Preparation of material and tools

Layered weaving: a - scheme; b - general form; c - weaving closed loop; g - weaving with paired rods; d - weaving in three rods.

Basically all wicker furniture made from rattan or wicker. Rattan is a southern plant that grows in most Asian countries and not found in areas with temperate climate. Given this, it should be said that if it is necessary to make furniture with their own hands, Russian craftsmen will have to use willow branches.

Almost all varieties of willow are suitable for weaving. Harvesting branches, as a rule, is carried out in the cold season - from November to February. During these months, the trees sleep, the sap flow stops, which allows harvesting as much as possible. quality material. In order to make furniture from a vine, very thin and thicker shoots are cut. The main rule is that the rods should be even, long and unbranched.

After cutting the branches, they should be prepared for work. Today, wicker furniture can be made from both peeled and unpeeled vines. The second option is more artisanal and is suitable for items that will be long time be used outdoors. Furniture from peeled branches is usually made for home improvement, while it has a very decorative effect. appearance and a beautiful orange-yellow color.

In order to peel the vine, the branches must be boiled for 1.5-2 hours. It is advisable to use a large container in which you can place the vine without bending it. After cooking, the peel moves away from the wood very well, allowing you to prepare high-quality material for work.

Tools necessary for work: a drill and drills, an awl, pliers, a jigsaw, self-tapping screws and a screwdriver, a pencil, knives.

Rules for making a sofa

Today, rattan furniture is very popular with domestic consumers, and this is not surprising, because it has attractive appearance and convenient to operate. The same should be said about products made from vines. Correct technique weaving will decorate your Vacation home a small sofa made by own hands.

First of all, it is necessary to dry and sand well the sticks from which the frame will be made, and the branches.

The dimensions of the couch from the vine.

Then you need to consider the dimensions of the sofa and determine:

  • what will be the length and width of the seat;
  • how far from the floor will the seat be located;
  • how high will the back be?

Rattan or wicker furniture must have a frame, so when the material dries, you need to start making it. The frame for the sofa is made up of prepared sticks using self-tapping screws and a screwdriver.

The seat requires 4 sticks: 2 - 60 cm high, and 2 others - 40 cm each. These sticks are fastened together in the form of a rectangle. Then the base for the front legs of the sofa is prepared. You will need 3 sticks with your chosen seat height from the floor. Presumably, it will be equal to 40 cm. The sticks are attached to the seat frame at the corners and at an equal distance from each other along one of the long sides. In this case, this distance is 20 cm.

The length of the sticks for the rear legs depends entirely on the height of the back of the sofa. For example, the height of the back that wicker furniture will have is 25 cm. To do this, you need to cut 3 sticks 65 cm long. The rear legs are attached to the frame with self-tapping screws, similar to the front legs, while the ends of the rear legs are 25 cm high above the seat.

Then a frame for the back is made: a stick, equal in size to the length of the seat, is fixed at the ends of the rear legs. After that, it is necessary to give rigidity to the entire structure. This can be done by fastening together all the legs of the sofa with additional sticks of smaller thickness.

Products woven from a wicker can serve their owners for many years, performing not only a practical, but also a decorative function. As an interior item, they are successfully used both in the village and in the metropolis.

Weaving willow baskets for beginners (master class)

Let's start making the basket by preparing the willow vine. The vine is best cut in May, before the willow blooms. You can cut the vines in August, when new long shoots grow on the willow.

Preparation of vines from willow branches

We immediately remove the bark from the cut branches and leave our vine for five days in the shade in the open air.

After the vine is prepared and rested, we begin weaving willow baskets. The technology is as follows: we weave the bottom and edges of the product with round whole twigs, the walls - with a vine split into several parts.

How to split a vine

To split the vine into pieces, you will need a special hardwood cleaver. An incision is made at the end of the vine with a knife, a cleaver is inserted into it, and the vine is split into 2, 3 or 4 parts.

The split branches are soaked in water for several hours, and then the brown center is removed. For processing split vines, it is recommended to use a planer.

Before weaving from the vine, it must be moistened. This can be done with a spray gun or by lowering the branches for a few minutes in water.

Having prepared a sufficient amount of vines, we begin weaving willow baskets.

Carefully consider the process of creating a basket in the figure. First, the bottom of the basket is woven, then the ribs are added and the sides are woven along them. At the very end, a pen is made.

If you know the technology for making baskets from paper tubes, then you should know that willow weaving for beginners step by step is almost the same.

We perform the work in this order:

  1. To make the bottom of the basket, split five rods in the middle with a knife and insert five other rods into the holes. We insert the tips of the first two into the same holes.
  2. We make a braid of the bottom. The first rod must cover the split twigs from above, and the second to cover those that are threaded into the split twigs from below.
  3. Do the same for the third and fourth turns.
  4. We move apart the rods of the cross in the form of a fan and braid with two branches of willow.
  5. We press the twigs to each other with an awl.
  6. When the bottom reaches the size we need, we install the ribs of the basket in our willow weaving. For beginners, we will explain this process step by step. For the ribs we use round twigs. We cut their ends obliquely at a distance of about 5 cm. sharp ends insert into the braid of the bottom. We cut off the excess ends of the vine. The edges of the bottom are woven from four round twigs, which are inserted 4 cm near the side edges of the basket. To give the basket the necessary shape, we make a blank, as in Fig. 9. We nail the bottom of the basket to it with the help of small carnations.
  7. We finish braiding the bottom, cut off the extra twigs.
  8. We turn to weaving the sides. We cut the ends of the new twigs. We take twigs of medium thickness. We insert new branches along each twig of the base.
  9. We bend the new rods under the two adjacent ones to the left, down, and then up.
  10. We also bend the rest of the branches of the vine. The last two branches cannot be bent. We just wrap them around the first ones. Weave the sides of the basket until they reach the height we need.
  11. We begin to weave a pen. We take thick shoots of the vine, bend them and determine the length of the handle. We cut off the excess vine.
  12. We sharpen the ends of the vine and insert them into the walls of the basket. We insert five branches next to the handle, and wrap the handle with them. We hide the extra ends of the vine between the walls of the basket.
  13. We take a thin twig and wrap the edges of the handle with it. We hide the tips of the twig and cut off the excess.
  14. Weaving a willow basket with your own hands is completed. A simple round willow basket is ready.

Follow the steps shown in the pictures. A little practice and you'll be fine.

Conclusion

Having mastered the technique of weaving round baskets from a vine, you can then learn how to weave square and oval baskets and boxes, learn weaving a willow hedge for beginners step by step, then proceed to making wicker furniture and more complex products. The growth of your skills and craftsmanship depends only on the amount of your free time and the desire to engage in basket weaving. Willow weaving is an interesting and accessible activity for everyone.

Self-woven furniture, first of all, should provide you with safety and serve for a long time. When weaving furniture items it is necessary to monitor the quality connection of knots in this design, and at the same time give it rigidity and reliability. When weaving furniture used following connections: detachable and one-piece.

The first element is quite simple when assembling and disassembling furniture, but the number of individual connections is limited. This, as a rule, depends on the features of the furniture itself. Products with one-piece elements are made using glue and nails. These products are more durable and serve for more than a dozen years. Although there are disadvantages - there is no way to disassemble them, in case of necessary transportation.

Material preparation

The manufacture of wicker furniture is impossible to imagine without high-quality material. Therefore, for future wicker furniture, it is necessary to prepare the appropriate material. To be able to weave furniture yourself, you can use branches from variety of plants: hazel, bird cherry, raspberry, willow and even nettle. Need to pay Special attention to the fact that to start these works, it is better to use bird cherry, since this plant is quite malleable for weaving, and can also be easily cut into several ribbons. Bird cherry also perfectly retains its original luster and shade. In order to start harvesting rods, you should choose the time from mid-October until the onset of the first frost. You can also harvest the branches of this plant in the spring.

In order to make openwork furniture, twigs should be collected in early spring. One of the main differences in the quality of the collected material is their thin core. Twigs with a thicker core are usually suitable for assembling the frame of large products, as well as for making all kinds of arbors or braiding sun loungers. In addition, the choice of material can be carried out, focusing on the width of the leaves: if the leaf is narrow, then the branch will be more flexible, and the product will learn to be more openwork and beautiful.

There is a technique by which you can get a white rod - it should be boiled. To do this, you need to take a container with hot water and put it all in assembled blanks. Next, boil the rods for an hour. And to get lighter tones, they need to be boiled for at least 2-3 hours.

In order to receive dark shades, you need to boil the blanks for 4-5 hours. After carrying out this procedure, all the rods must be removed and immediately cleaned of the bark. This is necessary so that they do not lose their beautiful appearance. The removal of the bark occurs with the help of splitting. The furniture turns out to be very beautiful, thanks to the use of whole rods and glossy ribbons in weaving. To be able to make such rods, it is necessary to divide them into 3-4 parts with a knife or splitter. These parts make beautiful and thin ribbons.

The design features of the wicker chair include the following elements:

  • sidewalls;
  • backrest;
  • seat;
  • Legs;
  • Tsargi.

The armrests of the chair are additional element manufactured product. Willow sticks are used to make the chair. Their diameter should be approximately 29-30 mm. Thin rods are also used this plant(from 6 to 10 mm). In order to craft one item, you need to spend up to 30 long rods. Bends are made using a special tool - zhamka. With the help of it, all existing roughnesses of the rods are leveled. The process of making furniture begins, as a rule, with cutting out all the necessary details - rods and branches. For the manufacture of furniture that has a curved appearance, it is necessary to bend the shelves according to a certain pattern. The lounge chair consists of the following components:

  • backs;
  • Convenient and comfortable sitting;
  • armrests;
  • Lower bench.

The manufacturing technology of wicker furniture is divided into several stages. Therefore, making wicker furniture with your own hands can take you a lot of time.

So, first, a frame is made of thick rods, and the braid is produced in the areas where the elements of the object meet. This product has a very beautiful appearance, as well as high armrests. They, in turn, serve for comfort, as well as to increase the rigidity and durability of the chair.

The lower bench is load-bearing frames furniture. It is necessary primarily for the strength and reliability of the subject. The frame has:

  • legs,
  • covered leggings,
  • bearing cross,
  • support frames,
  • seats,
  • sub-rays.

The back of the chair is made from the upper parts of the rear legs and rods located in the upper part of the back.

The seat for the chair is made from branches that are dense and durable in composition. They are mounted, as a rule, on a perpendicularly located bar of the seat and on the bars of the frames (rear and front).

During the production of the frame, its legs are fixed to the frame of the seat and to the cross of the proleg.

The next step in the work is the process of fitting the proleg and installing the shooter.

The armrests are made using pre-processed elements - soaked and curved willow branches.

Then armrests are installed to the front of the seat frame, and butt ends are attached to the sides of the shooters.

The next stage of work is to fasten the upper ends of the armrest rods to the upper sections of the rods of the rear legs. After all the main rods are installed, installation is carried out decorative twigs armrests. They go around the back of the chair around the top. With the help of a willow tape, all the joints of the product are braided. Next, the twigs for the seat and back of the chair are mounted.

How to make a blank of rods for weaving?

Usually, the preparation of rods for weaving begins from October until winter, when frost sets in, and also in spring. These seasons are associated with wooden bars can be easily cleaned and stored dry for a very long time. Openwork weaving of chairs is associated with the use of thin rods, which are cut in the spring.

If the core of the twigs is thin, then this indicates the quality of the material for weaving. If the rods have a thick core, then they are used to make frames for wicker buildings, for example, gazebos. The width of the sheet may indicate the flexibility of the bars, the narrower the sheet, the greater the bending of the material, the product will come out more openwork.

The efficiency of products depends on the processing technology of the rod from which white rods are obtained.

The method is associated with the digestion of the material in large capacity where hot is poured boiled water. The rods should be lowered into the container and boiled for about an hour over high heat. To obtain light shades you can cook the rods for about two more hours, and dark color material is obtained by boiling it in the same water for 4 hours or more.

When the rods are already boiled, you can begin to peel off the bark from them. Otherwise future material will lose its aesthetic value.

To remove the bark, use a split or coarse gloves. The product will be most effective if you use glossy ribbons along with rods, cut from rod blanks, which are divided into 2 or 4 parts using a knife or a small cleaver.

How to create a chair with your own hands?

Additional braid of the base of the bottom: a-general view; b-braiding the racks of the bottom with willow ribbon (front side); in-fastening the ends of willow ribbons (non-front side).

The wicker designs of lounge chairs include several elements ranging from backrests to seats with armrests. You can make a frame from sticks of sufficient thickness. In this case, the braid is left in those places where the parts are articulated.

Decorative designs have certain features, since the functions of the armrests are associated with convenience. Comfortable rest in the chair will be provided. To make the seat comfortable, the frame is made by strengthening the legs to the proleg, that is, its cross.

After that, work should be done to fit the chair legs. Then the backrest is mounted in its upper part, the seat of the chair is made of rods running across. The shaping of the armrests of the chair can be done using pre-finished elements, which are soaked willow sticks that are curved.

In this way, original chairs are made from bars. For example, you can make your own hanging wicker chair. It will be combined with willow rods and synthetic rope.

In the weaving process you will need the following tools and materials:

  1. Secateurs.
  2. Glue.
  3. Ruler.
  4. Twine.
  5. Hoop made of metal-plastic (hula hoop).
  6. Willow rods.
  7. Synthetic rope.
  8. Rope for slings.

First, they are engaged in harvesting willow branches.

They are usually found near ponds or rivers. Well, when they are not too far from a country house or cottage. You can collect branches by cutting them first from trees. The diameter of the rods should be from 10 to 20 mm, they will need about 300-400 pieces. After preparing the material for weaving, they begin to work.

Wicker furniture is considered to be an exclusive piece of furniture, which at first sight surprises with its originality, reliability, pleases exquisite view and ease of use.

AT recent times a significant increase in its popularity has been noticed due to the enthusiasm of the owners of summer cottages, private houses, city apartments with large balconies or loggias for interior design using natural objects in ethnic style.

Features of the production of this type of furniture at home largely depend on the structural structure and type of each item.

So, for example, there are differences in the methods of weaving and the frames of products, which are combined, single, openwork, and so on. Already directly in the manufacturing process, you can combine different weaves, perform unusual patterns, or limit yourself to weaving one type.

Choosing materials

Wicker furniture can be made from any climbing plants with a flexible or dense base:

  • Willow raw material. It includes a willow, a vine, a willow, a willow tree, an osokor, a sheluga, a rakita. For the frame, rods older than three years are used, for the weaving itself - an annual vine. That is why, two types of raw materials are popular in production - flexible stems-rods and willow sticks.
  • The roots of fir, spruce, pine, cedar. Usually they are harvested at uprooting and logging sites.
  • Birch bark or birch bark. Used for weaving decorative pieces of furniture. The raw material is harvested in the spring and summer from freshly felled or felled trees. Such birch bark has a natural beautiful shade that goes well with cattail, vine and rattan.
  • Rattan or rattan shoots.
  • Bamboo- subtropical or tropical grass of the cereal family.
  • Linden bark. Used for decorating weaving and joining separate parts into a whole.

AT industrial production Today, willow raw materials and rattan are widely used.

For production full cycle independent preparation of rods is necessary, followed by drying and sanding.

You can also use ready-made raw materials processed to give the desired shape and size (flat, round, billet rods).

Weaving technology

There are some nuances of creating this type of furniture, which depend on the design of the product and the structure of the frame. Moreover, the technology is different and the method of weaving.

Of course, wicker furniture should, first of all, have the following main qualities - safety, reliability in use and durability.

At a high level there must be a quality of fastening elements, providing high level rigidity and strength. You can fix the parts together using detachable and one-piece connections.

The process of assembling the structure itself can be greatly facilitated by the presence of detachable connections. One-piece connections are attached with glue or nails. The latter method is used much more often due to its strength and reliability, but its significant drawback is the difficulty of transporting the product.

More about the technology in the video:

First of all, before you start sketching, soberly assess your capabilities. If up to this point you have never made wicker furniture and do not even have an idea how to do it, it is better to start with the most simple models.

Shouldn't be used expensive materials , in this case preference should be given to budget option. Thus, if you spoil some part of the material, you will not incur large material losses. Try, for example, doing standard model chair.

After the sketch is drawn up and the material is selected, you can proceed to the blanks for work:

  • PVA glue,
  • bolts,
  • screws,
  • metal corners,
  • self-tapping screws,
  • pipes or channels.

The choice of the last two elements depends on what exactly you want to do. Make sure that the heads of the fasteners are recessed into the wood, this will prevent you from possible cuts and clothes snags.

Before you start assembling furniture, treat all wood with an antiseptic, this will help prevent the process of decay and the appearance of pests. After the product is ready, you need to cover it with varnish or paint.

Please note that the most comfortable furniture to use has a slight slope to the back. To achieve this, it is necessary to use wedge-shaped parts for the side supports.

Starting to make furniture

The first step is to choose a material. If there is a park near your house where willow grows, this will be ideal. economical option. Along the way, collect small sticks with a diameter of 2-3 centimeters for the frame. After you collect required amount vines, peel it from the bark and let it dry. After sanding, so as not to pick up a splinter during operation.

Decide on sofa size. Measure the width and length of the seat, the distance from the floor to the seat and the height of the backrest.

To make a frame for a seat, we cut 4 sticks to the appropriate size. For example, 2 by 80 and 2 by 60 cm. Then we fasten them with self-tapping screws.

To correctly determine the size of the rear legs, we add the height of the back to the height of the front legs.

If the height is, for example, 30 cm, then the rear legs will be 70 cm high.

To make the backrest, we cut a stick along a length slightly longer than the length of the seat and attach it to the rear legs using self-tapping screws. Due to the fact that our middle leg is slightly higher, the back will turn out in the form of an arc.

Now we divide the willow rods into 4 parts. We make an incision in the form of a cross at the ends of the rods and divide them into parts with our hands. The resulting tapes will help to hide the caps of nails or self-tapping screws.

To give frame rigidity, with the help of self-tapping screws we fasten on a stick between the side legs. Do not forget that the stiffeners must be the same height. Now you need to attach 2 sticks to connect the rear legs. Sticks should be fastened diagonally.

We take a willow twig, turn it into an arc and attach it to the left side of the back. We attach the ends of the rod to the middle and outer legs, and top point arches - to the back. Do the same with the second part of the back.

Now we take a rod bigger size and also turn into an arc. We attach the ends with small nails to the front side legs, and upper part to the seat.

We wrap all parts with protruding nails or caps of self-tapping screws with pre-prepared tapes. For strength stick them with glue.

To make a seat, you need to cut a piece of plywood according to the size of the frame. We nail it with screws or nails.

At the end we process the entire sofa with stain or varnish in several layers. As soon as the coating dries, we lay foam rubber on the plywood and upholster it with the material you like.
