Do-it-yourself snow scraper. Homemade device for removing snow from the road

This simple tool in the winter becomes an indispensable tool for a person. After a snowfall, without a good shovel, it is not easy to get to the porch of the house, drive into the garage or get into the barn.

Some might say that snowplow equipment hasn't changed since his grandfather went to school. In fact, the tools for fighting snowdrifts have been continuously improved, making our work easier.

Today we will look at the various options for snow shovels and get acquainted with their features. We will give recommendations on the choice, indicate approximate prices and provide useful tips for DIYers.

Types of shovels for snow removal

The classic design of a snow shovel is well known to everyone. This is a long handle-handle, on which a wide bucket is fixed.

Classic wooden shovel

Until recently, two materials were used for the manufacture of ladles and cuttings: wood and metal (steel and aluminum).

Today they are supplemented by composite plastic, resistant to frost and mechanical stress.

Anyone who worked with a plastic shovel probably appreciated its main advantage - light weight. It does not get wet from snow, like wood and does not rust like steel. There are doubts about the durability of plastic, but it is usually enough for 4-5 cleaning seasons.

A compact snow shovel is called an automobile. It is used by drivers to clear the parking lot and enter the garage. For ease of transportation in the trunk, such tools are made folding, collapsible or placed on telescopic handles.

Folding car shovel

A shovel with a telescopic handle is convenient to transport and can be easily adjusted to a person's height.

The second popular type of snow removal tool is a scraper or drag (engine). It differs from its relative in a wide arched handle and an impressive width of the bucket.

The element of this design is light and loose snow. It is impossible to work with a snow scraper on a caked and frozen crust. Here you have to use an ordinary shovel according to the principle - "slowly but surely."

In search of a compromise, the designers developed a hybrid of a snow shovel and a scraper. It is equally well suited for both throwing snow and moving it.

Combined shovel-scraper

Turning to mechanized models, consider a snow blower for cleaning snow with an auger. Its advantage over the "old-fashioned" tool is ease of use. No load on the lower back. You push the bucket in front of you, and the auger rotates and throws the snow to the side.

Unfortunately, this mechanism can be confidently operated only with a thin layer of loose snow (up to 15 cm). A thicker layer stops the auger.

In the category of super-shovels for snow removal, you can add a device called a manual bulldozer. This is a four-wheel cart with a blade. The large working width and the ability to work at full height make the mobile shovel an indispensable assistant when cleaning large areas.

The power of a manual bulldozer is 1 human power!

The angle of rotation of the blade is adjustable here, allowing you to work with both light and loose, and with fairly heavy snow.

A simplified version of a snow shovel on wheels is a two-wheeled model. It is less productive, but very convenient to use. The wheel axle allows you to raise the blade during operation, avoiding impacts on the unevenness of the road surface.

Among the unusual design solutions, one-wheeled shovel can be noted. It is not yet found in our stores. They came up with it in the West and dubbed it the "snow wolf." Outwardly, the awkward design, according to the owners, is very maneuverable and easy to use.

One wheel shovel with swing handle

The essence of the idea is to use a large wheel, on the axis of which the handle is hinged. On one side it ends with bicycle "horns", and on the other side it is connected to a plastic bucket. Raking snow, its owner moves around the site. Approaching the storage area, he abruptly lowers the handles. The bucket rises and throws the collected snow forward. Constantly bending down, tiring the muscles of the back, in this case is not necessary.

The next level of design “pumping” is an electric snow shovel.

The principle of its operation is simple: the electric motor rotates the rubber auger, which throws the snow to the side. This mechanism is good when you need to remove the snow cover of small thickness. It is not suitable for dealing with snowdrifts and ice.

Despite the durability and strength of the metal, plastic shovels are becoming the leaders in demand today. As we have said, they are lighter than steel and wood. This fact is of paramount importance when cleaning a large area.

When choosing a plastic shovel, you should pay attention to the depth of the bucket and the presence of a protective lining on its working edge. A capacious bucket speeds up the cleaning process, and a protective edging protects the plastic from wear.

The quality of the plastic is checked very simply: the tool is obliquely rested on the floor and the handle is pressed hard on it. If the bucket is elastically deformed without cracking, then the product will not break from frequent contact with packed snow.

The D-shaped handle enhances ease of use. It increases the power of the throw and prevents the hand from slipping off the handle. The presence of longitudinal ribs on the bucket is another plus in favor of the purchase. They increase rigidity and improve tool glide.

Regarding the material, the following should be said. A wooden shovel with a plywood bucket is inferior to a plastic one. Wet snow quickly sticks to it, increasing the weight of the tool. Contact with moisture causes the plywood to swell and warp.

Aluminum shovels occupy a middle position between wooden and plastic ones. They are light, strong and durable, but very expensive.

Steel buckets are the most reliable, but also the heaviest. With such equipment, you can work on dense snow and knock down thin ice.

Having decided on the material, you should pay attention to the length of the handle (handle). It should not be too short so that you do not have to work, bending over low.

You need to buy a snow scraper as light as possible in order to get less tired when cleaning a large area. It must be equipped with wheels or "skis" - two protruding bars on the bottom of the bucket. They reduce friction on the snow, making it easier to move the tool.

Estimated prices

The simplest plywood shovel can be purchased at a price of 150 rubles.

The cost of a snowplow with a steel bucket and a wooden handle starts at 300 rubles per piece.

Prices for simple aluminum shovels range from 600 to 700 rubles.

Sellers offer a Fiskars plastic shovel with an ergonomic handle, a plastic, wooden or aluminum handle at a price of 900 rubles. More advanced models with a wide bucket (scrapers) reach a price of 2 thousand rubles.

Bestseller FISKARS 142610, price from 900 rubles for 2016-2017

The cost of a simple snow plow with a plastic bucket ranges from 750 to 2000 rubles.

A mechanized snow blower Forte (Forte), equipped with a steel auger, is sold in a retail network at a price of 900-1000 rubles. For an electrified rotary tool, you will have to pay at least 6,000 rubles.

A two-wheeled scraper with a steel bucket can be purchased at a price of 4,000 rubles. Four-wheel models of manual scrapers are sold at a price of 6,500 rubles.

Do-it-yourself snow shovel

There is nothing complicated in the design of a snow shovel. Therefore, you can make it yourself at home.

Consider the two most popular options for do-it-yourselfers:

  • plywood shovel;
  • scraper (engine) on wheels.

Having prepared all the materials necessary for work, you can make a snow shovel with your own hands from plywood within 1 hour.

The set of parts for assembly includes:

  • A wooden lath with a section of 30x40 mm (length 1.5 meters) for the manufacture of a handle.
  • Plywood sheet 5 mm thick and 40x40 cm in size.
  • A piece of pine board 3 cm thick and 40 cm long.
  • A strip of galvanized steel 5-6 cm wide.
  • Wood screws 3 cm long for attaching the handle to plywood.
  • Nails 15-20 mm long.

Of the tools you will need an electric plane, a hacksaw, metal shears, pliers, a chisel, a hammer and a screwdriver.

The first operation is the manufacture of the back wall of the bucket from cutting boards. To do this, draw an arc on the workpiece with a pencil. Its height in the center is 10 cm, and at the edges 5 cm.

Having cut out the outlined contour with a planer, they take a hacksaw and make two cuts in the center of the board according to the size of the future cutting. A chisel cuts out a rectangular hole for passing the handle.

The edge of the handle is marked with a pencil and cut with a hacksaw so that it fits snugly against the plywood sheet.

A sheet of plywood is placed on the wall of the bucket and fixed with nails.

The steel strip is cut to the size of the bucket, its edge is bent and screwed to the bottom with screws. Pieces of steel strip are used to reinforce the place where the handle is attached to the plywood sheet and the area where it passes through the back wall of the bucket.

To strengthen the working edge, the strip is bent in half, put on plywood and the edges of the metal are bent. To prevent the strip from jumping off the bucket during operation, it is fixed along the edges with short screws or rivets.

And now let's consider the manufacture of the second design option - a home-made snow shovel on two wheels.

On the Internet you can find a solution, the basis of which is a frame with handles from an old stroller. We think that for a normal scraper, it is too “flimsy”. Therefore, we suggest using a profile pipe 20x40 mm for the manufacture of the frame. It will take a little for our homemade product, only 1.5 meters.

There will be no square frame in our version. It will be replaced by a central tubular rack. A handle is welded to its upper part - a piece of a water pipe with a diameter of 20 mm.

Two 8" trolley wheels must be purchased prior to assembly. The dump is made of sheet steel with a thickness of 0.8-1.0 mm. Having drilled holes in two steel flange plates for passing the shaft, they are welded to a profile pipe that acts as a handle.

After that, a short piece of pipe 20x40 mm is welded to the inclined rack for attaching a rotary plate with a blade. Three holes are drilled in the plate and in the pipe on which it will lie: one for the mounting bolt and two for installing the locking rod that fixes the blade.

As an axle for the wheels, you can use any steel tube or fittings of a suitable diameter. Having passed the axle into the holes of the flanges, it is necessary to weld retaining rings to it, which protect the wheels from displacement.

Even though the world is experiencing global warming, winters remain very harsh and snowy in most of our country.

It is the latter factor that constantly complicates not only the movement of road transport, but even ordinary pedestrians. In many ways, this issue is more relevant for citizens who have country houses or summer cottages, because there they have to clear the snow themselves, and not rely on public utilities.

Of course, some can afford to buy small-sized special snowblowers, but most can not afford it. That is why the snow scraper has been and continues to be a very necessary tool.

Criterias of choice

Modern options for snow scrapers can be very diverse. For example, there are manual options, and there are mechanical ones. Moreover, the former are much cheaper.

However, all dump models share certain properties:

  • ease;
  • strength;
  • have a good quality handle.

The latter should not slip in the hand and have poor thermal conductivity, which is justified by the need to keep the hands of the person using it warm.

From this it follows that the choice of the required version of the scraper for clearing snow should be based on the specified properties.

Expert advice: it is best if the device is made by hand from aluminum.

This is necessary so that the device is light, but at the same time durable. Due to this, the one who will use the scraper will get tired less, and the chance that the device will break is minimal.

Note: in terms of characteristics, purchased scraper devices are not much superior to those models that can be made independently. Therefore, to clean your yard or sidewalk, it is recommended to make a scraper with your own hands.

in the shape of a shovel

The easiest way is to make an option that looks like a big shovel.

For manufacturing, you will need an aluminum sheet, whose size will be approximately 30 by 50 cm.

At the same time, it should have a bent side at the top so that a side about 5 cm high is obtained.

In addition, for greater functionality, the side boards can be bent in the same way, and the handle can be made from a conventional shovel handle.

wooden scraper

To create scrapers with sides made of pine boards, it is also necessary to prepare a rail from the same material.

Everyone makes the sizes of the latter more convenient for themselves. You also need to take a sheet of galvanized iron so that its dimensions are 73 by 70 cm.

This version of the scraper is made very simply. To a sheet of iron, you need to attach with screws (you can even use self-tapping screws) the sides made of boards. After that, the rail itself is attached, which will act as a handle.

Experts recommend: instead of a rail, you can use a regular shovel handle. At the same time, it is desirable that the length and width of the device allow it to be freely moved through doorways and gates in a country house.

Scraper on wheels

Naturally, it is better to use models on wheels. Using a scraper makes clearing snow much easier.

To create such a variant of the device, it is necessary to prepare an aluminum pipe, whose diameter is 27 cm.

After that, you need to cut out a sector from it, the size of which will be several centimeters smaller than the semicircle.

The resulting part is used as the blade itself.

The frame can be used from an old baby stroller. You will also need iron water pipes (you can use old ones).

  • first, cuts are made on the pipe, necessary to accommodate the axle of the wheels, after that, on the opposite side, it must be welded directly to the blade;
  • using metal corners, it is necessary to make fasteners for racks;

Note: when using the device on a concrete or asphalt surface, it is recommended to attach a protective tape to the bottom of the blade. In this case, such a device will not clear the surface of ice.

  • to protect the metal from possible corrosion, it must be painted.

The result is a very convenient and functional device that, when used, will not scratch the road surface.

In more advanced models, you can install an engine on the wheels so that the snow pusher is even more convenient to use.

Watch the video in which the master clearly shows how to make a simple and reliable snow scraper yourself:

Buying a ready-made snow blower is easy.

But if there are details, even if not quite suitable, they can be assembled and you can get a completely working do-it-yourself unit.

The design of a homemade snow blower

As a basis, I used a flanged asynchronous three-phase electric motor with a power of 2.2 kW. giving 3000 rpm (1). A pulley from a VAZ car (2) was pressed onto its shaft, 4 blades measuring 12 × 15 cm each, steel, 3 mm thick, were welded to the pulley.

Around the resulting "fan" I assembled a body with snow-guiding blades (also made of 3 mm steel) and a pipe for ejecting snow.

The housing was fixed on the motor flange with four M10 bolts.

The pipe (3) - sewer plastic, 30 cm long - was fixed in a wooden part by cutting a hole of the required size with an electric jigsaw. Reliable fastening was provided by self-tapping screws screwed in from three sides. I fixed the wooden part with the pipe with the same screws on the fan housing. On this pipe (to direct the flow of snow) put on a half-branch (4) of the same diameter by 120 °.

I welded guide skids from a 35 mm steel angle to the fan housing and a steering wheel (5) - a water pipe with a diameter of 20 mm, on which I fixed a packet switch (6).

During operation, it turned out that the motor was under too much load. The problem was solved by removing two of the four fan blades. This did not affect the performance of the snow blower.

Homemade snow removal tools

Snowy winter brings a lot of worries for the owners of suburban areas. One of them is snow removal. We will tell you what tools to quickly and with less effort clear the paths in the garden, the parking lot, the entrances to the house after a snowfall.

If you just need to clean the path to the house or the parking lot for the car, then the easiest way to do this is with the help of manual equipment. These can be shovels or scrapers (they are also called drag scrapers).

Despite the apparent fragility, plastic shovels are reliable helpers when cleaning snow.

There are many types of shovels designed for snow removal. They differ in size and are aluminum, plastic, wood. The lightest and most popular among summer residents are shovels with a plastic scoop. Modern manufacturers offer products made of high-quality frost-resistant plastic.

Therefore, despite the apparent fragility, they will serve you for a long time. The larger the area of the shovel bucket and the higher the sides, the more snow is placed in it - accordingly, the faster the work will go. But it must be borne in mind that the mass of an average bucket with a load, depending on the moisture content of the snow, can reach up to 15 kg! So choose a shovel according to your abilities.

The front edge of the bucket for many shovels is reinforced with a metal lining that protects it from breakage.

When choosing a shovel, it will be useful to take a closer look not only at the volume of the bucket, but also at the handle. The handle should be light and strong, and its length should allow you to work without bending too much. Metal shovels are not much different from plastic ones. Unless they are more durable, but they will also cost about twice as much. But we suggest making a wooden shovel yourself.

Homemade shovel

To make a wooden snow shovel, you will need the following materials:

  • wooden handle 40 mm and 2 m long;
  • a sheet of plywood measuring 40 x 40 cm;
  • board with a section of 100 * 25 mm and a length of 40 cm;
  • strips of galvanized iron sheet 5-7 cm wide.

To begin with, the back wall of the bucket is made of a board, one edge of which is sawn in an arc. A hole is drilled in the center of the workpiece according to the diameter of the handle. It is better to make a hole at a slight angle to ensure a comfortable fit for the handle. Next, a sheet of plywood is attached to the workpiece as a ladle and the handle is tried on: it will need to be cut at an angle so that it fits snugly against the plywood. After that, it is fixed exactly in the center. When all the parts are assembled together, the joints and the working edge of the shovel are upholstered with strips of sheet iron to increase strength and durability.

Scraper-drag from ... OSB!

From the half of the 0SB sheet left after the construction of the house, you can make a simple scraper for clearing snow on paved areas. To make the tool comfortable and maneuverable, it can be narrowed at the top - about 30 cm from each edge: the scraper will become lighter without loss of performance. And for safety, we recommend cutting off the sharp corners that have turned out below, as well as rounding and sanding the remaining corners and edges. Don't forget to cut holes for the hands to make it easier to move the scraper.

Snowplows

On a large area, the most effective will be the use of snowplows. They are designed in such a way that they not only rake the snow, but also throw it a considerable distance. The dimensions, snow throwing range, performance and cost of such machines can vary over a wide range.

According to the type of engine, snow blowers can be divided into electric and gasoline. Electric ones have a relatively low price and a small mass, which makes it easier to work with them. The main disadvantages are associated with binding to a power source. In addition to using a good long wire, you also need to make sure that it does not get in the way. The power of electric snow blowers is not very high - it does not exceed 5 hp. with.

But snowplows with gasoline engines have a capacity of about 6-15 liters. with. Their distinguishing features are maneuverability and independence from power sources. Such snow blowers can be used without much effort, clearing large snow-covered areas.

3 pros and no cons

I present to the attention of all handy summer residents a universal mini-scraper. It is very simple to make it, and the benefits of it are a wagon and a small cart.

Well, firstly, it has a small weight, and therefore you can easily and quickly remove snow with it (work productivity increases significantly). Yes, not just clean up, but how to transport it somewhere on a sled to virgin lands. Secondly, it is convenient to remove snow from roofs with such a scraper without damaging the coating. Thirdly, in the summer you can make a trolley out of it by screwing the wheels to it.

And now the important remarks. The height of the handle should be at waist level. It is better to assemble the scraper bucket on self-tapping screws so that everything can be disassembled on occasion.

Vasily Ivanovich Pikulev. Kudymkar, Perm Territory

Snow scraper

It took: a strip of sheet metal 100 mm wide, a metal sheet, self-tapping screws, a screwdriver, a tape measure, a pencil, steel corners, press washers, hinges, metal shears, a wooden pole.

To make it convenient to clean the snow from the roof (and not swim in it!), I made a special scraper.

Strong frame

I bent a strip of sheet metal into a frame 800 × 400 mm in size, rounding its corners (1) and overlapping the edges with small self-cutters (photo 1)

By the way

Rectangle size 800×400 cm

In the middle of the workpiece, across, I installed a partition (2) made of sheet metal. I attached it to the frame with one edge using small steel corners and self-tapping screws with a press washer. On the other side, I attached the plate with self-tapping screws to a wooden pole - the handle of the product.

Light flaps

I cut out two flap strips (3) 420 mm long from sheet metal. I attached each blank to the frame on both sides of the partition on the hinges with self-tapping screws (photo 2)

In the lower part of the partition (on both sides) I installed stop rods for the flaps from long self-tapping screws with cut off caps (4)

Operating principle

For convenience, when cleaning the roof, I stand on a chair, take a pole with a scraper and direct it up from me along the roof. At the same time, the ribs of the frame, and then the fenders (lying on the stops) cut the snow - it creates pressure on the entire structure, pressing it more tightly against the roof.

When the device moves back, the snow mass rests on the flaps from below, bringing them to a vertical position and allowing the snow to move to the edge of the roof.

This scraper was appreciated by all fellow villagers - even skeptics!

On a note

For the convenience of cleaning sloping roofs from snow, the pole must be attached to the frame at an angle, depending on the characteristics of the roof. In addition, with a small growth of the user, it is better to make the angle sharp, and for a tall person it will be more convenient - 90 degrees.

It is the stops that allow the flaps to rise vertically when the scraper moves down and clear the snow.

Scraper on wheels

I clear the road from snow and ice with a hand scraper.

To do this, I cut the pipe d 27 cm in half lengthwise, cleaned its edges - a scraper blade (1) was obtained. For the frame I used a handle and a frame with rear wheels from an old baby stroller. From the water pipes cut out two stops (2). I cut a groove in each and put it on the wheel axle. In addition, I fastened the “blade” and the frame with racks cut out of metal pipes (3)

In order not to spoil the road surface when clearing snow, I fixed a protective conveyor belt on the underside of the “blade”. Painted the structure.

A do-it-yourself snow scraper was made by almost every person living in a private house. The design usually resembles a shovel. Sometimes the scraper is a rectangular plate with an attached handle. To make it easy to work with the tool, you need to know the design selection parameters. If desired, the inventory can be improved, and then cleaning the snow with a scraper will become entertainment.

Pig Selection Options

Outlets offer a variety of scrapers for clearing snow, among which it is difficult to choose a convenient tool. Snow removal equipment has the following differences:

  • the size;
  • material for the manufacture of the cutting and working surface;
  • tool weight;
  • shape of the working surface, handles;
  • the presence of additional devices that simplify the cleaning of large deposits of snow.

Usually, when buying a scraper, a person is guided by his financial capabilities, which is extremely wrong. The price is of great importance, but you need to take into account the amount of work ahead.

First, scrapers are hand tools. Choose the size of the inventory according to their physical capabilities. The lighter and more comfortable the scraper, the less tired you feel from snow removal.

Advice! Plastic scrapers are ideal for women and teenagers. The inventory is characterized by light weight and snow does not stick to its surface.

If you rely on lightness and long service life, they prefer equipment made of aluminum or composite alloys.

Secondly, cleaning will be easier if the person does not bend over to scoop up snow. The scraper handle is selected according to its height. It is optimal to purchase a tool with a height-adjustable handle. Each member of the family can control the scraper, adjusting the handle for themselves.

Buckets of snow shovels and scrapers are made of plastic, composite alloys, plywood, aluminum, galvanized. The cuttings are usually wooden or thin-walled aluminum tube. The material of the handle affects only the comfort of the scraper. The bucket is selected taking into account the surface on which the snow is supposed to be removed. In order not to damage paving slabs or other types of decorative coating, cleaning is carried out with a plastic or wooden scraper. On the ground or old asphalt, it is better to row with a bucket made of aluminum or galvanized steel. A plastic and wooden shovel will do, but they should have a steel blade on the edge to protect the canvas from abrasion.

Advice! For convenient storage in the barn, it is preferable to purchase snow removal equipment with a removable handle.

Snow shovels are produced with different bucket widths, and it varies on average from 25 to 80 cm. If a large amount of work is to be performed, it is better to purchase equipment with increased bucket sizes, for example, a drag scraper. The tool can be operated even by two people. For easy movement, choose a model equipped with rollers or small wheels.

DIY snow scraper

Many owners of private yards make snowplows and shovels themselves. Usually the structure is assembled from a sheet of tin or plywood and a handle. Craftsmen approach the issue creatively. Draw up a drawing of a scraper for snow removal, where wheels, stops, skis and other devices are provided.

Snow scraper on wheels

To clean a large area from snow, scrapers-dumps are made, and wheels provide the convenience of moving them. To make a working surface, you will need a piece of pipe 60-80 cm long, 27-30 cm in diameter. The workpiece is dissolved with a grinder along into 2 segments. The one-piece semicircle for the blade is strongly bent. A strip 3-5 cm wide is also cut off from it. You can try to slightly unbend the semicircular segment, but carefully to avoid the formation of dents from blows with a sledgehammer.

When the blade is ready, proceed to assemble the scraper on wheels:

  1. A steel plate is welded perpendicularly to the back side of the blade strictly in the center. On its edge, 5-7 holes are drilled in a semicircle. Another hole is drilled in the center of the plate.
  2. Take a piece of pipe. One hole is drilled at the end. The workpiece is connected with a bolt through the central hole of the plate. The tube will rotate up and down on the bolted connection. Now a second hole is drilled on it, coinciding with those on the edge of the plate. It turned out the adjustment mechanism for raising the blade. Another bolt is used to fix it.
  3. A pair of wheels for a scraper is taken from an old stroller or made from a piece of pipe, with rubber wheels fixed at the ends. The second end of the tube of the blade adjustment mechanism is welded to the center of the chassis.
  4. The handle in the shape of the letter "T" for the dump is made of a steel pipe with a diameter of 20 mm. It can simply be welded to the center of the chassis at the desired angle, but it is better to make an adjustment mechanism, such as on the blade.
  5. The scraper is almost ready, but it will scratch the tiles, knock out the rubble from the asphalt. You can improve it with a patch knife. It is cut in the form of a strip from a thick conveyor belt. Along the entire length of the lining and the lower part of the blade, through matching holes are drilled, the parts are connected with bolts. The finished structure for cleaning a large area of snow is painted, providing protection against corrosion.

Before starting the cleaning of layers of snow, a convenient angle of the bucket and handle is set. The elements are securely fixed with a bolt on the adjusting plate. Pushing movements forward begin to rake the snow.

Advice! If cleaning takes place on a dirt road, and the snow has packed or turned into an ice crust, it is better to remove the rubber blade. The metal edge of the bucket will make it easier to cut the frost.

The manual scraper on wheels can be easily converted to a shovel-engine. The handle is disconnected from the chassis and put on the walk-behind tractor with the help of a hitch. If a motor is lying around on the farm, it is permanently installed on a scraper, having previously welded a frame under it. The drive to the wheels is provided through a belt or chain drive.

Scraper with brush

When cleaning tile sidewalks, roofing, a telescopic snow scraper, additionally equipped with a brush, is convenient. The shop version consists of a sliding aluminum rod, at one end of which a comfortable handle is fixed. A rectangular plate is attached to the second end perpendicularly. One of its edges is plastic or rubber, and the second is made of stiff bristles that form a brush. With the hard side of the scraper, thick layers of snow are first removed. Brush sweep away the remaining thin layers.

A similar scraper can be assembled independently, but it is better to attach the brush to the back of the blade on wheels. After one pass along the paving path, the improved scraper leaves a clean tile without the slightest trace of snow.

Ski scraper drawing

The traditional metal snow scraper in the form of a rectangular plate and a U-shaped handle is hard to push. Tired back, arms. In addition, the scraper edge will often cut into the ground if the tool is held at a slight incline. The improved design shown in the drawing helps to simplify the cleaning of thin layers of snow. In fact, the job is to install the finished scraper on the skis.

Runners 1 m long are made from corners. The edges are folded up so that the skis do not crash into the ground. The scraper at an angle is fixed to the skids with bolts, having previously welded the lugs. The lower edge of the working plate should also be on the skis, and not rest on the ground.

DIY snow scraper

Before starting the manufacture of a scraper, you need to think about where the snow is to be cleaned with a tool. From this question will depend on its shape and design. For cleaning a thin layer of snow from a flat surface, the simplest option with a U-shaped handle is suitable:

  1. A rectangle is cut out of an aluminum sheet 3 mm thick or plywood 5-6 mm thick. The width of the workpiece is taken as standard - 50 or 60 cm. The length depends on the physical capabilities of the operator. Usually adhere to a parameter from 0.8 to 1.2 m.
  2. If plywood is chosen for the scraper, the edges are framed with steel tape that protects against abrasion.
  3. For a U-shaped handle, it is desirable to find a thin-walled tube. An excellent option is the frame of an old folding bed. It is made of aluminum tube, and it is already bent with the letter "P". The handle is fixed to the plate with bolts.

The scraper is pushed through the snow with both hands, holding it at an angle towards you. Cleaning with a wide tool can be done by two people.

It is more convenient to clean large drifts with the removal of snow outside the territory with a drag scraper. In such a tool, it is most difficult to make a bucket. It is cut out of thin galvanized or sheet aluminum. The joints of the connected fragments are fixed with rivets or bolts with a diameter of 5-6 mm. A U-shaped handle is fixed to the bucket with a bolted connection. Fastening is carried out as often as possible so that when lifting the ladle laden with snow, the sheet metal does not break.

A plastic scraper is used to remove snow from the roof. The design consists of a handle with end fastening of a rectangular plate. With self-production, the working surface is cut out of a plastic barrel. It is desirable to make the handle collapsible from aluminum tubes. With such a scraper it is more convenient to clean the snow from the slopes without climbing on them.

For a collapsible handle, tubes of different diameters are used. If the blanks are the same thickness, use adapters. It is necessary to find at least small pieces of a smaller diameter pipe. Long pipes are mounted on the workpiece at both ends. So that the scraper handle does not come apart during snow removal from the roof, the joints are reinforced with a bolted connection.

The inconvenience of the end model is the cleaning process. Snow has to be pulled over. After the passage of one strip, the scraper is again thrown up to the top of the roof slope.

The best telescopic scraper for removing snow from the roof is a frame structure. At home, the handle is similarly assembled from aluminum tubes. A rectangular frame made of a rod or a thin tube is attached to the end. The size of the part depends on personal preference. A long strip of waterproof fabric is fixed to the lower frame element. A piece of an old awning or a thick film will do.

Snow removal is carried out by cutting the layers. The scraper frame is pushed along the roof slope from the bottom up. The cut snow slides down the tape, crumbling under the foundation of the building.

The video will help in the manufacture of a simple and reliable scraper:

Conclusion

A do-it-yourself snow scraper is better because it is given the desired shape and size, which determines the convenience of work. In addition, inventory is free.

With the onset of winter, the owners of private territories have new worries. They have to constantly clear the courtyard area from snow. To make this hard work more convenient, it does not hurt to have a portable snowplow for such an occasion. Most often, the owners use a manual snow scraper, which allows you to quickly clear the adjacent areas of the territory, exterior items and roofs of houses from precipitation.

Before heading to the store to buy the right tool, you should find out which manufacturers produce the highest quality and most reliable snowplow equipment. But in order for a snow shovel not to disappoint, you need to look not only at the manufacturer. The ease of use of the purchased device largely depends on the size and material. If you wish, you can consider the option of making a snow shovel with your own hands, but in this case, you will first have to find out all the nuances regarding such devices.

In the design of a snow shovel, two main elements can be distinguished - a bucket for collecting snow and a handle. Sometimes in stores you can also find such models that are made using a larger number of parts. But even against the background of such differences, similar instances are intended to perform the same function.

Traditionally, wood, plastic and metal are used to make snow shovels.

Made of plastic

The plastic used by manufacturers must be frost-resistant.

For some models, it is complemented by a metal edging on the bucket, which allows the product to more easily withstand mechanical loads and increases its service life. Plastic shovels are more convenient to use due to their light weight. This is the perfect solution for women and teenagers. At the production stage, the material is treated with chemical compounds, and the area near the handle with the bucket is protected by a special edging, which makes the product more wear-resistant.

from wood

They are most often chosen by those owners who seek to save money. The main disadvantage of such devices is the fragility of the material. In addition, wood tolerates moisture much worse than plastic, which very quickly causes cracks to appear on the surface. Snow shovels made of wood are best used for clearing freshly fallen snow. In order to easily cope with ice and wet precipitation, it will be necessary to additionally equip the bucket with a metal edging, which will increase the operational period of the tool.

metal

These shovels are the most durable, and therefore last longer than other snow removal tools. But they are also more expensive than other types, although this is not surprising, given their high level of performance. Metal shovels can easily cope not only with snow, but also with frost.

To be less tired, you can purchase a tool made of aluminum or duralumin, which has less weight than steel products. Aluminum is lighter than wood, but still does not have the same amazing strength as metal shovels. Compared to it, duralumin looks preferable, because this material is much stronger, although much heavier than ordinary aluminum. Steel shovels require considerable physical effort, therefore, as a rule, only men work with them.

When evaluating shovels by weight, it is also necessary to pay attention to the handle. For more convenient work, the handle must correspond to the growth of the owner. Cleaning the area with a short-handled shovel will be very tiring.

Not less important so that the bucket is the correct width. The wider it is, the more snow it can collect. But to remove wet precipitation, it is best to purchase a small shovel.

It is most convenient to clear the yard of snow using a three-sided model, since it allows you to hold all the collected light and loose snow. Its bucket has longitudinal ribs that increase the degree of its sliding on the surface.

Even when choosing a snow removal tool, you need to pay attention to the nature of the work and the individual load.

So that snow clearing equipment can be transported in a car and conveniently stored, manufacturers produce special folding and collapsible models. There are also solutions for children - small shovels that will allow even little helpers to take part in joint cleaning.

Making a shovel with your own hands

It is not necessary to spend money on buying a snow shovel.

If desired, each owner can make it on their own, thereby saving not only money, but also time looking for a suitable model.

There are no special difficulties with the manufacture of a shovel for removing snow. Many owners of private territories have long been engaged in the manufacture of wooden products with their own hands. But for those who have to make a wooden snow shovel for the first time on their own, it does not hurt to first find out what materials will be required for this work:

  • nails and screws;
  • wooden rail;
  • strip of galvanized steel;
  • plywood sheets 5 cm thick.

After preparing everything you need, you can proceed directly to the assembly of the tool:

  1. First you need to make a back wall, for which you need a piece of plywood 4-5 cm wide. This part should turn out in the form of an arc and have a height in the center of no more than 8 cm, and narrow in the sidewalls to 5 cm. For further fastening of the handle, you need to in the middle, make a cut with a bevel of about 1 cm.
  2. Now the rail needs to be attached to the profile of the back wall and mark the place for cutting off the excess. In this case, the cutting will fit snugly into the cut.
  3. After the scoop is ready, it must be attached to the wall arc and attached with nails. Usually three nails are enough - one is driven in exactly in the middle to the back wall, and the other two - on the sides. Be sure to inspect the bucket and make sure that there are no gaps. Otherwise, during cleaning, adhering pieces of snow will be absorbed into the material, which, as a result, will deform very quickly.
  4. After making sure that the edge of the handle is closely adjacent to the plywood sheet, it must be fixed with self-tapping screws.
  5. For the lower edge of the scoop, in order to strengthen the fixation at the junction of the handle with the back wall, it is necessary to prepare steel strips of the required length. Finished strips are attached to the tree with self-tapping screws.

In order for the snow clearing tool to serve for a long time, it is advisable to make a bucket for it from stainless steel or galvanized metal.

For a better understanding of what it will look like, Let's take a closer look at the workflow:

Scrapers for giving

There are times when it snows more than usual, and you have to devote a lot of time to cleaning the area. Not always, even with the help of a wide shovel, you can quickly cope with this task. For such a case, the owners of private territories would do well to have a scraper in their arsenal - a scraper for snow removal. Such a tool in its appearance is an ordinary snow shovel, only with a wide bucket. With the help of this device, it is possible, without much effort, to clear areas near the house and paths from snow masses.

Structurally, the scraper looks like a wide snow bucket with a large arc-shaped handle attached to it. Depending on the size, you can work with such a tool in two or four hands. Working together with a drag scraper allows you to clear the area from snow by moving large layers of snow.

But you can use such devices only for cleaning light snowfall. To remove packed snow masses and areas of ice, you will have to use a shovel. Although in this case there is a good solution - a scraper on two or four wheels. With the help of such a shovel, you can clear the area of wet deposits without much effort.

Scrapers are in many ways similar to snow shovels. In particular, manufacturers use the same materials for their manufacture.

DIY manufacturing

To make your own snow scraper, you do not need to have special knowledge. This tool differs from a conventional shovel in that it will require more material. But in this case, it will still be economical.

To make a simple wooden scraper yourself, you will need a wooden board and a couple of bars. One side needs to be upholstered with a metal strip to improve the glide of the fixture. The bars will be needed to make a square frame, which is later attached to the board with one side using self-tapping screws.

But you can offer another option for manufacturing a scraper, which involves adding wheels to the design. For such a snow removal tool you need to prepare the following:

  • Metal sheet;
  • an arc-shaped handle (for example, from an old stroller);
  • self-tapping screws;
  • two small wheels;
  • narrow steel pipes;
  • conveyer belt;
  • welding machine.

The process of making a scraper for snow removal on wheels will look like this:

It is not always possible to find a metal sheet on the farm. In this case, it can be replaced by any abandoned large diameter pipe. It needs to be cut into two parts, and then take one and use it as a scoop.

Winter is a difficult time for owners of private territories. At this time of the year, they have to regularly clean the area from the snow that has fallen. But doing this job will be easier if they have a special tool. Most often, a snow shovel is used for this purpose. But for larger territories it is not always enough.

In such a case, it does not hurt to purchase a snow scraper. Although this device for clearing the area from snow can be made by hand.

Due to the fact that the scraper has a simple design, it can be made from the wood lumber available in each household and thereby save a considerable amount of money. But the main thing is that the snow scraper will ideally meet the requirements of the owner, which will make the work as convenient and efficient as possible.
