Do-it-yourself box with a plywood lid. Do-it-yourself plywood box

Plywood boxes can be used for the safe transportation of goods, household items, as well as for organized storage. Of course, you can buy cardboard or plastic boxes, but they are more fragile. Also, the advantage of making the boxes yourself is that the boxes can be made in any size or specially for some thing, for example, for a chandelier. Well, of course, self-made boxes will cost you less.

When I started making boxes for moving, I decided to determine the dimensions of the boxes based on the standard dimensions of plywood 1525X1525 mm. The layout of plywood sheets is shown in the figure.

Based on the indicated dimensions, it is possible to assemble boxes of two sizes

  1. length -763 mm width-508 mm height-508 mm
  2. length -763 mm width-381 mm height-381 mm

Of course, the dimensions of the boxes are given as an example, you can make your own boxes based on your needs. For the manufacture of boxes, I used the following materials:

  • Plywood 4 mm thick
  • Wooden bars with a section of 30x30 mm
  • Carnations 25 mm
  • Self-tapping screws 55 mm

The thickness of plywood and the cross-section of the bars can be changed or taken from those available to you. The number of plywood sheets should be determined based on the number of boxes needed. One box needs 4 wide panels on the sides, bottom, lid and two end panels. Bars can be sawn on a circular saw from any remnants of lumber, boards, bars of a larger section. I cut plywood sheets according to the markup on a homemade circular saw.

There are two types of plywood boxes:

  • In the first case, the bars to which the plywood is attached remain inside the box. The drawers are smooth on the outside and look neater, but they are less durable. Can be used for lighter items.
  • In the second case, the bars remain outside the box. The boxes look like industrial containers, but they can be made more durable. Used for heavier items.

Consider the process of making boxes with even sides:

  • Outside the ends of the box, we fasten one bar at a time, for ease of carrying.
  • Place a lid on top of the box. The box is ready.

For greater strength, the boxes along the edges can be pierced with a special tin strip.

In this article we will talk about how to independently make a device useful in everyday life - a plywood box. An ordinary wooden box assembled from lumber of small thickness is an excellent solution for storing various tools, various useful little things in a garage or home workshop. In addition, such crafts can be used as a mailbox, hanging shelves, etc.

So, we found out that a well-assembled plywood box in everyday life will not remain without use, now we need to find out how to assemble this useful device with our own hands using an available tool. But, before moving on to the assembly instructions, let's consider the main characteristics of the material with which we have to work.

Material Basics

Finished lumber products are characterized by such qualities as:

  • environmental Safety in comparison with chipboard;
  • breaking strength;
  • attractive appearance, since natural veneer is used as the basis;
  • ease of work with slab material, since it is easy to cut, drill and grind;
  • Possibility of subsequent finishing using any paint and varnish materials.

Among the disadvantages of such sawn products, one can only note that the price of plywood is high in comparison with various particle boards.

Important: Considering that the plywood used for the manufacture of boxes and similar crafts rarely exceeds 1-1.5 cm in thickness, joining the parts with nails is impractical.
A neat and at the same time reliable connection can be achieved by gluing or using self-tapping screws.

Tool box assembly with lid

To begin with, let's try to make a tool box out of plywood with our own hands. The product will have a suitcase design with handles in the side parts. The design will be convenient not only for storing the tool, but also for carrying it over a short distance.

In order for the assembled product to be durable, reliable and at the same time easy to use, it is necessary to use the appropriate fittings.

We will need the following:

  • handle with mounting brackets;
  • corner fixing hardware;
  • locks holding the cover;
  • door hinges or one piano hinge, matched to the size of the lid.

In addition, to make a plywood tool box, you will need a jigsaw with a fine-toothed blade, a screwdriver with a drill function, a square and a pencil. To finish the finished product, you will need sandpaper and brushes for applying paints and varnishes.

We cut out structural elements from three-layer plywood, including a solid wall; wall divided into two parts, sidewalls. We do not specifically indicate the dimensions, since you yourself will be able to determine the required size of the product, based on the dimensions of the tool that is supposed to be stored in the box.

Assembly instructions for the compact box shown in the photo are as follows:

  • in the planks prepared for the sidewalls, we cut out the elements of the tongue-and-groove connection with a jigsaw;

  • we coat the grooves and ridges with carpentry glue and connect them together;
  • after the adhesive joint of the sidewall has dried, we glue it to the lower and upper large walls to make a box and two hinged lids;
  • to make the mount more durable, it can be reinforced with small self-tapping screws;
  • we fasten hinged covers using hinged loops;
  • on both sides at the ends of the box we fasten the handles, as shown in the photo;
  • at the end of the assembly, we fasten the locks;
  • as a finish, we clean the finished product with sandpaper and apply one or two layers of paintwork.

Important: In order to prevent the plywood from cracking when screwing in the screws, we pre-drill a hole with a diameter half the diameter of the self-tapping screw used.

Assembling a tool tray-ladder with a wooden handle

Now we have a more complex drawing of a plywood box, according to which we will try to assemble a structure that is in demand in any garage or workshop. For the manufacture of this design, five-layer plywood with a thickness of at least 1.5 cm is required.

We are very rarely worried about things and objects that we are forced to use at home, at their summer cottage or in the office. We decided together with you to think about an ordinary wooden box. You can store different things in it, make a beautiful flower pot, a box for letters and correspondence out of it. We look at a photo of a wooden box for different purposes and tasks.

At a manufacturing enterprise, such a container is indispensable as a container, we will talk about the advantages a little later. The most important question that arises: "How to make a wooden box?" To make it, use chipboard, plywood and pine lath.

Today we will start making ordinary wooden boxes with our own hands from wood for correspondence or summer cottages. No special materials and tools are needed here, a standard home kit is sufficient.

Advantages and disadvantages of a wooden box:

  • It weighs less than metal containers;
  • Only natural material is used;
  • Simple assembly of the structure, elementary elements;
  • Strength is higher than ordinary cardboard and parchment;
  • Low purchase cost of the material, wide distribution;
  • With proper surface treatment, the service life increases.

Benefits of using a wooden box:

  • Increased weight of transported things;
  • A tree treated with an antiseptic lasts a long time.

Ways to use a wooden box:

  • In domestic conditions for storage of vegetables, fruit and products.
  • Souvenir packaging for a gift.
  • Packaging of expensive instruments and equipment.

Attention! When making a box for a specific product or product, its dimensions and weight should be taken into account. Toy boxes have standard sizes and characteristics.

Required tools and equipment

Before embarking on a wooden box project, it is required to gather all the tools and equipment in one place.

We will need a woodworking machine, there must be a jointer and a circular saw. Otherwise, we buy the strips we need in the store - size and thickness. You can not do without a pencil, tape measure, building angle and hammer.

We will use the machine for raw wooden blanks, which we will make from a board of 2.5 x 25 x 150 cm.

Instructions for making a wooden box

We take a circular saw and cut it into the wooden elements we need in size, we get edged pieces. First, we cut along the edges, then set it to a width of 20 cm and saw it completely.

Be sure to wear safety goggles while working. It is better if you have a good partner holding the sawn boards.

Having installed the carriage at an angle of 90 degrees, we cut the board into 5 segments, 4 of which are 20 cm, and one more is 24 cm.

Set the planer parameters at a height of 1 mm and process each of the blanks from all sides to get draft versions of the board. For finishing work, the height value should be set to 0.5 mm. The thickness of the finished boards should be 2 cm. We will get boards 2 x 20 x 20 cm.

It is not required to polish the workpiece to a shine, the box will be used to store vegetables and fruits. Tool boxes are made according to the same principle.

We cut the remaining blanks in a width of 4.5 cm, taking into account the direction of the fibers. If you want to make the box ventilated, there will be 3 additional blanks in stock.

Wooden box assembly

The whole assembly process is very simple, no tricks and hidden mysteries. We take the most common nails 5 by 0.15 cm. Why thin nails? So that the structure is tightly fastened and the boards do not crack.

First, we nail the upper and lower planks from the end, then place the remaining wooden blanks. From below we fasten planks 24 cm long to the wooden base, use 35 mm self-tapping screws.

Drawings and dimensions of wooden boxes are presented below.

Wooden box as a flower pot

By its properties and qualities, wood is a versatile material, it can be used to make boxes where we will place our plants.

In the last example, we have already figured out that the tree is very easily processed to a fine state, you can remove absolutely all the bumps and make the surface perfectly smooth. Special skills and abilities are not required for this.

Below we offer to get acquainted with the options for boxes that you can make yourself without any skills with your own hands. The shape and appearance of the structure will depend on your personal imagination.

You can not use an electric tool at all when working with wood, saving a certain amount of money, but much more time will be lost, keep this in mind. With a set of all tools, you will get exactly what was planned in the shortest possible time without making almost any effort.

Be sure to stock up on paint and antiseptic to cover the surface of finished products.

If the box was originally planned for planting flowers, then you can first purchase ordinary plastic pots where flowers will be planted or plant them directly in the box. If you are going to plant in a box, do not forget to spread a film of polyethylene and make holes for drainage.

Photo of wooden boxes with your own hands

Layers of veneer, glued together and while the fibers are perpendicular to each other, are called plywood, and the number of plates for such an assembly is usually at least three pieces.

Due to the asymmetry in the direction of the fibers, the material acquires a certain strength, which in some cases makes it indispensable for the manufacture of non-standard decor, as well as various containers.

Below we will talk about such crafts and tell you a few little secrets, and the video in this article will help you become more familiar with the topic.

Materials and elements

By and large, a do-it-yourself plywood box is made with many necessary tools, that is, a thickness gauge, router, clamps, and so on. But, firstly, not every house can find a special carpentry tool, and, secondly, sometimes you can do without it if you make such a box very simple.

But of course, you can’t do without a tool in general, and, of course, it will be much more convenient if it is electric (circular or jigsaw, screwdriver).

Cutting plywood

  • Now we will learn how to make a box out of plywood without hissing parts and without making grooves with a milling cutter - for work, an electric manual circular will be enough for us to evenly cut the sheet and a screwdriver to assemble individual parts into a whole structure. For our crafts, we use a standard sheet 1525x1525x10 mm, where it will be possible to store, for example, the same vegetables or, say, spare parts from a car.
