How to install and adjust the door closer for automatic closing. Installing a door closer yourself is easy! Mount the door closer

Entrance doors in private homes and organizations are recommended to be equipped with door closers. But these devices, which allow you to conveniently use the door, are quite diverse. You need to choose and put them especially carefully.

Features of choosing a door closer

The closer, both on the inside and on the outside of the door, must provide automatic cover for the leaf. The simplest type of device is oil, which works by moving fluid under spring pressure. When the door is opened, the spring is compressed. As soon as the handle is released, it will open and smoothly close the sash.

But the simplest devices are now used very rarely. More modern designs are often based on a rack and pinion. This type of force transfer provides the most smooth movement of the spring. However, it cannot be applied to devices with sliding channels. In the cam system, energy must be transmitted by a special cam made of a steel profile similar in shape to a heart.

By changing the profile, a certain compression intensity is achieved. This ensures that the sash closes conveniently. When choosing a closer for a street door, you should first of all think about the moment of inertia. This indicator, directly related to the weight and width of the door body, is reflected in the EN 1154 standard. Products classified as EN1 are only able to serve an interior door, and the lightest one.

If it is necessary to install the door closer on a steel entrance structure, then compliance with the EN7 class is mandatory. Important: along with closers of a strictly defined level, there are also adjustable elements. Their marking begins with the smallest closing force, and the highest level is indicated through a hyphen. Full information on this subject can be obtained in the tables given in the technical documentation.

It is also very important how exactly the moment of rotation is transmitted. If a lever is used for this purpose, then it is made from a pair of connected axles. When the sash opens, these axles bend in a certain place. By itself, such a device is quite durable and can last a long time. But the fully open mechanism is very easily damaged by hooligans.

Sliding channel systems are characterized by the fact that the free end of the lever moves along a special recess. Getting to the lever itself is problematic, which complicates the actions of vandals. But it takes more effort to open doors. To somewhat compensate for the difficulties in moving, the use of a cam transmission device helps. It is he who allows the most efficient transmission of kinetic energy.

Floor structures, as their name clearly indicates, are placed in the floor. It is almost impossible for those who want to break something to get to such elements. If the sash opens in two directions, it will be placed on the closer spindle. If only in one - the device is located near the canvas. It is these types of door closers that are widely used on the doors of shops and similar institutions.

The frame device in its action differs little from the floor one. However, the place of attachment is already different. As for mounting options, there are known overhead scheme and three hidden versions. The closer can hide:

  • in the floor;
  • in a frame;
  • in the door leaf.

On a plastic door, as well as on a wooden one, it is usually required to choose relatively weak closers. But if the design is large, and the sash is therefore heavy, you will have to install a more powerful device. Important: when the opening force is insufficient, it is recommended to mount two units. The main thing is that their action is fully synchronized. The speed with which the device closes the door is not standardized by standards and there are not even strict numbers yet.

It is necessary to observe how quickly the canvas closes completely. On the fire door, the closing should take place as quickly as possible so that the inhalation of smoke and the spread of fire are difficult. And the lowest possible speed is required where there is:

  • Small children;
  • aged people;
  • those who are poorly oriented in the surrounding reality (disabled and seriously ill);
  • pets.

The slam rate characterizes how quickly the canvas will pass the last section of its path when closing. This parameter is taken into account only when a snap-type lock is installed. But since it is not always known where it will be placed, it is better to familiarize yourself with this indicator when buying a door closer. In public places, in contrast to a private house, the slow opening function is significant. Sooner or later, individual visitors will try to open the door too hard - and then braking with the closer will prevent the canvas from hitting the wall.

Stopping the sash in the open position is important mainly in medical and other similar organizations. When carrying a stretcher, there is no need to somehow support the canvas additionally. Sometimes warehouses are also interested in a similar function. There, too, there is a need to bring in or take out heavy and uncomfortable loads without any problems. An alternative solution is often a delayed closing door.

If the closer is placed on the front door, then in most regions of Russia it must be thermally stable (that is, designed for temperatures from -35 to 70 degrees). Only in the coldest places does it make sense to buy frost-resistant structures that can work at -45 degrees. Inside the premises, ordinary closers are installed, which cannot operate at temperatures below -10 and above + 40. The temperature range is determined by the type of oil inside the mechanism.

In addition to thermal characteristics, it is necessary to take into account the direction in which the door will open. The closer can move it to the left, to the right or in both directions. It is recommended to choose universal designs most often, especially since they can be reconfigured if the opening course of the canvas suddenly changes. Differences can also be related to the assembly type of the device. Completely sealed devices are relatively inexpensive - but if oil leaks out of them or another defect occurs, it makes no sense to remember about repairs.

It is recommended to always find out what the resource of a particular block is. Reputable manufacturers supply closers that can survive millions of door closures. But, of course, such technical perfection is fully paid by the consumer. Another point, which is partly related to the previous one, is the warranty. For those companies that give a guarantee of less than 12 months, there is no point in buying door closers.

Other parameters are closely related to the type of installed door. So, if it is interior and made entirely of PVC, there are enough closers designed for the EN1 force. Fully glazed structures are already equipped with products according to EN2. And if a canvas is chosen from a solid array of wood, you need a 4th or 5th class. For your information: it is not recommended to install excessively powerful devices - this will lead to accelerated wear of the loops and make life much more difficult.

Floor closers are mainly placed on the aluminum arched door. In this case, the response circuits are mounted in the threshold. Closers for the closet door are usually special top rollers. They replace standard roller assemblies. Note: there is no need to change the lower rollers.

Stages of installation of the structure on the door

We develop a scheme

Most often, it becomes necessary to install door closers on external doors. Usually the scheme is thought out in such a way that the case is in the room. But for models with increased resistance to cold, this is not important. In the diagram, it should be noted what diameter of fasteners will be required. This will allow you to more accurately select the closer itself and the drills for its installation. If necessary, you should consult with professionals. When the door opens towards the closer, the body is placed on the canvas. But the lever complex is located on the frame. A different approach is required if the door is to be opened outward from the leading node. Then the blocks are swapped. The sliding channel will have to be placed on the door body, and the main part of the device on the jamb.

Choosing mounting options

When installing an overhead door closer, perform the following actions:

  • determination of mounting position;
  • choice of external (option - internal) location;
  • determining the directions where the device should open the door;
  • attaching the wiring diagram that accompanies each officially supplied product to the canvas and jamb.

At the last step, mark where the holes will be made. You can make neat notes even through a paper sheet. The necessary holes for fasteners are drilled with a drill. The template always contains the full set of installation methods. It shows whether the closer will be placed on the right or left door, whether it will swing inward or outward.

Additionally, according to the template, they will find out on the doors of which categories a door closer can be placed. They also show in which cases you can change the attachment points. Highlighting each option with a color or dotted line will help not to get confused. Important: if the door is made of aluminum or thin steel, you will have to install special fasteners - the so-called bonks. They help to avoid damage to the material where they are attached.

When the marks are completed using the diagram and template, the closer body and lever or bar are fixed on the canvas (box) with self-tapping screws. The second segment of the lever is fixed on the body. After that, you can already connect the lever, forming a kind of "knee". But not always such a solution allows you to complete the task. Alternative approaches are needed when working with a wicket or an unusual looking door.

In this situation, sometimes schemes are chosen with parallel installation on a plate or with mounting brackets. The role of the corners is to help if it is not possible to fix the lever on the surface of the box. In some cases, closers bodies are placed on a corner element placed above the upper slope. In this case, the levers are pressed against the canvas. In another embodiment, a plate is placed on the door, leading it beyond the upper edge.

Then the case is already fixed on this plate. The lever in this embodiment is usually placed on the door frame. To maximize the slope area, the body is attached to the canvas in the usual way. Next, the lever is attached to the mounting plate. There is another way: with it, the plate is placed on the box, the body is mounted, and the lever element is fixed on the canvas.

How to install: step by step guide

But just choosing one or another approach to mounting the door closer is not enough. It is necessary to follow a strict sequence of work. To do everything right with your own hands, the template is attached to the canvas with a thin adhesive tape. Then they take a center punch and mark the midpoints of the holes. Now you can put the case using standard fasteners. The installation accuracy is determined by looking at the location of the adjusting screws. Next comes the turn to mount the lever system. Standard rules stipulate that it needs to be fixed on the side opposite from the door. In some cases, the connection system is supplied already assembled. Then, for the duration of the work, the hinge is pulled out - it is only necessary then to put it in its place.

Now we need to fix the non-adjustable segment - the knee. To hang it in the air in a precisely designated place, a closer axis is used. Fixation is made with a nut, twisted with a key. Important: when the closer is mounted to eliminate noise, the knee is fixed according to the instructions in only one way - at an angle of 90 degrees to the door. In this case, the lever is placed at the same angle to the canvas, and the parts need to be connected only after the door is completely closed.

Otherwise, they act when in the first place there is a reinforced clamping of the web. In this case, the canvas itself is supplied with a seal or a latch, and a rigid lever is mounted at an angle of 90 degrees to the door. The knee is made adjustable, but it is imperative that its length allows the mechanism to work normally. This approach will help increase the speed of the final swoop. Finish the installation by connecting the two segments with a hinge.

Many probably remember the various ingenious devices that were used to completely and tightly close the doors. What was not thought out for this!

These are simple springs, and entire counterweight systems with blocks and cables, and even parts of old tires and rubber bands.

Today the problem is solved much easier and more efficiently.. A special door closer has been developed and successfully used for a long time.

The device can have a variety of designs, they are presented on the market in many different models. However, buying such a device is not enough - it still needs to be mounted. You can turn to the services of specialists, or you can try to figure it out and do it yourself.

What is a bringer?

Closer internal working mechanism- this is a spring that compresses when the door is opened, a cam mechanism or a gear with a rack and pinion. Closers that are purchased complete with a digital lock often use the second type of mechanism, which is characterized by increased force at the very end of closing: this is necessary to securely lock the lock. Cam mechanisms are usually used in rack and pinion closers, they provide smoother closing.

Installing a door closer

The door closer is selected according to the weight and width of the door, guided by a special standard table. For example, if a door weighs twenty kilograms and has a width of 75 cm, the EN-1 class mechanism is enough for the mechanism, with EN-2 for 40 kg and 85 cm, then similarly. In the passport of the device its class is indicated.

Standard installation options

The overhead door closer can be installed outside or inside the room. In the case of interior doors, the standard installation method is preferred. From the opening side, a closer body is mounted on the door, and a bar with a shoe is mounted on the door frame.

  1. if "to yourself", the fixture body is attached to the very top of the door from the hinge side;
  2. if the door opens "from itself", those. in the opposite direction, then the body is mounted on the box, and the lever is attached to the door leaf.

Regardless of the type of traction, lever or channel, overhead closers are installed using a single technology.

The wiring diagram in natural scale is applied to the jamb and the door leaf at the same time, the points of the holes are marked through the paper. The circuit usually comes with a closer.

Holes of the required size are drilled in the box and door leaf. For a door made of aluminum profile or thin-walled metal, it is necessary to use special fastening devices - bongs. At the point of attachment of the fixing elements, they do not allow the metal to deform.

Fasten through the prepared holes rack bar (or lever shoe) and directly to the body of the fixture using self-tapping screws. The reciprocal part of the lever is attached to the body with a special screw (it is included in the kit): the lever is connected at the knee.

The knee lever must be adjusted: it must be located at a right angle to the plane of the door leaf. The force required to close the doors is adjusted using special screws. To do this, the door is opened, the speed with which it closes is estimated, and it is brought to the required level.

If the door closer needs to be adjusted in the “finishing” mode, which is used on doors with a combination lock or latch,
The closing force and its speed are adjustable in two zones. This is the start range, from 180 degrees to 15, and the end range, from 15 degrees to 0. In the end zone, both of these (force and speed) should be slightly higher. But it is better to avoid a very noticeable difference between the speeds.

Important! If you overdo it when adjusting the screws, the case of the mechanism may be depressurized, oil will flow out of it, and it will become unusable.

Some models have additional options, such as opening braking. They are also adjustable, and brought to the desired values.

Custom installation options

Sometimes the situation develops in such a way that it is not possible to install the device according to the standard scheme. Then you have to resort to installing an additional corner or special strips. In each case, their design has to be developed on the spot, taking into account the initial data.

  • It is not recommended to apply efforts when closing the door: hold it back or, conversely, rush it. If the door needs to be blocked (when furniture is carried through it, for example), then for this it is better to disconnect the lever from the closer.
  • Do not insert spacers and bricks.
  • The closer located on the street side of the door should be protected from freezing oil, protected from precipitation.

A metal front door is a guarantee of security.

But its negative qualities include a lot of weight, and as a result, extra noise when closing.

To smooth this nuance, there are mechanisms, the installation of which is available to anyone who has a screwdriver in their hands.

So how to install on a metal door? There is nothing difficult in this. Patience, a tool and a little ingenuity will help with this.

A closer is a mechanism that in most cases works according to the old principle of a grandmother's spring on the door.

But thanks to the development of technology, it was finalized.

But not everything is so simple. Today, there are many types of mechanisms that have different usage parameters.

which are individual for each. Depending on the scheme for supplying force to the spring, closers are divided into devices with an internal hydraulic circuit and rack and pinion power supply and devices with a cam principle of operation.

If we consider the method of attachment, then they are presented as overhead and hidden. In turn, overhead closers with a top location are divided into two types:

  • Devices with articulated (lever) traction, consisting of two knees.
  • Slider system devices - with a sliding channel.

When choosing a device, you need to take into account the characteristics of the door. Its weight and width. There is a certain scale according to which the mechanism is selected, it is approved by the European standard. Closers have 7 sizes, they are designed for a door weight of 20-160 kg and a door leaf width of 750-1600 mm.

Scale for choosing a door closer

Closer size

Door width, mm

Door weight, kg

When choosing a mechanism, remember the following:

  • The maximum indicator of the weight or width of the door is the most basic when choosing.
  • Installing a mechanism with underestimated performance will quickly damage it.
  • Overstating the norms will lead to difficulties in closing and opening.
  • If the weight or width indicators are greater than indicated in the table, then two mechanisms are used.
  • Not all closers can be used outdoors.
  • Consider the features in which the mechanism will be used. You may need a slow close feature, a latch, or something else. Then the closer must have such characteristics.

Studying the properties and quality of the device when buying helps to avoid unnecessary expenses and the correct operation of the device for many years.

Preparing for installation

The success of the whole procedure depends on this stage. If after the purchase the question arises of how to install a closer on a metal door with your own hands and not use the expensive services of a master for this, first of all look in the box and find the instructions and the exact drawing of the device in it. All existing models of closers have these tips in their configuration.

The template indicates the possibilities of mounting on the left and right, opening on itself and inward. But if, for some reason, it was not in the box, then the main thing is to remember: if the door opens outward, then the main mechanism is attached to the box, and the element with levers is attached to it. And if inside, then vice versa.

The adjusting screws on the mechanism are located opposite the hinges of the door structure. On the example, all placement methods are drawn and the desired position of the holes for fixing is indicated:

  • The first stage is to check the equipment according to the instructions, then prepare the tool (screwdriver, drill, drill, screwdriver, hammer, and others).
  • In order for all the drilled holes to coincide with those on the closer and for a clear placement of the device as in the diagram, a marking step is necessary.
  • The door closer placement template is attached to the adhesive tape. And in place of future holes, an electric drill is drilled, in order to achieve minimum errors, a core is used, which makes recesses in the door leaf. It is important to remember the size of the drill, which must be selected in accordance with the diameter of the holes and fasteners. To be sure that the selected drill is correct, you can drill holes on an auxiliary piece of metal and try to screw the fasteners proposed by the manufacturer into it. If the diameter is not observed, the screw may not enter or, on the contrary, fall out, which will lead to additional difficulties during installation.

Mounting

After preparing the components, tools and holes, you can proceed to the penultimate part - installation. The instructions will help you do everything right again:

  • The body of the closer must be fixed with screws on the prepared surface (door or slope).
  • The lever system must fit into the protrusion on the bottom of the main mechanism housing and be fixed with a screw.
  • The connection of the lever and the rod is, like everything before it, not complicated: both elements are connected, and a pressing force is exerted on them. A click is heard to confirm successful alignment. But the main feature is their location in relation to. Which significantly affects the speed of closing the door structure at the last stage.
  • The ability to change the location is due to two separate parts of the rod, which can be adjusted in length. The first part is represented by a long threaded rail. The rotation of this part causes a change in length.
  • If necessary, the usual soft finishing, place the thrust at an angle of ninety degrees to the plane of the door. This is achieved by reducing its size.
  • The last effort to close the door (“slam”) must be strong enough to, for example, overcome the resistance of a latch or a door latch. By lengthening the rod, the lever is placed perpendicular to the door structure.
  • After obtaining the desired parameters, the levers are fixed.
  • The final touch is the snapping of the decorative panel on top of the main mechanism.

How to install a closer on a metal door from the outside

The installation technology is the same as inside. In this case, the conditions are important not for installation, but for the operation itself on the street. Only frost-resistant models are suitable for this. But even in them, under the influence of sub-zero temperatures, the oil in the hydraulic system can thicken.

And this will reduce the functional qualities of the door structure. In addition, the action of precipitation destroys all elements of the closer. Therefore, if it is not possible to protect it from impacts or mount it indoors, then it is better to refuse it altogether.

If any of the presented schemes is not suitable for installation, then non-standard mounting methods are used that will not harm the operation of the closer:

  • Due to the peculiarity of the door frame, it may be necessary to use a building corner. It is installed horizontally with self-tapping screws. The lever structure is fixed from its inner part.
  • The main mechanism is installed on a building corner, in the area of the upper slope of the box. The lever is attached to the door plane.
  • A specially prepared bar or plate is attached to the door. They must be above a flat surface. The main mechanism is fixed on this device. The lever is attached to the box.
  • An auxiliary device in the form of a plate is attached to the lower part of the slope, and a closer is placed on it. And the lever is fixed on.
  • If the slope is not large enough, it can be enlarged with a plate. A system of levers is attached to it. And the mechanism itself is installed on the door according to the already known scheme.

This is a slightly more complicated installation method. It is necessary in cases where the features of the door or slopes do not allow standard installation. This requires a little experience, and if this is not the case, then it is better to ask the master for help.

Mounting a closer on metal doors is not a difficult task, which even a teenager can do. But there are times when additional skills are needed for installation. There are two options here. Do it by trial and error or contact a specialist.

Adjustment

The installation process of the closer is completed. And for the correct service, it remains only to adjust the device. The instructions have a detailed paragraph on the implementation of this event.

As mentioned above, the adjusting screws should be located opposite the hinges of the door structure. There are usually two of them. Each of them has its own function. The first is responsible for the speed of movement of the closing structure, and the second is responsible for the last stage, the closing period, the so-called “finish”.

To increase the desired functions, one or both screws are rotated clockwise. When unscrewing the adjusting screws, be careful, if this is done too much, then the internal oil will leak out of the fixture. To decrease - in the opposite direction. Some mechanisms may have additional adjustment elements. For example, as with a fixative or deliberate slowdown. Of the tools for adjustment, you will need a screwdriver, with which the fasteners are rotated until the required qualities are obtained.

At the time of temperature difference, humidity, or when parts of the mechanism are erased (wear is inevitable), additional adjustments must be made. Because the closer may not perform its functions. It doesn't happen often, up to twice a year. The procedure is not difficult and will take up to ten minutes.

The situation is different with devices that are installed on the street. With a constant difference in the oil level (this is due to the temperature difference) and exposure to snow, water, sun rays, the closer needs to adjust its work much more often. Up to 1 time per season. To reduce the negative impact of the environment on the closer, devices like a visor or gutter will help.

Adjustment is necessary during use and after installation of the door closer. Without it, the functions of the instrument may not work properly.

Rules for using the closer

Violation of operating conditions always leads to rapid wear and tear of the mechanism. To avoid this, it is important to remember the following:

  • Maximum opening quickly renders the door closer unusable. Some devices (slider) have a limiter, and those that do not need shock absorbers. They are mounted on the wall or floor.
  • If the doorway must be open for a long time, then it is necessary to disconnect the lever system from the main mechanism, and then return everything to its original place. There is no need to support the door with something or fix it with a rope. The driver won't last long. For this, there are models with a built-in latch. Their working principle is simple. When the door opens up to a certain point, it remains open, if it is time to close it, it must be taken aside.
  • Damage to the internal device occurs during the forced closing of the doors
  • Lubrication of hinges and levers once a year will extend the life of the mechanism
  • If the device is located outside, it must be protected from environmental influences (sun, rain). Mandatory correction of the work twice a year with the change of season.
  • Correct installation, the absence of errors in the placement of loops and other indicators will help the device perform the functions correctly.
  • Once every few years, a complete oil change in the closer is required. For structures, the use of which takes place on the street at least once a year.
  • Children are frequent provocateurs of breakage of closers because of their love to "ride" on the doors. Additional load and a shift in the center of gravity cause irreparable damage to the mechanism.

The minimum service life of the device is indicated in the warranty that the manufacturer provides for its product. But in order for this period to increase significantly, the closer needs additional care.

Installing a closer on the door is presented in the video:

It did not remain open, they put a closer. Previously, a stretched thick spring was responsible for this action. The disadvantage was the sharp slamming of the sash. Modern products smoothly close the canvas and ensure its snug fit to the door frame. The design of the mechanism is simple. However, the installation specifics of closers of different models is different.

To select and install a door closer, you need to take into account the design of the product. By installation site distinguish between the following models:

  • Overhead installed on top of the door block. The elements are fastened to the canvas, frame, wall or additional structures.
  • Models outdoor type is more often used for glass doors. The product is attached from below to the canvas and the floor.

  • Hidden closers are hidden inside the door block. Installation is very difficult, maintenance is inconvenient.

Models differ transfer of force from the working spring to the lever mechanism:

  • Products with knee, lever or articulated traction. The device is the same, it just has three names. A design feature is a metal lever perpendicular to the door leaf. The mechanism works reliably, but it requires a lot of effort when opening the sash, and also looks ugly on the door block.

  • Models sliding type the operating lever is constantly parallel to the canvas. The appearance is not spoiled by a protruding knee. The door opens smoothly with less effort.

Closers differ internal device:

  • cam more often used in concealed installation systems or models with channel traction. The heart-shaped cam is located on the axis of the lever and is pressed on both sides by rollers. During the opening of the sash, the cam compresses the working spring. When the canvas begins to close, the spring returns to its original position. At the same time, the cam is rotated in the opposite direction, which creates a smooth closing of the sash. Adjustment of the cam mechanism is carried out by an eccentric.

  • Geared or hydraulic the mechanism has a rack-and-pinion transmission of the working force. A toothed gear is installed on the lever axis. When the sash is opened, the gear starts to rotate. The teeth push the rack, setting the piston in motion, which compresses the working spring. With the closing of the sash, the tension weakens. The spring unclenches, pushes the piston, and the action of the whole mechanism occurs in the reverse order. Smooth opening is provided by channels through which engine oil flows inside. Adjustment of the mechanism is carried out by screws that change the diameter of the inlet of each channel.

Hydraulics are usually equipped with linkage and are the most popular models.

Where to put?

In the building, an auto-closer is placed on the front doors from the side of the room. The body of the mechanism must be protected from the aggressive effects of adverse weather conditions. There are models of open installation that are not afraid of frost and rain, but they are also better placed from the side of the room. If necessary, you can install a door closer on the gate or gate.

What to consider when choosing?

When choosing a model for mounting a closer, the width and weight of the sash are taken into account. All products are classified according to the EN 1154 standard. An incorrectly selected model will quickly fail or create certain difficulties in closing the door. Closers are divided into seven gradations with the designation EN 1 - EN 7. Each class is designed for a certain weight and sash width.

The width and weight of the door do not always match the data specified in the standard classification. The product is selected according to the maximum indicator. You can install an auto-closer, where the maximum and minimum limits are indicated in the characteristic. The manufacturer specifies the force range, for example, EN 2 - EN 4.

For outdoor installation choose special street models. If the product is intended for internal use, the viscosity of the oil will change in the cold, the hydraulic system will stop working normally, which will create certain difficulties with opening the door.

The standard functions of all closers provide for the adjustment of the speed and force of the leaf movement in the sector 180–15° and 15–0°. Models with additional features allow:

  • pause the door closing;
  • prevent abrupt opening;
  • to regulate the effort of closing;
  • fix the door leaf in the open position.

How to install a door closer?

The whole process of installing a door closer with your own hands consists of three steps. First, the installation scheme is determined, and it depends on door opening directions:

  • If the sash opens towards the closer, the lever is attached to the door frame, and the mechanism body to the door.
  • When opening back, the lever is fixed to the sash, and the body to the box.

With any installation scheme, the adjusting bolts look towards the canopies.

The second step is to study the instructions. Inside the product packaging, you need to find a closer installation diagram, drawn on a 1: 1 scale. Sample applied to the door and mark the exact attachment points.

The third step provides for mounting, consisting of the following:

  1. According to the applied template markup, the mechanism body is first attached. Then proceed to install the lever. If the product was sold in an assembled state, then the hinge is temporarily disconnected.
  2. A knee is installed on the axis. Fixing occurs with a nut. When installing the knee and the lever, their location is taken into account, which depends on the purpose of the closer. To smoothly close the door, the knee is placed perpendicular to the sash, and the lever at an angle. Docking of the elements is performed with the web in the closed position. If the purpose of installing the mechanism is the latching function, then the lever is placed perpendicular to the sash. Then adjust the length of the knee.
  3. After fastening the two halves of the mechanism, they are connected by a hinge.

The kit includes fasteners that allow you to install the door closer on a plastic door or from any other material. Self-tapping screws usually differ, for example, for wood and metal.

On non-standard doors, it is not always possible to install the mechanism according to the template. For such cases, auxiliary elements are used:

  • in a deep opening, the lever or mechanism housing is fixed to the door frame through the mounting bracket;
  • in order not to damage the pattern on the door or high-mounted glass, the mechanism is mounted on an additional mounting plate;
  • if the sash protrudes beyond the borders of the box in thickness or the frame is too narrow, the alignment of both parts of the mechanism is carried out with mounting plates.

Auxiliary installation elements may be included with the product, but usually corners and plates are purchased separately.

Adjustment

After installing the door closer, the adjustment is performed, the knee lever at this time should be at an angle of 90 ° relative to the door leaf. The door closer is adjusted with screws located on the mechanism body. After each turning with a screwdriver in the directions indicated by the arrows, the leaf travel speed is tested.

The latching mode is regulated in two zones of door opening: 180–15 ° and 15–0 °. The screws must not be completely unscrewed. Case depressurization may occur, followed by oil leakage.

Operation and care

The auto-closer does not limit the opening of the sash. So that the mechanism does not break, an emphasis is installed that does not allow the door to swing open much. For models with a slider lever, the limiter is mounted in the guide channel.

Blocking the door in the open state with various props or manual effort to quickly close the sash wears out the mechanism, and sometimes even breaks out parts. When installed outdoors, the closer body is protected by a visor from rain and sun. To extend the service life, lubricate all moving parts.

If the doors have no defects and the conditions of use are observed, the door closer will serve the time guaranteed by the manufacturer.

Before you install a door closer, you should find out what this mechanism is, what it is for and how to choose it correctly. A door closer or door close is a device that provides automatic soft, silent and smooth closing of the door leaf.

A steel spring placed in a housing with special oil is its main element. Through the valve system, oil flows from one chamber to another when opening, and then returns back when closing. The viscous shock-absorbing liquid allows the sash to open smoothly and silently, and then also slowly and silently return it to its original position.

The prototype of a door lock was an ordinary spring, fastened with one edge to the gate or door, and with the other - to a pillar or door frame, near the canopies. It was very difficult to set up such a mechanism, and the door was difficult to open and hit hard when closing.

Today's closers are silent and allow you to effortlessly open and close the sashes. Today, this mechanism has become an integral part of the doors of shops, offices and institutions, and in our time you will not surprise anyone with such a device. You can install the closer on the door with your own hands, having previously studied the instructions. Devices differ from each other in the type of mechanism, installation location and mode of action.

At the installation site, these devices can be floor, hidden and overhead. The place of installation of the latter is usually the upper section of the door or hatch, the hidden ones are the upper end of the leaf, and the floor, or, as they are also called, closers of the lower location, the lower edge of the door and the floor. Usually they are used for glass structures. The installation of such mechanisms can be viewed in video 1.

The most popular and easy to install are overhead closers. The set includes instructions, a case with a mechanism inside, a lever and a moving bar with a mounting shoe. To regulate the strength and speed of closing the door, there are special screws. Attached to the kit is a full-size mounting template. On it, you can easily make markings by simply attaching it to the canvas.

The procedure for installing a limiter on the door with your own hands

The closer of the consignment note of the upper location can be placed both on the inside of the canvas and on the outside. For interior doors, a template mounting method is chosen: the body of the device is attached to the canvas from the opening side, and the bar with the shoe is attached to the door jamb. It is advisable to put the mechanism on the outer door from the inside, this will save it from the destructive effects of dust and moisture.

And then, in frosty weather, the device attached outside will freeze and will not allow you to freely open or close the sash. Installation of the device depends on the specifics of opening the doors. According to the rules, the outer door must open to the street, so the closer body must be attached to the door frame or to an auxiliary mounting plate. The procedure for mounting the device with your own hands is as follows.

    1. It is necessary to choose a closer, taking into account the weight of the door and its width, using the table of the European standard EN 1154. If the width is less than or equal to 75 cm and the weight is up to 20 kg, an EN-1 class device will be sufficient, if the leaf width is 85 cm and the weight is 40 kg - it is necessary select EN-2. The delimiter class is specified in the docs. How to install a door closer when the canvas is non-standard, heavy, and it is not possible to select the mechanism of the desired class? You can put two mechanisms that will evenly distribute the load.
    2. Select the installation location and method of mounting the device. To do this, you need to consider which direction the canvas opens (to the right, to the left). When opening the doors “towards you”, the device body is mounted at the top of the product not far from the canopies, if “away from you” - on the door frame, and the lever is attached to the door.

Scheme of door closer mounting types

  1. To install a door closer with your own hands, you need to prepare tools: a hammer, a screwdriver or a screwdriver, an electric drill and a key to adjust the device.
  2. The installation scheme included in the kit is applied to the door leaf, synchronously to the door frame and holes are marked with a core through the paper.
  3. Holes of the required caliber are drilled in the loot and the canvas. For armored doors, it is necessary to prepare bonks (rivets) that prevent the iron from deforming in those places where the elements will be attached.
  4. The body of the device and the lever are attached to the drilled holes with self-tapping screws. Using the screw included in the kit, the closer is fastened to the lever, connected at the knee.
  5. The knee lever is set at right angles to the canvas.
  6. Having finished installing the limiter, adjust the speed of closing the door. Having opened it, observe how quickly it closes, and adjust the closing speed to the desired one with the adjusting screws.
  7. When adjusting with your own hands, you must not overdo it with turning out the screws so that the device case does not depressurize and oil leaks, which will make the mechanism unusable.

Do-it-yourself non-standard installation methods

If it is impossible to mount the device according to the standard scheme, install a corner or auxiliary strips. For non-standard installations, the following methods can be used.

  1. The lever cannot be attached to the door frame. In this case, the mounting bracket is fixed with screws and a lever is attached to it from the inside.
  2. The body of the device is fixed on the corner, fixed on the upper bevel of the box, and the lever is fixed on the door.
  3. A mounting plate is attached to the canvas, on which the closer body is placed. The lever is fixed to the door hatch.
  4. The mounting plate is fixed on the door hatch and the mechanism itself is mounted on it, and the lever is mounted on the door.
  5. The device is attached to the canvas in the usual way, and the lever is fixed to the mounting plate.

The listed mounting options make it possible to independently attach the closer to any non-template doors. In order for the device to serve for a long time, it is not necessary to close the doors forcibly during use. If you want to block the door leaf, you just need to disconnect the lever from the closer, and not hold the door in different ways. Now you know how to install a door closer with your own hands.
