Maximum impact energy- the main characteristic of perforators, which determines its capabilities and performance. The greater the impact energy, the larger the drill or bit can be used and the faster the chiselling will occur.


For home use - drilling holes for dowels and anchor bolts - a light, low-power hammer drill with an impact energy of 1-2 J will suffice.

If the puncher is planned to be used for chiselling and installing socket boxes, more impact energy will be required: 2.5 - 3.5 J.

For drilling through holes of large length and diameter; for cutting passages brick walls you will need a fairly powerful tool with an impact force of 4-10 J.


The maximum impact force of 10-30 J is required when dismantling walls and making passages in load-bearing concrete walls.

After selection necessary strength impact, attention should be paid to power- it must correspond to the impact energy:


- for a maximum impact energy of 1.5 J optimal power will be 600 watts;
- 2-2.5 J - 700-800 W;
- 3.5 J - 900 W
- 5-15 J - 1200-1500 W
- from 10 J - 1500 W and above

If the power is much lower than optimal, this does not mean that the manufacturer is trying to mislead you, and the impact force is too high. Slow-speed rotary hammers with pneumatic impact mechanism can have high impact force with relatively low power. The capabilities of such punchers will be the same as those of more powerful ones, but the performance will be lower.

Performance is also affected by the frequency of strokes. The more maximum number of hits per minute, the faster the hole will be drilled. High impact frequency (3500-7500 beats/min) allows low power perforators with low impact force to have acceptable performance. Conversely, perforators with high impact force high frequency not needed, they give out 2000-3500 beats / min.

Drill attachment type(cartridge). The most common options are SDS-Max and SDS-Plus.

Cartridge SDS Quick used only in compact bosch rotary hammers. The tool shank has a diameter of 8 mm, the maximum diameter of concrete drills with such a shank is 10 mm.

Operating modes.


In mode chiselling the cartridge performs only reciprocating movements. The presence of this mode is necessary for chiseling and cutting holes with a flat chisel. drilling, especially deep holes, in this mode is not recommended, it will most likely lead to jamming of the drill.

Mode impact drilling used for drilling holes in concrete, porcelain stoneware, cast and natural stone. For household hammers, this is the most popular mode.

Mode drilling(without impact) may be required for making holes in brick, cinder block or aerated concrete - in similar materials hammer drilling can break the hole. The presence of this mode on a tool with a replaceable cartridge allows you to replace the cartridge with a cam cartridge and use the hammer drill as a drill.


The use of an adapter from SDS to a cam chuck for the same purpose is hardly justified - the SDS connection allows significant play, the adapter with the drill will hang out, good quality drilling cannot be achieved. Therefore, if you intend to use a rotary hammer as a drill, you should choose a tool with a quick-change chuck system and an additional quick-change chuck in the kit.

Some models are equipped with a screwdriver mode - it is similar to the drilling mode, but with a low rotational speed of the chuck. In this mode, you can tighten large diameter screws. But the hammers are not supplied with a reverse and a disengaging clutch (ratchet), so a full-fledged screwdriver will not work. The weight and dimensions of the perforator also do not contribute to its use.

Some models have a Vario-Lock position on the mode switch - in this position of the switch, by turning the chuck manually, you can set the desired position of the bit for subsequent work in chiseling mode.


Device power. The rotary hammer motor consumes high current, so for a long time, rotary hammers remained exclusively a 220 V mains-powered tool. But the development of technology and the creation of batteries capable of delivering a high discharge current for a long time made it possible to start producing cordless rotary hammers. Despite the heavy weight high price and low impact energy, such a tool immediately gained high popularity - because in the absence of power supply it is much easier to use a cordless hammer drill than to carry it with you gasoline generator. Unfortunately, the duration of the operation of rotary hammers from one battery is still low - 1-1.5 hours with optimal load. As the load increases, the operating time can be reduced several times.

Maximum idle speed practically does not affect the speed of concrete drilling in the modes of chiselling and drilling with impact. You should pay attention to this parameter if the hammer drill is supposed to be used as a drill - for confident drilling of metals, you need a large number of idle speeds (from 1200 and above).


Maximum drilling diameter. For ease of choice, many manufacturers give the maximum drilling diameters for wood, metal and concrete. But the drilling depth is not indicated, so these characteristics should be used with caution. For example, some 700-watt rotary hammers have a maximum concrete drilling diameter of 30mm. Yes, it will be possible to drill a hole several centimeters deep with such a 30 mm puncher, but you should not expect to make a through hole in a concrete wall.

Functions reverse allows you to change the direction of rotation of the cartridge and can be very useful when the drill jams. In addition, the use of reverse significantly facilitates the extraction of long drills from the holes. In the screwdriver mode, the presence of a reverse will increase the practicality of the tool and will allow not only to tighten the screws, but also to unscrew them.

Safety clutch prevents the tool from jerking when the drill or bit is jammed. The option is especially important for powerful rotary hammers - in the case of a wedge in the hammer drilling mode without a safety clutch, such a tool is simply impossible to hold in your hands.
