Bedroom for an elderly couple. Renovation of an apartment for an elderly couple: project by Tochka Design studio

The design concept of this Seattle home, according to architect Lathrop Douglas, is happiness. The topic is very close to the owners of the house, Liz and Tom Sharp, as these people are optimistic about life. In addition to beauty and happiness, the owners of the house have not forgotten about functionality and practicality. The couple recently retired and wanted to live in a cozy, safe home for the elderly.

The house is equipped with safe and energy saving technologies including maximum daylight, new windows and doors, insulation and natural Decoration Materials. Among the additions is a new safe staircase that leads to the basement. The builders made a level floor throughout the house, installed a safety railing in the bathroom and a bench in the shower room.
Residents: Liz and Tom Sharpe, retired
Location: Seattle
Area: 155 m2, 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms
Year of construction: 1924
Last reconstruction: 1981
This is a nice bungalow in need of improvement. The couple chose this home because it has plenty of daylight, is single storey, and is in a beautiful walkable, cycling area. Near the house there are shops, restaurants and other services.

A large canopy made it possible to build a terrace and a spacious porch, which changed the facade of the house. Now Tom and Liz have the opportunity to sit on the porch in the fresh air, enjoying the scenery. Several steps lead to the main entrance, and on the right of the alley there is a place to park the car. Over time, if necessary, a convenient ramp can be installed on the steps.
In the yard and right on the porch there is plenty of space for gardening, which the couple loves to do. Among other things, they grow blueberries.

The Sharp family wanted a spacious and bright open-plan home. The place where they spend the most time is the living room and kitchen. New fireplace visible from the living room and from the kitchen. According to Douglas, the old ceilings limited the space and the corridors were uncomfortable. Now you can easily move around the house.

Craftsman style involves making the most of daylight. When the construction team removed the extra walls and partitions, changed the blind doors to doors with glass inserts, the house was completely transformed in the rays of sunlight. The hallway has been turned into a music room, and the new shelves allow you to place a lot of things on them, freeing up space. Through the built-in shelves and cabinets, you can see almost all the rooms.
The main goal of the designers was to combine the kitchen and living room by removing partitions. The wall was removed and built-in shelves and cabinets were put in its place. On this side, built-in cabinets and shelves serve as storage space. kitchen utensils.

After all the reconstructions, including the demolition of the wall and the podium in the kitchen, even parties can be held here, it has become so spacious and comfortable. The new floor is covered with cork and is link between all rooms. There are practically no straight lines left in the house, the Potter Construction team divided everything into sectors, which was not easy to do.

Each sector in the house is multifunctional. The area for family breakfasts and lunches in the kitchen is also used as a dining room. The living room is used as a library or office. Tom and Liz are very fond of reading, so there are a lot of open shelves with books. All shelving and cabinets are made of maple, including a ladder to reach books from the top shelves. There are viewing windows on the ceiling that provide access to daylight.

What Tom and Liz love most about the living room are window seats by interior designer Mark Nelson. It is comfortable to sit and read or chat with guests. The ideas of all team members were successful, as they were based on the concept of beauty and practicality. To the left of the window is an office with a work desk, the top of which is made from recycled paper, environmentally pure material. There are also shelves where you can store the necessary items.

A gas fireplace heats the room during the cold months of the year. The living room is incredibly light thanks to big windows and viewing windows on the roof.

On the old kitchen there was a lot of free space that was not being used. Despite the fact that the new one has become larger than the old one, thanks to the cabinets and shelves, everything here is functional. Designers and builders listened to the wishes of the married couple, calculated how to make it better and more convenient. For example, they installed cabinets opposite and under the stove with large drawers for storing pots, and there is also a place to store herbs, tea and olive oil.

The kitchen has become a wonderful, cozy and comfortable place where it is pleasant not only to cook, but also just to chat. Spouses now easily cope in the kitchen, while one cooks something on the stove, the other washes dishes or vegetables. They also like that friends and relatives can sit comfortably next to a glass of wine at this time, while the hosts prepare dinner. Since the couple liked the main color of the decor, they wanted to apply it in other rooms. For example, for tiles in the bathroom, for upholstery upholstered furniture.

What Tom and Liz especially like is that glass inserts in the door kitchen cabinets. They not only see what and where is located, but can also hide everything unnecessary inside, freeing up space on desktops. By installing a stove and additional cabinets in this area, the designers freed up space in the kitchen, and a microwave and coffee maker found their place here.
Also, to save space, the designers upgraded the traditional refrigerator and placed refrigeration and freezers in the form of drawers working surface. It's enough for two, but there's another fridge in the basement. The design team moved to the eastern part of the house from the central staircase to the second floor. The old staircase was uncomfortable, dangerous and spoiled the layout. The new ladder is safe and comfortable.

A big plus can be considered the fact that all frequently used rooms in the house are on the same floor. This also applies to two bedrooms. Large, roomy maple cabinets provide plenty of storage space.
The basement is a place that still needs to be worked on. Now there is a refrigerator and things that Tom and Liz keep. It would be possible to get rid of many of them, but the spouses have not yet decided on this. Although it can be equipped with a place where children who come to visit them can stay.

Tochka Design Studio completed an apartment project for a married couple of professors. With the departure of the children, rooms remained in the apartment, which became an unnecessary excess, so it was decided to re-plan the premises for the needs of two people. The result of the work was a large renovated space, corresponding to the current lifestyle of the owners.

It will be very convenient for the elderly, as you can just lightly push with your foot, without making much effort.

While designing a small bedroom, select the Chartreuse color bedspread - scientists have proven that such a shade of green has a beneficial effect on the vision and psyche of a person, calms, relaxes, and relieves irritation. But there shouldn't be too much greenery.

Advice№ 4

For older people, household trifles are very important and expensive - some memories are associated with each item. The design of a small bedroom for parents should take into account all the nuances. Next to the bed, you definitely need to put a bedside table or attach a shelf on which old man will be able to put an icon, put medicines, a prayer book, a book, glasses, so that the necessary things are by the bed.

Place a lamp nearby, a socket for charging your phone, and provide for the technical aspects of emergency assistance.

Advice№ 5

Closet - compulsory subject in small room. Later, they will thank you for the spacious design of the small bedroom. In addition, in such a jungle it is difficult to produce high-quality cleaning.

In the closet, all things will be neatly placed in one place. In addition, there will be no impression that the room is cluttered and cramped. Via convenient devices pantograph elevators that lower dresses, suits, shirts down, you can use the closet at full height to the ceiling - you pulled the convenient handle, and the railing with clothes went down, let go - it went up. The doors are an accent of Chartreuse color to match the bedspread.
