How to make a round arch from wood. Wooden arches and portals

The arch is a popular type of decoration, since antiquity it has been used to decorate openings, arbors and paths in the garden. Inside the premises, the arches visually expand the space, make the rooms more spacious and brighter. This element gives the interior a uniqueness, it allows you to hide the shortcomings of the home, divide it into several zones. The curved vault of arched structures can withstand significant loads.

Decorative arches largely determined the appearance of the buildings of Ancient Rome, medieval buildings in Europe and masterpieces of ancient Russian architecture. In a word, they have been used literally in every historical period.

Wooden arches can be made to order, but they are easy to make with your own hands. You will get no worse than in the photo below. Next, we will look at this process in detail.

Training

The first step is to decide on the material from which the structure will be made. Interior arches are most often made of oak, ash, pine, larch, mahogany and other species. Each of the materials has its own characteristics.

The main advantages of pine are its shades (from pink to dark red). It is a strong but rather elastic material. Pine blanks have an affordable price, this type of wood is resistant to decay.

Oak and beech are the most durable materials. They are suitable for rooms with high humidity, although they can be used anywhere if the finish has something similar in texture and style.

Mahogany looks sophisticated and expensive, due to the high price it is rarely used in residential buildings. With a modest budget, an arch in a wooden house can be made of chipboard.

Having decided on the material, you need to choose the size and shape of the decoration. It entirely depends on the type of furniture and the design of the room or hall.

Designers distinguish the following forms of decorative arches:

  • classical (semicircle or arc);
  • "modern" (a vault flattened on top);
  • ellipse;
  • trapezium (construction of straight boards with sewn corners).

There are also exclusive solutions - "portals", "transoms" and so on. Each of these forms has its own nuances of use.

The classic version (see photo) will suit almost any room. These are ideal arches for doorways with a height of 2.5 m or more. "Modern" - a vault in the shape of a regular oval, on the contrary, is installed in wide places.

The ellipse is ideal for low height doorways, while the trapezoid is almost universal (it is the simplest form in terms of production).

Wooden arches allow you to decorate them with additional elements: side shelves and various decorative elements - candlesticks, pendants, lamps and so on.

Manufacturing

Structurally, a wooden arch consists of a set of small parts - bars, which are sawn in an arc. The length of the blanks can vary between 40-80 cm. The longer the curved beam, the wider it should be.

Production consists of three simple steps: creating a drawing and cutting out a template, cutting beams and assembling, and finishing.

For work, you will need the following tools and materials:

  • planed boards of equal thickness (about 4 cm);
  • compass
  • level;
  • pencil;
  • screwdriver and screws;
  • drywall;
  • roulette;
  • perforator;
  • jigsaw;

Step one: create the vault of the arch

We will make an interior wooden arch from a pine board. First, we calibrate the material using a thicknessing machine. Next, we will cut the board into strips 3 cm thick, which we will also run through the thickness. After that, we will cut the finished planks into the required number of bars (their size will be equal to the width of the opening).

Let's draw an arched vault using a large compass (you can use two large slats and a nail instead), its radius should be 1-2 cm less than the radius of the opening. If this is your first time making an arch on your own, you should choose the most gentle bend. The steeper the arc, the more difficult it is to create the desired design. When developing a drawing, it should also be taken into account that the distance from the top edge of the decoration to the ceiling cannot be less than 30 cm. Based on the drawing, a plasterboard template is made.

Lubricate the sides of each bar with glue and lay them out along the radius of the template (the bars must be joined, they can be pre-numbered to simplify work). This preparation should be left for one day. When the glue is dry, remove the arch from the template and reinforce the back side with glue and fabric. This will give our product extra strength. The front side must be processed with a grinder, after placing it back into the template.

Step two: we make an arched casing and side racks

Cut the board into small pieces. Lay them out so that they match the radius of the arch, then connect them together with glue and leave to dry for one day. After that, the glued casing can be sanded, its front side should be processed with a milling cutter.

For the manufacture of side racks, make a strapping with a hand mill. Create panels, insert them into the harness and glue well. Then it remains only to fix the vertical trim on the rack and glue the outline of the three finished parts.

Step three: final processing and assembly of the arch

Ready-to-assemble parts of the structure must be re-passed with a grinding machine. This will hide the joints to create the illusion of a solid arch. After sanding, the parts can be coated with paint or varnish. When the coating dries, you can begin the installation of our product in the opening. First, the arched part is installed, then the side racks are mounted, and a stroke is installed at the joints between them.

How to make an arch with your own hands? This question worries many who dared to make the design of the interior opening on their own.

A do-it-yourself door arch made with your own hands will make you proud of yourself, thereby allowing you to bring something original and unique into the interior of a room or bedroom. Despite the fact that many beginners are tormented by vague doubts, in fact there is nothing terrible in this work, the main thing is desire. If you have one, our detailed work plan will help you!

What is an arch and its varieties

The arch is an ancient architectural element, which is increasingly used as an internal decorative element of an entrance or interior door, or rather a doorway. The arch is a universal opening in the wall, which is able to give "volume" to a small room, and at the same time, zone an apartment of a small square.

Taking into account the wishes of the owners of the home, thanks to the arches, designers can turn different ideas into reality, giving the doorway a different look. Today, modern materials allow arches to be given various geometric shapes, as well as to form intricate vaults. Most often, for the manufacture of arches and their cladding, they use:

  • Brick.
  • Wooden bar.
  • plywood.
  • Tiles.
  • GKL, etc.

The structure of the arch is a support for partitions and walls. But, since the doorways in high-rise buildings are not load-bearing, the only requirement that is put forward for them is to withstand their own weight (with finishing finishing material). If the wall is load-bearing, the material must be selected according to external loads.

Any version of the arch, which is mounted instead of a door, performs an exclusively decorative function. The frame of the structure can even be made of a light profile for fiberboard or chipboard, and a wooden beam can also be used. The only important point is the reliable fixation of the partition so that the decor does not fall off and deform after a few days.

As we noted, the design of the house can be beautifully supplemented with an arch, because there is a huge variety of its forms. They can be made in a classic or romantic style. Modern is also often used. No less popular is the elliptical shape, trapezoid, "portal" and many others.

The first example is made as a regular semi-arch, in the form of a semicircle. In the last photo you can see a square interior opening, called the "portal". This design method is performed with strict observance of rectangular outlines. All other samples are intermediate variations between the two basic forms.

But, these are not all options. You can also experiment with side supports, use curved posts, etc. You can finish the shape and decorate it in different styles, the main thing is that the passage harmoniously fits into the home interior. In some apartments, the classics and a round, correctly bent vault look great, in others - portals, it all depends on the taste preferences of the owners. Pay attention to the advice of experienced finishers:

  1. Classic arches are best done in apartments with high ceilings, at least 3 m.
  2. In panel-type high-rise buildings, it is better to frame the doorway in modern style.
  3. It is preferable to decorate wide doorways from the corridor to the hall in a romantic style, for which wide racks are selected.
  4. The finishing of the “portal” opening goes well with the interior of the room, which uses clear lines. "Portal" is ideal for houses that are made of clapboard, logs or timber. This combination is very elegant and harmonious.

What materials can be used to form arches?

To make an arched vault, you need to stock up on the following material:

  • Drywall sheets.
  • Plywood.

It is worth noting that it is best to sheathe the frame with drywall sheets, because in the future it can be decorated with various decorative materials. But, if you need to create a more sophisticated shape, choose plywood sheets, as it bends better. The preparation of the arched frame is formed from:

  • Metal profile.
  • Wood beams.

But, for the construction of the arch, you can also take concrete, aerated concrete and brick, which are decorated with a finishing material. Despite the fact that such structures are solid, it is forbidden to build them in high-rise buildings due to their large weight. It is also forbidden to make a metal door frame, which, moreover, will cost a pretty penny. And how to make an arch in an apartment with your own hands from metal? After all, this is a very laborious process that requires the use of specialized devices. That is why drywall is the most acceptable material for finishing apartments.

How to make an arch out of wood?

Do-it-yourself wooden arch, or rather a wooden frame, is formed without much effort. But, in addition to wood blocks, sheets of plywood will also come in handy. The first thing to do is to measure the width of the passage, subtract the thickness of the materials, after which we get the optimal thickness of the wooden beams. Then an arc is drawn on plywood, which is cut out with a jigsaw.

Subsequent installation is carried out with self-tapping screws (5 cm), which fix the bars to plywood. The arch in the doorway is also fixed with self-tapping screws, which are screwed in at a distance of 15cm. The final stage is the fixation of the 2nd plywood wall and its subsequent sheathing with drywall sheets. Note that you need to fix drywall sheets with special self-tapping screws for working on drywall.

We mount an arch from plywood

How to make an arch with your own hands from wood without using natural material? Today it is not difficult, because the tree can be replaced with plywood. In order to correctly calculate the amount of materials needed, including fittings, the first thing experienced finishers do is create a sketch.

To work with plywood, you will need such a handy tool:

  • Jigsaw (or hacksaw).
  • Drill.
  • Screwdriver.
  • Sandpaper.
  • Finishing accessories.

Since plywood is a fairly unique material that allows you to create original and unusual shapes, you need to work with it, following the step-by-step instructions:

  1. Measure the doorway and note how big the arch will be.
  2. Then you need to cut the strip and carefully process it.
  3. The resulting strip is slightly moistened and left for a while.
  4. After the manipulations done, the plywood will be pliable and will easily take the necessary shape.
  5. The prepared bar is bent in the right way and immediately inserted into the required doorway, carefully fixed and spacers are installed in the corners.

Formation of an arch from plywood. After the canvas is installed, you need to wait a bit until the sheet is completely dry and takes its final form. At the next stage, you can act in two scenarios:

  • Form inserts from wooden bars and sew up the surface with drywall.
  • Use mounting foam, filling voids with it.

Plasterboard arch installation

Working with drywall, like with plywood, is very similar and does not cause difficulties, but it is cheap. If you have the opportunity to build walls and form an arch at the same time, this way you can finish the job as quickly as possible. Before forming an arch, you need to gradually prepare the surface, namely:

  • Dismantle the old door panel, decorative trims, platbands and other fittings.
  • Close up all the damage on the walls to avoid trouble in the future.
  • Get tools.
  • Draw up a detailed work plan and sketch.

You can install a drywall arch in different ways, then we will describe each method in more detail. The first option is the most popular:

  • Take 2 sheets of drywall, one of which is cut in half.
  • A U-shaped frame is formed in the doors using a metal profile.

  • One segment is fixed on the frame, having previously marked it into 2 equal parts and marking the center.
  • A hole is drilled in the rail from the edge and in the center. The distance between them should be equal to the middle of the arc of the formed arch. To do this, determine what distance will be observed between the edges of the semicircle.
  • Then a curved line is applied, with the help of which the hole in the middle of the rail is connected to the center of the segment of the drywall sheet, which is fixed on the frame. Immediately it is worth checking whether the height of such an opening is suitable.
  • Then the sheet is removed and the excess is cut off, after which it is again fixed to the frame.
  • The second sheet of drywall is installed on the opposite side. Taking the corner and the first segment (like a stencil), transfer the dimensions of the arc. Next, cutting the arc and fixing it is repeated in the same way.
  • After the work done, a void is obtained in which the frame is mounted. To do this, the profile is cut and bent. The resulting structure is fixed to the racks and drywall. It is also worth installing jumpers for reliability and structural strength.

  • Next, the necessary strip is cut out, bent, and deep cuts are made from the inside. It is necessary to fix without haste, with gentle movements.
  • That's it, the arch is formed. The only thing left to do is to paste over the wallpaper or paint it in the desired colors.

The second way is much more difficult. The masonry is formed using the following technology:

  • Pieces of drywall are fixed from the corners on both sides with a mixture of PVA glue and water.
  • Drywall is cut so that each next fragment is smaller than the previous one.
  • Work continues until the smallest fragment is installed.
  • Self-tapping screws or anchors are used as additional fixation.

This is just a preparatory process. Further it will be even more difficult. The next step will require plaster and putty. Large expansions and other defects are sealed with plaster, and a smooth arc is created with a putty mortar. This is a rather painstaking work that requires a firm and experienced hand of the master, so it is better for a beginner to immediately purchase template blanks.

Step-by-step instruction

If you decide to install the arch in the hallway, in the kitchen or on the balcony, follow the recommendations below:

  • Dismantle the old door and platbands.
  • Expand the doorway to the desired size.
  • Trim the walls and close up any defects.
  • If the design is backlit, run the wiring.
  • Take all measurements in different places to minimize errors.
  • For uneven walls, choose the depth of the arch in the thickest place.
  • Do not be too lazy to make a life-size sketch (this will allow not only to install the arch as accurately as possible, but also to pre-evaluate how the arch will look like).
  • You need to start work on installing the supporting frame in the following sequence:
  • Along the perimeter of the doorway, create the main contour from the profile and fix it on the wall.
  • Fix the frame system.

  • Set the vertical guides indented from the plane of the interior surface by the thickness of the drywall and add 2 mm to the data (the margin is made for plaster).
  • The plaster surface must be rolled out to maximum evenness.
  • To create a semicircle from the profile, cuts are made on it in increments of 5-7 cm.
  • When an ideal curve is formed from the profile, it is installed in the right place and fixed to the frame.
  • For greater strength, the arc must be fixed with several hangers to the horizontal upper guide.
  • Then install the crossbars in increments of 40-60cm.
  • The result should be a structure of metal profiles in the form of an arch for further plating.

Finishing

When the arched frame is ready and sheathed, finishing work can begin. To do this, you need to glue the edges and joints of materials with specialized paper tape or fiberglass mesh. You will also need to apply putty, at least 3 layers, and sand the structure. After you are convinced of the reliability of the formed structure, you can proceed by following some of the recommendations below.

To do all the finishing work, you need to purchase acrylic putty, which is designed for interior work. But, mind you, it is better to act with a special mass for drywall. Before use, the putty mass is thoroughly stirred until smooth.

When starting work, put on gloves and other personal protective equipment! The putty is applied in linear motion with a rectangular spatula. In addition to filling all the irregularities and joints of materials with putty, it must also be applied to the caps of self-tapping screws so that their edging does not show through. Similar actions are carried out until the surface becomes perfect.

After puttying, you can start gluing the joint and edges to remove all kinds of irregularities and give the material strength. To do this, you can take a fiberglass mesh or paper tape, it all depends on your preference (both options are good). Cut off a fragment of the grid and place it on the joint (in the very center), pressing it with your fingers into the still not dried putty. Check that the tape is securely fixed and that there are no wrinkles.

After all the joints are processed with a mesh, you can cover the curved parts of the arch with it. You need to do the work in a similar way. When the mesh forms folds during the processing of arcuate sections, they can be leveled by cutting the canvas with a sharp knife.

After drying, the putty will become snow-white. This will be a signal that you need to take sandpaper and go smooth the surface. But, work carefully, do not remove too much putty so as not to expose the mesh. For this work, use a respirator, because during the grinding of the surface there will be a lot of dust, which is very harmful to human lungs.

When all 3 layers of putty are applied and the surface is cleaned, you need to wait about 12 hours for the structure to dry completely. Work again with fine grit sandpaper to achieve a perfect surface. That's all, you can decorate the surface.

Arch decoration

It doesn’t matter at all what material you used to install the arch, because even a do-it-yourself brick arch needs final decoration. To decorate the door arched vault, you can use the following techniques:

  • Painting to match the walls.
  • Sheathing with wood blocks (as an option, laminate, siding, etc. are often used for this).
  • Wallpapering.
  • Use artificial stone based on gypsum.
  • Decorate the structure with mirrors or mosaics (for mosaics, you can use small pebbles, corks, glass, etc.).
  • Use foam molding or surface painting.

Important! Try not to overdo it, so as not to clutter up the passage and mix incongruous. It is worth noting that sometimes ordinary painting is enough to give elegance.

As you can see, there are a lot of options for finishing decoration, for which you can use not only natural materials. It all depends on the idea of the designer and the wishes of the owners, as well as the general style of the room. The classic additional interior can be supplemented with stucco molding, fabrics, so that everything harmoniously blends together. The decoration of the columns looks no less concise if clinker is glued on them.

Ready-made arched kits

If you are not confident in your own abilities, and the training video lessons from the Internet are not entirely clear to you, you can make your life much easier by buying a ready-made kit for forming an arch. Such kits can be made of different materials, have a different design, color, design and texture, which will allow each person to find the most suitable option. The most suitable option is a set of fiberboard or MDF. Such materials are very similar to wood, but are less difficult to process and install. The ready-made standard set of interior arches is included.

The arch has always been considered one of the most beautiful elements of the decor of a room or a personal plot. It brings a certain fabulousness and elegance to the design composition, adds volume to the room by smoothing the corners. An arched opening can serve as an excellent alternative to a doorway, however, in some cases it is added with an arched door. Recently, wooden arches have become especially popular, photos of which can be found in our article. They are a great addition to any element of the interior, and natural wood gives the room sophistication.

Basic moments

Making a wooden arch at home is a rather complicated matter and requires special tools and skills. Below we will take a closer look at how to make a wooden arch with your own hands.

The first thing to learn is what parts the arch consists of:

  1. Pilasters. Pilasters are box-shaped structures that have the shape of the letter P in cross section. This part of the arch imitates its supporting columns. Each pilaster consists of three main elements: a figured plinth, representing the lower part of the structure, a ledge-girdle, located in the middle of the structure, and a capital, which is the upper part.
  2. Arch. This detail is considered the foundation and is the arch of the entire structure.
  3. Archivolts. These are platbands that frame the design of the arch.

The order of work on the construction of the structure

The order of work is as follows:

  1. The calculation of the wooden arch, its dimensions and configuration is based on the width of the corridor. If it is large enough - about 2 meters, then it is advisable to make the vault in the form of a part of a circle, but if the width is less, then it is better to install an elliptical vault.
  2. Create a template. The first step in the manufacture of wooden arches is to make an arch arch template. As we have already said, it can be in the form of a part of a ring or an ellipse, depending on the width of the corridor. The template is made from a sheet of plywood with a thickness of at least 20 mm. To begin with, we draw two circles of the required diameter on the surface of the plywood sheet. The outer diameter of the resulting ring should be equal to the inner radius of the arch. A hole is drilled inside the ring, from which we begin to cut out the necessary ring with a jigsaw.
  3. Then we cut it in half and as a result we get two half rings. The ends of the half rings must be sanded. This is done on a milling table using a profiling cutter. From a piece of the same plywood we cut out stiffeners, the length of which is equal to the width of the half-rings, and the width is equal to the dimensions of the arched vault. We install stiffeners between the half rings, and fix them with self-tapping screws.
  4. The end of the mold is reinforced with thin sheet metal, plywood or fiberboard. It is better to take a piece of galvanized steel, it bends quite easily and will give the structure the necessary rigidity. We also fix it with self-tapping screws. It is worth noting that thanks to this template, you can make more than one arch.
  5. Then we begin to collect the set. For him, it is better to choose veneered plywood with a thickness of no more than 2.5 mm. It looks attractive and is not difficult to process. We take a segment with a width slightly larger than the dimensions of the form and with the help of clamps we fix it on it. Alternately grind both ends of the plywood.
  6. Next, we begin to cut out the archivolts. To do this, we collect them from small pieces of wood in the form of a polygon. Then a half ring is made from the polygon, which is glued to the arch blank. The same is done with the other archivolt. The whole structure is connected with clamps until the glue dries, then it is polished again.
  7. The internal joint of the archivolt and the vault of the interior wooden arch is milled.
  8. The next step is the manufacture of pilasters. They are made U-shaped from several prefabricated parts in order to separate them with decorative elements. The glued rack is cut in half, milled and cut grooves. Then the arch is assembled completely and covered with several layers of varnish.

As we can see, to make such a design with your own hands, you need too many specific tools, which is not entirely advisable to buy for one arch.

The next method of making a wooden arch in an apartment with your own hands is a little more complicated, however, it does not require a lot of tools. Its essence lies in a set of a set of several elements. To do this, a template is drawn on a piece of plywood. Then, from the boards calibrated on the thickness gauge, several small bars are cut along an arc, which are then glued together into one structure and fixed with self-tapping screws. Self-tapping screws must be drowned. The bars are marked according to the template. Particular attention must be paid to the lower arc of the bar. The bars are laid with an overlap (like brickwork). After that, all the irregularities are polished. Then pilasters are made. For this arch, you can use simple racks of a wooden door frame. Thus, the structure can be used as a wooden arch for doorways. The last step will be the manufacture of platbands and varnishing the surface.

As we can see, building a wooden arch with your own hands is not an easy task, and in order to translate what was conceived into reality, you must have at least a simple carpentry tool and basic woodworking skills.

How to make a wooden arch for the garden with your own hands

The fashion for decorating a personal plot with wooden arches came to us relatively recently, however, in a short period of time it won the hearts of the owners of country houses and summer cottages. As a rule, arches in our houses were used only as a support for climbing plants, mainly for grapes. They were made of metal, and they did not carry any architectural value. Over time, wooden arches began to be used as an element of landscape design, decorating the paths on the site with them. Rose flowers, ornamental beans and other interesting plants are usually let through such designs. Naturally, in the manufacture of an arch for a garden, such accuracy is not required as for the interior of an apartment or house, so it is much easier to make it.

  • A simple arch made from improvised materials. For the manufacture of such a structure, we will use waste from sawing trees. For the racks of such an arch, we take four thick branches. Saw them to the same length. Next, we dig small holes in the ground, insert racks into them, level them and fill them with concrete. The part of the rack that will be in the ground is lubricated with mastic or wrapped with roofing material. After the concrete hardens, we tie the arch racks with crossbars. To do this, we cut out 6 small segments of branches and nail them across the racks. The next step is to connect the opposite racks with crossbars. Next, install the roof of the arch. To do this, we place the rafter beams and connect them in the middle at an angle. We do the same with the other pair of racks. We connect the rafter beams to each other. Then we strengthen all structural elements with braces. Such a simple and cheap arch will fit perfectly into the design of your site.

  • Construction of timber and boards. Also not a particularly difficult option. From a bar 150x150 mm we make 4 racks, the upper ends of which we saw down at an angle of 45⁰. The supports are installed in the ground (do not forget to treat them with mastic before installation), leveled and poured with concrete. Then rafters are made for the roof of the arch. For this, the same beam is taken, the end of which, at the junction with the opposite one, is sawn at an angle of 45⁰. The next pair of racks are connected by a vault in the same way. As a result, we have two pairs of supports connected by vaults. Now we connect them with braces. As braces we use strips 50 mm wide and 20 mm thick. They will not be installed at a right angle, but at an angle of 45⁰. To do this, we file the ends so that they coincide with the end of the rack. We install braces on both sides of the racks, and in different directions. So the whole structure is sheathed. The result is a rather interesting arc. The final chord will be painting the structure in white.

  • Plank and metal construction. In such an arch, a square pipe will be used as racks. Pipe sections are treated with anticorrosive, installed in the ground, leveled and poured with concrete. Then we weld parts of the arch to the racks. For their manufacture, we take a smaller square pipe and bend it on the rollers. If this is not possible, you can contact any locksmith shop. The resulting design is painted black. We connect the racks and vaults with wooden braces at a right angle. Before installation, the braces are varnished. Through holes are drilled in the posts and vaults, and wooden planks are mounted on bolts.

Quite often, shelves are installed on the racks of wooden arches, on which it will be possible to put flowers in the wagons in the spring. True, then the design should be reinforced for the additional weight of flowerpots.

Caring for a wooden arch

If the arch is installed indoors, then caring for it does not require effort. As a rule, the layer of varnish that is applied to the tree will allow it to have an attractive appearance for quite a long time. Another thing is the arch in the garden. To protect it from the influence of precipitation or pests, it is necessary to use special antiseptic compounds, as well as paints for outdoor work. It is necessary to paint wood at least once every two years, and preferably annually. Before painting, it is necessary to clean the old coating layer. This can be done with a spatula or medium grit sandpaper. After stripping, the wood can be covered with a layer of drying oil.

An opening between rooms does not always imply a door. Very often, modern design provides for the creation in this place of a structure of the original form - an arch. It allows you to decorate this space stylishly, beautifully and functionally. The arch can not only be an element of the interior, it can visually enlarge the space. At the same time, she can effectively zoning the room.

There are many options for how you can create an attractive interior arch. The use of drywall construction is very popular, but nothing compares to the manufacture of a wooden structure. It looks natural, but is used more practically.

Therefore, we will figure out how such a design can be made by hand, for which we use photo and video materials.

Kinds

It should be understood that, despite the classic arches that are built up to the ceiling, interior doors are not much different in size from ordinary openings. And therefore, two groups of structures can be distinguished: which require the destruction of walls and which do not require such an action. The first look like an arc, they are integrated into the existing opening space.

The second ones look like a vault, but according to the characteristics it is an ordinary rectangle. This approach requires less effort than in the first case, however, the portal uses less space in the upper part.

It should be noted that the modern market makes it possible to purchase a finished product, which can then be inserted into the doorway, as shown in the photo. It can even be carved wooden arches. Such a solution will look harmonious with wood trim, for example.

The sizes that can be found are 90x210 and 120x210 mm. There may be other options, especially if they are made to order.

The structure is fastened either with glue, or with the need to make holes for fixing with screws. Then they are sealed with putty or covered with decorative plugs. In this case, the structure can be a single piece, arches made of solid wood, or it can consist of parts that are assembled into a single structure.

Manufacturing

Making arches from wood is a difficult process that requires attention and some effort. And for starters, it is recommended to decide what the form will be. You can choose from a photo. The demanded option is a classic, in which the radius is determined by half the width of the volume. Such a solution cannot be called effective with low ceilings, for these cases it is recommended to use a modern arch. If you reduce the solution to a minimum, then you can implement a portal - a rectangular arch made of solid wood, made in the form of the letter "P".

Training

To begin with, the interior opening needs to be prepared. To do this, the old door frame is removed, if it is still in place. Then the surface must be cleaned of everything that may interfere with further actions. After that, you can start measuring its dimensions.

  • tape measure and pencil;
  • level;

  • sharp knife;
  • wood saw;
  • screwdriver;
  • impact drill or hammer drill.

To make a structure with your own hands, it is recommended to use either a single piece made to order, or create it from several elements combined into a single composition.

Portal

If you want to create a portal, then this is the easiest solution to implement. You need to purchase a door frame, but not for installing a door, but with a completely flat front. Next, using a drill, you need to drill several holes around the perimeter for the possibility of fixing. It is necessary to mark these points on the opening, for which the structure is applied, marks are made. We drill holes through them using a drill with an impact mode or a puncher. It remains to insert the dowel. Then put the box back on and secure it with screws.

It remains only to decorate the box with platbands. They need to be color matched. We take measurements and cut the products at 45 degrees to join the elements. Basically, you need to cut two doorways to close the box on both sides.

Multi-element construction

It is more difficult when it is necessary to do a do-it-yourself installation of a structure that includes several elements. In this case, you will have to work hard not only on fixing them to the wall, but also on their joining, so that as a result a solid structure without defects is formed.

In this case, the shape of the tree-like arch can be, in fact, any. It is only important to harmoniously fit it into the existing doorway.

It is better to start the installation of a multi-component structure from above. In this case, it will be easier to adjust the dimensions so that the product fits into the opening. Further actions are similar to pinning the portal. Only in this case we get one inconsistency. The traditional doorway has a rectangular shape, and the classic arch has the shape of an arc. If they are joined, we will get two triangular holes. Therefore, you will have to take care to close them beautifully, imperceptibly. Wood, chipboard, MDF and even drywall are suitable for this. The main thing then is to hide these elements under the general decoration of the room.

When assembling structural elements, it is recommended not to immediately tighten the screws so that the products can be adjusted to the desired position. And only when there is a perfect match with neighboring parts, you can finally fix it. This approach will avoid unpleasant inconsistencies.

Finishing

It remains to paint the arch, open it with varnish, or simply impregnate it with a special substance that will not change its color, but only protect it from external factors. In some cases, finishing the arches with wood allows you to achieve even more impressive results. This is especially true, for example, for the a la baroque style.

Whichever option is chosen for implementation, one thing is clear - solid wood door arches are a stylish, bright and presentable solution to a design idea. And if everything is implemented at the proper level, then harmony and the triumph of taste will triumph in the interior, and this is the best praise for good work.

The advantages of arched structures in the interior

One of the features of interior portals is their versatility. Such designs are great for any interiors. In a small apartment, they help save usable space and visually expand the space, filling it with light and air. In spacious mansions, they harmoniously complement the natural wood furnishings and serve as the finishing touch, emphasizing the discreet luxury of a classic interior.

As for the other advantages of wooden interior arches, these include:

  • Large selection of design solutions. Classic semicircular, with a truncated radius, in the modern style - you can list the various options for a very, very long time.
  • Effective appearance. The manufacture of arches from wood allows you to move away from the standards of typical building. Thanks to the use of such a design, the interior acquires individuality and its own style.
  • The ability to hide architectural defects. Despite the emergence of new technologies, the quality of housing construction often leaves much to be desired. In this case, the interior arch allows you to hide the curvature of the doorway, wall irregularities and other flaws.
