSON 2)
Most people have a habit of reading text by saying it to themselves. If you want to read the text quickly, you need to do it "silently", that is, by saving yourself from articulation.

3. Improving visual skills(LESSON 3)
The ability to see all the text at once in a paragraph or even on a page, understand its structure, read not from left to right, but from top to bottom (or, as they say, “diagonally”) is an important skill for fast reading. Therefore, visual skills also need to be trained, and in life they can be useful when driving a car, playing sports, etc. The lesson contains special tables and a simulator for training speed reading.

4. Fast reading and information management(LESSON 4)
It's no secret that most texts have only a small amount of useful information that you must learn to quickly find. This skill comes most often with the experience of reading, but you can speed up this process with the help of special exercises.

5. Speed reading and memory development(LESSON 5)
When you learn to read quickly, you will be able to master a fairly large amount of information. But the skill of speed reading can be useless if what is read is forgotten, which in principle is not strange, with such a volume of information. This information must be memorized.

In addition, the site provides additional materials for speed reading: books and textbooks, videos, simulators and programs, downloads, as well as articles with comments and reviews from social networks.

Whether you're reading a textbook for a philosophy seminar or the morning paper, reading can be tedious. Master the technique of speed reading to complete this task much faster. Speed reading will impair understanding of the material, but with proper practice, you can partially overcome this defect.

Steps

Part 1

Learn to read faster

    Stop saying words to yourself. Almost every reader mentally pronounces the text (subvocalization) or is distracted by repeating the word. This helps the reader remember the terms, but it also slows down the reading speed. Here are a few ways to minimize this habit:

    Close the words you have already read. When reading, your eyes often return to the words you have already read. Basically, these are short-term movements that do not improve understanding in any way. Use a bookmark to close words after reading them, weaning yourself from this habit.

    • These "reverse jumps" also occur when you fail to understand the material. If your eyes jump back a few words or lines, this is a sign that you need to slow down.
  1. Let's move on to eye movement. While reading, your eyes move in jerks, stopping at certain words and skipping others. Reading only happens when your eyes stop. If you reduce the number of movements per line of text, you will learn to read much faster. But be careful - there have been studies that have found the limit of what the reader is able to see at a time:

    • You can read eight letters to the right of your eye position, but only four to the left. It's about two or three words at a time.
    • You notice letters 9-15 spaces to the right, but are unable to read them.
    • Ordinary readers cannot read the words on the other lines. Learning to skip lines and still understand the material is extremely difficult.
  2. Reduce the amount of movement your eyes make. Normally, your brain decides where to move your eyes based on how long or familiar the next word is. You will be able to read faster if you instead train your eyes to jump to specific places on the page. Try the following exercise:

    • Take a bookmark and place it above a line of text.
    • Draw an "X" on the tab above the first word.
    • Draw another X on the same line. Put it three words further for good understanding, five words for simple texts, and seven words to skim key points.
    • Continue drawing "X" signs at the same interval until you reach the end of the line.
    • Try to read the line as soon as possible, dropping the bookmark down and concentrating only on the text under each "X".
  3. Read faster than you can understand the text. Many programs are built on the principle of increasing the speed of reading with the help of reflexes, so that the brain gradually learns to adjust to the new pace. This method has not been thoroughly studied. Your speed of moving through the text will undoubtedly increase, but you will understand little or nothing at all. Try this method if you're aiming for maximum reading speed and hope that a few days of practice will help you understand the material better. Here's how to do it:

    • Follow the text in pencil. Come up with a phrase that will take exactly one line of text to pronounce at a calm pace.
    • Try reading at the speed of a pencil for two minutes. Even if you don't understand anything, concentrate on the text and keep your eyes open for a full two minutes.
    • Rest for a minute and then speed up. Now try to read for three minutes, but now the pencil should cross two lines while you pronounce the phrase.
  4. Use programs for speed reading. If the above methods did not help you achieve your goal, try a quick sequential visual presentation. With this technique, a phone application or computer program displays text one word at a time. This allows you to choose any reading speed. But do not raise the speed too high, otherwise you will not be able to remember most of the words. This method is useful for quickly skimming through the news, but not while studying or reading for pleasure.

    Part 2

    Quick text view
    1. Know when a quick look is worth it. This way of reading can be used for a general familiarization with the text without a deep understanding of it. You can quickly skim through the newspaper to find an interesting article, or identify key points by skimming through a textbook before a test. A quick look is not a substitute for a full read.

      Read the section titles and headings. Read only chapter titles and all subheadings at the beginning of large sections. Read the titles of all news articles or magazine content.

      Read the beginning and end of the section. All paragraphs in textbooks usually contain an introduction and a conclusion. For other types of text, read the first and last paragraph of the chapter or article.

      • Read faster if you're familiar with the topic, but don't try to outrun yourself. You will save yourself time by scrolling through the extra text, but it is still important to understand the meaning of what you read.
    2. Circle important words in the text. If you want to learn more, then instead of reading normally, quickly go over the text with your eyes. Now that you've got the gist of the section, you'll be able to highlight keywords and mark important areas. Stop and highlight the following words:

Conditions for learning the technique of speed reading:

1. Every week to master the lesson of speed reading technique.
2. Allocate 30-40 minutes daily for special tasks.
Before starting classes, an autogenic training session should be held.

Why do we not read as fast?

The five main disadvantages of traditional reading methods are:
1. Regressions
Returning eye movements in order to re-read what has already been read. One of the most common deficiencies.
2. Lack of flexible reading program
Most readers read equally slowly as texts that deserve such attention and texts that require and allow such speed.
3 Articulation
involuntary movements of the tongue, lips, elements of the larynx when reading the text to oneself. Whispering, mumbling is the main enemy of fast reading.
4 Small field of view
This is a section of the text that is perceived by the eyes at the moments of stops or fixations that you have time to see when your eyes linger on the text.
5 Lack of attention when reading

Speed Reading Rules

1. Read without regressions
Text of any difficulty to read only once. Returning eye movements (regressions) are not allowed. Only at the end of reading and comprehension of what has been read, you can read the text again, if necessary.
2. All texts are built in a single logical sequence. No matter how difficult the text, regression is unacceptable
You can return to the text after reading and understanding, at least after 3 minutes. If during this time you do not remember what you read, you can go back to read it again.

Integral Reading Algorithm

IACH consists of seven blocks:

A critical attitude / disagreement with something increases the perception of the text, contributes to a deeper understanding and memorization. Keep this in mind, so always highlight features and critical places.

After reading, you should stop and imagine the text in these seven blocks and check the filling of its cells.

Modern linguistics claims that all texts have a redundancy of 75 percent or more. There is a lot of "water" in the texts and this is a natural phenomenon, because texts that do not have redundancy become "dry", incomprehensible. How to find "seeds of meaning" in all the abundance of text? When using the integral reading algorithm, you will look for answers to the questions posed in the blocks of the integral reading algorithm. Spend the energy of thought only on processing the content of the text.

The visual image of the integral algorithm should always be in your imagination, in your mind.

When you have finished reading, sit, think, close your eyes, imagine a drawing of an integral algorithm and you will be surprised to find that everything from the text is in the corresponding parts of the drawing.

With the help of multiple repetitions, a new program of action is fixed. Time will pass and you will forget about the drawing, but a more effective program of mental actions will remain.

Break the text into blocks of interval reading and you will see only the text that has the main semantic load.

Differential Reading Algorithm

  1. Find the reading algorithm
  2. Form the main semantic points
  3. Analyze all this, draw a conclusion about "what is the content of its main semantic part" - the dominant.

The semantic triangle shows the process of understanding the text

Information (information, events, facts)
Meaning - the thought contained in the words

Are there texts that do not contain information - as a rule, no.

Are there any texts that do not contain meaning - even as they are!

Most people who read texts perceive information as a rule, only a few comprehend the meaning of the text.

Two reading programs

Keywords are words that carry the main semantic load.

The semantic strong point is the point of understanding, the point of decoding. It includes a group of keywords and is a concise expression of content - sentences or paragraphs.

Dominant / meaning - the main semantic part of the text. She expresses herself in her own words in the language of her own thoughts.

Rules for performing an exercise with percussion rhythm

  1. Rhythm is tapped out with a pencil held in three fingers of the right hand on the hard surface of the table with blows to one point, firmly, confidently, clearly.
  2. The rhythm is tapped out by the active movement of the whole arm, and not just the hand, the elbow should not lie on the table. For active influence on Broca's area, active amplitude movements of your hand are needed.
  3. When tapping out the rhythm while simultaneously reading the text to oneself, it is necessary to ensure the continuity and correctness of the rhythm pattern.
  4. The left-hander should tap with both hands.

This rhythm should be performed for 20 hours.

You need to sit at the table.

For fast reading, you need to have well-developed peripheral vision. You can train it with the Schulte table. It solves the problem of vertical eye movement.

The point is that you probably won't be able to both tap and speak out loud at the same time. But it remains possible to read to yourself, tapping out the rhythm. Such a reading will always be a reading with no articulation.

Formed non-verbal figurative thinking. After 10 o'clock, you should tap the rhythm with both hands (including left-handers).

Four phases of mastering the rhythm percussion exercise

  1. Reading + tapping. Either reading or knocking is not obtained;
  2. Reading + tapping. It turns out, but there is no understanding;
  3. Reading + knocking + understanding. It turns out that there is no memorization;
  4. Reading + knocking + understanding. It turns out. There is a memory, the knock does not interfere.

Two ways of processing information

The rule for working with the Schulte table

Schulte tables give a very big effect if and only if you follow all the rules for working with the table.

Work daily with Schulte tables.

Work with a new table each time.

  1. Fix your gaze in the center of the table. You need to see the entire table;
  2. Sequentially find all the numbers without missing anything. (Remember, the gaze must be kept in the central zone of the table. Horizontal eye movements are prohibited!);
  3. The found figure is fixed only with a glance, without pronunciation.

Gradually, the time of working with the table should decrease.

It may happen that the next figure is absolutely not visible, in this case chaotic eye movements are prohibited, but you can allow yourself only vertical scanning eye movements. Scan the first column, second, third, etc.

Special exercises for the eyes

  1. Close and open your eyes tightly. Repeat 5-6 times with an interval of 30 seconds.
  2. Look up, down, right, left without turning your head.
  3. Roll your eyes in a circle: down, right, up, left and in the opposite direction.

"Assault Method"

Reading algorithm according to the "assault method":

  1. See the whole page at once;
  2. Find an informative block;
  3. Read it.

Exercise "60+15"

An excellent method for reading a huge amount of literature.

Reading algorithm:

  1. Contemplate a book page for 60 sec. Any eye movements other than horizontal are allowed;
  2. In the process of contemplation, find an informative block;
  3. For 15 sec. read the found informative block.

Attention while reading

"Attention is a mental act of control. Attention takes the form of the object one is looking at." (P.Ya.Galperin)
Fast reading requires increased attention.

The main psychophysiological properties of attention are explained by two laws:

  1. Law of induction of nervous processes (Pavlov);
  2. Dominant principle (Ukhtomsky).

Psychologists distinguish three types of attention:

  1. Involuntary - arises by itself;
  2. Arbitrary - the result of an effort of will;
  3. Poslevolnoe - does not require constant strong-willed efforts.
Fast reading is possible in the mode of voluntary or post-voluntary attention.

Attention properties:

  • Volume;
  • Distribution;
  • Concentration;
  • sustainability;
  • Switching

Exercises for training attention (the effect is possible after three months)

The effectiveness of these exercises is very high if they are performed for a long time.

"Memory is not a coin thrown on the table, but a constantly burning candle"

1. Contemplation of the green dot

2. Fasten the fingers into the lock, take the thumbs away and make rotational movements with the thumbs of the left and right hands - simultaneously around each other. You have to watch the movements of the fingers, not to think about anything, not to look at the fingers.
For the first 15 days, do this exercise daily for 5 minutes.
Second 15 days - 10 minutes

One of the most important human needs is the need for new knowledge and self-improvement. Therefore, people learn foreign languages, go in for sports, master musical instruments. At the heart of the development of each skill is the acquisition of information. How fast a person reads determines the speed at which he learns something new.

Speed reading is an incredibly useful skill that does not require special talents to master. If you have the desire, perseverance and a little time, you can easily master speed reading at home.

Why Read Fast

Who will benefit from the development of speed reading? The answer to this question is extremely simple. Anyone who seeks to learn new things, this skill will be useful. By learning how to learn speed reading and spending a few months practicing it, you can save a huge amount of time later on.

In turn, slow reading is not always justified. Most people do not read books to the end precisely because of the time consuming. Also, when reading slowly, there are high chances of losing interest in the plot and, again, abandoning the book without finishing it.

For some specialists, reading thematic literature is part of their job responsibilities, giving them the opportunity to grow, develop and become an expert in their field. For these people, mastering the technique of speed reading is a professional necessity.

What is shorthand

Let's define what speed reading is and at what speed you need to read.

The standard speed of perception is 150-250 words per minute. At the same time, 1-3 minutes are spent on a page of printed text. Speed reading means mastering the skill of reading from 500 to 3000 words at the same time. True, in this case, the term "read" is not entirely appropriate. Speed reading in essence is the analysis of the text and the choice of the main thing. That is, some of the information is simply ignored. The goal is to learn to focus on those sentences and phrases that carry the maximum meaning, and skip the "water" that does not affect the understanding of the essence.

The secret of great people

Surprisingly, the speed reading technique appeared in the Middle Ages and was familiar to many famous people.

For example, Joseph Stalin was the owner of a huge library. Reading was a daily activity for him. He read five hundred pages of text at a time, while he liked to highlight the main ideas with pencils.

The American president was proud of his speed reading skills. It was not a problem for him to read an entire book at once.

Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin read very quickly. In addition, we know about his Biography, he could reproduce almost verbatim by heart with all significant dates.

The speed reading technique was also owned by Karl Marx, Napoleon Bonaparte, John F. Kennedy, Adolf Hitler. Maybe that's what made them successful in their field.

When is the speed reading method useful?

If we talk about speed reading, then you need to consider one more thing. This method is mainly used for reading scientific and technical literature, reports, Internet articles, news reports in newspapers, that is, the material that brings new knowledge.

Poems and fiction are meant for very different purposes. In fiction, we are not looking for answers to the questions posed, but simply enjoy the process of reading. The whole value of literary texts lies in their impact on the emotions, feelings of a person and the use of his imagination. It is possible to read such literature quickly, but it is absolutely meaningless.

Is it possible to learn speed reading at home

Nowadays, there are many specialized courses that "for little money" promise to teach everyone to read at a speed of up to 3000 words per minute. Training sessions last from a month to three. But is it worth spending time and money on attending such courses if you can develop speed reading at home without any investment? Such self-study even has its advantages:

  • The free choice of time for classes makes it possible to conduct training at those hours when it will be most convenient and fruitful.
  • Speed reading teaching methods and exercise descriptions are public information that can be found in special manuals sold in any bookstore.
  • No distractions.
  • Possibility, choosing the duration of classes, to control the time of training.

Someone may be interested in the opinion of people who took courses to master speed reading. Feedback on their effectiveness is not always positive. Often, in order to achieve noticeable results, additional independent practice is required at the end. But the very skill of speed reading speaks only with praise. None of those who have mastered this ability regretted the time and effort spent.

Learning to read quickly. What is needed for that?

To master speed reading at home, you need to familiarize yourself with the basic principles of this skill.

The first rule is not to "jump" while reading. You need to look through the text from beginning to end, without stopping and not rereading incomprehensible fragments. You will see, when you read to the end of a paragraph or page, everything that was unclear will become clear without rereading.

The second rule is to highlight a few key words in each of the sentences. It is not necessary to read the entire sentence or paragraph from beginning to end, it is important to catch and remember only the key words.

The third rule is not to be distracted. Speed reading will not give any results if you do not concentrate on what you are reading. The reader must be completely immersed in the process, because it is important not only to read, but also to fix useful information in memory.

Why do we read slowly?

Anyone who is wondering how to develop speed reading will be useful to know what prevents us from reading quickly.

1. Reading indiscriminately. When we read, we pay attention to everything. To get acquainted with the main idea, we spend as much time as reading lyrical digressions that do not carry any semantic load and do not contain useful information. As already mentioned, to save time, the speed reading technique involves determining the main idea and ignoring the “water” in the text.

2. Repetition of what has been read. Each of us has a bad habit from childhood - to look back at the sentence we have just read. When a child is developing vocabulary, such repetitions are useful. But as adults, we do it just out of habit.

3. Reading to yourself. When reading aloud, we can do it faster or slower, depending on the pace of reading and diction. When we read to ourselves, our brain, as it were, conducts a monologue, "pronouncing" the information that we are getting acquainted with. The speed of perception of the text cannot be higher than the speed of this internal monologue. Therefore, if you decide to master the speed reading method, the first thing you need to do is "muffle the internal speaker" and learn to perceive information without saying it to yourself.

4. Field of view. A narrow field of view can significantly slow down the reading process. If a person has a well-developed peripheral vision, he uses it when perceiving the text, which is displayed at the speed of reading. For those who wish to master speed reading on their own, exercises to expand the field of vision are a must.

5. Inattention can be a problem at any speed. The inability to concentrate on the process of reading is the main reason that information is not remembered, no matter how fast you read. The speed reading technique implies the parallel development of the ability to abstract from external stimuli and focus on the text.

Exercises to Increase Reading Speed

How to start learning shorthand? Exercise is the key to success. Regular performance of simple practical tasks contributes to the development of qualities necessary for the rapid assimilation of information.

Eliminate inner speech

It was previously mentioned that internal articulation is one of the main causes of low articulation. There are methods to combat it:

  • Count to yourself from ten to one. Try to understand any text without losing count.
  • Do the same, but instead of counting, hum a song that you know by heart.
  • Tap out any rhythm while reading.

The principle of such an exercise is to “occupy your inner speaker” and learn to perceive the text without his participation.

Developing peripheral vision

If peripheral vision is developed at the proper level, a person may not waste time moving his eyes one line from left to right, but cover it with his eyes right away. This way of reading is called vertical. Moreover, by developing peripheral vision, you can read entire paragraphs or blocks of text at a glance.

At this stage, they will come to the rescue. A square is depicted on the sheet, the length of the sides of which is 20 cm. It is divided into five horizontal lines and five vertical lines. Thus, we get 25 cells, each of which contains numbers from 1 to 25 in random order. The finished square is placed at eye level (distance 25-30 cm).

The exercise itself consists in concentrating only on the middle square, using peripheral vision, to find the location of all the numbers from 1 to 25, and then in reverse order.

Another exercise that helps achieve the same goal is called the "Triangle". You need to select the text and type it in such a way that each line is wider than the previous one. For example, the first line has one word, the second has two, the third has three, and so on. As a result, we get a triangle consisting of text. When reading it, move your eyes only from top to bottom. Use peripheral vision to see the beginning and end of long lines.

Similar exercises can be performed in everyday life, without devoting special time for classes. For example, while sitting at work, concentrate your eyes on some object and try to see what is happening around you. This will be both an exercise to relieve tension from the eyes, and an effective method to effortlessly develop peripheral vision.

Learning to guess

Speed reading means selective perception of the text. In order for you to get holistic useful information in the end, you need to learn logic and conjecture.

An assistant is needed to complete the exercises in this block. Immediately you need to select unfamiliar text and print it. The assistant darkens some parts of the text with a black marker, and you, while reading it, are trying to catch the meaning. First, you can choose simple texts to read. But over time, in order to train the skill, it is better to opt for unfamiliar topics and completely new terminology. The amount of hidden text should also gradually increase.

You can take a book and close a part of the text with a vertical strip 5 cm wide, and then read the rest. Make the strip wider over time.

It is worth devoting one hour to this practice 3-4 times a week, and in a month speed reading will begin to develop. Exercises for everyone, although at the very beginning they may seem difficult.

At what age can you teach speed reading to children

The vocabulary of a child is much smaller than that of an adult. When reading, he thinks, comprehends the material read and spends much more time for this. Even by ear, fast speech is perceived much worse by children. Therefore, it is possible to teach children speed reading only after they learn to fully comprehend the text they read on their own. This occurs at the age of approximately 14-15 years.

As you can see, developing speed reading at home is not such a difficult task. Not only superheroes, but also ordinary people can read at a speed of more than 500 words per minute. Try it and you will learn this and by your own example you will see the value of such a skill.

All children read slowly. Reading speed depends on the child's vocabulary and how much time he devotes to learning. If your child reads too slowly, gets low marks in reading, and teachers ask you to study with your child, then it's time to learn speed reading at home. Of course, you can use the services of private teachers who will take care of your child for a “very modest amount”, but is it worth paying if there is an opportunity to study on your own? This has another plus: you will be able to spend more time with your son or daughter.

What is shorthand?

If the child began to lag behind in school in many subjects and he does not have enough time allotted for the lesson to familiarize himself with the information provided in the textbook, it will be just fine to teach him speed reading. Of course, he will not become a genius who can read all the sheets completely in the time when classmates read only the first page. Speed reading implies the selection of only the main thing and the complete rejection of unnecessary information, that is, that verbal garbage that does not affect the essence of what is being presented.

At what age can a child be taught to read?

There is no definite threshold here. The opinions of experts are divided, and someone believes that it is necessary to teach a child to speed read before the age of ten, while someone argues with this opinion, arguing that it is impossible to learn such a technique before the age of fourteen.

Speed reading at home for children should start from the age when the child can correctly comprehend the text, that is, not only can read, but also understands the essence. This age is different for everyone and largely depends on kindergarten teachers, primary school teachers and parents. So, to understand that your baby is ready to learn speed reading, you should focus on four basics:

  1. The ability not only to distinguish letters, but also to build syllables and words from them.
  2. Correct reading comprehension. That is, if a child reads about a turtle, but says that it is about a horse, then he is not ready, because he does not understand the meaning.
  3. The ability to choose only the main thing from the whole text.
  4. Can retell what has been read.

And in order for speed reading at home (we will describe exercises to master this skill) to bring a greater effect, it is worth starting from the activity of the child. If he is not diligent, then it is worth waiting a bit until the hyperactivity passes.

Mistakes made during training

How to learn speed reading at home without desire? There is only one answer, it is completely impossible, therefore, before starting the course, it is worth starting from the desire of the child. If he absolutely does not want to read (refers to preschool age), then you should not force him, as the desire to learn will completely disappear. So, if the child is determined to learn, then you can start.

The first thing every parent should remember is that the initial skills should not be spent a lot of time, and the initial exercises should not last more than fifteen minutes. After that, it is worth giving the child a rest for about an hour and continue on. Why? Just a small amount of material is absorbed quickly, and from a large amount, the child can remember absolutely nothing.

Teach your child not letters, but sounds, that is, say not "EM", but "M". Otherwise, the child will read instead of "mother" - "emaema".

Learn to immediately read in syllables, and not in letters, so the process will go faster. Stop all attempts by the baby to move his lips when reading to himself. Teachers assure that with such stirring, the child will comprehend the same word for too long.

Speed reading at home for children: exercises for the brain

Of course, you can choose the technique yourself, but you can also use the proven method that experts use. The main thing is to choose one training method, and not change it daily. So, we begin to learn speed reading at home, let's start an effective course with brain training.

Find a couple

To develop the speed of thinking, you can start this exercise from a very early age, the main thing is that the baby already knows the letters and knows how to work with syllables. You can buy, or you can draw cards on which syllables will be written on your own. Spread them on the table in a disorderly position and invite the child to make words that he can find. For example: "vo-yes", "pa-pa", "ba-ba". With each exercise, complicate the task by adding one syllable to the words.

The cards should have syllables of those words that the child has already seen, the main thing here is attention, memory.

Reading per minute

Take a book you haven't read yet and have your child read a few lines. Note the time yourself and mark with a pencil the place where he stopped after a minute. Then again ask to read the same passage, and the number of words this time will be more. Repeat the exercise every day.

Anagrams

Speed reading at home will become much more productive if you train your visual memory hard. Write the wrong sentence on a piece of paper and the corrected version on another. For example: "A frog was sitting on a green meadow" and "A frog was sitting on a green meadow." Ask the child to quickly read the first option, and then just as quickly - the second. You will be surprised, but the baby will read the second option as correctly as the first. This is visual memory.

You can do the same not with sentences, but with words, removing all vowels or several letters from the second option.

If the first time did not work out, ask them to find the mistakes made in the sentence or word, and continue training every day.

visual perception

Spend dictations with your child, but not those that we used to write at school, but visual ones. Take a book with large letters and a clean sheet. Close all sentences from the child except the first one, and give him a minute to study it. Then close the entire text, and let him write on the sheet what he read. Do the same with the following sentences.

Not with a whip, but with a stick

If your child cannot learn speed reading at home, the exercises are not given as they should, then in no case scold him. Try again and again, and be sure to praise for each success. The trainee should have only a good mood, a positive attitude and positive emotions. If you scold him, then he will be pinched internally, and, most likely, you will not have to wait for success, and the result will get worse.

Why does a child need speed reading?

Speed reading helps to quickly assimilate the material covered, eliminate all errors in reading. For example, if a child often "stammers", confuses letters and syllables, "swallows endings", then this technique will help get rid of these moments.

By increasing the speed of reading, the child will do more at school, learn to separate the main from the unnecessary in the material covered.

Speed reading is great for developing memory. This is very important when learning, because every day children are given a huge amount of information, and a developed memory will help to better assimilate information, which means that their grades will improve!

In addition to reading and the exercises provided above, the child should also practice speed speech. Prepare tongue twisters, proverbs and sayings for him. Speed reading at home will be more productive if the baby can speak quickly.

When reading, put the book on your lap, and while reading, run your finger along the line, the child should sit next to you and try to catch up with your movement. Move your finger a little faster each time.
