Is it possible to sheathe an osb house from the outside. Wall decoration with osb slabs and roofing work

OSB (Oriented Strand Board) is a modern building material that replaces plywood. Sheathing the walls of a frame house with a slab allows you to increase the functionality of the building and give it an aesthetic appearance. In this article, we will tell you how to carry out internal and external wall cladding, as well as analyze the advantages and disadvantages of OSB boards.

Scope of material

Recently, OSB products have been widely used in various areas, for example:

  • in the production of furniture and containers;
  • for interior decoration of cars and trucks;

In construction, this product cannot be dispensed with. Due to its unique manufacturing technology, the plate does not deform, does not shrink, and also allows you to hide all internal defects. If we consider the use of plates in the context of work, it is used for:

  • Sheathing of the walls of the house, which gives greater protection to the structure from the penetration of moisture, dampness, and also additionally insulates the walls. After sheathing, the product does not require finishing work. Construction of frame-panel structures, OSB increases the moisture resistance of the structure. The board can be used in the construction of reusable formwork.
  • External wall cladding. It is used as a base, and for interior work it serves as a finishing material.
  • Manufacture of lathing, rafters and roofing. The plate is able to withstand any load and the weight of the roof itself.
  • Leveling the flooring or laying it from scratch. This material is an ideal option for obtaining a durable and even floor.

For information! If the OSB product is located outside the building and needs to be painted, difficulties may arise, because. the coating used must reliably protect the product from external factors (wind, precipitation, sunlight).

Types of plates and their characteristics

All products are divided into 4 types, each of which is responsible for its field of application. Types of plates are:

  • OSB-1 - designed for work in conditions of low humidity;
  • OSB-2 - designed for the construction and arrangement of load-bearing structures indoors;
  • OSB-3 - designed for the installation of walls, partitions and durable load-bearing structures;
  • OSB-4 - designed for construction work, accompanied by high loads.

For information! The oriented strand board market consists of 90% of the type OSB 3.

The main characteristics of the plates include:

  • A handy product size that is ideal for a variety of applications, such as covering two spans at the same time.
  • Ease of processing.
  • All products are easily sawn with any tool, and the saw cut is smooth, without cracks and punctures.
  • Strength, the product is able to withstand a large load, hold any type of fastener. The quality of the plate is not inferior to the massive board. Smooth surface.
  • The product does not require additional finishing or processing; after its installation, painting or cladding can be immediately performed.
  • Low cost makes the product popular and in demand.
  • Light weight. The average weight of the plate is 18 kg, which greatly facilitates the task of its delivery and skidding.

Advantages and disadvantages of the product

The main advantages of the material include the following:

  • High strength: modulus elasticity, bending tear resistance.
  • Moisture resistance due to special resin impregnation, which makes the plate hardy to rain and snow.
  • They absorb noise well. Due to the chips and resin, a high density is formed, which eliminates extraneous sounds.
  • Light weight. The product can weigh from 15 to 40 kg.
  • Easy to install. The product is easy to attach and cut with absolutely any tool.
  • Environmentally friendly. The production technology uses the allowable amount of wax and resins, each product has a special Eco label.

Of the shortcomings, only one can be noted - the use of low-quality resins containing a large amount of formaldehyde, which can evaporate and harm human health. But it is absolutely safe to use such plates for the outer cladding of a building.

External finishing of the building

The external cladding of the walls of a frame house requires compliance with certain rules that follow from the characteristics of the products. For outdoor work, products with a thickness of at least 11 mm are used. The work process is divided into stages:

  • OSV plate is attached to the rack in such a way that the joint is located in the middle.
  • There must be a gap of at least 3 mm between the plates.
  • The bottom trim must be covered with a sheet.
  • With a two-story building, the sheet must necessarily go to the rack of two floors, this will give greater rigidity to the structure.
  • Sheathing of window openings is performed as a whole sheet, which allows you to move all joints to adjacent racks. Window openings are simply carefully cut out.
  • For fastening, it is best to use spiral nails or self-tapping screws.

It is worth noting that when sheathing a frame house from the outside, experts follow certain rules:

  • fixation of plates in intermediate sections is fixed at a distance of 300 mm; the joints of the plates are fixed every 150 mm;
  • for every 100 mm, the outer side is flashed;
  • to prevent splitting of the material, fasteners must be placed at a distance of 1 cm from the edge of the product;
  • the slab should be fixed both in a horizontal and vertical position, this will give greater strength and reliability to the building.

Interior decoration of the building

Sheathing a frame house inside OSB with slabs practically does not differ from drywall. The only thing is that when fixing the plates, it is necessary to use strong fasteners, because. slab weighs more than drywall. For installation, a wooden frame and 50 mm self-tapping screws are used. After fixing the products, they can be sanded and primed.

For information! The slabs can be laid as a floor covering, to obtain a durable coating it is necessary to place the panels perpendicular to the joists.

In addition to priming and painting, products can be processed with absolutely any facing material.

  • Varnish. The technology of use is the same as for flooring.
  • Dye. Water-based paints and varnishes are ideal, because. they are best able to pass steam and provide a good indoor climate. As a rule, paints for ordinary wood are used.

Important! The use of water-based paints and varnishes will lead to deformation of the plate.

  • Wallpaper is glued only after careful priming of the surface, using wallpaper glue with the addition of PVA.
  • Plaster. Sheets can be plastered, for this they use a mixture for interior work.

Sheathing an OSB house with a product is an optimal and inexpensive option for a building material that can improve performance and improve the appearance of a building.

Before talking about the technical details and intricacies of the inner lining of OSB or OSB boards (they are also OSB, OSB sheets), it is worth considering the appropriateness of this event. Installation of OSB boards indoors takes place in two cases, namely:

  1. If you have a frame house and the frame has not yet been sheathed.
  2. If the pattern and texture of OSB boards are an element of decor.

If you just need to level the walls, then drywall is better suited for this purpose, as it is cheaper and more convenient to work with during installation and further finishing.

The technologies for the outer skin of the house are set out in the article:. Here we consider the issue of proper installation of OSB boards on the walls inside the house.

The choice of plates for mounting OSB on the walls inside the house

When using any material inside the house, including OSB boards, attention should be paid to its harmlessness to the health of the inhabitants of this house. Already 34 years have passed since the appearance of OSB boards and all these years the debate about the environmental friendliness of OSB boards has not stopped. In fact, there are grounds for these disputes, since indeed, when gluing wood chips, polymer resins containing formaldehyde are used. But formaldehyde is also found in many other surrounding things, for example, in fabrics in chipboard furniture, combustion products, etc.

OSB slabs on the walls inside the house.

In order to exclude formaldehyde poisoning of people, enlightened Europeans established control over the production of OSB boards and divided the harmfulness of boards into classes. Plates with formaldehyde emission class E1 are harmless to human health and are used in the construction of residential buildings. Therefore, when buying OSB panels, choose a reliable and trusted manufacturer, as your health may depend on it. Better than any words about the environmental friendliness of OSB panels will say the Austrian four-star hotel Arlmont, the interior decoration of which is replete with OSB panels.

Arlmont Hotel, OSB sheets used in the interior.

OSB boards are divided into classes according to water resistance:

OSB-1 is the class of board most exposed to moisture and has the lowest strength. Such boards are used for the production of furniture.

OSB-2 is a class of boards with the same moisture resistance as OSB-1, but more durable. Such plates can be used for wall cladding in dry rooms.

OSB-3 - moisture resistant boards with high strength. They are suitable for installation in damp rooms. But with prolonged contact with water, they deform.

OSB-4 - boards with maximum moisture resistance. They are able to withstand prolonged contact with water.

OSB4 boards do not have wide popularity due to their price, which is on average twice as high as that of OSB3 boards. Therefore, OSB3 boards are widely used. If they are treated with a primer or painted with paint, then such plates become resistant to prolonged contact with water.

More details about the various characteristics of OSB sheets can be found in the article:.

Sheathing the walls of a frame house from the inside

Before proceeding with the interior cladding of a frame house, it is necessary to insulate the walls, close the frame from the outside and the insulation with a vapor barrier.

It is recommended to insulate the walls with mineral wool, and it is better to use slab wool, since it is easier to work with than with expanded polystyrene, it holds better in vertical structures and does not settle down, which happens with fiberglass insulation. Other heaters are not excluded and are also suitable for insulating the walls of a frame house. For more information on various heaters, see the article:.

After the walls are insulated, they must be closed with a vapor barrier. The vapor barrier membrane protects the wall from the penetration of moisture into it, which will keep the frame of the house and the insulation dry. The vapor barrier is fastened with a conventional construction stapler, with an overlap of 10-15 cm and glued together with a special double-sided adhesive tape.

An example of the construction of the wall of a frame house. From the inside, a vapor barrier film is laid on the frame, OSB boards are attached on top of it.

The sheathing itself is made as follows, the sheets are alternately screwed to the frame of the house one after another. The gap between the sheets is 3 mm. Sheets are screwed with wood screws 35-40 mm long. All holes (for windows, doors, mounting holes) are cut with a jigsaw.

Decorative wall cladding with OSB boards and battens

As a crate, it is best to use a metal profile as for drywall. It is easy to install and does not warp like wood. When choosing wooden bars for battens, it is better to use dried wood bars, because such bars bend and twist less when they dry out. The installation technologies in both cases are not fundamentally different, so we will consider them using the example of a crate made of metal profiles.

In order to sheathe the interior walls with OSB boards, you need to start by installing the sheathing on the walls of the room.

The technology for mounting the crate looks like this:

1. First you need to install the starting profile, which is mounted on the adjacent walls, floor and ceiling as in Figure 1. On the sides, the profile must stand strictly vertically and close along the perimeter with the upper and lower profile.

Figure 1. The start profile is mounted to the adjacent wall. And closes with the top and bottom profile.

2. After installing the starting profile, it is necessary to make markings on the wall for suspensions. Since the hangers will hold the vertical posts of the crate, you need to mark it in such a way that two solid OSB sheets meet in the middle of the profile, you also need to install one profile in the center of each solid OSB sheet.

Hangers are attached to the wall. A crate is attached to them.

3. We mount the profile. When fixing the profile on hangers, it is important to control the plane of the lathing with the rule so that “pits” or “belly” do not form on the wall in the future.

Installation of OSB boards on an internal wall using a crate.

Today, OSB panels are so popular that they are often used in repair and construction for both interior and exterior decoration. Of course, with the right approach, it is even possible to paint OSB, or plaster on OSB, wallpaper stickers, but all this is not very reliable, and as a result it will turn out even costly. If you try hard, you can even lay tiles on this material, but how long it all lasts can depend on many factors, and for outdoor work such a finish is not applicable at all.

Therefore, many are wondering how to sheathe OSB from the outside so that it serves for a long time, does not succumb to decay, and it was not expensive. In our instructions, you will learn this, get acquainted with the necessary tools, and most importantly, how to do it all correctly.

How to sheathe osb outside the house

If your house facade is made of OSB, it is absolutely impossible to leave it like that. After all, atmospheric phenomena - rain, snow, temperature changes will very quickly make the material unusable. Therefore, if the OSB is correctly laid, which means that at least 3 mm seams are left, and the OSB itself is impregnated on all sides with a good antiseptic impregnation. You can already come close to the question of how to sheathe OSB outside the house.

Siding.

This is most likely the cheapest and fastest option for sheathing OSB panels outside the house. A wide variety of this material - which can imitate timber, board, wild stone, brick, slate and much more. And the ease of its installation allows you to even independently sheathe OSB outside the house.

The choice can only fall on him because of his positive characteristics:

  • The siding is easy to install.
  • He does not need additional processing - painting, impregnation, etc.
  • The material does not require special care.
  • Does not change color in direct sunlight.
  • Easily withstands both plus and minus temperatures.
  • Long service life.
  • The material is fire safe and environmentally friendly.

And this may not even be all of its positive aspects.

But let's start with the installation. To sheathe OSB outside with siding, you must first fix the slats on the house. This additional step seems redundant, because at first glance, vinyl panels can easily be fixed to the OSB without a grate. But we assure you strictly that this is not to be done.

The siding should be attached only to the crate so that there is a space of 2-3 centimeters between it and the OSB. This will allow not only your wall to breathe, but also moisture to go outside.

Those who have not used the correct method of installing siding regret it very much, in just a year or two, the wall under the siding begins to rot and grow mold. And you have to remove everything, repair the wall and then re-attach the cladding but already on the crate.

Wooden slats that are mounted vertically on the wall are ideal for crates. If you are not going to insulate the walls, then their thickness should be in the range of two, three centimeters - the ideal size of the rails should be 60x30mm or 60x40mm. To fix such a crate in the OSB panel (which is also called the slats of a ventilated facade) is simpler, simpler, for this, self-tapping screws of the appropriate length are used. A good screwdriver will help to do this job without much effort. Of course, if you tighten the screws with an ordinary screwdriver, then you will simply suffer and spend a lot of time.

If you don’t have a screwdriver, be sure to buy it, you don’t even need to take the expensive battery version of the tool. You can also purchase a network-powered tool; such a tool will come in handy more than once on the farm.

The distance between the rails depends on the type of siding, but in most cases 60 centimeters will do.

Do not forget to treat the crate with an antiseptic before installation, this will extend the service life and the screws will hold tighter.

Siding installation always begins with finishing the outer and inner corners of the building.

For reliable fastening, strips of silicone sealant are applied, and then the elements are installed and screwed to the crate.

Self-tapping screws must be screwed in the middle of the oblong mounting holes.

When all the corners are mounted, we need to install the starting profile. It is attached at the very bottom, and we first need to determine its size so that it fits freely between the corner elements. It is easiest to cut off in the right place with a grinder.

When the lower profile and the siding itself are attached, the self-tapping screws also need to be screwed in the middle of the oblong holes, only they should not be clamped to the end. This is done so that in the process of changing temperatures, the material may shift slightly, and in this case, a screw that is not tightly screwed allows it to do this.

At the end of the installation of each element, you must check whether the siding element can move, whether any tightly screwed screws interfere with it.

Their installation is very simple:

  • measure the material you want
  • using scissors with a straight cut or a grinder, cut off the desired pieces.
  • fasten to the crate with a screwdriver and self-tapping screws in the right place.

When this procedure is completed, you need to close the frontal board, for this you can use a metal chamfer or J-profile.

Even before installing the main siding panels, you need to finish the door and window openings. For this, a window profile is used.

Only after that you can already sheathe the house with the main sheets of siding. If you choose the right material, and do everything according to the instructions, your house will undoubtedly shine with beauty.

Other OSB sheathing options outside the house

Of course, you can sheathe OSB outside the house not only with siding, but it is the most common and economical option.

Since OSB is afraid of moisture, it is best for you to choose options from ventilated facades (ventilated facade), they allow the wall to always remain dry.

Sheathing OSB outside the house, even with your own hands, can be done with ventilation facades, their installation is not very difficult, but the cost can bite. Beautiful finishes are obtained under the brick.

It can also be a stone or granite facade.

How to sheathe osb inside the house

If simple finishing options do not suit you - varnish, paint, plaster, wallpaper, then you can approach this issue creatively and sheathe OSB inside the house plastic or wooden lining. Undoubtedly, this material is quickly mounted and creates a beautiful design of rooms.

But no matter how you finish the OSB panels, the surface should be carefully prepared. If you will sheathe the panels with clapboard, then you just need to walk with an antiseptic. This will protect the material from various fungi and mold.

They also don't look bad cork wallpaper in the interior, but unfortunately they are expensive.

wall decoration timber imitation inside the house is also not a bad option. Fastens quickly, creates the impression of a wooden house. And since in fact it is a natural tree, the effect will be significant - you will even feel the natural smell of this material.

If you are third-party natural, then you can trim and blockhouse inside the house, it will also look good. Of course, one room is not finished with such materials, this option is only suitable for the whole house.

You can also sheathe the walls artificial stone. A rather inexpensive material - it is made of gypsum, to save money, such material can be made by yourself.

Well, if you want to get classic walls, the right option is to sheathe OSB with drywall, and only then plaster and paint.

As you can see, OSB can be sheathed inside the house with various materials, the main thing is to approach this issue creatively.

Oriented strand board is a fairly popular building material that is most often used to level the surface of walls and build interior partitions.

However, there is an opinion that these multifunctional units do not always meet the established environmental requirements.

The harmfulness of OSB for interior decoration is due to the presence of various resins used in the production process.

But do they really pose a risk to human health?

Slabs for interior decoration are made from small components of industrial trees. To do this, large planed chips are glued with resins of various modifications, adding synthetic wax and other chemicals for strength.

Each next layer of wood shavings is laid perpendicular to the previous one, so OSB is recognized as a fairly strong building and repair material.

After laying, the workpiece is pressed under strong pressure and high temperature, which provides the tile blocks with the following properties:

  • Ease of processing;
  • Resistance to moisture and temperature extremes;
  • High retention rate of fasteners;
  • Absence of knots, voids, delaminations and other defects;
  • Protection against damage by insects and fungus.
  • Durability, combined with the lightness of the material, which makes it easy to work with.

Formaldehyde and other toxic substances

If only natural resins or a small amount of chemicals are used as binders in the manufacture of boards, then the harmfulness of the OSB board to is virtually zero.

But since natural materials are always very expensive, in order to reduce the cost of blocks, an adhesive mixture of formaldehyde, methanol, phenol and other toxic components that are unsafe for health is often used.

The presence of their vapors in the air can cause such problems:

  • Allergic reactions and persistent headaches;
  • Disease of the skin and nervous system;
  • Nasopharyngeal cancer, negative processes in the liver, thyroid gland, spleen and other parenchymal organs;
  • Changes in the work of the genitourinary system, respiratory tract and eyes;
  • Decreased reproductive function;
  • Violation of metabolic processes and a drop in immunity.

The danger of OSB influence lies in the fact that toxic substances settle on wood particles and are regularly released into the room. Once in the human body, formaldehyde eventually turns into formic acid and methanol, concentrating in brain cells.

That is why the use of OSB containing toxic substances is strictly prohibited in many European countries.

At the same time, the admissible threshold for the perception of formaldehyde in the range of 0.07-0.4 mg/m3 has been established on the territory of the SND. Therefore, when choosing this kind of material, it is necessary to take an interest in its qualitative characteristics.

How to secure the interior?

OSB emits formaldehyde fumes especially intensively during the first six months after installation. In the future, the negative impact on the body may weaken. But in order to protect yourself with guarantee, you need to additionally process the entire surface of the plates used.

A detoxifying primer is used as a protective layer. Alkyd or water-dispersion paint, varnish, wax compositions, laminating film, which is used for MDF panels, are also suitable for these purposes.

Experts also advise not to lose sight of the ends, which are enough to cover with edge tape. It seals the surface of the plates well, minimizing toxic fumes, ordinary puttying and pasting the walls with thick wallpaper.

The degree of harmfulness of the OSB board can be significantly reduced if, during interior decoration, this material is used exclusively for rough work.

However, if even if all operating standards are observed, the purchase of plates causes some concern, then it is better to look for blocks made using only natural resins. They are much more expensive, but they are considered environmentally friendly material.

The category of similar products also includes cement-bonded particle boards, where mineral mixtures are used as a binder.

Simple Rules

When installing plates, it is almost impossible to avoid the accumulation of formaldehyde and similar substances in the air. But this problem is easily solved with the help of careful ventilation of the room.

Daily airing and damp cleaning will also help mitigate the potential harm from fumes. For reliability, you can also install a supply and exhaust system.

The rate of elimination of toxins is affected by high air temperature, so the thermal regime in the room where there is OSB should not exceed 30 degrees. An increase in this indicator for every 5 points automatically doubles the quantitative content of harmful fumes in the air.

Formaldehyde is highly soluble in water, so when the humidity level rises to 70 percent, potentially hazardous substances are released 40 percent more intensively.

You can also clean the air from accumulated fumes with the help of indoor flowers. According to experts, dieffenbachia, familiar to many housewives, perfectly copes with this work.

How to paint OSB board on the facade

The technology of frame housing construction allows you to build comfortable housing quickly and inexpensively. The external walls of such a building are sheathed with OSB boards, which, unfortunately for all developers, do not have the aesthetic appeal required for the facade. Therefore, it is necessary to purchase material for facing the house, which leads to an increase in the cost of construction.

Manufacturers of paints and varnishes have taken into account the need of developers for finishing OSB boards and offer their own solutions to this issue. The masters who can create masterpieces from any material did not stand aside. Thanks to these folk craftsmen, creative solutions for the exterior decoration of a frame house appeared.

Oriented strand board (OSB) consists of several layers of pressed and glued wood chips and shavings. A feature of the manufacturing technology of these types of panels is that the chips in the layers are located in different directions. This provides the material with high bending strength and allows you to securely hold fasteners. On the outer layers of the panel, the chips are located along the surface, on the inner - across.

But despite the longitudinal direction of the wood component, the front side of the panel does not have the smoothness necessary for high-quality staining. Both sides of the OSB board are uneven and rough. This feature has its pros and cons. The advantage is that the lack of smoothness allows you to get a surface with a spectacular texture. The disadvantage is the need for additional processing of the plate with various tools and materials.

The market offers several brands of oriented strand panels: OSB-1, OSB-2, OSB-3 and OSB-4. The latter are intended for facial finishing and have a fairly even and spectacular surface. But in the construction of frame houses, OSB-3 is most often used, since they are cheaper and have all the necessary characteristics for building walls. However, the surface of OSB-3 boards needs to be improved.

OSB - oriented strand board

Since this material is the most popular among developers, all the finishing methods proposed below take into account the surface features of these panels and can be applied to products of other brands: OSB-1 and OSB-2.

The choice of staining method for OSB boards

Transparent coatings

Staining is the most inexpensive way to give the panels an aesthetic appeal. Many developers like the texture of the slabs, which they would like to keep. The irregularities of the surface of the panels during the fall of the sun's rays create a certain play of light and shadow. It is this effect that is most attractive in untreated OSB.

In order to preserve and enhance it, use a transparent paint with an ultraviolet filter. For example, Cetol Filter 7 Plus. This composition is intended for exterior wood finishing and is based on alkyd resins. The coating has a transparency and a semi-matte shade. The composition of the paint includes a UV stabilizer and water repellents that provide reliable protection of wood from environmental influences.

  • transparent varnishes;
  • azure;
  • transparent impregnation for wood.

Glazes are the most spectacular, as they have the ability to emphasize the pattern of wood and give the painted surface a stylish shade and silky sheen. A wide choice of these compositions is offered by the manufacturer BELINKA, in whose assortment the Topazur line, which includes 66 colors and shades.

Transparent varnishes for wood will give the surface of the plate a gloss. Oil, water or organic based formulations can be used. Acrylic varnish will reliably protect the wood, and yacht varnish will give it a beautiful shade. An inexpensive and practical solution is a semi-matte transparent "Drevolak", designed to cover raw wood and bricks. This composition is easily applied to the OSB and fills all its irregularities.

To emphasize the texture of OSB, you can use stain. To obtain the desired shade, it is diluted either with water, or with a solvent or acetone.

The technique for staining OSB with stain is as follows:

  • apply paint with a paint brush or spray gun;
  • give time for drying (when diluting the stain with a solvent or acetone, the drying time is 5-7 minutes);
  • apply polyurethane primer on a dry painted surface and wait for it to dry.

To obtain the effect of artificial aging, a patina of the desired color is used. After it dries, the plate is polished with a soft foam rubber sponge, which allows you to remove the remnants of the patina. After that, the patinated panel is covered with a transparent varnish.

Covering enamels

In order to completely hide the protrusions of the chips, dense covering enamels and water-soluble paints are used. The choice is wide:

  • silicone;
  • alkyd;
  • pentaphthalic (forming a dense smooth film);
  • acrylic (water soluble);
  • latex.

Oil paints have the highest viscosity. Their advantage is that they are practically not absorbed into the slab. Therefore, the consumption of paint is relatively low. The disadvantage of these compositions is considered a long drying time. But they have the main advantage: a strong covering layer and good adhesion to the surface, which is important when painting OSB. However, oil paints are not recommended for outdoor use due to their instability to moisture and ultraviolet radiation.

Alkyd paints meet all requirements for painting facades. These compounds form a thin polymer film on the treated surfaces, which is moisture resistant and does not change its color under the influence of sunlight. Alkyd enamels are able to withstand significant temperature changes, therefore they are recommended for use in regions with any climate.

silicone paints are among the most expensive. This is the main reason for their low popularity. This is despite the fact that silicone enamels fully comply with all the requirements of facade work. These paints have good resistance to mechanical stress, crack resistance and water repellency. These compounds can be applied to the OSB board, which has previously been painted or whitewashed.

latex paints have high moisture resistance, therefore they are the best choice for regions with a maritime climate. Due to their excellent covering ability, they are not demanding on the quality of surfaces, which is especially important when finishing OSB boards. Facade latex paints are able to withstand a significant number of freeze-thaw cycles.

The best choice for coloring OSB - acrylic facade paints. They are inexpensive and have a lot of advantages: moisture resistant, withstanding sudden changes in temperature, vapor permeable, resistant to UV rays (they do not fade under the sun). Acrylic paints can be applied at any time of the year. But in winter, the air temperature should not be lower than -20 ° C.

Fire bioprotection of OSB boards

The OSB board burns with the release of caustic substances, including toxic hydrocyanic acid. In the event of a fire, it is smoke that is the decisive factor in survival. Using Soppka paints, you can solve two important tasks at once: paint the panel and increase its fire resistance several times over.

Soppka - experts in OSB protection

Soppka compositions and paints are designed specifically for finishing oriented strand boards, so the manufacturer takes into account all the features of the surfaces of this material. The company's products have excellent adhesion to OSB, which cannot be said about other flame retardants. The service life of Soppka coatings is more than 15 years. Paints are able to withstand any environmental influences.

Output

OSB can be painted with any high-quality facade paint intended for fire and biological protection of wooden surfaces. Good reviews about "Valtti Color Satin" from "Tikurilla". This enamel has an excellent covering ability, does not change its color under the influence of sunlight, prevents wood decay, has a noble matte shade.

If it is decided to give the OSB surface perfect smoothness, additional processing will be required, including grinding, priming, impregnation with an antiseptic. All these points have many nuances that you need to know about to get the desired result. Therefore, the coloring of OSB boards is best considered on specific examples of the use of various finishes for these panels.

Preparation of OSB boards for painting

Before painting, prepare oriented strand panels. First of all, they need to be primed. This is not as simple a task as it might seem at first glance. The fact is that the front surface of the new plates is smooth and rather slippery, so the primer will collect into drops and flow down. For this reason, experts recommend not wasting time and money on priming new slabs, but immediately proceed to puttying or painting them.

Panels that have stood in the open air for some time lose the smoothness of their front side. The surface becomes rough and able to absorb the primer. The composition is applied with a roller on a long handle. The best choice is the Ceresit ST17 primer, the quality of which has been tested by time.

Technique for painting OSB boards

When applying the paint with a brush or roller, you may notice that some chips swell with moisture and rise. This occurs regardless of the type of composition selected. If you need a budget solution for finishing the facade, you can ignore these small flaws.

But if there is an intention to do all the work with the highest possible quality, you need to adhere to the following technique:

  • panel priming;
  • installation of fiberglass mesh over the entire area of the facade;
  • puttying with a moisture-resistant and frost-resistant composition;
  • staining.

When choosing elastic paints (for example, Descartes or Emark), the puttying step can be skipped. These paints will perfectly lay down on the grid and close it. After applying the second layer, OSB will acquire a smooth glossy surface.

OSB staining with the effect of artificial aging

This method of processing OSB panels allows you to preserve the texture of the surface while smoothing the most noticeable chip protrusions. In the end, a smooth slab is obtained, on which its natural pattern is clearly visible. With the help of multi-layer staining with compositions of different colors and purposes, they provide two stylish effects at once: color staining and artificial aging.

Tools and materials that will be required to complete the work.

Step 1. Sanding the panel.

The unevenness of the panel surface is smoothed using a grinder and a P180 grinding wheel. To obtain the desired result, work with a slight pressure of the tool. Each section of the panel is passed with an abrasive wheel no more than three times.

Step 2. Applying the first coat of primer.

OSB boards are made using a special adhesive impregnation, which includes various resins, wax and paraffin. These substances are necessary to prevent delamination of the panel and the formation of rot and mold in it.

The primer of the polished OSB surface is needed so that the resins and paraffin remain inside the slab in the future. At this stage of the work, a barrier primer FI M194 is used. It is applied with an airbrush or spray gun. Material consumption within 50-60 g/m2. Further work is started in 1.5-2 hours, after the soil has completely dried.

Step 3. Application of pigment primer.

At this stage of the work, cover the panel with a primer FL M042/CO2. This is a composition of white matte color, drying within 2.5-3 hours. Soil consumption should be at least 100 g/m2.

Step 4. Sanding the plate.

Use a grinder with an abrasive wheel P320. Remove only the top layer of pigment soil. You should get a smooth whitish matte surface.

Step 5 Varnishing the plate.

Acrylic lacquer "Mother of Pearl" JW M120 is applied to OSB in such a way that the weight of the wet layer is 100-120 g/m2. In order to achieve this result, each section of the panel must be covered with 2-3 layers of varnish. After that, within an hour, they wait for the complete drying of the coating.

Step 6. Patination.

At this stage of the work, the black patina GM M048 is applied to the panel. As before, an airbrush or spray gun is used for this purpose. The weight of the wet layer should be 60-80 g/m2. There should be no gaps in the previous white layer on the panel. Patina dries within 5-7 minutes.

Step 7. Sanding on the patina.

With light pressure, the panel is sanded with an abrasive sponge P320. After such processing, a surface with a clear chip pattern should be obtained, the main part of which is white, and the gaps between the chips are black. This provides the effect of artificial aging.

Step 8. Tinting the OSB board.

Tinting is the stage in which the plate acquires color. Acrylic lacquer is used for this task. The color is chosen depending on how they want to see the facade of their house. Varnish consumption within 100-120 g/m2. Drying time according to the manufacturer's instructions, but on average, 1.5-2 hours.

It should be noted that in the process of drying the varnish, its color will change due to the gradual acquisition of haze. In this example, JO 00M294 zero gloss varnish is used. If you want to give the facade of your house a gloss, you can opt for compounds that provide this effect.

OSB staining technology with primer-paint

This method of coloring oriented strand boards was developed by Holzer specifically for finishing facades of frame buildings. Therefore, in the instructions proposed by the manufacturer, only its products are used.
