Appointment of rubber cuffs for sewer pipes. Cuffs for sealing sewer pipes Rubber cuffs for cast-iron sewerage

Sewer rubber cuffs can be made from different materials, there are also different types of devices. Hydraulic seals are used in industry, for equipping a sewage system in private houses, cottages and apartments.

Cuffs for cast iron sewerage are made of polyurethane and rubber compounds such as rubber, paronite, silicone and rubber. In the manufacture, only 100% rubber is used, no polymer is added. Thanks to this composition, high elasticity, strength and fastening density with the connected parts are ensured. Polymer and rubber also provide resistance to high and low temperatures, are resistant to aggressive substances, can be used in the presence of acids and with increased rigidity of working resources.

The sealing cuff for sewerage also comes in various types:

  • stock;
  • piston;
  • universal (for rods and pistons).

Also, the sealing rubber cuff for sewerage can be internal and external. An internal seal is used in cast iron pipes to connect plastic nozzles with different diameters. Also used to connect a corrugated hose to the drain of household plumbing fixtures (for example, connecting to the sewage system of a washing machine or dishwasher). The outer seal, in turn, is used to connect to a socketless sewer structure.

There is also a three-lobed sewer transitional cuff, which facilitates the transition from a cast-iron pipeline to a plastic one.

Cuffs for sewer pipes - details that ensure the tightness of the connection (flexible - much more reliable than traditional caulking with a cement lock device). They are cylindrical (rarely ellipsoidal and other forms) products with thick walls made of rubber, PVC, polyurethane, silicone, paronite. Cuffs are mainly used for joining cast-iron and plastic pipes, connecting plumbing equipment to the sewer network (ready-made fittings for modern systems go on sale already equipped with sealing rings).

Dimensions of cuffs for sewer pipes

There is a whole size range of sealing cuffs: 32–100 mm in diameter, 25–120 mm in height. The size is indicated in two numbers: the first indicates the outer diameter, the second - the inner. The difference is the wall thickness. For example, a cuff 110x120, where 110 is the inner diameter, 120 is the outer diameter, the wall thickness is 10 mm. You need to recognize the height (for some reason they don’t indicate it, at least in online stores).

Standard dimensions of parts for the transition from cast iron to plastic

Inner diameter External diameter Height
50 72 110
110 124 80
32 50 22
32 72 32

When connecting the elements, physical efforts are applied - the pipe enters the rubber ring with difficulty, however, it is recommended to use silicone sealant.

Cuff Practice

With the help of cuffs, plumbing equipment (sinks, sinks, bathtubs, toilet bowls, etc.) and household appliances (washing machines, dishwashers) are connected to the sewer network, sewer pipes are connected. Plastic is connected to plastic by means of special fittings equipped with sealing rubber rings, and cast iron is connected to plastic either with adapters, or couplings, or only cuffs.

Both external and internal cuffs are used for joining cast-iron and plastic pipes (for socket and socketless structures). Work in stages:

  • they clean the connecting part of the cast-iron pipe - it must be absolutely clean to ensure proper adhesion of the sealant;
  • apply sealant to the cuff and insert it into the socket;
  • a plastic tube is inserted into the cuff.

If pipes have to be cut, this must be done correctly - the cut must be even (no notches, even if they seem microscopic and are difficult to detect). Having cut off, a chamfer is removed from the part.

In order of action, the docking of smooth pipes is not much different from socket pipes - the sealant must be applied to the cuff on both sides, since a coupling is put on top of it.

Scheme of installing a cuff on a sewer pipe (connection of smooth pipes)

Siphon connection

For this purpose, the use of a sealing cuff is mandatory (there is always water in the siphon - it serves as a kind of shutter). There are no difficulties in connecting the siphon - it is quite possible to cope on your own without having special knowledge. First, the siphon itself is assembled - according to the instructions (the accompanying documentation must be available, otherwise you should not buy equipment: the configuration is different, and the assembly instructions vary accordingly). Then connect the pipe:

  • to the siphon
  • to the sewer (simply inserted into the fitting hole intended for this).

If the fitting on the riser is equipped with an o-ring, the cuff is used only to connect the pipe to the siphon.

What are the cuffs for sewer pipes

This is predominantly a round wide sealing ring, sometimes with a corrugated part. Cuffs are internal and external. The internal ones are used to connect socket structures, the external ones are used for smooth pipes (in addition to the sealant, a coupling is installed).

Sealing cuffs with corrugated part

Cuffs are most often made of rubber - an elastic, tightly adjoining material that provides a reliable flexible connection. The shape of a part depends on its function.

The eccentric cuff is a branch pipe connected to each other with an offset, that is, the centers of both parts are in different planes. Traditionally, the part is called a cuff, but this is a special shaped part for connecting to the toilet network. It is equipped with O-rings and does not require the use of sealant (with the exception of connecting to an old cast iron riser, when sealant is used for greater reliability, given the difference in materials).

Unfortunately, due to too much displacement of the connected elements, the eccentric cuff cannot always be used (although some craftsmen manage to insert one into the other, building a strange design) - in such cases, the toilet is connected by means of a corrugation.

Parts come in different configurations, but sometimes such an offset is required that it is impossible to connect with their help - in such cases, a corrugation is installed.

Corrugated cuff

The corrugation is similar to the eccentric cuff, but the implementation of the displacement is different - it is achieved due to the flexible corrugated sleeve, and not the location of the parts relative to each other. Thus, the displacement can be large, but it is necessary to set the desired bending angle of the corrugated part so that the drains leave freely (otherwise blockages are inevitable).

Connection via corrugation

The main advantage of corrugations is flexibility. Due to this property of the part, it is almost always possible to connect the toilet to the sewer without errors. The main disadvantage is the short service life. Due to the same flexibility, the walls quickly wear out, and the part becomes unusable. When choosing a corrugation, you need to give preference to thick-walled, reinforced.

Installation is theoretically simple (the parts are tritely inserted into each other according to the attached instructions), but we do not recommend installing it yourself (if there are no skills): the cuff functions normally under certain conditions (bending angle, slope, stretching length), and if they are not created, the system will work will be violated (which is fraught with floods due to blockages).

Attention! Corrugated connections with their flexibility and extensibility give rise to the temptation to transfer the toilet to some other, more convenient angle, while the riser, whatever one may say, remains in place. A citizen not burdened with plumbing knowledge thinks that with the help of these harmonicas he can easily screw a white friend to the sewer. It is possible to transfer. And you can connect. It’s just that all this will not work if there is not a sufficient slope (non-pressure sewer networks are laid under a certain slope; the pressure arranged by the drain tank is only enough for a toilet bowl connected directly to the riser - without meter trunks).

So reading a newspaper / memoirs, sitting on the toilet, occasionally looking out the window, will not succeed - or you will have to erect a plumbing miracle on a pedestal and screw a ladder to it (here it’s not far from the attic window).

On a pedestal

This problem also has a solution - the installation of a pumping system that forcibly sends wastewater to the sewer. However, such drastic changes will require permission to redevelop, and these are:

  • project development (yes, just to move the toilet a meter);
  • project payment;
  • its coordination in the instance and everything connected with it;
  • payment of a fee for approval;
  • the commission that accepts the transfer of equipment (they look at how far they have departed from the project, if they have departed);
  • payment of a fee for a commission.

In the text, everything is easy - the text cannot convey the effort being made. However, we all know what is transported by sewer pipes (that is, what will flood the apartment / house when incorrectly installed cuffs cause a flood), and therefore, when it comes to sewage, we strongly recommend that even owners of restless hands turn to specialists. Especially when it comes to cast iron risers: cast iron is brittle and must be handled with extreme care.

In domestic sewer pipelines, effluents are transported in most cases by gravity, that is, there is no increased pressure in the system. But even in such conditions, without proper sealing of the joints, leaks cannot be avoided. Rubber cuffs are used to seal pipe joints, fittings and branch pipes of plumbing fixtures, reliably protecting joints from leaks. What are sealing gum, what they are and how they are used in practice, you will learn by reading the article.

For sealing to be effective, cuffs must have the following properties:

  • elasticity;
  • elasticity;
  • the ability to withstand temperature changes within certain limits;
  • strength and long service life.

These properties are fully possessed by rubber products, therefore, sealing sleeves and cuffs for sewage pipes and transitional fittings are made by varieties of this material, such as:

  • actually rubber;
  • paronite;
  • rubber;
  • silicone.

Sometimes manufacturers add polymeric substances to the rubber composition, which makes sealing gum for sewer pipes more rigid, less convenient during installation work, but at the same time wear-resistant and durable.

Some types of cuffs, for example, those equipped with adapters for connecting the toilet drain to the sewer pipe, are made of polyethylene. In conditions of a large diameter of the connected holes (at least 110 mm) of often irregular geometry, this material demonstrates better tightness and wear resistance (rubber cuffs have to be replaced with similar ones after dismantling).

Types and sizes of cuffs

Sealing elements for a sewer pipe can be divided into two categories:

  • sealing;
  • transitional.

The former are used for joining sections of a sewer pipeline of the same diameter. According to the method of application, such cuffs are:

  • outdoor;
  • internal.

The difference between them is only in the nature of the installation. Before joining, the outer sealing rubber bands are put on top of the joining pipe, the inner ones are placed in a special socket of the socket (joining expansion). Usually on sale a plastic sewer pipe comes with an internal rubber seal installed. To the shaped elements (corners, crosses, revisions), the cuffs get separately.

Transition cuffs will be needed if you need to hermetically join pipes of different diameters or made of different materials (plastic / cast iron). For example, the most popular "transitions" are cuffs 50/40, 50/25, 50/32, without which it is impossible to qualitatively join a flexible corrugated pipe for drains of washing machines and dishwashers, showers and bathtubs, sinks with a PVC pipe with a diameter of 50 mm. Such seals are made in the form of an irregular truncated cone. With a wide end, they are inserted into a 50 mm plastic pipe. At the narrowed end, a hole is made for the appropriate size of the tip of the drain corrugation.

Less often, it is necessary to bring a flexible corrugated sleeve coming from the sewer siphon of plumbing fixtures directly into the cast-iron socket. Here, rubber transitional seals are used, having an expanded end 72 (for cast iron) and a hole for entering the corrugation tip 25.32 and 40 mm. Cuffs measuring 72 by 50 and 124 by 110 will help to securely dock the cast-iron with the PVC sewer pipe.

Mounting Features

There are no problems with the installation of transitional cuffs connecting corrugations and 50 mm plastic pipelines. The elastic is easily inserted into the socket and the tip of the flexible pipes easily enters the hole. You will have to work a little when installing the "transition" in cast iron. It will be necessary to clean the bell from old sealant and other blockages.

It is also easy to join sections of a 50 mm sewer pipeline where internal sealing cuffs are used. The end of the pipe, if it is not cut, enters the socket with a pre-installed seal without undue effort. If a fragment of the pipeline is cut off, using an abrasive (file, emery wheel) at the cut end, a conical edge is made (similar to the factory one). To facilitate the connection of 50 mm pipes, ordinary water is suitable as a lubricant.

Pipes with a diameter of 110 mm are harder to connect and water will no longer help here. In this case, a special plumbing lubricant is used. Home craftsmen use improvised automotive oils to reduce friction, although this may adversely affect the durability of the rubber seal.

Important! Some engine and transmission oils can corrode the rubber used in sealing and adapter cuffs, so it is not recommended to use these lubricants when joining sewer pipes. If there is no special lubricant, Vaseline or glycerin can be used.

Due to the presence on the shelves of construction special stores of a complete set of sealing and transition cuffs, the hermetic assembly of the sewer pipeline, as well as connecting plumbing fixtures to it, is not particularly difficult. The cuffs are of different sizes and purposes, so now it is not a problem to join any sections of the sewer pipe or toilet bowl coupling.

The principle of gravity implies the operation of the sewage system without pressure, however, even in this case, leaks appear at the joints. Thanks to rubber sealing cuffs for sewer pipes, the efficiency and durability of the drainage system increase, so no pipe connection can do without them. They are used in bidet and toilet outlets, when installing drains from sinks, bathtubs and household appliances. The main purpose of the products is to create tight joints and prevent leaks. The service life of the seals is quite long, but if necessary, they are easily replaced.

Definition and purpose of the sewer cuff

annular space seal

Various materials are used for manufacturing. Products in the form of corrugated pipes and rings are intended for use in production and in residential buildings. Elastic polyurethane, silicone and rubber elements are used to seal joints of plastic pipes, fittings, various types of adapters, giving them strength and eliminating leaks.

Details are classified according to their purpose:

  • Rod have a seat between the rod and the inner surface of the cylinder. Provide tightness during the translational and reciprocating movement of the rod.
  • Piston are used to prevent the ingress of the working medium into the gaps between the piston and the hydraulic cylinder. The advantage of using them is to preserve the freedom of movement of moving elements.
  • Universal can work in any conditions.

Depending on the type of connection, the cuffs can be sealing, providing reliable tightness, and transitional, allowing you to easily connect elements of different diameters.

Production material

Raw materials for the production of seals are selected depending on the operating conditions of the product and the corresponding physical and chemical properties of the substance. The material must meet the basic requirements: elasticity, strength, budget, the ability to withstand temperature extremes, long service life.

Best of all, rubber corresponds to the advanced conditions, from which various models of sealing cuffs and adapters are made. To give the material the desired properties, silicone, rubber and polyurethane are added to the composition of the rubber mixture. The resulting compound gives rubber products additional advantages:

  • resistance to corrosive chemicals;
  • strength;
  • reliability;
  • resistance to temperature changes and pressure of the environment.

When carrying out external and internal sewerage from cast-iron pipes, other types of seals are used. Connections are minted with a tourniquet, which is treated with resin, making sure that it does not get into the pipe and cause blockage.

Types and sizes of cuffs

Plumbing cuffs

Seals can be installed both inside and outside. In the first case, they serve to connect plastic pipes of different diameters or to connect washing machines and dishwashers to a drain system. If it is necessary to connect pipes without sockets, seals are mounted on top of the parts.

The transitional sewer cuff provides a connection between cast-iron branches and plastic pipes. The length of the adapter with D 124/110 is 80 mm and is used for connecting toilet bowls, with D 72/50 - 110 mm for connecting other plumbing fixtures.

The dimensions of the sealing rings correspond to the diameters of standard pipes 32-100 mm, and the length can vary from 25 to 120 mm. Seals 50*40, 50*25, 50*32 are used when connecting washing machines, sinks, washbasins, showers, dishwashers.

Mounting Features

There are two ways to install seals. The choice depends on the presence of a cast-iron socket.

If the sewer pipes are in good condition:

  1. Using a chisel, clean the bell from caulking material and mortar.
  2. Delete the old element.
  3. Prepare the expansion of the cast-iron outlet, remove dirt and wipe with a rag.
  4. Apply sealant to the outside of the rubber seal and insert it into the socket.

It is not required to additionally apply silicone to the outer side of the pipeline, since after drying a reliable connection of the elements is formed.

Sealing cuff for external sewerage

In cases where it is not possible to remove old sewer pipes, they are cut off, the edge is made in the form of a cone to ensure easy installation. Since the drainage system is usually active in multi-storey buildings, it is better to choose the morning time for work, when most of the neighbors are at work.

Shut off hot and cold water in the basement to reduce the volume of drains. During the preparatory work, the open sewer pipe is plugged with a rag to block access to gases and dirty water. The cut is cleaned of notches so that in the future they do not cause the formation of garbage plugs.

In the absence of a bell, the second method is used:

  1. Apply silicone to the inside of the fitting.
  2. Pull the prepared rubber seal onto the cut end of the cast-iron pipe.
  3. Perform wiring from plastic pipes.

When installing installations, there are times when it is necessary to connect a pipe with a diameter of 90 mm or 95 mm to a conventional cast iron sewer with d 110 mm. In this case, the Geberit adapter 367928 is used. It fits perfectly into the cast-iron socket, and on the other hand allows you to connect a plastic product of a non-standard size. To facilitate installation, liquid soap is applied to the parts. Automotive oil is sometimes used, but it can reduce the performance of a rubber product, reducing its life.

When connecting pipes 95 mm and 100 mm to a standard sewer, cuffs are used. They are straight or eccentric. Cast iron pipe has a socket, so the connection will not be tight. In this case, a piece of pipe 5 cm long is cut off, smeared with liquid soap. Then the resulting ring is put on the product, which is already tightly seated in the socket. A product with an eccentric allows you to save space in the bathroom, just turn it to the desired position, in which the mounting elements deviate towards the drain pipe.

Advantages and disadvantages of cuffs for sewer pipes

Rubber cuff transitional from cast iron to plastic

Advantages of rubber products:

  • good performance;
  • long service life;
  • low cost;
  • the use of modern technologies in the manufacture, quality control at all stages of production;
  • resistance to medium pressure within 0.5 atm. up to 1.5 atm.;
  • wide range of;

In cast iron sewer sockets, only rubber rings are used, which have high elasticity and strength. The seal prevents leaks, but the disadvantage of the part is its exactingness to the condition of the cast-iron sockets. Even with minor chips, the tightness is broken.

The cost of products is low, for example, an Ostendorf 110 mm sealing cuff can be purchased for 175 rubles, a two-lobe reinforced product with d 50 mm - for 5 rubles. A three-petal adapter with dimensions 25 * 50.32 * 50, 40 * 50, 50 * 73, 110 * 123 will cost from 9 to 51 rubles.

Cuff fire REHAU RAUPIANO compact 75 Germany made of polypropylene costs 3457 rubles.

And pipes for plumbing fixtures use sealing rings. Using sealing rubber rings (cuffs), you can reliably seal water pipes, sewerage systems.

For the manufacture of a sealing cuff for sewers, an elastic material is used, which is rubber.

In order for the rubber sealing cuff for sewerage to fulfill its intended purpose 100%, she must be:

  • durable;
  • able to function in conditions with sharp temperature changes;
  • elastic;
  • elastic.

In addition, it must function effectively over a long period of operation.

This is how the rubber cuff was created, the dimensions of which depend on the inner and outer diameter of the pipes, since rubber has such qualities.

Similar properties have other materials, which also include rubber.

Therefore, you can also find cuffs from:

  • paronitis;
  • reinforced or conventional rubber;
  • rubber
  • silicone.

Sealing devices from such mixtures are a little harsh, which causes some inconvenience when mounting pipeline systems.

Sometimes it is better to use not a rubber cuff as a toilet drain adapter, but its polyethylene counterpart. The fact is that this material is the best in terms of tightness and wear resistance.

2. Types of seals

There are 2 types of seals for sewer pipes:

  • sealing;
  • transitional.

The first option - ideally seals sections of sewer systems assembled from pipes of the same internal diameters.

They, in turn, are divided into:

  • internal;
  • outdoor.

Products differ only in the way they are mounted:

  • internal sealing gums can easily be placed in special sockets of the bell, which are also called docking extensions;
  • sealing rubber parts of the outer type are put on the docking pipe, sometimes with a clamp.

Adapter sleeves are required for joining plastic risers of different diameters or for switching from one material to another: for example, 50 or 110 mm.

In such cases, cuffs 40x20, 50x20, 50x32 are used more often than others. With the help of such rubber bands, it is possible to qualitatively dock drain hoses, ball valves of household appliances, appliances, devices (for example, a washing machine or dishwasher, showers with bathtubs, etc.).

Upon purchase, the kit includes an internal rubber seal, the price of which is included in the total price. This kind of seals are a truncated cone, the wide end of which is inserted into the plastic. The tapered end is equipped with a hole, the diameter of which corresponds to the diameter of the drain corrugated pipe from household appliances or other household devices.

Rubber cone seal

The cast iron riser fits well with plastic using a 124x110 cuff.

Any construction goods: pipes, fittings, appliances, devices for heating, can always be purchased at a budget price in the Leroy Merlin construction hypermarket network.

3. Pros and cons of cuffs

The sealing rubber cuff has a number of advantages.

It is characterized by:

  • reliability, which eliminates the possibility of leakage of water from the sewer line, since plastic can be perfectly fixed in a cast-iron pipe;
  • the ability to withstand sudden pressure drops ranging from 50 to 150 kPa;
  • breadth of the range. Since hydraulic seals come in different diameters, they can also be used to articulate risers of different diameters;
  • budget. The price of seals is so low that it is completely affordable for an ordinary citizen.

The negative sides include the fact that in order to mount the cuff in the right place it is necessary:

  • the presence of sockets at the ends of cast-iron pipes;
  • bring the inner surface to an almost perfectly even and smooth.

The sealing cuff is necessary when connecting the siphon to the sewer system. It must be remembered that you should first start collecting the siphon itself, and only after that - connecting the device to the line.

4. About bellows fittings for mixers

Flexible hose to the mixers has different options. One of the most popular is the bellows type. It has a number of advantages in comparison with other similar devices.

4.1. Advantages

Among the many positive characteristics, we can distinguish the following:

  • made of high quality stainless steel;
  • reliably protected from water hammer;
  • high-quality operation is possible for a long time;
  • resistant to possible sharp temperature fluctuations, can fully function at temperatures up to 230-250⁰C;
  • hygienically clean, safe for health, device;
  • does not burn.

4.2. disadvantages

There are several negative points associated with the use of bellows liner:

  • the appearance of hum, noise, vibration processes of corrugated tubes;
  • when several consumers are connected at the same time, an increase in vibration is observed.

Interestingly, the larger the diameter of the eyeliner, the smaller the rumble becomes. Excessive noise disappears with plastic sleeves.

The option of an eyeliner with non-toxic rubber in a braid is also quite popular.

If there is a clogged sewer line, then the inhabitants of the lower floors suffer from polluted waters that pour out through the toilet or bath. You can solve this problem quite simply: install a check valve. This device can pass wastewater in only one direction and eliminates the possibility of movement of the medium in the opposite direction. The principle of its operation is the same as a similar brass device, which is used in drinking water mains.

5. How to install the cuff correctly

The easiest way is to dock with a plastic riser. This is due to the specifics of such a joint: it is quite easy to insert an elastic band into the socket, after which the tip of the flexible pipes is placed in the hole.

Connecting a plastic pipe to a cast iron

A more complicated option is to connect a plastic riser with a cast iron one. This is due to the fact that for a high-quality joint, it is necessary, in practice, to perfectly clean the cast-iron socket from old sealant residues and other possible contaminants.

It is not particularly difficult to join the sewer section of pipes with the presence of internal sealing cuffs.

The uncut type pipe lug easily and simply penetrates into the flared area, where the seal must first be placed correctly. When the section of the highway is cut off, then at its end it is necessary to make an edge under the cone, after which the elastic band will easily take its place. Plain water can be used as a lubricant.

Risers with a diameter of 110 mm (it is best to buy manufactured by Rossiya) are more difficult to connect, even if the docking point is moistened with water. Therefore, to facilitate the installation of the connecting cuff, it must be lubricated with automotive oil, other improvised lubricants that will facilitate the installation process.

Although, it is not necessary to abuse oils, since their excessive amount can adversely affect the life of the gum in the direction of its reduction.

Differential pressure regulator valves can be installed similarly.

Since our building stores have a sufficient number of connecting transition cuffs for metal, polypropylene, plastic, it is not particularly difficult to hermetically assemble the pipeline. You just need to correctly determine the inner diameters. After that, docking cast iron with plastic, plastic with plastic or other docking will not be a problem.
