How to sew new covers for the sofa and armchairs with your own hands (instruction with photo). Do-it-yourself master class on patterning bedspreads on a corner sofa Covers and capes for upholstered furniture patterns

Initially, eurocases were called products manufactured by the Italian company Ga.i.Co. But the idea turned out to be so successful that now this name has become a household name for a whole group of products manufactured under numerous trademarks.

A classic eurocover is a rather expensive product, since it is made using a special fabric made using the “bielastico” technology. Elastic threads, which are woven into a fabric made using similar technologies, allow the cover to stretch, taking the form of a sofa.

Accordingly, only a few manufactured sizes are used for numerous and diverse models and types of furniture.

The first reason for using it is to protect both old and new furniture.

If there are small playful children and pets in the house, the additional coating will become a barrier and will take on all the animal hair, dirt, scratches and puffs.

In this case, you can use the cover on a leather sofa to preserve the integrity of expensive upholstery. Periodically, it can be washed or dry-cleaned, and with a complete loss of aesthetic appearance, throw it away and sew a new one without regret.

The second reason is savings on upgrades. Even with the most careful use, there comes a time when you need to completely change the upholstery of furniture. But this process is very expensive, in addition, it may require transportation to the workshop and time.

When hauling, you will need to completely disassemble the structure and the mechanism for transforming the sofa, which also does not contribute to extending its service life.

Using a cover is the most budget option, which guarantees no additional damage to the mechanism and product filler.

The third reason is aesthetic. Still, it's quite an expensive piece of furniture. And when changing style, not everyone succeeds in acquiring new sets.

Using a material with a new texture, color and pattern for covers can significantly change the design of the room. In addition, the use of one material for covering can make a set in a single stylistic solution from completely different types of furniture.

How to sew a eurocover on a sofa yourself

This process is not too complicated, the main thing in it is the correct calculation of the amount of fabric and an accurate pattern. Naturally, for different types of sofas, it will be different.

To begin with, consider the simplest option - a case for.

In fact, this is the most convenient type of folding furniture, not only for sleeping, but also for self-tailoring the cover. The soft part of this small thickness. Accordingly, the pattern for the cover will be the simplest.

The most important parameter by which a professional massage therapist will choose is the reliability and stability of the structure.

The level of popularity of folding beds with a mattress has become so high that manufacturers have begun to produce specialized models with improved technical characteristics. Read about how to choose the right compact bed.

Similarly, a cover is made on. In fact, according to the patterns, two sofas are obtained without one armrest each. The only nuance that you should pay attention to is which of the parts the corner part will refer to.

Considering the non-rectilinear configuration of the corner sofa, the issue of fabric design comes first. It is necessary to avoid striped patterns, since with a separate pattern for each element, the direction of the stripes will not coincide.

DIY sofa covers

If cutting and connecting all the elements of the cover into a single structure seems too complicated, you can make small capes for armchairs and sofas.

This cape consists of three parts. Lining - a large piece of fabric, which you just need to trim the edges. Cross cape.

The length of the central part is the full size along the contour of the sofa. Starting from the floor of the front part and ending with the middle of the back part, if the sofa is near the wall.

If the furniture is placed so that the back can be seen, naturally the length of the outer cape will be from floor to floor. It is necessary to add 3-5 cm allowance for the hem.

Similarly, the length of the fabric for the armrests is measured. Starting from the junction with the sofa seat, ending with the floor. The width of the cuts is taken according to the corresponding dimensions of the furniture. Each time you need to add a value for allowances and seams (5-7 cm)

The main secret of such a cape is the rigid rods that must be deepened into the gaps between the armrests and the seat and between the seat and the back.

This must be done so that the fabric of the cape on the sofa does not wrinkle when they sit on it. The size of the elements should be 7/8 of the length of the slot.

The material can be wood, but to secure the wide side between the seat and the back, it is more advisable to take an ordinary polymer water pipe, since it can be bent at the required angle.

The main attention in this design should be given to the design of the corners of the armrests.

By sewing brass buttons to the edge of the cape, you can tie them with a decorative cord. Using an additional element from the same material as the upper part, you can sew buttons to it.

You can use decorative lacing in several ways, threading it through holes or tying it around the top. The easiest way to tie a decorative knot.

Owners of corner sofas are often faced with the fact that a completely suitable product loses its aesthetic appearance. A couple of stains or scratches on the upholstery completely ruin the overall look of the room. It also happens that you want to keep your favorite sofa in its original form, but you can’t blow off the dust particles from it. Ordinary bedspreads or capes are inconvenient: they move out, stray and don’t really protect, only furniture covers can help with this. Let's get to know them better.

Features and Benefits

Furniture covers perform important functions:

  • Protection. The cover can be purchased with the sofa. Small children and pets make the case an absolute must-have. New upholstery will avoid hazards such as scratches, puffs, hair and smudges.
  • Update. Over time, the sofa loses its saturated color, rubs in places, irremovable stains appear on it, which have their own history, traces of claws and wool. The cover perfectly hides all the existing imperfections.
  • A new style. No matter how beautiful the purchased sofa is, it will eventually get bored. Yes, and fashion is a very capricious lady. In the new season, the old color may be a sign of bad taste. A well-chosen cover will not only refresh the interior, but also allow you to always stay in trend.

Among the advantages are the following:

  • sofa safety. The covers, in contrast to the upholstery, which requires disassembly of the sofa mechanism, retain its factory assembly, and, therefore, do not harm its internal parts.
  • Practicality. As soon as the product becomes dirty, it can be quickly removed and washed.
  • Ease of installation. You can wear the product yourself. It doesn't take much time. If desired, you can change the covers every month or week.
  • Diversity. On sale there are products from materials of different colors and textures, all possible styles and types.
  • Price. The most expensive cover is cheaper than reupholstering and even cheaper than a new sofa.

Kinds

You can cover the entire sofa with covers, or you can cover individual elements. In this case, their cost will be lower, however, they will not perform all the functions of a full cover. Let's stop on the covers for the entire sofa. There is a wide range of covers for corner sofas. Various styles, materials and prices.

It is worth considering only the size of the structure. Where is the ledge on the right or left. There are armrests or a shelf - it does not matter, since models for all sofa options are on sale. It remains only to find them.

Types of covers for corner sofas:

  • Cape. It is a cover made of dense material, fixed on the sofa with decorative ties, ribbons or Velcro. Sometimes zippers can be used. The product is well fixed on the furniture and does not slip, unlike ordinary capes.

  • Rubber product. An elastic band runs along the edge of such a cover. As a rule, such products stretch well and are suitable for furniture of any configuration.

  • Eurocover. A dimensionless product that takes any shape. This quality is due to the elasticity and elasticity of the material. Eurocovers are durable, versatile and practical.

The form is distinguished:

  • Free. Can hide the flaws of the furniture. Bag-like product is fixed with bows, ribbons. Made from dense materials. Sometimes in combination with lungs.
  • Falling down. A feature is the presence of a large number of frills, draperies. Fastened with ties and Velcro.
  • Fitted. Well-fitted or well-stretched cases. Ideally repeat the shape of the sofa.
  • Dense. This option is often sewn to order, as it should perfectly fit the size of the sofa. Any wrinkle and unevenness will be evident.

Materials and fixings

When choosing a case, you need to think about the material from which it is made. The quality, practicality and service life of the product depend on its characteristics.

You should also consider the conditions for the use of furniture:

  • permanent sleeping place. It is necessary to choose wear-resistant materials that do not fade, do not fade and also remain durable. Mostly synthetic fabrics have similar characteristics. Equally important is their environmental friendliness.
  • Presence of small children and pets. Choose non-staining material with the expectation of frequent washing. Aversion to puffs and picking up wool will also be a plus.
  • Living room. The face of the house, a place for receiving guests. It is worth dwelling on materials with an interesting texture, unusual colors and elegant design.

Consider the most common materials:

  • Velours. Velvety, soft surface, low cost compared to real velvet and wear resistance ensured popularity of velor. Does not accumulate static electricity, is easy to clean and does not cause allergic reactions.
  • Flock. Soft yet durable. It does not deform and repels water. A distinctive feature of this material is its immunity to light. It does not fade in sunlight.

  • Cotton. Natural origin provides an eco-friendly and breathable structure. It has bright, beautiful colors due to the ease of staining. Absorbs moisture well.
  • Jacquard. It can consist of both natural and artificial fibers. Retains color for a long time. Stretches well. The main characteristic is strength, due to the presence of synthetic polyester and elastane in the composition. A feature is an interesting relief pattern resembling a tapestry.
  • Relax. It looks like real leather. Does not absorb water and well restores shape. A distinctive feature is the absence of puffs, which pet owners will be happy about.
  • Nubuck. Looks like suede. Distinguish between natural and artificial according to the type of raw material - leather. The latter is much cheaper and more unpretentious in care. Natural nubuck has low wear resistance and requires special care. Artificial nubuck is often used for furniture in offices and food outlets.
  • Microfiber or microfibre. Thin polymer fiber. Copies natural suede. Good for washing. It has high absorbency and dries quickly. In addition, moisture will not get from the front to the wrong side, which perfectly protects the furniture. The microfiber cover does not shed or roll down.

  • Eco-leather. Textile base coated with rubber or polyethylene. To make the material look like natural leather, a special impression is made. It is used for office furniture and as a replacement for genuine leather in home interiors.

  • Polyester. Synthetic fabric. Wear-resistant, safe. Can take any form. Doesn't wrinkle.
  • Chenille. A material that has gained recognition due to a special, characteristic pattern. Previously, such a texture was created manually by additional winding of threads. The use of automatic machines has reduced the cost of chenille. The composition has cotton, acrylic, viscose and polyester. Does not tolerate moisture and allows only dry cleaning.
  • Velveteen. Holds its shape well, which is important for cape cases. Does not spread and does not crumble. Tight and wear resistant. To return the original appearance will help the usual solution of ammonia.
  • Teak. Cotton fabric with herringbone pattern. Does not shed or fade in the sun. Due to the special weave, it has a high density.
  • Damascus. The basis is silk, woolen, cotton or linen fabric. Material distinguished by nobility and brilliance. A characteristic feature is a floral ornament.

  • Brocade. Currently made from man-made fibres. Rough and colorful - it can become the main accent of the interior. The presence of metal threads requires special care.
  • Tapestry. Natural wool, cotton, linen, silk, gold and silver threads, lurex and synthetic fibers are used as composite materials. High density, as a result - dimensional stability and wear resistance. A wide selection of textures, colors, ornaments and plots. Holds color well. Does not tolerate ironing and home washing. Must be dry cleaned.

So that the cover does not get off and does not cause inconvenience, it should be fixed, for this there are the following methods:

  • Zipper. Used for tight cases. Most often hidden, but sometimes it stands out in bright color, as an element of decor.
  • Ties. Suitable for free-cut products. Materials may vary. Decorative cords, satin ribbons, lace.
  • Buttons and buttons. Decor element that performs a fastening function.
  • Fixing tapes. Velcro - fastening in two parts: a hard one is nailed to the sofa, and a soft one is sewn to the cover. Hidden elements.
  • Elastic band sewn on the edge. Suitable for non-removable pillows.

Dimensions

Corner sofas are large and massive. Thanks to the folding bed, it becomes even larger. The parameters of such products lie within a wide range and depend on the number of people who will use the design for sleep. Children's products, for example, have a bed length of 150 cm. If an adult uses a sofa - 200 or 210 cm. Standard dimensions are 3800x2000 mm.

It is better for owners of furniture of unusual dimensions and shapes to stop at universal covers made of stretch material. On the corner sofas they sit like a glove.

When buying a cover, it is worth considering not only the length of the bed, but also the height of the back. Corner sofas are great for all types of covers. You should also pay attention to the side of the ledge and the presence of armrests and shelves.

Brands

Many furniture manufacturers offer covers for their products:

  • An example of such a manufacturer is the world famous Ikea. However, there are many companies that are not related to the furniture of this company, nevertheless, they specialize in covers for it. The number of proposals is uncountable. Different prices. Many manufacturers offer the service of tailoring a cover to order, taking into account the wishes of the client. It can be various style solutions or products for furniture of an unusual shape.

  • Turkish products are the most popular. Low cost and ease of care won the heart of the consumer. These qualities are due to the use of synthetic fabrics. The material most often consists of cotton, polyester and elastane. The final cost of the product depends on their ratio. The larger the proportion of synthetics, the cheaper the cover will be. The range of products is wide, mostly monochromatic colors. They benefit from the texture of the material.

  • Turkish manufacturers hold the palm in terms of the variety of products offered. Due to their versatility and convenience, well-stretching cases are most widely used. Manufacturers also focused on the production of these particular models. Something else can be found, but somewhat more difficult and costly.

How to take measurements to buy a cover?

When buying a universal cover for a corner sofa, you need to measure the length of its back and correlate this size with the stretchability parameters of the cover. The length of the corner sofa can reach 5.5 meters. Owners of a good eye can just figure out how many people will fit on the seat of the sofa.

In most cases, the covers indicate the category of furniture for which they are intended: double, triple. In the case of capes, you need to specify the model of your sofa and find out if the selected cape fits your sofa. When buying, pay attention to which side the protrusion is on.

How to put on?

Making a corner sofa with a cover does not require special knowledge, the main thing is to be attentive and accurate.

Dressing is done as follows:

  1. It is necessary to move the sofa away from the wall in order to be able to get to any part of it.
  2. We lay out the cover according to the corners of the sofa. Let's focus on performance.
  3. If there are no additional instructions in the instructions, then you can put on a cover from either side. The main thing is to do step 2 correctly.
  4. We spread the material over the entire surface.
  5. We fix the cover. Products are most often fixed from above and below.
  6. Stretching types of covers form voids. We get rid of them with the help of special gaskets. We insert them into the gaps between the back and seat. Ready!

See the next video for a visual way of pulling the cover.

In order not to be disappointed in the purchase, before going to the store, decide on the following characteristics:

  • Textile. Choose based on the conditions of use. Explore the most common materials and choose the option that suits your characteristics.
  • Color. Decide on a color scheme based on the overall style of the room. Remember that light-colored covers get dirty quickly, which means they require frequent washing. Give preference to a dense product that will retain its structure after a large number of washes.
  • Style. Directly depends on the type of construction. Find out if there are ready-made cases for your model.
  • Dimensions. The cover should fit the dimensions of your sofa. Specify which dimensions are required for the selected model.

The variety of types, styles, shapes and sizes of covers is completely confusing. Therefore, use some secrets of their purchase:

  • A non-stretch ordinary cover requires knowledge of the exact dimensions of the furniture. Check with the sellers for the required sizes and check them again before buying.
  • Cases to order, of course, are quite expensive. However, this is a way to get a completely unique thing that meets all practical and aesthetic requirements.
  • Eurocover - the easiest and most convenient option. Easy to put on and take off, does not require special care. On sale there is the widest range of this type of covers.
  • When buying, pay attention to the weakest points of the product, namely: the quality of fittings and fasteners. This will help you immediately recognize a fake.
  • Do not make a final purchase decision without checking the quality of the seams, the integrity of the fabric, and the absence of defects.
  • Remember, the more decorative elements, the more likely they are to fall off. In addition, a simple product is easier to care for.
  • Read the instructions. There are covers made of fabrics that require special care.
  • Sometimes covers are sold with ready-made related products that match in style - cushions, tablecloths, decorative pillows and napkins.

Do it yourself

Creative people can make interesting and stylish cases with their own hands. This can be done in different ways. For example, knit or sew. Knitted covers will be especially relevant in the cold season. Use the crochet technique, such a cover is denser than knitting, will not stretch and will last noticeably longer. To increase the wear resistance of the product, add synthetic threads to natural ones. You can knit with rhombuses, squares, use different colors. You can decorate the edges with lace.

It doesn't matter if it is a sewn or knitted case, the scheme for its creation is approximately the same and consists of the following steps:

  1. Choice of fabric, yarn.
  2. Measuring sofa parameters.
  3. Calculation of the amount of material.
  4. Pattern making.
  5. Sample, basting.
  6. Sewing.

In addition to desire and material, you will need tools:

  • threads;
  • a set of needles;
  • sewing machine;
  • scissors;
  • measuring instrument (meter, tape measure);
  • marker, bar of soap or crayons.

When choosing a fabric, consider the conditions in which it will be used. In the presence of children or pets, it is better to stay on non-staining and durable materials.

The parameters of the sofa are necessary to calculate the amount of material. For the convenience and accuracy of the result, it is necessary to visually divide the sofa into rectangular parts and calculate their areas. The sum of the areas of all rectangles will be the amount of fabric needed.

You should also estimate the amount of material needed for small items and add them to the total. Remember that the fabric needs to be bought with a margin, so we add another meter to the resulting number. Better to have a surplus than a shortage. In addition, the remaining material can be useful in the restoration of worn parts.

We wash the cover, iron it, put it on the sofa and admire the result of our labors. The uniqueness of each sofa model leads to the impossibility of general recommendations for making patterns. Each sofa has its own characteristics.

When measuring a sofa, mark its dimensions on paper. Consider scale. Later these parameters will be superimposed on the material. Style decisions are entirely up to your imagination. However, with a lack of sewing experience, avoid fabrics with ornaments or complex patterns. The fabric will have to be customized according to the pattern, which will require not only skill, but also more material.

How to cut?

The main and most difficult step in creating a cape for a sofa is making a pattern. If there is no or very little experience in sewing covers, it makes sense to practice on any unnecessary fabric. We make a pattern, sew it by hand with large quilted stitches and try it on. There are almost always places that need to be improved. We customize. A miracle happens and the cover sits perfectly on the sofa. We carefully unpick it and get a finished pattern that is perfect for the desired sofa.

If you have enough experience and self-confidence, then you can do without training. To make a pattern, the following tools are needed: paper (millimetric paper is better, but ordinary paper will do), crayons (make sure that they are not easily washed), a meter and scissors.

Here we use the previously prepared sizes:

  • To do this, the fabric must be spread on a horizontal surface with the wrong side up.
  • We mark the sizes with a piece of soap, a marker or chalk. We leave allowances of one to two centimeters for seams and fitting.
  • Finished silhouettes are cut and sewn by hand or cleaved together with pins.

  • We make a fitting and evaluate the general appearance of the resulting semi-finished product.
  • We eliminate inaccuracies and shortcomings with the help of pins and a couple of stitches. Having achieved a satisfactory result, we flash everything on a typewriter.
  • Then we remove the remaining hand seams and sew on various decorations. They can be functional locks and buttons.
  • Lace, frills, frills will add romance to the interior. Decorative ribbons, ribbons and embroideries emphasize originality.
  • Keep in mind that all additional elements should not only fit into the overall interior, but also match the main material of the cover in terms of texture and color.

You should also think about convenience. A couple of pockets help you store small items like your TV remote.

However, every good seamstress has her own secrets:

  • The more seam allowances, the more room to maneuver when fitting the product.
  • The stronger the threads, the longer the cover will last. In the case of using thin threads, the product will have to be altered very soon, as it will begin to spread at the seams.
  • Remember, the stitch size depends on the fabric. Too small a stitch will destroy its structure. We sew dense materials twice.
  • Take a closer look at the sofa. Often even, at first glance, areas have some deviations. Add a couple of millimeters to the parameters of the areas in which you are not entirely sure.
  • If the cover slips off, then you can solve the problem with a clothesline, simply by sewing it on the back.
  • From the remaining material you can sew wonderful decorative pillows.

Ideas in the interior

Do not forget that the sofa is the main piece of furniture, a kind of emperor of the room. Therefore, it is worth paying close attention to his style. However, even the most beautiful and elegant image sooner or later becomes boring. The use of covers will help to solve this problem. They can easily change the look of furniture. Cases can be anything. By mood, by day of the week, by season. Luxurious or ascetic. With and without frills. Two-color, three-color and one-color.

Consider different design options:

  • The combination of warm, eye-pleasing colors is perfect for a child's room. And the striped material of the sofa and pillows will not let the latter get lost against its background. Ruffles in smaller stripes will add a touch of fun to the interior.

  • Patchwork covers will add coziness and originality to your interior. In addition, they are very interesting to create manually. Bows, ribbons will perfectly decorate a plain sofa and add zest to your interior.

Over time, the old sofa loses its appeal, or after the next repair it does not fit into the overall design of the room. You don't have to get rid of the furniture. You can sew a sofa cover in an easy way which is quite simple, it will take a little time, fabric and a minimum of tools to work. Are there small children in the house, pets? Removable option is the best. The cover can be easily removed and washed. If the house has new furniture, a removable model will help protect the furniture, last a long time, and maintain an impeccable appearance. About how to sew a cover on a sofa in an easy way using for this, it is written in the article.

Choose the shape and size

Some owners change the upholstery, but most prefer to purchase a removable cover. Convenient, easy to change. It is better to sew the product on the sofa with your own hands in two versions, for a festive, ordinary day. On a holiday, decorate upholstered furniture with bright elegant capes. The living room will take on a solemn look. On weekdays, you will need practical upholstery. The photo on the right shows different models of capes, covers of various shapes, in an unusual design.

Before you sit down to sew a cover with your own hands, you need to consider the shape and size. There are models that completely cover furniture, handrails, backs, legs. The fabric completely covers all parts, creating the illusion of a whole, flying. Models are good for a house decorated in romantic, English, classic, modern styles. An element on the sofa is a good fit.

Basic measurements

For connoisseurs of practicality, they will like covers sewn exactly to the size of the furniture, or a model consisting of a “seat” and armrests. Various ruffles, flounces, a lot of bows are out of place. Practical side pockets on the cover, armrests will serve as both decoration and "shelves" for storing useful things. Rest reading is a favorite pastime for most; you can put an unfinished book, glasses, newspaper, magazines in your pocket. Models are applicable for styles such as: country, hi-tech, rustic, modern. The option is successful if the sofa is click-clack in the house.

The size of the cover depends on the design style, shape, requirements of the owners. It should be borne in mind that if the product covers only part of the sofa, then the colors should be in harmony with the furniture. If the sofa is completely covered with a cape, then the color does not play a role, it remains only to take into account the overall design of the room. Do you plan to sew a cover on a corner sofa with your own hands? It should be noted that the fabric will take a little more, the pattern will be more difficult. But even here there should be no difficulty.

Material

Any work related to needlework begins with the choice of fabric. When choosing a fabric, it should be borne in mind that the main function of the cover is to protect the sofa upholstery from dust and various contaminants.

In order to sew an element on a sofa, you can purchase any material, the assortment is rich. Very popular are:

  • velours;
  • flock;
  • teflon flock;
  • microfiber;
  • cotton;
  • jacquard.

Each fabric has its own characteristics and properties. Which material is better, no one will say. When choosing, you need to pay attention to the composition of the fiber. For furniture, preference is given to the material in the composition, which contains wool and cotton.

The fabric for the cover must meet the requirements:

  • practicality is important - the fabric should not require complex care;
  • hypoallergy - a person spends a lot of time on the sofa, the fabric must be safe for people's health;
  • should not accumulate static electricity;
  • it is desirable that the cover can be washed or dry-cleaned in the future;
  • the fabric should be soft to the touch and at the same time dense;
  • The color should last for a long time.
  • external bright appearance is not the main indicator. The fabric must be durable;
  • if there are kids and children in the house, then the fabric should be chosen durable and resistant to dirt, sharp claws;
  • good fabric with a special impregnation of fat and water repellent. Then the housewives will not be afraid of spilled tea, overturned food. The advantage of this material is that the cover is easily washed.

Process steps

Do not choose a complex cut cover. Even a sofa with curly handrails, with an unusual shape of the back. A cover for a corner sofa or clack can also be simple in cut. When the fabric is selected, it remains to calculate the footage. To facilitate the work, preference should be given to volumetric models, or models that cover the back of the sofa and handrails.

If upholstered furniture without armrests, you can get by with a cape. Its sizes are different. If there are no skills in working with a needle, but you want to sew a practical fabric decor item for a sofa, then an easy way is to make a cape.

Volumetric models are easy to cut, but the fabric takes a little more. Calculating the footage is easy:

  • measure the height and width of the back of the sofa;
  • measure the dimensions of the handrails;
  • estimate how the details will be located on the fabric when cutting;
  • add a few centimeters on all sides for seam allowances;
  • add 10-15 centimeters for hem and trim.

Volumetric models are often sewn in one piece. The cover stretches over the entire sofa, attached to the armrests. Straps, straps, buttons, buttons are used as fasteners. The attached photo on the right shows different ways of decorating. When the model is invented, you need to prepare everything you need for work and you can start sewing covers for sofas.

Materials and tools

Consider the manufacture of a cover of the simplest type - a cape. In this model, you will need to sew a cape on the sofa, solid for the back and seat. Separately cut and sew the armrests, connect the parts into a single whole and arrange the finished product. Everything is done simply.

To work you will need the following:

  • fabric, footage is calculated according to the size of the sofa;
  • tape measure;
  • tailor's chalk;
  • sewing pins and needles;
  • wooden ruler;
  • threads (preferably with lavsan for a sewing machine);
  • scissors;
  • pattern paper

When everything is prepared, you need to cut the cover. How to sew sofa covers with your own hands is written below.

Cutting out details

Using a centimeter, measure the backs and armrests of the sofa. According to the obtained dimensions, draw on paper. Do not rush to do everything at once on the fabric. The proverb that it is better to measure seven times and cut only once is very true in this case. A lot of fabric is used on the cover and an incorrectly cut piece will overshadow the whole work. Therefore, it is more practical to first cut everything out on paper and attach it to the sofa, see if the size fits.

The pattern must first be applied to paper

When everything is checked that the drawing fits perfectly, you can start cutting on the fabric:

  • iron the fabric through damp gauze. Cotton or wool fabrics are best washed in warm water. This must be done so that the material shrinks, and subsequently, the finished product does not become smaller;
  • fold the fabric right side inward. Pin the drawings with safety pins;
  • trace the outline of the paper with tailor's chalk. After 1.5-2 cm, draw a second line;
  • cut along the second line.

Details are cut out, you can start sewing.

Sewing

Work begins with a blueprint. The video in the article shows all the stages of work.

  • fold the patterns with the right side inward;
  • sweep with temporary screeds;
  • the resulting cover immediately try on the sofa.

If the result suits, then all seams are ground. Bend all the edges, sweep again, check the evenness along the bottom, then scribble. The stitching will take literally half an hour or an hour. The complexity of sewing is only that the details are voluminous, it is difficult to move the fabric under the needle. If you are interested in how to sew a cover on the armrest of a sofa, then you need to look at the photo on the left. The working methods are the same as for a regular cape.

When everything is sewn, it remains to decorate the resulting product. Ribbons, pockets will be used. You need to think in advance what kind of ties, fasteners will be. All this should be outlined when cutting.

After decorating, put the product on your sofa. Sewn cover for the sofa with your own hands, ready. You can invite loved ones to see and sit on your favorite, but already a new sofa.

Courageous people can use a few bright pieces of fabric, or create some kind of pattern. If this is the first time you want to start sewing, then it is easier to take a plain material.

Given the design of upholstered furniture, fabric for tailoring must be purchased with a margin so that furniture clothes can be worn freely. With upholstered furniture, it is not easy to calculate the exact proportions, so do not try to sew a cover that will fit the sofa, highlighting the curve of the corner.

In addition, if you have planned any decorations (ruffles, bows, frills), you will need a little more additional material. If the product is not entirely successful, you can decorate problem areas with additional decorations. Also, you can sew small pillows, as shown in the photo.

Payment

To correctly determine the dimensions of the fabric for sewing a cover on a corner sofa, add the length and width measurements of this furniture, and multiply the resulting amount by 2. To correctly calculate the dimensions of this furniture, it is better to break it into small sections.

For sewing new clothes for a corner sofa, at least 8 m of fabric will be required. Therefore, everyone decides for himself what cost of fabric to choose. It will be quite difficult for inexperienced seamstresses to calculate how much fabric you need to purchase.

If you sew a cover for this piece of furniture with your own hands, it is better to use a plain material or with a small pattern. We do not recommend using striped fabrics: they will have to be cut in one direction, which will greatly increase its consumption.

Pattern

For a corner sofa, which has a rectangular shape, the pattern is much easier. It is necessary to painstakingly measure out all parts of the furniture, then transfer all dimensions to paper in a reduced form. We transfer the finished drawing with the correct dimensions to the fabric. When cutting the fabric, do not forget about the allowances for seams and hem, as shown in the video.

There can be no special rules for cutting clothes on a corner sofa, since each piece of furniture has its own tailoring options. However, there are recommendations that will help you avoid some mistakes when creating clothes for furniture.

  1. It is better to draw a pattern with large allowances. After you make a fitting, extra centimeters can be cut off;
  2. Do not try to make a perfectly accurate drawing, as it is very difficult to make a perfectly accurate calculation. Try to sew the cover so that it fits freely on the furniture. This will be enough to change the look of your furniture;
  3. Use a variety of embellishment accessories to hide problem areas in your work. They can not only decorate your work, but also perfectly complement the design of the room. Different forms of pillows can also come in handy, which will not only hide failed places, but will also find the most useful application;
  4. For a sofa with leather upholstery, thin foam rubber can be additionally stitched inside the cover. This is in case you have pets that can scratch the skin.

Summing up

Sewing a cover for your sofa with your own hands will bring you great satisfaction. Do not hesitate, the updated furniture, as well as the interior of your home, will delight you and all family members.

It's a pity when your favorite sofa becomes old and loses its original appearance. Sometimes our fluffy younger friends - cats and dogs - help him grow old. Someone tears with claws, someone marks the territory. Of course, we also "put" a hand to some extent.

The first thing that suffers over time at the sofa is, of course, the armrests. The pattern on the upholstery becomes very light, and it does not brighten evenly, but in spots; the armrests are torn.

The problem is easy to solve, in fact, if you pick up a beautiful fabric. From this fabric we will sew such armrests in an hour that no one will think that this is your work.

The pattern for the armrests can be found online. I will not offer you this option.

one). We take an old newspaper / wallpaper / whatman paper. We put this sheet on the armrest one, then on the second.

2). Visually evaluate the width of the pattern and length. We make marks for ourselves with a simple pencil. It can be dots, it can be lines. That is, in fact, we will have a rectangle. I recommend making the length with a margin so that the armrest can be easily refueled.

3). Cut off the excess with scissors. We put the resulting blank on the selected fabric.

Tapestry, for example, has a lot of advantages. In addition to the luxurious coloring, you will also get a reliable armrest option - I think this is important.

Note that you don't have to sew anything. But I do not advise you to throw the workpiece like this. This is exactly the blank, because ideally it is better to sew a fringe along the edges, which will either match in color or support one of the tones of the pattern.

If you need a more complex option, then I suggest working directly on the couch.

We put the chosen fabric on the armrests. And we put it so that the fabric "softly hugs" the armrest. We fix the fabric, for example, by tying it in a knot. Don't make it big. Then cut off the excess fabric.

Or you can make an armrest by tattooing. Here's how easy it is to do:

  • we put fabric on the armrest (it is better to choose a thin material). We fill the fabric as if the armrest has already been sewn by us.

Folds should form on the side. Now, of course, they do not lie beautifully. But we set the direction with our hands, do it beautifully and fix each step with tailor's pins. We remove the excess with scissors, cutting the fabric carefully.

Then we remove the draft version of the cover and lay lines on the typewriter in those places where we have outlined the folds for ourselves. There is nothing complicated, believe me. And you will love the result.

By the way, I recommend making a drawstring at the bottom of such home-made products - the fabric is folded neatly by one and a half centimeters.

We sew it on a typewriter and use the most ordinary linen elastic band (thin). There are many options, but it is better to choose an elastic band in the color of the fabric. That is, either black or white.

The covers can be washed both by hand and by machine.

But it is better to check the fabric before sewing - maybe it shrinks.

I think that your sofa will now be the most beautiful.
