What can be poured into the washer instead of anti-freeze. Attention to the composition of antifreeze! Inexpensive, but the most dangerous recipe

A clean windshield that does not impede control of the situation on the road is one of the main conditions for safe driving. In summer, ordinary water can be used to keep the windshield clean, but in the cold season you can’t fill it with water - it can freeze and disable the entire washer system.

In winter, when the air temperature drops below zero, as detergent drivers use a special antifreeze liquid, in a simple way - non-freezing. The cost of store-bought antifreeze is quite large, and given that this product is consumed quickly, the constant purchase of store-bought liquid hits the pocket quite hard.

From this article, you will learn how to make a do-it-yourself anti-freeze at home, consider recipes with and without alcohol content. In this case, the resulting liquid will not be inferior to a store-bought product, neither in terms of the efficiency of cleaning contaminants, nor in terms of heat resistance.

STUDYING THE COMPOSITION OF INDUSTRIAL WASHERS

In order to make a washer fluid on your own, you first need to understand the composition of industrial designs and take into account their advantages and disadvantages.

All commercially manufactured automotive detergents are usually alcohol-based. There are three types of alcohol that are added to the composition of such products:

  • Methyl. The use of methyl alcohol in the manufacture of automotive and household chemicals It is prohibited by the legislation of most countries, including Russia, but this does not prevent unscrupulous manufacturers from adding it to their products without appropriate instructions on the packaging.

Despite its low cost, methyl alcohol is an extremely toxic substance, the inhalation of its vapors in large quantities causes serious harm to health.

  • Isopropyl alcohol is the most commonly used option due to the low cost of raw materials. Negative influence does not affect the body, but at a high concentration in the composition of the washer, it can damage the car's varnish layer. Antifreezes based on isopropyl alcohol have a sharp, bad smell, resembling acetone;
  • Ethanol - the best way in terms of the final characteristics of the washing agent. It is non-toxic, does not have a pungent odor, but is expensive, which is why it is extremely rare in anti-freeze formulations.

Saving money that is detrimental to health or the car is not in our interests, so for the manufacture of washer we will use ethanol.

For those who doubt whether the game is worth the candle, let's say that do-it-yourself frosting based on ethyl alcohol in any case will cost us less than store remedy with a low-quality composition, the main part of the cost of which is the manufacturer's cheat.

WE MAKE NON-FREEZE WITH OWN HANDS

To make an anti-freeze at home, we need the following components:

  • Ethyl alcohol - you can buy at a pharmacy or order on the Internet;
  • Water - any recipe for a home-made antifreeze involves the use of distilled water, since the tap fluid may contain rust and the smallest mechanical impurities that are invisible to the eye, but adversely affect the condition of the windshield;
  • Store-bought dishwashing detergent (Gala, Fairy and the like) - required for effective removal of contaminants.

The proportions in the antifreeze of water and alcohol depend on the temperature regime at which the product will be used:

  • Air temperature up to -5 ° C - alcohol concentration of the total volume of washer fluid - 11.3%;
  • -10.6 °C - 20.3%;
  • -12.2 °C - 22.1%;
  • -16 °C - 26.7%;
  • -23.6 °C - 33.8%;
  • -33.9 ° C - 46.3;
  • -41 °C - 56.1%;
  • 51.3 ° C - 71.9%;

For example, if you are making anti-freeze for use at 16 degrees below zero, for 3 liters of product you will need to use 801 grams of alcohol and 2199 grams of water. We add detergent at the rate of 1 tablespoon per 3 liters of the mixture.

Everything is done extremely simply - add all the components to a container of suitable volume (the same five-liter bottle of water will do) and mix.

Do not forget about safety measures: antifreeze should not get on the mucous membranes of the body, and it should be stored away from children.

ALTERNATIVE RECIPES FOR FREEZING (WITHOUT ALCOHOL)

  1. Do-it-yourself anti-freeze without alcohol - to prepare it, mix a store-bought window cleaner and distilled water in a ratio of 1: 2. One of the most economical recipes, as window cleaner has good heat resistance and is much cheaper. medical alcohol;
  2. How to make a vinegar-based anti-freeze: distilled water is mixed with vinegar in a 1: 1 ratio. It makes sense to use this mixture only when severe frosts occur, since at temperatures below -10 degrees it stinks the entire interior with an unpleasant smell of vinegar, which is not interrupted even by adding flavorings to the composition of the mixture;
  3. Antifreeze based on ammonia solution: such a mixture should contain 35% ammonia and 65% distilled water. When using the mixture in severe frosts (below -20), it makes sense to add 150 grams of vinegar to its composition;
  4. For small mixtures without alcohol, which only contains dish detergent and distilled water. Mixing proportions - 100 grams of detergent per 5 liters of water. It is important to use high-quality detergent here, since heat resistance is achieved precisely due to this component.

To check the quality of the resulting product, it is enough to put the bottle with the mixture in the cold and keep it there for a day. If, during your stay on the street, the anti-freeze has not changed its consistency to a thicker one, and no ice crystals have formed in it, then everything turned out fine and the product can be poured into the washer reservoir.

Dirt, streaks, “gruel” on the windshield and rear window ... Which of the motorists is not familiar with the peculiarities of driving in the off-season and winter period?! Only excellent viewing can ensure safety and driving comfort. Therefore, high demands are made on the windshield washer fluid. In addition to environmental friendliness, high performance cleaning, safety for the car and a pleasant smell, it should not freeze when sub-zero temperature!

"Nezamerzayki"that meet all the parameters, as a rule, are expensive. And it’s not a fact that you can buy really high-quality goods in a car shop that will not harm either you or your car. But there is a way out: to prepare an “anti-freeze” with your own hands, and in this case you will be completely sure of its reliability.

Recipes for making anti-freeze at home

The main principle of the “anti-freeze” composition is based on the fact that the crystallization (icing) temperature of the liquid is lower than that of ordinary water, which freezes already at 0 ° C. Therefore, the main ingredients of the washer are distilled (or purified) water and alcohol-containing solutions. As a supplement, it is permissible to use detergents and household culinary (vinegar) and medical (ammonia) products.

Important! When making a liquid at home, one should take into account the average statistical temperature indicators characteristic of the region in which it will be used. If these factors are neglected, then with increased frost, the solution can freeze and damage the wiper system.

From vodka

An elixir called "vodka" is stored in almost every home for "medical" purposes. This universal tool is also useful for the preparation of "non-freezing".

Vodka is a universal remedy for the manufacture of "non-freezing"

Basic Recipe:

Vodka - 0.5 liters, purified or distilled water - 0.5 liters, dish detergent - 1 tbsp. l., dye (weak solution of blue or manganese) - 1 tbsp. l.

Mix the ingredients in a canister.

The advantages of this fluid are its complete safety for the driver and for the nozzles of the car's cleaning systems. Even in a fake and cheap version of the drink there is food alcohol. And its disadvantage is unsuitability in severe frosts.

As for the pricing policy, this method is expensive, but it fully justifies itself with a comfortable trip.

From ethyl alcohol

Pure ethyl (medical) alcohol is safe for humans from the point of view of environmental friendliness and as part of a winter glass-cleaning fluid. In addition, it is universal for preparing “anti-freeze” in any minus range on planet Earth. The fact is that the driver himself can calculate the proportions for preparing a winter solution, depending on the temperature outside.

Ethyl alcohol freezes at -117°C, so it can be used as an anti-freeze liquid around the globe

Basic recipe: ethyl alcohol 96% - 20%, distilled water - 80%, washing powder - 1 tbsp. l., essential oil(flavor) - 3 ml. for a 5 liter container.

This composition requires more detailed preparation. At first required amount alcohol is miscible with water. Then the powder is dissolved in 0.5 cups of water and filtered. After the alcohol and water "cool down", all the components are mixed. You can add to the solution a small amount of high-quality detergent, neutral to metal and paintwork.

A hydrometer device with a scale of 0.80 - 1.00 g / cm³ will simplify the determination of the percentage of ethyl alcohol in the "anti-freeze". You can also mix liquid by volume or weight.

Important! The volume of the resulting mixture is less than the volumes of water and alcohol separately.

The dilution table for 96% ethanol will help you achieve the desired concentration of the solution:

  • Alcohol 1/0 water - 117° C (pure alcohol)
  • Alcohol 1/1 water -31.5° C (1 liter of alcohol to 1 liter of water)
  • Alcohol 1/2 water -17° C (1 liter alcohol per 0.5 liter water)
  • Alcohol 1/3 water -10° C (1 liter of alcohol to 0.3 liters of water)
  • Alcohol 1/4 water -7 °C (1 liter of alcohol to 0.25 liters of water)
  • Alcohol 1/6 water -4.5° C (1 liter of alcohol per 165 ml of water)
  • Alcohol 1/8 water -3.5 °C (1 liter of alcohol per 125 ml of water)

For improvement performance characteristics mixtures, ethylene glycol or antifreeze can be added to it. Calculate 15 g for each degree of temperature drop (- 30 ° C \u003d 450 g of ethylene glycol).

From vinegar

With vinegar, which is in every household, you can whip up a glass washer.

Basic recipe: food vinegar 9% - 0.5 l., distilled water - 0.5 l., dishwashing gel - 1 tbsp. l.

The solution is mixed in a container at the rate of 1:1.

The advantages of liquid in the simplest manufacturing, safety and low cost. And its disadvantage is the impossibility of using it in severe frost, since the smell of vinegar will spread throughout the cabin.

From window cleaners

As a rule, window glass cleaners contain alcohol and surfactants (surfactants specially designed for cleaning glass). To prepare a non-freeze with your own hands, it is preferable to use high-quality liquids that are neutral to metal and paint.

Glass cleaners are also used as anti-freeze

Basic recipe: alcohol-based window cleaner - 400 ml, distilled (purified water) - 600 ml.

Mix the ingredients in a container.

The advantages of the recipe are its simplicity and the availability of the constituent components.

From dishwashing detergents

To prepare a fast version of the washer, you only need chlorine-free dishwashing liquid. The tool must be of high quality and from trusted manufacturers, not leaving streaks on the surface.

Dishwashing detergent must be checked before use in the "anti-freeze"

Basic recipe: Dishwashing liquid - 1 tsp, distilled water - 1 liter. Mix in a container.

The advantages of this "non-freezing" are the affordability and general availability of its components. The disadvantages include poor frost resistance.

Based on ammonia

Surely in a home or car first aid kit you can find ammonia. Washing agent using ammonia (ammonia) will help out in mild frosts.

Ammonia solution can be found even in a first aid kit

Basic recipe: ammonia solution - 100 ml, purified water - 300 ml.

Ammonia is poured into the container while slowly stirring so that the mixture does not foam.

If the temperature suddenly drops to -10°C, protective properties"Non-freezing" can be strengthened by adding vinegar. in a container of water and ammonia 150 ml is added. table vinegar.

The advantages of this option of "non-freezing" are in the availability and cheapness of its components. The disadvantages include a specific smell, which, at the slightest overdose, will have to be inhaled by both the driver and passengers.

Before pouring the “anti-freeze” prepared at home into a car, it is necessary to test it. When testing, it is important to determine:

  • Frost resistance of the liquid. To do this, pour a small amount of the prepared mixture into plastic bottle and put it outside for several hours at sub-zero temperatures. If the tester did not crystallize, did not become gel-like, then the product can be used for washing and cleaning windows in the car.
  • The cleanliness of the surface when using it. A small amount of liquid can be sprayed onto a piece of glass. If there are no stains on the surface, then the “anti-freeze” can be poured into the windshield washer reservoir.
  • The smell of the solution. To avoid toxic poisoning in the car interior, it is necessary to leave the glass with sprayed liquid in the warm room. It is acceptable to use a freshly prepared mixture if the aroma does not cause discomfort.

If the “non-freezing” does not meet any criteria, you should check the calculations, proportions, water quality (the liquid from the tap contains a lot of impurities and chlorine), the quality of the main alcohol-containing components. As well as the compliance of additional ingredients - detergents, laundry detergents and fragrances.

Making something with your own hands is always tempting. And especially - when there is little money (it amuses the opportunity to save). Non-freezing is not a shortage, at least in Central region countries, and is inexpensive, but still, recipes for its home cooking are walking around the Web. As an experiment, we decided to use one of them.

The idea was inspired by a jar bought by one of our authors in the Samara region. On the label of the printing press, the place of production was indicated ... apartment 116 in one of apartment buildings the city of Tolyatti. So it seems like she's being body-baited in the bathroom.

The second reason for this experiment is the recent frosts, which turned into ice even those anti-freezes that, according to the assurances of the sellers, can withstand up to -30 ° C. And despite the fact that we know how to cope with such a scourge, we want to avoid problems rather than overcome them. Therefore, we will try to make a truly non-freezing non-freezing.

Any composition includes alcohol (the more it is, the lower the freezing point), water, surfactants (surfactants), fragrance and dye. Elementary! The most expensive alcohol is ethyl, ethanol. It is used in medicine, it can be drunk. The anti-freezes that we buy are made mainly on the basis of inexpensive isopropyl alcohol, isopropanol, obtained by hydrogenation of acetone or propylene hydration. It is undesirable to drink it. Methyl alcohol, methanol, from which antifreeze is made abroad, washes well, but in Russia it has been banned for 10 years. Why? Some individuals have tried to drink it with a sad result.

Alcohol and other ingredients can be bought absolutely legally, and we will interfere with the solution for ourselves, and not for sale. Nothing illegal. The standard volume is 5 liters. we immediately reject - to check the words of the former chief sanitary doctor of the country, Gennady Onishchenko, that at high concentrations, his vapors can cause blindness, no one wants to. What remains is isopropanol and ethanol. We take the latter: it is less viscous, more fluid, and in case of failure of the experiment, we will find a use for the remains. Wipe the contacts with isopropanol.

The retail price of a five-liter canister produced by the Moscow "Ferein" is 900 rubles. Do not be confused by the inscription "antiseptic solution" on the label. This is alcohol, 95 percent. Five liter jar drinking water cost 30 rubles. The simplest dishwashing detergent, non-aggressive to plastic and metal, costs only 13 rubles per half liter.

To color the solution, we decided to use the usual linen blue (this is another 31 rubles). It would be possible to take tablets for coloring the water in the toilet bowl, but this is somehow ignoble.

As a fragrance, they used a cologne that was given to them as a gift. Total almost 1000 rubles. However! Now let's find out how many liters of home anti-freeze can be obtained for the money invested. By the way, the most expensive anti-freeze that we have so far encountered on sale cost less than 500 rubles. Unfortunately, high price- not always a guarantee of low freezing point and excellent cleaning properties.

We dilute the water with alcohol according to the table below. Since we want to get a freezing point below -27 ° C, we take 2 liters of alcohol for 3 liters of water. Next, pour in blue and a few drops of dishwashing detergent (they also contain water), spray cologne (a little alcohol) into the jar. We mix.

To check what we did, we left the solution overnight in an industrial freezer that can freeze even vodka. In the morning we open with hands trembling due to excitement. Ba! The solution stratified a little (the concentration of blue at the bottom is slightly higher) and the liquid became slightly more viscous, but it did not freeze into ice. Already good.

Now the most main part experiment - full-scale tests. It's a pity that it's not -30°C now, and there will be no more Siberian frosts in Moscow until the end of winter. You have to be content with what you have.

Pour our solution into the tank of a premium brand crossover and start washing the glass. Fine! But the experimenter behind the wheel for some reason turns pink, smiles broadly, and then - even chuckles! We sniff: in the cabin there is a strong vodka smell with a hint of cheap cologne. Yes, with such an anti-freeze you will only get to the first traffic cop. And even if there is no positive result when blowing with a breathalyzer, there is a risk of a ride to a hospital, to a narcologist. There is little pleasure in this. As they said in the famous sketchcom, "the solution is insidious"!

For the same reason, do not pour vodka into the windshield washer reservoir. By the way, it is now also expensive. The cheapest that we managed to find costs 380 rubles per liter. That is, in terms of money, refueling the washer reservoir can cost more than a full tank of fuel!

The experiment failed, and we do not advise you to repeat it. Despite the fact that our solution did not lose fluidity even at temperatures close to -30°C, at high concentrations, its vapors can cause light alcohol intoxication. And even with a small sniff of vodka in combination with cheap cologne, not everyone is pleased. In addition, it turned out to be very expensive - the cost was 400 rubles per five liters. At the level of the most expensive antifreeze sold at branded gas stations. We could get a solution half the price and without an alcoholic smell, using isopropanol, but does it make sense if you can buy a ready-made anti-freeze for 150 or even 100 rubles in the winter season? And if you buy in advance and at least a dozen cans, you can find 40-50 rubles each!

And alcohol, especially medical, is better to use for other purposes. For example, in a solution for instant defrosting of glasses. Or irrigation intercooler. But this, to paraphrase the Strugatskys and Kanevsky, is a completely different story.

Dilution of alcohol to produce anti-freeze windscreen washer fluid

Freezing point, °С

Water (liters) per 1 liter anti-freeze

Water (liters) per 5 liters of anti-freeze

People's ingenuity is limitless - born various ways and recipes that help protect yourself from unnecessary expenses. Do-it-yourself anti-freeze is one such way to save money.

Anti-freeze base

Previously, ethyl alcohol was used as the base for winter glass cleaning fluid. Now, in the production of such compounds, only isopropyl alcohol composition is used. It has a number of qualities that must be taken into account when working with it in the process of making a home-made anti-freeze.

  • High concentrations of isopropyl alcohol can adversely affect rubber products and paintwork.
  • This type of alcohol is highly toxic.
  • Many solvents and chemical substances made on its basis.
  • Isopropanol has a suffocating unpleasant odor - it is neutralized by adding to the composition a large number high concentration flavors.

What should be the anti-freeze?

  • The composition of the anti-freeze for cars should not have impurities that contribute to the formation of sediment.
  • Since the liquid contains detergents, when shaken, a small amount of foam forms on its surface.
  • If antifreeze is purchased, then it is better to buy it in car dealerships or stores. Buying goods from unknown sellers, in pursuit of low prices, you can pay own health by inhaling the vapors of low-quality fakes.

Making the composition

To avoid fakes that are hazardous to health, you can ask yourself how to make an anti-freeze with your own hands.

For the production of antifreeze liquid, ethyl or isopropyl alcohol is required, which cleans glass well. In addition to alcohol, for a better cleaning effect, one of the detergents is included in the composition.

The anti-freeze concentrate must be calculated based on the winter temperatures of the region where this solution will be used, as well as on the possible contamination of the glasses during this period. Usually ten liters of anti-freeze is enough for the whole winter.

It is very important that the water used in the composition is well filtered, in order to avoid the appearance of salt deposits and streaks on the glass.

Solution check

A purchased or self-made solution requires checking its quality. A little composition is poured into the tank, and it is served on the glass. This process will help to check the anti-freeze and free the tank and pipes from water before the winter period.

The verification process is very important for the purchased fluid. You can immediately smell an unpleasant or suffocating smell. If this happens, this composition should be discarded, since subsequently inhalation of toxic fumes can lead to emergency and even tragic situations.

Anti-freeze recipe

Craftsmen independently invent anti-freeze recipes, using the properties of certain liquids for it.

Perhaps their developments will help many car enthusiasts save some money to spend on other accessories for their car.

To know how to make your own anti-freeze reliable and safe, consider a few recipes.

  • For this solution, non-alcoholic glass cleaner with an apple flavor (it will take seven liters) and regular medical alcohol 96%, about 3.5 liters are used. Its amount will depend on the temperature outside. If it reaches minus 25–30 degrees, it is better to use all 3.5 liters, and if the winter climate is more gentle, 3 or even 2.5 liters is enough.

    They are mixed with flavored glass cleaner in a canister. The product is safe and reliable to use, even in harsh cold conditions.

  • This option uses a household alcohol-based glass cleaner and filtered or distilled water, which are mixed together in proportions of 1:2.

    For example, if you need to make one liter of anti-freeze, you need to mix 350 grams of glass cleaner with 650 grams of purified water, respectively, for 10 liters, you will need 3.5 liters of alcohol composition and 6.5 liters of water. Such a composition will work well at temperatures of minus 20-25 degrees.

  • This antifreeze solution consists of quality dishwashing detergent and purified water. For manufacturing, you will need 50-70 grams of detergent and 4 liters of water.

    The functionality of the anti-freeze will depend on the quality of the detergent - if you apply cheap option solution, it will not give an anti-freeze effect and will simply ruin the glass washer reservoir.

    Don't rush to fill ready mix into the tank, first check the correctness of its preparation, i.e. selected proportions and quality. To do this, you need to set the anti-freeze on the balcony when the temperature is low outside. If it remains liquid, then you can safely use it for a windshield washer.

  • This anti-freeze recipe can only be used in winter time when the temperature drops below 10 degrees, since vinegar is used in the manufacture of the solution. In hot weather, it will give an unpleasant odor to the entire interior of the car.

    When making this non-freezing liquid, vinegar and distilled water are mixed in 1: 1 proportions. To get ten liters of anti-freeze, take 5 liters of 9% vinegar and 5 liters of water.

  • To prepare another anti-freeze option, you will need 3.5 liters of ammonia and 6.5 liters of purified water. When mixing liquids, foaming should not be allowed, so you need to act very carefully. When using this solution at very low temperatures 100-150 grams of vinegar should be added to it. To improve its smell, you can add flavoring liquid.
  • This recipe is based on the use of isopropyl alcohol. It will need 200 grams if it is 70% and 150 grams if it is 90%. Add 4 liters of water to it. Prepared in these proportions right amount antifreeze. It works well at temperatures below 20 degrees below zero.
  • Another recipe using rubbing alcohol, as it is the traditional base for homemade antifreeze. To make 5 liters of solution, you need 4 cups of 70% alcohol (when using 96% alcohol, you need 2.5 cups or 625 grams). It is added to 4.5 liters of water.
  • It is possible, but undesirable, to manufacture a methanol-based anti-freeze. It must be remembered that methanol is a terrible poison. In the manufacture of winter fluid for the washing tank, you need to be extremely careful with its use, to prevent the substance from getting into the respiratory tract and on the mucous membranes of the eyes. One part of methanol is taken, which is diluted in nine parts of water. For a better cleaning effect, a large spoonful of dishwashing powder is added to the solution.

You now know what the anti-freeze is made of, but in conclusion I would like to recall a few important tips which will help to apply and make it correctly.

  • To prevent damage to the windshield wipers, use only distilled water when making anti-freeze. Ordinary water can leave deposits and rust on the nozzles and in the reservoir pump.
  • After making an antifreeze liquid, do not forget to test it with frost.
  • The acquired antifreeze will also not be damaged by such an experiment.
  • Keep the prepared antifreeze out of the reach of children, as it may be dangerous for them.

All recipes are available for manufacturing both technically and by investment. Therefore, it is worth experimenting and making sure that they work, and thereby save some money on their use.

We will consider an example of filling winter washer fluid. Also, this method is suitable for pouring summer washer fluid. First of all, when buying a liquid, you need to take into account the climatic conditions of your residence (what is the average temperature) in my case, I took a liquid that does not freeze at -25 degrees.

This liquid does not need to be diluted with water; it is not a concentrate. If you bought a concentrate, the proportions in which mixing should be carried out are indicated on the back of the canister, and at what proportions this or that will be temperature regime. It is better to take a concentrate, but in order not to dilute, I bought a ready-made filling liquid.

What liquid to fill in the washer?

This is what the concentrate looks like:

This is what regular washer fluid looks like:

Before filling the washer fluid in winter, you need to completely empty the flight fluid in the reservoir by simply turning on the washer until all the fluid in the reservoir runs out. So that in the future it does not freeze. If you want to add summer fluid after winter, just add it, and it is unnecessary to release winter fluid that has remained in the reservoir after winter. When buying a summer liquid, there are no special requirements.

How to fill the fluid in the washer reservoir?

1. Open the hood (it is where the driver's seat is).

2. For the convenience of pouring liquid, you can make a watering can. We take the usual plastic bottle and cut off the top with a knife.

3. We find the washer reservoir and open the lid.

4. We insert a watering can for convenience.

5. And carefully pour the fluid into the washer reservoir until it is full. At the same time, it is necessary to pour so that the canister is in a horizontal position.

6 . We close the lid of the washer reservoir, and twist the lid of the washer canister, if there is still liquid left. We close the hood.
