Do-it-yourself snowplow from a chainsaw. How to make a snow blower from a chainsaw with your own hands

Now the market for small backyard equipment offers a large number of snow blowers, both in the form of attachments to walk-behind tractors, and in the form of a completely separate mechanism equipped with a power plant.

If you take a good look at the design of any, then there is nothing complicated there, which means you can make it yourself, having only the necessary materials and tools on the farm. You will also need a power plant. Many craftsmen were able to adapt the engine from the Soviet Ural chainsaw as a mover for a homemade cleaner.

Advantages and disadvantages

A couple of positive points on a homemade snow blower made from a Ural chainsaw:

  • The cost of manufacturing such a unit will cost several times cheaper than purchasing a factory model of a snow blower, even if you have to buy a used chainsaw;
  • The performance of a snow blower with an engine from the Ural chainsaw will not be much inferior to this indicator of the factory model;
  • Almost all other elements of the snow blower are made from improvised materials - pieces of pipes, sheets and pieces of thin iron.

The main drawback that a home-made snow blower based on a chainsaw has, and because of which it is inferior to factory models, and even then not to everyone, is the lack of a mechanism that ensures the self-propelled movement of this snow blower, you have to push it in front of you, which is not very easy.

But in general, a home-made unit is worthy of attention, since it can save a lot of money and make it easier to clear snow.

Frame, power plant

It is better to weld the frame from pipes of small diameter. The pipe sections, which will be located longitudinally relative to the unit itself, will also be skids, with the help of which the snow blower will move through the snow. Therefore, it is better to cut the edges of these segments, which will be in front, at an angle, and weld the holes so that the snow does not stuff into the pipes.

From two pipe sections, which will be located longitudinally, and two sections located transversely, a frame is welded. The crossbars in this case are needed to fix the engine on them, so one should be located on the rear edge of the longitudinal sections, and the second crossbar is about 200 mm from the first.

The distance between the longitudinal sections should not exceed 700 mm. That is, the frame is formed in the form of the letter P, but with two crossbars.

The power plant is used from a Soviet chainsaw because its torque is not very large, but it has good traction. The whole chainsaw is not needed, so you need to remove the motor from the frame. Next, it needs to be slightly modified. In place of the chainsaw chain drive sprocket, you need to install a small drive sprocket from the Voskhod, Minsk motorcycle. You can simply weld it to the chainsaw sprocket, having previously centered it.

Auger, auger housing, drive

We turn to the working bodies of the Ural snow blower, namely the auger. It is made from a piece of pipe of small diameter. You can also use any shafts up to 80-850 mm long. An important condition is the selection of bearings for the shaft. Such a shaft length is needed to ensure its drive, which will be located outside the housing.

Next, from sheet metal with a thickness of 2-3 mm, you need to cut 4 circles with an outer diameter of 300 mm. Holes with a diameter of 220-230 mm are cut in these circles. Further, the existing discs are cut on one side and the disc is stretched at the cut point, forming a semblance of a coil of a spring. This must be done with all 4 blanks.

Then you need to calculate the center of the shaft, taking into account its segment, which will be used for the drive. In the center of the shaft, two plates 130 mm long and 150 mm wide will need to be welded to it. They should be parallel to each other. These plates will be the blades for ejecting snow.

The prepared screw bands are welded on one side to the blades, on the other side spacers are attached to the shaft, to which the other ends of the tapes are welded. You need to arrange the tapes so that their turns move towards the center. That is, on both sides of the blades there should be two tapes installed in parallel and directed towards the center with their turns. Moreover, this entire structure should not exceed 700 mm in length; the rest of the shaft will go under the drive.

Photo of the auger mechanism of a homemade snow blower

Let's move on to the body. It is made from round sidewalls, which in diameter should exceed the screw by about 50-70 mm. Next, a sheet of metal with a thickness of 1-1.5 mm is taken. It bends along the circumference of the sidewalls, and is welded to them, forming a semicircle. In the sidewalls, holes are made in the center into which the finished screw is inserted. From the outer side of the sidewalls, bearings are put on the shaft, pressed against the sidewalls and fixed, while the position of the shaft is centered. To fix the bearings to the sidewalls, you can make clips, or simply weld them to the sidewalls with external clips, but then the design will be non-separable.

Next, you need to make a snow removal. It can be made from a piece of aluminum pipe with a diameter of 150 mm and a length of 100 mm, as well as pieces of sheet metal from which it will be necessary to form a box. The pipe section will be the basis of the snowman. To install it, a hole of the required diameter is made in the auger body, located so that it is slightly behind the auger blades. A piece of pipe is inserted into the hole and fixed in it with a bolted connection, and a prepared box is already attached to the pipe.

A driven rear sprocket from the indicated motorcycles is put on the section of the shaft reserved for the drive and fixed on it by welding.

It remains only to assemble the structure. The housing together with the auger is placed on the longitudinal elements of the frame and welded into it. The power plant is fixed to the crossbars, but in such a way that the driving and driven sprockets are located in the same plane. A motorcycle chain will be used for the drive. Its tension can be realized in two ways: tension due to the movement of the power plant, but for this it is necessary to provide the possibility of longitudinal movement of the motor with the possibility of fixing it at any point. It is also possible to implement a tension sprocket bolted to the auger body.

It remains only to attach the control knob, made of pipes, to the frame, and bring the engine throttle control to the handle.

Before test running the snow blower, you need to check all the connections and make sure that the auger rotates easily and does not cling to the body elements.
Video review of a homemade snow blower from the Ural chainsaw:

Sometimes in winter there is so much snow that it is impossible to remove it with an ordinary shovel. When living outside the city, we are talking about fairly large plots. To facilitate cleaning work, you need to use special equipment. However, acquiring it is very costly. Many home craftsmen recommend making a snow blower from a chainsaw with your own hands.

Such a solution will allow not only to get rid of snowdrifts quickly and without large expenses, but also to give a second life to an old tool instead of throwing it away.

Device advantages

Homemade snow blower from a chainsaw has several advantages. In particular, the following should be noted:

Do-it-yourself snow blowers can also be made from other products, in particular, walk-behind tractors and more. The most popular among craftsmen is the option of making such a device from a chainsaw of the Ural brand.

What do you need to work

Snow blower assembly process will differ depending on which aggregate is used to do this. If we consider the Ural chainsaw as a working material, then it is good because it includes a high-quality transmission that protects the saw from damage. Thanks to the inertial clutch, the insides are reliably protected from external influences. For example, when a foreign body gets inside, the saw is instantly turned off, so it can be cleaned and prevent damage.

This chainsaw is good because a machine based on it does not require the use of complex parts and tucks or the acquisition of complex mechanisms.

To work, you need to prepare the following:

You won’t need to purchase any expensive new materials; most of the listed tools and parts are in the arsenal of almost every home craftsman. If they are not available, then they can be bought at a flea market at a very affordable price or asked from friends.

A homemade snow removal design includes several key components. Among them:

  • engine;
  • wheelbase;
  • cardan shaft;
  • bearings;
  • leading star.

First you need to provide strong structural support. The motor should be placed strictly in the center so that uneven scooping of snow or distortions is not allowed. It is supplemented with a gas tank, which, for convenience, is attached to the steering support by means of a bolted connection. From an old motorcycle, you can take the throttle with a cable, which will allow you to easily control the throttle of the motor.

In order for the snow blower to work, the frame will need to be welded. You don’t need to use complex drawings for this, everything is much simpler than it might seem.

The bucket will require square pipes with parameters of 20 by 20 by 1.7 mm. On their basis, you need to assemble the frame, then cover it with galvanized steel so that the bucket does not rust or rot in the future. Steel must have a thickness of 5 mm to avoid mechanical damage. metal sheets attached to the frame with aluminum rivets. For easier use of the structure, you need to weld a metal plate to the bucket, which will allow it to move more easily in the snow. The plate should be up to 60 cm wide and up to 4 cm long, respectively. It is better to cover it with polyethylene: then snow will not stick to it.

Shaft design

The shaft is one of the key elements in the design of the harvester. It consists on the basis of a pipe to which augers are welded.

For the shaft you will need to take:

  • steel pipe;
  • a driven star welded to it;
  • bearings for fastening inside the screw tube;
  • wing rotors and two rotor blades;
  • augers;
  • blade wings;
  • two support corners.

The cardan shaft is a rotor to which screws are welded parallel to each other, which look in different directions. First you need to take a steel pipe, at the ends of which bearings will be installed. For this purpose, a trunnion is welded to the ends of the pipe, and then closed-type bearings are mounted on it.

Then you need to install in the center of the shaft extra star, which will transmit torque to the shaft from the motor. The elements will be connected by a chain, it can be taken from an old motorcycle. Such a star should have 33 teeth in compliance with step 12.7, it is fastened with special bolts. In order for the circuit and other parts of the system not to be exposed to negative external influences, it is recommended to provide a housing for the structure.

When the star and bearings are installed, blades are welded to the shaft to clear snow. You will need 6 steel strips located on each side of the shaft.

Screws are made in different ways. They can be solid and can be ordered or made by yourself. The easiest way is to cut the steel into "horseshoes", making it easier for the screw to be fixed on the pipe. In terms of strength, the design will practically not differ from the factory one. To improve the performance of the machine, it is necessary to provide teeth for the auger blades. You can cut them with a grinder. The blades are then attached to the wings with M6 bolts. All bolts will need to be unscrewed, respectively, the ends of their connection must be riveted.

The finished rotor should have two duralumin blades based on 2 mm steel. Instead of steel, you can use stainless steel, which will be more durable.

The blades are placed symmetrically, so that they will be reliably protected from mechanical influences. After installation, the structure should look balanced and symmetrical. To connect the gearbox and transmission star in the process of improving the engine, it will be necessary to replace the gearbox drive star with a 17-tooth design in compliance with a step of 12.7. It is placed on the cardan shaft at the end of the second knee. When working with a wheelbase, you need to take into account that it must have an axle with a pair of bearings, rollers or trunnions are placed on them. They are welded to the ends of pipes.

Wheels can be equipped with integrated bearings, in which case it is much easier and faster to replace or repair them. The axle and wheels are attached with M10 bolts.

The final touch in assembling the machine is the installation of a snow guide. A sleeve is welded to the bucket, after assembly the snow will come out through it. If the snowblower engine has 7 horsepower or less, it may fail in large snowdrifts.

The Ural chainsaw and other brands can also be used for home-made production of other useful devices. For example:

  • lawn mowers;
  • sawmills;
  • water pump.

The key requirement for a particular device that is planned to be manufactured is that it must have a small-sized powerful engine. Armed with simple tools from your home workshop, you can make useful gadgets to make household chores easier - in particular, a tool for clearing snow in winter.

Small-sized snow blowers, which allow automating the laborious process of clearing snow, are in great demand. But what if there is simply no money to buy a snowplow?

the only way out is the construction of a homemade snow blower from what can be found in almost every garage of a thrifty owner. For instance, chainsaw, which is available to many people, especially in rural areas.

Principle of operation

The design of a factory snow blower is quite simple. The main driving force is the motor, the quality of snow removal, the throwing range, etc. will depend on the power of which.

In addition to the engine, snow blower includes:

  • A housing made of metal or plastic that protects the working units from the outside environment.
  • Screw mechanism, consisting of a shaft and screw parts.
  • Outlet pipe through which snow is ejected to the outside.
  • If the system is two-stage, then in addition to the auger, an impeller (rotor mechanism) is also used, which ejects snow into the outlet pipe.
  • Elementary control systems, handles, clutch, etc.
  • Depending on the configuration, there may be a wheelbase, tracks or skis.

The principle of operation of a homemade snow blower will be no different from the store version. It also includes auger will be included, which is directed by screws to the center of the shaft. He directs the snow cover to the blade, which transfers the mass further to the outlet pipe.

If a rotor is provided in the design, then the incoming snow from the blade first falls on it. It performs additional processing of the snow mass, after which it is sent to the pipe.

Then the snow is thrown out to a certain distance (up to 12 meters).

Made homemade chainsaw snow blower has its advantages:

  • By making a snow blower with your own hands, you will save a lot of money that you could spend on buying a new snow blower. At the same time, even if you have to buy the chainsaw itself (see), you will still remain in the black.
  • A snowplow made by hand from or other models will have similar performance as purchased counterparts.
  • The remaining parts of the body, the screw mechanism and other structural components are made from handy tools, such as metal pipes, iron sheets, etc. Again, this is about saving money.

For more information, see the video below:

The only drawback will be the fact that a homemade snowplow from a chainsaw it will not be possible to install the mechanism responsible for the self-propelled structure. But if you provide for a kind of sled or skis at the bottom of the unit, then this task will not be so difficult.

The chainsaw snow blower has other features:

  • As an outlet pipe, you can use almost any plastic pipe, the diameter of which will be at least 16 cm.
  • The control knob can be made independently, from any metal tube.
  • The width of the bucket will depend on the power of the chainsaw engine. If it is powerful enough, then the width of the bucket can be increased.

Due to the fact that a homemade snow blower made from a chainsaw is not self-propelled, it is better provide a kind of sled for better movement of the unit on the snow cover. You can use ordinary wooden bars, corresponding to the length of the frame.

They can be attached to a plastic base, which will improve the running performance of the snow blower.

Can be distinguished a few tips assisting in the operation of the unit:

  • To prevent foreign objects from entering a running engine, special safety bolts can be installed to eliminate this threat.
  • After the first start of the unit, it is necessary to check all connections of the snow blower. If required, tighten all nuts until snug.
  • Make preference towards closed type bearings so that the snow mass does not get inside the housing.
  • Do not try to remove heavily packed snow. Make a preliminary preparation of the coating with a hand tool.

Conclusion

Building a homemade snow blower from an existing chainsaw is a fairly optimal way out of a situation where there is not enough money to buy a snow blower in a store.

Taking into account the fact that the cost of even the cheapest unit can be at least 15 thousand rubles, this issue is quite acute. (read about choosing a petrol snow blower)

Using a chainsaw engine is also good because its power is enough for cleaning quite large volumes of snow. At the same time, the power of a homemade snow blower is almost identical to that available from store models (see snow blower).

Prices for ready-made models of snowplows force many to take up a shovel and clear the paths by hand. To mechanize the process with minimal financial costs, you can design a snow blower with your own hands. The first step is to evaluate your own strength, available material and equipment. Based on the conditions, select the optimal implementation project, develop a drawing, study the manufacturing technology and draw up a snowplow assembly plan.

Manufacturing technology of auger snow blower

The manual auger-type snow blower is characterized by its simple design and the possibility of self-manufacturing. To put it into operation, the mechanism is equipped with an engine from a walk-behind tractor, a chainsaw, a hammer drill or a drill. The type of engine determines the power supply of the unit: electric or fuel.

Homemade auger-type snow blower

The design and principle of operation of technology

Screw snow removal units perform a single-stage intake and ejection of snow. In shape, the working mechanism of the snow blower resembles the shaft of a mechanical meat grinder. The auger is located in front of the machine, on the sides and top of the rotating element is closed by a bucket body.

The monolithic device rotates around its axis, grinds the snow and transfers it inside the equipment, and then throws it through the bucket into the distance. To improve the removal of packed snow and ice, the snowplow is additionally equipped with a knife or augers with a serrated edge are used.

In addition to a rotating shaft, a homemade snow blower is equipped with:

  • engine;
  • outlet chute;
  • box;
  • wheels or tracks;
  • handle for movement.

The design of the auger snow blower

Preparation of tools and materials

Before you make a snow blower with your own hands, you need to draw up its drawing, calculate the consumption of materials and prepare the tools.

For the manufacture of small snowplows with a working width of 50 cm, you can use the engine from an existing walk-behind tractor. It can be replaced with any engine with a power of about 1 kW. To create the rest of the components you will need:

  1. The body of the auger is made of roofing sheet metal, the sides are made of thick plywood 1 cm thick.
  2. The design of the auger, as can be seen from the do-it-yourself snow blower drawing, includes the following elements:
    • central axis - metal pipe with a diameter of ¾ inch;
    • shoulder blade - metal plate 12 * 27 cm;
    • two-way screw rotation system - conveyor belt or sheet metal;
    • sealed bearings 205;
    • auger drive - belt or chain.
  3. Frame - metal corners 5 * 5 cm, cross bars - corners 2.5 * 2.5 cm.
  4. Platform for engine installation - metal corners 5 * 5 cm.
  5. Snow chute - sewer PVC pipe with a diameter of 16 cm.
  6. Ski track - wooden bars with plastic lining.
  7. The control knob is a half-inch metal pipe.
  8. The fastening of the transverse corners and the handle is carried out with M8 bolts.

Of the tools you will need:

  • welding machine;
  • drill and grinder for metal;
  • hammer and square;
  • jigsaw or saw;
  • metal clamps.

Schematic representation of the snow blower frame

Creating a snowplow frame and auger

The frame itself resembles an ordinary sledge - all structural elements are placed on two skids. To save time, you can use an old sled with a metal frame.

Making a homemade frame with dimensions of 70 * 48 cm:

  1. According to the drawing, prepare parts of the desired length from the corners.
  2. Connect them together and weld.
  3. In the side racks, make holes for attaching the bucket, handles and wheels.

The technology for creating a snow blower auger with your own hands is more complicated. The blades of the working element can be made from old tires, conveyor belts or sheet metal. The latter option is more reliable and provides better snow removal.

Important! Double-sided blades should be angled towards the center, allowing rotational energy to be converted into linear energy. The blades rotate and push the snow masses in a straight line towards the bucket.

Making a blade from a tire

The general algorithm for creating a screw does not depend on the material used:

  1. Cut out 4 circles from metal, the diameter of which is less than the semicircle of the bucket. According to the example in question, the diameter of the rings is 28 cm.
  2. Cut holes in the center of the circles corresponding to the diameter of the axle, that is, ¾ inch.
  3. Cut each circle on one side and stretch to form a spiral.
  4. Weld a metal plate in the center of the auger shaft. This shovel will supply snow to the bucket.
  5. Weld the prepared spirals to the shaft.
  6. On one side of the shaft, fix an asterisk or a pulley - the choice depends on the type of drive (chain or belt, respectively).
  7. Put on the drive and install the bearings.

The next stage is the manufacture of the bucket:

  1. Bend a sheet metal sheet 50 cm wide into a semicircle, arc diameter - 30 cm.
  2. Cut out the sides from plywood and prepare holes for the shaft in them.
  3. Connect the parts of the bucket, move and attach the installed bearings to the end walls.

Attaching the screw shaft to the bucket

Assembly of the structure and start-up of the unit

To put a self-made snow blower into operation, it is necessary to assemble the structure together:

  1. Fix the finished bucket with the auger on the "sledge".
  2. Install the engine by putting on the pulley or sprocket from it the drive, which is derived from the auger.
  3. Attach a handle to the frame and bring the engine controls to its panel.

Ready unit before start

Before starting, it is necessary to check the strength of the welds, the reliability of the fasteners and the stroke of the blades - they must scroll freely.

Making a snow plow attachment for a walk-behind tractor

In the winter season, the walk-behind tractor can be converted into snowplows. For this, it is not necessary to buy expensive nozzles. Having experience with metal, it will be possible to independently convert a walk-behind tractor into an efficient snow blower.

The design of the auger-rotor snow blower

Rotary mounted "snow thrower" for walk-behind tractor

The rotary nozzle is a two-stage model, the most difficult to manufacture independently. A snow blower for a walk-behind tractor of this type consists of two working elements: an auger and a screw. The rotating blades of the auger transfer the snow masses to the high-speed impeller, where they are additionally crushed and thrown through the bucket. This principle of operation increases the productivity of equipment and the range of snow ejection (up to 12 m).

Diagram of the rotor shaft

The entire creation process is conditionally divided into two stages:

  1. Production of a ladle with a working mechanism.
  2. Connecting a walk-behind tractor and a snow blower.

Snow blower drawing: side view

The sequence of manufacturing a rotary canopy:

  1. According to the drawings of a snow blower for a walk-behind tractor, prepare the details of the box, drum for the rotor and pipes from sheet metal.
  2. From metal with a thickness of 1.5-2 mm, make a casing for placing the screw. The bucket is assembled from a curved central part and end cheeks. Cut holes for the auger shaft from the sides. The impeller casing will also serve as a support for the drum with the rotor.
  3. Build a screw shaft.
    • From steel 2 mm thick, cut 8 half-disks.
    • Weld the spiral augers to the metal pipe.
    • Place the shaft with augers on ball bearings 203.
  4. Creating and fixing the rotor:
    • As a drum, you can use a 20 l aluminum boiler or a metal cylinder made of sheet metal.
    • Connect the prepared drum to the body of the snowplow.
    • Assemble the rotor by welding from profiled metal strips, disk, shaft and bearings, as shown in the diagram.

Homemade snow blower rotor

The design of a do-it-yourself rotary snow blower is attached to the walk-behind tractor using a profile and a corner with a bolted connection. The torque is recreated by means of a V-belt connection. For this purpose, the A-100 belt is suitable.

Connecting a walk-behind tractor and a snowplow

Creation of a bulldozer blade

It is much easier to manufacture a bulldozer blade or a snow shovel for a walk-behind tractor. The self-made unit works in three positions: forward, left and right at a slope of 30 °.

To create a blade with a working width of 850 cm, you will need:

  • steel barrel 200 l;
  • square pipe with a section of 4 * 4 cm - 85 cm;
  • iron sheet 3 mm thick, 85 * 10 cm in size;
  • bolts M8, M10 and M12, nuts and washers;
  • tools for working with metal (welding machine, grinder, pliers, etc.).

"Open" barrels into three segments

Work order:

  1. Cut off the bottom and lid from the barrel.
  2. Cut the formed cylinder into three equal segments.
  3. Fold two segments together and weld around the perimeter - a rigid web 3 mm thick is formed.
  4. To strengthen the lower part of the blade, attach a knife - a strip of steel 5 mm thick. The fixing step of the cutter is 10 cm. Put rubber pads on the homemade knife.
  5. Along the dump in the center, weld a pipe 40 * 40 mm.
  6. Fix a semicircle of thick-walled metal sheet on the pipe by welding. In the installed arc, make three holes to allow you to change the direction of the shovel.
  7. From a pipe with a cross section of 40 * 40 mm, make a L-shaped holder. One end is bolted to the frame with holes on the blade, and the other to the walk-behind tractor.

How to make a chainsaw snow blower

Snow blower from a chainsaw with a capacity of up to 7 liters. from. easy to manufacture and manage. Below is an example of the manufacture of a snowplow based on the Ural 2T saw. Its feature is the presence of an inertial clutch, which acts as a fuse when a foreign object enters the rotor.

Complete set of a petrol snow blower

Complete set and drawings of home-made equipment

The snow blower comes standard with:

  • motor - mounted on a longitudinal axis, in order to avoid distortions during operation;
  • gas tank from "Ural" - mounted on the steering support;
  • frame - made of pipes with a section of 20 * 20 mm;
  • ladle - a body made of a metal pipe 10 * 10 mm, sheathing - galvanized sheet with a thickness of 1.5 mm;
  • screw-rotor shaft, consisting of a pipe, rotary (steel 2 mm thick) and screw blades (duralumin sheet 4 mm thick);
  • bearing assembly.

The drawings of a snow blower from a chainsaw clearly demonstrate the device and assembly scheme with your own hands.

  4. Attach a polyethylene strip to the installed plate.

Scheme of assembly of the rotary auger shaft

Stage 2. Manufacturing of the rotary auger shaft:

  1. Familiarize yourself with the design of the shaft and prepare its components:
    • pipe cut 568 mm long;
    • closed bearings 40*16*16 mm;
    • 12 steel blades;
    • two rotor blades 115 mm wide.
  2. Weld steel tips to the ends of the pipe, on which the bearings will be fixed.
  3. Attach two corners made of metal 4 mm thick with a size of 25 * 25 mm to the frame with bolts.
  4. On the shaft, install an asterisk with 33 teeth, located in 12.7 increments.
  5. Screw blades are welded in pairs to the shaft at a distance of 96 mm, observing the symmetry of their arrangement.
  6. Fasten the half-blades with bolts to the "wings" of the auger.
  7. Install rotor blades.

Stage 3. Mounting the engine:

  1. In the engine, replace the gearbox drive sprocket with a driveline.
  2. Install the removed sprocket on the cardan shaft at the end of the second elbow.
  3. Attach the body to the frame with bolts using corners.

Stage 4. Installing the wheels:

  1. From a pipe with a diameter of 26 mm and a length of 55 cm, make an axis.
  2. Weld trunnions with a diameter of 20 mm along the edges of the axis.
  3. Fix the wheels with built-in bearings - wheels from a conventional trolley will do.

Chainsaw-based snow blower

Additionally, the device can be equipped with a folding sleeve that will regulate the direction of the snow.

Modification of the trimmer for a snow plow

Do-it-yourself electric snow blower can be made from a grass trimmer. The unit with the engine located on top is optimally suited. An electric motor with a power of 1.6 kW is enough for the “snow thrower” to throw snow masses by 3-4 meters.

Given the design feature of the electric engine, the snow removal mechanism can be made rotary - without installing an auger shaft. An interesting variant of the working bucket chamber is the use of a ventilation “snail”. Snow will be thrown through the existing bell. The installation size allows you to manage it manually.

The rotor is made of four metal blades, the length of which must correspond to the diameter of the "snail" base. The trimmer gearbox is installed in an improvised bucket, and a rotary mechanism is attached to the place of the knife from the scythe.

Important! When creating a snow blower from a trimmer, special attention should be paid to the power wire. The cable must be of sufficient length and high quality - it will face aggressive operating conditions.

Electric snow blower

Design features of an electric snow blower:

  • optimal motor power - 2.2 kW;
  • the power unit must be protected from snow and water - otherwise there is a high probability of a short circuit;
  • the engine should be placed above the snow clearing level;
  • the wire must withstand cold up to -60°C.

Making a snow blower with your own hands is not an easy task. If there is not enough technical knowledge and design experience, then it is better not to take on such work. However, if you have welding skills and create metal products, you can make a practical and economical unit.

Severe weather conditions in Russia are forcing owners of summer cottages or private sectors to purchase snowplows. Heavy snowstorms, snowdrifts one meter or more high, all this brings great inconvenience to transport and pedestrians. To eliminate such problems, many home craftsmen make a snow blower with their own hands from improvised means. Thus, they have a reliable and economical unit in their assortment of equipment.

Varieties of technology

There are many different snow blowers on the market. All variations are divided into several types according to the method of work. Since rotary variations are the most popular, consider three classes in this category:

  1. Rotor auger - used to clean a small area from fresh and packed snow. Such a technique is capable of throwing the mass to the sides or collecting it in a snow collector. A do-it-yourself screw cleaner has a simple scheme that takes into account the presence of screws.

The design of the screw-fan unit

  1. The rotary plow unit is most suitable for cleaning fresh snow. The homemade device is placed on a mini tractor, mini loader or chassis and is equipped with a plow with 1-2 rotors.
  2. The milling rotary harvester has the same capabilities as the first option. This is a powerful snow blower with parameters that allow you to overcome three-meter snowdrifts and throw the snow mass at a distance of up to 20 m.

Before you make a snowplow, you need to know that the types in question are equipped with cutter feeders and a thrower rotor. This is an important aspect to consider when designing a build drawing.

How is a snow blower

The scheme of each homemade snow blower with their own hands includes a number of components and mechanisms. The components of self-propelled devices include:

  1. Power unit. A snow blower is made from a friendship chainsaw, a powerful trimmer, a gas mower or other device where there is a gasoline or electric type engine with a high torque rate.
  2. Chassis. Before you make a snowplow yourself, you need to decide on the chassis, will it consist of wheels or tracks.
  3. Casing. This part is located in the nose area of the equipment. For its manufacture, as a rule, durable plastic or metal is used. In the inner part, a functioning body of a snow plow is placed, for example, a special plow or auger.
  4. Snow knot. This part is directly responsible for collecting snow; different working elements can be used in models - a plow, an auger, a cutter.

  1. Outlet chute. There is a plastic or metal type. During the operation of the device, the snow volume will circulate through it directly to the ejection area.
  2. Handles. With the help of handles, the operator will be able to control the equipment or change modes.
  3. Rotor. It is used only in do-it-yourself rotary snow blowers, in general it looks like a roller with many blades.

How to make a snow blower from a chainsaw? Easy if you follow the steps and follow all the recommendations. For do-it-yourself home-made snowplows for the home, not the entire Ural chainsaw is needed, but only its engine.

What you need for a do-it-yourself chainsaw snow blower:

  • roofing iron;
  • plywood sheet 1 cm;
  • metal nozzles ½ inch, ¾;
  • metal corners;
  • plastic pipe 16 cm;
  • conveyor belt 1 cm thick;
  • sealed self-aligning bearings 205.

The steps for creating a homemade chainsaw snow blower are as follows:

  1. First of all, you need to figure out how to make an auger body for a snow blower. For this, roofing iron is used. The sides are made of plywood. Weld the frame from strong metal corners according to the prepared drawings. Prepare the handle from the ½ inch pipe, and the auger shaft from the ¾ inch.

Chainsaw machine drawing

  1. In the middle of the blade for discarding the snow mass, you need to make a through hole so that it can be attached to the pipe. For a 2-way auger, it is necessary to prepare 4 rings from a conveyor belt with a size of 28 cm.
  2. Fix the metal corner on the branch pipe in a T-shaped position with respect to the plate. This is necessary to install the quick-detachable powertrain platform. In order for the shaft to be freely immersed in the bearings, it is required to equip it with two cuts along the edges. Also, on one side of the shaft, you need to create a groove for installing the key under the star.
  3. As a walker, it is recommended to use skis carved from wood blocks. Such a chassis will perform much better in operation than a wheelbase. In order for the skis for the harvester to glide well on the snow with your own hands, equip them with plastic pads from the electrical wiring box.
  4. For the manufacture of a rotary chute, use plastic pipes. A branch pipe with a smaller diameter is fixed on an element with a larger one, while a narrower tube is attached to the auger frame. To the finished swivel gutter, fix the cut off part from the sewer pipe. She, when working with a homemade cleaner, will set the direction where the snow mass should be thrown.

In order for the volume of snow to circulate freely through the system to the exit, the size of the auger blade must be smaller than the diameter of the chute itself. Otherwise, the equipment will regularly clog.

  1. The length of the chute affects the direction of the snow throw and its flight range. This should be taken into account when determining the size.

The final step in creating a do-it-yourself snowplow from a chainsaw is to treat the structure with an anti-corrosion agent and coat it with a paint and varnish substance.

Scheme and assembly of the screw unit

The auger is an indispensable element of any snowplow. Structurally, it is a drum with twisted legs rotating in a spiral. At the base of the spiral there are metal blades that, when rotated, rake snow from the sides to the center, after which they push the mass through the nozzle.

In order to make an auger with your own hands, you will need a shaft - it is made of a metal pipe with a diameter. The length is determined by the planned capture area. On average, this is from half a meter to 80 cm. Less is ineffective, more is that the equipment will be hard to move.

Two rectangular steel plates are welded to the center of the pipe - these are the future blades of the structure. Legs can be made from steel, used tire sidewalls or conveyor belt. Next, 4 discs with a diameter of 28 cm are cut out of the metal sheet and a circle is cut out in the center along the diameter of the shaft. The rings are sawn from one side and gently stretched to the sides - these are spiral turns, which, as indicated in the diagram, are welded to the shaft towards the blades.

It is important to maintain the same distance between the turns of the spiral, otherwise the snow blower will wag around.

Pins are welded along the edges of the shaft, on which bearings of closed type No. 305 are put on. This is necessary so that during cleaning the drum does not jam with a stone.

For the bucket, you will need a 2 mm sheet of the same length as the auger + 2-3 cm along the edges. Bend it in a spiral so that the radius is 2 cm larger than the diameter of the knives. The side walls are also better made of metal, but thick plywood is also suitable. Hubs are inserted in the center and the screw is made. First, a belt drive pulley is put on the trunnion. On the top of the bucket, you need to make a kind of sleeve with a visor in order to direct the ejected snow in the right direction.

Now it is the turn of connecting the electric motor, for which they are preparing a frame with dimensions of 48x70 cm and a width of 50 cm with jumpers for installing the engine.

Skids are screwed along the lower edge of the frame (2 corners are pre-cut and the edges are bent). Now it remains to install the engine, make a pulley and connect the cable.

Before the first start, scroll the auger by hand, check that it moves freely. If there are no obstacles, you can start cleaning.
