I remember how once my grandmother and I were on business in the center, and suddenly it began to snow, and the snow was black. And a woman passing by, in a voice breaking into a squeal, wailed: “Lord, the end of the world has come!”

I remember how my grandmother, angry, firmly grabbing my hand, said: “No one knows the day or the hour. And even if an angel from heaven begins to announce the end of the world, let him be anathema.” Now I understand that these were words from the Gospel. We quickly returned home. On that day, I learned the 90th psalm “Alive in the help of the Most High ...” Maybe from malnutrition, my memory was bad in childhood, even the multiplication table was difficult for me, but I remembered the prayer quickly. Grandmother made Sonya and I repeat it until we learned it. Since then, we have been praying every evening. We went for cabbage leaves almost all autumn, but I remember how one day a neighbor said that Guderian came very close, he was in the Sokol metro area, right by our cabbage fields. My grandmother passed away in my sleep in 1956, when I had already graduated from the institute. Of the five grandmother's sons, only Nikanor returned from the war.

This psalm was written by the prophet David, according to researchers, on the occasion of deliverance from a three-day pestilence. The Jews did not have it inscribed. And the words, evil will not come to you in the form of an answer, since this is the answer to them *) And that temptation does not approach the one who has God as his refuge, even the devil proves this, crying out to God about Job: didn’t you protect the external state his? (Job 1:10). However, when God permits, evil can approach such a person, that is, disasters, dangers and temptations.

14. For I have trusted in Me and I will deliver. Inasmuch as the prophet made great and incredible promises to a man who has his refuge in God, that is, that he would trample on the cruelest and most poisonous beasts; therefore now, according to Athanasius, he presents God as assuring of the above and teaching what is the reward and fruit of trusting in God. He says: Because this man has trusted in Me, therefore I will deliver him from all danger.
I will cover and, as if I knew My name. Note, reader, why God said: because he knew my name; this is because no one can know the nature of God. And the name of God is known not to the one who knows in general who God is, but to the one who behaves in relation to God worthy of God, that is, how one should behave in relation to such a great and terrible God, otherwise, as a slave and obedient the divine commandments of his Master *).

Theodoret adds this also: and all who trust in God will receive various blessings, as we see from the ancient narratives, and as evidenced by what is visible now (the following is written in another book of Theodoret's writings); for the souls of the elect are in the hand of the Lord. Their bodies, lying in the tombs, through the divine signs that are now coming from them, reveal a glorious salvation. The 90th psalm does not have any separate title, but in the translation of the Septuagint (III-II centuries BC - a collection of translations of sacred texts into Greek) it has an inscription - "David's Laudatory Song".

This text has long been endowed with protective, protective qualities and is used as a prayer in dangerous situations. Moreover, the text of the 90th psalm is often placed on everyday objects to give them the properties of a protective talisman.

There is, of course, an element of arrogance here. Well, so we carefully, quietly ...

Text of Psalm 90

Interpretation

Compare the first lines. Obviously, the modern version as a whole conveys the general meaning of the stanza. However, in the modern version there is no important keyword - "help". In addition, in the old version, the more holistic word “Vyshnij” is used, and not “Most High” (superlative degree), which also seems to be important.

The second stanza in the modern version looks very similar to the old version, but it sounds completely different. Some melody is missing. Read both options, and you will immediately understand what the matter is.
The third stanza in the modern version is almost completely distorted. “Yako Toy will deliver me from the net of the hunter, and from the word of the rebellious.” It refers to protection from deception in a broad sense, including verbal deceit, outright lying, and mental attack.
For some reason, a “fatal ulcer” was added to the modern version, which is not discussed at all in the Old Church Slavonic version, and not in a single stanza.
Protection against deception in a broad sense in the new version is reduced to a "net of a catcher", i.e. here is an attempt at a completely inappropriate concretization.

In the fourth stanza of the old version, it is said that the Most High will cover the reader with his shoulders (splash) and take him under his wing. Not literally, of course. It is about protection, but in a somewhat allegorical sense. In the modern version, some incomprehensible "feathers" appear. Apparently, the logic of the translator from "ancient to modern" was extremely simple - since there are wings, then why not have feathers?

Phrase meaning

“His truth will be a weapon” - the meaning is that the power of the Most High will manifest itself as a real weapon to protect the reader. According to some data, in the Jewish version of the psalm, a specific weapon is also called - a sword and chain mail (armor). The sword is an active defense weapon. But the shield indicated in the modern version, this, you see, is not at all the same as the sword. It is not clear why the shield was mentioned at all, if it is not discussed at all either in the Church Slavonic version or (apparently) in the Jewish one.

Fifth stanza - "Do not be afraid of the fear of the night, from the arrow flying into the days." Fear of the night - most likely, it is an attack that is meant, and not just fear or “horrors in the night”, as in the modern version. If we consider the stanza as a whole, it turns out that the reader of the psalm is promised protection from the attack of a secret and overt. It seems that "arrows flying in the days" are not at all the same as "arrows flying in the daytime". The arrow can fly precisely in days, in some days, perhaps in the future.

In this regard, Anton Grigoriev's blog seemed interesting, where we read:

It seems that the passage “an arrow flying in the days” can mean, among other things, an unfortunate set of circumstances, a danger to life.

The sixth stanza is the most mysterious, and its modern version does not at all correspond to the semantic meaning of the Church Slavonic text.
Some kind of ulcer again got into the modern version, although it is said: "from a thing in the darkness of the transient." It can be assumed that some dangerous, “dark” objects are meant.
Maybe pads? "Sryashcha" is an unpleasant meeting, a sudden misfortune, misfortune, attack, blow. The word may also be related to divinatory witchcraft.

The seventh stanza contains some numerical enumerations, which is very typical for the rules of conspiracy. “A thousand will fall from your country, and darkness at your right hand, but it will not come close to you” - i.e. on one side (the country of the left) a thousand will fall, and on the right ten thousand.
"Right" means - on the right, on the right hand. In the modern version, it was considered appropriate to replace the word "darkness" with "ten thousand", but for some reason they left the "right hand". The logic doesn't follow at all. In ancient times, a thousand and darkness were big numbers.
To consider something that exceeds the concept of darkness did not make sense. Those. the meaning of the stanza is the prohibition (which is again typical of conspiracy rules) to approach the reader of the psalm of any enemies in any quantity and from any side.

The eighth stanza contains a fixation - "Look at both your eyes, and you will see the retribution of sinners." Obache is "however" or "however". In the modern interpretation, it is replaced by "only". How can you interpret

In the tenth stanza, there is again a special prohibition for evil and injury: "Evil will not come to you, and the wound will not come near your body."

The stanza is clear and does not need any adaptation at all. Nevertheless, this stanza is also being adjusted to a modern tune, again including some notorious ulcer in it and for some reason replacing “telesi” (organism, body) with a dwelling. At the same time, the prohibition of injury (and in a broader sense - an accident, injury) falls out of the text completely.

The promise of an angel's help

The eleventh stanza contains a fastening, as well as a promise of help from the Angels: "as by His Angel a commandment about you, keep you in all your ways." And it is also completely understandable to modern man.

The thirteenth stanza lists specific entities that cannot harm the reader: “step on the asp and the basilisk, and cross the lion and the serpent.” Asp is a horned poisonous snake.
