Very little time is left before the most joyful Orthodox holiday. On the eve of Easter, Orthodox priests told Russian Planet how to properly prepare for it and what activities to devote the Easter week to.

"Thursday is not for general cleaning"

In preparation for Easter, it is important not to get carried away with excessively worldly affairs and worries.

In the atheistic Soviet period, there was a distorted idea of what Maundy Thursday is, what is the meaning of this day, - Archpriest Mikhail Shirokov, candidate of theology, tells the correspondent of the Republic of Poland. - People have forgotten that this day is also called Maundy Thursday, Good Thursday, because it was on this day that Jesus Christ, on the eve of his Crucifixion, at the Last Supper established the main sacrament of the Church - the Eucharist. And this day is called Clean because he washed the feet of his disciples, thus showing an example of true humility.

People, who were deprived of the opportunity to communicate with priests during the Soviet era, interpreted the meaning of the word “pure” in their own way and filled it with a different content, alien to Christianity.

They decided that on this day they need to wash their homes and go to the bath themselves, - continues Mikhail Shirokov. - Meanwhile, the most important occupation on this day for a believer is to purify his soul through the sacrament of repentance and take communion. Putting your house and your body in order is, of course, also a necessary and good thing, but the idea that this is exactly what you need to do on Maundy Thursday is a replicated superstition. Neither on this, nor on any other day of the Easter holidays, church tradition suggests concentrating on everyday life.

Red is better than blue

So that the preparation for the holiday does not distract from it, it is worth preparing food for the Easter table in advance.

Eggs are best painted in the traditional even red light, which symbolizes the Resurrection of the Savior for Christians. Tradition also connects him with Mary Magdalene, who presented the egg to the Roman emperor Tiberius when she told him the news of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The emperor laughed, declaring that this was as impossible as the egg in her hands suddenly turning red. And at that moment a miracle happened - the egg turned red, like the blood of Christ.

Painted pysanka eggs, eggs with a pattern in which blue color predominates - all this appeared in Russia later, as well as stickers on the shell, - Archpriest Vladimir Smirnov explains to the correspondent of the Republic of Poland. - The Church does not consider it blasphemy when parishioners succumb to this fashion. However, at least those eggs that you plan to break the fast with your family should still be painted red.

But decorating Easter eggs with stickers depicting the faces of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Mother of God, saints is completely unacceptable.

Sacred images should not be placed where they can be defiled by negligence or intentionally, continues Vladimir Smirnov. - It is important to do the right thing with the shell of Easter eggs. Throwing it away is blasphemy, it is not garbage to be thrown into the trash heap. Therefore, it is better to do with it the way our ancestors did - burn it in a personal plot or summer cottage, and then bury the ashes where people or animals will not trample on it with their feet.

Meat has no place in the temple

There is nothing shameful in the fact that some housewives will prefer not to bake Easter cakes, but to buy them in a store. It is much more important to consecrate them, as well as Easter cottage cheese and eggs, in the church after the Saturday morning service on April 30, thus asking God's blessing for the festive meal.

You can consecrate any other Easter food. However, you can’t bring meat food to the temple, it must be left on the church territory, Vladimir Smirnov clarifies. - Do not get too carried away with cooking for the holiday. After all, the main thing in preparing for Easter is not to clean your house, not to bake as many Easter cakes or paint eggs as possible, but to attend services, read the Gospel. You need to prepare your heart, open it to the Risen Christ, who conquered death and triumphed over it. Easter should be celebrated with peace in the heart. Therefore, if you have accumulated old grievances, then it is better to reconcile with the offenders. And if this is not possible, then at least forgive them in your heart and pray for them. Remove this burden from your soul. If you offended someone, apologize. If you don't keep your promise, keep it. If you have children, then help them prepare for the holiday. Little children need to be told about Christ, choosing such words so that they reach their hearts, so that the children love Jesus. All this is more important than worldly affairs.

Show attention and love

You can start breaking the fast on Sunday, after the morning liturgy and communion. No food is forbidden on the holiday, even a little alcohol is quite acceptable. However, it is still better to observe moderation, excluding strong alcoholic drinks and limiting yourself to Cahors. It is best to leave the fast gradually - first returning cottage cheese and cheese, then fish, and only after that meat and alcohol.

- One should not forget that both Easter itself and the entire Bright Week are days of joy, not sorrow. Therefore, in no case should you be sad, sad, think about the bad and spoil the mood for yourself or your loved ones, says Vladimir Smirnov. - It is best to devote this week to people with whom communication brings joy. Invite them to visit you, go to them yourself, give Easter eggs, Easter cakes. Be sure to visit your parents, show them your attention and love. It is good to visit the sick, lonely and suffering, to help them in word and deed, to treat them with an Easter meal.

Many are sure that the Church forbids doing homework during the Easter week. However, there is no mention of any ban. It’s just that these days it’s much more important to devote yourself to the holiday, communicating with loved ones and helping them, rather than doing everyday things.

To the cemeteries - to Radunitsa

It is undesirable to visit cemeteries on Easter. Christ's Resurrection is the triumph of life over death, and in the hearts of believers there should be no place for grief and sorrow. Therefore, during the entire Easter week, funeral services and memorial services are not held in churches. And for the remembrance of the dead, a special day is provided - Radunitsa or Parents' Day. This year it falls on May 10th. Since this is Tuesday, a working day, those who cannot visit the graves of deceased relatives will be able to do so on the next weekend after Radunitsa, without violating any Orthodox canons.

The tradition of visiting cemeteries on Easter dates back to Soviet times, when believers were persecuted by an atheistic state. For participation in the Easter service or just for the consecration of Easter cake or eggs, a person could lose many benefits - for example, lose the queue for an apartment or position, explains Mikhail Shirokov. - Therefore, in the Soviet period of the history of our country, believers went to the cemetery - as a rule, they were located next to the temples. Visiting the graves of loved ones was perceived as a kind of familiarization with the church tradition. And this Soviet rift in the religious consciousness of the Russian people has not been healed to this day.

On Easter week, it is better to visit not cemeteries, but Easter liturgies, take part in religious processions that take place in many churches throughout Bright Week.

The Easter holiday is not only bright Easter eggs made with your own hands and Easter cakes. Easter is a day for which they prepare according to all traditions and sincerely believe that if you follow all the canons of integrity, then all your wishes will certainly come true. That is why it is necessary to know all the traditions of Easter in order to properly prepare for this Orthodox holiday.

Easter holiday - stories and traditions

  • Preparation for the great day begins with Strict Fasting. It begins after the end of the oil festivals. The strict fast is the longest of all and lasts 7 weeks. During this period, the Orthodox refuse food of animal origin. On certain days, you should completely refuse food or eat raw foods. Abstinence in food symbolizes that a person should lead a modest lifestyle in ordinary everyday life, refrain from temptations and, of course, not sin.
  • Holy Week. Pure Thursday before Easter. The awakening of each person should take place at sunrise and be fully bought. This is how the body is cleansed. On this day you can eat bread and drink red wine. Then you should do a general cleaning in the house, that is, clean the house of negativity, and simply prepare the house for the upcoming holiday. Making noise, singing and having fun is prohibited. It is on this day that you can start preparing for the festive Easter table. You need to put the dough on the Easter eggs and you can paint Easter eggs. As a rule, children are engaged in coloring Easter eggs and Easter eggs. In the last few years, plastic tapes with pictures have become very popular. They are extremely easy to use. You need to put a piece of tape on a boiled egg and lower it into hot water. Just a moment and the egg is decorated. Images on the tape are very different from cartoon pictures to images of icons and saints. It is with icons and faces of saints that such ribbons should not be bought. The clergy do not allow them to be used, since during the meal the film is cut off and thus the face of the saint is cut. It's not churchly.

The egg is a symbol of life and miraculous resurrection. In iconography, the resurrected Jesus was surrounded by a radiance similar in shape to an egg. Krashenka is credited with healing properties.

  • Good Friday is the day of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. This is the saddest day not only of this week, but of the whole year. Services are held in all churches. You can not sing, dance and somehow have fun. You can't even speak loudly. It is forbidden to pick up sharp objects. According to an ancient belief, one cannot work in the garden, that is, pierce the earth with iron. This could be in trouble. It is also impossible to wash - it is believed that the linen washed on this day is covered with blood. On Good Friday, you can bake Easter cakes and bread. Food should be completely abandoned. Often even the weather on this day is rainy, as if nature itself is yearning.
  • The Resurrection of Christ is one of the main holidays of the entire religious world. Although in some religions it is celebrated on different dates, the essence remains the same. Already in the evening, and especially from midnight, all churches announce the beginning of services with a bell ringing. They are held especially solemnly and last until the morning. The end of the service is the illumination of the brought dishes. Parishioners carefully consider the Easter basket and try not to forget anything. The main products in the Easter basket are pasques, krashanki, wine. It is customary to leave some of the dishes in the church for the poor and destitute.

Traditions of celebrating Easter

As soon as believers come from church, it is customary to "Christen." Such a greeting is used during the week, that is, until the following Sunday. The dialogue goes like this:

Christ is Risen! - and you need to wait for the answer -

Truly Risen!

They repeat the words three times and reinforce with a threefold kiss. Kissing only with close people. For acquaintances or friends, a verbal greeting is enough.

Families sit down at the festively laid table and start the meal with lighted krashankas. Then you can proceed to other festive Easter dishes. As a rule, many meat dishes are prepared on this day, and starting to eat meat after Strict Lent is called “breaking the fast”. Heavy food should not be abused, since it is on these days that cases of food poisoning are becoming more frequent. It is necessary to observe the measure, since the stomach after fasting may simply not be able to cope with the abundance of goodies.

Where did the tradition of painting eggs for Easter come from?

The exchange of eggs is firmly established in the Easter tradition. The following legend is connected with this symbol: Mary Magdalene decided to bring the joyful news of the resurrection of Jesus to the Roman emperor Tiberius. It was impossible to come to him without gifts, and Maria chose a chicken egg as a gift, symbolizing life. Hearing the news, Tiberius laughed and said: “It is also impossible, like your white egg to turn red” ... but before he could finish the phrase, the egg turned red.

Everyone loves Easter, regardless of the strength of faith. On this festive day, the sun sparkles and plays in a special way, the house smells of baking and goodies, the tables are bursting with treats, the rooms sparkle with cleanliness and delight the eye with festive decorations, relatives exchange gifts, and joy and enlightenment rejoices in everyone’s soul.

Easter: preparation for the holiday, what you need to do

But this joy was preceded by the most difficult week of preparation for Easter - Holy Week.

And difficult, first of all, in the spiritual plan. However, the period of spiritual preparation for Easter coincides with the time of important household chores. Try to attend at least one service, preferably several.

Forget about resentment and irritation. Whatever you do this week, do it with joy in your soul. Therefore, you have to follow your emotions.

Make time for your loved ones and family.

Not only to the closest ones with whom you live together in the same house, but also remember your sisters, brothers, and maybe parents, good old friends. Just give them a call and chat.

Apologize for the insults, and forgive the offenders yourself.

There are unfinished business or unfulfilled promises, think about what can be fixed before the great Easter.

But it is better to refuse stupid communication. And not only because chatting on the phone and correspondence in social networks takes a lot of your time, but in order to stay with yourself for a while, think, comprehend, and pray.

Don't forget good deeds. Take care of other people. And you can help those in need not only with a certain donation or financial support, but also with a kind word, participation, and a smile.

If you set yourself up in a positive mood, it's time to think about how to beautifully prepare for Easter: make new decorations, pick up gifts, prepare an Easter basket and set the festive table.

According to church canons, the name Maundy Thursday has nothing to do with restoring order.

Therefore, you should not go in cycles in the fact that the cleaning in the house needs to be done on this particular day. It is desirable that by Thursday your house is already shining.

Evening. Confession before Easter in the church.

Evening. Getting ready for the Easter service, which starts at 23:30.

It is always much more difficult for working women to make plans. And to give unequivocal advice on how to prepare for Easter with your own hands, in this case it will be incorrect.

In that case, you will have to start preparing in advance, without leaving all the important things for the last week.

10-14 days before Easter

At least two weeks before Easter, you can draw up a menu, write a list of necessary products, think over gifts. Put all plans and lists on paper. This will make it easier to navigate in the future.

At the same time, you can gradually start preparing at home for the holiday. Do not put off for the last week such things as cleaning winter clothes, putting things in order in the kitchen, in papers, in closets.

7-8 days before Easter

Even the windows can be washed and the curtains washed on the Saturday before Palm Sunday.

Make big purchases directly on Saturday or Sunday. Given that it is on weekends that various traveling fairs are held, where you can buy high-quality farm products, without which good pastries simply won’t work: Easter cakes and Easter, it’s better to buy everything these days.

5-6 days before the holiday

On Monday-Tuesday, finish all major cleaning work, and start preparing jewelry and gifts. Think of activities for kids. Let them also make crafts that can be used for home decoration or gifts.

On Tuesday, check if everything is ready for baking Easter cakes. Take out the molds, check the availability of products according to the recipe, check for powder, decorations, baking paper and other little things. Immediately check the availability of ingredients for coloring eggs.

On Wednesday, buy all the missing little things for baking Easter cakes. Be sure to plan a route and make a list so you don't forget anything.

In the evening, wash baking dishes, prepare dried fruits, peel nuts. If you plan to bake Easter cakes on Thursday, soak dried fruits.

Try to finish cleaning the house, especially things that require male help.

On a clean Thursday morning, it is better to start with a shower before dawn. Immediately put the dough for Easter cakes. After work we bake.

And let the family help to finish the cleaning: wipe the dust, vacuum, wash the floors. If there are no assistants, you will have to do the cleaning in between baking.

On Good Friday, it is better not to plan household chores. A good reason to visit the church. Moreover, on this day the Shroud is taken out, and the procession takes place.

And in the evening you can paint the eggs. Some housewives transfer the baking of Easter cakes on this day.

We do cosmetic cleaning in the house and decorate it. It remains to make purchases of perishable products: meat, fish and vegetables, fruits.

We make blanks for holiday dishes and fold the Easter basket. If everything for the Easter basket is ready, you can visit the church to bless the products. But many prefer to attend church directly on Easter.

It doesn't matter in what order you do your homework. Various prohibitions, such as baking Easter cakes on Good Friday or cleaning the house before Maundy Thursday, have no basis.

Do not worry that you do not have time or did not do well enough.

After all, Easter is, first of all, a celebration of the triumph of life over death, compassion over indifference, good over evil.

Therefore, devoting the entire week of preparation for Easter to a marathon of cleaning and cooking is not worth it. It is better to do less things, but keep your peace of mind and good mood.

Believe me, if you don’t have time to wash the windows before Easter this year or cook 2-3 dishes instead of 15, the holiday will come anyway. Learn to live in harmony with your inner world and see the beautiful, believe in miracles and receive spiritual satisfaction from life. After all, this is what the great feast of the Resurrection teaches us.

How to prepare for Easter: video

The video material tells about the great path to the culmination of the Lenten feat - Easter breaking the fast:

The last week before Easter is called Passion Week. These days we remember the suffering that Jesus Christ took for our salvation. This week is the most severe of all Great Lent.

All Passion Week is being prepared for. Starting with chores around the house and ending with preparations for the festive Easter meal.

Maundy Thursday is also called Clean. The husks from the eggs are not thrown away, but belong to the river and are launched into the water. It is believed that this should bring good luck.

Holy Sunday of Christ

Waking up on Sunday, instead of “Good morning”, it is customary for all their relatives and friends to say: “Christ is Risen!” You need to start the day by washing with Thursday water, putting something silver (a spoon or a coin) there. Such washing will bring beauty and prosperity.

And then the Easter feast. It begins with consecrated eggs. You need to take one egg, divide it by the number of people who are at your table. Everyone should eat a small piece. It is believed that this first egg strengthens the family.

Orthodox Easter in 2020 is celebrated on April 19.
