They differ from other insects, among other things, in that they have an interesting blood-sucking apparatus. Moreover, it is females who have this apparatus, which need blood for the development of offspring. And males are interrupted by nectar.

When choosing a victim, the female blood-sucking mosquito focuses on carbon dioxide exhaled by a person, on thermal radiation, movement, and also on the smell of lactic acid contained in sweat. Also, the female mosquito reacts to light, preferring dimly lit rooms, which is why females in urban apartments are mostly nocturnal.

Therefore, in order to fight mosquitoes, it is necessary:

• kill them
• disrupt the sense organs of females (responsible for the perception of carbon dioxide, heat, lactic acid).

There are many ways to kill mosquitoes - this is spraying poisons, and electric arcs… But from the point of view of the food chains of mosquitoes, it is better not to kill, but to render harmless. Well, plus electricity and poison from mosquitoes are not always around.

And in such cases, mosquito repellant helps to some extent. Which, in fact, deprives female mosquitoes of sensitivity to carbon dioxide and lactic acid secreted by the human body.
