A hand-assembled cultivator is an indispensable assistant. Do-it-yourself cultivator from a bicycle How to make a manual cultivator with your own hands

Sometimes vegetables and fruits are really more profitable to buy in the store. But there is always more confidence in the quality of products grown by one's own hands. In addition, work on the earth increases vitality, if done wisely. But hard physical labor is not always useful, especially for those who are used to working only in the office. In order for spring chores to be pleasant and not too burdensome, it is necessary to acquire the means of small-scale mechanization. You can, of course, buy modern equipment, but it turned out that making, for example, a cultivator with your own hands is quite simple. Check it out.

Tornado - this is the name of a manual cultivator, which can and should be done with your own hands. With such a device resembling a twisted pitchfork, you can forget about the endless battles with weeds. The teeth of the tool pierce the ground at an angle, after which the Tornado must be turned and lifted. To do this, you do not have to make excessive efforts, because instead of a conventional handle, the Tornado has a lever.

The Tornado cultivator is attractive because it is quite easy to use and working with it does not require any significant effort.

This wonderful root remover is good for everyone, but acquaintance with its store price can completely discourage the desire to become its owner. However, there is nothing complicated in this device. The Tornado cultivator can be made independently and even in several different ways.

Spring Steel Tornado

We will need a steel tape 50 cm long, 1-1.5 mm thick and 2 cm wide. For our purpose, it is best to use spring steel. We bend the tape in the form of a loop and attach it to the wooden handle of the tool. The length of the handle is determined depending on the height of the owner: it should be convenient to work with the tool. You can also make a lever, the same as that of a store root remover. The working steel loop should be 20 cm in diameter, which is slightly less than the row spacing. The edges of the loop are sharpened with a file on both sides.

Weeds - pitchforks to the side

If the Tornado looks like a pitchfork, then why not make a manual cultivator with your own hands from this tool familiar to all gardeners? We will buy an ordinary pitchfork in a hardware store and give the teeth of this tool the desired bend with a hammer. In general, the tool should resemble a kind of corkscrew. It is important to take your time and proceed with caution.

For the lever, you need a half-meter piece of plastic pipe. We buy in the store and a plastic handle-nozzle for the handle, which is used for pitchforks or shovels. We cut the tube lengthwise, put it on the handle and fix it with electrical tape so that it does not slip. Now the resulting lever protrudes about 25 cm from the handle on both sides.

It is logical to make the forked part of the Tornado precisely from the pitchfork - a tool that is well known to all gardeners and that everyone has

An important part for the Tornado cultivator is its upper lever part: thanks to the lever, you can do hard work with minimal effort

Option #2: bike-based flat cutter

A cultivator-flat cutter will help to cope with weeds and will greatly facilitate the life of any gardener. Structurally, it is more complicated than the Tornado, but not by much.

To create a flat cutter you need:

  • an old bicycle that no one uses for its intended purpose;
  • a head from a cultivator that has fallen into disrepair or a working surface of a two-handed saw;
  • drill, grinder, wrenches, drills, bolts and so on.

The bike comes with a frame and one wheel. A cultivator head is attached to the frame. In the same capacity, the cutting part of a two-handed saw, a small plow or steel sharp bars made independently can be used. The handles for controlling the mechanism are made of aluminum or steel pipes. A piece of pipe about 2.5 cm in diameter will come in handy as a transverse jumper.

A flat cutter can be made on the basis of an old bicycle, using the working surface of a two-handed saw, ironically called "Friendship", as a cutting part.

There is no particular complexity in the design of this handy tool; it can be made with the right material at hand.

The structure must be rigid, so the nodes are bolted together. A medium size wheel should be secured to the frame with locknuts. It turned out a homemade cultivator, which is very functional and easy to use.

Option #3: disc rotary cultivator

Making a rotary cultivator with your own hands is not at all easy. It requires special skills and good physical preparation. If you have all the listed qualities, you can try to build this tool, which will be much more effective than all the previous ones. With its help, you can not only cultivate, but also harrow the earth, deftly breaking large clods.

As part of a disk rotary cultivator: 1 - disk, 2 - axis. 3 - sleeve, 4 - large bracket, 5 - small bracket, 6 - stem, 7 - pipe, 8 - handle

The working bodies of this cultivator are convex discs, which must be welded to the bushings put on the axle. The axial ends are fixed with cotter pins, which are fixed in a large bracket. After that, a hole is cut in the upper part of this bracket. Handles with a crossbar are fixed in it. A rod 25 cm long and 24 mm in diameter will have to be welded to a small bracket. A 16 mm diameter rod is screwed into it. Part of the rod protrudes above the crossbar.

It is not so easy to give the desired spherical shape to a disk 4 mm thick. To do this, you need to be able to deftly handle the hammer. A strong and precise blow to the center of the disk will transform it into a bowl. It is for this work that the main physical effort will be needed. Special wing nuts, located on the crossbar, regulate the angle of inclination of the spherical discs relative to the direction of movement of the cultivator itself.

Option # 4: industrial meat grinder to help us

All of the above inventory is quite simple. But in the conditions of your own workshop, you can also make a home-made electric cultivator. This once again proves that the possibilities of home craftsmen are almost limitless. To implement this idea, you need an old industrial meat grinder. On its basis, an effective electric gardener's assistant will be built.

An electric cultivator can be made on the basis of a meat grinder for industrial purposes: you get a fairly powerful unit that will last for several years

Everything is not so difficult as it seems, if there is a welding machine and a master who knows how to use it for its intended purpose. Two corners should be attached to the gearbox housing. Pipes with a bend are welded to the corners, which will be used as handles. Between the resulting handles, another piece of pipe is welded - a spacer that gives the structure the desired strength.

The axles for the cultivator wheels will also have to be welded to the corners. The wheels are selected in medium size so that they are easy to use and do not fall into the soil.

The main structural element is the shaft. It will have to be machined from ordinary scrap. The connection is carried out as in the original: in the slot. The meat grinder nozzle is chipped off with a sledgehammer, after which a thick-walled cast iron bushing remains. A blank made from scrap is placed in it, to which lugs in the form of a screw are welded. They are cut from car springs. Other material options for the lugs were used, but they were not viable.

Grousers are located at an angle of 120 degrees. They need to be screwed out in the direction of rotation, then it will be easier for them to enter the ground, and the cultivator itself will be easier to control. The engine of the device is connected according to the "triangle" scheme, start - capacitor. The engine switch is mounted on the handle of the cultivator for ease of operation. The device will last a long time if, before starting work, lubricate the mating of a home-made shaft in a cast-iron bushing with any used oil.

Take a good look at what the lugs should be and how they should be located: the efficiency of the device and its durability depend on this

The quality of tillage depends on the speed of movement of such a cultivator. Fast plowing will be rough, while slow plowing can literally turn the earth into dust.

Option # 5: a child of a bicycle and a washing machine

Do not rush to throw away your old bike and your used washing machine. These things can still come in handy if you want to make a cultivator with your own hands, spending a minimum of money on it.

Now you know how you can make a cultivator yourself. It remains to put your knowledge into practice.

What is a hand cultivator? This is a device for cultivating the land with the help of mechanical devices and hand strength. As diverse as the work of caring for beds and flower beds, there are also many hand tools created by hand and in an industrial way. It is customary to consider cultivators for manual use soil rippers, with a grip of no more than 20 cm, on a long or short handle.

Why do we need cultivators

Even the most technically saturated site will not be well-groomed if the hand of a person with a narrow tool does not walk along it, which will loosen the ground next to plants and flowers, break the soil crust and expose, tear the roots of weeds. This tool is called a hand cultivator and its purpose is:

  • loosen the soil, ridding it of the crust and saturating it with air oxygen;
  • cut furrows for sowing plants, and then sprinkle the new plant;
  • save cultivated plants from the neighborhood of weeds;
  • perform smoothing of the surface with the breaking of lumps - harrow.

These are not all functions of cultivators. A tool with a comfortable grip, sometimes with handles and a wheel, is used for cultivating the land on a par with electric or gasoline-powered cultivators.

Varieties of working bodies of cultivators

Always in operation, a manual cultivator for giving, such as in the photo.

Among the many shapes and sizes of tools, they are classified into several types according to the shape and functions of the working body. So, a pitchfork with curved horns, winding the roots of the ubiquitous wheatgrass around itself, was invented relatively recently, and was named for the effect of combating malicious perennials.

Of the new tools, it is possible to note engineer Fokin's flat cutters, with three-sided sharpening of a narrow strip of tool steel. They have a rectangular handle, an adjustable working angle, and can remove any weed from a narrow crevice. Loop-shaped such rippers - weeders cut the roots at a depth and do not turn over the top layer of soil, keeping the mulch on the surface. Toothed hand cultivators, on the contrary, are needed for loosening the top layer.

Rotary cultivators are used for loosening, weeding. They are efficient, requiring little effort to propel the stargazer. Miniature arrowheads on curved shafts are excellent rippers and are often mounted on homemade tools with hand-drawn wheels.

So, according to the shape of the working body, cultivators divide;

  • flat cutters and loops;
  • serrated, with a flat, sharp and arrow-shaped end, from one to 7 links;
  • rotary, with a set of spinning stars;
  • straight vertical rods - raking tools.

Some models combine two functions, for example, a manual rotary cultivator with a looped weeder.

The well-known manufacturer of the preparation EM-1 Baikal for soil improvement has created a tool for tillage. Lamellar flat cutters of various widths, assembled in a set. Their difference is that the strip is sharpened on both sides and the work efficiency doubles. Handles for these flat cutters are selected separately. The goal is to cut the roots of weeds, which then destroy effective microorganisms.

Any summer resident dreams that he always has the right tool at hand. Therefore, they are bought, and their own designs are created based on known forms, but changing the dimensions, handle height, grip width.

How to make a manual cultivator with your own hands

Everyone can put a nozzle on the handle. We offer to build a manual cultivator with your own hands from an unusable bicycle and improvised means. The wheel is best taken from a teenage touring bike with a wide rim. Only front wheel with fork is used. The working part on the frame can be made in any way - with 2 rows of teeth, sprockets or a flat loop. Most importantly, in a manual cultivator, the frame must be strong with bolted stiffeners, connections with handles made from plain or glued wood. Instead of wood, light tubes made of non-ferrous metal can be used. A convenient and lightweight ripper is indispensable for processing wide row-spacings, near-trunk circles of trees.

Another equally effective hand tool will be a manual rotary cultivator. The main nodes in the drawing:

  • working elements of an asterisk or disks - 1;
  • axles for fastening working sprockets - 2;
  • bushings for assembling the assembly - 3;
  • connecting brackets, large and small - 5, 4;
  • frame rod, passing into the pipe and connected to the transverse handle - 6.7, 8.

The discs are spherical, they are created by forming. But with the same success, you can use the manual "hedgehogs", and use them to assemble the working body. A detailed drawing of a manual cultivator with your own hands to help you.

Among the designs of homemade products, there are full-fledged walk-behind tractors created on the basis of chainsaws and other motor equipment. The value of these homemade devices for the owner is that he used improvised means and created a tool for his needs. On the other hand, the cost of factory models does not always allow you to buy a cultivator from a well-known reliable manufacturer. How else can you assemble a manual cultivator with your own hands, watch the video:

Getting to know factory-made cultivators

If the farmer does not have the opportunity to create an inexpensive effective assistant, Ukrainian engineers did it. Without motor, with one wheel and handles, the simple design makes it easier to work on the site. One of the 6 work units is attached to the nest. Therefore, the device is called a universal manual cultivator Zemler 6 in 1.

The fixture weighs 9.5 kg, handling is good, female hands can easily handle the cultivator. The parts shown in the photo represent the working tools:

  1. Okuchnik, which is the main working tool. Cutting furrows, raking potatoes is done with the help of a hiller. But it is replaced in the kit by a disk ripper, which performs the same function as the hiller.
  2. The flat cutter with installed razor blades, which cut the roots of weeds, is adjustable according to the width of the rows with plants.
  3. The inter-row cultivator is used for loosening, cutting the grass. This tool has adjustable axial inclination and depth of lowering into the ground.
  4. There is a plow, it serves for cutting furrows when sowing seeds into the ground.
  5. They loosen the earth when a crust is formed with the stars that are included in the kit.
  6. The kit includes a furrow former, with it comes with a marker. The knot is used in sowing.

The factory design does not withstand work in heavy wet areas. Therefore, in the reviews of the masters there is advice to strengthen the wheel mounting frame and strengthen the handles with two rigid jumpers. The handles need to be slightly lengthened and made more comfortable.

It is worth paying attention to the design of Vinnitsa masters. It was called without frills - Manual cultivator "Universal dredger 5 in 1". The product costs 450 hryvnias, translated into Russian money 3000 rubles.

The following tools can be mounted in turn on the base frame:

  • row spacing;
  • plow with a marker;
  • razor;
  • cultivator.

As a result, there is a frame with a size of 64x30x30 cm with a hinged device. The nimble tool will become an indispensable tool for planting and hilling, weeding and loosening the garden.

We are accustomed to getting a harvest with hard work. The principles of smart farming suggest otherwise. Do not dig the soil unnecessarily, this violates its structure. Do not loosen the top layer deeper than 5 cm for the same reason. Do not weed the beds to the last weed. Mulch the soil more and more often and breed beneficial microorganisms in it. Labor will become easier, and the harvest will be greater.

It will clean the top layer of vegetation, cut the roots and fly furrows with an arrow. To raise the earth, nourish it with air, there is a ripper and a cultivator. They will also destroy the crust after watering or rain. The included markers will help you adjust the width of the attachments. The plow and furrow holder are indispensable spring tools.

The manual cultivator is composed of parts made of high quality steel. A strong keeled coulter determines the depth of tillage. The handles are comfortable to use and durable. The set of tools is optimal, and the dimensions are such that the cultivator will fit into any nook and cranny.

In order to get a good harvest, the land not only needs to be plowed and sown. In the process of growing various crops, the soil also needs to be loosened and processed. It is required to pull out all the weeds and it is especially important to spud the earth. For these purposes, a cultivator is perfect. With your own hands, such an apparatus can be made at home, you just need to have a great desire.

Options for homemade hand cultivators

Such an important function can be performed with a shovel.. But hard work doesn't pay off. The very efficiency of labor increases several times if mechanized means of tillage are used. Any owner of a small plot of land can make a manual plow with their own hands. Of the special tools, a welding machine may be needed.

It should be noted that they began to cultivate the soil a very long time ago. A few decades ago, at the peak of the garden and country lifestyle, such a tool was very popular. It was both bought at factories and made independently.

The most popular types of tools are:

The scope of devices is the widest. Cultivators can perform the following tasks:

  • loosen the earth, thereby saturating it with oxygen;
  • cut rows for sowing crops and sprinkle them;
  • save plants from the influence of weeds, etc.;
  • be used together with a walk-behind tractor;
  • break up lumps of soil and level the ground.

Necessary materials and tools

In order to always be able to make some necessary products in the country, it is necessary to prepare the most popular materials in advance.

First you need to stock up on a lot of steel. It should be in every workshop. The number of different strips, profiles and pipes determines how many necessary tools you can make yourself.

Welding will be an indispensable tool in every household. With its help, you can quickly and reliably connect all the details of various designs. As an alternative to welding, bolts and nuts are used, but the reliability will not be comparable.

Many do not know where to start when assembling a manual cultivator with their own hands. Drawings are the first thing a novice owner should stock up on . And you also need to have the following set of tools and materials:

Cultivator "Tornado"

To make such a cultivator is not difficult. Its base can be made of a metal pipe. Steel bars must be welded to the end of the lower part of the pipe, thereby forming a square shape. After that, the rods are bent in a spiral direction, and the ends are sharpened.

As an alternative, you can use a bicycle handlebar as a lever, and install a shovel shaft instead of a metal handle. This will significantly save your own strength during work.

Such an apparatus is intended for digging various roots at great depths, for preparing holes for planting trees, etc. It can be used as an electrophoresis for do-it-yourself soil cultivation.

How to make a flat cutter

Many are looking for a weed cultivator. Such a weeding apparatus can be made independently. A profile pipe made of metal or steel is used as the basis for the frame. This base must be made of 2 parts. You need to weld at an angle of 30 degrees. A wheel fork is welded to the frame, made of a steel pipe or plate 3 mm thick. The wheel itself can be either made independently or bought. The steering wheel must be made of 2 steel pipes fixed to the frame.

The horizontal part of the frame is an adapter for the cutting attachment. Then you need to mount a knife, which is made of a steel tape 2-3 mm thick. Next, the knives are sharpened. The sharpening angle can be changed or adjustable knives can be installed. If the farm has an old bicycle, then all spare parts can be taken from it. Due to the large diameter of the bicycle wheel, the movement becomes very easy when working. The knife is made in the form of an inverted letter "P", or T-shaped. It should be noted that the T-shaped knife must be used very carefully between the rows, as there is a possibility of spoiling the crop.

A special subspecies of the flat cutter is the design with forks. Such an apparatus has several knives that are mounted on a fork. It is made of steel rods, and they, in turn, are bent in a special way.

For such an apparatus, you also need to make handmade knives with your own hands. Drawings of these devices are found in various thematic forums and blogs.

The design has a fairly easy move. Both a fragile girl and a small child can work with such an apparatus. Loosening occurs at the highest level, but the roots of weeds are practically not cut off. To do this, you need to choose what is more important: high-quality loosening or removal of pests from the soil.

Although such a device is called a plow, its direct purpose rereads it. It does not have the classic properties of a plow. Even two people are not enough to work with such a tool. He is more of a classic cultivator. The device resembles a flat cutter, but a traction handle is additionally installed.

For such a design, one person is taken in front, who plays the role of a traction force. And the second, the operator, controls the process of cultivating the land. It is impossible to use such a device without a co-pilot.

It is important to note that such a tool is not suitable for plowing the soil for two reasons. The first is that a normal plow turns over the layers of soil, and the device only loosens it. In addition, only one human force is not enough for normal plowing of the land.

Rotary or star

Making such a device is not a difficult task. To make the structure, you need 5-7 stars, which will serve as knives, strung on the axis. These knives can be either straight or curved to the sides. After cultivating the soil with such a tool, it is recommended to walk between the rows and a flat cutter. A combination of two models is also possible, when stars go into the structure first, and then a flat cutter is used for the final stage. In this way, the worker's strength and energy can be significantly saved. Since the stars perform the function of wheels in the design, an additional axle is not needed.

It is quite difficult to work with such a tool, so only a physically trained person can handle it. In a similar garden design, wheels of the same diameter can be installed instead of stars. In this case, you get a good weeding hiller.

Cultivator "Hedgehogs"

For the base, you need to prepare a powerful fork made of steel strip. In front of the tool is a working axis with nozzles. They need to be made from pieces of pipe, on which steel bars with pointed tips are welded. Actually, that's where the name comes from.

Loosening is carried out by lightly shaking the soil and piercing it, but the weeds remain in place, especially their roots. The main advantage of this subspecies is the easy movement of the tool. Inter-row passage is carried out almost effortlessly.

Just like in the star model, in the “hedgehog” design, you can additionally install a flat cutter for the last stage of tillage, with which all weeds are removed. For the handle, you can use both a stick from a shovel and a bicycle handlebar. Such a steering wheel can be used in front of you and behind you.

For the first option, it is necessary to drive the “hedgehogs” nozzle into the ground with its own weight. This process is quite labor intensive. For the second case, you need to weight the working part. Nevertheless, it is much easier for them to work, despite the extra weight. In such work, you can listen to the advice of parents. They are familiar with such tools personally. In the past, manual structures were very often used, since there were no mechanized means at all.

Important nuances at work

During the performance of any work in the workshop, it is necessary to comply with all safety measures. It is very important to protect your eyes when working with welding, regardless of its type.

When using arc welding, the danger can be carried not only by the light from the burning of the arc, but also by chipping steel at the site of the newly formed seam. Moreover, the seam can break off on its own and be thrown out over a long distance.

Tapping on a hot seam would also be a bad idea, as hardened steel can get not only into the eyes, but also behind the collar or into the hair. Therefore, these places must be closed in the first place.

When working with electric welding, gloves and a protective helmet are required, since work takes place at high temperatures. You should also avoid combining oxygen and oil, as this is an explosive mixture, and a spark is not needed for detonation.

Do-it-yourself production of a manual soil cultivator will cost much less than its factory counterparts. The cost will be higher when the design includes both mechanized and additional tools, and "gadgets".

By making an inter-row homemade product, you can not only save money, but also get the opportunity to design it for your personal needs. This will allow you to achieve maximum convenience when working with such a tool.

Therefore, even such simple products as a “hedgehog” or a cultivator from a bicycle can significantly reduce labor costs during work. This process will be unique and very convenient.

Owners of land plots know firsthand the labor-intensive process of cultivating the land. The use of a shovel, hoe, rake, of course, facilitates work, but is not very suitable for processing large areas, and requires no small physical effort.

But progress does not stand still - they came up with to facilitate human labor. For female gardeners, this is a useful find.

This technique is used in vegetable gardens, and on plots, in vineyards and orchards. One machine can replace many fixtures and takes up little space.

The options for using a hand cultivator are as follows:

  • cultivates land before planting or sowing;
  • loosens the soil for oxygen saturation;
  • copes with splitting large clods of earth;
  • pulls out weeds;
  • helps in the care of flower beds;
  • used for weeding the site;
  • envelops the earth.

In the article we will talk about what cultivators are, what they are intended for and how to make them with your own hands. We will also analyze several specific home-made hand cultivators.

Possibilities of manual cultivators

For hard to reach areas or where a more careful approach is required, a hand rotary cultivator is well suited. It is brought to work by human effort.

Due to the "hedgehogs" it copes with the churning and loosening of the soil. It also turns the soil layers, which contributes to the fight against weeds.

There are also star cultivators that remove roots. They are usually easy to use, replace a shovel, and make digging much easier.

The manual cultivator is intended for:

  • soil loosening;
  • digging for further planting;
  • removal of weed crops with roots;
  • processing areas under trees, bushes;
  • soil enrichment with oxygen.

Mini-cultivators are well suited for small areas, they do not take up much space, they are easy to move due to their low weight. Suitable for loosening the soil under trees, bushes and in hard-to-reach places. Land work is facilitated due to the correct distribution of the load on the muscles and the location of the person during work.

Varieties of cultivators

This technique is available in different models:

  • disk
  • paw
  • rotary
  • milling.

Almost all cultivators work according to the same principle: the mechanical part is started, which sets the device loosening the soil into motion.

Its classification depends on the purpose of the equipment: the difference in size, engine power, operation, and the extent of work. Given these criteria, they are:

  • lungs
  • moderate
  • heavy.

For relatively small areas with soft soil, light equipment is suitable, usually flower beds, greenhouses. Medium weight equipment is designed for clay soil. Heavy equipment is universal, it is suitable for all types of soil.

Cultivators differ in the way they function:

  • manual cultivators;
  • with electric drive;
  • on gasoline.

We will focus on hand-held cultivators, which you can make yourself to save money.

A number of advantages of manual designs:

  1. They are economical, do not require refueling.
  2. Replace several devices: a shovel, a hoe, a rake.
  3. They take up little space.
  4. Help to distribute the load on all muscles.

Manufacturing technology

From a pitchfork of the "Tornado" type

It has the simplest design, somewhat reminiscent of a corkscrew. Consists of a vertical stand and a horizontal handle. Such a cultivator can be safely performed independently from ordinary pitchforks.

This will require a plastic nozzle, which is usually used for pitchforks, shovels, in the form of a handle. We slightly modify the nozzle so that the handle looks like a horizontal pipe. As it, take a part of a plastic pipe measuring 0.5 m.

Note: in order for everything to fit together, the diameter of the pipe must be slightly larger than the diameter of the nozzle.

  1. An incision is made along the pipe so that when everted, it fits on the handle.
  2. For reliable coupling and further practical use, fix everything with electrical tape.
  3. It remains only to give the pitchfork torsion in the form of a corkscrew. To do this, the teeth are bent with a hammer in the right direction.

Bicycle based

In order to make a homemade cultivator from improvised means, you will need an old frame from a bicycle and one wheel.

Assembly method:

  1. A cultivator head is attached to the frame, which is either ready-made spare parts from an old device, or made independently from steel twigs. A small plow is suitable for the frame. And for ease of control, the handle is made of steel pipe.
  2. The crossbar is created from a pipe with a diameter of 2-3 cm.
  3. The whole structure is fixed with bolts, nothing should hang out.
  4. For convenience, the wheel is taken in medium size, securing it with locknuts.
  5. This type of cultivator is designed for weeding the earth between the beds.

Disc rotary

This type is designed for breaking up hard pieces and leveling the soil. The main working element is disks in the form of a sphere. The whole difficulty lies in their manufacture.

The order of work is as follows:

  1. Spherical plates 4 mm thick are made of metal. The bowls are knocked out with a hammer in the center of the plate itself.
  2. Discs are welded to the bushings, replacing them on the axle.
  3. The edge of the axle is fixed with special cotter pins in brackets.
  4. The ledge is made in a bracket, which is larger in size, a pipe and a handle are passed through it.
  5. In a smaller bracket, a rod with a diameter of 25 mm and a length of 26 cm is made. A rod 15 mm thick is also screwed in here.
  6. The convex corners of the cultivator are fixed with wing nuts.
  7. Due to the rotation of the convex corners, the large bracket bends, the rod rises, and the angle of the elements changes.

Chainsaw cultivator

It is made on the basis of a chainsaw engine. It's good if you have all the components, if not, you need to buy more.
You will need materials:

  • metal corner;
  • fuel tank;
  • a tube;
  • rubberized wheels;
  • star for the intermediate shaft (41 teeth);
  • moped star.

First you need to weld a cube frame using metal corners for a walk-behind tractor. The frame size is 32 by 32 cm, the engine is mounted on the transverse corners on top, and the fuel tank is installed on the brackets below. Then, an intermediate shaft is attached to the corner vertically standing racks. For the running shaft, the bearings are attached to the longitudinal corners. From all this comes a walk-behind tractor supported on the surface of the wheel.

For handles, pipes with a diameter of approximately 30 mm are used. Good wheels will come out of rubber. Here a star for an intermediate shaft with 41 teeth and a main star (a moped one will do) come in handy. It remains only to assemble all the parts into one mechanism, and you will get a garden cultivator from a chainsaw (by the way, you can read how to choose a chainsaw).

This can be done even without blueprints. In addition, the cultivator is not very demanding on materials for refueling, unlike purchased models.

Cultivators greatly facilitate land work, help to qualitatively cultivate the land before planting, fight weeds and are simply indispensable for large areas. And if there is no money to buy these expensive machines, then it is quite possible to make it yourself.

How to make a hand cultivator from a bicycle tells this in detail video:

Summer is about to come, and most of our free time will be taken up with garden chores. Probably the main ones are growing potatoes. After all, it is this culture that has become almost the main one on our gardens and tables. So, you know how difficult it is to pile rows of potatoes by hand. There are many devices designed to facilitate this work, and one of them is the hiller. You can make it yourself from an old bike.

How the hiller is used

Those who spud potatoes with their hands know what pain in the back, shoulders and arms responds to a long standing in a bent position. Even if you use a relatively comfortable long-handled flat cutter, this is unlikely to save you from discomfort. Therefore, it is very important during hilling to minimize inclinations with a long retention of such a posture. No matter what they say about the need for physical activity, but gymnastic exercises and work in the garden are very different things. Just the hiller, due to its height, will help you carry out the work without bending your back. There are many ways to make this device from scrap materials (not to mention buying a pre-made factory model), but it would be nice to keep costs and labor to a minimum. An old bicycle, no longer suitable for direct duties, is the best fit for this. It's the perfect height, the right shape, the handlebars are just right, and it's a little light.

An old broken bicycle is very easy to convert into a useful tool for gardening.

Let's look at how the manual hiller works.

The main part of the device is a plow, which can be conical or in the form of an arrowhead. It is he who plows the ground, deepening into it by 10-15 cm. The blades of the plow must be located at a certain angle in order to push the soil in the aisle to the desired width when moving and cover the potato row with raised soil. The width of this part depends on the width of the rows.

A plow of a suitable shape is the main component of the hiller

The plow is mounted on a bicycle frame with a steering wheel. Through the steering wheel you control the unit. And the advancement of the device along the bed is provided by the wheel in front of the frame.

That is, in simple words, the algorithm of actions when working with the hiller looks like this:

Potatoes will be piled up faster, and most importantly, easier than if you did it with glanders, processing each bush.

Note! This method of hilling with the help of the device in question is equally well suited for beds planted in both ridge and row methods.

Making a hiller from a bicycle

If you have been friends with the instrument for a long time and bear the proud title of "jack of all trades", then assembling such a device for you will be nothing more than entertainment for a couple of hours. But the hiller from the old bike is so simple that even a beginner will not have difficulty doing it.

What materials and tools will be needed

Everything you need is probably in your garage. In extreme cases, any component is easy to get anywhere - from friends, neighbors, in a store or in the trash.

Step by step description of the process

The manufacture of the hiller consists of several stages.

Note! Remember safety precautions while working. If necessary, wear gloves or mittens, protect your eyes with goggles, and protect your airways with a respirator.

Preparatory stage

First you need to prepare the bike frame for the next steps. Remove the handlebar, saddle, rear wheel and pedals. Remove the tire and tube from the front wheel so that only the rim remains.

Disassemble the bike, removing all unnecessary parts from it

Prepare the plow (cultivator) section for attachment to the place where the rear wheel was. To do this, weld the mount to the section.

Unit manufacturing stage

Cut off the rear wheel mount so that only the frame triangle remains. The section of the tractor cultivator is screwed to the cut off place, right next to the area where the pedals were attached. Tighten the nuts firmly with a wrench of the correct diameter. Two such wrenches may be needed: one to hold the bolt, the other to tighten the nut.

Use a bicycle wrench and a wrench at the same time to make it easier to tighten the nuts

Adjust the reach of the plow section so that during hilling it is convenient for you to walk at some distance from the machine. Instead of a saddle, install the handlebar and tighten the connection tightly with a bicycle wrench. Adjust the handlebar height to suit your height.

You will also need to tighten the front fork as tight as possible, but it is better to weld it tightly so that it does not turn during the hilling process.

If you do not have a ready-made cultivator section, you can weld it yourself or order it from a specialist welder. In this case, you must adhere to the rules:

  • the width of the hiller should be 2/3 of the width of the row;
  • the angle between the welded blades should be about 80–90° so that the part grasps the ground well.

Remember the safety precautions during welding work! In case of violation, you can get mechanical injuries, thermal burns from drops of molten metal and slag, or electric shock.

You can make working with the hiller even easier if you work in pairs. Put a belt on the front of the machine, which the first participant will pull while the second one operates the device. You can also attach a load to the bottom of the hiller so that the plow cuts into the ground better.

How else can you use a bicycle to make a hiller

The above method is not the only one. You can make a hiller from a front bicycle wheel with a fork. You will need two more pieces of metal pipe, welded at an obtuse angle. A bicycle handlebar is attached to the top of the long tube. It is also better to weld it for reliability. At the junction of two pipes, a cultivator is attached from below.

Making a hiller from the front wheel of a bicycle is even easier

You can also make a hiller out of a tricycle for children. To do this, the seat is removed and the front wheel is unscrewed. But for this option, a ready-made cultivator from a tractor is not suitable. It will be better if you weld the blades at a certain angle on the inside of the frame near the wheels. This design is intended for movement not along the aisle, but along the row.

As you can see, gardening worries can be significantly reduced, and you can easily make a hiller, which will become your assistant, on your own. In addition, you will also attach old, already unusable things, making them a useful fixture. And if you have time to make the appropriate interchangeable nozzles, then the hiller can be used as a cultivator, or weed and loosen the beds. Good luck!
