GOST 24698-81 for external doors

Everyone has long known that the outer door is an integral part of every building. It not only complements the architectural image of the facade, but also protects the interior from climatic influences and unauthorized entry.

Exterior doors made of wood have been successfully used in residential and public buildings over the past few centuries.

In 1981, the State Committee of the USSR developed and put into effect GOST 24698-81 "Wooden exterior doors for residential and public buildings."

It is this document that is the guarantor of high-quality and reliable products of external doors to this day.

Application area

The name of State Standard 24698 speaks for itself, its technical specifications are the basis for the production of exterior doors for residential and public buildings.

Despite the extensive scope, doors of public buildings for special purposes are not subject to this standard. These include theaters and museums, railway stations, palaces of culture, exhibition pavilions.

Basic properties

External doors, in terms of their operational properties, must meet several mandatory characteristics, which by default turn into advantages of wooden products:

  • a high degree of sound and heat insulation (the presence of a rubber seal on the frame or door leaf);
  • incredible wear resistance, achieved by impregnating the outer doors with special agents, the properties of wood are close to those of metal;
  • resistance to corrosion and decay, as a result of the use of modern antiseptic compounds that prevent the appearance of fungus;
  • resistance to temperature changes, which prevents seasonal deformation;
  • fire safety, due to special processing, the ignition process is difficult to implement;
  • strict geometry without distortions and sagging structures;
  • equipped with a reliable locking system.

Typology and variety of door products

All wooden products are marked and conventionally divided according to several criteria, which simplifies the process of production, sorting and operation. Each classification is approved according to GOST 24698 and GOST 475.

According to the type of destination, products are marked with entrance and vestibule (H), service (C), hatches and manholes (L). The latter serve for passage to the basement, attic and other technical premises.

Constructive solutions for products are determined primarily by the type of filler of the canvases. This can be a panel structure with insulation, or with insulation and addition of metal sheets. A separate type of constructive solution is solid wood doors, as well as products with or without a threshold and transoms.

As for the number of canvases, then, like other door structures, the outer ones are single-floor and double-floor, with the same or different widths of the canvases. GOST 24698 also indicates that external doors are hinged in one direction according to the opening method. The choice of the type of glazing is small: a blind sheet or with a built-in double-glazed window.

Basic requirements for outdoor wooden structures

According to the main standard, all external doors made of wood are manufactured in accordance with the previously specified GOST 475.

In compliance with the regulations, in type H doors, the lower part of the leaf must be protected with wooden planks, super-hard fibreboards or steel in the form of galvanized thin sheets. These protective materials are attached with waterproof adhesive or screws.

Two sides of the leaf and the service door frame (C) are protected by sheet steel and covered with asbestos cardboard. The H-type structure is made with a panel or frame configuration. All wooden products are made with a high level of moisture resistance.

Not the last requirement for the manufacture of the door and its assembly units and parts is a clear and stable design geometry. In height, width and diagonal, a web deviation may be observed, but it should not exceed a threshold of 2 mm.

Materials for the production of wooden doors

Unfortunately, traditional wooden entrance doors are becoming less and less common. Wooden products have high strength, reliability and long service life.

According to GOST 475, wooden door structures are made from natural wood, wood and plywood boards, polymers, paint and varnish and glued products, fasteners and other materials that are fully capable of meeting all required standards.

To ensure high moisture resistance of products, it is advisable to use pine, fir, larch or cedar wood as a material. If the requirements for increased moisture resistance are not mandatory, then it is possible to use birch, aspen, alder, linden and other wood species.

It should be remembered that the use of wood of different species in one product is unacceptable, as well as the use of wood that is most susceptible to decay.

Web facing

Despite the internal structure of the external wooden door, its surface, which faces the street and is front, is necessarily treated with a special coating, protective varnish or paint.

It should not be forgotten that it is undesirable to veneer the front surface of the product with the use of linden or poplar wood. However, exterior finishes are often made of fiberboard material.

Depending on the material and design solution, the surface of the structure can be made in two versions: smooth or embossed. The axiom of all wooden products is that the better and high-quality coating with cladding, the longer the product will please the consumer.

In conclusion

GOST 24698-81 "Wooden exterior doors for residential and public buildings" is still the main basic document as technical guidelines for many manufacturers of these products.

If all the requirements are met, the reliability, strength, durability and aesthetics of the door become automatic, and there is no doubt about the quality of such products.
