It is in order for the firewood to remain dry that they think over a storage system. Of course, all firewood can be transferred to any nearby building, but in this case, this will reduce the aesthetics. But the firewood rack will solve the issue of both storage and comfort during the operation of the stove.

What should be a woodcutter for a fireplace or stove?

A firewood stand can be made from any material, but most often it is made from wood or metal. As for improvised means, concrete rings, fittings, barrels, in general, everything that can be found in your suburban area, may come up.

  • For premises;
  • portable;
  • For the street;
  • Stationary.

You should start by creating a stand.

This will require the following materials and tools:

  • Plywood;
  • Marker;
  • Drill;
  • Jigsaw;
  • Several wooden slats;

These are the materials that are most needed. After all the materials are collected, you can start building.

They are as follows:

  1. A small ellipse of about 90 by 40 cm is drawn on a sheet of plywood;
  2. A shape is cut out along the contour with a jigsaw;
  3. Step back from the edge of 5 centimeters and drill holes with a drill, the approximate diameter of which is 3 cm.
  4. Plywood is placed in water for 1 hour so that it becomes elastic;
  5. After that, it is given a bent shape.
  6. Insert wooden handles into the holes made;
  7. Outside, these handles are fastened with a dowel;
  8. In order for the firewood rack not to stagger like a cradle, it needs to be given stability, this will be helped by several rails that are attached to the base with self-tapping screws.

As for the fifth point, it must be done very carefully, otherwise the material can be easily damaged. If you feel that the material is cracking or not giving in, lower it again into the water.

How to choose a wood stand by the fireplace

Before making a purchase decision, decide for what purpose you will purchase a firewood stand, because this is not just a box. If it is a simple and beautiful addition to the fireplace, then a stationary firewood rack will do. For those who plan to bring firewood from the street, mobile stands may be suitable. In addition, getting to the logs in order to throw them into the fire will be very simple. Of course, this method can add to the hassle of cleaning, because the installed woodpile provides for the remaining sawdust on the floor, which will need to be cleaned often.

street

One of the most popular and practical ways to store firewood is an outdoor firewood shed or firewood shed. It is a small shed. Definitely with a roof. The main function of such a firewood rack, first of all, is to ensure the safe storage of forest material. Outdoor firewood can be made of both wood and metal. It can be purchased to order or do it yourself. Most often, for the street, experts suggest opting for a firewood shed made of wood rather than metal, since metal options do not circulate firewood, so there is a risk that they will become damp and rot. A vertical firewood rack can also be an excellent option; it will look very good in a forged design. This type of woodpile in the summer can be not only a practical solution, but also a kind of decoration for your country yard or garden.

Home firewood is in good harmony next to the fireplace.

Stationary

Stationary options for firewood for the house and the street are made of metal. Street woodpile is most often made of wood. Forged models look very interesting, which are placed not only in the house, but also in the yard. They will be a great addition to the forged brazier and recreation area.

portable

Portable firewood models are a very convenient and practical solution, very often compact. Wicker can be used as a decorative and portable firewood rack for the home. Unfortunately, it has a number of disadvantages. Such a firewood rack is very short-lived, and also not so practical, therefore it is suitable for carrying only a small amount of firewood.

A portable metal firewood rack will not only be an excellent decor element in the house, but will also serve you for more than one year. Most often, such firewood sheds are covered with a special anti-corrosion coating, due to which they do not lose their aesthetic properties and are not destroyed.

Style decisions

This is a very nice bonus, and quite a profitable option, because such accessories for the fireplace are made in the same style and design. Very often, such firewood racks are portable, which is also a big plus. In addition, a fireplace or stove and a firewood rack, made in the same style, will look great in the interior, they will add a special zest to it.

As already mentioned, wicker options are not very durable. But they are made from natural materials, so they are popular from year to year. Outdoor woodpile is most often made of wood. Sometimes you can see wooden firewood in the interior of the house, which is also a very interesting solution. In addition, this embodiment is also environmentally friendly. For lovers of something unusual, some manufacturers produce leather firewood. They are portable, quite convenient and practical to use. If you want to make a firewood rack yourself, then it is best to make it from plywood.

When arranging a solid fuel heating system in a country house, it becomes necessary to purchase or build a firewood for a stove or fireplace. The fact is that it is impossible to leave stocks of firewood harvested for the heating period under the open sky - atmospheric precipitation will quickly destroy them.

To keep them dry and usable, you need to prepare a storage place for them. Of course, you can take the entire wood supply to a barn or other household building, but the suburban area will have a more aesthetic and attractive appearance if you build or buy a firewood shed for fuel. As a result, the problem of storing firewood will be solved.

Types of firewood for private houses and cottages

A woodpile for a fireplace or other heating unit can be made from a variety of materials, but in most cases metal or lumber is used. Also, some home craftsmen use barrels, concrete rings for building wells and other items available in the suburban area to create a woodcutter.

The choice of material and improvised items depends on the place where the device for storing logs is supposed to be placed - inside the building or on the street.

Firewood can be conditionally divided into 4 categories:

  • stationary;
  • portable;
  • for premises;
  • for the street.

Many homeowners use sheds to store firewood, but in buildings without constant circulation of air masses, the firewood quickly becomes damp and the wood begins to rot. Insects and rodents often start up in such a structure. The firewood shed looks more attractive and stylish.

Regardless of the choice of material of manufacture, it must solve a number of problems, including:

  • ensuring the circulation of air masses between the logs;
  • reliable protection of firewood from atmospheric precipitation;
  • providing convenient operation.

The outdoor firewood shed looks like an ordinary shed. But its walls should not be tightly closed for arranging high-quality ventilation. The floor of the building must be made raised above the ground so that the wood does not dampen. For the home, it is better to use designs that have elegant shapes.

You can build an openwork forged firewood for a fireplace - a stove that is small in size. An aesthetic function is usually assigned to it and only a few bookmarks of firewood are placed in it. Such a stand, depending on the desire, is made mobile or stationary. To make a forged firewood rack, hot or cold forging is used.

Also, the indoor product must match the interior of the room, be stable, safe and easy to use. At the same time, a forged woodcutter for a fireplace can have an original intricate design. If desired, it can be rearranged to any convenient place in the room.

The outdoor storage of logs should have a completely different appearance. When stocking up on firewood for the cold season, it is necessary to ensure that the fuel is preserved before the onset of spring.

When constructing such a structure, you must adhere to certain rules:

  1. Between the ground and the surface on which the firewood will lie, there should be at least 10-15 centimeters of distance. If this is not followed, the bottom layer of logs may become saturated with moisture.
  2. When it is planned to store a solid supply of fuel, it is desirable that the structure has several floors, which makes it easier to maintain order in the building, provide natural air circulation and thereby create an optimal level of humidity.
  3. It is necessary to build a canopy under a slight slope and then the precipitation will freely leave the roofing, condensate will not collect.
  4. When constructing a structure for a significant supply of solid fuel, care must be taken to equip a solid foundation. Otherwise, under the weight of firewood, the floor of the building may sink and then the moisture coming from the soil will certainly spoil the lower layers of wood. To strengthen the firewood, strong beams are screwed into the soil.

You can weld a small firewood rack using corner pieces and mount it tightly against the wall of your house. Thanks to this, it is not necessary to close the back wall of the structure. From above, such a building is covered with a roof that protects from precipitation.

A simple solution would be to build a frame with a roof made of wooden beams. But this option has a significant drawback, which is the absence of a back wall, as a result of which all firewood in rainy weather can be flooded with water.

Therefore, it is desirable to use a metal shield made of a profile to protect the structure. A good solution than to close such a firewood is polycarbonate. Through such a coating material, sunlight will begin to freely penetrate inside it, and the firewood will always be well dried.

A good idea for outdoor storage of logs are ordinary concrete rings. A similar version of the woodcutter looks original and very stylish on a suburban area. In order to build it, it is necessary to purchase prefabricated concrete rings, but they are heavy. In this case, it will not work to do the work on your own; assistants will be needed for the construction.

To mount this structure, first of all, you need to determine its location and prepare a reliable foundation by filling the soil with gravel and tamping. After that, the rings will not be able to budge. A multi-level design will look even more attractive.

A budget option for arranging a woodcutter is a structure made from ordinary barrels. To do this, take one barrel, lay it on its side and securely fix it with wooden slats. From several barrels, you can make a multi-level structure for storing firewood.

Do-it-yourself firewood for a fireplace

Today on sale there is a large selection of original and stylish firewood for the fireplace and stove. They are made from various materials. They can perfectly fit into any interior design and provide convenient operation. But some home craftsmen prefer to make such designs with their own hands.

Of course, without having certain skills and an appropriate set of tools, it is impossible to make a woodcutter with your own hands.

Option one. Indoor firewood stand

To create a firewood stand by the fireplace with your own hands, you can use plywood, in addition to which you will need the following materials and tools:

  • construction marker;
  • electric drill;
  • jigsaw;
  • plywood sheet;
  • wooden slats - 2 pieces.

Construction work consists of several stages:

  1. On a plywood sheet, using a marker, draw an ellipse measuring 90x40 centimeters.
  2. According to the applied outline, the base is cut out with an electric jigsaw.
  3. 5 centimeters recede from two edges and both holes with a diameter of about 3 centimeters are drilled with a drill.
  4. To give the base a spherical shape, it is necessary to achieve the elasticity of the material, which in this case is plywood. To do this, hot water is poured into a volumetric container, such as a bath, and the cut out base is placed in it, leaving it for about one hour.
  5. Having withstood the required time, the plywood is given the desired shape. This should be done slowly and as carefully as possible to prevent damage to it. If the material does not lend itself well, it can be additionally lowered into heated water for about half an hour.
  6. A wooden handle is inserted into the previously made holes, which is fixed on the outside with a dowel. So that the firewood rack, which in its appearance resembles a firewood basket for a fireplace or stove, does not swing on the floor like a cradle, it should be given a stable position with the help of two rails. They are attached to the base using self-tapping screws.

Such a plywood construction is distinguished by its simplicity of execution and ease of use. It is easy to move and put in the right place.

You can make a stand out of wood, for which any wood is suitable. The only requirement for such a firewood box by the fireplace is to maintain a distance from open flames.

Option two. Portable mini firewood basket

Usually firewood is stored for the entire cold period of the year. But, no matter how many logs are in the woodshed, from time to time you still have to go outside for the next portion of solid fuel. To make it convenient to move, every craftsman can easily make a firewood basket with his own hands.

It will also not be difficult to make a mini-firewood rack of a simple design. Even a beginner can build it, but it looks pretty stylish.

Prepare the following materials and tools:

  • metal rod with a diameter of 5 millimeters - 2 pieces;
  • metal rod 15 centimeters long - 4 pieces;
  • welding equipment.

The sequence of work when creating a firewood for a fireplace with your own hands is as follows:

  1. 2 blanks are made from metal rods. To do this, they need to be bent so that the diameter of each circle is 50 centimeters. Connect the ends of the rods by welding.
  2. Circles are set side by side and twisted with wire at the highest point. After the junction is fixed, two circles are bred from the bottom to the sides at a distance of 10–12 centimeters from each other. The resulting structure is fixed on the table with a clamp.
  3. Using welding, two points are fixed on top. In this place, then they make a handle for carrying a mini firewood.
  4. Next, the structure must be stiffened so that it can withstand the weight of the wood when carried. The future woodcutter is additionally tightened with metal rods in the amount of 4 pieces. Their size depends on the distance at which the two circles were separated. Weld the rods parallel to each other.
  5. When the frame is ready, it should be given stability relative to a horizontal surface. To do this, you can use 4 metal loops - they are welded to the base.
  6. To protect the firewood from corrosive processes and give it an attractive look, this original firewood stand by the fireplace needs to be painted.

Option three. Woodpile from old barrels

The firewood shed, which is made from a waste old empty barrel, can be used both outside and inside the building.

To create it you need:

  1. Bulgarian prepare a circle with a width of 15 to 20 centimeters.
  2. Take a sheet of metal and make a vertically standing partition - it must be fixed by welding.
  3. On the left side of the round structure, you can arrange an additional shelf on which it will be convenient to store brushwood for kindling the hearth or tools.
  4. Fix the base of the firewood rack on the floor, for which they take two metal or wooden slats.

Option four. Drovnik from wooden beams

One of the budget options for arranging a structure for firewood in a summer cottage is a wooden or metal building. But a firewood rack made of metal is not able to provide the required air ventilation for firewood, as a result of which there is a high probability of increased humidity and rotting of the wood.

For this reason, the best solution is this simple and inexpensive option for assembling a wooden frame, which will require:

  • wooden bars from lining;
  • roofing material (regular film);
  • wooden shield or pallet;
  • moisture protective impregnation for wood processing;
  • screws;
  • construction marker and level;
  • brushes;
  • hacksaw;
  • electric drill;
  • construction stapler.

After preparation, proceed to the main part of the construction:

  1. Draw a diagram of the firewood, taking into account the height of its walls and width. When calculating the dimensions, it is necessary to take into account such a value as the required amount of firewood as a reserve for the heating period. When making calculations, the following standards are used: to heat a room with an area of 100 "squares", you need to prepare at least 2 cubic meters of dry firewood. The quality of solid fuel is of great importance. For example, birch logs for the winter will need 15-20% less.
  2. After the location of the firewood shed on the site is chosen, they begin to create a sketch, which will reflect the dimensions of the walls and the angle of the roof - it should protrude 30 centimeters beyond the frame, otherwise the last row of firewood will get wet during rain. At the same time, one should not forget that fuel can lie in this place for more than one year without losing its properties.
  3. At the site of the structure, it is necessary to make markings using pegs and a rope. Experts advise choosing a site without a slope, since the firewood shed, being under a large weight of firewood, can tilt.
  4. For the construction make the foundation. To this end, with the help of an earthen drill or a shovel, 4 holes are dug about 60 centimeters deep at the location of the pegs. Wooden blocks are lowered into the ground by about 20 centimeters, but the underground part of them is covered with resin that resists moisture for 15 to 20 years. From above, the base is wrapped with roofing material. Then the pits are tightly covered with gravel or clay and rammed with a metal pole. Experts advise sand, clay and gravel to alternate in layers of 10 centimeters. A layer of film is laid on the ground so that moisture does not penetrate. The base is laid of brick and cement mortar. Instead of masonry, you can use a wooden shield, which is impregnated with a hydrophobic composition.
  5. Since the slope of the roof should provide a runoff of atmospheric precipitation, wooden poles are made of different heights with a minimum difference of 13–15 centimeters.
  6. To stiffen the structure, the first row of poles should be connected to the back. They take two bars and, using an electric drill and screws, they are securely fixed into a structure that is sheathed with shields or wooden beams.
  7. It is desirable to make the walls of the woodcutter from croaker - this is the most economical option. Small gaps are left between the elements, providing natural air circulation.
  8. A roof for a woodcutter can also be made from a slab, but first a base is created for it. From above, the structure is covered with roofing felt or film using a construction stapler. To cover the roof, polycarbonate or slate is purchased.
  9. At the end, the building is varnished or painted.

The arrangement of a compact storage place for solid fuel in a suburban area allows you to streamline your firewood stocks for several years.

Wooden firewood rack of stationary type - excellent protection of logs from any bad weather

In fact, a do-it-yourself firewood rack can be built from a variety of materials that are almost always available in the household. In this regard, there are a large number of ways to build such structures.

Material selection

Material for home firewood can be:

  • wooden beams,
  • steel pipes,
  • thick steel wire
  • wooden euro pallets.

Advice! A temporary place for storing firewood can be an ordinary euro pallet, on which logs are stacked. From above, they are covered with a plastic film, which must be securely fastened at the corners, excluding the penetration of moisture inside. To fix the corners of the film, pegs hammered into the ground or simply bricks laid on top of them can be used.

Design features

Compact portable design - ideal for a fireplace

First of all, you need to decide on the type of structure. There are two main options:

  • A portable firewood rack, which is more suitable for a fireplace. It has a small size and is installed not far from the hearth.
  • Stationary street, used for baths or home heating in the cold season. This is already a covered area, protected from precipitation on all sides.

There are more requirements for the second option, since such a firewood rack must reliably protect the logs from dampness and precipitation. Therefore, such a design must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Firewood must be isolated from the ground, otherwise it will be saturated with moisture. Therefore, the firewood rack should be installed on a flooring raised above ground level by at least 10 cm.
  • The walls should be solid enough to protect the logs from rain and snow blown by side winds.

Advice! In this case, the walls must have sufficient ventilation in order to ensure good drying of the wood.

  • For effective drainage of precipitation, the roof must have a sufficient slope.

A firewood rack that meets these requirements can be made from:

  • Bars, with a section of 20 by 30 mm with sheathing with boards or clapboard.
  • Euro pallets lined with clapboard.
  • Metal profiles sheathed with polycarbonate sheets.

Features of the construction of a stationary firewood

Regardless of what material the log storage room will be built from, its arrangement should include the following steps:

  • First, a plan is created when the intended design is applied to paper at a certain scale. This will allow you not to make mistakes in further construction.

  • Regarding the sketch, the future structure is marked in place. Locations for the installation of frame supports are determined.
  • Since the flooring must withstand the load of a large amount of firewood, it is necessary to equip a small foundation. Most often, the base for the woodshed is made of wooden beams or metal poles. The first option involves digging supports to a depth of about a meter.

Important! In order to extend the life of a wooden firewood rack, it is necessary to first cover the underground part of the beams with bitumen or resin. This will allow the building to stand on your site for at least 20 years.

If steel pipes are used, then the best option would be to concret them in the ground. To do this, dig a hole, about 70 cm deep, into which a pipe is inserted and fixed in the hole by means of brick fragments. Next, the pit is to be filled with liquid concrete.

  • If a wooden structure can be erected in one stage, then with a metal variant, after installing the foundation, it is necessary to wait a certain time for its final hardening.
  • After installing the pillars, they are attached to them with self-tapping screws (in the case of wooden beams) or intermediate logs are welded (when using metal profiles).

Earlier we wrote and advised to bookmark the article.

  • Lags are installed for laying the roof. Please note that they have a slope of at least 10 degrees.
  • After that, the finished frame is sheathed with clapboard, board or polycarbonate sheets. Any available material can be used as a sheathing, including slate sheets or corrugated board.
  • At the last stage, roof sheathing is carried out using any roofing material.

Advice! Some firewood sheds are equipped with doors. If we are talking about a small structure, then here you can get by with a narrow hole in the wall.

Making a portable firewood

Since dirt and debris are inevitably brought into the house with firewood, it will not be very convenient to store them directly on the floor. Therefore, in addition to stationary, firewood for a fireplace is widespread, which are installed inside the house near the hearth. These are compact designs, which are often a stylish addition to the interior, so most often such a firewood container is made of metal.

Video: do-it-yourself portable firewood

The forged firewood rack deserves special attention, the figured elements of which look especially elegant. Such a product can be made by you yourself, and from improvised means.

One of the most interesting options is a firewood rack made of thick (about 1 cm in cross section) wire. The manufacturing principle is extremely simple:

  • From the wire, two rings should be bent, with a diameter of about 80 cm.
  • The ends of each of the rings should be fixed together by welding.
  • Further, at the top point, the rings are welded together so that from below they are separated to the sides by 20-30 cm according to the basket principle.

Advice! The bottom distance between the rings should be slightly less than the length of the smallest logs.

  • Several jumpers are welded between the rings so that the structure acquires the necessary rigidity.

A metal fireplace wood rack can be made in another way. In this case, it is a narrow rectangular rack. The product is made as follows:

  • From metal profiles, two bases of a firewood rack are welded, 40 by 40 cm in size.
  • The bases are interconnected by four profiles, 100-120 cm long. Thus, we get an elongated shelf, which is installed vertically.
  • A board of the appropriate size can be used as a stand for the bottom base.

Conclusion

The firewood rack is a very important design for owners of private houses. It should be built in the event that you do not want to spend extra time igniting damp logs, because only with proper storage they will give off a sufficient amount of heat during combustion.
