Clear wax for candles. DIY candles - instructions for creating a stylish design (105 photo ideas)

Modern production of candles is not only the production of necessary household items. This is a real art, striking with a flight of thought and unlimited imagination. Modern candles are real decorative and interior elements that can easily replace works of art. Today candle making has become a favorite hobby among many people. The thing is that candles are made easily, do not require a lot of expensive material, but the field for imagination is unlimited.

What you need to make a candle with your own hands

To make a candle, we need paraffin wax. It can be bought at specialized craft stores, as well as at hardware stores. Paraffin can be taken from old, unburned or broken candles. Instead of paraffin, you can take beeswax. It is a natural material that purifies and disinfects the air when burned. However, it is not amenable to coloring and flavoring. Recently, soy wax has been gaining popularity. It dries quickly, burns for a long time and is easy to clean.

Pay attention to where you will be working. Prepare your workspace and cover it with old oilcloth or newspaper. We will need a saucepan for a water bath, an old bowl, a wick and a thermometer. As a wick, you can use a thin rope or a paper bundle. You can decorate the candle with decorative elements - Christmas tree branches, shells and beautiful stones. Do not forget about dyes - it is better to use oil-based dyes, food ones will not work. By adding aromatic oils at a certain stage, you give the candles a special charm - when burning, a pleasant smell will come from them.

How to make a candle

  1. Fill a pot with water and put on fire. It will be needed for a water bath. It is impossible to heat wax on an open fire - it burns and evaporates.
  2. Grind the paraffin into shavings and place in an old aluminum bowl. Keep in mind that paraffin is practically not washed off, so it is advisable to have a separate vessel for making candles.
  3. Paraffin needs to be planed, you should not put the wax in a single piece - it will melt for a very long time. Place a small container in a pot of boiling water and wait for the wax to melt.
  4. Have warm, soapy water and a damp cloth handy just in case. If wax gets on a table or stove, it will need to be wiped down immediately.
  5. Use a thermometer when heating wax. Craft shops sell a special thermometer for making decorative candles. If you have not found such a thermometer, you can use the usual confectionery analogue.
  6. Wax usually melts at a temperature of 85-90 degrees. It is very important to monitor the temperature so as not to overheat the wax. If you let it get hotter than it should, it can start to boil and then just ignite.
  7. Wax melting is a fire hazardous process. Carefully monitor the melting of paraffin and do not trust the process to children without adult supervision. If the wax catches fire, it cannot be extinguished with water, use a rag to do this.
  8. If you are burning wax from old used candles, you need to pay attention to whether there are old wicks in the mass. Remove them with tongs if necessary.
  9. When the wax becomes liquid, flavoring and dye must be added to it. You can add several colors and do not mix much to get a candle with multi-color streaks.
  10. Prepare the candle mold. Usually the form is a glass cup with transparent or patterned walls. It is necessary to fix the wick in it so that it is in a straight state strictly in the center. To do this, one end of the wick must be fixed on a round tin plane the size of a penny. The second end of the wick is tied to a stick, which holds it in a vertical position.
  11. If you want to dilute the candle with decor, it's time to fill the mold with them. It is best to place them as close as possible to the walls of the form, so that after the wax hardens they can be seen.
  12. The wax mass is carefully poured into the candle mold. In this case, you need to ensure that the wick does not move.
  13. Wax and paraffin harden depending on the density of the raw material. Usually homemade candles harden for 10-12 hours. But it is best to withstand the day, the longer the candle hardens, the better it will burn. There is no need to put a candle in the refrigerator.

After hardening, the candle can be used. Before doing this, do not forget to trim the wick, leaving a small tail for burning. The candle can be pulled out of the mold or left to be used directly in it. Homemade candles can be a nice and original gift.

It is interesting! If you add scented citronella oil to the wax when making a candle, the candle will repel mosquitoes when burned. It is a safe, simple and effective method of protection against annoying insects.

Gel candles are gaining popularity due to their lightness and original design. Decorating gel candles is a pleasure, because the transparent structure allows all decoration elements to be visible. Consider how to make a gel candle.

  1. In the craft and needlework store, you need to buy a special gel for making candles. It can be transparent or colored. You can mix several colors to get the desired shade.
  2. We heat the gel in the same way as paraffin. The gel becomes liquid at 100 degrees.
  3. We lower the wick into the prepared form in the same way as in the previous description. Lower the decorative elements to the bottom - buttons, pieces of dried citrus fruits, toys, beads - anything. Please note that the elements for decoration must be non-flammable.
  4. Pre-wash the decorative elements and dry them dry. Some decorations can be placed on the bottom, while others can be added to the candle as the melted gel is poured. They will remain as if floating in space.
  5. Arrange the decor elements so that they are not located close to the wick. Maintain a distance of at least one centimeter from the wick.
  6. Sometimes after the candle solidifies, bubbles form inside the gel. To avoid this, the mold must be heated. This can be done by dipping it in hot water or using a hair dryer. If you lowered the form into water, do not forget to dry it thoroughly after that. If, on the contrary, you want to decorate the candle with a lot of bubbles and focus on this, you need to cool the mold first in the freezer.

After hardening, the gel candle can not be used earlier than a day later.

  1. As an interesting idea, you can use a gel of several colorful shades. To do this, pour some gel on the bottom of the mold and wait a few minutes for it to set. After that, pour the gel of a different shade into the container. So you can combine colors and make a bright striped candle. If you want the colors to have a smooth transition, you do not need to wait long for the solidification. In this case, they will blend at the border of the color. If you want to get clear boundaries, it's worth waiting a little longer. However, do not overdo the composition, otherwise, after complete solidification, a whitish film may form on the surface - it will spoil the appearance of the candle.
  2. You can make a natural candle from lemon peel. To do this, cut the lemon in half, carefully cut out the pulp. Add cloves, lavender essential oil and a sprig of rosemary while melting into the gel. The melted gel must be poured into the mold and allowed to cool. It will turn out a beautiful and fragrant fruit candle.
  3. In order for a pleasant aroma to come from the finished candle when burning, you need to add coffee beans to the melted wax. After you pour the wax into the mold, decorate the top of the candle with an original pattern of grains.
  4. You can make a candle with your own photos. To do this, print the photo on tracing paper and cut out the image. After that, attach the picture to the candle and heat it with a hair dryer. After a while, the drawing will begin to be transferred to the candle. So you can make candles with any pattern or picture.

Exquisite decorative candles can change the atmosphere in the house. Handmade candles make the interior warm and cozy.

Wax and paraffin candles

To make a neat wax candle with your own hands, you need to correctly carry out the process of melting the base. The same remark can be attributed to candles made of paraffin. The base material melts at high temperatures. You need to adapt well and act quickly, because the melted wax and paraffin cool quickly and do not pour well. Due to the high melting temperatures, safety rules must be observed when working with these bases.

Step by step instructions for making candles.

Habitual beeswax is little used to make decorative candles. As noted above, scented and beautifully colored products cannot be made from such wax.

Instead of beeswax, do-it-yourself decorative candles are made from soy gel at home. This is the most popular base material. It is environmentally friendly and slow burning.

The first stage in the production of candles is preparatory. All necessary ingredients, tools and fixtures are purchased and prepared. A professional master class on the topic, with photos and a description, or a video is selected on the Internet.

Before melting, a warm soapy solution is poured into the prepared container. It may be needed to collect wax in case of splashing or spilling of the molten mass. Nearby have cardboard and a towel or cloth napkin.

It is absolutely impossible to melt wax directly. This process must be done slowly so that the wax does not burn out and evaporate. Therefore, the melting of the base is carried out in a water bath.

A water bath is built from 2 pans. Half fill a larger container with water. Another pan is inserted into it, preferably with handles. It is needed to melt the wax.

The second stage is the manufacture of the wick. To do this, take a cotton thread. The wick of colored floss threads looks original.

The type of wick depends on the base material. For wax candles, it is made from thick, slightly intertwined threads. For paraffin and gel products, the threads are tightly twisted so that the candle does not smoke when burning. From a thick wick, a candle will burn and smoke very quickly, and from a thin one, it will burn badly and go out.

In addition to simple twisting, the threads can be braided or crocheted. Before pouring the candle, the wick is impregnated with wax or paraffin.

The third stage is the choice of form. How to make a candle at home without special forms? It all depends on the imagination of the craftswoman. Candle shape can be any container and packaging that can withstand the high temperatures of molten wax. Since the wax coating is poorly removed from the dishes, it is better to choose unnecessary consumable containers as forms.

The fourth stage is the melting of the base material. The melting temperature of wax candles depends on its type:

  • paraffin wax has a melting point of +50…+60°С;
  • bee - +62 ... + 79 ° С;
  • soy gel can be melted at temperatures not exceeding +80°C.

There are many master classes on the Internet on how to melt wax correctly. The melting temperature can be monitored with a candy thermometer or a meat thermometer.

Wax or paraffin is crumbled into small pieces, as large pieces melt for a long time. The grated mass is placed in the upper saucepan of a water bath. When the water in the lower saucepan boils, reduce the heat slightly to maintain an even melting point.

Flavoring is added to the melted wax if scented candles are made. The mixture mixes well. Then add the dye and mix again.

The fifth stage is the casting of wax or the actual creation of a candle. The wick is fixed in the center of the form. Its tip must be fixed on a wooden stick. It is laid on top of the mold so that the thread is exactly in the middle of the mold. A knot is tied at the free end of the wick. The length of the thread should be such that it rests on the bottom of the container.

The wax is then poured into the mold and allowed to cool. If the candle mold has a hole in the bottom, then the wax is poured in several passes. Pour the molten base carefully so as not to burn yourself and not move the wick to the side.

The mold is left to cool. The product must be refrigerated for at least 24 hours. Some people try to speed up the cooling process by placing the mold in the freezer. It is better not to do this, as such candles do not burn well. During natural cooling, the material is evenly compacted and maintains high-quality and long-term combustion.

Gel candles

To make a gel candle with your own hands, you need to have the following materials:

  • gel wax;
  • reinforced wick;
  • essential oils;
  • liquid dyes;
  • decor elements.

Soy gel is a natural, absolutely non-toxic substance. It is used to make decorative and aromatherapy candles. The substance retains essential oils well and releases them better when burned. The smell will be richer and brighter.

The addition of essential oils to wax lowers its melting point. Impregnation of the wick with soy gel allows you to get an even and clean burning. During combustion, soot and carcinogens are not released, which cannot be said about paraffins, and even more so about stearins.

Making gel wax at home

It is not difficult to establish the production of candles from soy gel, since they can be made at home. You can read about how to make soy gel yourself on the forums of craftswomen on hand made. Standard Recipe:

  • gelatin - 5 g or 1 tsp;
  • tannin - 2 g or on the tip of a knife;
  • water - 20 ml or 4 tsp;
  • glycerin - 35 ml or 1 tbsp. l. and 2 tsp.

Tannin is dissolved in glycerin by heating. Continuing to heat the mixture, gelatin is added to it. The resulting solution should be clear. The prescription amount of water is added to it. While stirring, the mixture is brought to a boil. When adding water, the solution may become cloudy, but with further boiling it will clear. The mixture is boiled until the water has completely evaporated.

The finished gel is poured into a pre-prepared refractory mold with a wick fixed in it. The gel, made by hand, is not inferior in quality to the one bought in the store.

Making scented candles

If you have the skills to make wax candles at home, then it will not be difficult to solve the problem of how to make an aromatic candle. Homemade scented candles have many advantages over store-bought ones. The main advantage is that they are environmentally friendly, the components used for their production are harmless.

Any natural essential oils can be used to flavor wax products. But it should be borne in mind that when burning, some of them can change their smell. Before adding aromatic substances, they should be heated in order to understand what the smell of a burning candle will be like. Waxes can be flavored with exotic spices, tea mix, coffee beans.

Candle decoration

You can decorate homemade candles in many ways. The very first is the shape of the products, it can be unusual and unexpected. Various stickers are used. An interesting way of finishing is decoupage with napkins.

A decorative pattern can be made using dried flowers, grass, fruits, citrus fruits, coffee beans, pebbles, shells, petals and other elements. In the decoration of decorative products, everything that fantasy tells the craftswomen is used.

Jewelry should be fixed in the mold before pouring the melted base. Pour the hot mass carefully so as not to shift the pattern.

Remove the wicks from the remains of the candles, put all the pieces of paraffin in a metal container and place in a water bath.

If you are using white paraffin but want to make a colored candle, crumble baby wax crayons into a container. To make the candle with a pearly sheen, add eye shadow to the source material. By adding a few drops of essential oil to melted paraffin, you can make an aromatic candle.

While the paraffin is melting, prepare the mold for pouring. Lubricate its walls with sunflower oil to make it easier to remove the frozen candle.

Make a wick. To do this, tightly twist a few floss threads. The thicker the candle, the more threads are needed for the wick. Soak the wick with melted paraffin. Tie one end of the wick to a pencil and place it on top of the mold. The end of the wick should touch the bottom of the mold. You can additionally fix the wick from below. To do this, pierce a hole in the center of the bottom of the mold, pull the end of the wick through it and secure by tying a knot on the outside.

Pour about two-thirds of the melted paraffin into the mold and leave overnight. In the morning, when the paraffin hardens, a depression forms in the middle of the candle. Melt the rest of the paraffin in a water bath and fill this “crater” with it.

Then leave the candle for another day. When the paraffin has completely hardened, remove the candle from the mold. If sunflower oil did not help and the paraffin still stuck to the walls of the form, put it in the freezer for 10 minutes or hold it in hot water.

DIY coffee candle

To make a coffee candle, you will need 5 white paraffin candles or a few candle ends, 4-5 tbsp. l. coffee beans, beer can, juice box or other shape, pencil, knife, sunflower oil, floss, small saucepan or bowl.

First, grind the candles with a knife, remove the wicks from them.

Melt the pieces of paraffin in a water bath.

While the paraffin is melting, prepare the mold and wick in the same way as described above.

When the paraffin melts, without removing the saucepan from the water bath, add coffee beans there, and after 10 minutes remove them and put them on the bottom of the mold, filling it almost halfway.

Pour a small amount of paraffin into the coffee beans so that they do not float, and cool slightly.

When this layer of paraffin has set, melt the rest of the paraffin and fill the mold to the top. When the candle hardens, take it out of the mold.

Hold the layer of grains over the fire for a few seconds so that the paraffin melts slightly and the grains become more noticeable.

DIY fruit candle

To make a fruit candle, you will need a lemon, orange, grapefruit or any other citrus fruit with a dense peel, several white or yellow candles, floss thread, a small saucepan or bowl, and a pencil.

Cut the fruit in half and carefully remove the pulp, being careful not to damage the peel. The peel halves will serve as candle holders. Twist a few strands of floss with a bundle and soak them in paraffin or remove the wick from the candle. Tie one end of the wick to a pencil and place it on top of the peel half. Make a hole in the bottom of the peel, pull the lower end of the wick through it and tie it with a knot from the outside.

Grind the candles with a knife, remove the wicks from them, and melt the pieces of paraffin in a water bath. Pour melted paraffin halves of the peel and leave to harden.

Pictures for candles

Even the simplest candle can be turned into a festive one in 5 minutes. To do this, you will need a thick candle, patterned paper napkins, scissors and a teaspoon or tablespoon.

Carefully cut out a picture from the napkin that you would like to decorate the candle with. Please note that such napkins are usually multi-layered, but you only need one, the top layer with a pattern. You can cut out one pattern or several by gluing them around the entire circumference of the candle.

Lightly heat a spoon over an open flame.

Attach the pattern to the candle and gently smooth it with a warm spoon, moving from the center to the edges of the picture.

And if you choose a picture of Santa Claus as a plot, then you get such a beautiful New Year's candle, which will decorate the New Year's interior and be good New Year's gift .

DIY gel candle

Transparent gel candles look very unusual. In addition to external beauty, they have another advantage: the gel burns more slowly than paraffin. In general, the principle of making a gel candle is the same as that of a paraffin candle. However, there are also a number of features.

To make a gel candle, mix 5 parts of colorless gelatin with 20 parts of water. After 30-40 minutes, add 25 parts of glycerin to the swollen gelatin. Put the mixture on low heat and heat until a clear solution is obtained. Separately, take 10 parts of glycerin, heat it up and dissolve 2 parts of tannin in it. Mix both solutions. You will end up with a cloudy solution. Keep it warm for a while until it becomes transparent. Please note that the gel must not be heated to temperatures above 120 ° C, as in this case the oil part will begin to decompose, the gel will turn cloudy and smell unpleasant. Try to stir the gel as little as possible, otherwise bubbles will form in it. If bubbles still appear, place the candle on a windowsill well lit by the sun. The gel will warm up and the bubbles will disappear.

Pour the finished gel into a glass mold with a wick.

As a form, you can use any beautiful glass vessel with not too thin walls. Wash it thoroughly, dry it and heat it in the oven. This is done to reduce the temperature difference between the gel and the vessel walls. If this difference is too large, bubbles will form near the mold walls. In addition, glass can break from temperature changes.

The wick is made and attached in the same way as for paraffin candles. Of course, it is impossible to pierce a glass vessel, so the lower end of the wick is glued to the bottom with glue.

The gel is poured along the walls of the mold. In no case do not pour it with a jet.

You can make an original candle by putting non-combustible materials in the lower part of the mold: pebbles, shells, beads. Jewelry is poured into an empty form without a wick, filled with gel and left. When the gel hardens, a hole is pierced with a knitting needle and the lower part of the wick is inserted there. The top one is attached to the pencil as usual. Then the form is filled with the remaining gel to the brim.
