How to grow a lush palm tree from a date seed. How to grow a date or a date palm from a date seed on a windowsill at home

The date palm is a great opportunity to decorate any room, whether ordinary apartment or office. This idea can be implemented in several ways. The easiest way to buy a plant that has suitable sizes and appearance. However, growing date palms on their own will bring much more joy to a person. Naturally, for this, you will first have to get acquainted with the agricultural technology of work in our climate, which is an order of magnitude different from the tropics.

Seed selection and preparation for planting

Regardless of the tree that you are going to grow at home, the first step is to prepare planting material and provide it with favorable conditions for development. If you want to have a beautiful date palm from the stone, you should decide on a variety that can grow indoors. To do this, you do not have to seek help from specialists, since any dates that have not undergone heat treatment are suitable for this.

The most suitable planting material are fresh dates. You won’t need a photo for this, because if you don’t have them, you can replace them with dry fruits that can be found in any market.

Choosing Dried Dates for Growing decorative palm, it does not hurt to first ask the seller about whether they were cooked in sugar syrup. It is not worth buying fruits that have undergone such heat treatment, since the seeds taken from them will not germinate.

Planting material preparation

When you have the bones, you need to start preparing them for planting:

One more way can be proposed by which the ripening process can be accelerated. For this, prepared bones are placed in hot water, heated to a temperature of 80 degrees, and kept in it for one to two minutes. A sign of seed readiness for planting will be their swelling.

Conditions for growing date palm

A photo of a tree should make it clear that it is not so easy to grow a beautiful date tree, because you need to be careful at every stage.

Even before you plant the seeds in the soil, you need to solve important questions:

  • find suitable premises where the date palm will grow best;
  • find a container of suitable size;
  • prepare the ground.

Considering that the tropics are the natural habitat of palm trees, they can grow well with sufficient lighting and air humidity. But this should not be taken as a recommendation that in the tub you need to create conditions resembling a swamp. For the normal development of date seedlings, it is necessary not only to carry out frequent watering, but also provide direct sunlight for at least three to four hours a day. The most favorable conditions for growing date palms can be created on the south side.

However, keep in mind that the date palm is a fairly tall tree that can reach up to 30 meters. But it is unlikely that it will grow as high in room conditions, usually its height is limited to 2-3 meters. Moreover, to reach such a mark, it will take at least 5 years. To avoid delays in the development of the palm tree it is necessary to provide optimal amount lighting throughout life. In the early years, it is allowed to grow young sprouts in a pot on the windowsill. However, when the seedling matures, it will have to find a suitable place for it, well lit by the sun.

You can grow date palms in any suitable size pots. But we must remember that in the first years of life they form a root, after which they form leaves. Palm tree cultivation begins with planting seeds on a common garden bed, from which the seedlings are already planted in separate tubs.

The soil

For planting seeds, soil of a suitable composition is required. The easiest way to buy it is flower shop. However, it must be a special soil, where there is an indication "for palm trees." If you want to be sure of the quality of the planting soil, it is recommended to prepare it yourself.

A good basis for the soil will be raw sawdust, peat and sand, taken in equal quantities. Other types of soil rippers, such as perlite, are also suitable for this. Before filling the pot with soil mixture, drainage is laid on the bottom. Subsequently, when the palm tree continues to mature, it must be replanted, preparing new soil each time.

Stages of transplanting a date palm from a seed at home: from seed to palm

Proper preparation of the seeds before planting is, of course, an important event. However, this does not guarantee that they will grow strong beautiful plants. If you do not follow the rules for care at one of the subsequent stages, then at any time the tree may wither and die. This can be avoided if the following activities are carried out throughout the life of the plant:

Instances at the age of 5 years must be transplanted every year. Subsequently, transplantation is carried out taking into account the size of the plants. This can be determined by the bulging of the roots from the ground.

When the time comes for transplanting, it is imperative to shorten the felt layer formed by the roots. This will prepare the young palm for artificial conditions cultivation, thereby increasing its survival.

Rules for caring for a date tree

If you want to enjoy the appearance of a date palm, then you will have to provide appropriate care. Considering that she is used to growing in the tropics, it will be useful for her:

  • sunlight;
  • moderate humidity;
  • soft loose soil;
  • periodic shower, which can be replaced by wiping the leaves with a damp cloth;
  • high temperature conditions;
  • space. It is possible to grow a date palm only if there is a large enough free area so that light comes to it from all directions.

Other factors that are not included in this list are harmful to the palm. You can determine the deterioration of the condition of the tree by changing the leaves. They usually turn black. The most likely reason for this is lack of sunlight or poor watering. It should also be noted that the plant can infect the disease if there is a draft from the window in the room. For this reason, you need to ensure that there are no sharp temperature fluctuations in the room.

Realizing that the plant began to feel worse, you need to immediately take urgent measures to correct the situation. Often you can help him by increasing the humidity of the air, which can be done by spraying from a spray bottle with plain water.

Conclusion

The date palm is interesting not only because it is a representative of the tropical climate, but also because of its original appearance. Even with a height of 2-3 meters, it can make an attractive interior of any room.. Growing dates at home is not so difficult if you start paying attention to the plant from the seed sowing stage. It is important to remember that the date palm will only grow well if it is provided with sufficient space. Therefore, at the moment when she becomes high enough, it is necessary to find her optimal location where she will not feel embarrassed.

Needless to say, there are enough plant exotics on the windowsills of modern flower growers. However, the absence of a real date palm in the flower collection is a serious incentive for a new achievement. To grow tropical beauty at home, all you need is a date seed, a great desire and a solid supply of patience.

Of course, the indoor tree will not bear fruit and will not grow to the height of its wild relatives (35 m), but it will look amazing in the interior. In terms of content, the homemade date is unpretentious, but to adopt a few useful advice will be superfluous.

Selection of planting material

To the great joy of lovers of indoor exotics, it is not difficult to acquire a bone for planting in our time. Of the 17 species of date palm that grow in nature, only the following are suitable for home cultivation:

  • The Canarian date is the owner of a pinnate trunk and narrow, hard leaves, growing up to 2 m in height.
  • Robelena - has a chic densely leafy crown and grows up to 1.5–2 m in height.
  • Date finger - not as chic in appearance as the previous ones, but the most unpretentious and fast-growing species.

In addition to purchased seeds, as planting material a bone from a dried fruit bought in grocery store. By the way, a finger date will grow from dried fruit, the berries of which are famous all over the world for their unusual honey-sweet taste.

Seed preparation

In order for the seedlings to turn out to be healthy and of high quality, the bone (or several, if you want to make sure) must go through several stages of processing before sowing:

  • Purification - the stone is removed from the date and washed thoroughly under warm, running water. It is important that even the smallest particles of pulp remain on the seed coat, which can cause rotting processes in the soil after planting. The washed seeds are allowed to age for a day.
  • Awakening - to speed up germination, the bones are put in a colander and doused with boiling water or immersed for several hours in hot (about + 70 °) water.
  • Soaking - the treated seeds are placed in "cocoons" of cotton wool, abundantly moistened with water, put in a shallow dish and cleaned in a very warm (about +30 ... +35 ° C) place until swelling. To prevent the material from drying out, a little water is poured into the mini-incubator daily.

When the bones swell noticeably, it is time for sowing. The best time for this procedure is the end of February - the beginning of March.

Many experienced growers it is recommended to break the integrity of the seed coat before sowing - to rub sandpaper, incise with a knife, pierce with a needle. However, as practice shows, well-swollen bones successfully germinate without these procedures, and in the absence of experience they are very easy to damage.

Sowing features

sowing container date pits can serve as a small Plastic container or individual pots about 8 cm high. The nutrient substrate is prepared from sod land, humus, sand and peat (2: 2: 4: 2) with the addition a small amount charcoal. Bones are planted vertically, covering them with a layer of soil about 1 cm thick. The surface of the substrate is covered with sphagnum moss or the container is covered with a transparent film. In anticipation of germination, crops are kept warm (about +25 ° C), maintaining soil moisture. Date seeds germinate tightly, the process can take from 3 to 6 months.

With the advent of the first sprouts, the shelter is removed, and when the seedlings grow to a height of 10-15 cm, they are transferred to permanent place. The composition of the substrate does not change, but the capacity should be higher - about 10–12 cm. Required condition for the full development of palms - good drainage.

Conditions of detention

A flower grower who wants to grow a real date palm should be patient. Young plants do not look very impressive, and in order for them to become a luxurious element of the interior, at least 5 years must pass. In the meantime, the pet is growing and getting prettier, she should be provided with proper care:

  • A pot with a young palm tree must be systematically (preferably every 10–15 days) rotated around its own axis by 180 ° so that all leaves are equally illuminated. From a long stay in the shade sheet plates become brittle and elongated, develop unevenly and gradually stop growing. In addition, from uneven lighting, a palm tree can grow lopsided and unstable.
  • It is very important to protect the pet from drafts, which are detrimental to her.
  • The usual room temperature from +22 to +26 ° C is quite comfortable for a palm tree. With sufficient humidity, it easily tolerates heat up to +35 ° C. AT winter time if possible, the temperature of the content is recommended to be reduced to +18 ° C.
  • The soil under the tree should always be slightly moist, so it is very important to properly organize the irrigation regime. In summer, the procedure is carried out at least 3-4 times a week, in winter 1-2 times in 7-10 days will be enough. For irrigation, it is recommended to use settled, warm (about +20 ° C), preferably non-chlorinated water.
  • The date palm is also sensitive to ambient humidity. Every day, the crown of the tree must be sprayed with a spray bottle and wipe the leaves from dust with a damp sponge, and once a week the plant is satisfied warm shower during which the soil is covered with polyethylene. Regular water procedures not only provide the pet with a well-groomed appearance, but also serve effective measure against attack by pests.

Note! It is strictly forbidden to cut or break off the top of the palm tree, since it is it that is the only growth point of the tree.

In the spring, when it is thoroughly warmer outside, it is useful to take home dates into the open air. The “walk” time is increased gradually, however, at night the tree can be left in the garden or on the balcony only when there is danger return frosts finally passes. Outdoors, a young palm tree is recommended to be placed in light shade from buildings or spreading trees so that the delicate leaves do not suffer from scorching rays. Despite the fact that in natural conditions most a date spends its life under scorching sun, an indoor tree may not endure such a test.

top dressing

In the warm season, the date is fed every 2 weeks with a full complex fertilizer. For this purpose, special dressings for palm trees or for decorative leafy crops, which can be purchased at a flower shop, are suitable. The palm tree also responds gratefully to the introduction of potassium nitrate, dissolved in irrigation water in the proportion of 10 g / 10 l. In winter, a period of natural dormancy begins for the plant, and its development slows down, the power supply at this time is completely canceled.

Transfer

Palm trees under the age of 5 years are transplanted annually, choosing a larger pot (3-4 cm). Mature trees are "relocated" to a new container as the root system grows, but not more than 1 time in 2 years. You can determine that the plant has become cramped in the old pot by the roots that have emerged from the drainage hole. If there is no special need for the procedure, then a layer of depleted soil 4–5 cm thick is simply removed from under an adult date and the vacated space is filled with a fertile substrate.

Regardless of age, the date palm is very painful to transplant, so it should be carried out as carefully as possible:

  • The day before the procedure, the soil under the palm tree should be shed abundantly warm water to make it easier to remove the tree from the container.
  • A drainage layer is laid in a pre-selected new pot, a little soil is poured, after which the plant is transferred into it, trying not to damage the old earthen lump and root system. Save the top!
  • After transshipment, the voids are filled with fresh soil mixture, slightly compacted and watered.

Transplanting a date is a rather complicated procedure, especially if the tree is mature and heavy. In the case when it is problematic to pull a palm tree out of the pot without damaging the roots, it is better to sacrifice the container and break it.

Possible problems

Despite the fact that the date palm is not too capricious, not every grower succeeds in avoiding difficulties in the process of growing it. In order to notice and correct the problem in time, it is necessary to carefully monitor appearance pets:

Only surrounded by care and care, the date palm quickly grows and after a few years turns into exotic beauty, allowing you to turn the most ordinary room in a real cozy oasis.

The article will tell you how to grow a beautiful homemade date palm tree.

Everyone who has eaten a date at least once noticed the presence of a seed inside the fruit. People involved in growing flowers or gardening thought, “Is it possible to grow something from a bone?”. It is known that dates grow on a palm tree, so you immediately want to grow something similar at home.

Turns out, Growing a date palm at home is very easy. But it is important to know that a plant that is not in natural conditions will never bear fruit. However, the palm tree is beautiful and can easily fit into any interior. With due and good care she might even bloom.

A palm tree grown from a date seed requires big place and space in the room. This is a necessity because the palm leaves are large and long, they rush high up and wide to the sides. That is why the plant should be kept in a room where there is a lot of light and little furniture.

The palm tree will look spectacular only where all its “royalty” will be noticeable. In a corner or against a wall, she will “feel bad” and will not be able to adequately develop. Choosing a pot for this plant should also be correct, you need to give preference to large clay or ceramic containers.

If you decide to grow a palm tree from a date seed, you should be aware that this process can be long and very long, up to two years. It all depends on what type of plant the bone belongs to. A small plant that has not reached its maturity and splendor will temporarily be able to "live" on the windowsill.

How to plant a date seed and grow a date palm at home?

IMPORTANT: You will be able to grow a palm tree only if the date seed was taken from an untreated fruit with high temperatures. Fresh date palm fruits are ideal for this, which you can bring with you from "hot countries". Properly dried fruits also retain a “healthy” bone capable of sprouting.

How to plant a bone:

  • Gather a handful of date seeds (to make sure at least one of them sprouted).
  • Rinse the bones thoroughly with water to remove excess pulp so that they cannot rot in the soil.
  • Dry the bones after washing.
  • Since the date seed is hard, it is recommended to soften it a little or make the sprout come out easily: wipe it with sandpaper or cut it a little with a blade. So moisture can quickly penetrate the seed.
  • Place the date seeds on a layer of cotton soaked in water in a saucer, cover with a damp layer of gauze, folded several times, and place on a sunny windowsill. Each time you evaporate moisture, moisten the cotton wool.
  • If you don’t have a lot of sun, you can place a saucer on the battery, it is important that there is a lot of heat.
  • Watch the bone, if it is swollen - it's time to plant it in the ground.
  • Place the bones in the ground, this should be done with the stone vertically.
  • The pot with the stone should always be placed in a warm place and regularly make sure that the soil in the pot is moist.
  • You will be able to notice the first shoots after 1.5-2 months.

INTERESTING: This soaking can save you several months of growing time by speeding up the process.

Date from the stone at home: care

The date palm pot deserves special attention. It must be made from natural material and have a tall, not wide shape because dates have long roots. Be sure to put a layer of drainage on the bottom of the pot, this will allow the plant not to experience a lack and excess of moisture.

What should be the soil for a date palm:

  • Sand
  • Manure (humus)

Since the process of growing a palm tree is long, you will need a lot of time spent on waiting and effort invested in caring for the plant. It is noteworthy that the palm tree should be transplanted every year and with each transplant, increase the volume of the pot.

Date palm transplantation should be only according to the principle of transshipment, because the roots of the plant are very thin and delicate. Carefully remove the palm tree from the pot so as not to damage the roots. If the roots are damaged, the plant can quickly die.

Choose for your date palm light and warm room where the air temperature will not fall below 15-16 degrees. In no case should you put a date near a radiator, fireplace or air conditioner - it will die. Protect the palm tree from drafts, and in the summer, try to put it on the balcony or on the street (veranda, garden with a gazebo, etc.).

The ideal air humidity for a date is 50%. Date loves spraying with water, but not in excessive amounts, so one spraying per day in the warm or cold season will be enough. AT dark room the date will turn yellow, its leaves will be brittle. The date allows direct sunlight to reach its leaves, but in limited quantities.

In order for the plant to be beautiful and have a proportionally lush crown, you should regularly turn the pot towards the light in different directions. Regularly check the drying of the soil so that there is no dry "coma". Water can be poured into the tray. In winter, watering the plant should be limited.

The palm loves when the leaves are wiped, removing dust and moisturizing them. In the hot season, you can arrange a shower for the palm tree, but make sure that the ground is not too wet. Feed the plant regularly organic fertilizers. In the warm season, you can do this once a week, listening to the instructions on the package, and in winter - once a month.

Date palm care at home

Transplantation of a date from a stone

Transplantation for dates should be only by means of transshipment. Plant transplantation (young and adult) should occur once a year, you also need to change the pot to a more free one as the root system increases. If you have already germinated a bone in sawdust or wet cotton wool, it has swollen and increased in size, it should be lowered into the ground.

First, prepare the right soil mixture, moisten or lower the stone by pressing on it with your finger. This is easy to do, as the bone falls vertically. Do not lower the bone too deep, 1.5-2 cm will be enough.

Looking at the oblong bones inside the dates loved by kids and adults, many indoor plant lovers wondered: “How does a real date palm grow from such a crumb, and what will happen if you plant a seed at home?”

Sweet dates sold in stores are the fruits of the Phoenix dactylifera palm. In nature, a powerful tree grows to a gigantic size, producing huge bunches of fruits famous throughout the world.

For indoor cultivation smaller, indoor-friendly species are offered. Such palms can be seen and purchased in flower shops. If you want to independently engage in the cultivation of date palm from the stone, there is a high probability of success.

Biological description of the date genus

All representatives of a small genus are mostly trees or squat shrubs with characteristic pinnately dissected leaves. Besides, hallmark most representatives is a single trunk without branching. Long hard leathery leaves of dark green color near the base have spines. Date - a tree with small yellow flowers collected in paniculate inflorescences. Cirrus leaves are located on a long handle at an angle. The height of the palm tree can be different and ranges from 15 to 30 meters.

How to sprout a date seed

Having chosen fruits for seeds, you need to process them before sowing. This is done in the following order:

  • The pit is removed from the date.
  • Very carefully remove the remnants of the pulp and rinse well with warm water.
  • The cleaned bones are placed for 48 hours in warm water in order to rid future plants of harmful microorganisms that can infect the soil and cause rotting of seedlings. Water should be changed daily.
  • Clean seeds are dried for 24 hours.

Date seeds have a very dense shell, and in order to facilitate water access to the embryo, it is necessary to break its integrity. You can do this in 4 ways:

  1. Rinse the bones hot water(not boiling water!). The water temperature should be around 80 degrees.
  2. Carefully pierce the shell with a sharp object, being careful not to damage the seed itself.
  3. Treat the bone with sandpaper, thus removing part of the shell.
  4. Lightly cut the bone sharp knife along the seam.
Seed preparation is almost complete. Let's move on to soaking.
  • The most effective soaking is with cotton wool. A piece of cotton wool in a small container (for example, in a plate) is abundantly moistened with water, a bone is placed on it, covered with another layer of moistened cotton wool on top to prevent rapid evaporation of moisture. Cotton wool can be replaced with gauze, sawdust, hydrogel.
  • Germination requires a high temperature, so the container with cotton wool can be placed on the battery. Every day you need to look after the moisture content of cotton wool and add a little water.
  • When the bone swells well, it can be transplanted into the ground.

Thanks to soaking, several months are saved. best time to start germination - February-March. Even if you want to grow only one date from a seed, you need to take several seeds. Some sprouts will die due to diseases or your inept actions during transplantation, so a safety net will not hurt.

How to plant a date palm seed

1. Prepare a pot for planting.
2. Prepare the ground for planting. It should contain peat, sand or sawdust.
3. Moisten the soil abundantly before planting.
4. Immerse the bones vertically into the ground to a depth of about 3-4 cm.
5. Put the pot in a warm place, and so that the soil does not dry out, carefully monitor its moisture content.
6. After a month and a half, the sprouted bone should be carefully transplanted into a pot about 8 cm high, filling it with a mixture of turf, peat, sand, humus, charcoal in proportions 2: 2: 4: 2: 1. During this procedure, it is important not to tear off the bone, as it still serves as a nutrient for the sprout.
7. Warning! The palm tree does not tolerate transplants well, so it is better to transfer the sprout along with the ground to a larger pot.
8. After transplanting, place the pot in a bright place, avoiding direct sunlight. Remember to spray the sprouts and water them with lukewarm water.
9. When the sprouts reach 10-15 cm, transplant them into pots 15 cm high. The composition of the soil should remain the same. Drainage from stones should be arranged at the bottom of the pot, and several holes should be made in the very bottom to let excess water out.

date palm transplant

When a small leaf appears from the ground, and then a sprout, it is time for seedlings to be planted. The date has a delicate and vulnerable root system, so the transplant must be carried out very carefully. To do this, it is necessary to capture the nearest piece of land along with a lump of soil that surrounds the root. If the root is still damaged, such a plant will not take root, so you can immediately throw it away

Date care at home

  • Date palm from the stone, growing at home, requires some care.
  • Subject to all the rules of agricultural technology, caring for this exotic will be quite simple and not burdensome, and most importantly, you can grow a beautiful tree that will delight with its decorative effect all year round.
  • Despite the fact that this photophilous plant, it can be grown in partial shade. A room with bright diffused light is ideal for keeping this exotic. The date does not tolerate direct sunlight, because of which its leaves turn pale, turn yellow and dry out.
  • The optimum temperature for keeping a date palm at home is 15-18 degrees Celsius throughout the year. In winter, the plant is placed in a cool room, thus creating a dormant period.
  • This plant is demanding on air humidity. Throughout the year, especially in winter, when the air in the room is too dry, above-ground part dates are recommended to be sprayed often. For hygiene and beauty purposes, adult date leaves are periodically wiped with a damp cloth.
  • It is recommended to water the date at home moderately and only after the surface of the substrate dries to a depth of 2-3 cm. winter period watering is reduced to a minimum, in summer it is moistened more often, especially on hot days. For irrigation use rainwater or settled water. room temperature.
  • This exotic responds well to top dressing. Indoor dates are fertilized with special preparations for Palm, which can be purchased at any flower shop, or you can cook at home. chicken manure, diluted with water in a ratio of 1: 3 - perfect nutrition for dates at home. The liquid solution is brought to a volume of 10 liters with water and applied 1 time in 10 days throughout the growing season. In winter, the plant is fertilized once a month.
  • You can propagate the date palm at home only with the help of seeds-stones.

A representative of the genus may be a tree or a squat shrub. The leaves are pinnatipartite, long, with strong and sharp spines. A significant part of the species is represented by single-trunk trees, but there are also species with several trunks. The flowers are small, yellow, collected in paniculate inflorescences. The plant is dioecious.

How dates grow and how a tree looks in natural conditions

Under natural conditions, dates or date palms grow in the presence of full sunny day and do not tolerate shading at all. Homeland are the southern regions of Iran, as well as the territory of ancient Mesopotamia and Northern part Africa. Many species grow on the Arabian Peninsula.

exotic trees often become a real decoration of the landscape in waterless areas and look especially impressive in desert areas. In height, the tree often reaches 25-35 m, with a width of the stem part of 0.8 m with six-meter pinnate leaves. AT natural environment the plant reproduces vegetatively, by means of young shoots appearing at the foot. After flowering, fruits are formed that are low enough, which greatly facilitates their collection.

How to grow date palm from seed at home

grow up to be an adult ornamental plant from the stone is not difficult, both for experienced and novice flower growers. Seeds obtained from dates that have not been cooked are suitable for planting. Growing indoor date palm from seed looks like in the following way:

  • the bones are freed from the fruit pulp, washed and slightly dried;
  • clean and dried bones are placed in water at room temperature for a couple of days and kept in the sun;
  • water replacement is carried out at least three times per day;
  • to accelerate germination, it is recommended to rub the surface of the seeds with fine sandpaper and again immerse in warm water.

Swollen seeds should be planted in pre-prepared and disinfected nutrient soil.

Date palm: how to grow and care for the plant

Sprouting seeds and growing a healthy plant can sometimes be quite difficult. Properly prepared seeds should be planted strictly in vertical position, slightly sprinkled with soil. In order for the sprout to appear as early as possible, a film shelter is installed or a layer of sphagnum moss is placed on top of the planting. The culture grows relatively slowly, but it is necessary to properly care for the culture at all stages of development.

Optimal conditions

On too hot days, perennial leaves can dry out at the ends, so it is recommended to spray the aerial part several times a day or replace this procedure by wiping the foliage with a damp sponge. About once a week you need to organize showers for the palm tree, covering the soil with a film. AT summer period date palm can be taken out to balconies or loggias.

Soil and planting capacity requirements

The flower pot should be small in diameter, but tall enough, due to the developed root system. The soil should be loose and soft. It is advisable to use a mixture based on turf and leaf ground, with the addition of peat and medium-grained sand. The plant needs good and high drainage.

What and when to feed

Organic and mineral fertilizers paid weekly, and in autumn, perennials need to be fertilized every couple of weeks, combining this event with watering.

In winter, a perennial exotic needs additional nutrition, but if necessary, high-quality complex fertilizers no more than once a month.

Watering and loosening

Date palms belong to the category of moisture-loving indoor plants, so you need to water the crop in the summer quite often, at least a couple of times a week. For irrigation, only well-settled water at room temperature is used. Irrigation measures are carried out after the top layer has dried.

Watering must be supplemented with spraying. However, stagnant water in the pan can be detrimental to indoor perennials, and very often causes disease.

Transplant Features

Correct and timely transfer houseplant- a guarantee of preservation of the decorativeness of the date palm on long years. Transplant perennial in flower pot more in the first five years of life preferably every year. Older specimens are transplanted with the replacement of the flower pot every three years.

Plants older than fifteen years old need to be transplanted no more than once every five years. To slow down the growth of the aerial part, you can periodically pinch the top.

The rules for transplanting a decorative perennial exotic are as follows:

  • transplantation should be carried out very carefully and carefully, which minimizes the risk of damage to the root system;
  • experienced amateur flower growers who have been growing date palms in indoor floriculture for many years recommend replanting the crop using the method of transshipment of the root system with earthy clod;
  • planting capacity for growing heat-loving exotic must be deep enough, due to sufficiently long and well-developed roots;
  • when choosing a new flower pot, you need to remember that its dimensions should be approximately 35-45 mm larger than the diameter of the previous one landing capacity;
  • it is very important to provide the culture with a high-quality drainage layer, which prevents moisture stagnation after watering in the soil near the root system.

Very mature and massive palm trees are often not recommended to be transplanted, so if there is no need to provide the plant with a larger flower pot, only the top layer of soil in the flowerpot is replaced. Such an event can be performed a couple of times a year.

Growing problems

indoor palms date plants are quite whimsical plants that can react very “violently” to any temperature changes and adverse external factors. To prevent the occurrence of diseases, it is necessary to provide high-quality and competent care. But not less it is important to be able to recognize the disease in time and correctly, to know the main reasons that provoke their occurrence, and also to apply the entire volume necessary activities.

  • red spider mites are among the most dangerous and difficult to remove pests of indoor ornamental crops that spread under conditions high temperature and dry air. At mass destruction a plant completely covered with cobwebs dies;
  • mealybugs are able to greatly retard the growth and development of the plant, covering it with a cobweb-like white coating;
  • thrips infect the plant in large groups, after which the foliage turns yellow, dries up and falls off, and the house tree dies.

When growing a heat-loving exotic, it must be remembered that the growth point of the date palm is located in the apical part of the trunk, so there is no need to form its crown. plant in indoor floriculture does not bear fruit. As a rule, at home, this perennial culture grows rather slowly, so its height rarely exceeds two meters.

Last winter, I just stuffed a few dried date pits into a pot of geraniums that sits on my kitchen windowsill. And I forgot. The window opens to sunny side, I regularly use geraniums, which is probably what the pits liked. In the spring I noticed 2 narrow sprouts, and remembered the "landing". Gently with a spoon, along with a clod of earth, I dug up the sprouts and planted them in a separate pot. One sprout has died, and the other is growing. It grows slowly: at first the arrow grew, when it grew about 15 cm, the leaf began to unfold. Now the 2nd sheet is unfolding, and the arrow is growing further.

At my work, the boss planted a date seed in a pot, it sprouted, then he planted this germinated sprout in the yard, and after a few years he treated us to dates. Not like in the store are sold, smaller, but the taste is similar. From the tree, shoots went from him, and I dug one for myself, planted it, it immediately began to grow, but dried up the next year. I don't think all soils are suitable.

I also tried to grow a date palm from a stone. Planted 5 seeds, only 2 sprouted. Then I already learned that it is not necessary to deepen it much and plant it in a large pot, otherwise the plant wants to fill everything with roots. In general, nothing worked out for me, I will try again.
