Coffered ceiling: beautiful interior decoration options. Wooden coffered ceilings Classic style coffered ceilings

In the modern world, for the most part, artificial building materials predominate, which, it would seem, have great advantages over natural ones in terms of ease of installation, accessibility and versatility. However, connoisseurs still prefer to see products made of wood, genuine leather, stone, textiles and other things at home.

The same applies to caissons - voluminous figures that adorn the offices and bedrooms of real aristocrats. Today we will talk in detail about these products, talk about their advantages, mention the disadvantages, and also see how a ready-made solution from the manufacturer is assembled and mounted.

Caisson as it is

The very word "caisson" came to us from the French language, and in translation means - "box". Indeed, the shape of the element is very reminiscent of this object.

  • Outwardly, the caissons can be different, but more often we are talking about a surface divided into equal sections by beams and lintels between them.
  • Such designs look great in rooms with high ceilings, bringing elegance, classics and the spirit of aristocracy to them.
  • When the caissons are made of wood, rather than materials like MDF or drywall, they look very rich. Such a ceiling serves for a very long time, but the price for its purchase and installation will be appropriate.

Advantages and disadvantages

The first coffered ceilings appeared in France as far back as the 17th century, but then they performed a load-bearing function. Today, this element is purely decorative.

However, coffered ceilings owe their popularity not only to their beauty:

  • Wood is a good sound insulator;
  • Like any false ceiling, caissons can hide laid communications - wires, ventilation, pipes;
  • The tree is able to "breathe" and naturally removes excess moisture from the room;
  • Before installation, minimal preparation is made - the rough surface does not need a good finish;
  • The acoustics in the room become very comfortable;
  • Such ceilings can be made very original, complementing it with all kinds of sockets, flutes, planks and other things.

Of the minuses, the following can be distinguished:

  • Firstly, a very high price, which makes many people pay attention to more affordable options like the same MDF. Ceiling installation is also expensive, as the process requires good tools and high precision in fitting parts.
  • You should not buy such a ceiling if the height in your room is less than 3 meters. In this case, they will hang heavily from above, which not everyone will like.

Advice! Alternatively, in such a situation, you can choose white coffered ceilings, which will not have such an effect.

  • Installation of the structure requires experience, as it is very complicated.

Wooden coffered ceiling installation

We have already seen the beauty of such a solution, now let's see what you need to know and be able to do when installing it.

How to prepare

If you have a desire to try to assemble such a ceiling on your own, then we will try to help you with this with our instructions. We will mention the main points and subtleties, so don't miss anything.

  • There can be no question of any work if you do not have a high-quality draft design on hand. Here you can, of course, try to do it yourself, but it is better to invite a specialist who will take into account many of the nuances that you will not suspect. He will determine the optimal number of beams and the distance between them, so that it all looks neat, without getting out of the general concept of the interior.

Advice! Many designers advise to reduce the distance between the beams in spacious rooms so that the effect of the incompleteness of the ceiling is not created. And vice versa, in small rooms, put them less often, so as not to get a visual congestion of the space.

  • If you want to do everything yourself, then consider the following points.
  • The distance between the beams usually varies between 60-120 centimeters, but depending on the requirements of the interior and the dimensions of the room, you are free to change these values for yourself - there is no rigid attachment.

Advice! The last point does not matter if you are purchasing a finished ceiling that only needs to be installed.

  • The following classic rule says that when drawing up a sketch, the caisson lattice is oriented strictly in the center of the room so that the additional elements on the sides have the same dimensions.
  • If for some reason it is not possible to obtain a uniform separation, or you simply do not want to see the trimmed elements on the ceiling, we advise you to install a drywall box around the perimeter of the room, making its dimensions such that all the caissons fit inside
  • After creating the grid, be sure to mark the locations of all lighting fixtures, wiring lines and other communications, as well as their outlets. All this will be very useful at the installation stage.

Now we will give some tips regarding the shapes and colors of the ceiling, because all this is also taken into account at the design stage.

  • We already wrote that the height of the room plays a very important role. See what it's like for you. If small, then you can do the following. Frame door and window openings with similar beams in the same color as the ceiling; make the beams themselves not very high - sometimes people simply mount planks, imitating a full-fledged caisson; choose light shades for the ceiling, which will visually lift it above your head; place built-in lighting around the perimeter of the ceiling, the light from which will fall on the walls - you will get a visual effect similar to the previous one.
  • Also do not feel sorry for the light room. The darker the room is filled, the more depressing and pressing on the psyche it will be.
  • Keep in mind that on white coffered ceilings, you need to perfectly match the details, otherwise shadows will form in the cracks, which will create the illusion of a falling ceiling and negate the previous visual effects.
  • It is better not to highlight such ceilings, but rather direct the light from them into space and onto the surrounding furniture and walls.
  • We use dark ceilings only in spacious and high rooms. They will give accuracy, add warmth and comfort.

We think it will not be a revelation to anyone that the caissons must be properly combined with the rest of the interior. For example, if your walls, floor and furniture are in high-tech style, then such wooden elements will look ridiculous in it.

Although, as an option, you can use mirror surfaces as panels, install some newfangled spotlights, track systems or built-in lamps in the beams, and paint the tree in an unnatural color, for example, gray, and make the beams themselves strictly rectangular.

Tools, material for the frame and caissons

Now let's see what we need to have available. To be able to start installation.

Any suspension system is associated with the main ceiling and walls. If the ceiling is concrete, then you can’t do without a puncher for work, which effectively drills holes in it.

We will connect them with caissons and frame elements. It is advisable to have two pieces - one for a bit, the other for a drill for convenient and quick work.

When assembling the structure, you have to cut the material at an angle of 45 degrees. It is quite difficult to do this quickly and accurately by hand, and such a saw will help out a lot.

For a rough and longitudinal cut, you will also need a jigsaw with high-quality files.

We will make a frame for the ceiling from a metal profile. To cut it, metal scissors are required.

You will also need a tape measure, a carpenter's square, a pencil, and an optional clerical knife.

A good laser level will help us quickly and accurately determine the plane of the ceiling. If the tool is not available to you, you can use the water level.

The coloring thread will help to draw the walls and ceiling in fact, according to the project.

We buy the following materials for the frame:

The frame will be very similar to what we usually do for drywall, and for it we need guides, which are PPN profiles.

The frame will be based on PP profiles.

We connect the frame to the ceiling with direct suspensions. Buy hard products, 0.6 mm thick. The same applies to profiles.

"Crab" - single-level connector

We will use this intricate little thing for the transverse connection of PP profiles.

With them we will connect the frame parts together. You can also use self-tapping screws of the LN type, popularly called "bugs".

We will assemble the ceiling from the Start company.

It includes the following set:

  • Long guide rails;
  • Short guide rails;
  • Cornices-curbs;
  • Caisson knots;
  • Complementary elements.

The installation of such a ceiling takes place in several stages, the sequence of which is very important to follow.

  • First of all, we mark the ceiling, breaking it into sections. As we have already said, you need to start marking strictly from the center of the room so that the distance for additional elements on opposite sides is the same.

  • Do not forget that the maximum length of the additional element should not exceed 40 centimeters.
  • The distance between the center lines (cell size) should be 66 centimeters.

  • Next, using the level you have, we determine the height of our frame. It is very important to remember here that the design distance from the ceiling must be retreated from its lowest point.
  • You can find it using a tape measure, which measures the distance from the level line to the base. The smallest value will be the desired point. Step back down here as much as the project requires, and from the resulting point, draw a horizontal line around the entire perimeter of the room.

Interesting to know! For this ceiling, the distance from the base is 120 mm. This is required in order to bring caissons into the structure without problems.

  • To do this, you can use the level again, or adjust the values according to the first markup using a tape measure.
  • We draw lines on the walls with a chopping cord.

  • Further, according to the received markup, we fix the PPN profile. For fixing, we use wood screws, on an appropriate base, or wedge anchors, in the case of a concrete or brick surface.
  • The fastener installation step is 40-50 centimeters. If the reliability of the profile is in doubt, then the fixation points can be increased.

  • On the main, longitudinal marking lines, we attach direct suspensions, as shown in the photo. We use the same fasteners as for the guide profile. The installation step is 60 centimeters.

  • Next, using self-tapping screws 4.2 * 16, we attach the PP profile to the suspensions. It is worth paying attention here that the profile is not set in the same way as when installing drywall, but upside down.

  • The profile is attached to the suspension at a distance of 10-15 mm from its upper part. In this case, the distance from the ceiling to the top of the profiles must be at least 120 mm.
  • When it is required to lower the ceiling below, the suspensions can be increased or corners made from the PPN profile can be used.

  • The crossbars are connected to the main belts of the frame in one level, but due to the fact that the profile is turned upside down, you need to “cheat” a little with the “crabs”.
  • We also turn it upside down, and bend its mounting ears in the opposite direction. The bundle is made on self-tapping screws with a press washer.

  • Facing the transverse profile requires an oblique cut, at an angle of 5-10 degrees. If this is not done, then when installing the longitudinal guides in the corresponding profiles, it will have nowhere to bend, and the part may not sit in its place.

  • Next, work begins with wooden elements. The cross rails are installed first. They are shaped so that they simply snap into the metal profile. Everything is simple and intuitive.

  • Next, we carry the caisson nodes into the resulting cells and lay them horizontally, on top of the transverse rails.

  • We install longitudinal rails-guides. They are attached in the same way as the transverse ones.

  • The niches remaining uncovered by the coffered nodes along the edges of the room are filled with additional elements. They require additional sawing in fact - we do it with an electric jigsaw.

  • The installation of a decorative border completes the work. It is fastened with self-tapping screws to the PPN profile, in the center of the recess in its body.
  • To hide the self-tapping screws, a decorative fillet is glued on top of the liquid nails glue. These elements in the corners of the room are cut at an angle of 45 degrees.

This is where the installation actually ends. Someone will say, but what's so complicated, but do not forget that we were talking about finished products. The most elegant and beautiful ceilings of this type are completely assembled by craftsmen on the spot, turning and milling every detail, and this is not only very difficult, but also stretched out in time.

Surely, many who have visited castles or palaces that have become museums have paid attention to the luxurious and unusual ceilings. They have square recesses (caissons) and are made of expensive wood. Wooden coffered ceilings give the room a mysterious and unique look.

Hundreds of years ago, reliable and durable technology was developed for the construction of ceilings. It was thanks to this design that the ancient masters created buildings that for centuries inspire delight and awe among visitors.

The system of cross beams was sheathed with red or other valuable wood. As a result, caissons appeared on the ceiling. After many years, the fashion for coffered ceilings begins to return.

With the development of building technologies, it became possible to install such a ceiling in any room. It no longer carries heavy loads and, most likely, it is a false ceiling under which you can place any communications and hide the defects of the old ceiling.

The materials used to install coffered ceilings are much cheaper than expensive wood species. They were replaced by particle boards covered with wood veneer.

Almost any novice home master can install such a ceiling. To obtain the necessary knowledge, it is enough to read this article to the end. However, there are some restrictions for installing coffered ceilings.

Although, as they say, there are no comrades for the taste and color. So try and experiment, and this material will help you.

What is the coffered ceiling

On the modern market there is a large selection of materials for the installation of coffered ceilings. Typically, a coffered ceiling kit includes the following elements:

  •  Metal frame
  •  Ceiling tiles
  •  Planks for false beams

The metal frame is made of profiles and docking elements used for plasterboard suspended ceilings:

  • Profile UD-27
  • direct suspension
  • Straight connector for profile
  • Cross connector (crab)

Frame material:

  •  Short guide rails
  •  Ceiling cells
  •  Long guide rails
  •  Laminated fabric
  •  Fillet (rake)
  •  Key (rail)

Ceiling cells are available in two sizes 600 x 600 mm and 900 x 900 mm. The calculation of the suspended frame and the price of the ceiling, respectively, will depend on which cells you choose. All materials can be purchased at any building materials store.

Installation technology

The process of installing coffered ceilings can be represented by the following operations:

  •  Installation of the suspension frame
  •  Fastening short guide rails
  •  Installation of ceiling cells
  •  Installing long guide rails
  •  Installation of laminated fabric
  •  Installation of fillets
  •  Installation of the key

Before installation, the future ceiling is marked. To do this, using a laser level or a water level, mark the horizontal plane of the ceiling on the walls. The marks are connected to each other with a paint chopping thread.

It is important to know! The ceiling level must be lowered by at least 125 mm. This distance is necessary so that the ceiling cell can be inserted into the frame.

The marking of the axes of the bearing profiles TsD-27 is also applied to the ceiling. Interval between axles 600 mm. Along the marked line, the guide profile UD-27 is attached to the wall along the perimeter with dowels. To do this, use a drill, hammer and screwdriver.

Along the axes with a step of 1 m, U-shaped suspensions are attached to the existing ceiling. The edges of the suspensions are bent at an angle of 90 degrees down. The bearing profile TsD-60 is attached to the hangers with galvanized self-tapping screws with the curved edges down. This is necessary for attaching short guide rails.

The profiles are interconnected by jumpers from the same profile using single-level cruciform connectors (crabs). As a result, a frame with cells of 600 x 600 mm or 900 x 900 mm should be obtained on the ceiling.

Guide strips (short) are cut to size. For a cell 600 x 600 mm, the length of the bar is 516 mm, and for 900 x 900 mm, the length is 816 mm. After that, they are snapped into short jumpers of the TsD-60 profile. This is done over the entire area of \u200b\u200bthe ceiling.

Ceiling cells lead to the frame and fit on short coffered guide rails. After that, long guide strips are cut to size. The length of the guides for a cell 600 x 600 is 2316 mm, for a cell 900 x 900 mm the length is 2610 mm.

Planks (long) are snapped into the long bearing profile TsD-60. The windows remaining along the perimeter of the ceiling are closed with a laminated canvas cut to size. Sheets of laminated fabric are supplied complete with ceiling cells.

At the final stage of installation along the perimeter of the ceiling, a fillet (a strip according to the size of the guide profile) is attached to the guide profile UD-27 with self-tapping screws. To hide the screws on top of the fillet, a dowel is glued around the perimeter.

The result is a structure with caissons and cross false beams on the ceiling. At the same time, the ceiling looks almost wooden. It is possible to build in a chandelier or spotlights in coffered ceilings.

Caring for such a ceiling is quite simple. You can use a soft flannel cloth and furniture polish. The service life of such a ceiling is up to 50 years. To change the situation, it is enough to replace the wooden elements (cells and planks) on the frame.

To make an aristocratic castle out of your house, create an atmosphere of medieval comfort in it, or re-equip your home in such a style direction as the Renaissance, wood coffered ceilings allow.

French barons and aristocrats decorated their homes with them, but now every person has such an opportunity.

Varieties

Caisson (Caisson) in French means "box", which fully reflects the appearance of suspended structures - transverse and longitudinal, intersecting at right angles with each other, form cells in which carved square slabs are placed.

There are also versions not with rectangular, but oval, round cells.

The main feature of such products is that they are assembled from two groups of different elements:

  • constructive - guides, beams, bars and logs, which create the frame of the future ceiling;
  • decorative - borders, sockets, extensions, cornices, which give splendor, majesty to the room.

Coffered ceilings visually reduce the height of the premises, making them more compact and comfortable.

The presented designs fit perfectly into any type of premises, but they are more widespread in the rooms of private houses. They also look impressive in the offices of large companies, being a sign of their successful activities.

Benefits of caisson roofing

The main advantage of coffered wooden structures is their aesthetic quality. Such a product has a wood texture, retains its natural pattern, and in itself looks aristocratic.

Among other features, carpenters-installers distinguish the following:

  • environmental friendliness - when heated, materials do not emit toxins, saturate the premises with useful resins, fragrances;
  • versatility - products transform the appearance of a home, help hide flaws in relation to the floor and walls;
  • durability - the service life of products is not limited by anything, only high-quality service is necessary;
  • simplicity - the elements are connected to each other through grooves and protrusions, speeding up the installation process.

The plates produced at the factory are identical in size to each other, thanks to which they look organic and filigree precisely

Another feature can be called originality.

Note: Depending on the wishes of the customer, the cells of the coffered ceiling are made in different shapes and sizes, types of wood. Their decoration can be carried out according to the sketches chosen or drawn up by the client, which gives great opportunities for bringing your own style to life.

The place of structures in the interior

Wood is a unique natural material, each type of which has its own characteristics. Therefore, before decorating your home with coffered ceilings, you need to think about what effect you want to achieve.

The combination of different breeds can achieve a variety of results:

  • in an effort to reduce the height of the arches, it is necessary to choose darker types of wood - bog oak, walnut;
  • visually increase the internal space allows the use of materials of light shades - maple, birch, aspen, linden;
  • You can divert attention from the vault and focus on the interior decoration using white.

Consider: achieving a holistic picture is possible only with a combination of the color of the ceiling, the shade of the furniture and the floor. The ideal result is achieved or laminated.

You can effectively complement the room with leather furniture and a fireplace.

The choice of this hinged structure imposes some restrictions on the use of furniture. To achieve absolute harmony, you can use classic decorative elements along with coffered vaults. Items made of polymeric materials will catch the eye.

Drafting a project

The main stage before the installation of the structure is the preparation of a special project. When designing, it is necessary to take into account the height of the ceilings, the number of door and window openings, and the area of \u200b\u200bthe room.

During the preparation of the design project, several rules are followed:

  • the lower the vault, the thinner the slabs, panels and frame beams should be, and their shade should be lighter;
  • the larger the area of \u200b\u200bthe room, the greater the number of bars should be used in the structure;
  • in small rooms, the beams should be located next to the doors - this will “spread” the room;
  • the parameters of the beams must correspond to the dimensions of the room.

In the old days, the family coat of arms was placed in the center of the coffered ceiling.

During the design, you need to remember about some of the nuances of installation. So, designers do not recommend installing coffered structures in rooms with poor lighting or with a lot of dark furniture - this will create a gloomy, depressing atmosphere.

Take note: coffered ceilings are effectively complemented by stucco molding, ornamentation, stencil painting, and appliqué.

Consider composition as well. Designers recommend highlighting the center of the ceiling in any way. This can be done with the help of an oval for a third of the vault, a large aristocratic chandelier, stucco and carved plates with a unique ornament, a certain plot.

Mounting Features

Modern technologies allow you to create elements with filigree precision. Moreover, the components incorporate recesses, grooves and protrusions, spikes, through which they are fastened on the arch.

But there is another option - self-assembly of the structure.

Despite the fact that the coffered suspended structures hide the flaws of the ceiling, it still needs to be processed. Therefore, the first step is priming the surface, and depending on the method of installation - with an ornament or plain.

The optimal width and height of the beams is 12-15 cm.

The frame of the future scenery is assembled on the floor, and then attached to the vault with nails. When the ceilings are made of concrete, you will need dowels and screws. After fixing the frame, strips are installed that cover the sides.

Expert advice: cut out the planks of the coffered ceiling only after fixing the frame, so that it is possible to precisely fit the elements and close the gaps.

Transverse and longitudinal beams are installed on top of the frame. Sockets are glued to the places of their intersection - this allows you to hide cracks and joints. After all the activities, the structure is varnished or stained.

If you are using ready-made plates, then you should start gluing them to the ceiling from the center in order to make it easier to navigate in the future. For reliable fastening of honeycombs to each other, rails are used, they are also used to close the gaps near the walls.

Cost of coffered ceilings

When choosing coffered ceilings made of wood to decorate your home, you need to be patient. You can see a truly worthwhile result only after 3-4 years from the moment of installation - the tree will sit down, begin to play and take on a spectacular look. It is for this reason that the owners choose wood structures, regardless of their cost.

The price of products depends on the selected type of wood. The most expensive are designs made of bog oak, mahogany, acacia, walnut. Materials from linden, pine, coniferous species have a more acceptable cost.

In offices, it is more appropriate to mount coffered ceilings without wood carving.

The second factor affecting the final price is the number and type of decorative elements, the shape of the cells. It's simple: the more cornices, extensions, sockets and borders, the more money you have to spend. The complexity of the production of elements depends on the sophistication of decorative patterns, as well as on their shape.

Wooden coffered ceilings allow you to create a completely unique look for the room. But their final price, installation and maintenance features can become a serious obstacle to the goal. Buy and decorate your house with coffered ceilings in the state of those whose wealth is above average.

We offer coffered ceilings made of wood of various species - oak, walnut, ash and other both common and exotic wood: design, production, installation.

Caisson - cassette, box (translated from French). Caissons are formed as a result of creating a complex supporting frame system. The recess between the cross beams is the caisson. Decorative in the coffered ceiling can be either only panels, or only beams, or both: skillful wood carving, hand-made ornamentation, the use of various techniques, wood processing with modern coloring impregnating compounds - all this allows you to create real architectural masterpieces, unique examples of design art.

The coffered ceiling is an elite sector, but today there are already ersatz on the market: plywood panels, beams from various plastics, compromise options - veneered chipboard panels. In terms of price, it is lower, in terms of aesthetics, compromises are good if you want to decorate your home in Kitsch style.

Solid wood coffered ceilings

Wooden coffered ceilings are stylish, respectable and noble.
Wooden coffered ceilings are environmentally friendly, durable and practical.
They save heat, improve acoustics, the breathable wood structure creates a favorable atmosphere in the room.

The coffered ceiling is a suspended structure. Under its elements, you can hide insulation, electrical wiring, utilities (ventilation, air conditioning). The ceiling plate does not need to be leveled.

However, the project can only be implemented in rooms with high ceilings. In panel apartment buildings, where the height of the walls barely reaches 260 cm, the coffered ceiling will visually limit the already small space.
In addition, if the room is decorated in Pop Art styles, a high-tech coffered ceiling made of wood simply will not work. It is good in Classic, Neo-classic, Baroque, Rococo, palace style.

Coffered ceilings: price

The price range for coffered ceilings is unusually wide. The main component of the price of coffered ceilings is the cost of wood. The indicator depends entirely on your choice. For our part, we guarantee the same high level of performance regardless of the budget.

The project may include (at the request of the customer) a lighting system mounted in the structure. Installation in this case is free of charge, but the cost of fixtures is not included in the price of the coffered ceiling.

Wooden coffered ceilings: installation

In fact, the installation of caissons is the lining of the ceiling. The requirements and technology are the same: suspensions are attached to the plate with anchors, on which the already assembled frame is then fixed. All decorative elements are attached to this frame.
As connecting elements use:
  • thorns,
  • staples,
  • rear, intermediate, end profile rails.
Be sure to provide an expansion joint (10 cm) around the perimeter, which is then masked either with extensions or with a ceiling cornice.

You can order a turnkey coffered ceiling from us, buy its elements (including cells) separately if you do not plan to order installation.

Coffered ceilings appeared several centuries ago. Unlike the conditions of that time, now the caisson not only strengthens the house, but visually decorates it. The cost of services has also changed: every connoisseur of this original decor can afford coffered ceilings made of solid wood.
