Construction lime for whitewashing trees. Whitewashing with lime - how to learn from the experience of our ancestors? When to treat with Bordeaux mixture

Whitewashing with lime is rarely used these days. But sometimes there are situations when you have to do it.

For example, renovations in the apartment of elderly parents who do not recognize other options than lime whitewashing. Or refurbishing the class your kids are in.

Where is lime whitewashing used?

Whitewashing with lime is cheap, in addition, lime has antiseptic properties. Due to the fact that lime is a good antiseptic, lime whitewash is recommended for kindergartens, schools, medical institutions.

Lime can whitewash the garage or basement- not expensive, and from the white walls and ceiling it will become lighter. It is allowed to whitewash the walls with lime. After drying, lime whitewash creates a strong film, and whitewash will not remain on clothes if you lean against the wall.

Lime whitewash is used to finish wet visits due to moisture resistance.

Whitewashing with slaked lime disinfects the surface. For this reason, it is used for whitewashing cellars, chicken coops, cowsheds and other livestock premises.

In gardens, the bark of trees is treated with lime whitewash.

How to whitewash walls and ceilings

It is difficult to find a master who will undertake this work now. The work is not the cleanest. For low pay, the master will not work. The payment that he will name will seem too high to you. So, you will have to whiten yourself.

Do-it-yourself whitewashing with lime is not so much a difficult task as an unpleasant one, and most importantly, a dirty one. Before starting work, cover the floors and furniture with a film if it is not possible to completely free the room. Prepare protective clothing.

Lime consumption for whitewashing

The consumption of whitewash depends on the method of its application and on the treated surface. When applying whitewash with a brush, the consumption increases. For brick walls whitewashing will be required more than on smooth walls.

Approximate consumption is 0.5 liters of finished whitewash per 1 m².

On sale lime is slaked and quicklime. Slaked lime is sold in the form of powder - fluff lime, and in the form of lime dough.

Fluffy lime is diluted in a ratio of 3 liters of water per 1 kg of powder. From one package of fluff weighing 2 kg, you will get 6 liters of whitewash. This whitewash is enough for 12 m² of surface, provided that it is not brickwork.

Ready lime dough is diluted at the rate of 1 kg of dough per 3 liters of water. Remembering that one liter of whitewash can whitewash two squares of walls, it is easy to calculate how much lime dough is needed.

Not slaked lime, lumpy, must first be extinguished, then diluted with water.

For slaking, lime is poured with water in proportions of 1:1. As a result of quenching, you will get a powder. If you add three times more water, you will get lime dough. Powder or dough for preparing lime for whitewashing is diluted with water. From 1 kg of quicklime, 10 liters of whitewash are obtained, ready for use.

It is difficult to calculate the consumption of whitewash with an accuracy of a square. Lime is an inexpensive material, so nothing bad will happen if you buy a couple of extra packages.

How to dilute lime for whitewashing

Lime is diluted with water according to the proportions indicated above.

Quicklime is first slaked with precautions. When lime is quenched, a large amount of heat is released, steam is formed. Possible splashing of extinguishing lime from the tank. Rubber gloves, goggles and heavy clothing will help you avoid burns if lime gets on your skin.

After quenching, lime is not immediately used for whitewashing; the solution must stand for at least two weeks. And only after you endured certain period, the solution can be diluted with water and proceed to whitewashing.

It is better to buy slaked lime, because it is easier, faster and safer to prepare it for work.

In diluted lime, based on 10 liters, add 2 tbsp. spoons of drying oil, 100 gr table salt and paint blue. Before adding, salt and blue are diluted in hot water. Salt and bluing gives whitewash whiteness, and drying oil contributes better adhesion whitewash with a surface and gives the whitewash strength.

The saturation of the solution for whitewashing depends on the method of its application. When applying whitewash with a brush, the solution becomes thicker. When applying whitewash with a sprayer, the mixture should be more liquid and must be filtered through several layers of gauze.

Surface preparation

Puttying the walls before whitewashing helps to get smooth beautiful ceilings. But since whitewashing with lime is a cheap finishing option, usually the walls are not leveled or puttied.

So that the whitewash lies evenly and does not peel off after a week, the surface is cleaned and all contaminants are removed.

When whitewashing the ceiling with lime, the chalk whitewash is completely removed. If the ceiling was previously whitewashed with lime, you can leave old whitewash if it sticks well or remove partially.

Yellow spots on the ceiling, left after the flooding of the neighbors, are washed with whiteness. The solution works well for removing stains. blue vitriol. But keep in mind that with further repairs, if you decide to paint the ceiling water-based paint, stains may appear again. Only not yellow, but green.

The surface to be whitewashed must be absorbent. By oil paint whitewash is not applied.

You can’t listen to advice that walls and ceilings need to be primed with a regular primer! The primer creates a film on the surface, on this film the whitewash will roll or collect into drops on the ceiling. This is just the case when priming is to your detriment.

What tools are used for whitewashing

Whitewash the walls and ceiling with a brush, spray gun or spray gun.

Do not use a roller for whitewashing. When rolling out the second layer of whitewash with a roller, the first, dried up layer of paint will not withstand the load and will move away from the surface.

For whitewashing, a special brush is used. Soak brush before use warm water for a couple of hours.

Brick walls can be whitewashed with a regular brush with natural bristles. When whitewashing with a brush, stripes remain. So that the stripes from the brush are not noticeable, the second layer of whitewash must be applied in the direction of the light flux.

Whitewashing with lime with a spray gun gives the best results. Whitewash lays down evenly, lime consumption when whitewashing with an airbrush or spray gun is less than when applied with a brush.

Airbrushes are mechanical, more often they are called manual, or electric.

A manual spray gun is convenient in that it has a long rod and a long hose for supplying whitewash to the sprayer.

It is convenient to whitewash with such an airbrush high ceilings without using ladders.

For electric spray guns, the power button is located next to the spray gun, so you can’t do without stepladders when working.

Whitewash the premises with such a spray gun high altitude difficult - only with special stepladders.

On the video - whitewashing the ceiling with an electric spray gun.

Spray guns are expensive tools. It is not advisable to purchase them for whitewashing one room. For whitewashing, you can use an old-style vacuum cleaner. The inconvenience is that the whitewash container is small - they usually use a 0.5 liter jar. We often have to interrupt work in order to add a new portion of whitewash.

For whitewashing, you can use sprayers for plants. In such sprayers, sufficient pressure is created to spray the whitewash. Sprayers are produced with a capacity of 15 to 5 liters.

Whitewash is poured into the container, then air is pumped in and when the button is pressed, the whitewash is evenly sprayed. A small spray can whitewash the walls and ceiling in a small room.

The sprayer with a capacity of 5 liters has a rod, with such a sprayer you can whitewash a room with high ceilings.

Fruit trees in the garden are bleached, usually, autumn and/or spring. We prefer to do this in May - at the very beginning of the summer season. As a matter of fact, this is the first big thing after a long winter of doing nothing. Whitewash the trees - and beauty. Our apple trees, plums and pears are well-groomed, elegant. The garden is changing, and you want to live, work, enjoy the sun. Trees are bleached not only for aesthetic reasons. In spring and summer, whitewashing protects the bark from sunburn, and in winter - from frost and rodents.

By science in spring, whitewash the trees before bud break , on a dry day with an air temperature of no more than +5 degrees. Before bleaching, the trunk is cleaned of old bark. Paint the trunk and lower part skeletal branches (they are covered 30 cm from their base). The whole tree does not need to be painted.

The layer thickness must be at least 0.3 mm. It is difficult to measure this in summer conditions. We always paint quite thickly, but in one layer.

How to dilute lime for whitewashing trees in spring?

So, most often the basis for the preparation of solutions for whitewashing fruit trees becomes lime. Used in horticulture:

  1. Garden whitewash.
  2. Hydrated lime (fluff).
  3. Quicklime (boiling).

It is important to properly dilute the lime before use. We breed garden whitewash, according to the instructions on the package: pour 1 package (1 kg) of whitewash into a bucket and pour 1 liter of hot water, and then mix well.

AT reference guide M. Zhmakin leads two recipes for preparing a solution for whitewashing trees: lime and milk.

For cooking lime mortar you will need lime in an amount of 2.5 kg, 500 g of copper sulfate, 200 g of carpentry or casein glue per 10 liters of water. All ingredients must be mixed and mixed. It is also recommended to add 1-2 shovels to the solution cow dung for 1 bucket. This recipe does not say which lime is used: slaked or not. I think it's still unfinished.

Milk solution: 2-3 kg fresh lime, 500 g of copper sulfate, 2 liters of skimmed milk are combined in a 10-liter bucket of water and mixed. For better adhesion of the solution, clay or mullein can be added to it.

Recipe with quicklime and glue(source unknown). In 10 liters of water dissolve 500 g of copper sulfate, 3 kg of quicklime, 200 g of casein glue.

Clay recipe (source: tutorial"Fruit growing"): for 10 liters of water, take 3 kg of freshly slaked lime and add 2-3 kg of clay to make the solution viscous. The mixture is well mixed and brought to a creamy consistency.

How to dissolve quicklime?

Quicklime must be extinguished before use. How to do this, we looked out in one of the videos, because we ourselves have never done it. A package of lime weighing 3 kg is poured into a bucket (metal or enameled) and poured with 8-10 liters of water, mixed. The lime will begin to “boil” and the bucket will heat up. You need to wait 40 minutes - an hour for the process of heating and extinguishing to stop. As soon as the bucket cools down, you can use lime for whitewashing, as well as add various additives to it: vitriol, mullein, clay or glue, as mentioned in the recipes above.

The extinguishing method is sometimes indicated on the package of quicklime, but if you are unlucky and the manufacturer did not give you information, here are two package instructions:

  • Pour lime into a clean enameled container and add required amount water. Wait until the lime is completely extinguished (2-3 hours). It is important to observe safety precautions and work while respecting personal protective equipment.
  • According to another instruction, it is necessary to pour 3 kg of quicklime into a 10-liter metal bucket and pour 4 liters of water. Extinguishing time: 24 hours. Then the prepared lime dough is diluted with water until the desired consistency is obtained.

And how to dilute slaked lime?

We are watching package instructions: 1 kg of slaked lime is poured with 2 liters of water. According to another recipe, fluffy slaked lime is mixed with water in a ratio of 1:1 or 1:2.

What is added to whitewash for trees?

So, usually added to whitewash for trees blue vitriol, wood glue, clay or mullein.

  • Copper sulfate is effective against insect pests and pathogens.
  • Glue and clay increase the stickiness of the solution, contribute to its better adhesion to the bark.
  • One of the recipes recommends adding milk - it serves as an alternative to wood glue and is safer.
  • We love watching videos on youtube. One gardener advises adding 500 ml of lime mortar or 1 liter of water-based paint to 10 liters of lime mortar to keep it better.

And for the second year now we have been adding copper sulfate and green soap to the solution with garden whitewash:

We whiten trees with water-based paint

M. Zhmakin in the book “Preparing the site for spring” not only adds water emulsion to the list of means for whitewashing trees, but also recommends adding 5% copper sulphate or 10% inkstone. Such an improved composition will protect the trees from pests.

We also managed to find several videos on youtube where amateur gardeners show how they whitewash trees with water-based paint. In one of the videos, it is advised to add 500 ml or 1 liter of water-based paint to 10 liters of lime mortar to keep it better.

  • Dilute the whitewash for work. If you are bleaching with an airbrush or spray gun, strain the solution. Before adding a new portion of whitewash to the spray gun container, mix the whitewash solution.
  • When working with spray guns, take care to protect your face and hands. It is better to look funny than to suffer from lime burns later. Goggles or a mask, a respirator, rubber gloves, tight clothing - all this is necessary for protection.
  • Before applying whitewash, lightly dampen the surface with a spray bottle.
  • Pour the whitewash into the container of the spray gun, pump air into it. Adjust the spray nozzle so that the whitewash is sprayed evenly. If the whitewash does not spray, then it is too thick. Add water and mix well.
  • The sprayer should be at a distance of 15-20 cm from the surface.

Lime - natural material, possessing unique properties. Whitewashing the walls with lime is one of the most traditional and available ways, with which you can not only make repairs to any room, but also embody interesting design ideas.

Where is whitewashing used?

Suitable for cosmetic repairs any premises, both inside and outside:

  • antiseptic and disinfectant properties make it possible to avoid the appearance of all kinds of harmful microorganisms, mold and rot, therefore lime is used for painting children's and medical institutions, farms, basements, industrial premises;
  • resistance to temperature changes and moisture resistance are important when repairing premises with high humidity- baths and bathrooms.

How to whiten beautifully with your own hands: a step-by-step guide

To obtain high quality and durable coating the following steps must be followed correctly:

Surface preparation

In order for the whitewash to lie flat and not crumble prematurely, the base for the coating must be thoroughly cleaned of the remnants of previous materials. Wash or treat particularly contaminated areas:

  • treat oily stains with a solution of soda;
  • wash the rust with copper sulfate;
  • wash the mold with whitewash.

All existing cracks and irregularities, then lightly sand.

Whitewashing is applied only to the absorbent surface, but if there is a coating on the wall that forms a film on the surface, then it will no longer be possible to cover it with lime.

Tool preparation

You can color with one of the following tools:

  • brush;
  • vacuum cleaner;
  • spray.

When using an airbrush or spray gun, the paint will lay down in an even layer, and consumption will be more economical.

How to extinguish lime yourself at home

For whitewashing, only slaked lime is used, which can be purchased ready-made or carried out at home.

To do this, you need to take the material in the form of granules or lumps, place it in a clean metal container and pour cold water in a ratio of 1:1. In this case, a very active reaction occurs, so it is necessary to close the dishes with a lid.

Do not use plastic utensils, as the mixture is heated to high temperatures during the process.

After the reaction is complete, mix the solution with wooden fixture, close and leave in a dark, cool place for 2-3 weeks to improve quality.

After settling, mix thoroughly, dilute with cold water at the rate of 1 kg of lime per 10 liters of water. Strain through a mesh to get rid of lumps and other inclusions. Ready solution should have a uniform, dense consistency.

The preparation of lime dough is similar, only you need to reduce the amount of water. For one serving of dry lime, you need to pour only 50% of water. Moreover, pour it in small portions, stirring constantly and not allowing the reaction to stop.

How to breed slaked lime correctly

Using slaked is more convenient, easier and safer. It is sold in the form of powder or lime paste.

To dilute lime and prepare for use, you need to take a clean large container, put lime powder or dough and dilute in small portions with cold water until the consistency and density of milk is obtained. For 1 kg of lime, you need to take 3 liters. water.

Work progress

Before starting work, cover all objects in the room with paper or film, as well as windows, floors, so as not to get dirty during work.

When applying white with an airbrush, strain the mixture through a sieve or gauze. Pour into the container, pump in air, adjust the nozzle for uniform spraying. If the paint does not spray, the solution must be further diluted with water and mixed. When spraying, keep the apparatus at a distance of 20-25 cm. The second layer must be applied after 1.5-2 hours.

For an even and dense coating, whitewash must be applied at least 2 times.

Highly good result can be obtained with a brush. After dipping the brush, evenly apply white to the surface. After drying, proceed to re-coating: now the movements of the brush should be directed perpendicular to the first layer to avoid streaks and unpainted tails.

You can enhance the durability of whitewash by adding special substances:

  • soap and wallpaper paste will give the painting durability;
  • drying oil will protect against washing off when processing the walls of the facade;
  • table salt will give a special whiteness and will not get dirty when touched.

What color to choose for whitewashed walls

It should be borne in mind that lime is an alkali, so not all colors can be used, but only alkali-resistant ones. The coloring pigment is added to the already prepared composition. It must be remembered that the introduction a large number paint will reduce the quality of the coating and shorten the service life, so getting bright and difficult.

Lime whitewash is initially white, so when mixed with color, pastel shades are obtained. To give the desired shade, you can use several colors.

The final result will be visible only after complete drying.

Apartment design with whitewashed walls

Lime can be successfully used not only for processing utility and domestic premises, but also for creating interesting decorating solutions in modern design.

Painting the walls in white gives the interior space and airiness. The use of pastel shades will give sophistication and harmony.

Surface care

It is undesirable to wash the walls treated with lime when dirty, they can be cleaned in a dry way. If you need to clean small areas, you can use the crumb fresh bread. Heavily soiled walls are best re-whitewashed.

Safety regulations

  1. Extinguishing should be carried out only in open and free space.
  2. To prevent contact with skin and eyes, be sure to use protective equipment: rubberized gloves, goggles, a closed suit, protect the respiratory tract with a respirator or mask.
  3. Since the process of working with lime is not very clean, before starting work, cover all objects with a film.

Whitewashing with lime is a simple and profitable way, and the walls will fit perfectly into any interior.

Useful video

Whitewashing walls with lime is cheap, easy and very popular. decorative finishes premises. He showed himself perfectly when processing pools, basements, corridors. It is necessary and important to know how to extinguish lime at home, because the quality of the decorative finish depends on it.

Before the beginning construction works lumpy lime must be properly extinguished. The end result of this reaction will be fluff lime of a certain consistency.

How to extinguish lime for whitewashing walls:

  1. Wear overalls, gloves, a respirator and goggles.
  2. Pour lumpy raw materials into a metal stainless container.
  3. Pour cold water, proportion 1:1. There will be a chemical reaction with a temperature surge of more than 100 degrees, boiling and splashing.
  4. In time, the reaction takes place in half an hour. Then the solution is well stirred with a wooden stick - until a homogeneous mass is obtained. After 30 minutes, when the violent reaction has passed and everything is stirred, the solution is left for a day to ripen, stirring occasionally.
  5. The whole process takes place on fresh air or in a ventilated area.

White walls: how to extinguish lime?

The resulting composition is used for any purpose. If you add a little water to it, you get a lime dough, it looks like sour cream. Add more water - milk of lime. The intensity of the applied layer of whitewash depends on the consistency of the lime.

How and in what proportions to extinguish lime?

There are several methods for slaking lime. The main thing is to do it right, otherwise the quality of the final product will suffer.

Lime is divided into three groups:

  • quickly extinguished - up to 10 minutes, half of the container is filled with lime, water is added to the top. Stir gently while adding water in small portions. At the end, pour into another container;
  • medium extinguishing - up to 20 minutes, the whole process is the same as in the first case. The proportion of lime to water is 1:1, but more water not added;
  • slowly extinguished - more than 25 minutes, a little more than half of the container is filled with quicklime, water is poured in a thin stream. If the stones begin to crack, then the extinguishing has begun. Water is added in small portions until a lime paste is obtained.

After chemical reaction not all pieces decompose, in which case they are thrown away. There is another important point: after slaking the lime, it is necessary to mature in a cool and dark place for 3 weeks, then the whitewash will be perfect.
