And finally, the third method of removing paint is thermal. This method appeared thanks to the invention of a building hair dryer. This device heats the plane up to 600 gr. After such treatment, the paint, as in the case of chemical preparations, foams and is easier to remove with scrapers.

Before the invention of the hair dryer, people used old irons. This option is still good. An old iron, which is not a pity to spoil, is placed on a sheet of food foil, which covers the plane from which the old paint must be removed. Using the “ironing” method, the surface is heated, and after that, in the usual mechanical way, we scrape off the old layer of paint.

Let's summarize our instructions for removing old paint. Since the area is flat and large enough, then in order not to spend a lot of money it is better to use mechanical method using power tools. To those places where it is not possible to use the mechanical option to the fullest, apply chemicals and then remove the paint with small scrapers. A building dryer is effective in all cases, but you must take into account the temperature to which it can heat the plane and be ready for it.

Removing paintwork from metal surfaces

There comes a time when successive layers of paint build up to the point where they obscure the flatness of the part or prevent windows from closing. When you've reached this point, it's time to remove all the paint to a clean surface and start painting over.

You will need:

Electric grinding or abrasive tool or

Hot air gun or solvent for paint removal;

Scraper;

Combined heart-shaped;

Protective gloves;

Metal container for scraped paint.

Sand grinding

You can remove old paint by sanding it, but the thicker the layer, the more difficult the job will be. This is because the heat generated during stripping melts the paint, which clogs the machine. This option is best used only on flat surfaces where an electric grinder can work great and abrasives are thrown away after they get clogged. The belt sander is the most best tool for this job. It should be equipped with a built-in dust bag or attached to a vacuum cleaner, in order to control the generated dust.

Use of chemical paint thinner

Always use a chemical thinner when you want to varnish bare wood. Heat can char it. Now on sale there are different solvents. Choose one that neutralizes with water instead of mineral spirits because it's easier to work with.

1 Apply the thinner using an old paint brush and let it work for the recommended time.
2 Remove blistering paint from flat surfaces with a firm or special knife. Collect the removed paint in a metal container for disposal afterwards.
3 Scrape the paint off the panels using the combination heart scraper. Pull the serrated edge of the tool towards you.
4 Apply more thinner if necessary and repeat the procedure until the wood is bare

Using the Hot Air Gun

Choose such a gun if you need to remove paint from large areas, and you want to paint the peeled off after that.

Read the instructions before using it.
1 Blow hot air back and forth over the middle surface of the paint until it starts to bubble and rise. Use a paint stripper to remove paint from flat surfaces.
2 Be careful when stripping the paint off the panels so as not to scorch the wood. Use a combination heart scraper to remove softened paint

Removing old paint

Do you have old but still sturdy furniture at home? Of course it's a pity to throw it away, especially if it's natural wood. Of course the view is not the same, the paint peeled off and cracked in places. But this is fixable. Let's see how the old cracked paint can be removed.
Most paints, if already starting to crack and peel off, can be removed completely. The exception is latex paints and latex-based materials that can only be removed by chemical means.

Depending on the thickness of the coating layer and the degree of damage, we will choose a method for removing paint or varnish. On the garden bench, covered with 10 layers of paint, will have to use brute force, with antique furniture will have to be handled carefully.

The most effective way to remove old paint is with a combination of a hot dryer, chemicals, and sandpaper.

mechanical way.

The laborious method is to remove the paint layer by layer from a dry surface with a scraper. The scraper should be sharpened like a skate blade. This is a classic method, but, as already mentioned, it is laborious and also requires skill - you should hold the scraper with both hands and make sure that the layer of wood is not removed along with the paint.
However, restorers rarely use this method.

With hot air.

Hot air breaks thick layers of old paint or varnish, its surface will swell and it can be easily scraped off with a scraper or spatula.

Hairdryer should not be kept close, optimal distance- 10 cm.

After removing the thick layer, we clean the remains with sandpaper - we start with paper 120 and end with paper 320.

However, it should be noted that this method does not remove all the paint, you have to either remove the remnants of the sanding or apply chemicals.

Chemical way.

When working with chemical solvents, use a respirator, rubber gloves and goggles. The room should be ventilated during work.
The chemical solvent of the old paint is applied in a thick layer with a brush, to enhance the effect it is covered with polyethylene and left for 15-20 minutes.

The exposure time depends on the thickness and number of layers of the old paint, respectively, the thicker the layer, the longer it will take, it may be necessary to coat several times to completely remove all the paint. You can try on a small part of a chair (or other furniture).

Residues of chemicals should be washed off with water and a brush.
