Vertical beds from drainpipes. Hanging beds from pvc garden do it yourself

Today, there are many ways to grow a variety of crops in the country. But every day, skilled and ideological summer residents come up with more and more new ways to save space and optimize their own work on the site. One of the results of such work are vertical beds and flower beds.

We have repeatedly talked about creating vertical plantings of plants and chose the classic methods for them, but today we decided to present you with new and even more interesting options that can not only make your work more convenient, but also help decorate and diversify the landscape of your summer cottage.

So, we present to you our findings and creations that shook the “green world” and turned the perception of many summer residents about saving space and vertical plantings.

Vertical planting of plants in plastic pipes

There are some good ideas about using plastic pipes to grow, say, strawberries, herbs, flowers. We will consider each of them so that you can independently determine the most suitable for you.

Planting plants in a single pipe

To implement this idea, it is necessary to take a plastic pipe under the sewer, 2.5 m long. A third of this pipe will sink into the ground so that the structure has good stability, and 2/3 will do useful work in growing crops.

So, one part of the pipe remains intact, along the rest of the length we need to make holes with a diameter of 2-3 cm. certain type of plant. Planting occurs in two ways - the seeds wake up in the pipe along with the substrate and germinate through the holes, or they are planted in the finished holes after the pipe is installed.

In the second planting method, it is possible to grow seedling crops. In addition, it should be borne in mind that you can place several dozen such pipes in the garden, or even create a fence out of them.

The advantages of this idea can be considered high savings in free space, water savings during irrigation (on top of the pipe), uniform distribution of nutrients to all plants during fertilization (fertilization along with irrigation), good crop quality (which does not come into contact with the soil and does not rot), other.

Planting plants in a double pipe

The double pipe design is practically the same as the one described above, but has some additional advantages. To build a vertical bed, you will need to install a smaller diameter pipe in an already installed wide pipe to ensure more uniform watering. To do this, along its entire length, up to the edge, which will rest against the soil below, small holes should be made for water supply. After the pipe is installed in the pipe, the substrate and seeds are woken into the cavity of the wide pipe, or the seedlings are planted externally. In addition, in this case, it will be possible to use simple garden soil if it is not possible to prepare a special substrate at the planting stage.

The advantage of growing plants in such ways can be safely considered the storage of plants in the winter. You can simply remove the pipes from the soil without disturbing the structure of the plants, stack them in piles and insulate them for wintering. In the spring, when it gets warm, the pipes are again installed in the soil and bring the crop.

Hanging pipe bed for your garden

To create the next type of beds, we take all the same pipes for the sewer and cut them lengthwise into two equal parts. Having received the gutters, we install the restrictive elements on the edges and hang our creation on the visor, tree branch, pergola, part of the gazebo. This can be done with a rope, rope, steel wire or even strong fishing line. The number of construction levels can be chosen independently, as well as the length of the beds, the substrate for filling, the number of plant species.

It is also very convenient that you will not spend a lot of money and time on creating such flower beds, and you can decorate the site with novelties that can provide convenience and high quality of growing fresh herbs or bright flowers.

Vertical multi-level flowerbed of tires

Growing plants in wheels - this is what summer residents most often call a similar model. She is known to many, but today we decided to remind her.

To build a vertical bed from the old ones, we need a little time, 3-5 tires of the same or different diameters, fertile soil or a special substrate and, in fact, the plants that are selected for planting.

Here, everything is simple with us - we build the tires into a vertical figure, sequentially pouring the substrate inside, and plant the plants inside, with seeds or seedlings. Planting methods are different for each summer resident, and therefore you can choose your own. The simplest is considered to be in tires, when the seeds wake up in the substrate itself. A more complicated way is a multi-level planting of different plants, due to which you can build an original decorative flower bed. The most difficult garden bed is considered to be a multi-level planting of fruit crops, such as strawberries, tomatoes, cucumbers, and others. To do this, holes are cut in the tires, into which seedlings of plants are subsequently planted.

It is noteworthy that this method not only saves space and diversifies the landscape design of the cottage, but can also help grow a quality crop.

Decorative bed from old furniture

If the country house has an old table with drawers, a chest of drawers or even kitchen furniture, it can always be used, so to speak, past its intended purpose, thereby decorating the area and bringing many interesting moments to it.

For example, an old table with drawers ... an unnecessary piece of furniture can become an excellent garden bed, a design for a vertical flower bed. To do this, you just need to put the furniture in order and protect it with special compounds to protect wood, and then push the drawers a little, fix them and create pretty flower beds.

As you can see, everything is very simple, and now you just need to fill the boxes with earth and plant flowers or even fresh herbs, taking into account all the rules of agricultural technology.

Thus, you not only decorate the territory, but also give a second chance to old furniture, which until recently you just wanted to throw away.

Vertical gardening on a grid

An interesting option for creating flower beds and beds of this type can also be a construction from a construction mesh, which you can do yourself. So, a do-it-yourself vertical garden bed using a grid that is available at every summer cottage.

We know several ways at once that will help you complete such a project:

  • Bed in a special design. You can make it simply, for example, roll the mesh into a pipe of the required diameter. When such a form is ready, you need to lay straw under the walls, and fill the rest of the space with compost. In such a container, several types of crops can be grown at once, for example, potatoes and annual flowers. It should only be clearly understood that many crops are not recommended to be grown in the same soil;
  • Vertical Mesh Stand. To build a stand from a mesh, you can take the mesh itself and dense polyethylene as a basis. We immediately warn you that due to the fragility of such materials, the structure will live no more than a few years, but this is quite enough, especially considering the minimal investment in beauty. You need to install the grid, choosing a shape, put several layers of polyethylene inside, between which you spill the substrate. Of course, it will not work to grow strawberries or tomatoes in this way, but it is very easy to arrange original flower beds throughout the site;
  • Mesh Stand for Hanging Plants. Also, you can create a stand for small boxes and pots, in which, for example, seedlings or greens are grown. For this mission, you will need a thicker mesh so that it can withstand the weight of all the plants installed on it. Further, you can place absolutely any plants in pots of small mass along its plane.

Vertical flower beds

Many of us have seen a wide variety of figures built from flower pots. And, what is most interesting, the vast majority of them are made by skilled summer residents with their own hands. You can easily enter into their number if you only pay attention to the following idea.

So, we build vertical beds from flower pots.

The first method is very simple, because we will use 5-6 pots and a piece of reinforcement 100-120 cm long for its implementation.

Initially, the reinforcement is driven into the soil at the installation site of the structure, about half. Next, the first pot is put on the armature. It is filled with soil after installation in the desired position. Next, the plant is planted, the next pot is put on, covered with soil and populated by the plant. This continues until you set the pots up to the edge of the rebar.

The second way of working with flower pots is more interesting, since the figure can be not only vertical, but also voluminous. To create a new small architectural form in the dacha landscape, we choose an old tree that does not bear fruit and which can be partially removed. We remove dry and long branches from it, leaving only a shaped trunk. It is with him that we will work further.

Along the trunk and main branches, we place light plastic pots that can be screwed onto self-tapping screws or special strips. Next, fill the pots with the substrate and plant inside the plants, preferably bright flowers. As a result, having spent only a dozen or one and a half pots and seedlings or flower seeds, you get an unusual garden decoration that no one else in the area has.

Create vertical beds from a bag

Old bags, briefcases and plain bags may not be the most durable, but certainly the most remarkable containers for planting.

Such accessories, which can be hung almost anywhere, are done quite quickly and become a very creative decoration of the territory, especially if you carefully work with the style. The only thing is that you should choose plants that do not really like moisture, so that you do not have to water them often and thereby reduce the life of the hanging beds.

The simplest such accessory can be made from a piece of burlap or a ready-made bag of small sizes. Inside, you should place a bag of dense polyethylene and fasten it with burlap staples to establish several levels of soil inside. Otherwise, the soil will crumble to the very bottom and the bag will take a not very pretty shape. It is also worth making holes on the back of the bag so that the moisture does not stagnate, and the roots of the planted plants have the opportunity to ventilate.

After the formation of the cavity of the bag, it wakes up with compost or dry substrate, and is also planted with plants that freely tolerate drought.

If you can choose the right plants for planting, installing a plastic bag inside will be an optional condition, because many plants will take root much better without it.

As vertical gardening, connecting cement-concrete couplings, which are for cable pipes and of small diameter, can be suitable. They can also be laid out as a retaining wall and painted in various colors. Or, if separately, veneer with pieces of tiles.

I like the idea of pipes. Cheap, done quickly. I'll plant a petunia. You can also “play” with large plastic bottles. You can insert them into each other, and attach to something, compose a composition.

All my life I have dreamed of doing something like this. I have a 6 acre garden. There is a house and a garage on it, and we still need to make beds for a playground for children. There is not enough space. And this option is very convenient and saves precious area of the garden plot.
Approximately according to the same principle, I was going to plant potatoes, but there was not enough time. Now that I have retired, I will definitely take care of the vertical beds.

Not so long ago I cooked the “Vegetable Mix” stew (I didn’t even know that it was called that - I just threw in vegetables that matched each other, thinking that I had discovered a new recipe), but without adding mushrooms. “Bean mood” has never been cooked, but perhaps it is worth a try. I have one secret simple recipe for stew, however, it is not for everybody. Spicy lover. Cut three ripe zucchini, grate two carrots and add garlic. Well, salt and pepper to taste, of course. You can also add vinegar (this is my personal love for sour).

I try to always have vegetables on the menu. I often cook “Vegetable Mix” in the winter season, when the choice of natural vegetables is small. But with the onset of summer, a lot of garden gifts are introduced into the stew: zucchini, green peas. patissons, young carrots, eggplants. This dish is always equally tasty and healthy, and the ingredients can be added at your discretion.

In order to regularly receive a quality harvest and effectively protect plantings from soil pests, it is important to correctly organize a plot for the cultivation of vegetables and berries. Some plants are quite finicky, so they require specific conditions for normal growth and development.

Among these crops is everyone's favorite strawberry. In order to increase productivity, many gardeners, instead of arranging classic rows with garden strawberries, prefer to experiment by creating interesting options for beds. Gardeners who love experiments will be interested to learn how to make vertical beds and what agrotechnical requirements should be taken into account.

If you show a little imagination, then instead of randomly planting the entire backyard territory with fruit and vegetable crops, you can create hanging, voluminous or vertical beds for growing various plants with your own hands in the country. In addition, such a simple solution as the use of vertical space allows you to maximize the use of a small area of land.

Often, Russian gardeners have at their disposal the traditional six acres of land, where you want to see not only beds and greenhouses, but also beautiful flower beds. In such cases, it is definitely worth starting to practice, in addition to the usual horizontal placement of plantings, vertical cultivation of cultivated and ornamental plants.

Original ideas for giving

Advantages of non-standard options for arranging a garden:

How to grow tomatoes according to the Maslov method

These designs are easy to make with your own hands from worn tires, old bags, plastic weirs, leftover lumber, slate and other improvised materials that are sure to be found in any summer cottage.

Features of strawberry cultivation

When growing strawberries, the dimensions of the beds are of no small importance. The traditional option for planting garden strawberries, in addition to arranging ordinary rows with berries, involves a carpet or nesting method of planting. It is advisable to use such technology if you equip high plantations. Gardeners who appear on plots only occasionally are best suited for planting berries with a carpet.

This method contributes to the formation of a special microclimate due to the formation of natural mulch on the ground during the growth of plants. In this case, there is no need for frequent watering and nutritional fertilizing. But it should be borne in mind that if the number of rosettes in the field increases, in parallel with this, the size of the fruit will become smaller and smaller.

The size of the beds for garden strawberries

To get large fruits and increase the yield of strawberries, it is enough to observe a number of simple conditions:

Too close planting of strawberry bushes in order to save space can slow down the growth of berries, create difficulties in weeding and provoke the development of infections.

Features of vertical beds

At first glance, the use of vertical structures for the cultivation of strawberry crops may seem something exotic. But for many gardeners, the implementation of such technology has several weighty arguments in its defense, namely:

  • rational use of land for landing in reasonable economy mode;
  • the most comfortable plant care- vertical placement of landings automatically reduces the load on the spine and joints, since there is no need to regularly bend down;
  • limited interaction of plantings with the soil, which minimizes the risk of root rot and the spread of diseases caused by fungus and mold;
  • decorative function of the vertical garden.

However, vertical landing has two rather significant disadvantages:

  • rapid freezing of the soil of hanging containers, and not all plant varieties can boast of good resistance to the influence of such a factor as cold earth;
  • the need to resort to frequent irrigation and almost weekly top dressing.

To reduce the number of irrigations, agronomists recommend using a special hydrogel to dilute the soil substrate.

Varieties of solutions

Properly selected designs greatly facilitate the cultivation of berries. In addition, many options for beds become an organic continuation of landscape design, acting as decorative elements.

Vertical structures from plastic bottles

This option is the fastest, simplest and most cost effective. To build a vertical strawberry garden, any number of the most common 2-liter plastic bottles is taken.

Sequence of work:

  • Remove labels and rinse plastic containers thoroughly.
  • Cut an even rectangle on the side of the bottle, and a sufficient number of drainage holes on the opposite side.
  • In the upper part, stepping back from the neck about 2-2.5 cm, and in the lower, closer to the base of the container, pierce through the hole through which then stretch the rope or fishing line. At the ends of the rope, it is necessary to tie a washer or nut to prevent the bottles from breaking and falling under the weight of the soil.
  • For horizontal mounting of finished modules on the wall, it is best to use a strong wire.
  • Pour a mixture of drainage with soil into plastic containers and plant seedlings of garden strawberries.

When it is planned to plant plants with a small root system in a greenhouse pavilion, then for these purposes you can also make hanging beds from plastic bottles with your own hands. It is enough to cut a “window” in the container for a seedling, and make a couple more cutouts on the sides of the hole to secure the rope. Homemade pots are simply hung on nails to the walls. It will be equally convenient for flower seedlings and greenery to grow in them before planting in open ground.

Structures made of PVC or metal-plastic pipes

The undeniable advantages of using plastic or metal-plastic for arranging vertical beds for open ground plants or in a greenhouse:

  • these materials will definitely not rot;
  • they have high resistance to internal corrosion damage;
  • no need to additionally treat the structures with paint or chemical impregnation: the white surface eliminates strong heating.

To create such a composition, a pair of plastic pipes with different thread diameters is taken - 1/2 and 3/4 inches. The preferred length of the pipes is 2–2.5 m, this will allow them to be thoroughly buried in the ground and provide greater stability to the makeshift bed.

Sequence of work:

Irrigation in vertical beds is carried out through the upper hole according to the principle of drip irrigation. Why before backfilling with earth a thin tube with a smaller diameter is inserted inside the pipe, on the upper part of which a series of holes are made in advance. With this method of planting, one irrigation system can be equipped with several tubes at once.

Advantages of using vertical pipe beds in greenhouses:

  • no need to carry out weeding, waste time and effort on an endless fight against weeds;
  • guaranteed increase in the rate of maturation of plants and productivity;
  • convenient to harvest without damaging the stems;
  • the root system of green pets is reliably protected from damage by soil pests.
  • Advantages of "bag" beds:

    • the possibility of harvesting a rich harvest, even if you use a small greenhouse area;
    • creation of optimal conditions for the growth of strawberries, since the sun will evenly and in sufficient quantities fall on the sockets;

    The best planting material for this original method of growing berries are young bushes from last year's strawberry mustache.

    The second life of car tires

    Tire beds are another common and popular option for organizing comfortable seats for garden strawberries, flowers and other cultivated plants. It is worth knowing that worn-out tires are not environmentally friendly and, as many mistakenly believe, a harmless material: rubber will definitely release toxic compounds into the ground.

    flowerbed tower

    You will need to prepare tires with different diameters, a soil substrate, a chisel and a wooden block.

    Sequencing:

    in the shape of a pyramid

    To implement this idea, you will need to take 3 or 4 tires with different diameters.

    Work order:

    • On the one hand, all tires are cut off the tread.
    • The largest tire will serve as the base of the pyramid. A mesh is laid on the ground, then the substrate is poured, after which you can proceed to the arrangement of the second and subsequent tiers in a similar way.
    • When the pyramid is ready, holes for strawberries are prepared in the ground, the ground needs to be moistened and bushes planted.

    Multi-tiered structures made of car tires can be painted with bright colors and decorated with clay figurines. Such designs look very original, and most importantly, you can not be afraid that your neighbors will have the same one, as often happens with purchased decor elements.

Growing berries and spices in compact vertical beds is becoming more and more popular. This is due to a number of factors, such as: space saving, decorative appearance, protection of berries from various pests and birds. In the article, we will consider how to create inexpensive, but original do-it-yourself vertical beds from various materials.

Advantages and disadvantages of vertical beds

A vertical bed is an excellent replacement for conventional plantings, which take up quite a lot of space on the site. Vertical structures are ideal for growing strawberries, strawberries, herbs or flowers.

Advantages

  • To date, craftsmen have come up with many design options for vertical beds, but their compactness remains an invariable advantage of all types. And this applies not only to small garden plots. Even on the balcony, by creating a light construction from plastic bottles, you can get an excellent harvest of a variety of aromatic herbs and berries.
  • The next advantage of vertical beds is their easy care. Due to the fact that seedlings or crops are quite high, when weeding or harvesting, you do not need to bend low and “tear” your back.
  • Equipping these beds in the country, the roots of plants and berries rise high from the ground, which contributes to their safety from small pests and rodents. And thanks to the pyramidal or cylindrical shape of the structure, birds cannot land on them and eat the crop.
  • Such beds are especially attractive for children. Not only are they enthusiastic about helping to care for them, but they can also eat the berries straight from the bush, as there is no need to pre-wash them.

disadvantages

  • Vertical beds need frequent watering. From a lack of moisture, plants in containers will die faster than similar varieties in open ground. True, this shortcoming can be corrected, but this will require additional financial investments. Below are two ways:
    • hydrogel, which is sold in any garden or flower shop. It is brought into the ground, dug up and, in the soil prepared in this way, plants are planted. The gel has the ability to accumulate and retain moisture, and if necessary, the plants will take it away;
    • arrangement of drip irrigation. More expensive, but at the same time more effective way. Besides, you can do it yourself.
  • Due to the small containers for vertical beds, only undersized plants will feel good in them, and even those will need active feeding with nutrients.
  • When planting perennials in vertical beds, one must take into account that even in central Russia in winter the ground freezes in them, which causes the entire root system to die. Therefore, when planting strawberries, containers should be insulated for the winter.

Before you start building a vertical bed on your site, you should familiarize yourself with a number of valuable tips:

  • large structures of vertical beds must be assembled immediately at a permanent place, otherwise problems may arise with their transportation;

  • it is better to place a bed for greenery closer to the kitchen, but with berries only in the sun;
  • the soil for filling containers is prepared in advance. For example, a vertical bed for strawberries is filled with a mixture of peat, sandy soil, hydrogel and fertilizer (rotted compost is perfect);
  • it is better to place it closer to the water source, as it will often need to be watered;
  • it is also necessary to immediately foresee how the design of the vertical bed for the winter will be protected. Will she be brought into the house, covered with spruce branches, etc.

Vertical beds from plastic bottles

This is an inexpensive, affordable and, as a result, the most popular way to create a vertical bed.

First way

The height of such a modular design can constantly vary, depending on the amount of planting material. For its arrangement you will need:

  • plastic bottles (at least 2 liters in volume);
  • wire;
  • wire cutters;
  • sharp knife;
  • a frame for fixing containers (it can be either metal or wooden);
  • paint and brush (optional)

Stages of work

  • The plastic bottle is peeled off the label and cut (see diagram below).
  • The lid is twisted, but loosely, so that excess moisture has the opportunity to drain down.
  • The upper part with a lid is filled with nutrient soil (preferably with hydrogel) and a plant is planted in it.
  • Everything is placed in the cut off bottom part. Thus, a module is obtained, which is attached to a prepared strong frame with a wire.

  • For a more decorative look, the bottles can be painted with acrylic paint or painted with various patterns.

Second way

With the help of homemade containers from plastic bottles, you can plant any vertical surface.

To create them you will need:

  • plastic bottles with a volume of 2 - 2.5 liters;
  • washers (twice as many bottles);
  • awl;
  • strong rope.

Stages of work

  • The bottle is cleared of labels.
  • With a sharp knife, a small rectangular hole is cut from the side of the bottle.
  • At the bottom of the resulting "pot" holes are made for drainage.
  • Near the bottom of the bottle and neck, an awl is pierced through one through hole, and a rope is threaded through them. It is very important to make a strong and sufficient knot under the hole so that the module does not fall on the bottom row under the weight of the earth.
  • The design is mounted exclusively on a horizontal surface, and only in finished form is attached to the wall.
  • Each container is filled with expanded clay and earth, stunted and unpretentious plants are planted in it.

How to make a vertical garden from PVC pipes

Most often, such beds are used for growing strawberries and strawberries.

What you need for work:

  • PVC pipe with a diameter of 150 mm;
  • PVC pipe with a diameter of 100 mm and longer than a pipe with a larger diameter by 15 cm;
  • plug or reinforced tape;
  • chisel and drill;
  • burlap or non-woven fabric and strong rope;
  • for planting - soil, drainage and planting material.

Stages of work

  • At the beginning, the pipes are cut to the required height (not forgetting that the smaller diameter pipe is left 10-15 cm longer than the main one).
  • A narrow pipe is intended for watering plants, so holes are drilled on it, in the upper part, for water seepage.
  • To protect against clogging, the watering pipe should be wrapped with non-woven material or burlap and tightly wound with a rope. The lower end, where there are no holes, is closed with adhesive tape.

  • Now it's time to drill holes for the plants in the larger pipe. They are made using a drill with a special nozzle. The optimal size is 15 cm, and the location is 20-25 cm apart. At the bottom, it is necessary to leave an indent from the ground of 15-20 cm.
  • A plug is put on the pipe prepared in this way, and the structure is installed vertically. You will also need to securely attach it to a wall, fence or any other vertical support.
  • A narrow watering pipe is placed in it, and the gap between them is filled with gravel or expanded clay by 10-15 cm.
  • The rest of the space is densely covered with earth and spilled in stages so that there are no layers of air left. Now it remains only to plant the strawberry bushes in the holes.

  • All further care consists in regular watering through a narrow pipe. Also, all fertilizers will be applied exclusively in liquid form.

Vertical flower bed

For growing undersized or ampelous annual flowers, a vertical flower bed is perfect. To create them you will need:

  • several flower pots;
  • timber or metal pipe for the frame;
  • soil and seedlings.

Stages of work

  • If heavy ceramic pots are used for the construction, then they should be installed in turn, starting with the largest and ending with the smallest and lightest. Due to the large weight of the entire structure together with the ground, there is no need to install a frame.
  • When light plastic pots are used for a vertical ridge, you will need to first fix the metal base, on which, through the drainage hole, the pots will be put on.

  • To give the plants as much living space as possible, pots should be staggered.

Vertical bed made of plastic bag

You can make such a compact vertical bed even at home. For this you will need:

  • extra strong film, not less than 0.2 mm thick;
  • sewing machine;
  • sharp knife;
  • soil and seedlings.

Stages of work

  • First, two rectangles are cut to the size of the future vertical beds, but with an allowance of 1.5-2 cm on each side. The optimal diameter for growing herbs or strawberries is about 20 cm.
  • They are sewn together (or soldered with a special soldering iron). A strong handle is sewn to them, which must withstand the weight of a bag of earth.
  • The resulting bag is densely filled with nutrient-rich earth.
  • After that, cuts are made for planting seedlings (the distance between them should be 20 cm).
  • Seedlings are planted in them.
  • Further care is regular watering with the addition of fertilizers.

Creating a vertical garden in the form of a pyramid

To create one pyramidal bed you will need:

  • edged board 20x5x240 cm - 11 pcs.;
  • hacksaw or jigsaw;
  • screwdriver and screws;
  • tape measure, pencil;
  • soil and seedlings.

Stages of work

  • First of all, you need to make the base of the pyramid in the form of four support boards. To do this, a two-meter board is taken, an acute angle is cut off on one side, so that it is convenient to fasten them to each other.

Tip: for greater structural rigidity, an additional support column can be installed in the center of the pyramid.

  • Next, two two-meter boards with cut corners are placed on a horizontal surface and fastened together. At their base, the first rail is placed to form the future beds and is also screwed on both sides. Its size is 5x5x40 cm.
  • The resulting side of the pyramid is installed vertically, and the second and third sides, made in the same way, are attached to it.
  • On the already finished pyramid, the length of the slats is calculated with a tape measure to create the beds. They should be located along the height of the vertical beds at a distance of 25-30 cm from each other.

  • At the rails prepared along the length, corners of 30 degrees are cut so that the shelf in the structure is located at an angle.
  • The finished structure is filled in order with earth, which is tightly compacted. On a vertical bed in the form of a pyramid, there is enough soil for growing not only strawberries, but also for larger vegetable crops.

Vertical garden from downpipes

This type of vertical bed is suitable for growing herbs or ampelous annual flowers.

You will need:

  • downpipes of the required length;
  • two plugs for each pipe;
  • wire;
  • fasteners.

Stages of work

  • First of all, plugs are put on the drainpipes on both sides, thereby obtaining a container in the form of a long planter.
  • Next, metal holders are put on, with the help of which the suspension system of the structure will be attached.
  • Holes are made in the pipe on both sides in the area of \u200b\u200bmetal fasteners, a strong cable is threaded through them and fixed from below with fasteners.
  • The bed is filled with expanded clay and earth, after which plants are planted in it.

Tip: this design does not have a rigid frame, so it should be placed in a place where there is no strong wind.

Vertical bed of car tires

Due to the low environmental friendliness of tires, it is not recommended to grow berries or herbs in them. But for creating a vertical flower bed, this is a great option.

For work you will need:

  • several different tires;
  • chisel;
  • wooden block;
  • soil and plants.

Stages of work

  • Due to the metal cord in the tire rim, there is no need for carcass equipment.
  • First, holes are made for plants using a chisel. The tire is laid on a block, and “windows” are punched from the inside with a wide chisel in several places.
  • After that, it is installed in a permanent place and covered with soil.
  • All subsequent tires are prepared in the same way and placed in a pyramid to the required height. Here it must be borne in mind that it will be inconvenient to water a too high vertical bed.
  • When the entire structure is mounted and filled with earth, seedlings are planted and watered.

There is another way to create a vertical tire bed. It will require:

  • several tires of different diameters;
  • soil and seedlings.

Stages of work

  • There is no need to make holes in car tires. They are simply exposed in the form of a pyramid, starting with the largest diameter and ending with the smallest.
  • At the very top, you can install a flower pot.
  • The soil must be filled in stages, after the installation of each of the tires.

Vertical beds from old pallets

This is a good solution for landscaping a terrace or patio. To create it you will need:

  • pallet;
  • garden mesh (preferably rigid);
  • straw or non-woven material;
  • soil and seedlings.

Stages of work

  • First of all, the wooden pallet must be treated with a protective compound or painted with varnish based on drying oil.
  • On the reverse side, a mesh or non-woven fabric is nailed. In the first case, it will be necessary to close the cells with straw to prevent the soil from spilling out.
  • The resulting container is filled with earth and plants are planted in it.

Vertical beds photo

If you want something new in your summer cottage, but there is not too much space, create vertical beds for your favorite crops. They can be organized even on the loggia, providing yourself with a wonderful diet of vegetables and herbs without leaving your home. We present several available options on how to create beds with cheap and simply improvised materials with your own hands.

Vertical beds from pipes

A plastic pipe, cut or whole, is well suited for the manufacture of vertical beds.

Pylons

This type of planting can be successfully used for strawberries, healthy greens or flowers.

Manufacturing scheme:

  • Take two plastic pipes - the maximum and minimum diameter, the same length. The wide one will serve as a bed, the narrow one will be the basis for drip irrigation.
  • In a thick pipe, mark and cut holes for future planting. Make holes, stepping back from the upper edge of the pipe 15 cm. Make the distance between them approximately 20 cm.
  • Do not make holes 10-15 cm from the ground level. A plug is installed there from a solution of clay and cement or another water-resistant building mixture or material. The structure is supposed to be attached to a fence or wall.
  • Drill as many holes as possible of 4-5 mm each in a pipe of narrow diameter, as well as in a large one, stepping back 15 cm from above and at least 10 from below. A plastic, metal or rubber pipe is taken.
  • Wrap it with any moisture-permeable material so that the small holes do not clog with soil, and pull it with twine.
  • Close the bottom with a waterproof cap.
  • Put a funnel on top of a narrow pipe to make watering easier.
  • Prepare the soil by adding hydrogel and crushed foam to it, which will not allow the earth to compact.
  • Carefully insert the small tube into the large one.
  • Supporting the small one exactly in the center, throw three clays on the bottom of the shovel, then gravel or expanded clay to the level of the holes.
  • Gradually fill the entire internal space between the pipes with planting soil, while planting plants. It is advisable to briefly dip the seedling roots before this in a mash of clay and manure. This way they will retain moisture better. Each next "layer" of landings spills.
  • Pour water into the inner pipe.

It is not bad to make a crosspiece from wooden slats or a metal rod, on which to fix the base of a narrow pipe. Due to this, it will “walk” less when inserted into a large pipe.

You can watch the video for more details on the process of making a vertical garden bed from pipes. In cold climatic zones, they are combined into one frame so that in winter it is easy to clean in a warm place. Or laid on the ground and insulated.

This option is best suited for greenery. A large plastic pipe is cut lengthwise. At both ends of each half, the edges are bent or reinforced with “plugs” so that the soil does not spill out. Also, holes are made along the edges, a steel cable is threaded through them, and the structure is hung or fixed on the wall. The space of the beds is covered with earth and plants are arranged. You can make any number of levels.

The lightweight structure is prone to rocking, so it should be hung out in a calm part of the site.

Simple and cheap vertical beds can be created from plastic bottles. There are also several ways to place landings.

Placement in vertical containers. A bottle with a capacity of at least 2 liters is cut across. A half is taken with a lid, which is twisted a little bit not completely. It overturns and soil with hydrogel is poured into it. The plant takes root. The resulting "bed" is placed in the lower section of the bottle. Everything is wired. To improve the garden interior, bottle containers are sometimes painted. Also, homemade beds can be arranged in the order shown in the photo.

Placement in a horizontal way . Bottles are also cleared of labels. With a sharp knife, make a rectangular hole in the side surface. Poke small holes along the bottom of the resulting container to drain excess water from the roots. Pour expanded clay or sand on top of the ground. It is possible to grow undersized plants that do not require special care. It is reasonable to hang such bottles in a vertical bed on ropes or decorate a wall in the country with them.

Wall plantings can be arranged in "pockets" of burlap, spunbond or canvas. A good material for such a "garden" will be foil insulation, which on hot days, thanks to the reflective layer, will perfectly protect the root system of plantings. Let's see how to make it yourself:

  • Purchase foil insulation the size of double the length of the beds.
  • Folding in half, sew a horizontal line, stepping back 7 cm from the top. The resulting hole (drawstring) will be needed in the future to pull the twine or rope.
  • Sew on the sewing machine all the edges (not reaching the top by 7 centimeters) and the bottom. You get almost a bag.
  • Draw the entire surface into future pockets.
  • Stitch everything marked.
  • Cut the tops of the pockets in a semicircle, retreating from the seam by 4 cm.
  • Insert a tube into the drawstring at the top and pull a rope or twine through it.
  • Tie the twine into a knot with a loop. For it, hang the entire "bed" to the vertical.
  • Mix the soil with the hydrogel and pour into pockets.
  • Water well and plant seedlings or seeds.

Such "bags" are equally suitable for cucumbers, herbs and even low tomatoes. Beautifully arrange flowers in them.

Such beds can be constructed from dense plastic bags or films. Having twisted the material in several places, they get "pockets" suitable for filling with earth, and therefore for growing plants. Mounted on the surface of the house or fence with a chain-link mesh.

A more decorative than practical function is performed by vertically arranged beds of flower pots.

  • You can put them one on top of the other, placing the largest one at the bottom, and the smaller one at the top. Each to fill up with earth and plant something. There isn't much room to grow, but it looks nice.
  • Pots of the same diameter (only the bottom largest) are strung on a metal stick or rod. Here it is important to choose the diameter of the base, which should be slightly smaller than that of the pots. Then fill with earth.
  • If there is a pole or similar structure (but not a living tree) within the allotment, plant-filled pots can be attached to it in an "artistic mess". Watering is not very convenient, but the design is aesthetic.

The simplest vertical structures

Simple vertical structures can be made from what is usually thoughtlessly thrown away. On the site, this will come in handy as containers for plants.

Fitting car tires . Free beds are made from used car tires. Best of all, flowers, strawberries or greens will grow here. The environmental friendliness of such structures suffers, but when planting food plants, the tire should be washed with hot water or used for one season.

Before planting, the tires are trimmed for ease of planting. A “slide” or other structure is made in which the earth will hold. First, sand, pebbles or expanded clay is poured inside, then soil. Planting crops.

You can make one strictly vertical rack out of tires, cut holes in the sides of which and plant seedlings.

Old furniture - in business . Old chests of drawers with lots of drawers will work great. They need to be sanded and painted first. After that, pull out to the desired length and fix the boxes. Next, fill the soil - and the house for the plants is ready.

Don't forget about soil drainage!

Features of care on vertical beds

Vertical beds have their own care characteristics, without the knowledge of which it will be problematic to grow anything in them.

  • Not all plants are ready to "live" in a limited soil space. Planting crops is carried out only with a small root system, in particular berries, cucumbers, onions and others.
  • The soil dries out quickly, so you need to water the plants every day. When this is not possible, organize drip irrigation or mix hydrogel into the soil.
  • Top dressing is needed twice a week.
  • For the winter, vertical beds are brought into heat or annual plants are grown in them.

Even with some difficulties, working with vertical beds is easier. The soil is less affected by infections, weeds are rare, less chemicals are required. An additional pleasure will be the ability to care for plants without bending your back. With proper care, the beds, "grown in height", will become a source of good mood and excellent harvest.
