The main stages of restoring a wooden table

Restoring a table made of natural wood requires a careful approach to each stage of restoration. This is the only way to do the work with your own hands correctly and return the furniture to its original appearance (or even make it better). Direct restoration is carried out according to the following scheme:

  1. Selection necessary materials and tools (working with everything ready-made will be much easier than purchasing the necessary materials during the restoration process).
  2. Carrying out initial repairs of the entire structure (this stage concerns the restoration of the integrity of the product: for example, for dining table the work will consist of repairing the frame, for writing - repairing the frame, shelves, drawers).
  3. Removing old coating, restoring wood.
  4. Primary processing and decoration of furniture.
  5. The final stage of auxiliary protection of the created decor.

All of these steps will be appropriate for minor damage to old tables. If large cracks appear on the surface of the countertop or the edges of the solid begin to break off and crumble, then the work will take much longer and may not bring the desired result.

Required materials and tools

To safely and correctly restore an old table, you will need to prepare following tools and materials:

  1. Protective equipment (goggles, mask, gloves).
  2. Sandpaper (fine + coarse) or sanding machine (with fine and coarse abrasive wheels).
  3. Painting tools (brushes, rollers).
  4. Protective compounds for wood (high-quality impregnation to protect wood from moisture, rot, pests, blue discoloration).
  5. Painting and auxiliary compositions (selected paint for repainting wooden furniture or stain, primer, varnish).
  6. Fasteners and tools for repairing an old table (screwdriver, screwdriver, self-tapping screws and screws, liquid nails, furniture glue).

Finishing can be done not only with varnish, but also with wax. The advantage of this composition is the ease of restoration: the scratched area just needs to be re-treated with wax.

Preliminary repair

Carrying out initial repairs involves restoring the strength of the entire table structure. Therefore, you need to start recovery by identifying problem areas. For example, on a table with loose legs, you should remove them and inspect the attachment points ( common cause This phenomenon is considered to be chipped threads). If necessary damaged areas needs to be glued furniture glue. If the problem is that the glue used to glue individual parts has dried out (for example, in the area of the dowels connecting the legs and the shelf of a coffee table), then you should remove old glue and place the parts on liquid nails. In the case of transformable dining tables, it may be necessary to restore the table height adjustment mechanism. Usually the problem with poor movement of the mechanism is solved by simply cleaning the parts and lubricating them.

Removing old coating

When the initial repairs have been carried out and the furniture has been restored to its former strength and reliability, you can begin to remove the old coating. The work can be carried out in several ways:

  • Mechanical.

In this case, the old varnish and paint are cleaned using an abrasive sandpaper or sander. Initially carried out rough cleaning: Use coarse or medium-grain sandpaper to clean off flaking pieces of varnish and paint. Then, fine abrasive sandpaper is used to more accurately remove the residue. The main thing is not to overdo it in your work and not remove top layer tree.

  • Chemical.

There are special compounds designed for removing old varnish and paint from wood. They are applied with a brush to the furniture. Then, after 20-30 minutes, they are removed with a brush (already along with the corroded old coating).

Dust should be removed from the cleaned wood and treated with antiseptic impregnation. The impregnation usually takes about 24 hours to dry. Such work should be carried out both for furniture made of natural wood and for products made of chipboard and MDF.

Repairing cracks and chips

In order to properly repair the table, and not just refresh it, you should take care of proper removal of chips and cracks. To work, you will need a brush, wood putty (preferably as close in color as possible to the color of the wood), and fine-abrasive sandpaper. The following master class will help you do the job correctly:

  1. Carefully remove dust from damaged areas (chips and cracks). If pre-treatment with an antiseptic was carried out, then this work may not be carried out.
  2. Using a soft rubber spatula, “seal” chips and cracks with wood putty. It is necessary to insert the composition as deeply as possible in order to completely close the formed depressions.
  3. Carefully remove excess putty: level the surface of the areas to be restored.
  4. After the putty has dried, walk over the treated areas with fine-abrasive sandpaper.

Preparation for finishing: priming

Before arranging the restored table and decorating it, the surface should be primed. This requirement applies to both the tabletop and the frame itself. To work, you will need shellac, acrylic or alkyd primer: they are suitable for coating wood. Direct priming is carried out as follows:

  1. A small amount of primer is applied to the table surface (processing is initially carried out in sections), distributed rubber spatula. It is advisable to distribute the composition as carefully as possible to obtain an even layer. After covering individual areas, you need to align all transitions so that there are no differences.
  2. After the first coat has dried (usually takes 1 to 6 hours), apply a second coat and wait for it to dry.
  3. Sand over the dried primer to quality leveling surfaces and eliminating any differences.

Ways to give the final decoration

You can paint or decorate a table in an unusual way without involving specialists - with your own hands. This work can be done in different ways:

  • regular coloring;

It is carried out using wood paint and a brush. The composition is evenly distributed over all surfaces.

  • painting with figured rollers;

To paint, you will need wood paint and a roller with three-dimensional patterns on the surface. Paint is applied in one motion, then the roller is adjusted to its width.

  • decoupage;

Decoupage glue is applied to the surface of the table, and prepared paper elements (solid sheets or cut out elements) are glued.

  • dyeing through tulle;

Ironed tulle is laid out on top of the prepared surface (simply primed or painted white). Spray paint is sprayed on top. The tulle is carefully removed so that the design does not smear.

  • painting through a stencil;

A stencil is made from cardboard (or a ready-made one is purchased). The stencil is applied to the table, and the tabletop is painted through the cut out template. A popular option for highlighting the perimeter, corners or central part of the table.

  • multi-color painting.

Several paints with similar colors are used (for example, from light to dark). Paints different colors applied in wide stripes. Then smooth transitions are carefully made between them with a brush.

Final coating with varnish or wax

It will help to consolidate the result of decoration and additionally protect the table from damage and moisture. finishing– varnish or wax. Modern varnishes have fairly good wear resistance and can also be used for coffee tables(which are rarely used), and for kitchen tables (which are used daily). Wax provides the most reliable protection, therefore it is mostly used for treating kitchen tables. The varnish is applied with a brush in 1 layer. The drying time of the composition depends on its characteristics and features (complete drying may require 18-36 hours). The wax paste is applied with a swab or thick brush. Liquid wax is distributed with a brush over the entire surface of the table (table top, legs). Before application, hard wax is melted and then spread with a brush (“rubbed” into the surface). But you need to keep in mind that hard wax may contain chemical additives.

What material to paste over

If painting the table after restoration is not suitable, you should pay attention to modern methods pasting furniture. These include:

  • Pasting with film.

The film is peeled off from the paper base and applied (glued to the table). It is necessary to gradually separate the film and additionally iron its adhesive parts (for example, with a rubber spatula) to remove bubbles. You can additionally blow the film along the edge of the tabletop with a hairdryer for better fixation and also iron it.

  • Tabletop decor with tape.

Decorative tape of different colors can be glued to the tabletop in strips or formed into squares. You can additionally glue a transparent film on top (following the example above) for reliable protection tape from damage and peeling.

  • Pasting the tabletop with stickers.

Regular stickers in the form of patterns, animals, flowers or products are perfect for table decor. They should be glued to a previously degreased countertop surface. Additional protection stickers are not needed: they stick quite well and can be easily removed if necessary.

Restoring a wooden table: the order of operations performed

Restoration begins with the removal of old varnish and paint.

Before proceeding with this plan, it is necessary to carefully examine the entire table and its most hidden nooks and crannies. This is done in order to correctly assess the overall technical condition subject and plan the total amount of work.

Almost any major restoration of a table begins with its disassembly. As a rule, the older the item, the more of its parts require serious instrumental intervention. In some cases (if, for example, the tabletop is very long-term operation severely warped) it is simply pointless to restore certain parts - it will be too expensive and ineffective.

Then it is better to either independently manufacture a product that has completely failed, or order the part from outside specialists. If damage from time and improper storage turned out to be not so destructive, then old design should be carefully strengthened. This means, in particular, that existing joints that are not very strong must be tightened, and very loose joints must be disassembled, then cleaned and re-twisted or glued.

It has been noticed that in furniture one of the most damaged components over time is the paint and varnish coating.

The varnish is removed from the table to the very base.

Therefore, often when they start updating an old wooden table, they have to tear off old paint(which may be laid in several layers) from the surfaces of the table.

If there are too thick coatings or large areas of damaged surface, it is recommended to use a drill with a wire brush attachment to remove the paint. grinder. After complete removal of the old paint, the next stage of preparation is carried out.

It consists of degreasing the cleaned surface. This can be done by thoroughly wiping wooden parts soft rags soaked in special solvents suitable for this coating, alcohol or acetone. Parallel sandpaper or use a grinder to smooth out obvious defects.

However, old damage (potholes, scratches, chips, etc.) cannot always be removed by sanding. High-quality restoration requires mandatory puttying of the surfaces of the old table. At the same time, we must not forget that after the putty has completely dried, all treated surfaces must be sanded well again.

If possible, it is advisable to process old wooden parts separately, after carefully separating the tabletop and underframe. The tabletop is sanded again, after which it is painted with a paint suitable for furniture and covered with 2-3 layers of colorless varnish. This operation is performed without haste, allowing each layer of paint and varnish to dry until it is completely dry.

if there are breaks, these places are glued and pressed tightly against each other with a clamp.

Another part of the table - the underframe - often requires even more attention than the tabletop. After many years of use, it may have cracks in parts and serious breaks. If the owner of such a rarity nevertheless decides to restore it, then he should first, using the appropriate tools, disconnect the legs from the base.

The fracture sites must be glued to further connect the separated parts. Then, using clamps, these parts are pressed tightly against each other. Sometimes, to better tighten the dried parts together, you can use self-tapping screws, which are very useful in inconvenient places where it is difficult or impossible to install a clamp.

After the glue has dried (about 12-15 hours), the screws are removed from wooden elements table. The tabletop and underframe are connected to each other either with glue, or by providing a removable connection, which will be very useful in small apartments.

The restoration of the table ends with varnishing of the wood parts. But before that they need to be opened with stain. To avoid drips, it is better to do this with a piece of soft foam rubber. After the stain has dried wooden surfaces The tables are primed with clear varnish (primer) and lightly sanded with fine sandpaper.

To give furniture freshness and solidity, wallpaper that imitates the texture of wood of any valuable species is well suited. To give the composition a feeling of integrity and completeness, the table legs can be varnished in wood tones.
  5. Coffee table. A bright pattern with geometric elements will harmonize well with this option. As a background, it is better to choose some kind of dull paint, which is recommended to be applied to the tabletop with a spray gun. Geometric pattern applied to a dry painted surface with a brush or special masking tape. The fragments between the stripes can be filled with brightly colored paints.

The kitchen table can be decorated using decoupage technique.

If the table legs will be detached from the underframe, it is worth marking in advance where exactly the particular leg was located. Each leg should be installed in the place where it was before repair.

When covering a table with a white primer, you must be prepared for the fact that almost all defects will become visible on its surfaces.

To provide furniture surfaces with maximum strength, varnish coating must consist of at least 3 layers made with a paint roller, 5 layers with a spray gun and 10 layers with a cotton swab.

Very old thing, which, despite everything, retained the stability and grace of the lower extremities. Her young owners decided that a slightly outrageous outfit would not hurt her. Unlike lovely ladies, old things bright colors sometimes it suits you very well.

But when small children come to visit, they are delighted with such a dining table, which on ordinary days does not take up any extra space. This acrylic paints, stencil and preliminary sketch on paper.

idea #2: instead of boring lessons-> exciting hobby

Once upon a time there was a girl, and she considered preparing her homework to be the most boring thing in the world. Therefore, I transferred all my feelings to my school table. And then she grew up and realized how to get rid of not the most pleasant memories.

The body of the old table was stripped of worn paint, puttied and repainted in stylish color wenge. Furniture film with a zebrano pattern was attached to the drawer fronts. And the new bright red funny paw-shaped handles are in harmony with the shade of the inside of the drawers, also updated. It turned out to be an excellent place for a home hobby: just look at it, and the boredom will blow away like the wind.

idea #3:massive monster ->elegant gentleman

The massive old table has survived more than one generation of intellectuals in this family. One of the great-grandfathers of the current owner even owned a successful publishing house. His entrepreneurial spirit was inherited.

The young lady showed her imagination and turned family heirloom into an elegant piece that blends perfectly with her home. And to complete the impression, I surrounded it with interior details that matched the color. Laconic bronze handles, specially purchased in vintage style - as a keepsake of the origin of the table.

idea #4: sad gray donkey-> flirty green crocodile

The gray, faceless two-pedestal table had long ceased to please its owners, and they were thinking about how to get rid of it. But one day a student niece came to visit, critically examined the “donkey” and a couple of days later brought it to her home, despite the protests of her parents.

Imagine the amazement of the old owners when they saw what happened to the boring object. Its young owner created a flirtatious corner for studying and sewing. Juicy green tone matte paint- on the table and old chair from the pantry. Plus - new fluffy leather upholstery for the seat. idea No. 5: the Baroness's journey from the 18th to the 21st century

Its new owner purchased this elegant antique item at a flea market. The seller assured that Baroness N had once owned it. Well, the buyer decided, then we’ll rejuvenate the Baroness.

As you know, white color refreshes even a very advanced age. This was chosen as the new color for this antique dressing table. The necessary variety is achieved thanks to a new tabletop using the decoupage technique and harmoniously selected objects on it.

Idea #6: The Exhausted Friend of Magazines-> mobile thing for a children's room

Almost every house once lived like this coffee table. And some people still have it somewhere in their closet or at their dacha to this day. Why not give it a chance to serve your children too?!

Check how tightly the fastenings for the legs and table top are held. Add bright colors and a stencil pattern - in general, nothing complicated. This table already “wore” rollers. If yours does not yet have such mobility, then strengthen them too: a bright mobile thing will certainly please the young owner.

idea #7:old card table -> a cozy place for a meal on the balcony

Like all previous tables, this card table was stripped of its old finish and given a fresh coat of paint. And small format ceramic tiles were attached inside. Now it can easily withstand weather fluctuations on an open balcony.

Let's give our 2 cents on this topic: instead of tiles, you can use inexpensive mosaics - it will look absolutely luxurious. Or - scraps of multi-colored tiles left over from renovation: split into small pieces and laid like a mosaic - this is a budget solution.

Important: regular tile adhesive (dry in bags) cannot be used, only ready-made, viscous, solvent-based adhesive (dragon type).

idea #8: fresh colors bring summer closer

A weather- and wind-resistant metal table served you faithfully in your yard for several years, but now, alas, it has lost its appearance? The same situation happened in this story. And recently folding chairs with wooden seat and back on metal frame. In anticipation of summer, the owners decided to create such a colorful corner that would attract attention. Turquoise paint for metal and the same for wood (on chairs). Plus - update the legs of the entire “set” with black.

But the most spectacular decoration is white drawing on the tabletop, applied using a stencil. If you don’t want to bother with “small art,” you can use ready-made stickers made from vinyl film.

As you know, old tables and chairs are often simply thrown away because they look gloomy and old-fashioned. But this is not very advisable at today’s prices for furniture products.

By the way, old furniture (of the Soviet type), for example, is made very well and if it is brought into divine shape, it will last for many more decades.

The process of restoring an old table with your own hands.
And so, an old table that had lived for a very long time was taken as a basis. long life, which the author inherited from his grandmother. At first glance, it looks very unattractive and even dejected, the plywood has peeled off in places, there are many scratches and chips, the varnish has faded from the sun and time. But general view still stately, for this reason the master decided to revive him.

To begin with, all the boxes were removed and a visual assessment of all more problem areas requiring urgent restoration. The bottom of almost all the boxes has delaminated; the plywood should be replaced with new one.

He removes the old plywood and screws on the new one, making the bottom according to the old dimensions.

Also, all the old fittings are removed from the table, because the author will subsequently install new ones that fit the new style. The old one should be left, “it will be useful on the farm.”

Then the table is taken out into the open air, because the work will be quite dusty, as well as contact with paint and varnish materials, or painting should be done in a well-ventilated area. An oilcloth was spread under the table so as not to litter the yard.

Next, you must definitely remove the old coating of varnish or paint, for which today various removers and solvents are used, and you will also have to work well with sandpaper so that not a trace remains of the old coating.

The work is labor-intensive and requires a lot of patience during monotonous work.

And now the long-awaited moment has come (painting). The master will paint his table using a can of paint; of course, you can’t paint the entire table with one can; you’ll have to fork out for 2-3 cans. The author paints thin layer so that the pattern of the tree is slightly visible.
If you have a spray gun, then it will be much easier and more economical for you to paint the furniture being restored.

Painting should be carried out at a certain distance and the spray of paint from the can should be evenly distributed over the surface to be painted in order to avoid smudges.

After the table has been painted and a certain amount of time has passed for drying, the master applies an additional layer of varnish; you can also simply rub it with a special wax-based composition so that the product shines and shines, playing with color in the sun.

In place of the old fittings, a new one is screwed in, matching the new style of the table. Here everyone should have their own choice and preference.

Look how beautiful the end result is.
