How to properly paint a door. Wooden door coating technology, work steps and recommendations for choosing paint colors

In order to paint wooden doors with high quality, it is necessary to understand that this procedure does not imply saving time and material. All work must be carried out initially correctly, in compliance with all stages. Only such a position allows you to transform an old canvas or give the desired look to new details. All nuances must be calculated in advance to eliminate unpleasant consequences.

To obtain the desired result, as well as to create a reliable and durable coating, it is necessary to choose the right paint for wooden doors. It should be noted that there are two main compositions that are used for such work - varnish and paint. In this case, both substances can be used together.

Each coloring composition has its own characteristics:

  1. Varnish. Currently, there are several main varieties of this material: colored, glossy and matte. It should be borne in mind that such compositions do not allow hiding surface defects. That is, the structure of the wood remains visible, which significantly limits the scope. Lacquer is an excellent option when it comes to new elements that do not have traces of preparation (putty, putty). If it is assumed that work will be done on finishing old doors, then the varnish is used as a protective coating, but is not the basis. It is important to pay attention to the composition of the material: it can be solvent or oil based. The first option is better not to use for woodworking, it can cause damage to the wood.
Lacquer is used not only to create a decorative coating, but also creates a protective layer.

On a note! Many masters advise choosing polyurethane varnish. It has sufficient stability and strength, which is a very important feature for such events.

  2. Dye. This composition is distinguished by the fact that it allows you to choose the desired shade that is suitable for a particular interior. It is important to consider that painting a wooden door can be done with materials that give a glossy, matte and translucent effect. When choosing a paint, you should immediately determine the composition of the material: the base should be oil or alcohol. A good solution can be considered nitro paint, which has excellent characteristics and makes it possible to paint the door white. But it is important to consider that this composition has a pungent odor that disappears in only a few days.

When choosing a paint for a door, it is necessary to ensure that the container with the material has the inscription “For wood”

  3. There is another interesting substance - wax oil. This product allows you to give the surface a very interesting glossy (silk) shade. Troop-based oil compositions have different shades, which allows them to be successfully combined.

On a note! It is important to consider that applying wax oil is not the easiest process. To achieve the desired coverage, you need to correctly distribute the material.

So what is the best way to paint an interior wooden door? There is a lot of advice about this, but alkyd enamel is considered the most preferred material. Such a colorful composition has excellent qualities that are perfect for this type of work. First, it is low cost. It is much less than other materials. Secondly, the substance lays down quite evenly, which is necessary for home use. Thirdly, the paint is odorless and has a wide range of shades.

The principle of staining wooden doors

Do-it-yourself painting of wooden doors is divided into several stages, which are interconnected. It should be borne in mind that any negligence will immediately affect the final form of wood parts.

It all starts with the preparation of the right tools and materials. No special equipment is required for operation.

You need to purchase the following:

  • Screwdriver (set of screwdrivers). It will be needed in order to remove all unnecessary details from the canvas.
  • Sandpaper of different grits. The product is convenient to use if you install it on a bar. It is possible to use a grinding machine.
  • . Such a composition can be made independently.
  • Primer. It is used to increase the adhesion of materials.
  • Spatulas. You need a small tool to get the job done.
  • Roller and a set of brushes of different widths. The roller should not be foam rubber.

Materials and tools needed to paint the door

On a note! It is preferable to use an airbrush to apply the paint composition. It allows you to complete the work in a short time, distributing the material with the highest quality. But it requires special conditions for application. It is important to consider that it is irrational to purchase such equipment for one-time work.

Preparatory stage

How to paint wooden doors qualitatively? To obtain the actual desired coverage, special attention must be paid to the preparation process.

On a note! Many mistakenly believe that when buying a new, unpainted door, no preparatory measures are needed. In fact, it all depends on the specific situation, so you should check with the seller: what has already been done. But it would be much better to assess the situation yourself.

Painting wood doors

After the previous manipulations are fully completed, you can proceed to the main procedures. They are:

Painting a wooden door allows you to extend the life of this structure, which is necessary in the house. You can do all the work yourself, which will save money.

If your wooden door has lost its appeal, then it is not necessary to replace it with a new one. Timely painting of the structure will refresh its appearance and allow it to be used for many more years. A big plus of the procedure is that it can be done by hand. The work is not difficult, especially for a person who is used to doing construction and repair work on his own.

What to paint. Choice

This is the very first question that needs to be resolved before starting work. it is quite clear that the purpose of painting a wooden door is to save the budget. But still, cheap paint a priori cannot be of high quality. Savings in this case can turn into unnecessary expenses.

All modern paints that are suitable for painting wooden structures are divided into two types:

  1. Transparent. This is a varnish or impregnation that preserves the appearance and structure of the tree. Thus, using a transparent paint, you will preserve the natural appeal of natural wood and protect the door from moisture and sunlight. Lacquering is most often used for doors made from natural wood. To hide their natural beauty. You can choose a clear or tinted varnish, which gives the surface a certain shade.

When buying varnish, give preference to a quick-drying composition. It is easier to apply, safe for humans and dries quickly.

  2. Opaque. These are already real paints that completely cover the surface, not allowing you to distinguish the texture and color of the wood.

Usually, opaque paints are used to reconstruct the door leaf, which, in turn, are also different.

  • Nitro paint. After drying, this paint looks very attractive, the assortment includes a huge palette of various shades. During operation, nitro paint is characterized by very high strength and abrasion resistance. The main disadvantage of the material is its toxicity. Work should be carried out using personal protective equipment in a room that will be constantly ventilated. If you want to paint the door with nitro paint, then you will need to leave the apartment for a while and return only when the paint is completely dry and the smell disappears.
  • Alkyd enamel. Not as toxic as nitro paint, but still not recommended for use with allergy sufferers or small children living in the house. The coating after drying will be durable and wear-resistant. In addition, it is an inexpensive paint, which also dries quickly. But an unpleasant odor can be observed for a long time after treatment.
  • Acrylic enamel. Ideal for painting wooden interior doors. They are made on a water-dispersion basis, therefore they do not harm health. This paint is easy to use, as it fits perfectly on the tree. There is no smell after staining, so acrylic enamel can even be used to paint doors in children's rooms. But in terms of strength, it is significantly inferior to other compositions. That's why when using acrylic paint, you should also take care of buying acrylic varnish. The paint itself is more expensive, and the use of varnish also affects the final cost of finishing.

In addition to the type of paint, it is also necessary to choose its color. Designers give some advice on this matter:

  1. A bright door will give the room coziness and comfort. Dark will create an atmosphere of luxury, looks elegant and stylish.
  2. If there is white furniture in the room, then the same white interior door will look harmonious with it.
  3. A house trimmed with wood requires wooden doors. Do not cover them with opaque paints, use varnish or impregnation.
  4. When choosing a shade, look at the color of the walls. The door should not merge with the wall, its color should be either lighter or darker.

Now bright juicy colors and delicate pastel shades are in fashion.

Required materials and tools

Before starting work, it is important to take care of the availability of the necessary materials and tools.

Except for the paint and/or varnish you chose to paint the wooden door. You definitely need to buy putty, primer and thinner.

Prepare the following names from the tool:

  • Several paint brushes of different thicknesses, a roller
  • Putty knife
  • A special paint tray (you can do without it, but it greatly simplifies the process)
  • Gloves and other personal protective equipment
  • Rags or rags
  • masking tape
  • Sandpaper
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Four stools or other devices for placing a door on them

Preparatory work

Before painting the door, it must be removed from the hinges and laid in such a way that it is convenient to process it. For this purpose, four stools of the same height are suitable.

If you paint the door with alkyd or nitro paint, then the work is best done on the street or at least on the balcony.

  1. Remove all hardware from the door. If there are non-removable parts, wrap them with masking tape. The lock, if any, also wrap with tape.
  2. Remove the old coating from the wooden canvas. After removing the paint, putty and primer, only wood should remain. To perform the work, you can use a grinder or sandpaper. There are also special washes for paint.
  3. Sand the rough surface and vacuum.
  4. If there are significant flaws on the surface of the door leaf, treat them with putty. After the material has completely dried, sand the door again.

The door is ready for painting.

How to paint a wooden door with your own hands. Step-by-step instruction

The process of painting a wooden door consists of several stages. There are some features that depend on the model of the door and the decorative finish of the door leaf. The material of the wood from which the canvas is made also affects. But in general, all work is approximately the same and is performed according to the following algorithm.

  1. The door leaf is painted in a horizontal position, so it should be laid on stools. Hardware must be protected. If there are windows on the door, then they should also be closed.
  2. First of all, small details are processed. They need to be painted over with a small narrow brush.
  3. If the area of the door leaf allows, then the first layer of paint is applied using a roller. Coloring is done in one direction.
  4. The second layer is applied only after the first layer is completely dry. Staining is done in a direction perpendicular to the first.
  5. The third layer is applied only if a brighter and more saturated color is required.

If you chose transparent varnish as the paint, then after the preparatory work, the algorithm will be as follows.

  1. Primer. It is carried out with diluted varnish. It is necessary to dilute the composition with water or a solvent, this will be indicated on the package. The primer layer is applied exclusively with a brush along the wood fibers.

When applying varnish, the brush must not be torn off the surface and must not be stopped. Otherwise, a stain will form on the canvas.

  2. Sanding. Using fine-grained sandpaper, remove all irregularities from the surface of the canvas.
  3. Applying varnish. Also, using a brush, apply a second coat of varnish on the door in the opposite direction to the first.
  • Do not neglect the preparatory work.
  • Veneered doors can delaminate, glue them with special glue before painting. You can paint the door only after the glue is completely dry.
  • The door frame is difficult to remove, so the staining is done directly in the doorway. Cover nearby walls with masking tape.
  • The paint roller should be wrung out well to avoid streaks. If they nevertheless formed, then blot this place with a sponge and once again walk over it with a roller.
  • Details of the door leaf and door frame, which are in contact with each other, should be painted in 3-4 layers.
  • Before staining, prepare the brushes - comb them out and hold them in water for several hours. This will prevent hair from getting on the paintwork and make the pile softer.
  • Remove the masking tape immediately after you have finished the work, without waiting for the paint to dry.

Painting a wooden door with your own hands is not at all difficult, but it is important to follow all the recommendations exactly and follow the advice of experts. Then you will not have to repaint the door in the coming months, and the coating will serve you for a very long time.

Types of paints

Currently, there is a huge selection of paints for painting wood. They are qualitatively divided into transparent and opaque. The first option is used if it is necessary to preserve the natural color of the wood and the visibility of the fiber structure. These include stains and impregnations that protect wood from insects and fungi.

Note!

They can give a slight tonality to the natural color, making the appearance more presentable.

The second option - opaque paint is more in demand, because it allows you to achieve maximum compliance with the interior design of the room. These can be enamels and compositions based on acrylic, polyurethane, alkyds and oils.

What paint to choose?

For interior work, acrylic enamels are most often used. They allow you to get the optimal viscosity for ease of use with a brush: it spreads well, forming a thin uniform layer and is able to maintain color vibrancy throughout the entire service life. It does not have a pungent odor and therefore even allergy sufferers can dye. Paint for exterior doors is selected based on the temperature characteristics of the climate, air humidity and rainfall. In such cases, alkyd paint is simply irreplaceable, as it increases resistance to temperature extremes, moisture and sunlight. Coloring is able to dry much faster than other compounds. However, when working with it, personal respiratory protection should be used because it is toxic.

Hardware needs to be removed before painting.

Preparatory work

Before painting, it is advisable to remove the door from the hinges and place it on a horizontal stable surface. It is advisable to lay it with paper or oilcloth so that dirt and dust do not get on the canvas. Then, using an industrial hair dryer with a wide nozzle, they rip off the old paint to wood. The old paint is heated with a hot stream of air until it swells, after which it is easily combed off. In hard-to-reach places, the nozzle is removed and the area is heated, after which the paint layer is removed with a knife or a fine one. Upon completion of the work, grinding is carried out with emery or.

Remove the door or not?

It is convenient to paint the doors in the removed position, since the paint does not drip, no streaks form, there is access to all cracks and inconvenient places. It is possible to assess the condition of the canvas more objectively and, if necessary, replace the problematic parts. In addition, there will be no pungent smell of solvent, coloring composition and varnish in the room. The time spent on dismantling is fully justified, since financial resources are saved for painting doors that are obviously unusable, and it will also be possible to carry out work in any convenient place. However, if the canvas is new, and painting is carried out only in order to change the color shade, then you can paint it right on the spot, having previously fixed the open position of the door.

Irregularities need to be patched

We close up small defects in the canvas

Before painting a wooden door, you need to hide possible defects, such as cracks, chips and places, pest infestations. Putty is taken and applied to problem areas with a spatula in small quantities. Then it is carefully leveled. After drying, grinding is carried out with a "zero". The surface is cleaned with a dry soft cloth to remove dust, and then washed. It should be noted that only small defects can be hidden in this way. In case of rotten areas or serious cracks, it is recommended to make a suitable part from a similar type of wood and replace it.

What primer to use?

Wood is mandatory to improve water resistance, increase adhesion, especially of dense woods, impregnate the outer layer to reduce paint costs. Before painting an old wooden door with opaque paint, alkyd primers and alkyd-based compounds diluted with water are applied.

Note!

The color of the primer should differ from the main color by a tone or semitone towards the light side, so as not to affect the outer coating.

Under the transparent layer, oil- and water-based primers are used, which have disinfectants, insecticidal and. By color and type, they should have a great affinity with the decorative coating.

Performing a single color painting

The easiest option is to paint the canvas and the box in the same color. The brush must be fluffed before use in order to remove excess hairs and give softness. After that, painting is carried out in three stages. At the first stage, the ends of the door are covered with a layer of paint, starting from the upper corners and ending with the lower, longitudinal movements of the brush. At the second stage, the plane of the canvas is painted from left to right. Then the paint must dry in accordance with the instructions for use. After drying, a second coat of paint is applied in the longitudinal direction from top to bottom. If the paint is partially absorbed, then a third layer can be applied to obtain a rich color.

Application of several tones

For interiors with complex decor elements, it may be necessary to apply several layers of different colors. They take adhesive tape and seal the entire surface, which should not be covered by the main color. After drying, glue the painted parts and apply paint to the remaining places. It is not enough to paint the front door to the children's room in several colors and you have to create complex drawings. First, stencils are made, with an adhesive composition applied on the reverse side. Staining is carried out in the main color, and when the paint dries, a stencil is installed and painted in additional tones. The disadvantage of this method is the appearance of the color of the substrate to the outside. Therefore, such patterns are selected so that the background is lighter and the subsequent layers darker. This option is non-standard for painting wooden canvases, since they have a natural pattern, but is the simplest implementation of a complex pattern to do it yourself. The sequence of work is as follows:

  1. The canvas is painted completely yellow by the method of monophonic painting in one or two layers.
  2. With a brush, liquid soap is evenly applied to all surfaces.
  3. A layer of dark paint is applied, imitating wood fibers.
  4. Soap is washed off.

Conclusion

Before painting an interior wooden door, it is necessary to determine the operating conditions, requirements for surface quality and color. But before that, the front of the canvas and the box should be processed accordingly. This will guarantee the successful completion of the work and significantly increase the life of the door.

In any apartment, in any house it is impossible to do without doors. They may have different purposes. There are doors separating the bathroom, toilet, balconies and loggias from the main living space.

In order to avoid smudges when painting the doors, they must be laid in a horizontal position.

Interior doors divide the living area into separate rooms. Old doors usually have a very strong canvas and a high-quality frame. Some products are made of precious woods. But a thick layer of paint accumulated over the years significantly spoils the original appearance of the doors. You can update them in many ways, including the correct coating with new paint.

Stages of painting a wooden door with wax.

With the help of modern innovative materials, an old wooden door can be given a completely new look. Any home master can do this on his own. You only need to know some of the features of the use of modern paints and varnishes, follow the painting technology. How correctly and what finishing materials to use, what tool to use?

In the vast majority of cases, all doors in a dwelling, except for the entrance doors, are made of solid wood or using modern materials that imitate wood. What paint is recommended for these doors?

Choice of door paint

There are no difficulties in choosing a paint, but due to their ignorance, people often buy something completely different from what is actually required. Paintwork materials can be transparent. Special pigments are added to them, showing the structure of the tree. Opaque formulations are often used. These include materials based on organic solvents. These are well-known oil, alkyd and other paints.

The most common paint today is alkyd enamel. It has a very affordable price, has a high coating strength, a rich assortment of colors. Its only drawback is a sharp unpleasant odor that persists for about 48 hours. Therefore, it is recommended to carry out all work with paint on the street. To do this, remove the door from the hinges. Another option is to ensure that there are no strangers in the room.

If for some reason it is impossible to fulfill these conditions, then acrylic enamel should be used. It also has a wide color palette, but practically does not smell at all. The dried layer of such paint does not have special strength. For this reason, it is usually coated with acrylic varnish, which gives a more attractive appearance to the product and protects it from various mechanical damage. The negative sides of acrylic dyes include their high cost and matte surface.

The most resistant material for painting wooden interior doors is nitro-paint and nitro-lacquer. The dried layer has a very durable surface. The material is quite toxic, can cause allergies, and therefore requires careful handling. It is desirable that there are no people in the room while working with these materials. The painter must provide himself with personal protective equipment, especially a mask or respirator.

Tools for the job

To paint doors, the following tools are needed: a roller, brushes, rags, gloves, and so on.

The paint has been chosen - now you need to take care of the tools.

To complete the work on painting a wooden door, you will need:

  • paint brushes;
  • paint roller;
  • small spatula;
  • bath for paint;
  • emery skin;
  • masking tape.

Painting with alkyd enamel

The work is carried out in several stages.

Stage 1. For high-quality painting, it is recommended to remove the wooden door from its hinges. If it is not removed, then smudges of paint may form on a vertical surface. Using a sandpaper and a spatula, remove the old coating. Wash the door leaf thoroughly and inspect it carefully. Carefully putty all cracks and chips. Dry the door, sand it, wipe off the dust and prime the surface.

It can be very difficult to remove several layers of old paint. You can soften it with a building hair dryer. You can use a blowtorch. The paint is heated with hot air or flame until bubbles appear and removed with a spatula. If there are glass in the doors, they must be removed along with the fittings.

When working with high temperature sources, precautions must be taken. If you keep an open flame on the paint layer for more than the allotted time, you can get scorched wood, ignition and fire. There should be no flammable or combustible substances near the place of work.

You can remove the old paint coating from the canvas of wooden doors by dissolving it with chemicals that are available in the form of powders, liquids and gels. They are sold in different packaging: bottled, packaged in aerosol cans.

These products are quite versatile and dissolve well oil, vinyl paints, nitrocellulose and alkyd compounds. The composition is applied to the surface with a roller, brush or spray and kept for 5-20 minutes. The exact exposure time is indicated on the packaging of a particular product.

A thick layer may require re-coating. Loose paint is easily removed from the surface of the door leaf with a simple spatula. After removing old paint, dark spots may open on the surface of a wooden door. They can be lightened with chlorine bleach, which is diluted with water before use. The proportions of bleach dilution are 1:3.

Stage 2. The canvas prepared for painting is laid on a horizontal surface. It must first be covered with plastic wrap. For this, a table, workbench, floor is suitable. Glasses are sealed with masking tape. First, the panels are painted with a brush, then the protruding elements, and lastly, the door leaf is painted over with a roller.

If alkyd paint is applied in two layers, then its consumption will be from 40 to 80 g per m2.

Stage 3. The door leaf can be impregnated with a tinting compound. In its quality, paint is used, the basis of which are natural oils. The newly applied layer should be rubbed with a rubber spatula about 10 times. The composition is absorbed into the wood fibers, changing the color of the door.

Instead of a spatula, you can use a sponge. It is dipped in paint and with strong pressure is carried out along the fibers along the surface of the door leaf. Rub the paint for 2-3 minutes. The disadvantage of this method is the cost of a large amount of time.

Stage 4. Another finishing option is as follows. You need to take the paint of the desired color and liquid soap. First, a layer of paint is applied to the canvas with a brush or roller. After that, the door should dry well. The dried layer of paint is covered with liquid soap. A second layer of paint is applied over the soap, which can be replaced with yacht varnish. With all methods of painting, it is recommended to remove all fittings from the door panels. If this is not possible, then they are sealed with film, paper, masking tape.

The color of the doors the owners of the premises choose depending on their preferences. But there are certain recommendations in this regard:

When painting a wooden door with alkyd enamel, it is necessary that the surface is completely dry, otherwise the paint may peel and peel off later.

  1. The white bedroom set goes well with the same color door, decorated with golden panels.
  2. In a wooden house, a door made of natural wood treated with oil impregnation looks better.
  3. Under lacquered furniture in dark shades, you need to choose a door tinted with dark impregnation. From above it should be covered with a colorless varnish.
  4. For antique antique furniture, the most successful choice is an artificially aged wooden door.
  5. To create a healthy environment in the house, it is better to use water-based paints. They are odorless and do not cause allergic reactions in humans and pets.
  6. Sadolin MASTER LUX AQUA, Tikkurila paints have proven themselves as quick-drying, elastic, moisture-resistant materials. Of particular note is the Wood Dye paint. It is designed specifically for wooden doors. It has 11 shades, when mixed, you can get any color imitating natural wood.

There are many ways to update an interior wooden door. Painting of canvases is used, pasting with special photo wallpapers depicting various subjects. The main thing is to paint in compliance with the technology and some precautions.

There are a huge amount of materials for performing such work on sale.

You just need to choose the right composition.

Sections of the article:

Thanks to modern innovative materials, you can give an old wooden door a completely new look, in line with fashion trends. This is easy to do on your own at home. The main thing is to follow the technology. In the article we will talk about how to paint a wooden door and what materials and tools you will need for this.

Before staining

When the door is still new and has not been painted, it is necessary to decide whether to leave the natural beauty of natural wood visible or cover it with a solid opaque coat of paint. How exactly to paint a wooden door - the choice of materials for work will depend on this decision.

Paint selection

If it is decided to preserve the natural color of the wood, there is no need to buy paint. In this case, you will need oil impregnation or clear varnish. They brighten up the color of the wood. Tinted varnish or stain will help to give the array new color shades.

If you want to update an existing varnished surface, you need to purchase a putty to match the color of the array. It is useful for leveling the surface of the door leaf after removing the old varnish.

For opaque painting of wooden surfaces, there are many types of enamels: alkyd, oil, polyurethane, acrylic, perchlorovinyl. For painting bath doors, it is better to choose polyurethane paint: it has a high resistance to negative external influences.

What is the best paint for interior wooden doors? For non-professional craftsmen, experts recommend choosing water-based acrylic paints. They have an optimal consistency for working with a brush and spread well. Such paints have high water-repellent qualities, good drying speed and resistance to temperature fluctuations.

Tool selection

For painting, you will need a narrow panel brush and roller. With a brush, a paneled canvas and all kinds of decorative slats on the door are painted over. The roller is useful for painting large and even surfaces of the door leaf. You can buy a paint sprayer, but it is desirable to have some experience to work with it. In addition, it is unprofitable to purchase this tool for painting one or two doors.

Coloring

For those who have seen how a master paints wooden doors, it may seem that there is absolutely nothing complicated about this. However, a beginner, in order to achieve a good result, must strictly follow all the instructions and the procedure for performing work.

It is important to learn how to paint the doors evenly, without the formation of frozen smudges or stains under the varnish.

Often staining is carried out in several stages. First, impregnation is used, it happens with or without a tinting effect. After that, a decorative coating is applied.

How to paint a wooden door without applying paint and varnish products? In this case, the impregnation or stain must be applied in at least three layers in order to protect the surface from external influences as much as possible. More layers are applied to achieve the desired color shade.

Do not forget that the jambs with a lintel also need to be updated. Preparation for their staining is carried out in the same sequence and with the same tools as for the door leaf. Since it does not make sense to dismantle and take the door frame outside before painting, it is important to take care of protecting the flooring from paint ingress, as well as to provide fresh air to the room for good ventilation.

Products applied to the surface may not be compatible. For example, a varnished door cannot be impregnated with drying oil. In this case, only stain will do. It is also important to remember that all alkyd resin based paints can only be applied to a dry surface, otherwise the paint will peel off.

Door leaf preparation

In order to paint the door with the highest quality, it is removed from the hinges and placed in a horizontal position on the goats, two stools or a desktop. It is best to place the removed door outdoors. So it dries faster and in the living room there will be less smell of paint.

If for some reason it is impossible to remove the door, you need to block the canvas with wedges so that the panel brush can easily reach all the necessary elements of the door. This is also necessary so that the door does not accidentally close before it is completely dry.

It is advisable to dismantle the fittings. If this is not possible, close the handles and hinges tightly with metal foil. Fix the lock mechanism in the “open” position and close it with tape.

Surface cleaning

For those who are not professional painters, one of the most important questions will be how to properly remove old paint from a wooden door? The question is really important, because the final result will largely depend on the quality of this process. Therefore, special attention should be paid to preparing the door for painting.

Before a new painting, it is necessary to remove all old layers of paint, primer and putty from the surface of the door to the wood itself. Such work is quite easy to do with a grinder. A more time-consuming way is to use a home-made device, consisting of a bar of a hand-friendly shape and medium-grained sandpaper glued to the working surface. The most effective is the use of a building hair dryer. It heats the paint, after which it is easy to remove with a spatula. Another way is to wash off the old paint with special means. It is not complicated, but costly - such funds are not cheap.

Grinding

After that, an initial grinding is performed, which eliminates small dents, scratches and paint residues. Here you can also use a grinder or medium-grain sandpaper.

Next, the surface is leveled with putty: large dents, cracks, crevices, etc. are smeared. Deep dents can be covered with auto-filler, which does not include fiberglass. It is important not to forget that putty is selected under the transparent coating to match the natural wood grain.

After complete drying, secondary grinding is performed. First, an abrasive is used as in the previous stage, then a fine-grained analogue. The treated surface must be vacuumed, wiped with a damp cloth and dried well.

Sometimes, after removing the old paint, it turns out that the solid wood still looks good enough and you can not apply an opaque coating to it. In this case, it is recommended to bleach it with a mixture of chlorine bleach and water in a ratio of 1:3, dry it well, and then varnish it.

Coloring

To understand how to properly paint a particular wooden door, it is important to understand its structure. The most common types of doors for painting are panel (completely smooth) and paneled (with recesses and, possibly, slats). It is correct to paint the panel door in three steps. It is better to use a roller, it ensures uniform application and does not leave hairs.

Painting techniques

You need to start from the upper left corner of the door leaf and head to the right side. Follow this direction until the end of staining, then dry in accordance with the instructions on the paint. Staining for the second time is done in the longitudinal direction. The last coloring starts from the upper right corner, opposite to the first stage of painting.

The paneled door is being painted with a brush. Before starting work, the brush must be fluffed so that all loosely fixed hairs fall out without getting into the paint. It stains all the recesses in the canvas. It is important to ensure that there is no overabundance of paint. After that, the roller enters the work and painting is carried out in accordance with the above technological steps for a panel door.

Staining with stain

How else can you paint an interior wooden door? If you paint with a stain, then the door prepared for painting must first be slightly moistened. In this case, the dye, which has a liquid consistency, will lie flat.

The first stain is applied along the fibers, the second - in the transverse direction, the third is similar to the first. If the canvas is not removed from the hinges, you need to start painting from the bottom so that the dye drops do not fall on the unpainted areas, otherwise it will be difficult to achieve an even tone. The same goes for the door frame. This is true for surface preparation for varnish or other transparent coating. If the doors end up being coated with an opaque compound, the occasional drip of stain will not damage the final appearance of the doors.

Water-soluble stain allows wood fibers that have absorbed moisture to straighten out. To keep the surface of the doors smooth, after the first layer has dried, the doors are sanded with a sandpaper, then they are cleaned of dust and stained a second time. The wooden surface during the application of the dye to it is several tones darker than the dried one. This must be taken into account if there is a desire to achieve a specific color shade.

Alcohol stain does not stimulate the straightening of the fibers, so it is not necessary to grind the doors after applying it. Such a stain dries very quickly, but water-soluble is considered safer.

wood look

If desired, painting can imitate MDF or plywood-covered doors under natural wood. There are several ways to decorate like this.

Option one

The door leaf is painted with light gray, light beige or yellow paint and left to dry completely according to the instructions of the manufacturer of the coloring composition. With a wide brush, the entire surface of the door is treated with liquid soap. A layer of darker paint is applied, and the liquid soap that protrudes to the surface is washed off.

Option two

For its implementation, you will need a special brush, which can be purchased at any hardware store. The soft fibers of the door covering are processed with this brush. Then the surface is painted with two different color (wood-like) dyes. Changes in the structure of the canvas, made by brushing, will spontaneously give curls that create the illusion of wood.

After complete drying, the surface is sanded and varnished. In a similar way, it will be possible to restore furniture.

Doing this job will not be too easy, so it is recommended that you first practice on another similar surface, and not on the door itself.
