Humiliation., Psychology - Gestalt Club. Humiliation is the strongest human emotion

Humiliation is most often a purposeful human behavior that leads to a decrease in the level of value, significance and positive self-perception of another person. This can be done with a completely conscious purpose or as a result of attempts to assert oneself at the expense of another. Humiliation can be a destructive form of upbringing, or it can be manifested as a personality trait that acquires a significant characterological influence.

For many, the question of how to survive humiliation is relevant, since it is often the starting point for the development of pathological psychological conditions. Experienced humiliation can change a person's behavior, make him overly reinsured and expect a blow to his own conceit. Humiliation has the most devastating impact in childhood, and affects the formation of subsequent reality and ways of contacting it.

Children who are often humiliated can grow up as insecure and insecure individuals who are afraid to take on any business, consider themselves unworthy of love, support, and rewards. But development on the principle of counteraction can also happen, and then such a child, becoming an adult, begins to apply a humiliating strategy of behavior to everyone around him, for him there are no limits and exceptions, since this is the norm for his picture of the world. Years of therapy are needed to return an adequate response to the world after a severe, complete humiliation of childhood.

What is humiliation

Humiliation is on the other side of arrogance, and the more arrogant a person is, the more inclined he is to humiliate others. The desire to show oneself in a favorable light knows no bounds, and if this requires denigrating others, then this will be done.

The feeling of humiliation serves as a kind of regulator of social relationships. By humiliating another, society or a particular person gives a message about shortcomings and inconsistency with expectations.

The humiliation of a woman by a man is perceived so painfully, in particular, because it is almost a direct text about her inconsistency with his ideas. The modern man's need for social acceptance is practically tantamount to survival, so any humiliation on the part of society is perceived as a personal threat to existence.

If a person has a very high opinion of himself, considers himself right everywhere, then a collision with his own inadequacy and humiliation can become a fatal test for him. It is because of the great difference between social perception and one's own that the whole personal structure and perception of the world as such can collapse. People who evaluate themselves adequately and critically, treat their own shortcomings with humor, and are practically not subject to humiliation.

Humiliation can also be divided according to the source of its origin. So, other people can humiliate, specifically reducing the merits of a person, showing how much better and more successful they are. This is a conscious humiliation, purposeful and being a factor of influence from the outside. But internal prerequisites for self-humiliation are also possible, when a person perceives the successes of others as his own failure, when he himself deliberately downplays his contribution or success. For a similar warehouse of character, in order to feel humiliation, external factors are not needed, a person copes on his own. If such a trait is not developed, then even the special influence of others, in an attempt to lower self-esteem, may be unsuccessful.

Why does a man humiliate a woman

The humiliation of a woman by a man happens quite often, many consider this the norm and pass by, someone is desperately fighting, but in order to counteract such a phenomenon, it is necessary to understand the reasons for its occurrence.

One of the reasons for such male behavior may be an unconscious response to female humiliation, screams, insults or claims. Negative statements have a very strong effect on the male psyche and immediately trigger defense mechanisms in it. Sometimes it can be going on the defensive and silence all evening, and sometimes the degree of the situation is so high that the man immediately goes on the offensive.

Any humiliation is aimed at and, and the best revenge would be to disrupt such plans, that is, you need to organize your life in order to be as happy, successful and independent of the attacks and sharp statements of your husband as possible. If he resorts to humiliation, then other methods have ended, and the ineffectiveness of such a method will make him fight in hysterics. Many people end relationships after this, not being able to recognize the other's right to his choice and happiness, but there are those who are aware of the limits of their capabilities and go to an open dialogue.

Why does a wife humiliate her husband

In many ways, the reasons why women humiliate their husbands are the same as men's. This primarily includes the system of relations in the parental family and the absorbed style of education. Perhaps if not in family tradition, but in further public places (school, institute, work), a woman was often humiliated, then she will spread this style of communication and carry it further in her life.

Many, thus, receive an emotional discharge, relieve excess stress or receive missing attention. After being beaten at work, a woman may well overreact to her husband's shortcomings. Doubts and lowering one's self-esteem can also be perceived quite painfully and require drastic recovery measures. And if at this moment there are no suitable conditions for pampering and appreciating yourself, raising your level, then this is achieved by lowering the level of another. It can be dangerous to carry out such manipulations with unfamiliar people, but with the closest ones, great opportunities open up. In justification, we can say that such tendencies work unconsciously and disappear when the provoking factors are corrected.

Of the conscious motives for humiliating a husband, there may be inherited systems for controlling communication. Many women believe that if a man is constantly praised, he will relax and do nothing, degrade personally and morally. In this case, humiliation is a perverse way of caring and demonstrating the love and desire for all kinds of development of the spouse. It is difficult to predict what results this will have. A person with adequate self-esteem and brought up in a prosperous family is unlikely to endure such treatment for a long time. And for someone who has been humiliated since childhood, this can become a familiar and native form of interaction, the only one of all that is understandable.

Also, a woman can humiliate a man if she is unhappy, angry or receives little attention. That is, globally, he is not really bad, but she is so bad that she wants to blame her husband for this. But humiliation can also manifest itself when there is no love left for the husband, no respect, no value for what he does. Usually, this behavior can no longer be corrected, and the marriage gradually dies.

And there are people for whom depreciation is practically the only model of communication. Moreover, they do not notice this, do not realize and do not even imagine that it is possible in a different way.

What is behind the depreciation?

Depreciation is. Shell, in a word. People acquire it throughout their lives, and the longer they live, the thicker and heavier this shell is. Who needs it and why?

It is needed by people with vulnerable self-esteem in order to maintain their positive image: by lowering the other, exalting themselves. Those who have "mastered" this defense mechanism usually do not understand the language of love. They understand the language of power and respect. First of all, you need to respect yourself. For what? You can respect yourself either by developing and achieving impressive success (a constructive path), or by “lowering”, humiliating, devaluing others. What is easier? Of course, the second.

Some - as strange as it may sound - use devaluation as a way to support their own low self-esteem. In this case, people do not belittle others, but themselves - their knowledge, skills, goals, achievements. Naturally, not just like that, but in order, for example, once again not to be disappointed in oneself in case of failure (Well, I’m incapable, what can I take from me? What achievements can losers have?).

Depreciation also protects us from feelings. “Shut up, woman!”, “The man is grinding today!”. They usually devalue those who are in great need and who are greatly distrusted. They devalue so as not to get close, not to become attached and not to open up. And so that later, when they hit (and they certainly hit - all past experience speaks of this), it would not hurt.

Comes from childhood

Very often, parents themselves build their communication, belittling each other and simultaneously pointing out to the child his shortcomings. And the child perceives this model as the only one where he knows how to exist, takes it with him into adulthood.

Moreover, parents are people too.

With low self-esteem, self-doubt and the feeling that everything in their lives is somehow not very good. They can be eaten up by an unconscious but burning reluctance for anyone to be better than themselves. What do we get then? “All children are like children, and you! ..” “Again, I collected my models all day long. I'd rather do my homework!" “Doobie! Idiot! Nothing good will come of you!”

And then a “child” who devalues others and himself grows up instead of a self-confident, successful and knowing what he wants adult.

Defense strategy

How to behave with devaluing people?

If possible - do not get involved, run away, delete them from your life.

If this is a close person, you are emotionally significant for him and there is hope that they will hear you, you can talk about your feelings, reactions to his words and actions - that this is unpleasant, insulting, painful for you. Ask not to do this again, say what kind of attitude you expect and will demand.

If this doesn’t work either, but you want to continue the relationship with this person, clearly catch the moment of depreciation, recognize it and in no case take it personally, but look deeper - what is behind it. And there is, as a rule, an unconscious panic fear of intimacy and a neurotic need for love.

Personal opinion

Anton Boglevsky:

Only weak, non-self-sufficient people raise their self-esteem at the expense of others. There are no such people in my environment and cannot be. And I do not recommend keeping in touch with them if they do not listen to you and continue to behave as before.

Often the result of resolving conflict situations is the humiliation of the honor and dignity of another person. Moreover, not only in personal communication, but also the spreading of impartial rumors behind the back of one of the disputants. This is called slander. Under the concept of insulting a person, according to the law, obscene rude words spoken to the victim fall. At the same time, his pride is hurt, first of all, in his personal opinion, and his status and prestige in the eyes of those around him are also belittled. In general, the reputation of a person is irreparably damaged.

No one has the right to humiliate another, even if the words addressed to him are justified (that is, the information is reliable). You can express what you think about another person without using offensive obscene language.

For such an act in relation to a person, the law provides for punishment. Articles of not only the civil code and the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, but also the constitution of the Russian Federation stand to protect the honor and dignity of a person. These norms of the law clearly prescribe the rights and freedoms of people, and put the dignity of the individual under the protection of the state without any exceptions.

Under article 282 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, one can fall under responsibility for agitation for interethnic conflicts, religious wars and humiliation of not even one person, but the entire nation. The punishment for this can be up to imprisonment or involvement in various types of work without fail for a certain period. Also, the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation provides for criminal liability for insulting officials in the process of fulfilling a public duty. And military citizens of our country for such an act will have to go to a penal battalion by court order. Provided that both parties to the conflict are liable for military service in any rank. Before determining the punishment for humiliating the dignity and honor of a person under the Code of Administrative Offenses or the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, it is necessary to understand what it is in the understanding of the law.

Human dignity is understood as his self-awareness in society, the attitude towards him of third-party people from his immediate or distant environment. Opinion of third-party people about the personality. The presence in a person of certain moral, moral and individual skills and qualities for which he is valued by friends, relatives, colleagues, etc. It does not matter the level of social value of the dignity of a person of any social status. The honor of a person needs the protection of the law, even if he himself is not very good in nature. The slightest belittling of respect or slander, if there is a sufficient evidence base, will be subject to punishment by the law. As we have already said, punishment will be imposed for insult, even if the humiliating words were inherently truthful. The main thing here is that the following facts are present:

  • publicity;
  • obscene rough speech;
  • violation of generally accepted norms of behavior.

While slander has a slightly different background. The concept of slander defines the transmission of deliberately implausible rumors about a person from one person to another. At the same time, the social level of the individual in the eyes of other people is also belittled. This illegal act will already be punished under the article of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (No. 129). That is, the acts seem to be similar, but still have a slight difference, therefore, according to the law, measures to protect human dignity are different. Although the result in both cases is the same - an insult to personal dignity, humiliation, deprivation of a person's honor.

In what cases is it possible to reconcile the victim and the accused?

Insulting a person is a matter of private prosecution, therefore a criminal case against a person who discredits the honor of another person is initiated only after a complaint and statement. The accusation can be withdrawn only in case of reconciliation between the victim and the accused. It can only happen before the court retires to the deliberation room. After the verdict is passed, the parties will not be able to reconcile.

If for some reason the victim cannot appear in court to represent his interests, with the permission of the prosecutor, a criminal case can be initiated without a complaint from the injured party. In this case, the reconciliation of the two parties is impossible.

Insult must necessarily be expressed in an indecent form, as well as humiliate the honor of the victim. It can be expressed orally, when a person gives a negative assessment to another person, as well as in writing, when the offender passes notes or letters containing obscene and obscene statements. If there is any doubt that the actions were committed against the victim, then a criminal case may not be initiated.

You should control your emotions so that you do not have to be responsible for rash words and actions. Refrain from indecent statements, as for this you risk being prosecuted. Many people often insult each other without thinking about the dire consequences. Therefore, in order not to spoil the reputation of an honest citizen who lives in accordance with the laws of the Russian Federation, watch your speech, and also do not speak indecently towards other people so as not to be convicted. Try to avoid humiliating another person, as this can lead to serious consequences that are unfavorable for you. Even if you think a person is bad, do not insult him.

If someone insulted you, you should not leave it unattended. Contact law enforcement in order to punish the offender according to the law, but if you do not want to go to court, get an apology from the person who humiliated your honor.
