The use of penofol (isolon) as a heater is a very lightweight option that can be used by residents of warm regions. For Yamalo-Nenets or the Republic of Sakha, floor insulation with Izolon is absolutely not suitable. Izolon (Penofol) is not capable of resisting freezing in forty-degree frosts without arranging electric heating.

Warm floors in a house or apartment are a guarantee of comfort and, most importantly, the health of all family members. The construction market offers a variety of materials for insulation. One of the most common ways today is to insulate the floor with penofol.

Penofol classification

The material is polyethylene foam. It is produced in rolls with a thickness of 0.3 to 1 cm. The foil is welded in the same layer, regardless of the thickness of the material itself. Penofol type "A" has a foil coating on one side only, type "B" on both sides. Type "C" has a self-adhesive layer, it can be easily attached to any surface. Finally, the "ALP" type has a laminated polyethylene layer.


Self-adhesive material does not require additional fixation. In other cases, it is fixed with a construction stapler, wide-head nails or special glue.

The first step is to align with an additional screed. You can lay penofol on a concrete floor without a screed, if it is initially fairly even. Then remove all debris and dust from the surface. For such floors, material type "A" or "B" is suitable, up to 10 mm thick. Be sure to glue the joints with special aluminum tape.

The hard coating does not spread on the penofol itself. Firstly, it will not be practical, and secondly, moisture can accumulate on the foil, which will negatively affect any coating. In order not to form dampness, it is recommended to place slats 1.5-2 cm thick or logs on top of the insulation, on which boards are subsequently attached.

Logs should not reach the wall 1-2cm to create ventilation. Before installing wooden structures, they are treated with an antiseptic solution or drying oil. If you insulate the floor with penofol, in this way, you can avoid excessive accumulation of moisture under the main coating.


The main stages of floor insulation using the "pie" method

Conventionally, several stages can be distinguished in the method of using foamed polystyrene:

  • Cleaning of concrete pavement;
  • Penofol is placed on the floor, so that it goes a few centimeters onto the walls;
  • Installation and fixation of wooden bars;
  • Filling the space between the bars with mineral wool, polystyrene plates or other insulation;
  • Fixing the second layer of penofol over the bars or logs;
  • Placement of boards, on top of which 12cm plywood or chipboard is attached.

After that, you can start finishing the floor with linoleum or laminate.

Wooden floor insulation

Usually such an event is held in country houses or cottages. There are two ways to do this: the first is on top of the boards and the second is under the boards.

Warming a wooden floor with penofol on top of the boards is not a complicated process. When laying the foil, we direct it into the room. The joints are glued with a special tape. It is impossible to lay linoleum or laminate on the heat insulator itself.

First place thick plywood or chipboard. It is worth considering that penofol will interfere with the reliable fixation of any wood board or even deform it. Therefore, its thickness should be optimal.

The best way to insulate a wooden floor with styrofoam is to place it under the boards. But for this they must be removed. Usually, insulation is carried out in this way when a change of boards is required.


The use of expanded polystyrene in the "Warm floor" system

Even in such an independent system, it does not hurt, and sometimes it is simply necessary. Penofol under a warm floor is usually placed to prevent heat loss from below the heating elements or to additionally reflect it.

When using electric heaters, the material is placed directly under the system itself. In this case, type "A" or "C" is perfect.

It is better to use penofol for underfloor heating, where water heating elements will be used, with a laminated coating, as they are often filled with cement screed. Cement is a rather aggressive medium and can adversely affect the material, especially when heated.

Penoplex- last generation material. This is a foamed polymer obtained by extrusion. It has low thermal conductivity due to its strong structure with a large number of cells.

Penoplex is produced in plates, plate thickness two to 10 centimeters. It looks a lot like styrofoam. Does not increase the weight of the structure.

Does not absorb moisture. Expanded polystyrene is not affected by fungi and decay processes.

It should be noted that the thermal conductivity of foam plastic is 25 times lower than the thermal conductivity of expanded clay concrete. This factor significantly increases the insulating characteristics.

In addition, the foil layer welded on top of the polyethylene reflects thermal radiation. The material does not have pores - this means that it does not allow air to pass through and, therefore, communicates the properties of a thermos to the insulated structure. Where can it be useful? When warming baths and saunas, which should be a repository of hot and humid air for as long as possible. Also cold floors, for example, a concrete base on the ground floor of the building and a warm floor system device. Let's see how the floors are insulated with penofol in each of these cases.

What happens and how penofol is used

A layer of foamed polyethylene in a foam sheet containing air bubbles, due to which, in fact, insulation occurs, can be a layer from 3 to 10 mm. The foil layer in all modifications of penofol is the same, but can be welded on one side (type "A") or on both sides (type "B"). There is also penofol, which has foil on one side, and an adhesive layer on the other - “self-adhesive” penofol (type “C”). In addition, there is penofol with one layer of foil, which is laminated on top with a layer of polyethylene (ALP type).

Penofol type "A" is usually attached to another insulation (polystyrene, styrodur) with staples or nails. Type "C" can be glued on them or directly on the base. Type "B" is used for stand-alone mounting.

How to lay penofol on a concrete floor

A cold floor for insulation should first be poured with a concrete screed with expanded clay, but it can be replaced by a layer of foam plastic with a thickness of 5 to 10 cm. each side. Joints are glued with aluminum tape.

The moisture from which penofol protects the structure, not being able to pass through it, will settle on it. To prevent this from happening, it is necessary to arrange a space for ventilation with air vents above the foil layer of penofol - holes through which air can freely pass in order to remove this moisture. To do this, slats 1.5-2 cm wide are stuffed onto the penofol from the side of the foil, creating space for air movement. Logs can play the same role if it is decided to lay a wooden floor. Logs and slats need to be impregnated with an antiseptic or drying oil. They should be laid along the entire length of the floor, retreating 1-2 cm from the walls in increments of 35-40 cm. Boards 2-3 cm thick are laid perpendicular to the lags, and a sheet of plywood 12 mm thick is laid on top. You can use plywood 6-8 mm, but lay it in two layers. The finish can be linoleum or laminate.

The device of the "warm floor" system

Penofol (type “A” or “C”) is placed on the base with foil up, heating elements are laid on it, logs are laid between them, on which the floorboard is laid (1st scheme).

If a cement screed is poured over the heating elements (for example, under a tile), an ALP type foam is needed, since the cement mortar is an aggressive environment for aluminum covered with foam (2nd scheme).

In order to isolate the floor from impact noise, foam foam is laid with a margin of 10 cm on each wall. Thus, a "floating floor" system is obtained.

To provide hydro- and vapor barrier, all joints of the canvases are glued with a special aluminum tape.

After laying the heating elements, a reinforcing mesh is laid, after which the floor area is filled with a cement screed. After pouring the solution, the edges of the penofol are trimmed.

This is followed by a rather long period of floor heating and its commissioning.

Insulation of floors with penofol guarantees heat, hydro and noise insulation (reduces impact noise by 20 dB) and ensures uniform heating of the floor surface due to the reflective effect of penofol.
