How to restore an oak table. How to restore your old table with your own hands

A photo
Restoring a coffee table on your own is a rather painstaking, but not very difficult task. If you get acquainted with the technology, take into account the advice of experts, purchase high-quality materials, you can give your favorite thing a second life.

Table painting is a very complex and lengthy process, but all you need is a sketch, a marker or paint, and varnish.

Alteration of furniture consists of several stages: removal of old varnish, restoration of a wooden surface, painting or tinting, varnishing (waxing).

How to get rid of the old coating?

You will need:

  • cycler or grinder;
  • sandpaper;
  • putty on wood;
  • putty knife.

Restoration of a coffee table begins with the removal of old varnish. The easiest way is to use a grinder, but in this case, maximum care should be taken, as the tool can damage the wooden surface. You can use special solvents. Here it is important to calculate the thickness of the layer: the product should only dissolve the varnish, without reaching the tree. If the solvent is absorbed into the surface of the coffee table, then this will complicate all subsequent steps, the materials may not “make friends” with each other, as a result of which swelling, peeling or cracking of the paintwork will occur.

The main materials and tools for decorating a coffee table are: acrylic paint, brushes, glue and pictures.

If the old varnish has many cracks and is worn off in places, then it is easy to remove it with ordinary sandpaper. Take medium-grained paper, moisten it, wrap it around the bar, walk over the surface. When the sandpaper becomes clogged with dust, rinse it in water and get back to work. Under the influence of moisture, the old varnish will soften and be easily cleaned off. After you remove the varnish, sand the surface of the coffee table with fine grit sandpaper. You can clean off the old coating with a scraper or a piece of broken glass. In this case, you can not do without work gloves. The varnish gradually chipped off the surface, while care must be taken not to damage the wood. All of these methods have their advantages and disadvantages. Which one to choose is up to you.

After the old varnish has been removed, it is necessary to putty all cracks, chips and scratches. Putty is applied with a spatula, leveled so that it does not protrude above the surface, left to dry completely, then sanded with fine sandpaper. If you plan to tint the table with a stain, then it is better to purchase putty to match the color of the wood.

Toning and painting a coffee table

You will need:

Decorating the table with a mosaic allows you to hide the cracks and stains that have appeared.

  • primer;
  • acrylic paint or stain;
  • furniture wax;
  • brushes;
  • sandpaper.

Restoration of a coffee table involves painting or toning the product with a stain (wax). First you need to prime the surface: use a special primer for wood, apply the composition with a brush in 1-2 layers with obligatory intermediate drying. If you use a stain, then the priming step can be omitted.

The paint is applied with a brush, for countertops it is more convenient to use a roller or a paint spatula. Hard-to-reach places are painted over with a thin brush. It is important to apply the paint in a thin, even layer - then you can avoid sagging. After the first layer dries, go over it with fine sandpaper. The second time the paint is applied in the opposite direction. All colorful layers must be sanded with sandpaper - then the surface will turn out perfectly smooth, and the stripes from the brush will be invisible.

Restoration of the table can be done with a stain or colored wax. Stain is water-based and alcohol-based, the former gives a softer tone. The stain is applied with a wide flat brush (flute). You can mix colors with each other, apply one tone to another, brighten the center, darken the edges - it all depends on your imagination. Instead of stain, you can use colored wax, which, when restoring the surface, performs several roles at once. With its help, toning and fixing the result are performed at the same time. When using bituminous wax over the stain, you can achieve a depth of color.

Wax is rubbed with a soft cotton cloth in a very thin layer, while you can not return to the treated area, otherwise dark places may turn out. Some manufacturers recommend melting the wax in a water bath for a large amount of work, in which case it is applied with a brush. After the first layer dries, it is polished with a woolen cloth, then the next one is applied. This is done until the surface is perfectly smooth. If you painted the table with acrylic paint, then it is better to use transparent furniture wax to fix the result.

Decorating a coffee table with gilding

You will need:

  • gold or silver potal;
  • shellac;
  • stencil;
  • flat brush.

You can decorate a coffee table with sweat, for example, make golden butterflies or silver dragonflies. For this purpose, you need to purchase a ready-made stencil or make it yourself. On a thick film, draw the outline of a dragonfly, then cut it out with a blade or a thin knife. Attach the stencil to the surface of the table with masking tape. Apply shellac, leave it for a while. The varnish should dry a little, but at the same time remain sticky - then the potal will stick well.

Attach the sweat sheet to the stencil, gently smooth it with a brush, leave it to dry completely, then brush off the remaining gold with a brush, remove the stencil. You can muffle the bright sheen of sweat with the help of antique bitumen, which is applied with a thin layer of foam sponge. The result is fixed with shellac.

In no case should the potal be covered with acrylic varnish, otherwise it will oxidize over time.

Materials for gilding are an expensive pleasure, if desired, they can be replaced with transfer foil for nails and special glue for the body. The application technology is almost the same: first a stencil is attached, the surface is smeared with glue, left for about 5 minutes (the exact time is always indicated on the attached instructions). Then the foil is applied with the rough side down, smoothed with a fingernail, sharply torn off. The result is fixed with an aerosol varnish - then the foil will not wrinkle. DIY coffee table repair completed!

An old table, loose and shriveled, and besides, creaky, like an unlubricated cart, and hands itch to send to a fire or to a landfill. But if you work on it a little, you can get a very good furniture accessory, such as a coffee table (if you shorten the legs to a certain length), or a TV table. In my barn, on a shelf, forgotten by everyone, was an ordinary kitchen table. Disassembled. Four bolted legs, a wooden base fastened with metal brackets, and three fragments of a table top.

After examining this rarity, I at first decided to send it to the garbage truck; from a long laying, the fragments of the tabletop made of chipboard swelled up under the influence of moisture, and after drying, of course, they did not return to their original shape. Moreover, besides, they became brittle and sawdust fell from them, from which they, in fact, were made ...

The wooden base, on the contrary, shrank to the point that it was shaking, as if alive, as soon as it was picked up! After a little thought, I decided, nevertheless, to try to "reanimate" it. One way or another, I won't lose much if I fail.

It will take

  • Hacksaw.
  • Gas wrench or pliers.
  • Glue universal (you can "Moment").
  • Glue composite (cold welding).
  • Glue cyan acrylate (super glue).
  • Marker.
  • Drill and drills for 4 and 9.
  • Long ruler (or level with ruler markings).
  • Four thick hex furniture screws.
  • A small sheet of chipboard for a new countertop.
  • Decorative self-adhesive film for countertop cladding (with a pattern of your choice).

Restoring an old table

First you need to disassemble the wooden base. Unscrew all existing screws, remove metal brackets.

Our table will be half the size of the previous one, which means that those crossbars that used to be the width of the table will now become its long.

You can choose the width of the new table yourself, to your taste. You can even make it square! To do this, take the remaining long crossbars, and shorten them to the width of the future table you need.

Just make sure that the width of the future table is at least half of its length, otherwise it will be unstable! Now, at the sawn ends of the crossbars, we will make grooves for metal staples with a hacksaw, as we did before.

Next, let's deal with the holes left from the screws after disassembling the table. Most of these holes will again be in their original places, and in order to keep the screws holding the metal brackets well in them, we will use matches and universal glue. We dip the match into the glue (or drip glue into the hole), push it all the way into the hole, and break it off.

It turned out to be a kind of stub-chepik. Now the screw will hold well in this hole, and the table will not stagger. Well, so that the “new” table does not creak, drop a drop of machine oil onto the points of contact of all individual fragments of the table, both wooden and metal. Now let's do the legs. If a threaded connection is unscrewed at these legs, it is advisable to unscrew it from the leg. Lubricate the threads with composite or universal adhesive, and screw back.

All the way. If the connection dangles, but does not unscrew (it also happens when the threaded pin has a “T”-shaped end inside the legs), then you will have to use cyan acrylate (super glue). We drip it into the gap between the joint and the wood until it stops going inside. Leave the glued legs to dry. For a couple of hours, so that the composite glue has time to grab. (By the way, the legs can also be shortened to the height you need, planed with a planer, narrowed down if they are square, and covered with stain.) During this time, you can assemble a wooden base; we fasten the prepared crossbars with staples and screws.

After the time allotted for the composite glue to harden, we fasten the legs to the base. As before to the old table.

Now we take the prepared chipboard sheet (I took the end wall from the old cabinet for this purpose), cut out the countertop of the required area and sand the sawn edges with sandpaper or a wood file.

We put the countertop on a flat surface, with the front (most smooth!) Side down. We put the base on top of the countertop, legs up and mark the corners of the legs with a marker.

We remove the base and drill 4 mm holes in each corner, so that the holes are in the centers of the legs. Now we put the base on the legs, put the countertop on it, and look from below so that the marks made earlier with the marker converge. Now, according to the holes in the countertop, we drill holes further - inside the legs, to the length of the screw.

Well, with a drill of eight millimeters, we will make small recesses over the holes, melt, for the heads of the screws and screw the screws.

We cover the head of the screw with composite glue so that the countertop has a flat surface. You can pre-lubricate the surface of the recess, and the screw head in it, with machine oil, then it will be possible to easily pick out these resulting plugs in the future in order to dismantle the table, if necessary.

We are waiting for the composite glue to dry and, at the end, glue the countertop with an adhesive decorative film.

Paste with self-adhesive wallpaper should be as careful as possible; there will be no second chance to re-paste. To do this, I had to dismantle the table (fortunately, this is not long - unscrew four screws and unscrew four nuts!). I humidified the air in the room with a sprayer, so that the dust particles do not fall on the pasted surface, and do not form bumps and bubbles after the work done. I wiped the surface with alcohol, and carefully, starting from one of the corners, smoothing the film in different directions from the corner with a dry cloth, glued the film on each part in turn. If the bubbles still could not be avoided, pierce them with a thin needle in several places, put an ordinary kitchen napkin on the bubble and put a flat-bottomed mug filled with boiling water in this place. For one or two minutes. After this procedure, the bubble will disappear. And one moment; having pasted over the countertop, I changed my mind about hiding the screw heads - I really liked how shiny metal hats look, recessed into the texture of the “stone”.

But this is an individual matter. If someone does not like it, you can hide the hats. Just cover them with glue and stick patches cut out from the same film on top ... This is how the table was (in size!):

And so it became - small and compact:

It will fit well into the interior of some small room in a country house. I think it turned out well. Even very good!

How to update an old table: 10 restoration methods and step-by-step instructions for action

To this day, in many houses, Soviet coffee, dining and writing tables have been preserved. The design itself is made soundly and with high quality, but the years have not spared the appearance. Let's look at 10 ways to restore such furniture at home, and craftsmen will receive a master class on restoring tables with their own hands.

How to update the table with your own hands - 10 ways

In fact, there are many more ways to update old furniture, but we have chosen 10 options that a home master can easily master.

Method number 1: painting

Painting is deservedly considered the simplest and most affordable way of home restoration, for example, even a child can take a brush and paint a countertop, but we will talk about the technical side of the process later, but now we will try to choose the right paint.

What paint to choose?

Illustrations Recommendations

oily

Oil paints have been used to paint wood for over 100 years. You get a strong and durable coating for reasonable money. Most formulations give a glossy sheen.

But oil paint does not let air through and burns out in the sun over time, plus it can dry up to 2 days and all this time it will exude a pungent odor.

Acrylic

Acrylic paints are now breaking records of popularity. They are water-dispersed compositions based on acrylic resins.

These compositions are odorless, dry quickly enough and are absolutely harmless to the environment. In addition, acrylic is not afraid of ultraviolet rays and has excellent vapor permeability.

In fact, the only negative is the relatively high price.

Alkyd

Alkyd paints have high film strength and provide a water-repellent effect. The price of the compositions is acceptable.

But the alkyd coating has low abrasion resistance, so these compounds are not suitable for countertops in the kitchen, but a bedside table or a small coffee table in the living room will last a long time.

Alkyd paints are applied only to dry wood (up to 12% moisture), otherwise the coating will peel off.

Enamels for wooden surfaces

Enamel is not a type of paint, but rather a separate direction. There are acrylic enamels, alkyd enamels, nitro enamels and a number of similar compositions.

Enamels are matte, semi-gloss and glossy. All of them are distinguished by high strength and wear resistance of the coating. In the line of any type of paint, enamel is in the top position, it is more expensive, but the quality is incommensurably higher there.

Most types of table restoration at home involve pre-staining with one or another composition, so painting is considered the basis.

Method number 2: art painting

Many home craftsmen are afraid of this method of restoration. Indeed, real art painting requires serious professional skills and talent. But no one asks you to transfer plots of great artists to furniture, and drawing a few flowers is not so difficult.

In addition, the category of artistic painting includes work with stencils and some types of appliqué. Agree, it will not be difficult to paint a cabinet or tabletop using ready-made stencils. You can find the right stencil at any book market, and sometimes even at hawkers in the underpass.

Method number 3: craquelure

According to the definition, craquelure is a finish covered with a chaotic grid of small cracks, as in an old painting. Now this effect is achieved through the use of special craquelure compositions, they are one and two-component.

  • One-component formulations are applied over the paint and upon contact with air, cracks form over the entire coating area during the drying process. They are cheaper and easier to work with. But a solid mesh looks only on plain furniture without painting or patterns.
  • Two-component craquelure varnishes are more practical, they can be used for fragmentary finishing. First, the main component is applied over the entire area, and then in the right places it is covered with an additive, which causes cracking. Moreover, the grid is formed without clear boundaries, as if in a natural way.

Craquelure looks great when combined with decoupage technique. In this case, translucent pictures cut out of thin paper napkins are glued to PVA, after which all this is completely or fragmentarily covered with craquelure varnish, as a result you get an old piece of furniture.

Method number 4: mosaic

Mosaic paintings have been known since time immemorial, ideally smalt is used to create an ornament, but this material is expensive and it is too expensive to decorate an old table with it. Plus, smalt mosaic elements have different sizes and thicknesses, so only professionals can work with them.

In our case, it is much cheaper to arrange a mosaic on an old table. There is now a wide variety of tiled and glass mosaics in construction stores, the price there is acceptable. In addition, broken tiles and even randomly broken old CDs are great for home mosaics.

As for the technology of arrangement, the old countertop is usually cleaned to a tree and covered with several layers of acrylic primer, and when the primer dries, a mosaic is glued. At the amateur level, they use liquid nails or some kind of super glue, each element is glued separately.

Professionals do it differently, they take dry tile adhesive, dilute it with water and apply it all over the countertop with a notched trowel, after which they lay out the mosaic elements. The process is fast, but laying out a pattern without experience is difficult.

If there is no time to lay out each element, then you can buy ready-made mosaic canvases. There, small tiles were initially fixed to the fiberglass and you just have to stick it on the tile adhesive to the countertop, and then wipe the gaps. Fast, high quality, but not exclusive.

Method number 5: self-adhesive film

Self-adhesive film on the countertop is mounted in a maximum of an hour. Now in this market there are countless options for decorating the film, from a single-color coating to imitation wood, stone, and even reproductions of paintings by famous artists. Plus, the ornament can be ordered for reasonable money.

The installation technique itself is not complicated, but the main requirement is a perfectly even, polished base. I will tell you how to polish the countertop later, and the film is glued in 3 stages:

  1. After you have polished the countertop, the dust is wiped off and a couple of layers of acrylic primer are applied to the surface, with each layer applied after the previous one has dried.
  2. Now we need a soapy solution, you can dissolve a bar of soap in water or use dishwashing detergent. The solution is applied with a sponge to the countertop.
  3. The film is glued from the edge of the countertop. The protective paper is removed gradually as the plank is glued. From under that part of the film that lay on the countertop, air is immediately expelled along with the soap solution. It is convenient to expel air with a plastic wallpaper spatula or rags.

Method number 6: decorative tape

In stationery stores, scotch tape of different colors and shades is sold, you need to buy it in assortment and paste it on the countertop like wallpaper. Although, to be honest, colored tape is more of a children's option. The child will be interested in the process.

  • First, the countertop is polished and degreased with any alcohol-containing solution, for example, cologne.
  • If the plane is pasted over continuously, then the first strip is glued along a pre-drawn straight line, it is better to start from the edge of the countertop.
  • Subsequent strips are glued end-to-end and immediately rolled with a wallpaper rubber roller for seams. It is a rubber wheel with a handle, 25 - 30 mm wide.

In operation, decorative tape is inconvenient. This cover will only look good if you don't use the table at all. If, for example, you equip a teenager’s desk in this way, then the tapes will begin to fly off in a couple of weeks, and there is simply no point in strengthening colored tape with varnish.

Method number 7: epoxy resin

Epoxy resin is a two-component composition that, when combined with liquid components, turns into a solid plastic. For decorative purposes, a transparent epoxy is used. You have probably seen transparent key chains inside of which there are small objects, so this is epoxy resin.

With the help of epoxy, you can quickly restore a cracked and cracked countertop. You only need to connect the components according to the instructions on the package and pour the composition into cracks and potholes.

In addition, the decorative effect will increase significantly if, for example, silver with a phosphor (a compound that causes glow in the dark) is added to a transparent epoxy. True, after the composition has completely hardened, the countertop must be sanded and polished.

Method number 8: decor under glass

It is difficult to call decor under glass restoration as such. The point is that a superstructure in the form of a flat box 50 - 100 mm high is attached to the tabletop. The top cover of this box is made of glass, and any decorations are poured inside, for example, sea shells, colored pebbles or small souvenirs.

Method number 9: painting through tulle

In many rustic styles, a patterned tablecloth on the table is considered a must. With the help of white and some kind of contrasting paint, in a couple of hours you can arrange the decor for a tulle tablecloth with your own hands. This is one of the options for screen painting.

  • You need to find a piece of old tulle, preferably without holes.
  • Now you need to paint the countertop white.
  • When the paint dries, lay out the tulle on it and make sure that the pattern looks adequate. To prevent the fabric from accidentally moving, it is advisable to secure it with pushpins under the tabletop.
  • Next, take a can of nitro enamel with contrasting paint and evenly apply the composition over the tulle. After 15 minutes, the tulle can be removed, and after half an hour the table is ready for use.

Method number 10: potal (gilding)

In classical styles, fragmentary gilding of furniture is often performed. At the amateur level, in the budget version, you can use gilding with paint, but the look will be mediocre.

Potal is the application of a thin layer of gilding to the surface. The technology is similar to working with a simple carbon paper, only instead of a layer of transfer paint, gilding is applied there. The master attaches a stencil to the surface, after which he applies a “golden” carbon paper to the right places and rolls it. The effect of gilding here is an order of magnitude higher.

When working in the potal technique, after applying a gilded layer to the surface, it is necessary to cover this surface with several layers of transparent varnish so that the gilding does not wear off.

The sequence of restoration work

We talked about the final phase and the decorative effect of each type of finish, now we will analyze the technique of preparing the table for decoration, which, by the way, is common to all methods of restoring old furniture.

Determining the degree of wear

To determine the level of deterioration of furniture, it is desirable to completely disassemble it. Then carefully inspect each element of the structure. In addition to obvious potholes, scratches and cracks, we are interested in places of peeling of the facade cladding and places eaten away by bark beetles.

Choosing a material

For restoration work, the following materials will be needed:

  • Putty for wood, parquet compositions can be used.
  • Ground for wood. You select the composition with an eye to the paint or varnish with which you plan to cover the furniture. For example, acrylic primer is used for acrylic paint, alkyd primer for alkyd paint, and linseed oil for oil paint.
  • Finishing paint or varnish.
  • To clean metal from rust, WD-40 is used.
  • A set of emery in the range, from large to velvet.
  • Separately, you should not take an antiseptic for a tree, it is easier to choose a primer with an antiseptic effect.

Step-by-step instruction

Illustrations Recommendations
Step 1

First you need to remove the old coating. This can be done with a large emery or building hair dryer.

It is not advisable to use chemically active paint removers, they can permanently ruin old furniture.

Step 2

All deep potholes and cracks are cleaned and expanded with a knife or chisel, after which they are primed and puttied.

Step 3

All details are polished. Start with medium grit emery and work your way up to velvet.

Step 4

Cover the table with soil and leave it to dry completely.

Step 5

Apply a minimum of 2 coats of topcoat or varnish. It is better to work with an airbrush, in the absence of an airbrush, brushes are used.

Conclusion

The methods and instructions for restoring old furniture that we have listed have been repeatedly tested in practice and are guaranteed to work. The video in this article shows the process step by step. If you have any questions, write in the comments, I will try to help.

Everyone dreamed at least once in their life to discover artistic talent and try themselves as a restorer or decorator. Table restoration is a unique opportunity to combine business with pleasure. Firstly, this is a good way to save on buying new furniture, and secondly, restoring an old table with your own hands is doubly pleasant. It is noteworthy that the restoration technology is available to everyone, even non-professionals. The result is an exclusive product, which has no analogues. How to restore and transform an old kitchen table? How to cover a wooden tabletop? Tips, recommendations, photos, as well as a unique new master class on restoration from designers will help you make a real masterpiece from an outdated piece of furniture.

Furniture restoration is a very exciting process in itself, and with a competent approach it is also very useful, allowing you to significantly save on the purchase of new furniture.

Update methods

How to update the countertop in the kitchen with your own hands? What are the wood countertops in the kitchen covered with? Beginners have many questions and, as a result, difficulties in the restoration process, which plunge them into a stupor. Of course, any alteration and restoration of kitchen furniture may not lead to the result that was originally planned. However, here it should be remembered that it is never too late to get rid of the old table and buy a new one, but it is still worth a try.

You can do the restoration of the kitchen table with your own hands or update it in the following ways.

  1. Painting through tulle involves painting the product with paint according to the principle of a stencil. To do this, the fabric is spread on the table in such a way that there are no tubercles. Next, you need to use spray paint to paint over the entire surface and let it dry, then remove the tulle. As a result, a beautiful lace pattern is formed on the table.
  2. Alteration of the table may consist in the restoration with the help of ceramic tiles. Such a coating is not only attractive, but also practical, as it withstands various kinds of impacts. It can be whole blocks or multi-colored fragments in the form of a mosaic. If there is no tile, glass fragments can be used as a material for restoration.
  3. You can update the old table with a self-adhesive film. Modern manufacturers offer inexpensive models with original drawings. For restoration, it is enough to glue the surface of the product - and it will change before our eyes.
  4. If the table is made of solid wood, you can use the burning technique as an idea for restoration, but this requires certain work skills, as well as special equipment in the form of an electric burner.
  5. Decoupage is a very fashionable way to transform furniture and give it a completely different look. This does not require special artistic skills, because ready-made photos on paper or a napkin, which are attached to the table, are taken as the basis.

Product restoration

Restoration of the countertop involves returning to its original appearance without visible changes in the design. Many private masters and firms offer their restoration services, but due to the high cost, this option is not available to everyone. The restoration process is long and painstaking, however, if you wish, you can update the kitchen table with your own hands at home. Before you repair the countertop, you need to prepare the following materials:

  • goggles, respirator, gloves;
  • grinder or sandpaper of coarse and fine grain;
  • art or paint brush, roller;
  • impregnation and putty for wood;
  • wood glue, liquid nails;
  • acrylic or alkyd paint, stain, countertop varnish or wax;
  • antiseptic and primer.

When the necessary tools are at hand, you can get to work.

preliminary repair

Before covering the wooden tabletop, you should pay attention to the underframe and the general condition of the table: are the legs loosened, are some parts missing. The new life of an old table begins first of all with the elimination of these defects, since the functional component is important for any furniture. It must be disassembled, the old coating removed from each part, sanded and assembled back, fixed with glue or liquid nails. Many restorers insist that the integrity of the table should not be violated, as it will quickly become unusable.

Here each case is individual. For flimsy designs, assembly can really be fatal. The puncher may destroy the surface or it may be chipped. If the furniture is solid and massive, then you should not be afraid of this. With proper assembly, the product will become more durable and stable. After work, it is important to ventilate the room, as the accumulated dust can later settle on the countertop of the kitchen table. Dust adhering to the surface after painting will spoil the appearance, so general cleaning will not hurt.

Primary processing

A wooden table, like chipboard countertops, needs to be impregnated with an antiseptic, which will protect against pests and fungi. This substance will not allow woodworms to attack the product in the future. After processing, the table is recommended to be left to dry for at least a day. Next, you need to remove the old coating with a grinder. You can also use coarse-grained sandpaper at the beginning and fine-grained sandpaper at the end of grinding.

Kitchen worktop restoration

Before covering a wooden countertop, you should carefully inspect the surface for damage and chips. Small cracks up to 3 mm are sealed with putty, and then polished again so that there are no tubercles. Large chips can be repaired with veneer. You must first make a stencil of the desired size. In order to make it correctly, you should cover the surface of the chipped part of the table with paint, then press it with paper. A clean, unpainted spot is the necessary stencil. Next, you need to cut the veneer along the contour and glue it to the surface with wood glue. Pressing the part tightly, leave to dry for 10-12 hours. How to cover the countertop after cosmetic repairs? Alkyd or shellac primer for wood. This will ensure even paint coverage. The primer should be applied in 2 coats and allowed to dry completely after each treatment. After that, the surface can be sanded again.

Table painting

Now you can proceed directly to painting. Since the restoration requires the restoration of the original appearance, you should choose the right shade. Modern manufacturers offer a wide range of color palettes, but it is not always possible to find an absolutely identical version that was used before restoration. You can purchase several types of paints, mix them and come to the desired color. How to cover a wooden tabletop so that it lasts for many more years? There are a lot of options here, but the most common is water-dispersion acrylic paint. It is non-toxic, dries quickly and is quite moisture resistant.

Using a brush, apply a thin layer, leave to dry, then cover with a second one - and also allow to dry. For dark shades, it is recommended to repeat the procedure three times. If the table will stand on the street, care must be taken to protect the surface from moisture and precipitation. This is where alkyd paint comes in handy. Despite the pungent toxic smell, it is successfully used for outdoor decoration. It is moisture resistant and is not afraid of direct sunlight. The most budget option is oil paint based on drying oil. This material is suitable for restoring coffee table tops that are not actively exposed to mechanical stress. Please note that after dyeing, the product will be ready for further processing after 3-4 days.

Protective covering

How to cover wooden countertops in the kitchen for long-term use? Best with matte water-based polyurethane varnish. It will provide reliable protection against external influences and damage. The varnish is applied in 2-3 layers in one direction, after each it is necessary to dry the surface for 4 hours and sand it. How to varnish a countertop so that there are no waves? It is necessary to wait for complete drying, and clean the small points with sandpaper. A white spot may form at the cleaning site, but this should not be scared, because after polishing the surface will become perfectly smooth.

Polish should be selected according to characteristics similar to the previous varnish. After the procedure, you can cover the countertop with wax. These are special wax sheets with a pleasant natural aroma. Before work, it should be softened (you can warm it up a little or leave it in the sun), and then rub it in in a circular motion with a felt. This process is long and painstaking, but special attention should be paid to it, because the further service life and the presentable appearance of the product depend on the quality of the coating.

There is another option than to cover a wooden tabletop - this is ordinary wax, which is rubbed into the surface with a cotton cloth. Such a polished table looks very stylish and sophisticated, but is more suitable for the living room than for the kitchen.

This is how the long process of restoration is carried out. A little patience, diligence and a creative creative approach - and the old piece of furniture will look like in a photo from a glamorous magazine.

And in conclusion, a video with a detailed description of the process of restoring a wooden tabletop.

Over time, the wooden table loses its former attractive appearance. But this is no reason to send it to the nearest landfill or dusty attic. If desired, all the shortcomings can be corrected. Features of the restoration of a wooden table

Even the highest quality furniture cannot last forever. Over time, the surface of the table loses its original appearance. Small cracks, chips appear on it, the varnish begins to wear off, and the fasteners no longer withstand the load. Restoration of an old table is a serious repair, which primarily involves updating damaged parts. At the same time, it is very important to understand that chipboard is almost beyond repair. It is better to simply throw away the old surface, and put a new one in its place.

Before updating the countertop, it is imperative to remove the old finishing coating. If it is a painted or varnished table, then the top layer should be washed off with alcohol, acetone, organic solvents. On sale there are also many special tools for these purposes. They are presented in the form of liquids, gels or powders.

If there are minor scratches or damage of a different nature on the wooden structure, they are carefully treated with sandpaper with a small grain size. Closing cracks in the repair of wooden tables is carried out using:

  • putties for wood;
  • mixtures of glue and wood shavings;
  • epoxy resin or special wax correctors.

In wide and deep cracks, you can insert rectangular pieces of suitable size or wedges of wood and fix it all with universal glue. The resulting gaps need to be hidden, for this they are filled with resin or putty. When doing such repairs, it is worth remembering an important rule - all surfaces must be dry. Wood is a very vulnerable material. It must be protected from moisture, bacteria, fungi, ultraviolet radiation. Therefore, it is necessary to take care of the protective layer (primer, paint, varnish or azure). Most often, varnish is used for these purposes. To change the shade of furniture, you need to cover it not with a transparent, but with a colored varnish. The result is a very stylish and presentable polished table.

The next step is to process the entire area of \u200b\u200bthe furniture with medium-sized sandpaper. Here you need to try and grind the table to a perfectly smooth state. How the paint or varnish will lay down will largely depend on the level of smoothness. Before varnishing the product, the wood is primed. To preserve the natural beauty and texture of wooden products, they are often coated with a special tinting liquid (stain) or water-based acrylic varnish.

During the restoration of the table with your own hands, the master requires care and caution. It is necessary to work with chemicals in a room with good ventilation, it is also advisable to do this in overalls and a respirator.

Necessary tools and consumables

Before updating the table, you need to stock up on the necessary tools and supplies, which are best taken care of in advance. To carry out the work, you may need the following inventory:

  • sandpaper of varying degrees of grit (from 80 to 180 for initial processing, from 500 to 600 for polishing the final coating) or a grinder;
  • a set of brushes and a roller;
  • an electric drill and several drills of different diameters;
  • chisel;
  • plane;
  • hammer, stock of nails and nail puller;
  • saw;
  • marker;
  • roulette;
  • rubber spatula to remove old paint;
  • putty, primer, varnish, paint;
  • glue for wood;
  • protective equipment: masks, gloves, respirator;
  • means for protecting wood (impregnation that protects against adverse factors, for example, wood decay or pests).

Also, a set of screwdrivers is useful for disassembling the product. With the help of a marker and a tape measure, marking will be carried out, and paints and varnishes will help protect the furniture from negative influences and change its appearance. When choosing a paint and varnish composition, it is better to give preference to a well-known brand. Before restoring an old table with your own hands, you need to make sure that the tools are intact and in working order.

Stages of work

The restoration process consists of several important steps:

  1. Selection and purchase of all necessary consumables. It is better to do all this in advance.
  2. Preliminary repair of the table. In the case of the restoration of the desk, moving parts are lubricated, drawers and shelves are repaired.
  3. Identification and elimination of major defects for further restoration.
  4. Removal of old varnish.
  5. Application of protective solutions.
  6. Surface decoration using various techniques.

The last step is the most interesting. It gives you the opportunity to realize your creative potential and bring the most creative ideas to life.

preliminary repair

At the preliminary stage of restoration, furniture is restored and repaired. Start by assessing her condition. You need to carefully examine the wooden table, see if the legs are broken, check the integrity of all the details. A stable structure should not tilt and creak under load. Table repair begins with a search for visible defects. Next, you need to disassemble it into its component parts. If the plywood that acts as the bottom in the boxes has delaminated, it must be dismantled and these parts replaced with new ones.

The presence of small bubbles on the surface of chipboard or MDF indicates that the veneer peeling process has begun.

Moving parts are lubricated with machine oil, if necessary, the mechanism itself is repaired. If corrosion has appeared on the metal parts, they must be replaced with new ones. Outdated unfashionable fittings can be changed to a more modern one.

Poorly fastened elements are connected with glue. To make the table more stable, it is necessary to replace its legs with wider ones. Not everyone knows how to restore a table if it is loosened. You can strengthen the product with corner ties.

To repair the table-book, it is necessary to lubricate all movable joints with machine oil.

Primary processing

Many are interested in how to update an old coffee table if there is a long-cracked layer of varnish on its surface. In this case, it is necessary to remove the old coating in order to apply a new one in its place. This work is carried out mechanically (manually using a spatula) or special chemical compounds are used, which are also called washes. The mechanical method involves the use of a grinding machine. But if it's not there, no big deal. You can replace it with medium-grain sandpaper. The main thing during machining is not to damage the product. This is especially true for old wood. To avoid this, the movements should be directed along the wood fibers.

The remains of the old coating can also be removed using chemicals. They are applied with a small soft brush to the surface of the furniture. Active substances quickly dissolve all existing layers of varnish or paint. After 30 minutes, this solution can be safely removed with an ordinary sponge. After removing the varnish, the wood is impregnated with protective mixtures. This is an extremely important stage in the restoration of a wooden table, which will subsequently protect the product from damage.

When choosing between mechanical and chemical methods, it is worth considering that when it comes to rare and expensive furniture, it is best to use a wash. It is commercially available as a liquid, gel, or powder. All these mixtures are absolutely safe and will not spoil the structure of the tree.

To remove small cracks, chips and scratches, the following operations must be carried out:

  1. Sweep dust out of all cracks.
  2. Fill cracks with wood putty.
  3. Remove excess putty and level the surface.
  4. Wait for complete drying and clean the treated areas with fine sandpaper.

These operations will help remove all defects from the surface of the table.

When restoring a coffee table with your own hands, sometimes you have to deal with the fact that there are depressions or even holes on its surface. In this case, you can use epoxy or fill the recesses with a mixture of fine sawdust and glue.

Coating with decorative composition

Before proceeding with the final finishing, it is necessary to carry out priming. You need to apply the composition in stages - first on the countertop, then on the frame of the product. In the work, you can use both acrylic and alkyd primers. Processing a table made of wood consists of several stages:

  1. The selected composition is applied to a clean surface and smeared with a spatula, the mixture should be distributed in an even layer.
  2. After the first layer has dried, a second layer must be applied.
  3. When all layers are dry, remove roughness by sanding.

In this way, you can cover not only tables. Any wooden surface (chairs, chests of drawers, cabinets) needs an additional primer coat before painting. After priming, it is necessary to paint. This can be simple brushing or decorative application of paint through a tulle or stencil. The last step will be varnishing or waxing. Often, varnish is used in the restoration of the kitchen table with your own hands. Wax is used mainly for furniture that is constantly under the influence of external factors. It perfectly protects from the sun, moisture and various damages.

When choosing tools for application, you need to remember that low-quality brushes can leave villi that, after drying, will be impossible to remove.

The varnish is applied with a brush, the drying time is from 18 to 36 hours. Wax can be hard or watery. The liquid is immediately ready for use, and the solid must first be melted. Before updating the kitchen table with your own hands with a protective layer of wax, you need to prepare a dense brush or cotton swab. All these manipulations are preferably carried out in the open air, since the compositions used contain toxic substances that adversely affect health.

Quite often there is a need to mask minor visual defects or just want to change the boring color of the old table. To do this, before applying the varnish composition, you can cover the desired areas with paint.

Creative ways to upgrade

Many people are puzzled over how to update old tables that look bleak. There are many ways to decorate the countertop of a kitchen table or any other:

  1. Painting. Very easy restoration. Different types of paints are used, for example, acrylic, alkyd or enamel.
  2. Art painting. Quite a complicated way that requires drawing skills. You can use a stencil, it makes the task much easier.
  3. Craquelure. This method is a decoration by applying a finish that imitates an old cracked coating. This is done using special chemical mixtures.
  4. Mosaic. You can make it with smalt, but it is very expensive. It is better to use broken tiles. For gluing use universal glue.
  5. Decorative film. It is glued after polishing and cleaning the surface. With this technique, an old coffee table can be turned into a trendy piece of furniture.
  6. Pasting with decorative tape. After polishing and treatment with alcohol, adhesive tape is glued. Then the pasting place is rolled with a special roller.
  7. Processing with epoxy resin. This solution turns into plastic after application to the surface. With its help, decoration occurs with the addition of a variety of patterns.
  8. Applying varnish or stain. This is the easiest way to decorate, which even a beginner can handle. Moreover, it will preserve the natural texture of the wood flooring, as well as provide protection from moisture and fading. Most often, this method updates the old kitchen table.
  9. Painting through tulle. To do this, you need to find a piece of old tulle. Next, you need to paint the table white. After the paint has dried, apply tulle to the surface of the furniture in such a way that the arrangement of the pattern looks as beautiful as possible. Fix the fabric so that it does not move during painting. Then you need to take a can and start staining. After 15 minutes, the tulle can be removed.
  10. Gilding. With the help of a transfer sheet, you can achieve a beautiful gilded effect. This operation is carried out in the same way as staining, using a stencil.

To get the effect of a pleasant dull shine, a matting solution can be applied on top of the varnish.

In order to restore a coffee table with your own hands, it is best to use mosaic decoration, painting, burning or varnishing. To "revive" a faded desk, you can choose staining or varnishing. For the kitchen table, there are quite a few ways to decorate: dyeing through lace or tulle, decorating with ceramic tiles or using decoupage.

Garden tables are best decorated with tiles or mosaics, especially if they are outdoors. If you need to decorate a table for children's creativity, you can be creative and paint each leg in a different color - you get a bright and cheerful piece of furniture.

Summing up all the recommendations, it is safe to say that the restoration of outdated furniture can be done independently. Anyone who has ever held tools in their hands can turn an awkward, shabby table into a real work of art. Of course, this will take time and patience, but the result is worth it.
