A DIY coffee table is a creative design for decorating your home interior. How to make a table with your own hands? DIY wood coffee table drawings

In the era of electronic media, few bother to read printed publications. Despite this, coffee tables still occupy a place of honor in every home.

In addition to their direct purpose, they can be used for other useful things: serving a light breakfast or dinner, minor repairs and home creativity.

Simplicity of construction, a variety of shapes and designs, a minimum of tools - all these advantages of coffee tables attract the attention of home craftsmen. In our article, we will make a detailed review of popular homemade products and give practical advice on how to make them.

Design options for coffee tables

The easiest way is to make a coffee table with your own hands, using edged boards, veneered chipboard or MDF.

In order to hide the connection points of the plates, the classic method is used - assembly on round wooden spikes (dowels). All that is required from the home master in this case is to accurately mark the installation locations of the spikes on the ends of the sidewalls and drill the mounting holes for them in the bottom and top covers.

The simplest coffee table made of MDF board

To increase the rigidity of the structure between its side walls, you need to install a vertical cross member. A small niche for storing magazines and other little things will not be superfluous here. It can be made from a plate left after cutting the covers and sidewalls.

Mobility is a useful option of the table. It is implemented by installing furniture wheels on the bottom. Compact transport wheels can be hidden, or you can buy larger ones and deliberately highlight them. So we get an original table on wheels from polished bars supporting a massive wooden table top.

For those to whom mobility does not play a big role, and who want to see a solid rustic-style table in their home, we can offer a variant of powerful boards. Such a table will undoubtedly become one of the main decorations in the living room of any country house.

Reasonable laziness, combined with a thirst for creativity, often leads to interesting discoveries. One of them is a table made from an old tire.

It's very easy to assemble:

  • Two circles with a diameter of 3-4 cm less than the outer size of the tire are cut out in the chipboard plate.
  • Four metal legs are screwed to the first circle.
  • The bottom and the cover are fixed with self-tapping screws to the sides of the wheel.
  • The jute rope is used to decorate the sidewalls and the lid.

Homemade design from an old tire looks great

So it turns out an unusual coffee table, which, if necessary, can be used as a banquette.

The idea of using "random" items to create home furnishings proved to be extremely productive. She gave life to numerous homemade products from boxes and pallets. A little imagination and a minimum of expenses are required in order to assemble a coffee table made of wood based on four standard drawers.

The assembly algorithm looks like this: the boxes are placed on edge, placing them in a circle one after the other. Having connected the structure with the help of self-tapping screws, a shelf is made in its center. Here you can put a flower vase or pour decor from river pebbles or shells. The woodworking is completed with sandpaper, stain and varnish.

Natural wood does not need sophisticated decor. Using it for interior decoration, complement the decor with a simple table. To assemble it, you will need several planed bars and slats of a picket fence.

The frame of the base will look solid and massive when using a contrasting color combination with the top. To do this, the bars need to be tinted with a dark stain, leaving the cover in the natural color of the pine sawlog.

Wood in furniture goes well with metal. You can verify this by making a loft-style coffee table on metal legs. Its cover is assembled from three pieces of tongue-and-groove board "forty" and framed with a cornice plank.

To make the legs, you will need a welding machine, a piece of steel plate 1.5-2.0 mm thick and several scraps of smooth reinforcing steel with a diameter of 10-14 mm.

Having bent four rods according to the template, square pieces of plates (or thick carpentry corners as in the photo) are welded to them and alternately attached to a tabletop assembled from a grooved board. For final finishing, you need to grind, toned and varnish the lid, sides and paint the legs.

Instead of a bar for the manufacture of the base, you can use a rectangular profile pipe. Having welded two rectangles from it, cleaned the seams and covered the metal with silver paint, we will get reliable supports for the tabletop, assembled from thick oak boards.

To increase stability, the metal sidewalls under the cover are connected with a piece of a profile pipe.

Coffee tables with sawn wood tops look very impressive. Finding this basic element is easy. At any sawmill you will be offered a "semi-finished product" of the right size. An electric planer and a belt grinder will help you bring it to condition.

The legs of the table can be made from thick bars or a rebar can be used for them. The contrast between the massive top and the light metal base gives the structure a touch of exclusive design.

Another interesting option for combining materials is wood and glass. The tabletop can be oval or round, resting on a cruciform base of two bar frames.

Crafted from a wooden pallet and covered with square glass, this movable coffee table looks stylish and modern.

The glass gives a rich look to the entire structure and closes the gaps between the pallet slats through which small objects can fall onto the floor.

Those who prioritize functionality will surely like the transforming coffee table. Through simple manipulations, it radically changes not only its height, but also its appearance.

In the assembled state, it is an ordinary stand for magazines and newspapers. By lifting the two sides with legs, we increase the height of the table and expand the surface of the tabletop to a “dinner format”.

The basis of another transforming system is two metal frame-pedestals. Each of them is hinged to the table top. In the assembled position, they lie horizontally, and when the lids are lifted, they turn on hinges and stand upright.

The height of the unfolded structure is 73 cm. This is quite enough to use the transformer as a computer desk.

Its cover consists of two plates that can be shifted horizontally. In this case, one plate rotates on a hinge around its axis. If necessary, such a transformer can be turned into a dining table for 4 people in a matter of seconds.

Coffee table transformer "three in one"

Someone creates folding adaptive systems, and someone successfully experiments with ordinary plywood scraps. The result of the search for new forms was such an unusual coffee table.

We can only be surprised at the scrupulous accuracy of the calculation and its talented embodiment in a visible image.

Theoretically, everything looks simple: the base is sequentially glued together from three dozen plywood frames. Each of them has a certain angle of inclination of the legs.

In practice, to calculate all the elements of a plywood stand, a three-dimensional modeling program is needed.

The plywood “pie” assembled together attracts the eye with an unusual futuristic shape. A glass lid completes this piece of innovative carpentry technology.

“We would like something simpler, but also beautiful,” the home master will say. Please, there is a table no less elegant, but more affordable to manufacture. It consists of three packs of thin planed boards.

Numerous slots in the type-setting table top can be covered with a glass cover.

A few words need to be said about the connection of glass with wood. The best solution is to use a transparent "optical" glue. It is quite difficult to drill thick glass at home without causing irreparable damage to it. So give up the idea of mechanical fixation and let modern chemistry do its best.

Self-manufacturing

Speaking about the material for the countertop, we completely forgot about the wooden lining. This is an excellent material at hand, equally suitable for creating a lid, sides and legs.

Tabletop made of eurolining - beautiful and reliable

The shape of the tabletop from the lining can be any. The lid, assembled from wooden planks, is cut with an electric jigsaw along a given contour.

To make a coffee table from a lining, we need several tools:

  • screwdriver;
  • jigsaw;
  • belt grinder;
  • hacksaw;
  • roulette.

The dimensions of the finished product and the design of the docking units should be thought out in advance and entered into the draft drawing.

The finishing of the table is carried out in two stages. Before assembly, sand the surface of the lid, bottom and legs with sandpaper. After completion of the work, the wood is covered with a tinting stain and a colorless varnish.

It is even easier to make a coffee table made of chipboard. This material performs two functions at once: it forms a continuous surface and carries the load. We recommend using veneered board, as paint and varnish cannot hide the texture of wood chips on bare chipboard.

After completing the assembly, you need to close all the edges (tabletops, bottom and legs) with plastic furniture tape, warming it up with a building hair dryer before gluing.

Many things can be done by hand. It is difficult in most cases, only at first glance. The new review has collected examples of unique and amazing coffee tables that craftsmen have made with their own hands.

1. Old suitcase

Old suitcases are real finds for designers and out-of-the-box thinkers. Through simple manipulations, suitcases turn into unique furniture and decor items. For example, you can turn an unnecessary suitcase into an original coffee table by simply screwing the legs to it. Such a table will add charm to both a bachelor's apartment and a family living room decorated in a classic style.

2. Boards

Instead of going to the furniture store and buying a finished product, get creative and go to the hardware store for wooden blocks and metal legs. Next, you should connect the boards to each other and screw the boards to them. A handmade table is a unique and versatile thing, as wooden furniture fits perfectly into any interior.

3. Battery

Got new batteries? However, do not rush to throw away the old cast iron radiator. Buy a piece of glass and turn an old battery into an original coffee table that you definitely won't see in the store or your friends.

4. Framed window

An old framed window is a wonderful material for creating a charming living room coffee table. Screw the legs wrapped with coarse ropes to the frame and decorate the surface of the table with beads and shells.

5. Logs

A stunning low table can be made from small logs. First you need to assemble the base of the table from plywood, glue wooden bars around the perimeter, and close the middle with a plywood lid. Next, you need to glue thin wooden cuts on the plywood cover so that it seems as if the table is made entirely of logs, screw the legs and carefully cover all the cracks.

6. Wooden cuts

Large wooden saw cuts are an amazing material for creating a beautiful and original table that will become a real highlight of the living room and will last for many years. Making such a table is easy. It is necessary to carefully process the wood and fasten the two saw cuts together, glue a wide wooden leg bar in the center and open the surface with varnish.

7. Pallet

Wooden pallets are an excellent material for creating a wide variety of furniture: sofas, beds, chairs and of course tables. First, you should get a pallet, carefully clean it and paint it in the desired color. There is nothing left to do - screw the legs and put the glass tabletop on top.

8. Wire reel

A large wooden reel for wires is a practical ready-made coffee table. Of course, getting it is not so easy, but if you are lucky, you know what to do with it.

9. Tire

There are many ideas for creating original furniture from waste car tires. For example, you can make a charming table out of a tire, a piece of plywood, a few pieces of wood, and coarse rope.

10. Glass

A budget and very original table for a modern living room, to create which you will need square-shaped glass and low castor legs.

11. Glass and books

The original idea of recycling unwanted books. Of course, this is not about fiction and the works of the classics, but about old textbooks that are gathering dust on the shelves. In addition to books, you will also need a small piece of glass and a frame. Insert the glass into a pre-painted frame and attach the finished structure to the book columns.

12. Chest

Wooden table and bowl.

Sometimes, even a broken trough can do a good job. For example, it is useful for creating a coffee table. In addition to a metal bowl that acts as a leg, you will also need a round countertop made of chipboard or wood.

15. Old table

An old coffee table can be an excellent material for creating a new table. You just need to paint the legs and cover the table with a fabric of the desired color.

The coffee table is an optional piece of furniture. At the same time, its presence makes any living room more comfortable. On the table you can put a newspaper, put a cup of tea or coffee. We will make this piece of furniture ourselves, making it truly original and comfortable.

Low table - a practical interior decoration

The very first coffee table was created in the middle of the 19th century in England. Within a couple of decades, this furniture adorned the living rooms of all European houses. In the 20th century, the fashion for it came to our country. True, in Russia the tables we are interested in are called coffee tables, not coffee tables. But this does not change the essence of the matter. Such a piece of furniture is understood as a small table no more than 40-50 cm high, which can have any ergonomics, look and design. It all depends on the preferences of the consumer.

In furniture stores, low tables are sold in a wide range. You can find both an inexpensive design and a designer thing that can make any interior chic and unusual. But many home craftsmen want to make an original table themselves using a variety of improvised materials. We put a piece of our soul into home-made furniture. So, it will turn out really comfortable and will be able to fill the home with comfort and warmth.

Coffee tables are made from wood and glass. It is also possible to assemble unusual and beautiful designs from:

  • an old window and ordinary books;
  • unused heating radiator;
  • wooden pallets or boxes;
  • dismantled interior or entrance door;
  • car tire;
  • wicker basket;
  • coils from the electric cable.

There are a lot of options for making a table for tea parties. You just need to show your imagination and listen to the advice of experienced craftsmen who are engaged in self-decoration of their homes. Next, we describe the most popular ways to build coffee tables. And you stop your choice on the most suitable option.

We make furniture from chipboard - as easy as shelling pears!

Chipboard is the most affordable material to create. Chipboards are processed without problems, easily cut to the required dimensions, and have an affordable price. For the assembly of low tables, it is recommended to use laminated boards, as they are characterized by an attractive appearance, and products from them are durable. There are many sites on the Internet where it is not difficult to find various drawings with dimensions for making furniture from chipboard. We propose to make a table, focusing on the sketches below.

The design we planned consists of the following elements:

  • shelf dimensions 500x700 mm;
  • countertop 736x736;
  • 4 strips 100x464;
  • 4 plastic corners and the same number of legs (or wheels);
  • 2 bottoms (the dimensions of each of them are 500x700);
  • 4 strips 100x464.

We will fasten these elements with cofirmats, they will need 8 pieces, and 16 3.5x16 mm.

We make the table step by step. First (position 1 in the diagram) we make a shelf from a chipboard (preferably, as it was said, laminated) board. Cutting is done with an electric jigsaw, using a file with a small step. Such a tool will eliminate the likelihood of chips. Then (position 2) we attach the planks to the tabletop (we sit them on plastic corners). We mount the shelf (pos. 3) in the center of the strips installed vertically. We make holes in it with a cross section of 4.5 mm (you will need a drill with an appropriate drill). We fix the shelf with confirmations. Without them, our tea table may not be very stable and reliable in operation. With the help of confirmations, we screw the bottom of the structure (pos. 4).

After that, we fasten the legs (pos. 5). They are not fastened from the very edges of the table, but retreated from them by about 15 mm. Instead of legs, it is allowed to mount small wheels (fixed with self-tapping screws). Then we get a mobile coffee table that can be moved throughout the home. It remains only to bring home-made furniture to mind. We glue with a melamine edge all the visible joints of our table. Visually, the design of laminated chipboard will look perfect! By the way, instead of wood chip blanks, you can use MDF (wood fiber products). The result will be about the same.

Glass table - stylish and elegant

The interiors, made in a modern theme, are perfectly complemented by compact glass tables. They are installed on wooden or chrome legs. It is desirable to use frosted glass. It usually has a special film that protects the countertop from mechanical damage. In addition, stains from spilled tea, coffee, other drinks and fingerprints on frosted glass will not be so noticeable.

The recommended tabletop width is up to 120 cm. There is no need to build a table with large parameters. It will be difficult to fit it into the interior of a standard apartment or a small private house. Choose any form of construction. But if you are making a glass coffee table with your own hands for the first time, it is better to stay in a rectangular configuration. We can buy chrome legs in a furniture store. And wood components are easy to make yourself. A drawing of a table with standard dimensions is shown below.

Let's get to work. First, we cut the glass according to the given geometric parameters. This operation must be done slowly. Place the glass on a flat surface. We outline the cut lines with a simple pencil. Wet the glass cutter with sunflower oil (or other lubricant). We apply a metal ruler to the intended line. Gently (without strong pressure) we go through the markup with a glass cutter. Then we shift the glass from the surface, ensuring that the extra pieces of material are on weight. We tap our fingers along the marking line, lightly press. After these actions, unnecessary parts of the glass break strictly along the lines made.

The cut material needs to be processed. First, we clean the edges of the glass with a file, then with a grinder equipped with a diamond tool. Additionally, it is recommended to sand potentially unsafe parts of the glass with sandpaper (fine grit). Then we take a thin felt, mount it on the edges of the countertop and press it against it. This will protect our furniture from scratches. Flip the table face down. We make marks for mounting the legs. From the edges of the tabletop, it is desirable to install them at a distance of at least 50 mm.

We drill holes at the top of the bases of all legs. They will be required to attach the suction cup. Everything is simple here. We process the suction cups with an adhesive, mount them in the prepared holes, press the elements as tightly as possible. After the glue sets, we turn the home-made structure into its normal position and wait about two days. After 48 hours the coffee table will be ready for use.

We will build a structure from wood - a win-win option

Wooden tea tables are suitable for any living space, no matter what kind of decor is implemented in them. Wood products look great both in classic interiors and in the most modern ones. Making wooden furniture with your own hands is really simple. Moreover, we can build a table of any design - the simplest, with many additional drawers, stands, shelves. With the right approach to business, we will get a piece of furniture that is no different from expensive store tables.

We will not offer a drawing of a wooden structure. Any craftsman is able to draw up a simple sketch of such a structure with the desired dimensions. But let's say a few words about the materials and tools that will be needed to complete the work. Stocking up:

  • bars or trimmings of wooden boards (of which we will make table legs and crossbars);
  • two thick boards;
  • varnish and stain;
  • grinder, sandpaper;
  • wood saw;
  • glue;
  • electric drill.

We start creating. We cut thick boards to the required dimensions to make a countertop out of them. We connect them with each other with glue. We are waiting for the structure to stick together firmly. At this time, we make crossbars and legs from scraps of boards or bars. We give the tabletop the selected shape. It can be rectangular or square (it's easier), but tables with a variety of roundness and curves look better. Wood is easy to work with. With the help of a hacksaw, we can easily create a countertop of the configuration we need. After that, using a grinding machine, we carefully process the finished elements. Additionally, we rub their surface with sandpaper.

On the countertop, legs, crossbars we apply stain. This composition gives the tree a noble look, providing the effect of antiquity. These elements are completely processed with a stain. We need to apply it not only on the surface, but also on the end parts of the coffee table parts. Nuance. The ends of wood products can be covered with decorative materials, for example, butterflies often used for this purpose.

Next, we attach the crossbars to the tabletop, assembled from two boards. The operation is performed using glue and round spikes inserted into pre-made holes. The latter are drilled in the right places with an electric drill. We fix the legs in the same way: we make holes, grease the spikes with glue, insert them into the grooves. The tea table is ready. Let's cover it with varnish so that the design looks perfect, and enjoy the new piece of furniture in the house.

Books, waste paper and an old window - you can even make a table out of them!

As we have already noted, the original coffee table can really be made from various improvised materials. If you have a lot of old magazines and newspapers, you don't have to throw them away. Let's make an unusual table out of them according to the following scheme:

  1. 1. We roll waste paper into tight tubes.
  2. 2. We fix the resulting blanks with rubber bands.
  3. 3. Immerse the prepared tubes into a bucket filled with a water-polymer emulsion.
  4. 4. We are waiting for 5–7 minutes.
  5. 5. We take out the soaked paper blanks and hang them on a rope on wire hooks. Drying should be carried out in a room where there is no dust. Don't forget to put plastic wrap under the rope. Streams of water from waste paper will flow onto it.
  6. 6. From the dried tubes we form a cabinet for a coffee table - just glue them together (as tightly as possible) with PVA glue.

The created cabinet is usually fixed with strong threads and left to dry. Then we cut our homemade table from the top and bottom. We get a neat bedside table. We glue ordinary or mirror glass on top of it, using silicone, which is used to repair aquariums. Advice. Glass should be 1.2–1.5 cm thick. Thin countertops will be unreliable in operation. One careless move and they will crack.

In cases where the old window structure in the dwelling is changed to a new one (for example, to a plastic one), the dismantled product can also be adapted for a coffee table. We are waiting for a minimum of difficulties. We remove hinges, handles, other accessories from the window, wash the canvas well. If necessary, peel off the old layer of paint, polish the surface and paint with a fresh composition. Before us is a finished tabletop. You can install it on any legs. A great option is to make them from volumes that have been collecting dust on bookshelves in your home for decades.

We fasten the books to each other, forming legs of the required height from them.

The procedure is performed using superglue. Another option is to drill neat holes in the books and thread a steel bar through them. We install the updated window frame on homemade legs and rejoice at our ingenuity. Such coffee tables are good for interiors in retro, vintage, Provence styles. Instead of a window, by the way, it is allowed to use old doors, a mirror or just a large board, which had no place in the household.

Furniture for tea parties from pallets and boxes - simple and original

Wooden pallets are products used for the transportation and storage of various goods and cargo. Pallets perform the same function. But they are considered more modern designs. Both the first and second are ready-made countertops. Low tables from them turn out well. At the same time, the entire process of making home-made furniture from such products requires a minimum of time and labor from the home master.

We just need to thoroughly clean and wash the pallet, process it with a grinder and sandpaper, and paint it in the chosen color. It is not necessary to apply a single color paint. Color the table to your liking. Apply any ornaments and symbols to the pallet. And if you wish, you can not paint the workpiece at all, leaving the wood in its natural form. Small chips, scratches, cracks emphasize the natural texture of the structure.

We install the prepared tabletop on low wooden blocks or on wheels. Here you need to understand that the mass of pallets is quite serious - up to 15-25 kg. Therefore, wheels and legs for a table from a pallet should be selected wisely. They must withstand a given load. However, a pallet of sufficient height may not be equipped with legs. The design and without them will turn out convenient and reliable.

If there are no pallets at hand, it is really possible to make a table from any empty wooden boxes. Suitable containers for wine, vegetables, fruits. From two drawers you can build a small coffee table, and from four - a spacious structure for gatherings with friends. We assemble the boxes into square or rectangular furniture. We fasten them together with nails, putty the installation sites of the hardware with a mixture of glue and sawdust. We decorate the structure, cover it with varnish. We get a chic table.

In the free space between the boxes we put a vase or a pot of flowers. You can also cover it with a suitable sheet product. Nuance. Design experts advise making a plastic countertop coating if the interior of the home is made in the style of minimalism and modernity. For high-tech and art deco decors, it is better to use a sheet of polished steel. Country-style interiors are perfectly complemented by wooden flooring. And the glass, placed on a table of drawers, will harmoniously fit into any decor of the room.

Other ideas for assembling structures - a little more creativity

It is really possible to build a massive coffee table from an old cast-iron radiator. It is enough to tint it a little, install it on strong wheels, and cover it with glass on top (if possible, with rounded edges). The functionality of such a design, of course, is in question. She, nevertheless, weighs 60–80 kilograms. But here she does not hold originality. Not a single guest of your home will be able to ignore such an unusual piece of furniture.

And car lovers have the opportunity to make a convenient table from an old tire from their iron horse. Very often, tires are used to decorate the garden and vegetable garden. But even in the house, with proper preparation, they will look out of place. To create a table from a tire in the now popular eco-style, you need to stock up:

Table from an old tire

  • two circles cut out of a plywood sheet (we take their cross section a little less than the diameter of the tire used);
  • superglue;
  • cord, plait or decorative rope;
  • varnish;
  • self-tapping screws, electric drill;
  • wheels.

We attach plywood circles to the tire on both sides. Products can be put on superglue or (more reliable) on self-tapping screws. If you want the homemade plywood cover to open, one of the circles should be installed on small loops. Then in the niche of the tire it will be possible to store a variety of household trifles.

After that, we proceed to decorate the coffee table. We make a small circle from a rope (harness). We coat the middle of the plywood countertop with glue. Carefully fasten the rope element on it. Similarly, going from the center to the edges, we decorate the rest of the surface. Then we turn the tire over and continue to braid it on the sides. The bottom of the structure can not be decorated. Attach the legs to the bottom sheet (as an option - wheels). The table is ready. It remains to cover it with varnish or a special wax composition.

Fantasize more! Original tables for tea parties can also be made from other improvised materials. The more creative the craft will look, the more positive emotions you will experience when looking at it. Decorate your home with unusual homemade furniture, creating unique interiors. Good luck.

It's hard to be a fan of home furniture design solutions without having enough spare cash to buy them. The point is not only in the level of your income, but also in the price tags that are characteristic of such furniture, because they are often several times higher than for traditional options.

You can solve this problem by making a coffee table with your own hands. You will be pleasantly surprised to learn how easy and fun it can be.

low table

Most often, this option is found among coffee tables. They are not new, they just started getting more attention from the public lately.

They gained popularity two centuries ago, when tea lovers, the British, began to use them. A hundred years later, this trend has spread to other countries of the world, including ours. Now this is not a very popular option, however, having the right to life.

Chipboard table

A simple and quite practical option can be a chipboard coffee table, which you can make yourself without any problems. Now in the furniture market, chipboard is one of the most affordable materials that can be used to create a traditional table. Why traditional, we will talk later.

The price tag of this option will be significantly lower than if your choice falls on a wooden coffee table. It is best to take sheets coated with laminate or varnish. Nevertheless, you will put such a table in your house, and therefore you need to pay attention to the aesthetic component.

Further, everything depends on the design you choose. Simple, at the same time, a small table can be made from several parts. This option will be small and with several shelves. Perfect for the living room, and will stand near the sofa or armchair.

Shelves are well suited for magazines and remotes for controlling equipment. This reduces the chance of them getting lost.

glass table

Drawings of such coffee tables can be easily found on the Internet. Only one feature needs to be taken into account - in almost any case, you will need to buy a glass part of the table. You can also solve this issue with the help of old glass, which can be in your barn or garage.

The main part of the table can be made from the material that suits you, and cover it with a sheet of glass on top. To do this, you need to cut it in shape, then process the edges and fix it on the main structure.

Even if you do not make such a table entirely of glass, with the exception of the frame, you can get a very attractive and interesting result that will look good both in a modern interior and in the usual apartment design without any features.

Wooden table

Sufficiently detailed instructions on how to make a coffee table out of wood can be found on the pages of thematic magazines. This option will be more expensive than in the case of chipboard, but at the same time, the appearance pays for everything. Such material is better suited for large tables, at which, if necessary, you can work or use them to store documents that you view while sitting in front of the TV in the evening.

The design can be tritely simple: four bars for legs, which are complemented by a tabletop of the desired shape. Depending on the latter, you can take three legs, which will look even more interesting.

On top of this, you can add various decorative and functional details - whether it be shelves or some kind of decoration. Here you can give freedom to your creative nature.

Unusual table options

You could often see photos of coffee tables that are made from unusual materials. These can be safely attributed to a table made from an old suitcase.

The most interesting thing about this is that you will practically not have to do anything to create such an item. It will be enough for you to do the restoration of a pleasant appearance, if necessary, and the installation of such a table.

A huge advantage of this solution will be the reasonable use of space in the room. Well, this will be in front of the sofa, while the space inside the suitcase would also be good to use. There you can put some kind of blanket, or boxes of shoes. In general, here the matter is already behind a personal choice, in any case it is very convenient and practical.

Table from improvised materials

Separately, I would like to consider a coffee table made by hand from improvised materials. There are several options that I really liked, and I want to share them with you.

The first is a pallet table. They can be found in any supermarket or warehouse, and therefore it will not be difficult to get them. They are made of wood, which is very good for the interior. This tree can be varnished, which will greatly change its appearance.

Take two such pallets, or pallets, as you prefer, put the first with the legs up, put the second on top so that the legs converge. They can be additionally connected with self-tapping screws, and put a sheet of glass on top of them. The option is very beautiful and easy to implement.

As you already understood, I prefer the options when you do not need to deal with the work of furniture companies, and cut out all the details, and then customize them. I'm more interested in creative and fresh solutions.

For the second option, you will need only four old boxes, which, when placed on their side, must be connected to each other in a clockwise direction. We cover them with varnish beforehand, connect them and that's it - the table is ready. The empty space inside can be closed with a tree and a flower placed on top. Good luck with your choice.

DIY coffee table photo

Coffee tables were very popular in the 90s of the twentieth century, they were placed in living rooms and served as a storage for the press. In the age of high technology, many people read the latest news on the Web, and therefore rarely buy magazines. But such tables have not yet lost popularity and are still placed in apartments, because they are comfortable and functional. And instead of spending money on buying new furniture, you can make a coffee shop with your own hands. It just takes a little imagination and effort.

From the history of the coffee table

This piece of furniture has a very long history, despite the fact that it became most popular in Russia only in the 20th century. A coffee table is a small table, often elongated or with a round top., which was usually placed in the living room in front of or between armchairs and served to store magazines, books and other printed matter. It could also be used to decorate the interior or as a coffee table for placing cups of drinks on it. According to GOST, this is a small low table designed for interior decoration and use in a recreation area.

For the first time such tables appeared in Europe - a part of the world where people love comfort and beauty. The first table was made around the 18th-19th century - according to historians, it was made by a certain W. Goodwin. After that, this type of furniture began to be actively produced by a couple of furniture companies.

On a note! The height of the old and modern tables was very different. The ancestors of the modern variation were much taller. The height of the product was particularly influenced by the East, where it is customary to make small tables in height.

Now the coffee table can be seen not only in living rooms, but also in offices and other areas of the house. Its main difference from a regular table is the small size of the table top and relatively low height. Some tables, in addition to the table itself, also have crossbar shelves, on which it is convenient to place the press directly or any small items. In some variations of the tables, such shelves are replaced with drawers. You can put souvenirs, vases on the tabletop itself, use it as a stand for mugs and glasses during tea drinking, etc. Thanks to such a table in the room, you can equip a cozy seating area or arrange a small corner.

Usually the height of a coffee table is no more than 50 cm, but in general there are tables with a height both smaller and larger. Here the wishes of the owner play an important role.

What to do?

So, we figured out the history of the tables. This is really the furniture, without which any room seems not as cozy as it could be. So it’s worth buying it, especially since the simplest options are inexpensive. If we are talking about expensive design options, but there are no funds for them, or you just want something of your own, individual, then an alternative to buying can be the work of making a table on your own. Advantages of a homemade product:

  • the opportunity to realize your wishes to the fullest;
  • exclusive design;
  • convenience due to precise adjustment of parameters and sizes;
  • the opportunity to make the table of your dreams;
  • a chance to use improvised materials for manufacturing;
  • a chance to give things new life.

A hand-made table can be placed in any of the rooms at home or in the office. It will not only harmoniously fit into the interior, but also warm the soul with the fact that it is made independently, and no one else has exactly the same product.

Now that interesting and unusual design solutions are so popular, magazine tables can look like anything. They can be quite large or compact, simple and carved, with various shapes of legs and tops. Here, as the creator's imagination wishes. Even in the store, sometimes you can find very interesting variations that will surely decorate the interior and will serve faithfully for many years.

A variety of materials are used as materials for the manufacture of coffee tables:

  • glass;
  • metal;
  • wood;
  • a rock:
  • plastic.

In general, you can use anything and you can combine materials with each other. Even natural material in the form of snags can be used in skillful hands. Of course, the easiest option is to make a table out of wood. It is easiest to work with him at home.

Table. Basic materials.

MaterialCharacteristics

This is the simplest, but at the same time durable material. A table made of solid wood is distinguished by beauty, environmental friendliness, strength and durability. Working with wood at home is easy and pleasant, no need to buy additional equipment. Wood derivatives - plywood, MDF, chipboard can be attributed to the same category of materials. You can also make coffee tables out of them, and no additional equipment is required either. But, for example, MDF and chipboard are more difficult to saw, the strength and density of the materials are high. They are very afraid of water. Plywood is easy to work with, but less durable than solid wood. True, it is not always possible to find good quality plywood.
Usually, metal is used only for the manufacture of a frame or support for a table; countertops are not made from this material. It is quite difficult to work with it at home; special equipment such as a welding machine may be required. But if you wish, you can use metal to create a homemade table. It will be strong and durable. It is only important that the metal is covered with paint or a special protective layer, otherwise it will quickly rust.
As a rule, glass can be used to create coffee table tops and shelves, while the legs are made of metal or wood. Glass is not easy to work with due to its physical properties (fragility), but thanks to this material, interesting design solutions can be realized. The disadvantage of glass tables is that stains and stains will constantly appear on their surface, which is not easy to get rid of. Also, these are quite heavy products due to the fact that thick glass is used - a thin sheet will make a too fragile table.

On a note! If desired, you can turn it into a coffee table and a regular table, and also use it to create stumps, driftwood, the remains of old furniture or household appliances, and the remains of repair materials. Here you just need to turn on the fantasy.

What do you need to work?

So, the easiest version of a table that can be made at home is a wooden one. And to work with wood or its derivatives, the following tools and materials may be required.

Do not forget that before the main work you need to draw a clear diagram of the future table and estimate its dimensions. The drawing will help not to make mistakes in the future, and will also provide the ability to calculate the required amount of materials for the manufacture of the product. So it will not be superfluous to arm yourself with a sheet of paper and a pencil, as well as a square, ruler, tape measure.

On a note! Those who own a computer can be advised to use design programs where you can draw the selected table model, calculate its dimensions and even estimate its appearance in the end.

Making a table from rails

From ordinary wooden thin slats, you can very quickly and easily build a universal table, which, if there is sufficient strength, can even serve as a bench.

Step 1. To create a small table from slats, you will need boards from which slats will be cut (2.5x7.5 cm - 3 pcs, 2.5x10 cm - 1 pc, 2.5x5 cm - 8 pcs). You also need to take fasteners for the legs (4 pcs), the legs themselves (can be tapered about 40 cm long), screws and self-tapping screws, wood putty and paint, as well as decorative nails. You will also need sandpaper. From the tools you need to get a drill with drills, a hacksaw or a jigsaw, clamps.

Step 2 Next, you need to take boards 2.5x7.5 cm and cut their ends at an angle of 45 degrees, and from those that have parameters of 2.5x5 cm, you need to make slats that have the same length as the very first boards cut at an angle, only inside, up to 45 degree cuts.

Step 3 Then you need to take the blanks made second and place them between the boards cut at an angle. All rails must be level. Next, you need to measure the distance between the extreme boards and make two jumper blanks from a 2.5x10 cm board. They will play the role of two supports for narrower rails. These jumpers must be fixed with self-tapping screws on the rails. Also, using a special jig, you need to drill two holes at the ends of the supports. They will allow you to connect the structure with the extreme bars. However, you can simply connect them with screws.

Step 4 Blanks for the box (2.5x7.5 cm) must be pressed with clamps to the edges of the structure. The main thing is that everything is assembled and installed smoothly. So that there are no traces of the clamps, it is recommended to put small pieces of wood under them. Now you can screw the sides to the jumpers through the holes made in step 3, or simply with self-tapping screws.

Step 5 It is required to measure the width of the table and make the ends of the box. The end edges of the slats in the middle, as well as the edges of the edge boards cut at an angle of 45 degrees, must be lubricated with special glue for wood.

Step 6 Next, you need to install the end boards in this place and pull them with a belt. In this position, the table blank must be left until the glue dries. You can additionally fix the boards on the rails with decorative nails.

Step 7 Now it remains to sand the surface of the table, then cover it with primer and paint, and attach the legs to it. It is important to remember that after applying the primer, you need to wait for it to dry, and only then apply the paint. Other work should be done only after the complete drying of the paint layer. In addition, the table can be varnished.

Driftwood table

An original and stylish table can be made from an ordinary driftwood found in the forest and a piece of glass. Here, even special skills are not needed for the natural material to turn into a beautiful coffee table.

Step 1. First of all, in the forest you need to find a snag that is suitable in shape and size. Usually, just the root part of a fairly mature tree is used.

Step 2 It is required to remove all the bark from the surface of the driftwood, clean it of debris and earth.

Step 3 It is necessary to saw off the excess wood from the bottom and top of the driftwood, forming the most even cuts. One of them will serve as the bottom support, the second - a support for the glass.

Step 5 The next step is to coat the surface of the driftwood with wood varnish and let the varnish dry well. You need to cover the entire surface of the former tree.

Step 6 Now it's time to work on the countertop, which will be made of glass. It is necessary to cut a piece of the desired size, and then sand its edges. It is important to remember that the glass must be thick enough, and the edges are sanded using water.

Step 8 It is necessary to drill holes in the glass for the bolts that fix the glass to the snag.

Step 10 It remains to close the bolts with decorative plugs and that's it, the table can be used.

Log table

A very interesting and original table can be made from ordinary logs.

Step 1. First you need to make a frame-box, for which ordinary plywood about 2 cm thick is used. It is necessary to cut out a base blank measuring about 60x80 cm from the sheet, and attach plywood walls to it from above.

Step 3 Part of the logs must be fixed on the base around the perimeter of the box from the outside. At the bottom of the base, you need to attach legs or wheels for the future table. It is required to glue the logs to the base with glue, but from below they must additionally be fixed with self-tapping screws.

Step 4 Next, all the logs are installed inside the box, and the spaces between them are covered in layers with wood putty. The main thing is to dry each layer well. As soon as the putty dries, it is important to sand the surface of the table well.

Step 5 Now the table can be used. It is also recommended to cover its surface with a transparent varnish.

By the same principle, you can make tables from larger logs, or you can immediately take a large stump, peel it from the bark and varnish it. It remains only to screw the legs to it - and the table is ready!
