In appearance, you can’t say that this Volkswagen Polo hatchback is new, everything is very similar to the previous generation. Slightly more chopped bend on the doors and trunk. A new bright blue color is called upon to mark the car on the road, it is not metallic and therefore, as an option, it is inexpensive. And the car in it looks fresh and stands out on the road. And although no revolutions occurred with the appearance, the design is not a bit outdated. The VW Polo is just as lean, austere as the New Balance sneakers. Such a design will remain relevant for a long time, unlike, for example, the artsy and sharply fashionable Koreans.

In terms of size, consider the same, except that the length has increased by 2 mm. 2 millimeters seriously? It was only the Germans who could provide such information and consider it important.

Salon interior

If you buy a new Polo, in order to avoid asking your friends what's new in it, immediately invite them to the salon. Here and a new instrument cluster with two separate wells and a large contrast and informative display in the middle. A modified climate control unit: the usual black plastic that used to frame it was replaced, albeit with less practical, but much nicer glossy aluminum inserts. New multimedia system. And most importantly, a completely cool new steering wheel with a cropped bottom. It has an optimal cross-section, high-quality leather with stitching and thickening in the places of grips.

The interior of the new Polo, thanks to these point changes, began to look much more solid and richer.

In terms of visual perception, now it is not at all inferior to that in the seventh Golf, however, in a tactile way too. The torpedo in the upper part is made of very soft and pliable plastic.

Everything below and on the door is made of hard varieties, but does not creak, except perhaps on sharp paving stones.

Equipment Fresh

This review of the Volkswagen Polo presents the Fresh package. Not only is the richest in itself, but also with an optional panoramic sunroof for almost $ 1,000, it only covers with a mesh curtain. Multimedia

There is no multimedia in the basic configuration, only preparation for 4 speakers. Here we have an optional one with a 5-inch color touch screen that costs about $500, about the same as any Chinese balalaika.

In addition to playing music in mp3 format from an SD card and disk, or connecting your smartphone via AUX, the system allows you to configure some minor parameters of the machine. For example, automatic blocking of locks when driving, which doors will be unlocked after a stop - all or only yours, useful if you have small children or a dumb neighborhood.

Let the menus look rustic, from the era of Windows 95. But, if you choose between a third-party radio and an optional one, I would choose this one for the ability to configure settings. Or black and white with a touchscreen and the same functionality, but cheaper. If you're willing to shell out another $700, you can get the coolest multimedia, with beautiful and modern graphics, Bluetooth, iPod connectivity and eight speakers.

Ergonomics

In terms of ergonomics - very good, everything is at hand and understandable. Cool cruise control, which does not easily maintain the set speed, but allows you to select the desired one in the range from 20 to a very optimistic 210 km / h. For $ 800 you can add active cruise control, which will maintain a given distance to the car in front, accelerate and slow down to a complete stop. Considering that the option is not very expensive, and a similar system on the Golf works almost perfectly, you can take it instead of the sunroof, if only there was left for the rear view camera.

Whatever radio you choose, the display on the dashboard will show the average and instantaneous consumption, coolant temperature, travel time and other useful information. Small claims can be made only to the small climate control buttons, as well as to the false buttons on the steering wheel. Bluetooth was not in our configuration, but the control buttons on the steering wheel were present, which is somewhat misleading.

What Volkswagen is famous for is the attention to detail that you don’t immediately discover.

For example, the ceiling handles in the cabin are equipped with microlifts, the button for the locked central lock is highlighted in a different color. The glove compartment is cooled, even though it is not sheathed with flock, but the lid smoothly lowers, does not fall on the passenger’s knees, and you can literally lose an A4 sheet in size in it.

Power windows with automatic mode. This gives the feeling that you are in a car at least a class higher. They give no savings, only as you can hear the work of all electrical mechanisms.

Salon rear and front

Further in the Volkswagen Polo review, we will consider the rear and front seats. By the way, the feeling of a larger car arises in the back seat. Places in the knees are no less than in the seventh Golf. Three of us will not be very comfortable in width, and two passengers will have one glass of company and that's it, even there is no armrest.

The front seat we have in accordance with the configuration of the sports type: comfortable, hard, with good lateral support. Minimum adjustments, even the lumbar support can not be adjusted. And height adjustment is an option, but only for the passenger seat, for the driver it comes in the base for free.

There are not so many compartments for small things, but you can easily put one and a half liter bottles in the side pockets on the doors, you can put your phone in a niche behind the cup holders, a wallet and keys in the armrest. The only thing missing is a place for glasses. There are also optional boxes under the front seats.

Trunk

If there was also a trunk, like in golf, but no. The volume of 280 liters is not a record by the standards of the class, but this is quite enough for a weekly purchase in a supermarket. In order not to pull heavy packages over the high side, you can raise the floor using a special shelf. The seats fold down for free.

If you are satisfied with the backrest, which is folded entirely or, as in our case, separate, but for a little money, its volume increases to 950 liters. Well, a flat floor does not work, they go up a little. This did not stop me from transferring a two-meter carpet to my Polo, which, although it almost rested on the windshield, reached its destination without excesses.


Engine

The motors in the new Polo are different. Goodbye voracious and low-powered 1.4 liters. Instead, there is now a 75-horsepower liter naturally aspirated three-cylinder engine, its turbocharged version with 110 horsepower. And 1.2 TSI, which even though it already was, received two options for 90 and 110. Looks like it depends on the degree of forcing. A liter turboless one goes only on the “handle”, but the rest are either with 5-6 speed mechanics or with a 7-speed DSG.

We have here 1,2, 90 horsepower DSG. This engine can fool you twice, as soon as you start up the sound will resemble a diesel rumble, but you should get out into the operational spaces, step on the pedal a little and up to a speed of 80 km / h it even presses a little into the seat. But already after 80, the acceleration turns sour a little and the final time to a hundred is about 11 seconds. After that, under a monotonous sound, there is a power acceleration to 160, and with time and a long straight line, you can reach the maximum 185.

If we take into account the traffic rules in force in our country, then there will be no problems in the range of permitted speeds when overtaking. And if you can’t live, you want to drive 130 and briskly overtake trucks, then you should pay attention to the 110 strong version. She has a claimed acceleration time to hundreds of 9.7, and after that she will obviously be more dynamic.

Test Drive

Turning on the air conditioner had almost no effect on the dynamics. And if you have activated the maximum economy mode in your life, then it may make sense to wait for the diesel versions to appear. They will come out at the beginning of 2015 with the same volume of 1.4 liters, turbine, but with different levels of boost for 75 and 105 horsepower. DSG they are not supposed to, only five-speed mechanics. But the consumption in urban mode is another 1l-1.5l lower, and on the highway it’s some fantastic 4-4.5.

There is a slight jerk between the first and second, which, coupled with a very active braking of the engine, is a little annoying in toffee, you may need to adapt. Very fast reaction to kick down, in a split second, throws gears down 3 steps. It is possible that the machine is actively braking by the engine due to active energy recovery. After all, a lot has been done to save money.

The start-stop option is included in the basic package, which turns off the engine at almost every long stop. If there is sufficient charge to keep the air conditioner and other equipment running. Fuel consumption

The system allows you to save about 5% of fuel, and given that the engine starts with a noticeable push, and sometimes with a delay, after you release the brake, you may want to spit on the environment and 300 g of gasoline. In our active test mode, the consumption was about 7 liters, but if you are a calm driver, like me, then you can count on a passport consumption of 6 liters.

When you test drive a Volkswagen while driving on the highway, the numbers are as follows: 110 - 5 liters, 130 - 6.5 liters, 160 about 9 liters per hundred.

Noise isolation

The level of sound insulation after the Lexus, of course, is flawed. But even on the track, you can safely communicate with passengers in the back seat. When driving at a speed of 80 km / h on smooth asphalt, the loudest sound in the cabin will be a very muffled hum of the engine.

Aerodynamic noise appears only after 120.

The pendant keeps a “vow of silence”, no matter how you torture it. You can find fault if you wish, somewhere behind the sound from tires on rough or wet asphalt resonates a little in the voids. And the windows are thin, which is why the truck standing next to you can hear a little more than we would like.

Suspension

The suspension was a pleasant surprise. Structurally, it has not changed, it has only been reconfigured. Front MacPherson, rear semi-beam, which usually causes a grimace of pain on the faces of car enthusiasts.

But personally, it doesn’t matter to me what’s there, but it’s important how the car drives. And Polo allows you to drive on our roads without slowing down. The suspension is incredibly energy intensive. Yes, it shakes, especially the ass bounces on large bumps, but most of the bumps are transmitted to the salon roundly. Medium-sized speed bumps and failed hatches can be flown at speeds of 40 km / h and above without breakdowns.

Control

In terms of handling, everything suited me, despite the clearance of 14 cm, which is enough for any edge. The high body of the Polo leans moderately in turns and only on long arcs, on bumps rearranges the rear a little.

If you are not a race car driver, then you will only find out that you do not have a multi-link at the service after many thousands of kilometers, when instead of 100-500 rubber bands, you will only need to change a couple. And in which case, the non-switchable ESP will insure, this time not an option. During the test, her work was practically not noticed, which means that she works well.

Driving a hatchback is very pleasant, it’s not for nothing that they say that Volkswagen’s electromechanical amplifiers are set up exemplarily. The steering wheel is light at low speed and informative when typing, but not overweight, such as it should be.

The brake pedal does not have a record short travel, but it allows you to slow down smoothly and predictably. The new Polo is equipped with four airbags in the base, there can be 6 in total. As well as an emergency braking system after a collision.

Results

I was not surprised by the introduction of LED headlights or active cruise control in this class. These electronic chips will sooner or later be installed in Lanos. But the driving performance of the Polo was a real surprise. We were in the camp of those who believed that a small car could not be comfortable. But Volkswagen literally destroyed my cozy little world.

Everything has a price, and in the case of the Polo, it is not small. Our version dragged on almost $ 27,000, but we have this maximum of additional options. The base price for a two-door car with a handle is 16,000, the equipment is empty as a tambourine.

In the same one, but with a machine gun already 19,000. It makes no sense to take the base, since there is Life, the best option, already with air conditioning, auto mirrors, foglights, four doors, a bunch of other things and costs only a thousand more. There is another intermediate equipment Comfortline. So that it would normally drive and drive about 22,000 on a machine. At first, it seems that for such a small car, this is somehow a lot, but after spending a week with the Volkswagen Polo, I perfectly understood what they were asking for money for.

This is the gold standard for B-class cars.

It feels like driving a full-fledged C. And here is the question that torments me, why is the C-class called a golf class, and the B-class is not a Polo class? A misunderstanding, by God.

The final stage of the outgoing year in a joint project Car Club of Karelia and the Norden company, the official representative of Volkswagen cars in Karelia, was a test drive of the Volkswagen Polo hatchback. Having previously tested Jetta and Polo sedan, we were convinced that adaptation to difficult road conditions, together with reliability and efficiency, are the main features of Volkswagen cars, thanks to which the popularity of these models among Russians is constantly growing.

The Volkswagen Polo hatchback is a relatively inexpensive multi-purpose vehicle that can be used for everyday commuting as well as small group travel. Experts note that the desire to make the B-class compact hatchback look like a C-class representative is quite understandable. Why buy a Golf if there is an opportunity to save money and buy a VW Polo - the difference in the cost of these two models is about 180,000 rubles, which is a fairly significant criterion.

In the external design of the VW Polo hatchback, first of all, one can note its dynamic features - stylish “squinted” headlights, a narrow slot in the radiator grille, a sloping hood, a large but neat bumper. The swollen wheel arches and the relief of the lower part of the doors stand out well in this Volkswagen model, the hatchback is distinguished by a powerful rear roof pillar and regular doorways. The machine has a special body structure, which provides it with excellent maneuverability. The compact Polo hatchback is indeed very similar to the Golf. Correct, neat, with a strict appearance, the car is endowed with all the features of the recognizable Volkswagen brand. The trunk in this car is much smaller than in the sedan - its volume is 290 liters.

However, a large travel bag can be placed there without difficulty, since access to the trunk is open and very convenient. One click on the Volkswagen logo and it opens easily. And if you fold the rear seats, you can get a good cargo area. Salon VW Polo hatchback is less spacious than in a sedan. Motorists of high stature and even more so may seem small. However, do not forget that this is a B-class car, not an executive sedan. Behind two adults will be quite comfortable. The driver's and front passenger's seat are height adjustable and have a comfortable design. Between them is a comfortable armrest. The fabric upholstery of the seats is made of high quality material with a pattern. Decorative chrome trims bring bright visual accents to the interior of the cabin, which from a practical point of view is perfectly complemented by reading lights and the convenience of transforming the rear seat with an asymmetrically divided backrest. It is impossible not to note the truly German ergonomics - everything is intuitively and clearly located here.

The plastic is pleasant enough to the touch, the convenient shape of the front instrument panel is made in light colors and is visually calmly perceived, the steering column is adjustable in height and reach. Depending on the configuration, the car is equipped with electric windows with automatic closers front and rear, electric drive and heated side mirrors, in which turn signals are duplicated, headlight washers, an mp3 audio system, depending on the configuration of the VW Polo hatchback, it can also have an auto-navigator, air conditioning, box and some other features.

As soon as you turn the key in the ignition, the side lights of the VW Polo hatchback immediately light up. On the road, the car behaves obediently and confidently, the 7-speed DSG automatic transmission has a Sport mode, in which the car behaves faster and accelerates to hundreds quickly enough, in addition, there is a manual control mode.

The suspension in a hatchback is softer than in a sedan, and, sitting behind the wheel of a hatchback, you generally feel higher above the road. VW Polo hatchback is presented in several versions, which are equipped with two engine options - 1.2 and 1.4 liters. Their power can be 60, 70, 85 or 105 hp. Thus, this car is suitable for sedate and leisurely drivers, as well as for those who like to drive. Compared to previous generations, the engines have been significantly improved, further improving the efficiency of the vehicles. Appetite in urban mode is moderate - 7-7.5 liters. Depending on the configuration, options are available with manual and automatic transmissions.

Today, the B-class, along with the golf class, is the most popular size of a mass-produced passenger car, and the competition here is especially high. The well-being of most car companies depends on how successful they have turned out to be the main small car in the lineup, and what is the degree of people's love. To do this, it is not enough just to call it folk, it is necessary that it correspond to the name and in reality.

In Europe, Volkswagen often manages to do this. So the jury of the European competition "Car of the Year 2010" was most impressed with the Volkswagen Polo. But, as you know, the situation here is different, and what is good for Europe is not always unconditionally good for Russia either. Is Polo really that good, and how did he bribe European experts? We had the opportunity to try this car in action.

On our test this time, a 5-door Volkswagen Polo hatchback with an 85-horsepower 1.4-liter engine, combined with a 7-speed dual-clutch robotic transmission. And what is stated in the test refers specifically to the hatchback, since the Russian-assembled Polo sedan is in many ways a different car, and there is a separate conversation about it.

The strict look of the Polo is good, it is stylish and concise - a real German car, not a single controversial line, everything is clear, functional and harmonious. Such is the interior: it is a bit boring, but it is assembled from high-quality materials, cozy and excellent in terms of ergonomics. You immediately get used to it, and after sitting a little, you completely forget that you recently drove a different car. The driver's seat with a retractable armrest is also adjustable in height, a comfortable steering wheel - in two planes. But the main thing here is that the interior evokes a feeling of reliability and good quality in everything. With a lack of reasons for criticism, you already begin to look for real trifles: if the transmission lever is in “parking”, it is impossible to pull an ashtray glass out of its nest. Visibility is good and the dimensions feel light, but the slightly truncated exterior mirrors are a bit small.


Three people can sit in the rear seats with acceptable comfort, but for a person taller than the average seat in the legs back to back, if the same driver is driving.

The neat trunk, which opens by pressing the emblem, is medium in volume and has a roomy underground, under which there is also a full-size “reserve”, but the loading height is high because of this - 725 mm.

A simple and convenient transformation of the rear seats allows you to increase the luggage space to 950 liters - also an average figure. But a simple transformation of the interior without any special layout frills today no longer satisfies many consumers. I would like additional compartments for small items in the floor or under the seats, on the front panel, on some machines you can also find a folding front passenger seat, which significantly increases the length of the luggage being transported. Of all this, the Polo has only pull-out drawers under the front seats.

In motion, the peppy motor tries with might and main, but the damped accelerator pedal slows down a little, forcing you to make mistakes with the exact dosage of gas, especially at low speed. Next, the “robot” begins to get confused in gears, so pushing in traffic jams on a Volkswagen is not particularly convenient. But to go faster is more pleasant, the gears begin to switch smoothly and in a timely manner, the acceleration is smooth and confident. When overtaking, the box shifts down two or even three gears, providing normal traction during acceleration. In S mode, acceleration is a little more energetic, but it's barely noticeable, the main thing is that the delays in the actions of the gas pedal almost disappear. With a calm, uniform movement, the seventh immediately turns on and the little car rolls quietly and smoothly, saving fuel. Soundproofing is not bad, but in certain driving modes the voice of the motor breaks through, tires and pebbles rustle in the rear arches.

The adapted suspension with increased clearance, in general, is well suited for our roads, but still it is a little harsh, often repeating the microprofile in too much detail, sometimes transferring itching to the controls. Large potholes are passed either quite smoothly and silently, or unexpectedly given with tangible blows. Therefore, on rough roads, you still have to slow down more than desired. Maybe this is the fault of the Kazan roads that were broken beyond measure this spring, and the chassis is set up normally? Be that as it may, we have to ride on them, we, unfortunately, are not given others. The passport data says that the clearance is 170 mm. Nothing like that, at Volkswagen, someone is doing postscripts. In reality, it seems that there are not even a hundred and fifty, sometimes you start to touch the defense on seemingly harmless bumps. Although, admittedly, the Polo is far from the lowest car in the B-class. But on a flat road, the car rolls superbly with minimal rolls, recklessly reacting to steering turns, screwing into turns under the gas release. Our Polo does not have a stabilization system, but the behavior of the car is reliably controlled by the steering wheel and gas. I would like only a little more reactive effort "steering wheel", especially in the near-zero zone.

On a chair, hard in German, with good friction properties of the upholstery, after a few hours of driving, the back nevertheless begins to ache, apparently the lack of lumbar support affects. Although, in general, the level of comfort and driving properties of the Polo is at a good modern level.

To date, Polo is indeed one of the strongest players in the B-class, and in this we stand in solidarity with the members of the jury of the European Car of the Year competition. The car gives the owner a great combination of consumer qualities. True, you have to pay an anti-people amount for this. But, in fairness, it should be noted that in the same class there are cars that are more expensive. A standard Polo with such units costs almost 600 thousand rubles. Our option in the Comfortline configuration with a set of additional options (air conditioning, front armrest, fog lights, leather steering wheel, power rear windows, winter package, 6 stereo speakers) pulled 708,210 rubles. The cost of well-packed cars with a more powerful turbo engine can even exceed a million. And the simplest hatchback with a 60-horsepower engine costs about 480,000 rubles. It is in Germany that Polo can rightfully be called popular and considered a trendsetter of the genre, as is the case with Golf in the golf class. And we have another Polo closer to the people - a Russian-assembled sedan, which, with a more powerful engine, costs from 413 thousand rubles. Now, if in Kaluga they began to produce, in addition to the sedan, a hatchback for the same 400,000 rubles! However, as for the sedan, it is more affordable than the German hatchback, not only because it is assembled in Russia. What is the difference? This is what we are going to find out in one of our next tests.

Veteran of the Russian B-segment. It has been on sale for seven and a half years, since the fall of 2010. Surprisingly, the “German” loses to only three competitors - the cheap Grant and the “Koreans” Kia Rio and Hyundai Solaris, which, being already successful, have recently been updated.

Except for the dead, and therefore alien to us, European engines, Polo has noticeably matured and matured. Unfortunately, there will be no hatchback in Russia, and a new sedan will not appear soon - not this year. In place of the Koreans, I would be glad that Volkswagen is in no hurry with the new four-door. If a fresh Polo appeared on our market right now, it would certainly bypass the declining Solaris in terms of sales.

The only engine in the European range that can be called normal from the point of view of the Russian consumer is a 150-horsepower 1.5-liter TSI gasoline engine that replaced the 1.4 TSI engine. Therefore, our Polo, most likely, will continue to be equipped with 1.6-liter aspirated.

Polo's transition to the modular MQB-A0 platform (a shortened version of the widely used MQB) is not a hindrance at all. The Germans put these naturally aspirated engines on the seventh generation Golf and Octavia A7 a few years ago, and in conjunction with a classic automatic, not a DSG robot.




Spectacular and efficient LED lighting is likely to continue in the process of adapting Polo for Russia. This technology is getting cheaper, replacing the bi-xenon light that is available in our market for the current generation Polo sedan.

The GT version of the Volkswagen Polo sedan appeared on the Russian market relatively recently. In addition to the fact that this is the most expensive version of the budget sedan of the German "people's brand" (820,000 rubles with a manual gearbox, by the way, 6-speed, and 890,000 rubles with a DSG robot, by the way, 7-speed), the car also has a radiator grill in the form of honeycombs and the GT nameplate on it.

The list of other differences between the GT version and the regular Polo includes: unique for this model, a sports steering wheel cut at the bottom, interior trim with sports elements, aluminum pedal covers, exclusive Ducubo seat upholstery, advanced multimedia with a rear-view camera, 16-inch alloy wheels, darkened taillights, twin tailpipes and a sporty rear bumper.

Also - extended thresholds, signature silver color Tungsten Silver and with a black roof and black wide stripes on the hood and trunk, black side mirrors with electric adjustment and heating. The stripes, by the way, look sad - they are all not paint, but stickers (apparently, so that you can tear them off), and it looks pretty handicraft.

The engine here is the same one that is available in the most powerful "civilian" version of the Polo - 1.4 liters TSI with 125 horsepower and 200 Nm of torque.

But the Germans would not have been Germans if they had not demonstrated at least in some way the economy they love so much, as they say, “on cats”. Okay, we won’t find fault with the fact that the budget sedan will not have power seats, a sunroof, heated rear seats. But why, for example, does it not have navigation? And then, it's still some kind of, but an electronic system. Requiring some effort for its installation-installation. But when we already start saving on light bulbs, this, in my opinion, does not climb into any gates. Why in a car, albeit of a budget level, but in the top of the top (!), Let me remind you again, configuration, for 890 thousand rubles (!!) - there is no glove compartment illumination? And why is there no light for the back row at all? A trifle, you say? But sometimes it's the little things that mean a lot. Quite honestly, I can say that if I were considering buying a car in this budget category for myself, then the Polo GT that everyone liked would be excluded from the number of options considered because of the lack of light for rear passengers. In my opinion, this is a shame. Because the thing is cheap and must be in any car. Even in the basic package. Not to mention the most expensive.

In addition to the unpleasant trifles described above, the car’s budget comes out in sadly hard and uncharacteristically cheap plastic for Volkswagen sedans, and you don’t even want to open the glove compartment once again - it closes with such an unpleasant and brand-inconsistent cheap rattling sound. But the armrest has a proprietary Volkswagen simple and reliable height adjustment - this is already a trifle from the category of pleasant ones.

From the same pleasant - the fact that, unlike many other things, they did not save money on power windows - all four have an automatic mode. Even surprised a little.

Even in terms of staffing, I was somewhat not pleased that they did not put a heated steering wheel in the car. Apparently, it is assumed that for a lover to drive (GT version, after all), such tenderness as a warm steering wheel is completely unnecessary.

The declared fuel consumption is 7.3 liters of the 95th in the city, 5.7 liters in the combined cycle and 4.8 liters on the highway. In practice, more, but still quite economical. According to the test results, we got 9-9.5 in traffic in the city, 7.5-8 in mixed mode and less than 7 liters on the highway. So a tank of 55 liters should be enough for a long time.

It rides very well, in a Volkswagen way confidently, there are no rolls. Managed perfectly, as expected from a car of this brand, albeit a budget segment. Power - not in excess, but enough for the city, although with acceleration and overtaking on the highway, despite seemingly acceptable indicators of power and torque, sometimes problems arise. At the same time, sound insulation is very good for this class - it is not noisier in the cabin than, say, in the Passat.

The suspension does not demonstrate any sporting characteristics - it is as soft as in a regular Polo, sometimes it even seems to be even softer - small and medium-sized bumps pass with a bang.

The car is offered on the Russian market with three engine options: 1.6 gasoline for 90 hp, 1.6 gasoline for 110 hp. and 1.4 gasoline turbo for 125 hp Drive - only front. 90-horsepower cars are available only with mechanics, 110-horsepower - with mechanics or automatic, 125-horsepower - with mechanics or a DSG robot. Six trim options (including the top-end sports GT). The price range is from 580 to 890 thousand rubles. Like all other Polo sedans, the car is assembled at the Volkswagen plant in Kaluga.
