Hearth of wheel disks. How to make a brazier from car rims: a step-by-step algorithm of actions, advantages, disadvantages

Choosing the best option for self-manufacturing of the barbecue, they are largely guided by the cost of materials. Old rims are best suited to such considerations, since not only do they cost next to nothing, but they also require space for useless storage. In addition, their shape is very convenient for placing skewers.

Despite the simplicity of the design, braziers from rims from the car are multifunctional devices and can replace a number of cooking devices:

  • traditional grill for skewers or grate;
  • smokehouse for hot smoking (with a sufficient height of the brazier);
  • cooking surface for dishes with a rounded bottom;
  • barbecue (with lid).

In addition, a metal sheet laid on top of the brazier turns the device into a classic hob.

Main advantages and disadvantages

Homemade brazier has the following advantages:

  • durable due to the large thickness of the metal;
  • thick metal allows the brazier to provide more uniform heating of cooked dishes;
  • the rigid design of the disc reduces the demands on the skill of the welder. In most cases, welding work may not be required at all to make a brazier;
  • variety of performance options.
  • The extremely low cost due to the use of waste materials is also important.

However, there are also some disadvantages:

  • such a brazier will be difficult to warm up if placed on cold and damp ground;
  • lack of legs does not allow to install the device on a wooden floor.

Certain difficulties may also arise when transporting a non-separable and non-foldable device.

Design Options

For self-manufacturing, those schemes are most suitable where minimal disk processing is required.

Necessary materials and tools

Before starting the assembly, you should provide a supply of materials and a set of tools for work. Of the tools you will need the following:

  • Bulgarian;
  • cleaning discs or cord brushes;
  • file and manual cord brush;
  • cutting discs for metal;
  • drill;
  • hammer.

If options are considered on how to make a brazier of complex design, then a welding machine may also be needed.
As materials you will need:

  • old rims;
  • bolts;
  • metal rod;
  • profile metal pipe of small section;
  • fireproof paint.

For the manufacture of a flat hob, a metal sheet with side lengths exceeding the diameter of the disk will be required.

Manufacturing technology

All work on making a barbecue with your own hands is divided into a number of stages.

  1. The maximum possible amount of dirt and rust is torn off the disc with a cord brush. If necessary, use a grinder with a cord brush attachment.
  2. A grinder with a cutting disc for metal cuts additional partitions from the open side of the disc (if any are present in the wheel design).
  3. If the holes in the disc bowl are too large, and there is a possibility of coal spilling out of them, then they are welded with a metal plate. At the same time, it should be controlled that the plate does not completely cover the bottom of the resulting boiler. A certain number of holes must remain open to allow air to enter the brazier. When completely sealed, the wood will burn through too slowly, without forming the coals that are important for the grill.
  4. From the outside of the brazier, three or four pieces of a metal profiled pipe are welded. These pipes will play the role of legs.

IMPORTANT. In the manufacture of legs, the cross section of the profile pipe and the total mass of the brazier should be correlated. The legs must withstand both the weight of the brazier itself and the mass of fuel, as well as the dishes along with the dishes being prepared.

With options for the execution of the legs can be found on the photo of finished projects.

If it is planned to manufacture a brazier of a more complex design from two or more disks, the following points should be considered during operation:

  • if the discs do not have developed ventilation holes, then their partitions should be cut out with a grinder. You need to leave the partition only at the lower disk;
  • with a sufficient height of the brazier, it makes sense to cut a rectangular hole on the side. This will allow you to report firewood when using a barbecue grill as a hob. To prevent burning firewood from falling out, the hole should be located no lower than 10-15 cm from the bottom of the barbecue.

It will be convenient if you provide the furnace hole with a door. A cut-out piece of a disk is optimally suited as a door.

For hinges, you can use either door hinges, or made independently. In the latter case, two nuts are welded along the side face of the door. The door is applied in place and places are marked on the body of the brazier for welding nuts - the counterpart of the hinges. As axes for the hinges, bolts of the diameter corresponding to the nuts are used.

IMPORTANT. If the organization of a stationary barbecue is not planned, then handles should be welded on the sides of the body in advance. The easiest way to make them is from pieces of large diameter wire or a profile pipe.

Step by step video instruction

In order for a brazier made of stamped discs to be used as a hob, its upper part should be prepared in advance for placing dishes. To do this, weld two pieces of metal pipe. The distance between the pipes is selected according to the diameter of the dishes.
The finished brazier should only be painted with refractory paint. Using the usual is not only pointless, but also dangerous to health. Particles of scorching paintwork materials will settle on the food being cooked.

A brazier made of rims is a practical and inexpensive solution. However, it should be understood that cooking with an open flame is always a dangerous undertaking. The brazier should be installed and used taking into account all fire safety measures.

When I bought my SUV, I discovered that there was a “killed” spare tire in the trunk (they forgot to tell me about it before buying). I did not know what to do with it, and left it lying in the trunk, until one day I came up with an interesting idea - to make a barbecue out of it. I didn't know how to weld metal, so I had to get creative, making sure that any components used for assembly could withstand the heat (i.e. no nickel or zinc plating).
Here is a list of tools and materials that I personally used, but this project is easy to adapt to individual individual preferences. The base can be made from a wooden pallet or other lumber, and if you have no desire to make it at all, then the brazier can be poured with concrete, and the height can be adjusted using a piece of pipe of the desired length. In general, there are many options.
Instruments:

  • Sander.
  • Miter saw.
  • Electric drill.
  • Planer (optional).

Material:

  • rim
  • High temperature paint - 2 cans
  • Bars 100x100x2500mm
  • Bolts M16 - 4 pieces
  • Set screw for wood M12 - 4 pieces
  • Steel pipe with a diameter of 48 mm - 450 mm in length
  • Threaded rods M12 - 2 pieces
  • Grill grate (various sizes) - 1 or 2 pieces
  • Wheels - 4 pieces

The hardest part of the job

Without a doubt, this is the most unpleasant part of the job - removing the rubber from the disk. After watching a few videos and trying to do everything according to theory, I ended up just taking an electric hacksaw, cut the bead of the tire, and then somehow removed it with a hairpin and a long screwdriver.
After removing the rubber from the disc, I took it to the local sandblaster, where I was allowed to process it myself. In time, it took about 11 minutes, and cost less than 600 rubles (800 rubles if the work is done by the master).

Details and painting

I purchased all the necessary components from a local hardware store. I bought a pipe and cut it there. The pipe flange, which will be installed on a wooden base, will not have to be modified, since here we will use set screws of the desired diameter. But the flange that will attach the disk to the pipe should have holes of a slightly larger diameter (they will have to be drilled) so that bolts with a wider head fit into it.
Next comes the painting. Personally, I used a special Rustoleum High Heat paint. The application of the coating follows the same principle as with any other spray paint. I painted all the details in two layers. I wrapped the wheel bearings with paper before painting so they wouldn't clog with enamel.

Preparing the foundation

The disk itself is quite heavy, so the base must also be quite massive. I wanted to make it the same weight as the disc, while still being compact, so I decided to use 100x100mm bars. I cut them with a saw so that the base ends up square.
I then drilled holes in the ends of the bars using a pre-drilled wood guide plate. Ideally, I'd like to use a drill press to keep the holes exactly the same, but since I didn't have one, I took a regular drill. I then threaded the threaded rods through the holes and then sanded the finished base.
Then I put gaskets on the threaded rods, twisted the washers on top and cut off everything superfluous with a grinder. After that, I drilled (and sanded) holes for the set screws on the top and for the wheels on the bottom.
In the end, it remains only to cover the base with impregnation and a layer of protective varnish.

We connect the disk, pipe and base

To fasten the pipe flange to the disk, I used plain head bolts (the widest possible diameter). It is necessary to make sure that the bolt heads touch the central rim of the disk. It may seem that this mount is rather weak, but as soon as I tightened the nuts, it became clear that the design does not give backlash. I closed the hole in the pipe with a special plug to fit the size so that the ash did not get inside. I also treated the cap with high temperature paint.
The pipe is screwed into the flange from one end, and into the base flange from the other. The base flange is fixed with bolts and washers. I also covered them with paint.

final chords

I used the valve hole on the disc to attach a hook to it, after which I attached a carabiner to it - you can hang various auxiliary tools on it (tongs, brush, spatula).
Finding grills of the right size proved to be problematic, but I searched the Internet and found the right options. One grate should be compact enough to fit inside and hold the charcoal, while the other should be wide enough to fit on top and hold food. In principle, one grate may be enough, since coal can be stacked directly on the metal of the disk (only if it is stainless steel or ordinary steel, and not zinc or galvanized metal), but I thought that the coals could fall out through the holes from below and spoil the wooden base.

Conclusion

I liked both the functionality and the appearance of the resulting brazier. As a person who has not yet learned how to weld metal (but would very much like to), I tried to create a fairly reliable structure using improvised means, and I think I succeeded. And also, if you remove the wheels and turn the grill upside down, you can get a pretty stylish table.
I hope you enjoyed my tutorial and find it useful!

What do you need to keep warm and cook food without gas and electricity? That's right - make a fire. This is what our ancestors did, and for a modern person, safety and convenience come first. To "secure" an open fire, use stoves, barbecues, potbelly stoves.

Why car rims?

Craftsmen always find non-standard solutions to their problems. Why invent something when you can buy ready-made? Stationary ovens and barbecues will cost a lot, and the thickness of the metal in collapsible structures does not promise a long service life. An alternative was homemade from rims. Their advantages are cheap and fast production, availability of materials, practicality and original design.

The discs themselves have the right thickness and fire resistance. The shape and size are convenient for further use of the product. The round shape is ideal for setting the cauldron.
From disks, you can make not only a device for cooking, but also a source of heating for a garage or workshop.

General points and what is needed?

Despite the ease of manufacture, to implement the idea, you will need skills in working with a drill, grinder and welding machine.

Of the materials, you will need 1-5 discs themselves, asbestos thread for insulation, metal trimming, a metal pipe for a chimney, metal corners or plates for legs. Fasteners and hinges.
The diameter of the disks can be any. Only if you make a stove for a cauldron, then you need to adjust it in such a way that the cauldron with a round bottom is half lowered into the fire.
We will analyze several options from the most elementary to more complex designs.
Cauldron oven: simple and quick for temporary use It will take several hours to make. We take 2 disks, cut out the core at the top. Next, we weld the two parts, mark the contours of the future door and cut out the “window”. We hang the door made of cut metal on hinges.

In this version, there is no chimney and ash collection tray. But if the hearth is needed for a short period or season, then it may not be worth complicating it.
For convenience, the structure can be raised on high legs made of metal pipes of small diameter. The absence of an ash tray necessitates the arrangement of a fireproof place. It is enough to remove the sod and impose a brick.

If you weld comfortable handles and paint the finished product with heat-resistant paint, you will get a noble stove for roasting meat. A cross made of metal rods is welded to the hole in the bottom to prevent unburned coals from spilling out.

The bottom can be completely welded with a thick sheet of iron and close all the cracks. In this case, all the heat will remain in the furnace. In this example, the method of making a homemade loop is interesting. The door itself is made separately and then welded - so there are no gaps for smoke to escape.

Such work will take more time and require the skill of a welder, but the finished oven looks presentable, and the cooking process will be more comfortable.

Brazier and grill from one car disk

From one old disk you can make a stylish hearth with a removable grill for the grill. It is enough to weld the legs, paint and make a metal grate in diameter.
A small-diameter disc on three high legs is convenient to carry to the right place and put away for storage. It will take the most time to make a grate with handles, although it is quite possible to choose a suitable purchase option and adapt it.
Before painting, you need to carefully clean the surface, and after - do not forget about calcination. Compliance with the application technique will prevent peeling of the paint during further operation.

For greater comfort, instead of legs, the old disk is fixed on a stand, which is screwed to a wooden base on wheels. The tree in this case is treated with Danish oil, which can be purchased at a specialized knife making store.

An interesting, but more time-consuming option from a large-diameter disk welded to a rack with a hanging grid on chains, which, if necessary, can be replaced with a cauldron.

The hearth under the cauldron according to all the rules: phased manufacturingThe manufacturing process includes the following main steps:
in the upper disk we cut a hole for the cauldron (it is better to try on so as not to be mistaken with the diameter), removing the central part;
we connect two disks by welding;
we cut a hole for the door with a grinder and weld the hinges (it is more convenient to make them before the hole is completely cut out);
We weld a latch to the door from the cut piece;
we clean and paint the finished fixture with heat-resistant spray paint in a spray can in two layers; we weld three pieces of a metal pipe as legs to the lower disk; fix homemade handles.

You can also improve the hearth-stand under the cauldron by adding a chimney and an ash pan. This design can be placed anywhere.

Potbelly stove for a garage: a solid approach In this example, the firebox consists of 3 old disks, plus one for the ash pan and one more for smoke removal, which increases heat transfer.

Stages of work:
we weld the disks together, after cutting off the core in the first three, except for the top one;
weld 4 legs from metal corners;
we cut a hole and make a door from pieces of metal in size;
for the tightness of the firebox, we insert an asbestos thread along the contour;
close the top of the 4th disk with metal;
add the 5th disc below and make a hole in it for collecting ash and a blower, completely cover the bottom with a metal sheet;
on the side of the 4th disk we make a hole and weld a pipe to remove smoke;
after polishing, it can be painted with heat-resistant paint.

In the example, the pipe has a 90º angle, which, according to experts, will cause frequent soot clogging. It is more practical to make an angle of 45 or 27º.

We present to your attention an interesting idea for making a brazier from a car disk. The author of the idea claims that the use of the disk is justified by the fact that it fits perfectly, since it has thick metal walls. Thanks to this, the brazier will not quickly burn out from hot coals.

So, to make a brazier from a car disk, we need:
- car disk;
- square grid 40 by 40 cm;
- three metal rods with a thread of 8 at the end;
- a metal square sheet measuring 250 by 250 mm and 4-5 mm thick;
- welding machine.

First of all, on the outside of the disk, we must weld a metal disk so that hot corners do not fall through the large holes in the disk.

Let's move on to the next step. At this step, we lightly bait the nuts to weld them at the locations of the legs of the brazier. The author claims that it is important to lightly bait, and not completely tighten the nuts, in order to get removable legs without welding the rods to the structure.

Mangal is almost ready. It remains to prepare the network. To do this, put the grid on the disk, take a marker, circle the mode and the extra part of the grinder.

Our grill is ready. The corners must be placed in the disk. The holes that remain after welding the metal plate will help blow through the coals. Finally, the brazier can be used without a grid, putting skewers with meat on it, or as a barbecue apparatus. In this case, you can put a cut-out net in the rim of the disc and enjoy a delicious barbecue.

Step-by-step instructions for making a brazier under a cauldron from car disks

Almost every person loves meat cooked on a fire, or pilaf made in a cauldron. For barbecue and similar dishes, you need a barbecue, which is not cheap. But any man, if desired, can build it himself from car rims and decently save the family budget. It is not necessary to be a jack of all trades, it is enough to be able to use a welding machine and a grinder. How to make a brazier from disks from a car is described in the article.

car rims photo

Car owners rarely throw away car rims, so they often lie idle in the garage for years. Even if they were thrown out or handed over to a metal collection point, you can buy old disks for a penny at the nearest service station.

Some masters use metal barrels with ordinary walls, but their thickness cannot withstand high temperatures, and holes are burned on the surface. You can also make a stove from a steel sheet purchased at a hardware store. Such a brazier will be durable, but expensive. Disks from under a car are the best material for making a furnace for a cauldron. They are cheap, durable, and easy to get.

What are mangas? With your own hands, you can make several types of foci from disks:

Advantages and disadvantages

Pros:

Minuses:

  • If the brazier from rims is made without a stand, then its height may not be enough for full-fledged work. Due to poor draft, the fire goes out.
  • Small furnace.

Necessary materials and tools

There are small criteria for choosing car rims. The best option for a brazier is a wheel from under a truck. It is made of thick steel that will last from 20 to 40 years. A hearth from a car disk will not be so reliable.

You will need:

  • rim;
  • an iron brush to clean the wheel from rust;
  • file;
  • Bulgarian;
  • apparatus for welding;
  • drill;
  • several bolts;
  • a nozzle that allows you to cut metal;
  • steel rod or profile tube.

Several manufacturing methods step by step

The easiest model to perform is a do-it-yourself single hearth from a wheel disk. The design is made of one wheel with a stand.

Action algorithm:

  1. Cut out the inner wall, making the wheel look like a barrel.
  2. If there are holes in the workpiece, close them. Take the washers, close the holes with them and weld them.
  3. Close the seam, but do not forget to leave holes through which the coals will be blown.
  4. Weld 4 legs to the bottom of the disc.
  5. Clean all seams, sand the cuts.
  6. Cut out a small window so you can watch the fire and clean the firebox.
  7. Weld handles so that the brazier can be moved from place to place.

How to make a double brazier from stamped discs with your own hands?

  1. Pick up two rims. Choose the size based on the dimensions of the cauldron - 15 or 13.
  2. Take one disc and mark a line around the circle where you will make the cut. Draw above the holes.
  3. Cut out the drawn circle with a welding machine. The cut off part can be used as a lid. It can also act as a stand for a cauldron.
  4. Prepare the welding machine. Take the second disk and weld a large hole in the center with a pre-prepared piece of metal.
  5. Install one disk on the second and weld them to each other.
  6. If the seam after welding turned out to be rough, it can be corrected with a Bulgarian saw. Grind and cut off any protruding irregularities.
  7. Draw the contours of the future door that will open the firebox. Cut it out along the marked line, leaving the fourth side.
  8. The doors need a hinge. It can be built with a single bolt. Take a bolt, cut off its top and find two nuts by size.
  9. Weld the first nut to the door, the second to the barbecue.
  10. Screw the bolt into the threads of one and the second nut. If you wish, you can make several loops.
  11. Make a door handle. Find any pretty piece of metal and weld it on.
  12. Also, do not forget to make handles for the entire structure to facilitate its transportation and movement.
  13. To make the smoke leave the firebox evenly, make several even holes along the diameter of the structure.

Legs for barbecue

Prepare the legs for the structure to make it stable. If you are making a brazier for a summer residence, then simply weld them to the product. But if you need a collapsible mechanism, then the stand can be made removable.

  1. Prepare several sections of the profile, which will become the grooves for the legs (3 or 4). They must be larger. Weld them to the main structure at equal distances from each other. The angle of inclination must be the same.
  2. Cut several equal legs from a metal rectangular profile.
  3. Check how the segments are inserted into the grooves. If they are difficult to insert, sharpen the edges with a Bulgarian saw, and then hammer into the mounts with a hammer. The stove under the cauldron with your own hands is ready.

How to weld legs from car disks to the barbecue

Attention! The best length for legs is 45-50 cm.

Another variation of a homemade oven is smokehouse. To assemble the structure, you will need two wheels. How to make a stove from rims?

Action algorithm:

  1. Attach two bases to each other.
  2. Do not cut the center piece from the top wheel. It will act as a lid, contain the smoke, and become an exhaust system. This is a ready-made stand for a cauldron made of car rims.
  3. Cut the base out of the lower disc and weld the two pieces together to make them one piece.
  4. Attach the legs by welding.
  5. Mark the door in the center of the brazier and cut it out. Make a loop in the same way as described above.

Barbecue decoration

To make the product look nice, it needs to be painted. Get rid of old paint by firing the entire structure. Clean off the remaining coating with sandpaper or sandpaper. Next, take heat-resistant paint and paint the brazier in any color. Black looks the best.

When doing work, observe safety precautions. Do not neglect protective equipment: goggles, mask, special gloves. When doing work with a Bulgarian saw, guide the blade, forming a right angle with the object. If this rule is not observed, fragments may break off from the disc and injure you.
