But for the ethnic style, only those that most sharply emphasize the national flavor of this country are suitable. Be guided by the fact that a person from the threshold could understand that you have conceived not just an oriental, but an Indian interior.

Provence

Freshness - this is the feeling that arises first when looking at the Provence-style interior. It will not be difficult to choose a carpet - the same pastel shades and floral motifs that are automatically associated with this style are repeated in carpets.

Scandinavian

Modern styles

grunge

You can do without carpet. And if he asks for a grunge-style living room, then this is a plain carpet with any pile length that is nice for the owner. Shaggy will take root here in the same way as a perfectly smooth rug. The colors are not bright - the color itself is unimportant, even if it is purple, the muffled tone is important.

Country

Another cheerful style, reminiscent, like Provence, of life in the fresh air. Only here there is less French: lining on the walls, check and roses in textiles. Try to pick up a carpet following simple rules:

• for bright and colorful furniture, a calm shade of a carpet is better, better than a plain one;
• the floor covering can be beaten as follows: either in contrast (for a dark floor - a light carpet and vice versa), or take a carpet a tone lighter or darker than the floor;
• a large drawing reduces space, so such drawings are contraindicated in small living rooms;
• the warm or cold color of the carpet can also add variety to the color scheme of the room: if it is cold, take a carpet of a warm shade, and vice versa. Support this contrast with a few more color accents, such as sofa cushions.

Separately, it is worth mentioning the ability of carpets to “report” about the interests and hobbies of people living in this house. For example, next to the piano, it is quite possible to lay a carpet with a pattern of black and white stripes that form the keys. The young artist will love the bright colors of the carpet with crayons.

Shape and size

Two more characteristics of carpets, but not related to style.

As for the sizes, there is a generally accepted classification and common proportions:

• small carpets are 0.6x1.1, 0.8x1.5, 1x2, 1.5x2 m;
• medium - 1.5x2, 2x3 m;
• large - 2x3.5, 2x4.2.5x4.3x4, 3x5 m.

Before you go shopping, experiment with colored tape - lay it out with the space that you intend to take under the carpet. Or start from the size of the model you like and lay out its perimeter with tape. This will allow you to estimate the future area of ​​​​the carpet in advance.

Now on sale you can find not only standard carpets of rectangular, square, oval and round shapes, but also with variously cut edges. However, priorities should be set as follows: first of all, it is worth focusing on style and color, and only if there is a choice, one or another form can be preferred.

This does not mean that the shape of the carpet does not affect the overall perception of the interior. This is especially clearly seen if the carpet occupies a small space and serves to zone the room. But we will talk about this in the next chapter.

Where to place?

Nowadays, fashion says that you should not buy a carpet that will take up the entire room from wall to wall - that way we will not distinguish it from carpet. And if it is smaller than the size of the room, we have some freedom in its location. By the way, no one forbids spreading more than one carpet in a room.

The location can be approached functionally: its place is where the feet touch the floor when the person is sitting. Therefore, most often carpets are laid next to sofas and armchairs.

Another criterion for placing a carpet in the living room is the zoning of the space. It acts as a binder for a group of pieces of furniture, which turns out to be a kind of "island". For example, a sofa and armchairs can be combined with a carpet into an island of relaxation in front of the TV.

In the same way, you can use it to highlight the area reserved for work or hobbies. The carpet of "keys" has already been mentioned above - it perfectly highlights the area reserved for playing music.

Often the coffee table becomes the center of the living room space. Under it, you can place a suitable rug, the dimensions of which will be prompted by the neighboring furniture. The round shape is associated with integrity, completeness. It works well for highlighting the center.

Small rugs are suitable for placing color accents. They can be placed in front of armchairs or, if the room has a fireplace, then in front of it.

If there are several rugs, they may not be the same, but at the same time they should have something in common - a color scheme or material and a manufacturing method.

• One of the fashion trends is the selection of a carpet and curtains, if not with an identical pattern (this is also possible), then at least with a similar one. If there is no suitable carpet, let it be sofa cushions made of curtain fabric.
• A carpet that matches the color of the walls is not the best solution, because it looks rather boring.
• The stripes on the carpet can change the perception of space - it "lengthens" along the stripes. This can be used to visually correct rooms with "bad" proportions. Paths have the same property, so you should not lay a path in a long room - it will become even longer.
• A round rug and a round chandelier are a good combination. But it is worth knowing that a large round shape visually reduces the room, which means that it is only suitable for large living rooms.

The choice of carpet for the floor in the living room according to Feng Shui

• The Chinese believed that the best colors for floor carpets would be red and brown. It is these colors that will give the dwelling vitality and attract wealth to its owners.
• According to Feng Shui, the ideal shape for a carpet that will lie in the living room is round. In other words, a round red or brown carpet underfoot is an optima. And square and rectangular ones are associated with the energy of mental labor, so it is better to lay them in offices. Oval are suitable for any room.
• There are also tips on the length of the pile - a long and fluffy pile is preferable, because it is he who brings health and happiness to the inhabitants of the house.
• Of the materials, it is better to give preference to natural.

The first thing to start with is to find out the standard sizes of carpets. Carpets

usually supplied in standard sizes; 1.2 x 1.8; 2.4 x 1.8; 2.7 x 2.4; 3.0 x 2.7; 3.6 x 4.2 m, I may have missed some of them, but all of the above are the most common in most stores.

Before you go shopping for carpet, grab a tape measure or measuring tape and find out what the best carpet size for your room space will be. Now that you know the standard sizes for carpets, this should be easier.

To determine in advance the size of the future carpet, for example, you can use any colored tape and lay out the outline of the future carpet with it. This technique will allow you to see its dimensions and proportions, as well as assess whether they (the proportions and dimensions of the carpet) will suit your room.

If the furniture in the room is arranged around the perimeter (square) or your living room is square in shape, find the carpet that you like best and cut it to the required size. Just remember that most of the carpets are no more than 3.6 m wide (the length can be different), i.e. in any case, you will not be able to get a square carpet with a side of more than 3.6m, unless of course you are confused by the seam on the carpet.

What carpet size is best for your space? It is impossible to answer this question unambiguously, because it depends on the dimensions of the room, the arrangement of furniture, etc., but you should not choose a rug that will look like an island in the center of the room.

It is good if you have a carpet that is on the edge of the furniture or even directly under it, but this will already depend on the furniture. For example, if you have a lot of furniture with long legs and a large room, then a carpet will suit you well, as in the photo below:

When you decide on the shape and size of the carpet, you should start choosing it by color. Many beginners make the same mistake: they may even bring carpets home to try and not find the right one for years. Obviously, if you start your carpet selection without furniture (which you should ideally start with), it won't be that difficult, however, if you need to coordinate your selection with existing furniture, then don't leave the house without a fabric (or pillow) sample from the sofa. and chairs.

The fabric sample you have can be a good help in choosing. But if it’s hard for you to imagine how the carpet will be combined with furniture over a small piece of fabric, it’s better to take a pillow from the sofa or just a pillowcase from it to make it easier to “travel” shopping with it. This way you will have a large fabric swatch so you can better try it on in the store.

If the carpet is hanging on the wall in a showroom or store, ask to have it removed because the color of the carpet can change dramatically and you can see how it will look on the floor. It's much easier to see which carpet will look best in your home if, again, you have all the important coordinating fabrics with you. Lay them out on the floor next to the carpet.

If you are choosing an ornamented carpet, then be sure to look at the rules for combining various ornaments. This will allow you to more professionally match and match the different patterns on the carpet with other items and furniture in the room.

To be able to see the many shades on a carpet, and most importantly, to correctly combine them with other items in your home, of course, a long journey from knowledge to experience is required. However, it's very rare that you won't be able (in one trip) to choose the right mat, thanks to the fact that you will have all the necessary fabric samples with you.

Some carpet shops offer a service and are even willing to give them a "try on" in the hope of selling it. Check if this service is available in your area.

Never buy a rug without trying it on first at home. Or at least if you're not 99% sure it will fit, don't buy it. "Can I take it for approval?" ask this question and it's the only way (which many shops understand) to check it. However, most stores, especially state-owned stores, will not be willing to provide you with a carpet until you have purchased it.

If you cannot take the carpet with you “for trying on”, you can ask for the closest to its color, or the same, small sample of the rug, and then at home choose the prototype of the future carpet that you need in size and color according to this template.

The price when choosing a carpet is not the surest indicator of whether it will look good or not. It is often possible to choose an inexpensive rug that will fit and harmonize better with the rest of the room than a chic, expensive rug that doesn't match in color or texture.

Choosing a carpet by texture is also a difficult task for novice designers. To choose the right carpet, you will need knowledge of composition, namely the concept of compositional contrast. After all, thanks to it, you can decide how your carpet should be: with a long or short pile, traditional rectangular or any other shape, with a rough or calm texture and texture, etc.

Also, another important aspect in choosing the right carpet is the style of the interior in which the room is designed. Judge for yourself, you would not use an ordinary mat in an interior designed in one of the luxurious classic styles, such as baroque, or a bearskin instead of a rug in a hi-tech interior.

Carpets in various rooms of an apartment or house:

Canteen

If you plan to use a carpet on your dining room floor, make sure it is at least 60 cm larger than the dining table on all sides.

Even if you can’t see the living room from the dining room, to create a harmonious flowing space, the carpets must harmonize with each other to a certain extent. If they are next to each other, they should be similar, but don't just buy two identical Persian carpets (in most cases this happens), because it will be too simple and boring. In the dining room, the carpet can be larger in size, and in the living room a little less, or vice versa. The same applies to the pattern on the carpets and their colors.

Bedroom

Sometimes you can get by with a smaller bedroom rug, even if you want to step out of bed onto a cozy, cool surface. Just place it lengthwise under the bed (as in the picture below).

Kitchen
