Make a coffee table out of chipboard. DIY coffee table

Even a novice craftsman can make a table with his own hands from chipboard, and this is not surprising, because chipboard is easy to process, reliable and affordable. In order to make a simple design, it is enough to purchase the necessary materials, pick up tools and suitable drawings.

Chipboard properties

Chipboard is widely used in furniture production, because it has a number of advantages over wood, plastic and other materials. So, it is distinguished by low cost, ease of processing, resistance to moisture and mechanical damage, strength, heat resistance (you can put coffee pots and hot pans on it).

This material does not delaminate and does not disintegrate during processing, so dowels and screws can be screwed into it. Chipboard has a pleasant appearance - it looks like natural wood. Now on the market, the material is presented in a wide range of colors and patterns, which allows you to choose the option that suits any interior.

But the chipboard also has disadvantages. So, it contains formaldehyde resins, which adversely affect the human body. In addition, it cannot be subjected to deep milling (it will begin to crack), so it will not work to cut a beautiful pattern on it.

When choosing chipboard for tables (especially in a children's room), you need to pay attention to the following parameters:

  1. degree of toxicity. Chipboard comes in 3 classes: E1, E2 E3. Each class allows the content of a certain amount of formaldehyde, only class E1 can be used to assemble furniture. In order not to make a mistake with the choice, it is better to purchase material from trusted manufacturers. If the buyer buys laminated chipboard from little-known suppliers, then he needs to do an analysis of the material on his own. To do this, just get close to the product in the store. If the formaldehyde content is increased, then an unpleasant odor will be felt at a distance of one meter from the bag. Suspicion should also arise if a pleasant aroma emanates from the product. This may be evidence that manufacturers are trying to hide the smell of formaldehyde.
  2. Strength indicators. The main indicator is the density of the material - the denser it is, the stronger it is. In the figure, you can see a product with a high density (left) and a lower density (right). The optimal density is 650-660 kg / m 3. Before buying a tile, you need to inspect it from both sides; you can try to push a screwdriver or other object into its end. It will not work to push the object into dense material.

It should also be remembered that some manufacturers cover chipboard not with laminate, but with paper. Such a fake can be identified by stroking the surface of the plate with your hand (the buyer will be able to feel with his fingers that this is paper, not laminate).

simple desk

The easiest way for a novice master is to assemble a simple chipboard table for an office or a children's room.

For work, you will need a drawing of the future product with all dimensions, as well as materials and tools:

  1. Four sheets of laminated chipboard: 1300x60 mm for the lid, 1170x400 for the inner wall, 2 sheets 450x740 for the end walls.
  2. Confirmants for connecting parts, caps for nail heads, end edges. To twist confirmations, you will need a drill of suitable length and diameter.
  3. Hand tools: ruler, square, tape measure, hammer, knife, screwdriver, furniture stapler, pliers, clamps, hex key for confirmations.
  4. Circular electric saw.
  5. Reversible electric drill or screwdriver.
  6. An electric jigsaw that allows you to fit parts to size.
  7. Sander or sandpaper.
  8. Workbench for installing a removable vice.

First you need to purchase a laminated board in a hardware store. It is advisable to go to the hypermarket with a drawing of the future product; the dimensions of all parts should be indicated on the diagram. You can cut out the necessary elements from a sheet of laminated chipboard yourself using a jigsaw, but this requires appropriate skills and time. You can order cut-to-size directly from the supplier of the material, for this it is enough to provide him with a drawing of the future design.

On the ends of the prepared parts of the table, you need to stick a decorative edge, for this, the edge must be attached to the end of the sheet and run over it with a heated iron. The heat-sensitive adhesive on the back of the decorative strip will melt and ensure it is securely attached to the end. Edgebanding of parts can also be ordered from material suppliers.

At the next stage, using a drill, you need to drill holes in the future legs of the table. The top hole should be 50mm from the top edge of the leg and the second hole drilled 300mm below. The distance from the long edge of the slab to the hole should be equal to half the thickness of the inner wall. So, if its thickness is 26, then the hole must be drilled at a distance of approximately 13 mm from the edge.

Then you need to take a slightly larger drill and use it to make a shallow groove over the hole for confirmations. The head of the fastener will be deepened into this groove.

The transverse partition is attached to the legs with holes and is attached to them with furniture screws. The tabletop is placed on top of the base and screwed with confirmats, under which holes are pre-drilled. The screw heads recessed into the laminated chipboard are closed with special plugs. A simple desk is completely ready.

This model is characterized by functionality and large dimensions, while the corner table occupies an unused area of the room, making room for other furniture. It is very easy to make this item. You need to buy sheets of laminated chipboard or MDF and ask the store employees to cut them according to the pattern.

The work begins with the fact that all visible sections of the future product are cleaned with sandpaper, and then pasted over with a decorative edge. Pasting, if desired, can also be ordered at a hardware store. The side walls are connected to the back wall with nails or self-tapping screws. Under the fasteners, you need to pre-drill holes, their diameter should be slightly less than the thickness of the fasteners themselves.

Then you need to turn the countertop upside down and mark the places where the dowels are attached. After that, deep, but not through holes are drilled in the appropriate places. Dowels should be greased with glue and attached with their help the top cover to the base. After complete drying, the product can be used for its intended purpose.

Furniture for kitchen

Do-it-yourself chipboard tabletop can be used not only in the office, but also in the kitchen. The technical characteristics of the chipboard allow it to be used in conditions of high humidity and temperature differences.

For work you will need:

  • plastic-coated worktop canvas 3000 long, 600 wide and 36 or 26 mm thick;
  • end and connecting strips;
  • end edges and ties;
  • supports.

The legs can be made independently from a bar or purchased ready-made. The most popular option is round chrome legs with a diameter of 60 and a height of 71 mm. They can be shiny, matte or painted, even height-adjustable legs are sold.

First of all, it is necessary to apply markings on the future tabletop; at the corners, roundings with a radius of at least 60 mm should be made. Then the countertop is given the necessary shape using an electric jigsaw.

It is advisable to use a saw with reverse teeth, otherwise chips may appear on the plastic coating. First, the corners must be cut with a jigsaw with a margin of 2 mm, and then rounded off with a grinder.

After that, you need to process the ends of the table cover. This operation allows not only to improve the appearance of the product, but also to protect the base from moisture. To work, you need an edge tape or furniture edging made of polyvinyl chloride. The best option is a plastic mortise T-shaped edging with girths.

At the next stage, the groove for the furniture edge is milled. Depending on the thickness of the edge, milling is performed either in the center of the butt, or with a slight offset. The exact milling parameters are calculated after determining the edge geometry with a vernier caliper. Then the ends of the tabletop and the inside of the edge are covered with silicone sealant. After that, the edging is stuffed with a rubber mallet. Excess sealant is removed.

Now it remains to attach the legs. To do this, markings are made on the reverse side of the tabletop, it is recommended to place the legs at a distance of 100 mm from the edges. Self-tapping screws with countersunk heads about 20 mm long are used as fasteners. The legs are put on the holders and fixed with a hex wrench. The furniture is ready.

Coffee table

To create this simple design, only a drill, a screwdriver, self-tapping screws, confirmations and laminated chipboard sawn into suitable parts are needed.

The table will consist of:

  • countertops 736x700 mm;
  • 4 planks 464x100;
  • 2 shelves 700x500;
  • 4 legs or wheels;
  • 4 plastic corners;
  • 8 confirmations;
  • 16 self-tapping screws 3.5x16;
  • melamine edging or ABS.

Shelves and countertops can be cut out yourself using fine-pitch wood files. An easier option is to purchase materials cut into suitable pieces at a hardware store.

All end elements must be glued with a decorative edge. Then the tabletop should be connected to the side strips using plastic corners and self-tapping screws. After that, a shelf is attached to the center of the racks. In order for it to hold firmly, it must be fixed with confirmations, under which holes are first made with a 4.5 drill.

At the next stage, the bottom is attached to the vertical slats in the same way. After that, the table is equipped with wheels or legs made of chipboard. Supports are recommended to be attached at a distance of 15 mm from the edges of the product. This completes the work, the table is ready for use.

Making furniture with your own hands is not only a way to save money, but also an exciting thing. You can bring to life the most daring ideas, for example, create a coffee table. After all, this is not only a stylish accent in the interior, but also a functional element of the room.

The procedure for making a table at home is as follows:

  • We take a bar with a section of 5x10 cm, saw it into three parts, several pieces each. For example: the length of the first part is 130 cm, it is necessary to cut 9 pieces of beams with this length. The length of the second part is 21 cm - 12 pieces. The length of the third part is 34 cm - 2 pieces. You can first make a drawing of the table.
  • The beam is placed in three rows. At this stage, it is necessary to leave a small gap in order to place the legs of the table there later.
  • We remove two rows from the top. We begin to move the rest of the beam. So the table will get an original appearance. Then we make markings for the transverse parts.
  • We lay the extreme bars of the second row and put marks for cuts. Cuts can be made with a hacksaw or saw. Then we fix the bars with screws.
  • Let's move on to the third row. Slightly shift the details and fix them.
  • Empty spaces appeared under the tabletop. They are for legs.
  • The table must be treated with a protective compound.

Original coffee tables

Every person wants to have an unusual table in their apartment so that it fits into the interior of the room and pleases the eye. This piece of furniture can be made from any material: wood, chipboard, boxes, etc. Let's look at a few of these options.

Waste paper table

If there are old magazines and newspapers in the house, there is no need to rush to throw them away - perhaps they will serve you as material for the table. True, the design of the interior should be appropriate. By making furniture in this way, you can choose the desired and convenient table height for you. Process making tables from old newspapers and magazines growth:

  • We take waste paper and turn it into a tube, fix it with rubber bands.
  • We dilute the water-polymer emulsion. And put folded paper in it for 2-7 minutes.
  • Then we dry the paper.
  • We glue the fart cabinet with glue, you can take PVA. Dry in an upright position, securing with a thread in advance.
  • We make the markings of the strips and cut them off.
  • We glue the glass tabletop. The glass must be 12 mm thick.

Stylish log table

This method is more difficult in terms of execution than the previous one. The main elements for creating a table will be logs. The basis is a wooden box, preferably on wheels. After that, it must be furnished with logs. For marking, a home-made thickness gauge is also used. After sawing off all unnecessary elements, you do not need to throw away sawdust. It is better to collect them in any pallet. After that, the rounds are glued to the face. Sawdust must be mixed on liquid nails. The mixture should resemble plasticine. Using a spatula, it is necessary to wipe all the cracks between the rounds. Then, the product must be removed from all sawdust and dirt, sanded and varnished.

Creative side table

Make this table it will be difficult on your own, but still possible. The main thing is to follow the rules of manufacture. For the design, you must take any type of wood. You choose the height yourself. Such a property of wood as softening during dry heating is taken as the basis. Then the form is saved. More about manufacturing:

This table option is for those who love functionality and beauty in one item. With the help of simple manipulations, able to change height and appearance.

When assembled, this is a regular table for various waste paper. One has only to lift the two sidewalls with legs, as it changes its usual size and turns into a dining one.

The basis of another transforming system includes metal frame-pedestals. They are attached to the table top. In their usual position, that is, in the assembled position, they lie horizontally, it is worth changing the size, then the lid rises and rotates on hinges and melts vertically.

When unfolded, the size of the structure is 73 cm. This height is acceptable for a computer desk. Before making a transformer, you need to make a drawing.

DIY coffee table

To make a coffee table, you need to take a sheet of chipboard. Its thickness is 16 mm. Make a markup: find the center at the intersection of two diagonals. A nail is driven into the center, for which a thread with a pencil is tied. With it, you can draw a circle. If you want to make a table of a different shape, then draw bends. After that, the shape is cut out using a jigsaw. The edges must be sanded.

The legs of the table are attached with screws. Paint the tabletop in the color you want.

Table on wheels

If you have never made tables with your own hands, then you can try the easiest option. Consider the manufacture of a model from chipboard. For its manufacture does not need a lot of knowledge and skills and expensive materials.

You can order saw cut laminated chipboard.

For the manufacture of the structure you will need: a table top, planks, a shelf, a bottom, wheels, plastic corners, self-tapping screws, confirmations. When all the necessary materials are available, you can proceed with the assembly:

  • First you need to make a shelf.
  • Connect the tabletop and planks to the plastic corners. It turned out vertical strips, on which it is necessary to attach a shelf with the help of a confirmant. To keep her strong. the same must be done with the bottom.
  • Attach the wheels with screws.
  • At the very end, it is necessary to seal the attachment points with self-adhesives.

As we have already found out, it is not difficult to make a coffee table at home. The article presents options that everyone can handle. Over time, you will be able to create the most original designs.

The height of the coffee table according to GOST should not exceed 50 cm, but no one forbids adjusting it for yourself. For example, the height of the transformer can be 73 cm. It is also worth noting that the table should fit your interior. Making such a piece of furniture yourself is a fascinating process that will also save you money. A little imagination - and you already have an original product.

It will be useful in the living room, and in the bedroom, and in the children's room.

And in manufacturing it is quite simple - to make a coffee table with your own hands from chipboard is within the power of a novice home craftsman, a teenager who wants to learn carpentry or make a gift to his mother, and even an ordinary housewife.

The simplest coffee table design is a top and four legs.

Unfortunately, making four legs out of chipboard is a bad idea.

They get out of this position by using paired wide racks instead of legs, a rack on one side and a vertical wall on the other, using other solutions.

The most informative source where you can see DIY coffee table designs - photos from the Internet and ready-made manufacturing workshops.

There are many options for manufacturing - with rounded corners, with drawers on the side, with racks made of polished metal pipe, etc.

To make a coffee table you will need:

  • Wood saw
  • Square, ruler, carpenter's pencil and other marking tools
  • Drill and at least two drills - a large one for dowels, corresponding to their diameter, and a small one, with a diameter of 1-2 mm, for drilling holes for screws and for drilling with a large drill
  • Screwdriver
  • Hammer and mallet
  • Edge tape, special glue, if it is not self-adhesive, roller and iron for its fastening
  • Milling cutter for high-quality processing of the ends for the tape and carbide milling cutter for wood
  • Model knife for trimming the protruding edges of laminate or veneer and edging tape
  • Rasp to fit
  • Carpenter's bench, clamps and other accessories

You may need another tool, it all depends on what the master wants to get in the end. If there is a milling cutter, then with its help you can not only process the ends into a clean size, but also cut the material, however, there will be more waste.

As a drill, you can use a hand-held rotator, a hand-held drill, an electric drill and a screwdriver with sufficient rotation speed to work with a small drill.

Manufacturing technology

The first thing you need to have on hand before making a coffee table with your own hands from chipboard is drawings.

Usually they are performed after the design has been chosen.

They draw how the table will look from all sides with all sizes, then think over the carpentry connections and draw each detail separately.

After all the blueprints are completed, work begins. First, all the parts are cut out according to the drawings, then their connections are made.

The strength and quality of the joints are checked with a square, visually for gaps and backlashes. The table must be of high quality. If necessary, the fitting of parts is performed with a rasp, but it is better to do this with a milling cutter.

Paired parts, such as legs, can be processed together to make them the same.

Usually, after that, the open edges are processed clean and the edge tape is fastened. The tape is most often self-adhesive. It has a front layer of plastic and a back layer, which is smeared with glue and covered with a tear-off paper tape.

The tape is glued and rolled with a roller - the fastening, with the proper quality of the surface, is quite strong and durable.

Make sure that the tape goes straight, without distortions.

When it is glued, its excess is very carefully cut off with a knife.

It is best to use a tape that exactly matches the thickness of the chipboard, in this case there is no need for accurate trimming, but you need to work more accurately when attaching the tape to the product.

For a PVC film, an iron is used, on which a fluoroplastic gasket is attached. The film with the adhesive layer is heated with an iron and it should stick well.

In addition, the iron provides high-quality passage through corners and other places where it will bend, and it can also be used to slightly melt the film at the junction of the tapes to mask the junction. At the end, when the table is ready, wheels or small legs are screwed to the bottom board.

A coffee table is undoubtedly a useful and convenient thing. The furniture market today is full of offers of such tables made of chipboard, metal, glass and plastic. However, very often the consumer is looking for something special and exclusive, abandoning the standard options.

LCD tables have quite high prices, but, unlike other furniture, they are quite simple to make yourself.

For such consumers, there is also a solution: to make a coffee table with your own hands. This is not only an entertaining and interesting process, but also savings, because furniture assembled from chipboard will in any case be much cheaper than a store product.

Preparatory work

Before proceeding with the process of making a table, you need to decide on its type. After that, you should make drawings of each element and cut out patterns. The diagram below shows the relevant parameters. The following set of tools will help you create a coffee table:

Scheme 1. Dimensions of a coffee table.

  • pencil and ruler;
  • roulette;
  • screws;
  • a hammer;
  • screwdriver;
  • Chipboard, laminated boards 16 mm thick can be used;
  • hacksaw or jigsaw;
  • drill;
  • furniture pipe with a diameter of 30 mm;
  • pipe flanges;
  • insulating tape;
  • sandpaper;
  • flush;
  • overhead profile;
  • glue;
  • rubber wheels.

Patterns must be applied to the chipboard, circled with a pencil along the contour and scratched out with a nail so that the canvas does not split later. At the bottom of the tabletop pattern, the contour of the legs is cut out, which must be transferred to the details. Drawing the center line, mark 3 holes with a depth of 1.2 cm, and cut them out with a drill (8 mm). To control this procedure, it is recommended to use electrical tape. On the outside of the canvas, it is also necessary to mark the locations of the holes that will be required to support the shelves. To do this, measure 8 mm from the plane of the parts and the same distance from the beginning of the bend. The figure will show clearly how to do this.

The ends are finished with a U-shaped profile, the texture of which must correspond to the plate. To work with chipboard, it is recommended to use an overlay profile that can cover each part on both sides without fastening grooves. The profile also needs to be glued to the legs. After that, each end must be processed with sandpaper. The last parts are connected with a dowel to a shelf, on which a profile is then put on and cut off on the other side.

Table Assembly Instructions

Scheme 2. Assembling a coffee table.

A table top and a lower shelf are cut out of chipboard sheets, after which flanges are screwed to the first part. You should step back from the smaller side of 7 cm and draw a parallel line. In the same way, you need to do from 2 sides of the countertops and shelves. This will give you 4 intersection points to which you need to screw the flanges. After that, put the rubber wheels and insert the pipes into the prepared places, securing them with bolts. Diagram 2 shows in detail the purpose of each structural element.

To make the coffee table stable, you need to connect adjacent supports to each other using a pipe and a joker. To give an attractive appearance, a shelf is installed.

For such purposes, regular pipes are replaced with special parts, where appropriate fasteners are provided. After that, cut the glass to the desired size and insert it into the mount.

The final stage is the application of a finishing agent to the structure, but first it is necessary to remove the “old” coating with sandpaper and a wash. If the boards have been painted, the varnish or paint must be removed mechanically, thermally or chemically.

Table decoration and decoration

Ways to decorate countertops are very different. The simplest table decoration is considered to be wallpaper, a border or a printout of any image. The chosen method involves the selection of decor and fitting it to the size of the countertop.

The surface of the table is carefully varnished in 1 layer, and a decor is applied to the still wet tabletop. Each layer of varnish is recommended to dry for at least 24 hours, and the number of such layers depends on the desire of the master. However, the more layers of varnish are applied, the more effective the resulting picture will be.

Drawing on chipboard sheets can look quite original if you do not initially paint the countertop. For finishing, it is recommended to pre-clean the surface with sandpaper, while first large, and then fine, so that as a result the paint and primer have good adhesion. If the primer is used in the decoration, it is better to use artistic or acrylic, while the latter can also be painted. The finished drawing is varnished in 3 layers.

How to prepare do-it-yourself drawings with dimensions for a coffee table

Even those people who did not draw at school are faced with the need to work according to the drawings. For the manufacture of some models, a drawing may not be required, but for a coffee table made of wood with your own hands you cannot do without it.

To build their own drawing, they are armed with a large sheet of paper, a pencil, a ruler and a tape measure. The dimensions of the future product are measured with a tape measure, it must fit freely into the allotted place in the room.

All dimensions are fixed, and with the help of a ruler they are transferred to paper. All parts are cut according to the drawings. Do not forget to add the thickness of the legs and countertops to the drawing.

What materials can a coffee table be made from?

Let's decide what kind of model should be in the room. There are different options, and each has its own nuances.

In any case, it will not be superfluous to prepare a hacksaw, hammer, scissors, pliers, fasteners, carpentry or furniture glue, screws and nails.

Making your own coffee table from improvised materials

A favorite topic for many creative people is how to use improvised materials for practical use. Products from tires are especially popular - they are convenient to install in summer cottages and verandas, and from suitcases that have served their time as travelers.

Tire table

There are different ideas on how to use tires as a table. What pleases, such products are durable, original and take a minimum of time in the manufacture.

Here is a small instruction for creating a garden furniture set with a small table at the head.

IllustrationAction Description
Prepare 11 tires of the same diameter. We take two tires on the chair and connect them with ourselves using a screwdriver and self-tapping screws. For the table we take three tires.
We cut out 4 circles from plywood (pressed chips) with a size slightly larger than the inner diameter of the tire, and one large circle for the countertop.
The result is a cute garden set.

Table-suitcase

Do you have an old suitcase? How wonderful!

So, what is needed for such a rapid transformation? Four stable legs of any type - the main thing is that they are combined with the final decor option and easily withstand the product. Legs can be bought on Avito or torn off from old unnecessary furniture, made on a lathe. As a painting, you can take white enamel, as it is easy to decorate. But, in general, the color can be any, up to gilding. If the appearance of the suitcase is perfectly preserved, then you can not paint it. If you wish, you also need PVA glue, decoupage napkins, brushes, sandpaper, gold or silver acrylic.

First paint the base and let it dry. All irregularities are sanded, and a second layer of enamel is applied. Now we paint the legs and, as soon as they dry, glue them with furniture glue to the base. That's all the work! We turn the table and admire the result of labor.
