Make a wooden ladder with winder steps. Ladder with winder steps do it yourself

In the manufacture and installation of stairs, builders often face a problem in the form of a lack of space. Its excellent solution is wooden stairs with winder steps. To make them yourself, you need to know some of the nuances, which we will discuss below.

It should be said right away that winder steps cannot be considered as a separate element of the structure, since their use determines the overall design of the product. As a rule, winder wooden stairs have a complex structure. Instead of a traditional platform, they have a smooth turn.

At the same time, the tread norms are observed only along the midline, while the inner edge turns out to be narrow. As mentioned above, winder steps are done for the sake of saving space in the room.

They can be installed anywhere - both along the wall and right in the middle of the room. In terms of convenience and compactness, this is the best option.

However, where there are pluses, there are also minuses. Winder ladders in this sense are no exception.

Their disadvantages include:

  • The steep climb;
  • narrow steps;
  • complexity of calculations;
  • laborious manufacturing process.

Before you start working on the structure, you will have a difficult choice: make calculations and make the stairs yourself or buy a structure ready for installation.

If you want to purchase a finished product, then you should consider the following nuances:

  • It will still have to be adjusted to the specific dimensions of your room. In most cases, this process requires more time and effort than self-production;
  • Not always the finished product is made of quality materials;
  • The price of a finished staircase is disproportionately higher than the material from which you can make a staircase yourself.

It follows that it is much more expedient to take up the manufacture of the staircase structure on your own, unless, of course, you have at least a little experience working with wood.

Making stairs

materials

For the manufacture of stairs, before performing all the calculations, you will need to decide on the material. It is best to use hardwood. An excellent option would be an oak staircase.

The wood structure of the oak structure looks great with almost any interior. And if desired, it can be painted in any color to give the design originality. However, you can use ash, as well as other types of wood.

Winder ladder calculation

For an example of calculation, let's take a staircase that has two parallel marches with a turn made using winders.

First of all, the future staircase must be created on paper. For the calculation, you first need to draw two marches. In the center of the march, it is necessary to draw the line ABC - this is the middle line of movement, in accordance with which the width of the steps is applied.

The line must begin to be drawn from the rounded top so that the step located in the middle turns out to be divided by the BC line in half (in the diagram, sketch a). Thus, ordinal divisions are obtained.

Advice! The greater the number of straight steps, the more comfortable the staircase, and the smoother the transition to winder steps.

Then it is necessary to draw the line DE horizontally, while capturing three straight steps, fencing the highest. The regulation of the width of the tread will begin from it, connecting the two lines on the line of motion with the middle of A.

After drawing the line until the lines intersect with the DE line and obtain the next segment, it must be continued from point D to E, until the next points are obtained. The resulting points should be connected by the corresponding lines according to the numbered value, which are marked along the line of motion.

The result of such calculations is a horizontal projection of the shape of the winding steps of the stairs on the left side. The right side is calculated in the same way.

In addition, when self-calculating winder steps, the following points must be taken into account:

  • The width of the step should not exceed 40 cm;
  • The radius of curvature must be more than 30 cm;
  • The course of the stairs should be smooth and follow the direction of the flight of stairs. Excessive tortuosity of the course line is unacceptable.
  • The design must necessarily ensure safety, comfortable lifting and comply with established standards. Particular attention in the design should be given to the height of the steps. Low steps are uncomfortable and dangerous, while steps that are too high make it difficult to climb.

The calculation of beams is very simple, using the Pythagorean law for this - the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the legs. It is necessary to add about 30 centimeters to the resulting figure.

Tool

When creating a staircase, you will need the following set of tools:

  • Drill;
  • Electric jigsaw;
  • Screwdriver;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • Roulette;
  • Hammer.

Fabrication and installation of the structure

With do-it-yourself winder steps, two types can be made - on bowstrings or stringers. The most common option is the first type - on bowstrings. In this case, the elements made in accordance with the calculations cut into the supporting base, i.e. bowstring, while the bowstring itself remains in sight.

Making a staircase on stringers is a little more difficult, since it is necessary to make rectangular cutouts in the supporting beams, on which the steps will fit. A design of this type is wider, while the stringers are hidden, and only steps and risers remain visible.

If aesthetics and conciseness are in the first place for you, then it is better to give preference to stringers. To do this, you need two beams with a section of 100 * 200 mm. The most important thing is to correctly mark the beams and make the same cutouts on them, since this will determine how evenly the steps will lie.

If the running part is located at the base of the stairs, then the steps are mounted on the bearing pillars and risers. In all other cases, the design is conditionally divided into three parts - before the race, running steps and after the race. The turn must be mounted in the middle.

When the race is located in the middle, the rotary steps are mounted on beams. It is much easier to mount straight beams at a right angle, without curly "twisting". If you want to make a rounding, then at the bend of the winder ladder you can bend a piece of plywood.

Advice! To bend plywood, the sheet can be laid with its edges on two tables so that the main part of it sags. A load is placed in the center, and the sheet itself is watered on both sides. The plywood should remain in this position until the sheet is at the desired angle.

Also, when the structure is rotated 180 degrees, three beams can be used for the race. However, the use of plywood, although more difficult to install, will make the stairs more beautiful. At the same time, in both the first and second cases, all the shortcomings can be hidden behind a plasterboard box.

Advice! In order for the flight of stairs to successfully fit into the allotted space, the profile of the stairs should be drawn on the wall. If necessary, you can adjust the size of the steps.

Most often, the installation of stairs begins with the installation of the first part. Then beams are mounted that will hold the structure in weight. All parts must be carefully sanded before installation, and the outer edges can be rounded for beauty.

When the main part of the structure is installed, it remains only to mount the balusters on the steps. They can be fixed with a hairpin 100 mm long and 8 mm thick. Railings are installed on top.

This completes the installation instructions. It remains only to paint the structure. In order for the wood to be well preserved and its natural beauty not to be lost, you can use a clear varnish as a coating.

Output

With your own handmade stairs, you can get a reliable design that will fully suit your home. At the same time, you will significantly save finances. However, without certain woodworking skills, it is unlikely that you will be able to complete this job.

Runners are called steps, the width of which increases from the inside to the outside. Naturally, the calculation of the winder steps must be carried out with special care at the stage, since the safety and convenience of the entire staircase structure depends on this, whether it is a spiral staircase or a turn of a direct march. Most often, winder steps are made when it is necessary to reduce the dimensions of the stairs by excluding the inter-span platform from its design. At the same time, a place with non-standard steps becomes not very convenient, especially for descending, because the closer a person steps to the inner edge, the less space remains for setting the legs.

When creating a staircase with winder steps, you need to follow a few basic rules:

  1. The outer part of the steps should not be wider than 40 cm.
  2. The minimum for the inner part is 10 cm (meaning its useful area, and not the very edge).
  3. The middle of the march is 20 cm, and this value must be respected throughout the structure.
  4. The radius of curvature, which characterizes the turning part, is a minimum of 30 cm.

Important! The course of the winder steps should not be winding, otherwise walking along it will not only be inconvenient, but also dangerous.

The calculation of the winder ladder can be made by various methods, depending on what angle the ladder turns.

The method of proportions, with some amendments, is also used to calculate the parameters of rotation by a right angle (90°). It should be noted that this is the easiest way, other graphic methods are more difficult, they require basic knowledge of drawing and design.

The method, called Danish, is also used in calculating the turns of stairs by 90 ° and 180 °. First of all, a horizontal projection is built, on which, as in the method of proportions, a line is drawn in the middle of the march. This line is also divided into segments the size of the width of the step. Then you need to decide on the beginning of the winder steps, the border is marked with point A. Another important point - the beginning of the winder step, located in the middle of the turn, is indicated by the letter B.

Then half of the line of the middle of the march with tread marks is unfolded so that a straight line is obtained, and a perpendicular is drawn from each mark. For the mark, which indicates the first winder step (after the straight lines), the length of the perpendicular is chosen equal to the width of the tread. For a mark at the opposite end of the unfolded straight line (mark of the winder located in the middle of the turn), the length of the perpendicular is taken equal to the minimum width of the steps. The two obtained perpendiculars are connected to each other, and the values of the lengths of the perpendiculars for all other marks are obtained. The resulting segments are stacked in ascending order in one straight line, which is projected onto a straight line, equal in length to AB. This gives complete information about the narrow sections of the steps. The found dimensions are transferred to the horizontal projection (to the AB line) and, by connecting the points with the marks on the mid-march line, the full dimensions of all winder steps are obtained.

Other Methods

When using the sweep method and the line lifting method, the horizontal and vertical curvature of the rotary structure is taken into account. In the sweep method, the first step is to determine the boundaries of the steps, after which the drawing is transferred to a vertical projection. Similar to the manipulations performed in the Danish method, the markup is placed so that the resulting segments can be transferred to another plane by drawing perpendicular lines.

Here, too, two projections are needed. The horizontal one is drawn in the same way as the previous methods considered, a line of the middle of the march is also drawn on it. In addition, points are marked corresponding to the beginning and end of winder steps. The line of the middle of the march is divided into segments the width of the steps, usually 200 mm.

The vertical axis of the vertical projection, in turn, is divided into segments equal to the height of the steps. Next, straight steps are selected and, by connecting their edges with lines, the corresponding segments are obtained, with the help of which the intersection with the horizontal projection axis is found. The resulting point is used later to construct circles that are needed to determine the vertical projection of the bowstring line. To find the tops of the steps, use the vertical axis - draw a line perpendicular to it until it intersects with the line of ascent. The projections of the obtained points on the horizontal axis will give the dimensions of the narrow parts of the winder steps. These dimensions are used to find all other winder parameters.

Slope of stairs

An important characteristic of the stairs is its steepness, in other words, the angle of inclination. Not only the ease of use of ladder equipment, but also safety depends on the steepness. The human step, its average value, is the main guideline. In other words, the convenience of moving up the stairs requires that a certain proportion be observed between the height of a person's rise at each step and the distance at which he moves forward. Normally, the ratio of the height of the ladder structure to the length of its projection on the horizontal axis is in the range from 1:2 to 1:1.75. When expressing these proportions in angular units, it turns out that the slope of the staircase should not be more than 30 °.

If you plan to move bulky objects up the stairs or several people will use it at the same time, the width of the march should be increased to at least 1.2 m, and preferably up to 1.4 m. With less saturated use, the width can be reduced to one meter . Practical Tips for Installing Winder Stairs

When trying to save space in the room, it is advised to give preference to products with rotary steps when installing staircase structures. Instead of the usual platform, such stairs are equipped with winder steps - they are also quite convenient to use. The peculiarity in their implementation is that one of each of the turn treads goes to the expansion. At the turn, a rounding of the walls is created. This allows you to reduce the size of the steps, which entails a reduction in the cost of installing the structure.

Attention! The narrow side of the running elements is calculated from the generally accepted hole, equal to 10 cm or more.

Scheme of assembly of a mid-flight rotary structure

Design choice

  • Swivel 90 gr. with winder steps at the foot or in the center.
  • U-shaped
  • Curvilinear.

Calculation of stairs with rotary stepsU-shaped type (180 gr.) occurs in 2 variations:

  1. Double structures.
  2. Three-flight with a short gap between the 2 parts of the winder steps.

Development of stairs for the house

Material types:

  1. Tree (90*180*3.5 cm).
  2. Metal (profile, corners, channel, forging).
  3. Concrete.
  4. Glass, etc.

Such designs can be combined from materials of completely different properties, and it would be better to place them in the corner of the house or against the wall, although some products, with a certain design of the room, will look good in the center of the room (turn 180 and 90 gr.). In the second case, screw structures are created, based on a central beam or a lower support. Fastening can be made to a bearing wall. This will require patients. To fasten structural elements using bolts, screws or welding.

Structure calculation

Basic Calculations

Staircase with 180 degree turning steps. mounted in compliance with the mandatory condition of horizontal distribution between parallel marches from 1/4 of their width. In the example below, a U-shape design will be considered.

Ladder with turning steps do it yourselfwill be created correctly if you determine the depth level of the running elements as accurately as possible:

  • In the center of the march, the marking of the middle line of movement ABC is made, on which the width of the treads is displayed. Starting from the top of the rounding, when distributing the steps, the line BC must form a vertical position, and divide the middle step into two equal horizontal segments. For clarity, stairs with turning steps in the photo are shown below.

Another swivel option

  • This is how sections 1, 2 ... 4, etc. are formed. With an increase in straight steps, the transition will be less noticeable. In this situation, only three of the straight steps are used - 6, 7 and 8. After drawing a horizontal segment DE, which acts as a fence for an even step 8. It is the starting point for adjusting the depth of the product, the middle A is connected with divisions 1 and 2 by movement trajectories.
  • At the next stage, a do-it-yourself turning staircase with winders is developed by continuing these contours to the intersection with the transverse line DE. It forms a contour 1-2. If you postpone it along the projection from D to E, this contributes to obtaining marks 3 ... 7. Their connection is carried out in even segments with similar points placed along the movement contour. This is how the horizontal parts of the running elements of the march are created on the left side.

Method number 2

The design of the stairs with rotary steps is regulated as follows: from the beginning of point B along the trajectory of movement, the width of the treads is set aside. This takes into account the standard at which the vertical segment DВ divides the middle step 1 along the longitudinal side into 2 identical parts.

Concrete stairs with rotary steps form a certain number of straight steps. A separate quantity can be adjusted (three steps: 6, 7 and 8), a segment AB is obtained: from a vertical segment DB. The inclined AC adjoins this segment.

Ladder height adjustment

It creates 7 divisions corresponding to 7 adjustable steps, on the selected scale. In this case, the parameters of these sections will form an increase by one part. From section A, the first section will be 2, the next - 3 ... 4, etc. A segment of 3, 5 or 1 cm is determined by one part.

Point C is connected to mark B and a line is drawn from each division point, forming a parallel to BC. Corresponding lines are obtained on the vertical side AB. Then connections of division points with sections 2, 3, 4, etc. are formed on the middle contour of movement and continue to the wall around the staircase.

Drawing of the future installation

Designs for two marches

In the same way, structures for two marches with a radial turn of 90 ° are also calculated. Initially, the middle contour of the march is drawn. Then from the central part of the arc, in two directions from it, lines (chords) are laid, corresponding to the width of ordinary steps.

There are 2 types of placement of winder steps in the center of the turn:

  1. when one step divides segment AC into 2 equal parts.
  2. when 2 steps join this line from two sections located on opposite sides.

On the average movement kennel, a plan of a ladder installation with steps is drawn. Then a step is selected, from which the beginning of the running steps comes and the EB contour is applied. It should form an intersection with the segment CA, drawn in the middle of the rounding of the staircase structure.

Point B is set at the intersection. Line AD is drawn from mark A at a given angle. AD is divided into parts. From mark A, the first division is 2, the second is 3, the third is 4 sections, etc. The end of the last part is connected to point B.

Projects of stairs from different approaches

Parallel to the formed segment BD, a line is drawn along the end points of all parts (marks 2, 3 ... etc.) until they adjoin AB. The sections where the lines intersect are connected by segments with marks 1, 2, 3, etc. on the movement contour and extended to the wall surface. The winder parameters are outlined and the parameters adjusted for the scale are determined.

To create stairs with a radial turn, a number of structural elements are created: bowstrings, stringers or other supports corresponding to the radius of the required bend of the stairs. Turning structures with winder steps are created without a bend radius. Instead, a 90° swivel arrangement is used.

The scheme of the stairs on the stringers

Winder stairs at the foot, turn 90°

Preparation for the process consists in the selection of the main details:

  1. Kosourov.
  2. Bowstring.
  3. Steps: ordinary, running, podium.
  4. Riser.
  5. Fencing: poles, balusters, handrails.

Attention! Podium should be 2-3 pieces. for a safe and comfortable ascent to the winder.

Instruments:

  • Electric drill.
  • Jigsaw.
  • Hammer.
  • Screwdriver.
  • Measuring instruments.
  • Fasteners (self-tapping screws, euro screws, etc.).

Monolithic staircase project

Project creation:

  • A circle is drawn, the diameter of which will be at least 90 cm, it determines the width of the steps.
  • An average contour of the structure is created in a circular section through the central section with a slope of 45 degrees.
  • The circle is broken into lines, they are equal to the depth of ordinary steps (25-40 cm).
  • Straight elements of the march are marked along the middle segment.
  • On an interval equal to the width of the step along its inner border, segments AC and AB are created. From them, winder steps are calculated.
  • Segments AC and AB are placed so that the internal parameters of the winder steps are 10 cm, and the outer ones are 40 cm. The height of the risers is 12 to 22 cm.
  • After marking, the prepared materials are cut.
  • A similar calculation technology is used for a device with a 180-degree turn.

At the same time, it is important to remember the basic recommendations regarding the regulated dimensions and purpose of the structure. Installation of such a product is usually carried out in an unheated room. The area allotted for the installation of the system is 1.5 sq. m. This allows installation in small buildings.

Winder stairs today are a fairly relevant type of construction. It often happens that the area of \u200b\u200bthe room does not always allow for the installation of an ordinary single-flight staircase. But there is a way out - this is a winding staircase, divided into two flights with a section of a spiral staircase between them.

This design is both convenient and practical, and it just looks stylish and modern.

Requirements for a march with a turn

The principle that any building structure in the house must meet is, first of all, safety. But also the building should be comfortable in its use. Winder stairs are one of the complex structures that must fully comply with these two principles. It is worth highlighting the main technical requirements that are characteristic of this particular type of design.

  • The main thing in the installation of winder stairs is the proportions. The steps of the stairs should be located at exactly the same distance from each other throughout the entire flight of stairs. Usually the distance between them starts from 100 mm and does not exceed 160 mm.

  • Much attention is paid to the depth of the running step. Experts recommend an approximate distance in narrow sections of 100 mm. In the central part, the depth dimensions should be approximately 200 mm, and in wide areas, the step depth parameters should not exceed 400 mm.
  • For any staircase, it is imperative to provide high-quality railings. The running design is no exception to the rule. Typically, the height of stair railings ranges from 900 mm to 1200 mm.

  • In winder structures, the parameters of the width of the flight of stairs should start from 900 mm. In principle, this parameter will depend on the design and individual features of a particular staircase model. If necessary, this indicator can be increased.
  • For the height of free passage for a person, a range of 1900–2000 mm is set. This is also an individual indicator, which is set depending on the height of a person. Taking the growth rate, you need to add 100 mm to it. This will be the optimal parameter for the height of the passage.

  • The angle of inclination of the winder ladder should not exceed 45 degrees. This figure is the maximum angle of inclination. The most convenient and optimal angle is approximately 30 degrees.
  • On average, the number of steps on winder stairs ranges from 15 to 18 pieces.
  • The winder ladder must be able to withstand a lot of weight, be stable and made of wear-resistant and durable materials.
  • The approximate overhang of the tread on such stairs should not exceed 5 mm.

Taking into account all the above technical requirements for the winder ladder, the design will be safe and comfortable for its purpose. It is also worth noting the main requirements of GOST for this type of stairs, namely:

  • the depth of the winder step should not exceed 40 cm;
  • the minimum depth of the winder step should be 10 cm;
  • the depth of the center of the winder should be about 20 cm;
  • the height of the ceiling above the stairs should not be less than two meters.

Construction types

There are several basic types of winder stairs worth noting.

  • Winder spiral staircases. This version of the winder design is one of the most compact and aesthetic.
  • L-shaped stairs are a design with a turn of 90 degrees. This option is also quite compact and takes up little space.

  • U-shaped stairs- These are winder structures, fully deployed 180 degrees.
  • Curved stairs- these are the types of structures that have the smoothest turning lines.

  • Stairs on a monokosour have a simple design. The design of this structure is placed on one support beam, that is, on one stringer, which is located in the middle of the steps.
  • Stairs on bowstrings slightly different from the previous version, but similar in design principle. In this case, the steps of the stairs are held by two wooden bowstrings. A wooden bowstring is usually additionally fastened on the opposite side with a metal rod for greater reliability.

Each of these types of construction has its own advantage, but they are all compact and save space in the living room. And also the location of the winder steps can be different. They can be located at the bottom or at the top of the staircase, as well as in the middle of the flight of stairs.

Advantages and disadvantages

Winder ladders have a number of advantages and disadvantages. Their positive features include the following:

  • compactness and space saving. Quite often, residents are faced with the problem of placing an ordinary straight staircase to the second floor due to lack of space. The winder staircase does not require a large amount of space and fits into almost any room due to its small size;

  • appearance. Winder stairs look very stylish and modern. It adds aesthetics to the whole room;
  • depending on the winder model may require much less material than for a full-fledged direct design;
  • such stairs are smooth turn, which is very convenient when moving;
  • variety of materials. Stairs of this type can be made from almost any material.

Among the minuses, the following aspects can be noted:

  • due to its compactness, on the model under consideration, several people are unlikely to be able to disperse;
  • the design features of these structures are quite complex, for this reason it is difficult for them to make calculations.

Design and calculation

Considering that the winder staircase is a rather complicated design due to its features, it is necessary to take special responsibility for the preliminary drawing up of drawings and the accurate conclusion of all calculations so that the staircase is comfortable and safe. You should take into account the area of \u200b\u200bthe room and determine the dimensions of the structure itself. After that, the following steps are performed:

  • first you need to clearly define the place where the structure will be located;
  • extremely accurately measure the height from the floor to the second floor, as well as the width of the staircase opening

  • careful attention must be paid to drawings based on measurements. It is necessary to note even the exact number of steps;
  • it is necessary to decide what type of construction will be used, what type of building materials will be used.

Drawings and methods for calculating winder steps

To date, it is not at all necessary to draw up a plan and drawings of a future design on your own. There are several convenient ways to help you do this and save time and effort. For example, you can use design programs to design various structures. These are different applications and sites where you can clearly calculate the amount of materials and other details.

You can also use ready-made drawings of winder stairs. There are a huge number of them on the Internet today, among which you can choose the right one. But sometimes there are incorrectly drawn up drawings that are not recommended for use.

And also when calculating the size of the stairs, you can resort to the help of online calculators. This is one of the most convenient ways to create a winder design drawing. These programs allow you to make the necessary calculations and adjust the set values. The programs are fully automated. They give an approximate drawing of the structure based on the given values.

Quite often, when calculating sizes, you have to use the method of proportions. Most often it is used in the design of L-shaped and U-shaped stairs. In such cases, the following steps are taken:

  • the drawing marks the middle of the march along which the line is drawn. Then, on this straight line, segments are marked that are equal to the width of the tread;
  • the boundary between straight and running steps is marked;

  • it is necessary to clearly mark the middle of the turntable of the stairs along which the segment is drawn;
  • from the line that defines the middle of the turning part, it is necessary to set aside about half the size of the winder steps;
  • from the calculated number of steps, the number of straight steps obtained from the drawing should be subtracted. At the same time, the depth of the tread in the middle sections of the march is controlled. If this indicator is less than the recommended one, then the number of steps should be reduced.

Materials and tools

Today, ladder structures are made of almost any material. They can be wooden, and metal, and glass, and concrete. Quite often, a combination of different materials is used. Usually the supporting frame of the stairs is made of metal, and the steps can be wooden or glass.

Of course, the classic and most popular option is wood. Such structures are both beautiful and light compared to the same metal structures.

It is possible to note a number of the main difficulties arising in the course of installation of ladders.

  • Particular attention should be paid to the quality of the material. The choice of low-quality products will make the stairs short-lived and unsafe. Therefore, you should familiarize yourself with all related documents and visually inspect the material for damage and other defects.
  • Considering that the winder ladder is a rather complex design, it is worth remembering the error. It is necessary to have some carpentry tools to fit the details of the structure.

It is important to install the stairs strictly at the same level. This will affect the evenness of the entire structure and its stability.

To carry out the installation of a wooden winder ladder, the following tools should be prepared in advance:

  • electric drill;
  • jigsaw (preferably electric);
  • screwdriver;
  • roulette;

  • circular saw;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • iron corners;
  • hammer;
  • pencil.

Mounting Features

Despite the fact that it is not so easy to build a winder staircase to the second floor, it is quite possible to do it yourself. To make a winder ladder with your own hands, you should follow the step-by-step instructions.

  • First you need to start making the stringers of the future stairs. To do this, a template is made on the selected material, which has a triangular shape. In this case, school knowledge of geometry will come in handy. The legs of this triangle must be strictly equal to the depth and height of the step. With the help of such a template, it will be very convenient to mark up and cut out the kosour. To cut it out, use a circular saw.
