How to make the sheathing of beams on the ceiling with plasterboard sheets. How to beat the load-bearing beam in the interior How to hide the load-bearing beam on the ceiling

Premises with high ceilings require special skills from interior designers in the design of the ceiling. One of the options for such decor can be the presence of beams. Wooden beams under the ceiling are a stylish and modern solution in the interior, which has many advantages over other methods of ceiling installation. However, it is worth saying that the presence of beams is not always a tribute to fashion, it can also be an important structural element of the structure. At the same time, the type of such material, as a rule, does not differ in high decorativeness. In this connection, quite a few owners of private houses are wondering how to process a beam on the ceiling? To create a truly aesthetic design, it is worth approaching this topic thoroughly.

Ceiling beams in the interior

Beams on the ceiling are always unusual, luxurious and beautiful. Especially if you choose the right interior style and furniture. Of course, not in all residential buildings such products will be appropriate. It should be understood that in a typical apartment with a ceiling height of 2.5 m, such a design will only reduce the usable area and it will be extremely uncomfortable and not cozy to be in the room. Therefore, before deciding to use beams, it is worth evaluating the possibilities of existing real estate. In what cases would such decor be most appropriate?

You can use ceiling beams if you have:

  • apartment with an individual layout and a high ceiling;
  • a country house in which beams are a constructive part of the structure;
  • attic room;
  • a house or apartment decorated in styles such as country, rural, nautical, loft or shabby chic.

It is worth noting that this element of the interior can be used even in the bathroom. Of course, it is not recommended to install beams in an ordinary, small-sized plumbing room, but if you have a chic, spacious bathroom, the products will look quite luxurious, they will only require special processing. At the same time, the beams themselves can have a variety of designs. Indeed, even in a city apartment, you can use a similar ceiling design element if you paint it in a light tone. In rooms decorated in a marine style, untreated wood beams look great. Also, notes of harmony can be brought in if the ceiling is made of the same material as the furniture in the room. There are quite a few options to create your own unique interior, as well as the types of beams that you can use.

Types of beams

First of all, you should know that ceiling beams can be load-bearing or hemmed. The first option refers to the structural elements of the building, that is, they do not need to be mounted separately, they are laid in the process of building the building. They are necessary to perceive the load transmitted from another floor or roof of the house. As for decorative products, they are mounted after the completion of construction work, at the stage of finishing. Such products can close ugly seams between ceiling tiles, it is also convenient to place wiring in them, since, most often, false beams are hollow inside.

In addition to their functional purpose, beams are divided according to the material of production. Modern products are:

  • wooden;
  • metal;
  • polyurethane.

In this case, the bearing elements can only be made of durable wooden beams or solid metal. Each variety has its own advantages and certain disadvantages, therefore, before making a final decision on the use of certain products, it is worth familiarizing yourself with the features of the material in more detail.

Pros and cons of using beams

In the use of ceiling beams from various materials, there are both positive and negative points. What are the main features of these products?

Material Advantages disadvantages
Wood Environmentally friendly product, great for classic interiors. It is possible to give many variations of decoration. Appropriate in almost all rooms, including in the bedroom or in the nursery. The most expensive material that, without proper protection, can be destroyed by moisture or steam, as well as damaged by wood-boring insects, rodents, mold or fungi.
Metal Strong and durable products, ideal for modern styles such as hi-tech, industrial and even loft. High degree of fire resistance. For decorative beams, light aluminum alloy is usually used, making it easy and simple to mount products. Using metal subjected to rusting for the manufacture of beams, it is very important to carry out timely processing procedures, that is, to coat products with special anti-corrosion paint or other similar compounds. In addition, steel or iron products used as load-bearing elements are quite difficult to process on their own, this requires professional tools and special skills.
Polyurethane Modern material, easy to install. At the same time, its surface can be an imitation of materials such as stone, wood or metal. That is, users at an affordable cost can get almost any design they need. It is not required to process the product annually, since the manufacturer has already taken care of this by adding components that protect the product from moisture, temperature changes, UV radiation and other negative factors. Such a product cannot boast of resistance to open sources of fire. Also, the material is not very environmentally friendly. It should be borne in mind that the products can only be used as decorative false beams.

Most often, wooden elements are used to create a decor from beams, since such products can best emphasize the luxury of the interior and create an atmosphere of warmth and comfort. The only thing that users need to know before installing a wooden beam ceiling is how to process the beam on the ceiling correctly? After all, the aesthetics of the product and its long service life will depend on this.

Beam processing options

When using natural wood products under the ceiling, it should be borne in mind that their surface must be processed. In this case, we are talking about both protective methods and decorative ones.

Protection options include surface treatment with flame retardants, moisture-proof and antiseptic compounds. It can be confidently stated that the material treated in this way acquires high resistance to aggressive conditions, it is not afraid of exposure to moisture or hot steam, and is also not subject to rotting and mold formation. Processing can be done with a roller, brush or spray gun. You should follow the correct sequence of application of drugs, as well as choose only environmentally friendly products.

As for decorative processing, there are much more variations. The most popular are such methods as:

  • brushing;
  • aging with craquelure varnishes;
  • chemical processing;
  • application of oil or wax;
  • toning;
  • engraving;
  • staining.

To carry out such work, you need to stock up on tools and materials, and most importantly - patience. It is important to keep in mind that any work with wood is done only when the wood is well dried out. Indeed, when laying raw material, it is likely that during the drying process it will deform.

A ceiling with beams will give a feeling of comfort and tranquility, because powerful decorative elements are always associated with security. Of course, it is important to consider that the room is getting smaller, both in fact and visually, so you can use such decor only in rooms with large dimensions. Modern building materials and tools allow you to process beams in a wide variety of ways. However, only by choosing the right option in each case, you can create a harmonious interior, which will always be comfortable and warm.

› Repair Blog › Necessary

Those times are long gone, when beams on the ceiling were only in rural buildings. Also, it is worth emphasizing that today they do not only the role of a support for the roof, but also a decorative function. Just because of the latter, many people prefer to install decorative beams not only in suburban buildings, but also in city apartments. They will look unique and unusual, but only if they are correctly beaten. Just about how to beat the beams on the ceiling in an apartment and a dilapidated house, we will tell in this article.

decorative beams

In order to complement the interior, it is completely optional to redo the roof and start expensive repairs, it will be enough to purchase decorative beams and install them on the ceiling. In a specialized store, it is possible to find three types of beams:

  • wooden;
  • iron;
  • from polyurethane.

The classic option is wooden beams for the ceiling. They are made from ash, pine and oak. They can be solid or hollow inside, which will allow you to hide various communications.

Previously, beams were masked, but now designers include them in the interior of different rooms, where they fit organically. These can be:

  • kitchen;
  • living room;
  • bedroom;
  • cabinet;
  • corridor.

Another unique solution will be the zoning of the room. This is especially true for a studio apartment or a country house with huge rooms. It is enough to correctly position the beams on the ceiling. If, however, we look at the styles in which wooden decorative elements occupy a leading position, then it is possible to single out:

  • Scandinavian;
  • rustic;
  • country;
  • provence;
  • Mediterranean.

On the beams, it is also possible to fix lamps or chandeliers with chains.

Design Features

When planning an interior, you need to pay attention to all details, except for the smallest ones. When it comes to beams, there are a couple of options: to beat the entire surface or to decorate it partially, making strict designs. It is possible to lay beams in a variety of ways, along with this, relying on your taste and discretion, so you should not be limited by the rules.

There are a couple of actual ways to finish wood beams on the ceiling:

  1. Brushing. This technology will allow you to highlight the texture of wood. Masters also imitate traces of the bark beetle. As a result, the beams are transformed beyond recognition, and from the outside it will give the impression that the residents are in a dilapidated house that is more than 200 years old.
  2. Fire treatment. This is a technology of unnatural aging of wood. For this method, a blowtorch and special brushes are useful.
  3. Vintage style. To achieve that the ceiling with load-bearing beams looked like an old one, perhaps through special paints and varnishes.
  4. Ethnic style. It is necessary to include forged elements and twine in the interior.
  5. Classic style. A distinctive feature is simplicity, this is what allows you to create an atmosphere of comfort and warmth.

Some designs involve transitions from ceilings to walls. Along with this, the beams can give a refined European style to the room.

In a dilapidated house

Often in suburban buildings, which are used during the season (summer), the finish quickly becomes unusable and loses its attractive appearance. Especially quite often this happens in a wooden house, since the wood is exposed to liquid and dampness. In order to return the beams to a presentable appearance, it is possible:

  • dismantle dilapidated beams and install false beams made of polyurethane (this material imitates the texture of wood well);
  • decorate the structure with ropes, creating an interior in a marine style;
  • hide imperfections on the surface with paint or varnish;
  • in case of overly obvious shortcomings, putty and prime the surface, after which the paint should be applied;
  • not just paint the beams, but also paint them manually or using stencils.

In addition, there are a couple of recommendations regarding the style of the interior of the room. For example, high-tech style goes well with iron shades, originality will be added by wires that are not hidden, and simple light bulbs for lighting. If we talk about country style or Provence, then a whitewashed ceiling against the background of catchy beams will be most appropriate.

When painting beams, it is not necessary to give preference to natural (brown) and pastel shades. By choosing catchy colors, it is possible to take a catchy reprimand on the ceiling.

Cement beam masking

Now let's look at the main ways how it is possible to beat the beams on the ceiling in the house in various settings.

The option with the installation of LED strips is suitable for a modern style or for a child's room.

What if the cement beam cannot be disguised in any way? Under such conditions, it is necessary to carry out a suspended structure made of plasterboard or a stretch ceiling. From drywall it is possible to make a box in the shape of the letter "P". Fix such a box to be directed specifically to the ceiling and the adjacent wall. It is not recommended to drill into the beam, as it may lose its characteristics.

Moreover, if the concrete beam is located vertically, then this disadvantage can be turned into an advantage. For example, make a built-in wardrobe. This will completely hide the existing beam and in one moment there will be a large amount of storage space.

Full or partial masking

Often, the owners decide to completely hide the beams from view, but it is possible to close only the space between the beams by making the ceiling. In this case, the following types of ceilings and materials are used:

  • tension;
  • drywall;
  • coffered;
  • lining.

The most valuable and exquisite is the coffered ceiling. In addition to beams, this design provides for the creation of other elements, for example, cells, recesses and cornices. Any form of cassettes is possible:

  • polygon;
  • rhombus;
  • square.

By applying partial masking, it is possible to hide the flaws and imperfections on the ceiling and at the same time leave the beams in the interior of the room.

If your house has ceiling beams, then saving them from them will be the worst solution. Since it is possible to add a zest to the interior of the room with minimal financial and time costs, just by correctly beating the existing constructive zest.

  • Drywall practically does not change size under the influence of temperature deformations.

    "Game" can be a metal frame

  • Drywall painted in all colors
  • There are hidden engineering and communication networks in the hollow frame
  • Low price per square meter
  • Minimum Purity

Materials and tools

Before installation, preparatory measures are taken to select tools, fasteners and raw materials:

tool

  • Hit.

    It is selected taking into account the work under the ceiling. Machine weight - 5-7 kg

  • Screwdriver with cross sections for self-tapping screws
  • Measuring tape, pencil, building level
  • Angle grinder (in folklore - "Bulgarian") for cutting metal profiles
  • Spare discs for Bulgaria 10-12 mm thick

The required number of gypsum boards is determined by the movement of the beam. It is necessary to summarize the area of all customers and add 10% of the profit.

mounting

After preparation, the question arises of how to fix the beam on the top drywall in order to achieve the least errors and get the highest result.

The work of installing beams can also be done by a journalist. Drywall for these purposes is the ideal material. Easily sawed and attached to the base frame. The beam is straight, without bends. The main thing is to strictly follow the instructions, follow the recommendations of experts.

Beams should not be hidden, but decorated

Ceilings with beams, which are found in many old houses, especially wooden ones, create a certain atmosphere of warmth and comfort. Beams, released outside or even textured, are now used by designers to enliven the most banal interior. Interesting, but before they were called bastards. The existence of a svolok - the main beam supporting the ceiling in the mansions - is mentioned even in ancient Russian literature. Today, too, in many apartments and country houses, as well as in administrative buildings, you can see a ceiling beam or uterus, as it is called in the common people.

In addition to its unusualness, such a ceiling creates the right acoustics in the room, according to experts. Therefore, you should not find options in order to remove the beam from the ceiling, especially since today there are a huge number of options for its use in home design.

Ceiling beams - pluses

It has long been believed that the ceiling beams in the premises create a favorable environment for communication.

There are plenty of variations for their use in the interior. They depend both on the size of the room and on the imagination of designers. Beam decor can complement any style, from ultra-modern hi-tech to classic Victorian. You can hide the beam on the ceiling by hiding it, for example, under plasterboard or other material.

And you can think about how to decorate a beam on the ceiling - paint it to match the ceiling or give it a graphic shape.

Beams on the ceiling are part of building structures, floors between floors or an element of the truss system. They are usually made not full-bodied, with the exception of load-bearing or beams with a small section. And if in the Soviet years they were mandatory, but not too pleasant for the appearance of structural elements, today many designers are developing home decor based on them.

Decorative ceiling beams in the interior

In addition to the fact that the room is visually divided into functional zones, all communications can be carried out inside the beam channel. In addition, today the beam is often used to place lamps or chandelier pendants on it.

How to hide a beam on the ceiling

If all the above arguments leave indifferent the owners of houses with beams on the ceiling, and if they are sure that the beam is an extra attribute that does not bring any benefit, then they have no choice but to decorate the beams on the ceiling in any way so as not to see them anymore .

In principle, the way to hide the beams can be according to one principle, although the implementation can take place using a variety of materials - cardboard, drywall, it can be gypsum, wood, etc. We are talking about a false ceiling, which best allows you to hide everything that located under the floor panel.

It is known that the suspended ceiling is selected from the characteristics of each room. For example, in living rooms it is better to make a plasterboard ceiling. It is gypsum in combination with a high-quality type of cardboard that has unlimited possibilities for giving the premises warmth and comfort of a home.

For a bathroom and kitchen, a plasterboard ceiling is by no means the best decor: it is better to use materials that are less susceptible to aggressive factors than gypsum or cardboard. It is best to make plastic ceilings in the kitchen.

So, the first thing that comes to mind as an answer to the question of how to close the beam on the ceiling is the decor that turns the beams into part of the false ceiling.

In such situations, the beam is considered the central element, around which the rest of the ceiling structural elements are tied.

To begin with, a beam (or several) is sheathed with a box. Then a flat ceiling or elements of a complex drywall construction are attached to it. For docking, gypsum, cement or a special adhesive composition are used. Each beam on the ceiling gives you the opportunity to make your own unique false ceiling.

No less popular is the method when the owners try to hide the surface with the beam under the coffered ceiling.

By and large, the coffered ceiling is nothing more than a structure with beams located at right angles to each other. Often, such decor is either made of wood, or from the same drywall, or from polyurethane. The second option is most often used in the house, since this material is the cheapest. In principle, coffered ceiling cells do not have to be rectangular: a fairly common option is the decoration of diamond-shaped and even rounded structures.

How to decorate a beam on the ceiling

For those who become the happy owner of real estate that has beam structures and who wants to make them as invisible as possible, it is better to think not about how to hide them, but about how to decorate a beam on the ceiling and even how to decorate it.

The beams on the ceiling, it is quite likely, if they are correctly and successfully decorated, will emphasize all the advantages that the decor has. The existing beam is decorated with many materials, for example, edged boards, gypsum, concrete and even steel can be used.

The essence of this method is to make a box from a board, laminated chipboard, etc.

etc., and then install it on the ceiling surface as a decorative element. The specified decor is not acceptable only when the existing beam is already originally made of wood.

In such a situation, the owner will have no choice but to ennoble the ceiling beams. Moreover, this method is not only simple to perform, but also cheap.

You can decorate the beams by wrapping them with a rope.

However, such decoration of ceiling beams is not always possible to implement. It is an ideal solution only when there is free space between the ceiling surface and the beams, however small. Conversely, such decor is not suitable if there is no such space. The easiest way to finish a beamed ceiling in an old house is with beautifully installed lighting. Ditching the lone chandelier hanging in the middle of the ceiling in favor of lots of small recessed spotlights and pendant lights can create some truly amazing decor.

An equally beautiful decoration for beamed ceilings is LED and neon lights, which are very convenient to mount on beamed surfaces.

At the same time, lighting fixtures can be cut directly into the swag, or you can simply fix it on brackets. The latter method is extremely convenient in cases where it is necessary to allocate functional areas of the workspace or, for example, the kitchen in the house. In this case, the brackets can be rotated, changing the lighting, directing the light flux in different directions as needed.

Ceiling beam processing

For those who love classics or conservatism, experts recommend decorating your home, including ceilings in a classic style.

When choosing such a decor, the wooden beams of the ceiling can first be sanded, then coated with a stain or other impregnation that gives the wood a nobility of a dark shade. Such ceilings become a real decoration of interiors in many private houses. Today, in many glossy magazines you can see photos of classic interiors, proving that such ceilings look surprisingly dignified and, most importantly, solid.

A good idea to get a zest in the interior would be decorating a svolok, which can be done using hand-painted.

Such an interior will look very original, demonstrating the sophistication of the taste of the owner of the house. And the question of which motifs are best used in painting is purely individual. Everything here will depend on the imagination of the owner of the house, as well as on the theme of the main style that prevails in the interior design of the room.

For those who are going to finish the beam on their own, but are afraid that they will not be able to make a beautiful painting with their own hands, it is better to use stencils.

Today, the most unusual and bright stencils can be purchased at every store selling household goods. At the same time, experts recommend giving preference to a larger pattern, since a small ornament from below will simply not be visible.

If the beam structure is located in the kitchen or in the dining room of the house, then the following idea is suitable for finishing: rails and hooks can be fixed on the beam, on which kitchen utensils or dishes can be stored.

This is a great idea for a dining room or kitchen design. In this case, beam structures can play not so much an aesthetic as a practical role. In addition, bundles of herbs, garlic or dried vegetables can be attached to them, not only filling the kitchen with an amazing aroma, but also creating in it the unique atmosphere of a truly country house.

And by equipping a bar counter directly under the beam, you can combine business with pleasure. On the beam structure, you can also fix racks for wine glasses.

Summarizing

Few people know that there are many non-standard ways to solve the issue of how to disguise the beams on the ceiling.

One of the most common is the construction of a whole beam system, so that in this situation the existing beams harmoniously fit into the overall interior. In a word, there is only one idea - to fit a beam or beams into the interior in any way. And it is not at all necessary to hide them by sewing up the ceiling with plasterboard material or stretch fabric.

If you beat the beams in accordance with the general style of the room, then a bright and beautiful result will not keep you waiting.

Add a comment

Initially, the beams on the ceiling were not only a decorative element, but they took on the load from the roof, they were also a support for the attic floor.

Over time, they began to hide, but now they have become interesting again, but already as a decorative element, now they look different and perform other functions.

They decorate ceilings not only in villages, but also in country houses and city apartments.

They can be used everywhere, even if the house has wooden floors, their massiveness and number should depend on the size of the room, in large rooms there may be more of them.

This is a simple and inexpensive way to finish the ceiling, but they can handle many functions.

Making the attic space with such beams will bring harmony and order into the space. If you want to visually expand the room, then arrange them in width, and if you place them along a wide wall, then it will become more elongated.

If you do not want to change the geometry of the room, but simply add volume to your ceiling, then you can install them with a lattice or herringbone.

One large beam can divide a room into zones, it must be mounted at the junction of functional zones, and they will also help to separate a specific zone.

On the ceiling beam, you can fix recessed lights, LED lighting, and you can also tie a large chandelier to it.

They can be used to decorate niches in drywall constructions, they can also be used to create spot lighting. Hollow pseudo-beams will help to disguise communications running along the ceiling.

They can be used as boxes for mounting fixtures.

They are U-shaped, they are hollow inside, so they can hide the pipes. In the kitchen, you can install various holders and hooks on them and hang utensils, baskets, bunches of herbs or glass holders on them.

You can attach a TV panel to them, an air swing or chairs, but all this is possible if it is a real beam, and not an imitation. They can decorate the ceiling of almost any style.

How to hide the beams?

Many beams do not really like, and the question arises of how to hide them, often they have various defects and differences, this happens if the floors are in poor condition.

There are several options for hiding beams, you can mount stretch ceilings made of fabric or PVC, it needs to be lowered to the width of the masked beam, while the ceiling itself may go too low, it is better to make a multi-level ceiling, it will press the ceiling and add space.

To hide the beams, you can make a drywall box, it must have a U-shaped frame, it is attached to the ceiling itself, but not to the beam, there should not be any holes in it, as it will lose its properties. The beam should be 20 cm from frame and 2 centimeters from the ceiling.

There is also a more expensive and sophisticated way to finish the ceiling with beams, for this you can use caissons, the ceiling will consist of beams, cells, borders, reinforcements and cornices.

Cassettes can be square, rhombus or polygonal, and there can be round caissons.

On such a ceiling, you can decorate the longitudinal and transverse beams with the help of ornaments and light sources.

These beams will help to quickly mount the supporting lattice frame. Such ceilings will make the room more impressive.

How to beat the beams on the ceiling 2

The easiest way to hide the beams is using a clapboard or edged board.

All surfaces of wooden beams can be closed along one horizontal and two vertical planes.

Boards need to be painted and sanded, the material can be burned with a blowtorch and coated with clear varnish. Now such beams and boards are not polished, but made uneven using round wire brushes.

The shank of the tool is inserted into an electric drill and put risks on the surface of the beam.

As you can see, in general, hiding the beams on the ceiling is not so difficult and can be done in several ways.

It all depends on the desire, you can hide these beams, or you can decorate them beautifully so that they decorate your rooms.

If you visit the construction forum on our website, you will find a lot of information there on this issue.

The main thing is not to do this work yourself if you do not have the proper building experience, since this is not such an easy job, it is better to hire a professional specialist for it.

It is also important to know the methods of repairing such beams in advance, since over time, they become less stable, but this work is already easier, however, it still requires a lot of effort and time, so this is another issue that needs to be resolved before doing it. ceiling with beams.

Overview How to hide beams on the ceiling.

Plasterboard ceiling: single level

In this lesson, we will learn how to assemble the simplest single-level plasterboard ceiling with our own hands. In another way, it is often called a suspended ceiling. In it, we will consider in detail: the advantages and disadvantages of drywall, what is needed for its installation, marking the ceiling, the procedure for installing the frame and its cladding, how and how to seal the joints of the GK-sheets, as well as how to avoid cracks.

The advantages of drywall over plaster in the case of ceilings

  • Drywall allows you to level surfaces of any curvature, while the maximum layer of plaster on the ceilings cannot exceed 15 mm
  • The Civil Code allows you to easily hide (or at least disguise) the existing communications and structures: wires, pipes, beams ...
  • Plasterboard ceiling allows you to realize almost any of your fantasies in terms of lighting device
  • Design: countless shapes, two, three levels, niches for lighting ...
  • Relative lightness of construction
  • The ability to use heat and sound insulation (if your upstairs neighbors listen to death-metal at night, this is very important)
  • No "wet" processes during installation - no need to wait several days for the surface to dry

Disadvantages of drywall:

  • A significant reduction in the height of the room (depending on the curvature of the original ceiling and the possible need for recessed fixtures), at least 5 cm
  • The relative complexity of installation and the need for tools such as a hammer drill and a screwdriver (read how to choose a screwdriver here)
  • The potential for cracks at the joints of sheets in the future (we will analyze how to avoid this)
  • The need for the help of a partner

Of course, stretch ceilings “tear” plasterboard ceilings on most points, but you won’t be able to pull them with your own hands.

And anyway, I would do stretch at home, definitely.

Knowing all the pros and cons of drywall, it is impossible to unequivocally recommend it or not recommend it. Everything follows from the analysis of a particular room, but, in most cases, its use is preferable.

In this lesson, we will look at the most common way to install a false ceiling with your own hands - in one level on direct suspensions.

Tools and accessories

Necessary accessories for plasterboard ceiling installation:

  1. Guide profiles PN 28x27 mm
  2. Ceiling profiles PP 60×27 mm
  3. Sealing tape
  4. Anchor wedges
  5. “Dowel-nails” (ordinary dowels and self-tapping screws will not work, since the holes in the profiles are larger than the self-tapping screws - 8 mm, and even more fuss with them)
  6. Cord breaking device
  7. Hydraulic level / laser plane builder
  8. Bubble building level 2 m
  9. Rule aluminum 2.5 m
  10. Drywall sheets
  11. Putty for seams GK (Uniflot)
  12. Reinforcing tape for seams (serpyanka)
  13. Roulette
  14. Hammer
  15. Stationery knife (or spec.

    knife for cutting GK)

  16. Perforator + drill
  17. screwdriver
  18. Self-tapping screws for metal 25-35 mm (black, frequent pitch)
  19. Self-tapping screws with a press washer
  20. acrylic primer
  21. Direct hangers
  22. Single-level connectors CRAB
  23. Metal shears
  24. Heat and sound insulation materials (if required)
  25. Profile extensions (if required)
  26. Spatula set (narrow, wide and for corners)
  27. Hydrogen peroxide and bandages (a joke, but it would be nice to have just in case)))

In the picture, all accessories follow in order:

Here it should be noted right away - much of what is now sold in hardware stores under the guise of profiles and suspensions is complete squalor, just foil. I opted for Knauf products (and drywall I use their production), and I advise you not to risk and save on this.

You can recognize their profiles and sheets by the corresponding stamp.

A few words about the hydraulic level. It consists of two small flasks with water connected by a thin tube. The principle of its operation is based on the law of physics about communicating vessels, which makes horizontal marking with its help extremely accurate. When installing the ceiling, you can’t do without it (unless, of course, you have a laser level), because marking the entire perimeter of a room with a bubble level is not a quick or easy task.

Especially:

With the hydraulic level, we will only need to put marks on the corners, and then connect them by applying a “beat” (this is the simple name of a cord breaker)

There are many types of drywall sheets.

You and I need to know only two: ordinary and moisture resistant. Ordinary, because it is ordinary, because it is ordinary, and moisture resistant is used in rooms with high humidity, i.e.

in kitchens and bathrooms, due to reduced moisture absorption achieved through the use of hydrophobic additives in gypsum. To distinguish these two species from each other is very simple - by color. Ordinary drywall has the color of plain cardboard - gray. Moisture resistant sheets have a greenish color.

For ceilings, sheets with a thickness of 9.5 mm are most often used.

Some argue that it is more reliable to take 12.5 mm, they say, there is less chance that it will sag. But, in my opinion, there are more chances, since the weight of the sheet is greater.

Now about the sealing tape. It is self-adhesive, made of porous polymer material, width - from 30 mm. It is necessary for tight mating of frame elements with supporting structures, it also improves the acoustic properties of our ceiling.

Other than that, I'm of the opinion that it plays a small role in crack protection by allowing the structure to expand/contract a bit. But this is just an opinion. However, the use of sealing tape cannot be neglected!

Marking, mounting guides

In order to make the description of the process clearer, let's move to a virtual room, already familiar to us from the lesson "Plastering the Walls".

The walls, just there, are already plastered, and it is time to install the plasterboard ceiling. We will assume that the necessary communications have already been laid on it.

First we need to determine the lowest corner of the room.

We take a tape measure and measure the distance from the floor to the ceiling in each corner, it is also desirable to do this in the center of the room, just in case, you never know the ceiling is sagging. We found the lowest corner, retreated 5 cm (if recessed fixtures are not planned) or 8 cm (if planned), put a mark. From this mark, using the hydraulic level, set aside the horizontal to all other corners.

Now it remains to connect our labels with a spacer.

How to beat the beams on the ceiling: interesting ideas

Together with an assistant, pull the cord properly between the marks on one wall, pull it with your free hand and release it sharply. The cord, hitting the wall, will color it, and here is the finished horizontal line. We do the same for all walls. Here's what we get:

It's time to fix the guide profiles on the walls.

To do this, first attach one of them to the wall along the line (bottom along the line) and mark future holes with a marker along the finished holes (if the holes on the profile are located far from the edge, you need to make additional holes with a puncher, stepping back from the edges by 5-10 cm), then put it aside for now. We drill holes in the marked places.

Again we take the profile and stick a sealing tape on it, after which we again apply it to the line and fix the dowel-nails to the wall.

There must be at least three attachment points per profile. Here's what happens in the end:

Let's decide which profiles to call. I will call the main profiles those profiles that are attached to the base with suspensions, and the supporting profiles - those that are attached only to the main ones.

It is more logical to place the main profiles across (so it is less likely that they will have to be increased).

The width of the sheet is 1.2 m, the step of the profiles must be less than an integer number of times. Usually it is 40 cm. We mark out:

Important: mark their position (both main and load-bearing) not only on the ceiling, but also on the wall under the horizontal line. Then, when sewing sheets, you will not have the problem “but where is this damn profile ?!”

Carriers (with such a step of the main ones) are needed only at the transverse joints of the GKL, that is, their “step” is 2.5 m, which means that the step of the hangers should be an integer number of times smaller, 50 cm is suitable for us, but the first row of hangers will not be separated from the wall by 50, and by 50/2 = 25 cm, the next by 25 + 50 = 75 cm, etc.

For marking, we take a suspension, apply it to the ceiling at the right points and mark with a marker the places for the holes for the anchor wedges.

For one suspension, at least two are required. Pretty tedious step. It's even more tedious to just drill each of these holes afterwards.

I advise you to use goggles and a respirator, it will be tin.

Mounting the ceiling frame

We wait until the dust settles, stuff the pockets with anchor wedges and fasten the hangers.

Don't forget to stick the sealing tape on them first. It is important to protect your fingers here, we do it with an assistant. After fixing the hanger, carefully pull its ends down; during the subsequent fastening of the main profiles, they should not bend.

Now let's install the main profiles.

If the width of the room is less than 3 meters, simply cut them to the length of the room minus 1 cm and insert them into the guides. If the room is larger, we lengthen each profile so that the resulting super-profile is again 1 cm shorter than the room.

Moreover, the connections of neighboring ones should not be on the same line! And there should be a suspension near the extension cord.

You need to start attaching profiles to suspensions from the corners of the room.

Your assistant will need to attach the rule to the guides on the walls, forming an angle, the grip is as wide as possible so that the rule does not bend (this is very important!). Thus, he will support our software, and he will stand on the same level with the guides.

Your task at this moment is to fix it to the suspension on both sides with four (2 per side) self-tapping screws. Self-tapping screws with a press washer are best taken without a drill. You will do longer, but everything will come out very strong.

And those with a drill often hang out.

So, we fixed it near one corner, we also fix it near the second. If it is not possible to fix the middle of the profile in this way, you should simply attach a rule along it from below, then we will fix it without any problems.

We bend the excess length of the suspensions up (or pre-cut it, as in the pictures). We control the process with a two-meter level.

Using the same method, we hang the second profile, relying so far only on the guides.

Then we go to the opposite wall, we mount 2 more main PCBs. If there are more between these four, we expose them, relying on the already fixed ones.

But if the room is very large, we continue to go from the edges to the middle and, as soon as it becomes possible, we use the already fixed profiles to expose the rest.

I hope the principle is clear. The order is strange, but I believe that it provides the maximum leveling accuracy.

You can pull the cord and expose it, but the cords tend to sag, besides, in this case it is much more difficult to hold the profile during vibration from a screwdriver.

Let's look at our result:

Now we hang CRABs on the places where the profiles will join, and fix them with four self-tapping screws, 2 per side. If you lower the ceiling slightly, please note that then you will have to insert the CRABs into the main PCBs BEFORE they are installed.

In general, make sure that the connectors pass over the profiles.

As soon as all the CRABs are in place, we cut the supporting profiles (remember the margin of 1 cm) and insert them into them, fixing each with four self-tapping screws.

Please note, we DO NOT fasten the carrier to the guide at the bottom with a self-tapping screw, but simply insert it. They will stick together when we sew the sheets.

If it is required to make soundproofing of the ceiling, mineral wool is usually used.

It is cut into rectangles slightly larger than the frame cells and simply pushed into them, additionally clinging to the curved suspensions. That is, roughly speaking, it hangs on the frame. When working with it, use gloves and a respirator, the thing is extremely unpleasant, but you will be surprised how well it absorbs sound. It will be useful to study an article about soundproofing an apartment with your own hands, here it is.

Here is a good video showing the entire process of assembling a plasterboard ceiling:

The only thing is that it is clear that the workers did not try a bit)) Everything is rude and sloppy.

But the process is shown well.

Installation of drywall on the frame

Based on materials from the site: http://siteproremont.ru

Beams on the ceiling are a stylish, but at the same time cozy element of decor. They will bring to the interior so lacking the atmosphere of rustic warmth. However, the chosen material will support the stylistic idea and can be both modern and classic.

Features of the design of low and high ceilings

  • In an interior with low ceilings, ceiling beams of a simple design will look harmonious, for example, along or across the room.
  • In a compact room, it is better to replace the timber with a board or plastic. They will save space.
  • So that the ceiling does not seem low, it is better to use a light palette.
  • In a room with high ceilings, complex designs and dark-colored finishes will look appropriate.

Types and materials of ceiling beams

Carriers

Concrete floors

They are most often used in the construction of urban multi-storey buildings and industrial premises. Ceiling concrete beam will look harmoniously in an interior with a modern style, such as loft, grunge, minimalism.

They are rarely used in the construction of urban housing, more often in cottages, dachas or for individual repairs. Solid or glued timber has a square shape. It is most often used as a ceiling covering.

The log has a round shape. The material is more expensive than timber, but it looks better in the interior from an aesthetic point of view.

metal cover

Metal is stronger and has a longer service life. In the interior of the house, they can be decorated or hidden; when open, they will harmoniously look in an urban industrial style.

The photo shows a spacious high-tech attic room, the ceiling beams are made of metal.

Imitation

Beams, acting as a decor for the interior, should support the overall style.

Wood

Ceiling beams made of wood will add rustic comfort to the interior. Ceiling beams made of timber look luxurious and massive, they are best used in a spacious room, as they are quite voluminous and large structures will take up a lot of space.

For finishing standard city apartments or small rooms, it is better to choose boards, they are more compact. Also, the board can be part of the structure, where a solid beam is used as the basis.

Plastic

Polyurethane or plastic false ceiling beams can become an analogue of wood. The material is not environmentally friendly, but wins in price and variety. Visually, such ceiling beams will differ little from natural wood.

Drywall

Having finished the ceiling with plasterboard panels, you can hide communications, while emphasizing the desired style in the interior. In addition, it is possible to install lamps in the plasterboard ceiling beams.

In the photo, the ceiling beams are constructed of drywall, decorated with concrete-like plaster.

Ceiling finishing material

Stretch fabric

Stretch ceiling is one of the most common finishing options. Popularity is due to ease of installation, great variety and relatively low cost. The stretch fabric heats up to 60 degrees and is fixed on each side of the room. The material can have a glossy and matte surface, which allows you to choose the best option for the style in the interior.

clapboard

Wooden lining will harmoniously look in a room with high ceilings. In a city apartment, the lining can be painted in a light shade, so it will visually hide a minimum of space.

Suspension

The plasterboard ceiling can have a flat or multi-level surface. The ceiling will be decorated with beams, stucco moldings or built-in lighting, depending on stylistic preferences. The design is made of a metal frame and drywall sheets attached to it.

Painting

Requires a perfectly flat surface. This finish is easy to apply and comes in a wide variety of colors. The ceiling will be decorated with plinths, stucco or crossbars.

The photo shows a stylish minimalist bedroom in eco-style.

Wallpaper

For wallpapering, a prepared surface is also required. An interesting option would be photo wallpaper.

Location options

Across

The transverse arrangement of the ceiling beams will visually bring the room closer to the shape of a square, expanding the walls. In a spacious room, you can use a full-fledged timber, complementing the picture with low chandeliers or spotlights. In a compact room, there will be enough boards to support the interior in the desired style.

Along

The longitudinal arrangement of the ceiling beams will make the room longer. By decorating the LED flying panels, you can get the effect of floating in the air.

Diagonally

The diagonal arrangement of the ceiling beams will make the room more voluminous. A similar way of finishing looks interesting in the modern interior of the living room. The crossbars can be located around the entire perimeter of the ceiling or occupy only a part.

half of the ceiling

Finishing the ceiling partially visually divides the room into two zones, while maintaining the area. For example, in the kitchen in this way you can separate the cooking area from the dining area.

Cross stitching

Such an arrangement of ceiling beams will make the space voluminous. To emphasize the relief and the unusual way of positioning, the color of the beams can be made in contrast to the main color.

Dividing a room into zones

Great way to organize space. The design on the ceiling will indicate the desired zone or divide the room into two areas. For example, in a studio apartment, beams can be located in the cooking area, thereby separating the rest of the space, or in the bedroom, a complex design will decorate a sleeping place, indicating a sleeping area.

Roof structures

An interesting interior solution would be the construction of a structure on the ceiling according to the principle of a roof structure, for example, a “rack” or a “farm”. It is these structures that are located under the roof of the building, holding it. Such structures are suitable for interior design with high sloping ceilings.

The photo shows a bright kitchen-living room, ceiling beams are made according to the principle of a roof structure.

Unusual way of styling

The arrangement methods can be completely different from the beautiful patterns that make up any pattern to complex geometric shapes. Complex ceiling structures will harmoniously look in a room with high ceilings.

Decor methods

Aging

The effect of aging is characteristic of many styles, such as Provence, Shabby Chic, Rustic. In the interior, such items look rustic, cozy and warm.

Painting

You can highlight the ceiling beams by painting them in a color that contrasts with the ceiling, for example, red beams on a light background. In this way, you can beat any theme or add a few bright details to the interior.

Lacquering

The lacquered wooden ceiling beams will retain the unique pattern of the wood. Lacquering will make the material brighter and protect it from harmful effects. This finish is suitable for interior in country style, loft, chalet.

Patterns, carving

Painted patterns or wood carvings will look not just luxurious, but unique. Patterns and openwork carvings will perfectly match the Russian style. A more restrained type of carving is suitable for decorating a classic interior.

Color selection

White

White ceiling beams on a light background will look very gentle. Ceilings do not seem low and the design will get its "zest". White beams look interesting against the background of a pastel-colored ceiling.

In the photo, the bleached boards on the ceiling look very gentle, they harmoniously fit into the interior of the bedroom with a pastel color palette.

Brown

The classic decor is brown wood beams against a white ceiling. Due to the contrast of colors, you can adjust the space of the room.

The photo shows a spacious kitchen-dining room. The ceiling is finished with white wooden slats and contrasting brown beams.

Gray

Gray ceiling beams on a light background do not have a strong contrast, but still stand out in the overall picture. It looks interesting combination of rural details and trendy, trendy colors today.

Beige

Beige ceiling beams harmoniously look both on a flat ceiling and on a slatted one. A light shade, close to the color of natural wood, will decorate the interior of a house or bath in any style.

The black

Contrasting black ceiling beams will successfully complement the room in a modern style, echoing other details of decoration or furniture.

Bright

Ceiling beams of a bright shade will decorate a modern interior or a children's room. A bright color can be combined with other details in the interior, such as textiles, decorative elements or small pieces of furniture.

Photo in the interior of the apartment

Kitchen

The location, color and material of the ceiling beams depends on the size and style of the kitchen. In a compact room, minimalistic straight crossbars on a glossy surface will look harmonious. Another way to save space is to light-colored ceiling beams. In a spacious kitchen, the location will depend entirely on the layout of the room or the style in the interior.

The photo shows the interior of the kitchen with a black set. Partial finishing of the ceiling with crossbars separates the cooking area.

Living room

The ceiling in the hall will be decorated with beams on the background of a flat surface. Depending on the area of the room, the beams may have a light palette that is identical or similar to the main color of the ceiling finish. Or contrast against the general background, thereby playing the role of the main object in the room.

Bedroom

Wooden beams will make the bedroom more comfortable. The design can be around the entire perimeter of the ceiling or just above the bed, indicating the sleeping area. The color of the finish depends on the style of the room.

The photo shows a delicate bedroom in pastel colors. On the ceiling is a plasterboard construction and decorative beams.

Children's

In the children's room, ceiling beams will support thematic design, such as marine or eco style. Crossbars can become part of the image of the room.

Hallway and corridor

If the hallway or corridor is small and devoid of natural light, then the best solution would be a modest ceiling structure in the form of several beams along or across the room.

Bathroom

When decorating a bathroom, it is worth considering the constantly changing humidity. The best solution would be to use plastic or polyurethane false ceiling panels, which can also imitate the desired material.

Photo in the interior of the house

With a sufficient area of \u200b\u200ba private house, there are more opportunities for implementing ideas. In log houses with load-bearing log or block beams, there is no need to disguise them; finishing in the form of grinding or painting will be enough.

The photo shows a country house in the style of a chalet. Finishing and filling are made of natural materials.

The interior of a cottage or country house with a high sloping ceiling will be decorated with a three-dimensional structure made of wooden beams, repeating the roof structure.

In country houses and baths, natural wood trim will look most harmonious, emphasizing the closeness of nature.

Having finished the attic with beams, you can create your own secluded corner, from which you will get a cozy bedroom or a place to relax.

The bath will also radiate the warmth and comfort of a real Russian bath, it is enough to sand the load-bearing or decorative beams and cover with special paint or varnish.

Suitable styles

Loft

The loft style is characterized by a minimal or complete absence of decorative finishes. If the room has metal, concrete or wooden ceiling beams, then they must be left. In their absence, false beams will help, which can also adjust the space.

Provence

The interior in Provence style is done in light pastel colors and mostly from natural materials. Wooden beams can be painted in one of these shades or have the original color and texture of wood. This direction is characterized by artificially aged pieces of furniture and decoration.

The photo shows a kitchen in olive color in the style of Provence. The ceiling finish is made in one color with the effect of aging.

Country

Country style is hard to imagine without wooden beams. A spacious room will be decorated with complex structures made of timber, in a small room there will be enough simple wooden boards in the right direction.

Scandinavian

The Scandinavian-style interior has a light, most often white color scheme. Materials for finishing and filling the room are natural, such as wood or stone. The ceiling beams made of bleached wood will look harmonious in the interior.

Modern

The ceiling in a modern style can be decorated with beams made of wood, metal or drywall. The arrangement can be simple or form a complex geometric figure. The design will be complemented by stylish lamps, LED strip or spotlights.

Classical

The interior in a classic style will be decorated with smooth wooden or plaster beams. Cross-to-cross laying will look harmonious.

Chalet and Rustic

The chalet and rustic style is characterized by the cozy atmosphere of an Alpine home. Wooden ceiling beams do not have to be painted, the original color, texture and pattern of wood will come in handy. In such a design, it is appropriate to use lamps with warm light, emphasizing the comfort and warmth of the interior.

The photo shows a chalet-style attic. Finishing is completely made of natural wood.

Lighting and backlight

Different types of lighting will have completely different results. Spotlights can be mounted in the beams or between them in the ceiling.

For complex three-dimensional structures, mobile lamps can be attached directly to the beams and change their position if necessary.

The chandelier should reflect the general stylistic idea, for example, in a country-style room it can be a low forged chandelier, and in the interior Provence is neat with several textile shades.

An unusual effect is created by the LED strip, sinking it into the side parts of the beam creates a feeling of floating in the air.

DIY

Before proceeding with the repair, it is necessary to determine the size of the beams and the distance between them. The distance between the beams depends on the area and height of the room.

  • In a room with high ceilings, it is acceptable to place the beams close together, so the room will appear a little lower.
  • Accordingly, in a small room, ceiling beams are best fixed at a sufficient distance.
  • The length of the beams depends on the desire to finish the room along the entire length or select only a part.

One of the easiest ways to build ceiling beams is to make them out of Styrofoam.

  1. Sheets of foam are cut to the desired size and glued together into a bar.
  2. After that, they can be pasted over with a film with imitation of wood or plastic and fixed to the ceiling. Installation is quick and effortless.

How to attach beams to the ceiling

Each material has a different weight and properties, respectively, the fastening is also different.

  • Before starting work, it is necessary to reproduce marks on the ceiling where future crossbars will be fixed.
  • For foam beams, liquid nails are sufficient.
  • To be sure of the result, the ceiling can be primed.

Wooden decorative beams are fixed with bars, which are attached to the ceiling at a distance of 1 meter. A wooden false beam is fixed on self-tapping screws over the bars.

The photo shows the installation diagram of wooden and polyurethane beams.

Photo gallery

Ceiling decoration is an important detail in the interior. Ceiling structures are a good way to bring individuality and character to the design. In an apartment with a modern style, ceilings can be made of plastic or metal; natural wood will look harmonious in a modern and provincial design. Below are photo examples of the use of beams on the ceiling in rooms for various functional purposes.

Alteration of the ceiling or how to close the beams

In most old private houses, the ceiling is "decorated" with beams (rafts) - this was such an ancient way of roofing. And in the most economical and fairly durable way.
But still, these open beams had some drawbacks.
Firstly.
Due to the lack of stiffeners and a long period of limitation, they sagged.
Secondly.
Unattractive and rough looking.

Now many designers are decorating the ceilings with decorative beams (Decowood), made of high-strength polyurethane with a coating that imitates wood.

This method, of course, is good and beautiful, because the fake beams are absolutely even.
With old beams, such a ceiling is simply not possible due to the fact that they are so strongly curved that there is no way to level them and somehow ennoble them.
Therefore, the best option in this case is to close the beams with drywall.
To work, we need a tool.

  • Drill with a set of drills.
  • Metal shears for cutting galvanized profiles.
  • Wallpaper knife for cutting drywall.
  • Level + long ruler-rule.
  • Ax and chisels for processing beams.
  • Screwdriver.
  • Painting tool.

More material is needed.

  • Drywall.
  • The profile is galvanized.
  • Suspension straight for the profile.
  • Self-tapping screws for metal for GK 3.5 × 25 mm,
  • 3.5 × 9.5 mm "flea" for the profile, as well as self-tapping screws of different lengths, but already on wood.

Why do I need wood screws, I will tell below.

  • Serpyanka for sealing joints between sheets of drywall.
  • Perforated outer corner.
  • Styrofoam ceiling plinth.
  1. Primer.
  2. Putty (start / finish).
  3. Water based paint.
  • Spotlights for lighting.
  • Mirrors with facet 150×150 mm for decoration.
  • Glue "Liquid nails".

The entire course of work on the alteration of the ceiling will take place in 4 stages.
1. Preparation.
2. Installing the frame and fastening drywall.
3. Finishing and decoration.
4. Installation of fixtures.

Stage one - preparing the ceiling for alteration.

One of the most difficult, because. beams (swarfs) sagged to varying degrees.
This was easily verified by measuring with a tape measure from the floor to the beams at five points in the room (at the corners and in the middle).
The strongest sag was formed on the middle beam.

Then, when using the ruler rule and the level, it turned out that absolutely all the beams were originally installed at different levels.

As a result, we get a quiet horror, which in order to fix it, you either need to significantly lower the ceiling, or replace the middle beam with a metal profile (I-beam or channel).

In short, we refused to reduce the height of the ceiling, because we were not included in the building codes.

note. that according to the rules of construction, the height of the ceiling in residential premises should be at least 220 cm.

They also refused to replace a wooden beam with a metal one due to the high cost and laboriousness of the replacement process itself. And, it should be noted, not safe!

The way out was found in an elementary optical illusion, i.e. we decided to simply divide the ceiling into three parts and make it on three levels.
It was this decision that allowed us to win the size.

If we made the entire ceiling under one level, then it had to be lowered by twenty centimeters, or even more.

Stage two - the device frame from the profile for the future ceiling.

Our task is to first make a frame over the middle beam, which sagged the most.

In order to align the beam and not lose size, you need to carve a place for the profile with an ax and a chisel.
We slightly trim the beam itself with an ax.
After the frame is constructed, such a box is obtained with a width of 50 cm.

This is the optimal size, which makes it possible to install spotlights without problem and does not create bulkiness of the entire ceiling.

If you make the width smaller, the lamps will not fit, if you make it wider, it will not look.

note. before facing plasterboard, it is necessary to carry out electrical wiring.

We sew up the resulting box with drywall.
And already to it at different levels we attach side profiles for the frames of the remaining two ceilings.

We also fasten the profile to the walls according to the level using long self-tapping screws (70-90 mm) for wood.

Advice.
If the walls of the house are made of adobe or other soft material, then it is better to drive the screws, which is called “insolent” with a screwdriver.

In general, it turns out that in the course of preparing and manufacturing the frames, we had to comb almost all the beams with an ax in order to keep the height of the ceiling as high as possible.

Advice.
The framing of the plasterboard ceiling frame should be as thick as possible so that there is no sagging in the future. It is not advisable to save on this!

When the frame is completely ready, we attach drywall sheets to it.

Stage three - we finish the ceiling.

First you need to apply soil.

note. You can use the soil of any manufacturer.
Yes, and not only primer, but also putty, and paint, etc. The main thing is that all construction chemicals should be from one manufacturer.

Then we seal the seams between the sheets with sickle and putty (Knauf Fugenfüller).

We putty everything in one layer of “starting” and in two layers of “finishing”.
We carefully grind.
Mode in the desired size of the ceiling plinth and with the help of putty we attach around the entire perimeter of the ceiling, including the central box.
We paint everything with water-based paint.

After drying, we mark the central part of the ceiling for fixing the decor in the form of mirror squares 150 × 150 mm in size with a facet.

note. We fix the mirrors with Liquid Nails glue.

Stage four is the final one. Installation of spotlights.

To do this, we also make markings so that there is a uniform distance between them.
We drill holes for the lamps.

We check, and only then we stick it in.

Another option for closing the beams, but only the step is not in the middle, but at the beginning of the room.
The order of doing the work is the same as in the first option.

First, a step is made, and then the entire ceiling.

If there is no desire to putty, clean and paint, then there is an easier way.
For example, finishing with polystyrene squares 50 × 50 cm.

I once talked about this method of finishing the ceiling in the article "Repair work in the house."

Using glue "Liquid nails" or "Dragon", or "Titan" without a difference, we attach a new ceiling to the drywall.

Cuts easily with a wallpaper knife under the ruler.

All the ceilings were redone and brought a fresh breath into your house.

See you in new articles! Sincerely, Filippov Yuri.

2 thoughts on “Reworking the ceiling or how to close the beams”

The squares for finishing are specified as 50cm x 50cm. Is it because of the prevalence, or for some other reason, exactly this size?

These squares initially have such factory dimensions, or rather, foam polystyrene plates, which are made specifically for finishing the ceiling.

The function of ceiling beams, basically, does not include a decorative function at all. Their task is to take on the load of the roof of the house, and also serve as a support for. Many homeowners who have ceiling beams at their disposal try to hide this structural element. But at the moment, more and more often you can find options in which the ceiling structure performs a decorative function. It doesn’t matter if it originally existed or was made specifically for the client, you can beat the beam on the ceiling, its location and functions in different ways. There are a huge number of options.

At the moment, there are many ways to decorate unsightly ceiling beams.

Challenges facing ceiling beams

The premises in which such products are used as a decorative element can be of different purposes. For example, it can be an office, kitchen, bedroom, living room, even a corridor. How massive they will be in size, as well as their number, is determined based on the size of the room.

Take, for example, the kitchen (large and spacious). In such a room, a large number of various large-sized details will organically look. But a small area of \u200b\u200bthe corridor can be decorated with just a few products.

The use of similar products

This way of decorating the ceiling, like beams, is considered very original and at the same time inexpensive. But this is not all the advantages of these systems. Here are some examples of what tasks the devices can easily cope with in modern construction.

If indoors, they will help emphasize the amount of space available, and if this option seems uncomfortable to you, then placing it at a lower level will visually reduce the height of the room.

Not only the problem of high ceilings is solved using such systems, for low ceilings there is a use case. In order to increase the height of the ceilings, the beams must continue on the surface of the walls. It is not at all necessary to make the same kind of construction on the wall, you can simply imitate its presence, for example, using a thin plank.

If you use such systems in the interior of the attic or attic, then this option will give the room more comfort and harmony.

Another option for using elements in the interior provides for the ability to visually increase the room in width or length. To do this, the parts are placed perpendicular to the side of the room that they want to expand. To add volume to the ceiling space, you can arrange the elements in a lattice or herringbone pattern.

These elements in the interior are used to perform zoning of the room. For example, a large structure located across the kitchen will create a division into work and dining areas. Only in this case, its system should be located at the junction of two existing zones, for example, pass over the bar that visually separates the kitchen.

Ceiling support and decorative beams can be used as a basis for mounting lighting fixtures.

Another popular use case is the placement of lighting on it. These can be built-in lamps, LED backlighting or chandeliers (lamps) hanging on it, and so on.

The system in the kitchen interior can be used as a holder for various dishes and other things. By attaching a variety of hooks to it, they can be used to dry herbs, place glasses, pots, baskets and so on with their help.

If the beams are real, and not a high-quality imitation, then you can attach cozy swings or hanging chairs to them, which will also add additional comfort and coziness.

Decoration of ceiling beams

Depending on what style you adhere to in the interior, you can decorate these products in different ways. Many historical and modern interior trends allow the presence of such devices in the room.

Beam decoration can be arranged in any style direction.

  1. If you are an adherent of the classical style and you are not alien to the elements of luxury in the interior, then you can decorate the beams with the help of carvings, paintings and vignettes. You can simply paint using gentle tones or the “silver look” option. Lacquered ceiling beams will look appropriate in a classic style.
  2. The smooth version of the beams can be used in modern interior trends. The effect will be no less. Modern style allows for bold and creative solutions. For example, dyeing not only in standard colors (white, black, brown), but brighter ones, such as red, yellow, blue, pink, and so on.
  3. For those who prefer high-tech style, a metallic shade can be offered. Often in this kind of interiors there are ordinary light bulbs, unmasked wires and a metallic type of construction. All these are non-traditional elements of decor.
  4. For those who prefer country style (rural style), it is necessary to choose a design in which the ceiling beams match the appearance of aged wood. Shades may vary.
  5. The main presence of a special texture, emphasizing the rough processing of wooden surfaces, inherent in such a rural style. For French rural style, whitewashed wood systems are best suited. They should be distinguished by accuracy and elegance.

If the visibility of the ceiling beams is not provided for by the project, then you can use decorative false beams.

The presence of real full-bodied wooden beams in the interior is considered a luxury. And of course, this should be provided for even when building a house. Only in order to decorate the ceiling, the installation of such elements is impractical. Because they are very heavy.

But there is another option, if you want to decorate your ceiling with beams, you can use imitation. Differences from the original in this case will be minimal.

Similar parts that imitate real ones are made of polyurethane. Polyurethane devices are lightweight, which means that their installation will be much easier. The price also remains affordable. Surface options are quite diverse.
