Homemade machete and scabbard for hunting and tourism. DIY machete - make a big knife from an old two-handed saw Making a machete

In many films, the machete is shown as a weapon that helps the main character defend himself from enemies or, on the contrary, attack them. In fact, this tool serves quite trivial agricultural needs. In Latin America, it is used to cut sugar cane or make their way through impenetrable thickets of the jungle. In our latitudes, the machete can be used as a tool for woodworking. You can make a machete with your own hands. This will require you to have certain skills and the availability of the appropriate tool. The materials for the manufacture of this knife are quite ordinary, you can find them without much effort.

materials

Before starting work, prepare:

  • a piece of thin hardened steel, maybe a little rusty;
  • paracord;
  • a piece of skin;
  • rivet for leather;
  • gypsy needle or awl;
  • waxed thread;
  • leather finishing wax;
  • sandpaper;
  • grinder;
  • knife sharpening tool;
  • propane burner;
  • a hammer;
  • container with water.

You can find a piece of hardened steel anywhere, you just need to look around carefully. In this case, a rectangular piece of steel found near the railroad tracks came up to create a machete.

Step 1. With chalk on a piece of steel, draw the shape characteristic of a machete. Don't forget to draw a pen.

Step 2. Cut out the blank for the machete with a grinder. Be sure to follow safety precautions. Do not wear loose clothing that can be drawn in and protect your eyes and hands while working. For convenience, when working with a grinder, clamp the piece of steel itself into a vise.

Don't forget to cut out the handle. Make it big, you will need it to form the handle of the machete.

Step 3. Sharpen your knife. To make it easier, you can give this workpiece to a blacksmith or do all the work yourself by heating the machete blade with a propane torch and immersing it in a container of cold water as needed.

Step 4. Wrap the paracord around the handle of the machete. Apply the coils of the cord tightly and tighten them with force. Be sure to secure the paracord so that it does not unwind during operation. Attach the ends of the paracord using a large needle.

Wrapping the handle of a machete is a must. So it will be more convenient for you to work: the steel will not cut into your hand, and the machete will not slip out of it.

Step 5. Cut out a machete case from a piece of leather. Repeat the shape of the blade, but don't forget to leave a few inches for the seams and fit. Try on the resulting pattern. If everything is in order, use an awl to make holes in the skin. Try to make the intervals between them equal. Sew the parts of the cover together using waxed thread or leather cord.

Sew a small strap to the case. Attach parts of one rivet to the case and strap. The strap will allow the machete to hold securely in the case, and if necessary, by unfastening the rivet, you can easily get the knife itself. Sew a small rectangular piece of leather on the back of the case. So, the finished product will be comfortable to wear on a belt.

Convenient large machete survival knives will come in handy on a long journey when overcoming impressive distances over difficult terrain, and will also become indispensable helpers in the household. In fact, it is not at all necessary to purchase such a relatively expensive tool. With a strong desire, the presence of imagination, certain practical skills, the necessary tools and materials, you can make a machete (knife) with your own hands.

materials

Before starting work, you need to prepare the following materials:

  • a blank in the form of a piece of hardened steel (it can be old and slightly rusted);
  • waxed thread;
  • piece of tough leather.
  • leather finishing wax;
  • wood blank;
  • epoxy resin;
  • metal rivets;

Instruments

To make a machete at home, you will need the following set of tools:

  • grindstone or grinding wheel;
  • Bulgarian;
  • sandpaper;
  • gypsy needle or awl;
  • a hammer;
  • vise;
  • roulette;
  • container with water;
  • protective glasses.

Design

To choose the right design, just look at a few ready-made machetes, photos of knives in a tourist store. Initially, it is better to draw on paper a couple of the most suitable sketches, in order to then choose a single option, the parameters of which correspond to the possibilities of manufacturing the product using the available materials. As an example, you can pay attention to the kukri machete knives, the blade of which has an impressive width over the entire plane and noticeably narrows only in the handle area.

Creating a rough shape

The contours of the future blade must be transferred to the steel billet, and then proceed directly to cutting. To prevent sheet metal from jumping, it is worth fixing it with clamps. For this, it is best to use a reliable vise. We recommend that you use safety goggles when cutting.

Editing the workpiece

After making a rough workpiece, it is necessary to perform a preliminary dressing of the blade. It is convenient to use a grinding machine for this. The presence of this tool will allow you to smooth the edges and give the workpiece a final shape that matches the sketch. It is not necessary to prepare a machete handle at this stage, since such work is performed separately.

Handle making

Now that the machetes have been viewed (photos of the knives of the most suitable design), the draft blank has been prepared and it has been edited, it's time to start making a comfortable, reliable handle. For the handle, old trimmings of durable wood are suitable. Having adjusted the handle to the required width and length, it is necessary to divide it into two parts, which will subsequently cover the workpiece on both sides.

Using a sturdy metal drill of a suitable diameter, holes are made through the wood, the plates for the handle lining and the steel billet. Initially, you should make sure that the diameter of the drill matches the parameters of the metal rivets and wood dowels that will be used when connecting the blade to the wooden handle.

At the final stage, the handle lining plates and the workpiece are treated with epoxy resin. Next, the final assembly of the handle takes place: metal rivets and dowels are inserted into the holes, after which the entire structure is tightly clamped in a vice and left overnight.

An alternative option for making the handle can be to replace the wooden blank with a strong rope of small diameter. So that the handle, made in the form of a winding of a rope, does not unwind, it is enough to pre-soak the material in epoxy. Winding can be done by any available weaving method.

Handle processing

After holding the wooden handle to a state of complete drying and adhesion to the elements of the future machete, you can perform its curly processing. To do this, it is recommended to hold the handle tightly in your hand in order to feel the edges that cause discomfort.

In the absence of extra time, you can simply round off all the sharp corners. However, the most convenient to use will be a machete (knife), the handle of which contains special cuts for the fingers. Making cuts will allow clamping the product in a vice, followed by processing the handle with a rasp on wood. After receiving the final, expected design, it is desirable to clean the surface of the handle with sandpaper of various textures to achieve perfect smoothness.

Descents

Machete - a knife with a characteristic faceted blade surface. To achieve this, it is necessary to process the workpiece before the appearance of descents. To perform such work, it is enough to have a grinder and a grinding disc.

Clamping the blade of the future machete in a vise allows you to cope with the task. At the same time, the back surface should remain accessible for processing by a grinder. In order for the machete knife to acquire an attractive faceted texture, it is enough to separate the blade and the back surface with a clear, even contour. To do this, a grinder tilted at a slight angle is carried out several times along the workpiece blade so that the metal is removed at a distance of 1.5-2 cm from the blade.

Blade sharpening

Knives-cleavers, machetes are distinguished by the presence of a strong sharp blade. However, the nature of sharpening this tool depends entirely on the needs of the master. Getting the smoothest, sharpest cutting edge possible is bound to take extra time, as it's not easy to make a sharp machete. The knife is made of steel, and working with this material is not easy.

To facilitate the task allows the delivery of a home-made tool for processing by a professional blacksmith. However, sometimes it turns out to be easier and faster to deal with the matter on your own than to resort to outside help.

If a sharpening that is not inferior to sharpening kitchen knives is considered a good result, then you can process the blade on the same grinder. To make the tip more pliable, it can be heated with a propane torch. At the same time, in order to avoid overheating, it is advisable to periodically immerse the machete blank in cold water.

A knife, or rather its blades, are processed with the most affordable sharpening tools that can be purchased at any hardware store.

It is better to make the blade moderately sharp and use the tool only for everyday tasks. Having made a combat knife with a machete, it is not recommended to carry it with you or carry it in a car, since the tool can be regarded by law enforcement agencies as an illegal edged weapon.

Case

At the end of the work, you should take care of making a comfortable cover, the presence of which will contribute to the safe operation of the product. Cut out a case in which the machete will fit - the knife is large enough and sharp, you can use a piece of thick leather.

When marking the material under the cover, you must try to repeat the shape of the blade as accurately as possible, not forgetting to leave a few centimeters for the allowances that are required to create the seams. Having made a Taiga machete knife, which implies the presence of several functional notches on the back of the blade, these features should be taken into account when cutting out the cover.

The resulting pattern is tried on to the shape of the blade. If everything is in order, in this case, you can start creating holes in the skin along the edges of the pattern. It is convenient to use a strong awl for this. It is necessary to try to leave equal intervals between the holes. You can connect the individual parts of the cover to each other by sewing the edges with a leather cord or waxed thread.

For ease of use of the cover, it is recommended to sew a small strap to it. To fix this element will allow metal rivets. The presence of a strap allows the machete to be held securely in the case. If necessary, the product can be quickly removed from the case by unfastening the rivet.

Quality checking

Having made a machete with your own hands, it is worth checking it out in practice. If the blade is thick enough, you can test its sharpness when chopping small wood. If necessary, it is worth re-sharpening the blade, adjusting the shape of the handle.

By resorting to the above method and exactly following the sequence of actions, you can make almost any knives, axes, machetes with your own hands. The main thing is to show imagination and not be afraid to learn, using the trial and error method.

The weekend is over, the program has been completed to the maximum:
1 A garden of 20 acres dug up, potatoes planted;
2 on the grave of grandfathers (participants of the Second World War) removed;
3rd annual, family trip to the forest to the lake from the melt water "Arka kul" - completed;
4th annual restoration of antique products and the invention of something new - is being fulfilled.
This year the question is “what to do?” didn't even come up. The old grandfather's item immediately caught my eye - it was something designed for cutting beets, etc., even my hardened father could not say the exact name, "it's just Kuin For Cutting" he said. I decided to call it HDR.
As you can see in the figure, the HDR consists of a body (connected to each other by a bolt-nut system, bars) and a cutter (once it was well ground). The cutter gave me the idea to make a machete.

The way the HDR works is simple: you lift the cutter by the handle, insert the beets between the body and the cutter, and slash along it.
Dismantled HDR in parts.

Cutter width 36 mm, length 470 mm, thickness 2 mm. In principle, the characteristic is sufficient for a knife.

I decided to cut off the section with a machine at an angle, the tip and a place for the handle.

It turned out here is such a preparation.

More like a big knife than a machete.

Workpiece dimensions: blade length 350 mm.
The rest of the metal will be used to make an awl, etc.

After all the preparatory work, he asked his father to sharpen the workpiece on a special machine.

Rate it!
The next step will be polishing the metal, but there are problems with rust in places deeper than expected (on the ribs). Then hardening of the metal with the lowering of the cutting edge in the used engine oil. (There is a need?)
Now another problem arose, and a very important one, how to make the handle. There are a lot of ways, but I did not find a suitable one for this knife. I thought to take a wooden block 5x5 cm as a basis.

Roughly speaking, cut in half, drill holes and connect with rivets. But something in this design confuses me and whether it will be necessary to install a guard.
I would be grateful if you could give me some advice or an idea.
Thank you for your attention! I hope you liked the preparation.
The second part of the article will be prepared after the completion of all work.

We begin to wind the cord, coil to coil, you can first moisten the cord itself, and when it dries, it will sort of shrink.

When the cord has already been wound, we thread it into the loop, and make one turn.

It is not difficult to make a machete with your own hands, having an old saw, a grinder and a grinding disc at hand. We offer a small workshop on how to make a large knife from an obsolete two-handed saw. With a large cutting surface and cutting power, the machete is indispensable for blazing a path through thickets, as well as for preparing camping food and protection from wild animals.

You can make a machete with your own hands if an old two-handed saw is lying around on the farm. Here, a flexible and durable canvas of a tool that has become unusable is valuable.

It's no secret that a machete is just a long and wide knife. Its original use is in the harvesting of sugar cane and bananas on tropical islands and in the states of Latin America.

Subsequently, the agricultural tool turned into a serious type of military weapon, which was repeatedly used in local conflicts. Many will also remember adventure films and action films where machetes are shown. Actually, thanks to the films, this kind of large knife has become famous.

As a peaceful item, the machete is effective for clearing a path through thick brush and tall grass. Due to the large length, it can be used for protection from wild animals and for cutting hunting prey.

If you don’t have an ordinary knife or a can opener at hand, a machete made by yourself can also come in handy in culinary business. They can open a jar canned meat, cut vegetables and herbs to cook delicious hot food on the campfire recipe with stew .

DIY machete technology

To make a large knife, you will need an old saw blade, a long (up to 2.5-3 meters) rope or paracord.

Of the tools you will need a grinder and, preferably, a grinding disc, as well as sandpaper.

You will also need a pencil and a ruler, but the latter is more likely to draw straight lines, because, ideally, a machete made by yourself should correspond to your individual physiological parameters.

So, the length of the cutting blade will be equal to the distance from the elbow of the arm to the joints of the compressed hand. The part rounded off at the end is 10 centimeters from the tip to the beginning of the rounding. Moreover, rounding can be done both from the bottom side, and from above and below (like the bow of a ship, if you stand on the deck).

The length of the handle is the width of the folded eight fingers. The thickness of the handle is two fingers. By the way, at the end of the handle, be sure to leave a couple of centimeters of the protrusion down. This is necessary so that the rope from which the handle winding will be made does not jump off.

Having taken measurements according to your personal parameters, having drawn even contours on the saw blade with a pencil and a ruler, you can start cutting the grinder of the desired shape.

Be sure to trim so that there are no nicks. Then clean the rust off the surface with a sanding disc.

Using a disc at a 25 degree angle, sharpen the point on both sides of the cutting surface. At the same time, leave a blunt indent of a couple of centimeters from the side of the handle. Finally, sand the surface with sandpaper.

It remains only to tightly wrap the handle with a rope so that it is comfortable in the palm of your hand. Here the ledge made is useful, on which you can fix the edge of the winding. Alternatively, the handle can be made of wood or plastic.

A large knife made with your own hands will surely serve you in the forest and thickets of tall grass or reeds. And, of course, this formidable weapon should only be used for peaceful purposes!
