How to remove paint from a wooden surface? Have you decided to update the wooden surface? Basic ways to remove old paint from wood.

During a major or cosmetic repairs in residential premises, it becomes necessary to remove the old coating from wooden surfaces. Staining remains one of the most popular ways to finish wood, so it's important to know how to remove old paint from wood.

The quality and durability of the new coating directly depend on the preparation. It should be noted right away that washing off paint is a complex and time-consuming process. Therefore, if further painting of the wooden surface is planned, then it may be better not to try to remove it, but to apply a new layer on top of the old one.

On the this moment There are three main withdrawal methods. old paint from wooden surfaces:

  1. Thermal. It involves the use of various heating devices to soften the paint and then remove it with a spatula or any other sharp tool.
  2. Chemical. The method is based on the possibility of some chemically active substances to destroy the structure of the dried coating. This is due to the content of alkali in the composition of substances. As a result, the material may completely dissolve or become very soft.
  3. Mechanical. It implies an abrasive effect on the coating, as a result of which the paint particles are removed along with a small layer of wood.

Important! Each of the above methods comes with different hazards, so using individual means protection (glasses, gloves, tight clothing and respirators) is mandatory.

Any method of removing the old coating is traumatic, so it is necessary to use elementary protective equipment.

Thermal

This method of removing paint from wood is considered universal. With it, you can remove almost any paint. At the same time, the foundation can be complex from an architectural point of view. This method is perfect for processing large areas. To carry out this operation, you will need certain tools:

  • Gas-burner. It is recommended to use it in cases where a wooden product, such as a door or window frame, can be taken outside. The fact is that you will have to work with open fire, and this may not be safe in the house. The surface is burned with a lamp until bubbles or streaks appear. Then the paint is removed with a spatula.
  • Building hair dryer. In this case, you can work from home. Electrical equipment is connected to the network and sent to the surface. Then, a spatula is used to remove the paint from the wood. While the tool is still hot, it is necessary to clean it of material so that it is convenient to work further. To remove the coating from carved surfaces, you can use any metal tool suitable sizes.

The efficiency of a hair dryer is an order of magnitude higher than a gas burner, while the wood is not burned, respectively, there will be no tanning

Before removing old paint from a wooden surface, it is necessary to prepare it. To do this, clean the coating with a stiff metal brush and brush off the resulting debris. Then treat the entire surface with fine-grained sandpaper to smooth out the resulting defects, and at the very end, clean the remaining material with white spirit or gasoline.

For wooden surfaces, the thermal method of removing paint is preferable. The main thing is to be careful not to start a fire.

Chemical

This method involves the use of various washes or solvents. Wood paint remover can be purchased at any hardware or hardware store. When choosing a material, it is important to check with the seller which composition will better cope with the paint and not spoil the wooden product. Next, you need to do the following:

  1. Open all windows and doors so that the room is well ventilated.
  2. Line all surfaces that should not be exposed to paint remover with polyethylene.
  3. Open the package and pour the substance into a paint bucket.
  4. Wet the roller or brush in the composition (it is important to select the tool based on the characteristics of the solvent used), then squeeze it on the perforated surface.
  5. After that, you need to transfer the substance to the surface to be treated and wait until it works. This usually takes 10 to 40 minutes.
  6. The softened material is then scraped off with a spatula.
  7. If necessary, repeat the procedure.

Liquid Options washes are cheaper than gels, but they are less effective

If it is impossible to provide good ventilation in the room, then it is better to buy minimally aggressive compounds. Working with them is harder, but safer. It is also not recommended to buy cheap washes. Russian production. The fact is that several layers of oil paint are not so easy to dissolve. More expensive foreign analogues do a better job of this task.

Another option is caustic soda. This wood paint stripper can replace other solutions. To prepare it, you need to dilute the soda in a small amount water, then add ground oatmeal to the container. The result should be a substance whose consistency resembles a paste. Then you should apply the paste to the surface, wait until the material is covered with bubbles, and clean it off the surface with a spatula. At the end, you need to degrease the product. Although this substance is safe, ventilation and personal protective equipment are required.

There are a number of homemade recipes for removing paint from wood, but their use is ineffective and time consuming.

Advice! In some cases, the cleaned wooden object begins to darken. In this case, it is recommended to use bleach. To do this, dilute it with water in a ratio of 1: 3, and then apply to the surface. You can also use bleach without oxygen.

The use of bleach for bleaching wood is considered dangerous, special products are better suited for this.

Mechanical

When the question arises of how to remove old paint from a tree, the idea immediately arises to take a grinder and sand the surface. In the case of wooden products, the mechanical method is not always suitable, since along with the coloring coating there is a risk of removing part of the wood.

It is much faster to remove paint with a metal cord brush, but soft wood tissues are removed along with the old coating, so the use of grinder

So, before you remove the old paint from the tree, you need to decide on some factors:

  • Is it possible to take the product outside. During machining, a huge amount of dust and small fragments of both paint and wood are generated, so it will be very difficult to work indoors.
  • How thick is the layer. Previously, it was not customary to carry out carefully preparatory work. Masters simply covered the tree with a new layer coloring composition. Therefore, before removing the paint, you need to roughly calculate how long the product has been used and how many times it could be repainted. If 4-5 layers of material are to be removed, then it is better to abandon the mechanical method. You have to spend a huge amount Supplies which will result in significant costs. In this case, it is better to combine methods: start with mechanical, and end with chemical or thermal.
  • Is the product mobile? Cleaning a chair or any other piece of furniture with a grinder is the right decision. But if you want to remove the composition from the frame or door jamb, which is not planned to be removed from the wall, then there is a big risk of damaging the finish.
  • How flat is the surface. It is very difficult to remove a substance from an unprepared curved surface, especially by mechanical means; the removed material will still remain in cavities, pores and other irregularities. If these defects are removed along with the layer, then the product can be rendered unusable.

Before you remove the paint, you must consider all of the above factors. If the coating is thin, and the product can be dismantled and taken outside, then the mechanical method is suitable for solving this problem. In all other cases, the cost of cleaning the surface will be too high.

You can remove paint without power tools. To do this, try to remove the coating sandpaper with medium grain size.

There are devices for stripping wood by hand, but it is very physically difficult and time consuming.

When you can do without paint removal

Before removing the old layer, you need to make sure that this time-consuming procedure is really necessary. If the coating has cracks or has become too uneven due to the large number of layers, then washing off the old paint from the wood is necessary. In other cases, it is enough to simply apply a layer of material on top of the old one. To do this, you need to clean the coating, sand it, apply a layer of primer and only then paint.

On a note! If it has been decided to keep the grain of the wood visible, then it is necessary to remove the old coating, regardless of the thickness of the layer.

Before cleaning wooden surfaces, it is necessary to consult with a specialist. Chemically active substances and invasive removal methods can damage the product. It is important to remember about safety and use personal protective equipment.

When a house renovation is planned, the question arises of how to remove old finishing materials from the surface and prepare it for decoration. Very often there is a need to remove paint from wood.

Rigid materials such as concrete or cement are not as difficult to remove as wood. Wooden surfaces are soft and easily damaged. Before starting repair work, familiarize yourself with the ways in which paint can be removed from them without damage to the material.

The need to remove old paint

Before decorating or restoring wood surfaces, the question arises as to whether the old paint needs to be removed. The effectiveness of applying a new layer of paint depends on the processing of wood before coating. First you need to inspect the surface to determine if there is a need for its processing.

You need to remove old paint in the following cases:

  • uneven bumpy surface due to repeated application of paint earlier;
  • the presence of cracks and blisters on the wood;
  • different color and texture of the previous coating.

Preliminary preparation and tools for work

A tree can serve for several decades as construction material only if he was provided with proper constant care. When wood is exposed from old paint, it must be treated with protective agents. Otherwise, the newly applied coat of paint will not last long.

Before applying the paint material, it is important to consider:

  • wood age;
  • tree species;
  • the thickness of the previous paint layer (single coat does not always need to be removed);
  • shade of old paint and its texture;
  • the service life of the previous coat of paint.

In advance, you need to prepare the tools for work:

  • putty knife;
  • building hair dryer;
  • Bulgarian;
  • Grinder;
  • chemical-based washer;
  • rags;
  • protective equipment (gloves, goggles, respirator).

How to remove paint from wood

Clear wooden surface old paint can be removed in several ways. The most common:

  • chemical;
  • thermal;
  • mechanical.

Chemicals

You can remove old paint using chemical reagents that are sold in hardware stores. They contain softening ingredients, thanks to which the old paint from the wood is easily removed using a spatula. As a rule, they are applied to the tree with a roller or brush, left for a certain time for exposure (20-40 minutes). After that, the softened layer is removed with a spatula. If necessary, the procedure can be repeated.

When buying, you need to consider that the product is suitable for a specific type of material and paint. If there is a need to leave the room for some time after processing the wood, you can take a solvent-based composition. If this is not possible, it is better to take an odorless gel wash. But even the absence of smell does not guarantee the absence of toxicity of the product. Therefore, work should always be carried out in protective equipment, and the room should be well ventilated.

The scheme for removing paint from wood by chemical means:

  • Evenly distribute the composition over the surface of the wood with a brush or roller.
  • Leave it for a while to take effect.
  • Rub the surface until the paint begins to peel off.
  • Sand the wood from the remnants of the old paint.

You can make your own paste of caustic soda and oatmeal to remove paint. Dissolve baking soda in water first. Add oatmeal to it and stir. The mass should turn out to be similar in consistency to toothpaste. Such a tool is well suited for removing a thick layer of old paint.

Important! Before application chemicals it is necessary to isolate other surfaces from their possible impact, in order to avoid damage.

thermal method

You can remove old paint from wood with high temperature. When exposed to temperature, the paint begins to ignite, is taken by bubbles, and is separated from the surface of the tree.

For work, you need to take an iron or a building hair dryer. Attach foil to the surface of the tree, heat it with an iron or hair dryer, and remove the separated paint.

mechanical method

This method is effective for large areas. For mechanical removal of old paint, a grinder with a special round nozzle with sandpaper or other abrasive is more often used. The paint is removed dry from the wood. This creates a large number of dust. Therefore, the work requires the application protective equipment(gloves, respirator, goggles). It is advisable to use an abrasive or fine-grained sandpaper so as not to cause large scratches on the wood.

Precautionary measures

To avoid deformation of the wooden surface and injuries, it is necessary:

  • do not use open fire;
  • provide good lighting;
  • wear protective equipment;
  • if alkali or acid gets on the skin, wash the affected area with warm water.

Removing old paint from wood is not an easy task. If you cannot get rid of the coating by the methods listed above, it is better to seek help from specialists. They will do all the work with maximum safety and help you finish faster. repair work in home.

Before painting a wood surface that already has one or more previously applied layers of paint, remove the old coating with the help of improvised means. If you do not know how to remove old paint, use the step-by-step instructions.

First, prepare the wood for painting by sanding and impregnating it with a primer. By choosing the right tools and calculating the forces, you can process up to a meter of the area of the painted surface in 10-20 minutes.

The specificity of wood as a working material is its softness (depending on the species and quality of wood). When preparing a wooden surface for painting or varnishing, determine whether the entire layer of old paint needs to be removed or the product can be treated partially. Consider the following characteristics of the paint being removed:

  • thickness- single-layer coating can not be removed. Lacquer (dye) is applied to it easier, it holds better, and the wood does not lend itself to harmful effects once again. At the same time, the creation of very thick layers is fraught with a decrease in strength and density - they are easily destroyed at the slightest mechanical impact.
  • invoice(may not match the quality and functional characteristics new cover)
  • Colour- when applying an insufficiently thick and dense layer of new paint, the old one will be visible or change the color of the new one (for example, the imposition of blue and red colors will give a purple tint)
  • age of applying the old coating- it can flake off on its own. Painting without removing the old layer that is peeling will “make” the treated area bumpy

What is needed to remove old paint from a wooden product?

Inspect the condition of the treated surfaces, the structure and quality of the wood, make sure that the product is suitable for further use. Based on this, select surface treatment methods, dress appropriately (in work, protective clothing) and take special means. Before removing the paint from the wood, prepare the product accordingly (one of the methods that will be discussed later).

To remove the paint and prepare the surface for various operations, use the following tools and a set of materials:

  • chemical impregnation for cleaning surfaces from paints and varnishes
  • hair dryer used for building purposes
  • grinder with a grinding disc or a drill with an abrasive nozzle
  • sandpaper, small spatula
  • means of protection against toxic substances

How to remove old paint from wood-based products?

To safely and accurately remove old paint from wood, gentle methods and tools are used that cause minimal or no damage to the wood substrate. Before you remove the paint from the tree, it is affected by:

  • chemically
  • mechanically
  • temperature

Removing paint from wood products with chemicals

With the help of chemical agents, it is fastest and most convenient to remove cracked paint from a wooden base. In a specialized store, you will find a product based on potassium carbonate and lime. There are instructions on the jar correct application substances on the surface, as well as an explanation of how to remove the old paint. Use a soft bristled roller or brush to apply the product to the painted product. After a few minutes, use a small construction spatula to remove the paint from the surface.

The disadvantage of this method is the need to isolate the product from other household items before removing the old paint from the wood. The applied agent is very toxic and easily soaks everything around (it is best to linger on upholstered furniture and dense wallpaper, fabric upholstery). Removal of old paint must be carried out in protective ammunition.

How to remove paint with heat and abrasives?

Before repainting a product, learn how to remove paint from wood using temperature. This method is simpler than the previous one, but more dangerous, as it can cause a fire. paintwork. The method is based on the fact that when exposed to temperature, the paint begins to decompose and release gas. It penetrates and accumulates under the coating, causing the paint to bubble and completely separate from the wood base.

To thermally to remove old paint from a wooden surface, take a hair dryer or iron, which are used in construction. The hair dryer works like a normal hair dryer, but has very high temperature conditions air heating. In the second case: the foil is applied to the surface, warmed up with an iron from above, and then removed along with a layer of unnecessary paint.

The easiest way to remove old cracked paint mechanically with help:

  • grinders or drills with grinding overhead discs
  • sandpaper of varying degrees of hardness (according to the size of the abrasive elements)

This produces a lot of dust, so stock up on protective breathing masks and a gown to safely remove old paint from a wooden product.

Unsafe ways to clean wood products from old paint

It is not recommended to use an open fire (gas burners) to heat the paint layer. This leads to the ignition of the coating material, and then the wood itself. In addition, some types of wood emit special resins during heat treatment, due to which you will not be able to repaint the product later.

Any kind pre-treatment product can lead to unpleasant consequences if you do not follow the safety rules and work without protection. If the product can be taken out into the open, then it is advisable to do this before removing the old paint from its wooden surfaces. This will help you avoid the extra hassle of cleaning your home, as well as unpleasant odors received after chemical processing wooden thing.

Do I need to remove the old cracked paint from the product at all?

Treating wood before painting further contributes to the effective application of a new paintwork. Inspection of the wood surface will help you determine how to treat and remove old paint, and if it should be done at all. Removal of the coating is necessary if:

  • it cracked, swelling appeared
  • several layers have already been applied to the surface, from which its coating has become uneven, bumpy
  • the previous version was of a different quality / texture or color. This can negatively affect the final result of painting, or the latter will lie unevenly, lag behind, etc.

It is necessary to prepare for the fact that removing paint from the surface is a laborious process that will require a lot of effort and time. If you do not know how to remove paint from wood or do not want to bother with such work, contact qualified craftsmen.

Before making repairs in the house, many are faced with the task of washing off the old paint. The painted surface has low adhesion to plasters, tile adhesives, building mixtures, That's why new finish may not adhere to the previous coating. To the elimination process paintwork material(LMB) should be approached with special care so as not to damage the surface to be painted. In this article, we will look at all the nuances of how to clean wood and metal surfaces from old paint, as well as what you need to consider before applying a new material.

How to remove old paint from metal

Before you paint metal structure, rust and old paint must be removed, otherwise the new coating will look unaesthetic and may peel off quickly. There are three main ways:

  1. Mechanical- the surface is treated with sandpaper or a metal brush.
    • Pros: Economical, tools available.
    • Cons: long, possible damage to the product.
  2. Thermal- the surface is heated with blowtorch until the paint starts peeling off.
    • Pros: fast, efficient.
    • Cons: increased fire hazard, health hazard.
  3. Chemical- Removing paint with washes and solvents.
    • Pros: quick and easy.
    • Cons: increased toxicity, environmental insecurity.

The latter method is the most appropriate, since there is no risk of surface damage, and the work is done quickly, without undue effort.

How to remove paint from wood

Most often, professional builders use two main methods to remove paint from wood:

  1. Thermal- the surface is heated with a building hair dryer, then the old coating layer is removed with a spatula.
    • Pros: inexpensive, availability of tools.
    • Cons: long, you can damage the surface.
  2. Chemical- a special liquid is used to remove old paint from wood. It penetrates deep into the layer of paint or varnish, actively softening it, after which the residues are removed with a spatula.
    • Pros: fast, comfortable, economical.
    • Cons: toxicity.

The chemical method is more gentle on the surface of the product. It is important to note that the solvent for removing old paint is relatively inexpensive, so it makes no sense to suffer using other methods.

How to remove old paint from a wooden door

The door must be removed from its hinges and placed in horizontal position on the flat surface. Before removing the old paint from the wooden surface of the door, it is imperative to free the product from fittings and other metal elements. Thinner or special remover must be applied to the old paintwork and left until it swells. The softened paint is scraped off with a spatula or other tool for removing old paint. The rest is removed with sandpaper.

How to remove old paint from window frames

The window frame must be removed from the awnings, after that, the glass and fittings should be carefully dismantled. It is desirable to place the product in a horizontal position.

Most often, paint from windows is removed with a building hair dryer. The device is set to a temperature of 250 ° C, and then the old coating is removed using a mounting knife and a spatula. Instead of a hair dryer, you can use chemical products, for example, white spirit.

How to remove old paint from plastic

To remove old paint from plastic, use acetone-free nail polish remover or silicate glue. The first remedy is to dissolve and remove the old paint from the plastic: a cotton pad or paint roller is dipped in liquid, applied to the surface, and then wiped off.

Silicate glue is good for eliminating small drops - it is applied to the paint and left to dry. The adhesive shrinks and pulls the particles of the old coating behind it. After that, the surface is wiped dry.

How to remove old paint from walls

The most difficult thing is to remove old oil paint from concrete walls. Paintwork can be removed with solvents, but this is not recommended in poorly ventilated areas.

You can remove the paint from the walls with a building hair dryer. The coating should be heated until it softens, and then removed with a spatula. The main disadvantage of this method is that the evaporation of varnishes and paints is harmful to health.

The mechanical method of removal - using notches with an ax - is convenient for surfaces of a small area. What else can you do to remove old paint? Many people use a puncher with a brick crown or a “ink stripper” nozzle.

Frequently asked Questions

Can you paint over old paint?

If the old coating thin layer and there are no defects in the form of cracks and swelling, then after processing with sandpaper, you can apply a new layer of similar coatings.

Before painting the ceiling water-based paint on old paint, the surface must be completely cleaned to make it even and smooth.

Should old paint be primed?

If the primer is not applied over the old paint, the painted surface will quickly lose its original appearance. It is advisable to buy a primer and paintwork materials from the same company for a more reliable and durable coating.

Can plaster be applied over old paint?

If the surface was previously covered oil paint, it must be completely removed, since traces of drying oil significantly reduce adhesion. In other cases, it will be enough to clean and prime the surface.

You have made repairs, and the old wooden cabinet(or other furniture, frames, doors) does not harmonize in color and there is no money for a new one. There is a way to repaint it, of course, you can not remove the old paint, but the doors may not close and soon the paint will peel off, so you must first remove the old layer of paint. But how do you remove paint from wood? There are two surefire ways to remove paint from wood: using heat or chemically.

You have made repairs, but the old wooden cabinet (or other furniture, frames, doors) does not harmonize in color and there is no money for a new one. There is a way to repaint it, of course, you can not remove the old paint, but the doors may not close and soon the paint will peel off, so you must first remove the old layer of paint. But how to remove paint from wood?

There are two surefire ways to remove paint from wood: using heat or chemically.

To remove paint, you will need spatulas and household electric hair dryer. We direct a stream of hot air (coming out of a hair dryer) to the surface in order to soften the paint. The paint will begin to bubble over time, at which point it needs to be removed with a spatula. Use a triangular spatula or razor to remove paint from pits and crevices. Be careful when working with a spatula! Do not damage the tree if possible.
The second method is made using a solution of caustic soda. This method suitable for any surface, but more care should be taken. You will need: rubber gloves, old (unnecessary) clothes, spatulas, a brush, an unnecessary plastic (cut off bottle) container, caustic soda. We put on gloves, clothes, pour the liquid solution into a container and apply it with a brush to the surface that should be cleaned of paint. You need to apply until the paint starts to bubble. Then carefully remove the paint with a spatula and wipe the surface with a degreasing solution or at least water.

It is also possible to make a paste from caustic soda. Paste can be made like this: we take caustic soda and dilute it in water. When it is completely dissolved, add oatmeal there until a paste forms.

It is more convenient to apply with a thick layer of paint and difficult places. You need to apply it a lot, and wait for the effect. Then remove along with the paint and rinse thoroughly with water. Be especially careful! If the paste comes into contact with the skin, rinse immediately with cold water.

How to remove matte paint from wood

When updating a paintwork surface on a wooden base, it is advisable to completely remove the old paint. This is necessary so that the new layer of paint lays evenly and blistering does not form. For wood flooring, as a rule, often use matte paint special for wood. She lays down very well wooden base and protects it from destruction. But over time, the paint layer can fade in the sun or under the influence of moisture, as well as as a result of mechanical damage. Have you decided to update the paint layer and wondered how to remove matte paint from wood?
There are several ways to do this, below we will try to tell you about each of the ways. Some of them will seem difficult for you, and some easy, of course, you choose.

Wood paint removers

Chemical agent. This is special remedy, which can be bought in stores selling paint and varnish coatings. Choose it based on the type of paint and coating. If you do not know what kind of paint was used for painting, you can choose a universal product for all types of paint.

The product should be applied evenly on the wall with a spray gun or brush and wait 10-15 minutes, after which the paint should swell and can be easily removed with a spatula. Take precautions while working. The chemical has a very specific smell, so you should open the windows and be sure to wear gloves, as it burns your hands.

You can also remove matte paint from wood with a building hair dryer. But this is a more time-consuming method compared to the first. You need to heat the paint areas with a blow dryer until the paint puffs up and remove the paint with a scraper or putty knife.

And finally, one of the most time-consuming methods is manual. If you do not have a special chemical remover on hand matte paint or a building hair dryer, you have to work manually. Removing paint with a scraper or spatula is a very time-consuming job.

When removing matte paint from wood, be prepared for a lot of debris and fine dust. It is best to use a special chemical agent, since it can be used to easily remove old paint and there is no need to putty the surface after it.

Removing old paint from wood

The question of removing old paint always arises during the repair of any premises. Surface coating with paint is the most popular decoration process. Naturally, if we decided to “sheathe” the painted plane with eurolining or similar finishing materials, then you do not need to remove the old paint. But basically we update the surface with just paint, but it falls worse and keeps on the old layer. In this regard, it is necessary to remove the old paint by itself.

There are several ways to remove old paint. They depend on the category of material on which the paint intended to be removed is applied and the availability of the place where the old layer needs to be removed. In the end, there are three types of old paint removal: mechanical, chemical and thermal. But, usually you have to combine several types.
The mechanical version of removing old paint is scraping it off with a spatula, knife, or power tool. Since the surface is not even and has a small area, then it will have to be scraped off with the help of small sharp devices. For example, remove the paint from a carved wooden leg old furniture, it is recommended to use a small glass of appropriate size. Naturally, the shard will not fit. It is better to specially cut such a scraper with a glass cutter.

Large areas are cleaned of old paint using power tools. It is recommended to use “grinders” or drills with recommended attachments. An emery flap disc will easily cope with old paint covered in one layer. If there are several layers, then it is better to use the nozzle with brushes. I, in many cases, used Osborn brushes. These brushes are known for their longevity.

When removing old paint with a power tool, you need to take care of safety. Also, it is necessary to open all windows, if possible. The respiratory tract must be protected by a respirator, and the eyes with a special shield or goggles.

The chemical method, unlike the mechanical one, is not as dusty. But, it is associated with toxic fumes that come from the drugs used. Its essence is that the area that needs to be cleaned of old paint is covered with special liquids that, by soaking the paint, foam it. After 20-25 minutes, you can simply use mechanical tools remove a layer of old paint. If the layers are a couple, then after removing one layer, you must again use the recommended preparations to remove the old paint.

This method is quite costly. One such drug of excellent quality costs no less than the price of paint. In addition, using a paint remover on or similar surfaces is quite problematic. True, manufacturers of such drugs have found a way out. They make a jelly based paint remover that you apply with a brush and don't drip down.

And finally, the third method of removing paint is thermal. This method appeared thanks to the invention of a building hair dryer. This device heats the plane up to 600 gr. After such treatment, the paint, as in the case of chemical preparations, foams and is easier to remove with scrapers.

Before the invention of the hair dryer, people used old irons. This option is still good. An old iron, which is not a pity to spoil, is placed on a sheet of food foil, which covers the plane from which the old paint must be removed. Using the “ironing” method, the surface is heated, and after that, in the usual mechanical way, we scrape off the old layer of paint.

Let's summarize our instructions for removing old paint. Since the area is flat and large enough, then in order not to spend a lot of money it is better to use mechanical method using power tools. To those places where it is not possible to use the mechanical option to the fullest, apply chemicals and then remove the paint with small scrapers. A building dryer is effective in all cases, but you must take into account the temperature to which it can heat the plane and be ready for it.

Removing paintwork from metal surfaces

There comes a time when successive layers of paint build up to the point where they obscure the flatness of the part or prevent windows from closing. When you've reached this point, it's time to remove all the paint to a clean surface and start painting over.

You will need:

Electric grinding or abrasive tool or

Hot air gun or solvent for paint removal;

Scraper;

Combined heart-shaped;

Protective gloves;

Metal container for scraped paint.

Sand grinding

You can remove old paint by sanding it, but the thicker the layer, the more difficult the job will be. This is because the heat generated during stripping melts the paint, which clogs the machine. This option is best used only on flat surfaces where an electric grinder can work great and abrasives are thrown away after they get clogged. The belt sander is the most best tool for this job. It should be equipped with a built-in dust bag or attached to a vacuum cleaner, in order to control the generated dust.

Use of chemical paint thinner

Always use a chemical thinner when you want to varnish bare wood. Heat can char it. Now on sale there are different solvents. Choose one that neutralizes with water instead of mineral spirits because it's easier to work with.

1 Apply the thinner using an old paint brush and let it work for the recommended time.
2 Remove blistering paint from flat surfaces with a firm or special knife. Collect the removed paint in a metal container for disposal afterwards.
3 Scrape the paint off the panels using the combination heart scraper. Pull the serrated edge of the tool towards you.
4 Apply more thinner if necessary and repeat the procedure until the wood is bare

Using the Hot Air Gun

Choose such a gun if you need to remove paint from large areas, and you want to paint the peeled off after that.

Read the instructions before using it.
1 Blow hot air back and forth over the middle surface of the paint until it starts to bubble and rise. Use a paint stripper to remove paint from flat surfaces.

Do you have old but still sturdy furniture at home? Of course it's a pity to throw it away, especially if it's natural wood. Of course the view is not the same, the paint peeled off and cracked in places. But this is fixable. Let's see how the old cracked paint can be removed.
Most paints, if already starting to crack and peel off, can be removed completely. The exception is latex paints and latex-based materials that can only be removed by chemical means.

Depending on the thickness of the coating layer and the degree of damage, we will choose a method for removing paint or varnish. On the garden bench, covered with 10 layers of paint, will have to use brute force, with antique furniture will have to be handled carefully.

The most effective way to remove old paint is with a combination of a hot dryer, chemicals, and sandpaper.

mechanical way.

The laborious method is to remove the paint layer by layer from a dry surface with a scraper. The scraper should be sharpened like a skate blade. This is a classic method, but, as already mentioned, it is laborious and also requires skill - you should hold the scraper with both hands and make sure that the layer of wood is not removed along with the paint.
However, restorers rarely use this method.

With hot air.

Hot air breaks thick layers of old paint or varnish, its surface will swell and it can be easily scraped off with a scraper or spatula.

Hairdryer should not be kept close, optimal distance- 10 cm.

After removing the thick layer, we clean the remains with sandpaper - we start with paper 120 and end with paper 320.

However, it should be noted that this method does not remove all the paint, you have to either remove the remnants of the sanding or apply chemicals.

Chemical way.

When working with chemical solvents, use a respirator, rubber gloves and goggles. The room should be ventilated during work.
The chemical solvent of the old paint is applied in a thick layer with a brush, to enhance the effect it is covered with polyethylene and left for 15-20 minutes.

The exposure time depends on the thickness and number of layers of the old paint, respectively, the thicker the layer, the longer it will take, it may be necessary to coat several times to completely remove all the paint. You can try on a small part of a chair (or other furniture).

Residues of chemicals should be washed off with water and a brush.
