In Orthodox literature, there are enough examples of the benefits of prayers for the dead. We present at least two such cases.

In the magazine "Wanderer" for May 1862, there is a revelation communicated to the Svyatogorsk Father Seraphim by one of the Athos hermits. “The reason for my entry into monasticism was a vision in a dream of the afterlife of sinners. After a two-month illness, I became very exhausted. In this state, I see two young men come in to me; they took my hands and said, "Follow us"! The meaning of this dream was soon explained. I received a letter from Tatyana Nikiforovna, in which she informed me that the Lord helped her arrange an eternal commemoration for her husband, my brother, in Holy Athos.

So important for the souls of the departed are prayers for them, especially at the Divine Liturgy, that, by God's will, sometimes the souls of the departed appear alive with a request to pray for them. Here is one such modern case. The deceased husband began to appear to one woman in a dream with a request to give two rubles. The death of a person is a tragedy for his family and friends. Sometimes it seems that the deceased can no longer be helped, except for a funeral, a commemoration, a monument on the grave and good memory of other people. But actually it is not.

Since ancient times, Christians have spoken about the importance of prayer for the dead. It can be short and in your own words, it can be silent when a person cannot speak because of his grief, but it can also be long.
Many holy fathers themselves composed prayers for the departed. According to legend, the first example of a permissive prayer, which is placed in the hand of the deceased, was written by the Monk Theodosius of the Caves in the second half of the 11th century at the request of one of the Kiev princes.

Even earlier, in the 8th century, the famous theologian and defender of holy icons, the Monk John of Damascus, in memory of his deceased friend, composed 13 funeral stichera, which can still be heard at the funeral service. However, the Church takes care of a person even at the most tragic moment of his life, when the soul is separated from the body - for this there is a special prayer for people who are in a long and painful agony.
As soon as a Christian has died, one can read the canon about the one who died and the Psalter with intensified prayers for the soul of the newly deceased about his soul, and then for the last time the person is brought to the temple for the funeral.
Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh said remarkably about the love of the Church for the human body, which manifests itself during the funeral service: “We find this love, this care, this reverent attitude towards the body in Orthodoxy; and this is reflected in an amazing way in the funeral service. We surround this body with love and attention; this body is the center of the funeral service for the deceased; not only the soul, but also the body. And indeed, if you think about it: after all, there is nothing in human experience, not only earthly, but also heavenly, that would not reach us through our body.
According to the teachings of the Church, it is very important to pray for the newly-departed (recently deceased person) in the first forty days from the moment of death, since at this time the soul of a person goes to the Last Judgment either in heaven or in hell, but the dead need prayers after this period. After death, a Christian cannot alleviate his fate on his own, but the prayers of loved ones, commemoration at the liturgy and distribution of alms with a request to remember a person can change the fate of a person at the Last Judgment. Once, a monk was buried in the Kiev-Pechersk Monastery, who had many unconfessed sins. Other monks, together with the abbot, saw at night how their negligent brother was tormented in hell. The astonished monks began to pray for the sinner, and in new visions the brother's face became brighter and more peaceful. In the end, Christ forgave the sins of this man, and he went to heaven.
