Decorative pillows with their own hands. How to sew a pillow: useful tips and instructions How to make a small pillow with your own hands

We sew a pillow

The steps are given on the example of one of them, but I will give a photo from both pillows.
Stage 1: Cut out the squares from the padding polyester (I take the brand 300, 300 is a gram per square meter)

2 pcs - 38x 38 cm. Next - 2 pcs. - 33x33 cm, 2 pcs. - 28x28 cm, 2 pcs - 23x23, 2 pcs. - 18x18 cm. As you understand, I reduce on each side, each subsequent square by 2.5 cm. This value can vary from 1.5 to 4 cm, depending on the final fullness of the pillow and your subsequent experience. I posted my experience

It looks like this.

This is for a different pillow - there were more layers, I wanted a little thicker.

You have two pyramids, now you need to turn one of them over and connect, like this ...

Stage 2: We fix this structure around the perimeter.

And we sew ... I'm on my hands, it's more convenient for me. Do you feel pot-bellied, lively, I would say? Like candy pads.

Step 3: This is the case. We sew with you a luxury pillow.
From cotton fabric and cotton filler for quilts (M 100) I cut out two squares 40x40 cm (1 cm allowances for seams on all sides). I draw stitch lines with a chalk pencil and fasten the materials in pairs. /Cotton filler for quilts is a wonderful material, but you can also replace it with a thin padding polyester, if it is at hand./

We scribble along the marked lines, as the soul likes and the machine allows.

Stage 4: We connect, adjust, sew (we left 1 cm on each side as an allowance!), Leaving a distance unsewn, convenient for further immersion of the pillow in the cover, cut the corners.

Home is a place where you need to return with pleasure. To do this, we equip it to our liking, create our own small world. Décor is an integral part of a comfortable home, and even more fun is the decorations created by with my own hands. Today we will look at .

It's about a simple sofa cushion square shape. In addition to the pillow itself stuffed with holofiber, we will show in detail how sew a pillowcase.

For the inside of the pillow, we need:

  • fabric rectangle 45x70 cm;
  • holofiber stuffing - 0.5 kg.

For the pillowcase, prepare:

  • leatherette - 47x47 cm;
  • upholstery fabric for sofas, red - 47x47 cm;
  • plastic snake, more than 50 cm long.

To be honest, this pillow was assembled from materials that lay in the "what's left" basket. Those. I didn’t pick up fabric on purpose, but sewed from what I already had, and what I wanted to realize at least into something, so in the process of sewing I ran into some difficulties that I had to solve on the go.

How to sew a pillow

So, inner part pillows. We take a rectangle of fabric 45x70 cm and fold it in half, thereby allowing ourselves not to sew one side. From one edge, we sew two halves, stepping back from the fold 1/3 of the length. We sew to this very fold. Then, stepping back from the 2/3 fold, we sew the entire pillow along the contour. Thus, we leave ourselves a hole for stuffing. I like it when my fist passes freely into the opening of the bag, with the expectation that the filler will be clamped in it. Pushing stuffing through a small hole is a dubious pleasure.

As for stuffing - I tried different variants. The most frequent, which, unfortunately, the majority uses is stuffing with padding polyester. I don't like it for two reasons:

- a synthetic winterizer soars (although this is not critical for a sofa cushion);

- he's sagging. Those. after a while, the pillow will lose its elastic appearance and become more like a bedding. Even stuffing with a “pyramid” does not help (folding layers of synthetic winterizer of different sizes on top of each other from larger to smaller to the center and from smaller to larger to the top)

Therefore, I prefer holofiber. It is a pellet of approximately the same size, does not crumble, even if thrown, which shows a good connection between the internal fibers. At the same time, each spool is easy to separate from its neighbor, which allows you to adjust the amount of stuffing. We can buy by weight any required amount or order on a specialized website.

The fabric for the inner pillow came across to me frankly bad, it was very fraying around the edges. I had to sew it in three stages:

- straight line along the contour;

- zigzag over a straight stitch;

- overlock the edge.

There were attempts to overlock the edges of the fabric separately, but they fell along with the overlock threads. On two layers of fabric, everything kept perfectly. Therefore, it turns out that the edges of the fabric in the place of the hole are not overlocked. Be careful with them.

After we have a bag on our hands, we turn it inside out and start stuffing it, after straightening the corners from the inside.

After you have reached the desired density in the stuffing, we sew up the hole by hand.

The inner pillow is ready.

How to sew a pillowcase

We will sew a pillowcase from two squares and a snake. The red fabric is overlocked at the edges, the leatherette square is not.

The snake can be of any length, the main thing is that it is longer than the side of the square. I had one meter-long snake with two dogs, which I divided into two.

We sew the snake to one square, putting them face to face. We sew the snake with a one-sided foot. Take care of your fingers!

Then, in the same way, we sew the second square, we get a snake between the two edges of the pillowcase.

We begin to sew up the contours of the pillowcase. I started from one corner and went to the snake. Having separated the two sides of the snake as in the photo, we wrap it, as it were, inside. If you do not open the snake, you will get a dog outside and you will have to rip it apart, there are no other options.

Sew slowly and carefully. Wear construction or other protective goggles, especially if you have a metal snake. A piece of needle flying off in the face is a dangerous business.

We repeat the same on the other side. We also fold the snake.

Sew up the bottom of the pillowcase.

We twist, measure the already finished and stuffed pillow. She shouldn't walk around in a pillowcase. The sofa cushion is usually rigid, there is no room for unfilled corners in it. If the pillowcase turned out to be larger - we turn it inside out, measure how much it needs to be taken in, mark with chalk. Remove the pillowcase from the pillow and sew, evenly on each side

We measure again after straightening the corners. To better stretch the corners, it is best to use a large, hard needle.

Our pillow is ready.

Search the internet for design ideas sofa cushions. They don't have to be all identical, even on the same couch.

This is what our pillow looks like from the leatherette side:

The form

Sofa cushions are different. One of the most popular types is the "dumka". This ordinary pillow has a square, round and rectangular shape, has small dimensions: edges from twenty to forty centimeters. It can be used as a soft padding on the seat of a chair or against the back. A modern thought can be of absolutely any kind - from classical to form. fairy tale characters, animals, bottles, transport.

The classic shape of the dumka is square, round, rectangular. But there are other, unusual and interesting options:

  1. Sectional - parts are connected using side inserts of different stiffness, used on wicker furniture.
  2. Turkish - with oriental ornaments, folds in the corners, rounded shape.
  3. Quilted - the model is decorated with decorative stitching on one or two sides.
  4. Oxford - decorated with a border, tassels.
  5. Dumka-roller - the most common type.
  6. Non-standard shapes - flowers, letters, in the form of animals, etc.

Filler

The sofa cushion should be soft, pleasant to the touch. The filler is important. In addition to comfort, you need to consider its hypoallergenic properties. When choosing the filling of an accessory, you immediately need to exclude old fabric items or cotton wool. These materials get knocked down over time, form hard lumps. Best Options: synthetic winterizer, fibertek, foam rubber, holofiber, down. foam or synthetic filler pillows are characterized by the absence of allergic properties, softness.

Textile

The first step in tailoring a dumochka is the choice of fabric. The material must be durable. Beginners are advised to choose simpler fabrics, such as chintz, cotton. In the manufacture of pillows, fabrics such as silk, linen, felt, denim, calico, baize, and upholstery are often used. Sometimes to create knitted pillows an old knitted sweater, a voluminous pullover is used. The most important thing is that the colors of the material are durable, the surface is dense and does not allow the filler to fall out.

Each type of fabric used has its pros and cons:

  1. Flax - does not cause irritation, resistant, "breathes". Minus: easily wrinkled, a little harsh, quickly shrinks.
  2. Silk is durable, pleasant, wear-resistant (withstands washing at 110 degrees), and is breathable. Cons: Expensive, wears out quickly.
  3. Chintz - breathable, easy to care for. Weaknesses: short-lived, afraid high temperatures, easy to wrinkle and shrink.

Thicker fabrics have their own characteristics. These include firth, jeans, bike.

  1. Felt - wide color palette, easy to work, no front or wrong side, composition: 90-100% wool. Minus: afraid of high temperatures, may lose shape if washed incorrectly, spools appear.
  2. Denim (denim) - durable, breathable, eco-friendly, fashionable. Disadvantages: shrinks after washing, hardens, fades.
  3. The bike is hypoallergenic, low cost, practical, tactilely pleasant. Minus: inelasticity, difficulty in sewing (shrinks).

When sewing decorative pillows you can combine fabrics: for example, one part is made of silk, the other is made of felt, resulting in a “winter-summer” option. Inserts from several types of fabric look beautiful. If the material has become unusable, there is no need to rush to throw away the idea - the sewn colored patch will not spoil appearance. Give a zest to the furniture of the thought different sizes from colored upholstery fabric.

Pillow decor

To decorate ready-made pillows for furniture, you can choose any decorations you like. Various accessories, appliqué, embroidery will look great. It looks interesting thought in the style of "patchwork", sewn from knitted things. The finished dumka is decorated with soft decorative elements: braid, flap, ribbon, less often zippers, beads, buttons are used.

The design of the product is carried out by any means. The most common decoration options:

  1. Application and printing. Photo printing is available today, the image is stable and of high quality. Printed flaps can act as parts of the application.
  2. The key element is the center of the decoration: a simple button, one or framed with fabric, tassels, pompoms, etc.
  3. Knitting, embroidery, lace can give an interesting and very expensive look.
  4. Relief decor - bows, flowers, fringe, puffs.

How to sew a pillow on a sofa with your own hands

If an experienced needlewoman is able to sew a pillow without much difficulty, then beginners need to know the principles and sequence of work. The first thing to do is prepare everything you need to work. Beautiful sofa cushions are made in two stages:

  1. Sewing of the thought itself, work with the selected filler.
  2. Making a pillowcase or cover for it.

First you need to prepare a set necessary tools and materials:

  • sewing machine;
  • dense fabric for the breastplate - satin, coarse calico;
  • stuffing;
  • tailor's centimeter, pencil or chalk for marking fabric;
  • scissors, needle, pins, thread.
  • cardboard, pattern paper, diagrams, ruler,
  • decor materials;
  • hoop, special threads or knitting needles, if you plan to do embroidery or knitted items.

When all the materials and tools are collected, the idea of \u200b\u200ba pillow for the sofa is ready, you need to move on to the sewing process.

  1. You need to decide on the size, shape. Suppose that the thought is square, 45x45 cm.
  2. On the wrong side of the fabric, draw 2 identical squares. Add 2 cm around the perimeter for seams.
  3. Fold the squares right side inward, pierce the lines with pins so that the fabric does not slip. Cut out every detail.
  1. Sew three sides, stepping back from the edge of each by 2 cm. You can scribble on pins, this will not interfere with the machine needle, but will prevent the fabric from slipping.
  2. Bend the seam allowances to one side and iron, turn the lining outwards.
  3. Fill the resulting bag with filler, manually sew up the hole, bending the seams inward.

How to sew a pillowcase for a sofa cushion

To sew pillowcases for sofa cushions from the fabric that will be outside, you need to cut out square pieces a little bigger size. The base was 45x45 cm, which means that the removable cover is 46x46 centimeters. A case that is too small will not fit over a stuffed bag or make it hard. It is best to cut out the main details (sides of sofa cushions) from different fabrics: a pattern, texture on one side will make it front, simpler material on the other - wrong side. Do not forget to leave seam allowances of 1-1.5 cm.

The sequence of making a pillowcase is similar to the process of working on a pillowcase:

  1. Fold the cut pieces face inward.
  2. Chip with pins (photo).
  3. Sew with machine stitch around the perimeter on three sides. For strength, it is recommended to make 2-3 lines.
  4. All seams are ironed.
  5. Excess tissue is cut at a distance of at least 3 mm from the seam.

After the product is turned on the front side, the corners are additionally formed. This is done with a needle: the fabric is gently pulled to the desired sharpness of the angle:

  1. The edges of the 4th side are folded inward by 1-1.5 cm, ironed.
  2. A thought is inserted into the case, everything is aligned, adjusted in the corners.
  3. The hole is sewn up by hand with a hidden seam.

At the stage of sewing a pillowcase, it can be decorated with braid, scallops, a combined cover, borders, buttons, etc. When deciding on the decor, the first thing you need to pay attention to is the quality, the color of the threads. They must be ideal not only for color scheme, but also in density, thickness. For example, denim, raincoat fabric involves the use of threads No. 40 (for finishing seams, dense fabrics), calico, flannel, bike - No. 60 (for linen and light materials), silk, cambric, chintz - No. 80 (for thin fabrics) .

Decorative braid is sewn to the pillowcase from the front side before stitching the 4th side and putting on the cover on the breastplate. This is done manually:

  1. Decorative ribbons of any width are sewn to each side along the edges of the thought.
  2. Attached to the bases (squares) on the front side with the help of simple seam all decorative items.
  3. The pillow is sewn together, while the seams that fasten the tapes are tucked inward.
  4. If the braid is not located along the edge, but on one of the bases, you can attach it before the sides of the pillow are sewn.

For finishing with borders, squares are cut out with a large margin. The stock width is equal to the width of the borders plus 2 cm for seam allowances:

  1. First, borders are sewn along the edge on three sides.
  2. The cover is then flipped over.
  3. The line is made according to the size of the thought, also on three sides.
  4. The finished pillowcase is inserted into the hole.
  5. To close it, a line is drawn along the fourth side, slightly retreating from the edge of the thought inserted inside.
  6. The last part of the border is processed: the edges are folded inward, ironed.
  7. They are sewn by hand with a hidden seam.

A pillow with scallops is made according to a different principle. Festoon is decorative element, an ornamental strip with a downward-facing pattern in the form of leaves, flowers, stepped teeth, waves. First, all the details are made, then they are assembled together. Fabric scallops are jagged, rectangular, rounded. Solid or contrasting fabrics are used. You will need material for finishing (scallops), bases (squares for covers), a zipper, a compass or a glass to draw the edges, a regular sewing kit.

Work begins with marking the details:

  1. Make a cutout. Leave 1-1.5 cm on the seams. Step back from the edges of the fabric so much that after cutting out the squares, 10-11 cm are left in stock.
  2. Cut out the resulting squares. The remaining fabric with the square hole will be used to mark and cut out the scallops.
  3. Mark the paper for the scallops. Smooth and identical edges will help to make a glass or a compass. Cut everything.
  4. Pin the resulting template with pins around the perimeter to the edges of the fabric left over from cutting out the squares. Cut according to the drawing.

After that, he proceeds to processing and grinding the edges of the scallops:

  1. Lay the cut pieces together face inward.
  2. Sew with a machine along wavy lines (edges of scallops).
  3. Trim the pattern, from the seams at least 3 mm. Turn face out.
  4. To align the edges, make a line on all sides of the scallops. This should be done from the outside, but very carefully and evenly.
  5. The resulting trim is sewn to the main part: the edges of the square are folded inward, superimposed on the scallop.

Each square is sewn on the front side from 3 sides. Further, the process is normal: a pillow is inserted inside. The fabric is leveled, the corners are straightened. The fourth side can be sewn with a machine immediately on top. But it is better to insert a zipper into it first. The fastener may not necessarily be sewn around the perimeter, sometimes it is sewn directly into the square.

Sewing decorative pillows starts with an idea. The main thing is to burn with desire, and then master the technology.

Small pillows can be placed under the back or legs

Depending on your capabilities and preferences, the pillows can be decorated as follows:

  • Application. Ribbons, yarn, lace, shreds of fabric, fringe, buttons, sequins are used here. All elements are systematically sewn onto a pillowcase, creating a planned composition. Thus, it is possible to recreate natural ornaments, flowers, abstraction, images of animals and birds.
  • Prints and inscriptions. Modern quality printing on fabric allows you to clearly convey any pictures, photographs and imitations. You can arrange a group of pillows with different prints in a certain style or combine a print with an appliqué.
  • Acrylic paints. You can show your artistic talent even in decorating a pillow. Acrylic paints on fabric adhere well and look very impressive. The created pattern can be supplemented with stripes and other decorations.
  • Embroidery and knitting. Such products are the most practical, sincere and original. They hold up well to washing and last for many years.
  • Pleats and puffs. This is the most time-consuming and sophisticated way to decorate. It will take a lot of fabric and time. The production of puffs consists of collecting folds according to a strictly geometric pattern. The result is an elegant, romantic and luxurious interior element, such as a decorative pillow for a bedroom.

Elegant and romantic pillows

  • Patchwork. For this, various shreds of fabric are used, which are sewn together into one canvas. The color scheme can be sustained both in one style and be absolutely contrasting. The same applies to the structure of the fabric - you can combine anything, as long as it is harmonious.
  • Knitwear. Even stretchy knitwear can be a cute pillow. You just need to take a cute blouse or T-shirt of a child, from which he grew up a long time ago, stuff it with filler and sew up all the holes.
  • Form variations. If the bored classical rectangular shape not for you, more expressive options for the interior can be triangular, round pillows, hearts, letters, numbers, products in the form of toys and figurines, stone pillows, rollers. They even came up with hug pillows and comfortable pillows for pregnant and lactating women. For such variations, you need to make a pattern on paper, transfer it to fabric, then proceed according to standard technology.
  • Key focus. Sometimes a pillow can be quite modest - plain, not too colorful, not too expressive, with small stripes or polka dots. Adding zest and correcting the situation is very easy due to the key element. It can be pompoms, brushes, a large button, a border. This technique will make a simple padding polyester pillow a self-sufficient element of the interior.

Pillow tailoring

The first thing to think about when making throw pillows is how to care for them afterwards. Important role literally everything plays: fabric, filler and decorative details.

You can sew a pillow of any size and shape

Please note that if the pillow has a base, then the pillowcase can be easily removed and washed without leaving half of the flowers and bows in the machine. If it is without a base, then it should also be easy to clean. It is possible to consider how easy it is to remove the packing.

Of course, a sleeping pillow should not contain any relief elements, locks and decorations.

Small padding pillow

For children's room better pillow do not sew with small parts that a child can chew off, tear off or get hurt by them. Here interior pillows give more freedom for rampant fantasy. But even so, it is worth considering that many of us like to fall asleep in the living room in front of the TV. Imagine imprints of buttons, beads or lace patterns on your face and this will be the last convincing argument in favor of conciseness and practicality. And most likely at this point you will already have an idea of what kind of pillow you want to sew with your own hands.

fabrics

How to sew a pillow that is durable, practical, beautiful and original largely depends on the fabric. Choose a material that you feel comfortable working with and that your ideas are consistent with. It can be linen, cotton, silk, calico, baize, felt, knitwear, burlap, satin, crepe, denim and fleece.

Fabrics for pillows are better to choose natural

Furniture upholstery is perfect for these purposes. It is not recommended to use stretch fabrics, which can turn all your efforts into an extended misunderstanding.

natural fabrics

But it is not at all necessary to immediately run to the fabric store, sometimes brilliant ideas can be found without leaving home. Feel sorry for throwing away an old worn sweater or a favorite shirt that is torn? Is there a way to make them original pillow. Old clothes, jeans, scraps of fabric are great materials for this.

Needlewomen who know how to knit and embroider do not have to worry about the design of their creation at all - such covers will be the warmest and brightest.

Stuffing

Nowadays, there are excellent hypoallergenic stuffing materials that do not lose their shape and elasticity over the years, which are ideal for stuffing any pillows. These include:

  • sintepukh;
  • firetech;
  • holofider.

Sintepon and foam rubber tend to lose shape a little, but it is quite suitable for decorative pillows.

Pillow fillers

You can also use fur or pieces of fabric for stuffing. Especially if the pillow is not even in shape, large in volume and made of coarse material.

Separately, we can say about silicone granules. Not only do they not get wet, they are easy to wash, they fall asleep through a small pillowcase opening, pillows with such a filler can be called anti-stress. Touching them relaxes and provides a carefree sleep.

Feather pillow

How to sew a pillowcase

Not the most difficult task to sew a pillowcase is to make a pattern right size plus leave a few centimeters for the hem, sew two canvases from the wrong side and turn them on the front. Of great concern last seam, which we need to flash from the front side after stuffing.The best solution would be a sewn-in zipper.

Pillow decor can be changed thanks to a removable cover with a clasp

There will be no problems with knitted, knitted and lace products at all - the last seam will be invisible. In an original way, you can mask the last seam with a narrow or wide edging to match the product. You can embroider a border around the edges, and close the seam with the same threads.

It is ideal to leave a hole of 4-5 cm on the front side, through which to fill the prepared cover with sintepuh or silicone granules.

Pillowcase with zipper

Just be sure to make sure that the filler is not enough. Very often, the corners of the base are not packed tightly enough, as a result of which they sag and the aesthetic appearance of the product is lost.

Seamless pillowcases

It is quite possible to make a beautiful interior item without a needle and thread.

  • Take a fabric or a beautiful large scarf, wrap a pillow around it and tie the edges into a knot. A flower made of fabric or a colored button can enrich a simple knot a little.
  • In a similar way, wrap the pillow with a cloth on four sides, glue the last free edge with glue.
  • Simple and creative - a pillow with ties. From the main size of the canvas, we leave another 10-15 cm of stock on each side. We cut them into strips, they will be our ties, instead of seams. Also, it may not be small ties, but large bows.

  2. Sew a rectangular piece of fabric to them with the right side inward so that you get a cylinder.
  3. Turn the pillow inside out and tamp it tightly with filler, sewing up the hole by hand.
  4. From a pillowcase fabric that is 15 cm wider than the pillow, sew a cylinder of the same diameter as the pillow.
  5. Double fold over both edges and sew.
  6. Put the pillowcase over the cylinder pillow and tie the edges with laces, as shown in the photo.
