How to make a garden bench with your own hands. Do-it-yourself easy-to-make benches made of wood Timber and board: the simplest forms

Garden furniture can become not only an interior decoration, but also a great place to relax. A do-it-yourself shop is a source of pride and a touch of the future furniture set.

Making this accessory is not as difficult as it seems. It is important from the very beginning to decide on the material and the appropriate design.

About materials

Plastic parts

Such a bench will have a lot of advantages.

  • Affordable price range.
  • Easy care.
  • Mobility.

Pleased with a large selection of color options.

Plastic furniture has its drawbacks.

  1. Cheap look. Unlike wood.
  2. The ability to fade in the sun;
  3. The surface deforms quickly.

What about the tree?

Ideal for making furniture. Amenable to any type of processing, has a noble appearance, does not require complex work during installation. Any type of wood is allowed. The main requirement is the absence of defects, high-quality drying.

stone products

Material of natural origin with an attractive appearance. Will fit into the interior with any design. The composition will look stylish and unusual, elegant. Natural stone has many advantages, but it is not without its drawbacks. It's easy to do this too.

  • It is not always safe to sit on such benches, including for health. The tree has no such disadvantages.
  • It is recommended to purchase pillows and warm blankets in the kit.
  • Such benches cannot be moved from place to place, only stationary installation is possible.

What about metal?

An excellent decoration in any garden will be garden benches, for the manufacture of which the forging method, cold or hot, was used.

These are stylish and beautiful designs, for which it is better to purchase decorative ornaments. Metal will be a good addition to glass or wood. Make it simple.

Shop Requirements

  1. Convenience. The bench should be ergonomic, this is especially important for relaxation. Comfort and convenience play a role. A good option is the presence of a back in the product.
  2. It is important that the bench can withstand even serious loads. Accordingly, the quality of fittings and furniture should be on top.
  3. The material must withstand any changes in weather conditions without deformation, because it is created for outdoor installation.

Design and features

1500 millimeters - this length for the back and seat of the bench is enough to comfortably seat three people. Other dimensions matter too. The seat width reaches 400 mm, the back angle is 18-20 degrees. The back height is 900 millimeters, the seats are 450.

From the materials we need to take:

  • Lacquer, primer;
  • Paper with the effect of sandpaper for wood;
  • Screwdriver;
  • Electric planer for wood. They will process chamfers, grind the surface of the boards.
  • We will cut the boards using an electric jigsaw.
  • Required number of screws.
  • We will strengthen the design of the bench with our own hands with self-tapping screws with dimensions of 40 by 40 mm.
  • For the front legs of the bench we make blanks. Thickness - 35-40 millimeters, size - 360 by 150.
  • Holders for the backrest and bench legs also require separate blanks. The thickness is the same 35-40 millimeters, but the size is 900 by 150.
  • Do not make a product with your own hands without wooden boards. The thickness is the same, and the dimensions are 1500 by 150 mm.

Making a wooden structure

  • You can immediately purchase boards for the bench that have the right size. If there is no suitable option, we use a jigsaw to cut the boards with our own hands. A miter saw will also become an indispensable tool. This can be done quickly.
  • The wood must be carefully processed after the desired length has been achieved. Grinding requires blanks for the seat, backrest. With an electric planer, it is necessary to process the ends of the boards. The best option is rounded shapes.
  • We set the correct angle of inclination with our own hands to the long rear legs of the bench. They also play the role of the frame of the whole structure. We apply markings on two wooden blanks with a length of 900 millimeters. It's not that hard to do everything.
  • 400 millimeters - the height of the bench, we mark it first with our own hands. Additional processing on this section of the material is not needed. We make a cut of 20 degrees along the entire length of the product, starting from the segment. This forms the angle of inclination for the back. The angle of inclination and the height on the two legs at the back should be the same.
  • The legs of the bench are assembled first. 280 mm - the distance between the elements in front and behind. A bar is cut across the entire width of the bench, which connects the legs. Its size is 500 mm. It is good if the strapping is top and bottom.
  • The sidewalls of the bench are interconnected with their own hands after the assembly is completed. To connect, we use boards on which we will have to sit. They are screwed to the upper strapping bars using self-tapping screws. The gaps between the wooden blanks should have different sizes. They help to remove moisture, organize circulation.
  • Let's move on to strengthening the bench with our own hands. Without this action, the product will not be durable and stable. We use the beams in order to make the lower strapping along the legs. We fasten two blanks with a length of 1500 mm to the front and rear elements. There may be one crossbar if there is not enough lumber.
  • We mount the back in the bench with our own hands. This is one of the last steps. It is recommended to keep a distance of 380 millimeters from the seat for the second board, 200 millimeters from the seat for the first.
  • All that was left was the finishing coat of the shop. Varnish and deep impregnation will always help to protect yourself from external influences as much as possible. You can forget about pests, mold and moisture.

How to work with metal?

Personal plots are decorated not only with furniture made of wood. Metal can also become an indispensable assistant in creating comfortable places for relaxation. It is not necessary to own the hot forging technique for this.

Cold forging is also quite suitable for this. In a single structure, we simply weld the frame from metal blanks. Decor elements will ennoble the appearance.

detailed instructions

  • We start with the development of the dimensions and dimensions of the bench. The standard back height is 800-900 mm. Width - 400-500 mm. Length 1500 mm. The easiest work is with angular shapes. It is recommended to start with simpler models.
  • We make a frame for the seat. We cut the metal pipe. We need the following sizes: 2 fragments of 400 mm and 2 of 1500 mm. We weld the parts so that they acquire a rectangular shape. It is permissible to weld 2 additional stiffeners to make the structure more durable.
  • Next we need legs. We cut the metal pipe into 4 parts, 460 mm each. The blanks are then connected to the corners of the bench. Additional stiffeners between the front and rear legs will not be superfluous.
  • Making the back. Between ourselves, we weld one workpiece 1500 mm long into another, 440 mm long. We then weld the structure to the part of the bench that is already ready. 15-20 degrees - the optimal angle of inclination for the back. Then the rest will be comfortable.
  • The backrest can also be strengthened with stiffening ribs.
  • At the final stage, all seams are cleaned. The frame is primed.

Beam and board: the simplest forms

There are a large number of options for execution and designs. There are also the simplest ones, some prefer woodcarving. They become true works of art.

A wooden bench without a back is the simplest solution. It is allowed to use a board up to 75 mm thick. Each element consists of two parts.

We assemble a seat from two boards, the ends are bevelled. It is better to provide a gap between the elements if you plan to place the structure in an open area where there is no heating. The gaps compensate for the swelling of the wood, allow you to get rid of moisture in large quantities.

Each leg consists of two glued elements. A pin or dowel will make the connection more reliable. Two short beams for emphasis must be fixed on each of the legs. This will secure the seat itself. Self-tapping screws and glue, grooves are indispensable helpers for fixing. Beams and legs are attached to each board in the last stages of work.

Radius cutouts and curly elements complicate the work a little, but if desired, this task can also be solved without problems. For example, choose the shape of a rectangle.

Drawings are not dogmas, they can be changed at your discretion.

The beam is at the bottom if the bench is not very long. The beam itself becomes a stiffener in such a situation. Shkant involves the use of both closed and open mounting, the latter option is very unusual. The form of the material can be any. It is even allowed to use the options with which wooden houses are built.

In order for the garden plot to be comfortable enough, it should be properly equipped. An important component are garden benches. They can be made independently in different ways and from various materials.

Bench made of concrete slabs and boards with a back

Looking at the drawings of the bench, you can find out the features of its device. You can make such a design with your own hands relatively easily, quickly and without high financial costs.

Making a bench with a backrest with your own hands in a step-by-step instruction is described in great detail.

Assembly: the initial stage

After the preparatory work, the time for wood processing is coming. In order for a do-it-yourself bench with a back to serve for a long time and decorate the site, it is necessary to pre-process the materials.

wood cover antiseptic formulations and let dry. After that, you can start collecting backs.

On one of the two-meter boards, fifty centimeters are measured from the edges. At this level, the edges of the white will be located.tons of slabs. From this mark another fifteen centimeters are measured to the center of the board. Here the first boards will be attached. From the resulting marks we measure seventeen and a half centimeters - the gap between the boards of the back. Next, we measure fifteen centimeters for two more boards. Between them there should be a gap of five centimeters. All this can be seen in the drawing.

Wood glue is applied to sections of fifteen centimeters. Boards are applied to them, the length of which is sixty-five centimeters. Additionally, they are fixed with self-tapping screws.

From above, between the boards of the back, pieces of seventeen and a half centimeters are glued. In order for the parts to stick together well, they are clamped and held until the glue sets. After gluing is completed, the back is covered with an antiseptic.

All wooden parts can be coated varnish. This will give them additional stability and attractiveness.

Assembly of the main part

It is better to collect the main part of the bench from two sides. Concrete slabs are placed between the boards, and M16 threaded rods fifty-five centimeters long are inserted into the drilled holes. They will need four pieces.

The rods are fastened with nuts and washers M16. They are twisted at the same time from different sides to make the bench even.

A simple bench with your own hands

You can make benches for giving with your own hands quickly enough if you follow the instructions. Consider four options for such garden structures.

On the drawings benches detail all its features. Making such a bench with your own hands is quite simple. The only difficult element is the concave seat.

The number of parts and their dimensions are indicated in the table.

The manufacture of benches with their own hands from wood begins with blanks the necessary details. Boards and timber are sawn into pieces of the desired length.

The manufacture of seat supports will be somewhat more difficult. You will need to markup on the blanks. Two points are marked along the edges at a distance of seven and a half centimeters from the bottom side, and in the center a point at a distance of four and a half centimeters. They are connected using a flexible plastic ruler and cut out jigsaw. Sections are treated with sandpaper.

Seat supports are attached to the two upper tsargs. One on each end and one in the middle. Next, the supports are screwed, spaced from the extreme ones by the width of the legs. All connections are made with self-tapping screws.

Boards are attached to the resulting base seats. It is desirable to deepen the hats of self-tapping screws.

Then attach legs. They are attached to the seat supports. The lower tsargs help to fix the legs.

The finished product is covered antiseptic and varnish.

Simple bench #2

To make such a garden bench with your own hands, you will need concrete flower girls and boards. Flower girls are required to create the base of the bench. Use two with a rectangular base and two cubic ones.

In order for the base to be stable, the flower girls must be glued or connected from the inside with staples fixed with self-tapping screws. A layer of drainage and soil is poured into the tank. This increases their stability.

The seat for the bench is made of boards. To do this, they are cut into segments of the desired length. These blanks are laid so that they have a distance of half a centimeter. Then they are connected using cross bars. Planks are placed in three places: along the edges and in the middle. Corners are attached to the planks. With their help, the seat will be fixed on the flower girls.

Do-it-yourself bench with a back

Prepare the details of the bench shown in the figure. They are processed antiseptics before connecting.

Then the supports are assembled from the parts. Pre-round the corners and chamfer. First, parts A and B are connected with a bolt, and then B, C and D are also connected using a bolt.

The inclination of the backrest is determined by part D, after which it is connected to part A. Similarly, but in mirror image, another support is made.

After that, the back and seat are assembled. To do this, the supports are placed so that there is a distance of twenty centimeters between them. First, the front and rear bars are screwed to the supports, then all the others, and finally the stops are screwed.

At the last stage, the back of this bench is screwed.

Bench #4Another option for a simple do-it-yourself bench. Its length is one hundred and twenty centimeters. The height from the ground to the seat is fifty centimeters, the height of the back is also fifty centimeters.

The base is made from boards, whose thickness is five centimeters, and the width is from ten to twelve. One of the legs continues and is the backrest support. The supports are connected according to the “half-tree” method and fastened with bolts.

The basis for the seat is a bar fixed on self-tapping screws. The short legs on the back of the bench are colleted together to increase stability. The seat and back are sheathed with boards with a smaller thickness. The surface is painted or varnished.

A simple bench with a back for a summer cottage

The dimensions of the structure and wooden parts can be seen on drawings benches. If we consider how to make a bench with our own hands, then this option will be the most optimal in terms of the simplicity of the process and the result obtained.

Materials are best purchased already cut to size. If there is no such option, then you need to cut them yourself.

The resulting blanks polished. The ends of the boards are treated with an electric planer.

The rear legs of this simple do-it-yourself bench are also a support for the back. To create the desired level of inclination, the blanks are marked.

At a height of forty centimeters mark the place of attachment seats. Above the board is cut at an angle of twenty degrees. The cuts on the two blanks should be the same.

Gather first legs benches: the front ones are connected to the back ones with a beam. It is better to do this from above and below.

When the side parts are assembled, they can be connected to each other with seat boards. Screw the boards with self-tapping screws, leaving distances of one or two centimeters.

To strengthen the structure and increase its stability, make the lower strapping bar on the legs. Two boards are attached to the back.

Finish the work with a finish coated which will protect the product from moisture and adverse conditions.

Do-it-yourself pallet bench

Make a bench with your own hands pallets It's easy if you use your imagination. To do this, you need three or four of these wooden structures. Some will need to be cut to get additional details. The simplest do-it-yourself pallet bench design is when two pallets are attached perpendicular to each other, creating a back and seat.

So that the design does not turn out to be too cumbersome, it is better to cut the pallets to the desired dimensions. Fasten the elements with self-tapping screws. Add side details that enhance strength and make legs. All this can be seen in the photo.

Since the material of the pallets is raw, rough, it will need to be preliminarily grind. This will allow you to do without splinters.

The manufacture of benches with their own hands from pallets is being completed with varnish or paint.

Bench puzzle

You can make such a bench with your own hands if you have a wide board and shovels for shovels. Figured seats are cut out of the board in the form of puzzle pieces. Legs from cuttings for shovels are attached to them. Separate stools are obtained, which are quickly assembled into one long bench. All manufacturing steps are detailed in step-by-step photos.

Benches from unnecessary chairs: two do-it-yourself options

First option

To create such a bench for a summer house with your own hands, you will need four old chair.

From the first two chairs filmed parts on the front of the seat.

The rest sawed off the front legs are slightly lower than the seat structure.

From the resulting details you need take off old varnish or paint. To do this, a special agent is applied to the parts that dissolves paint and varnish coatings. Then the softened layer can be removed with a spatula.

The racks should drill dowel holes. Holes are required on the front and end sides.

The dowels are smeared with glue and inserted into the drilled holes.

When the dowels are glued, you can collect base benches. To make the design durable, the parts are fastened with self-tapping screws. Construction surface sanded.

For seats benches choose a board that is suitable in size, saw off the excess.

If several narrower boards are used, then they are glued together with wood glue. For a tight connection, they are clamped with clamps and waiting for the glue to dry.

The finished seat is also glued to the base with wood glue. Heavy objects are placed on the board and clamped together with the base with clamps.

When the glue dries, cover the seat with masking tape and stain other structural elements with wood paint.

The adhesive tape is removed and the seat is processed wood stain. In conclusion, the entire bench is varnished.

Second option

To make a second garden bench with your own hands from old furniture, you will need two chairs. It is better if the back and hind legs are not separated.

Two identical chairs clean up all parts of the structure except for the rear legs with a back.

take bars 5 cm wide and 3 cm thick. Two pieces are cut off, equal in length to the width of the chairs, and two pieces of the same length as the finished bench will be. From these four parts, a rectangle is assembled. It is fixed to the backs of the chairs with self-tapping screws.

Another frame is assembled in the same way. Several cross bars are attached to it. This design is attached under the seat, makes the bench more reliable and plays the role of a shelf.

If the chairs are old coating then remove it with sandpaper. After that, the surface is puttied with a special compound or coated with a primer. When the layer dries, it must be sanded with fine-grained sandpaper. At the end, the structure is covered with paint.

Do-it-yourself seat for a garden bench is made from Chipboard or plywood. A rectangle is cut out of the selected material, which is larger than the base by half a centimeter on each side. Then cut out a piece foam rubber with the same dimensions. A rectangle is cut out of the upholstery fabric. It should be larger than the seat by five centimeters on each side.

Foam rubber is laid on a sheet of plywood, it is covered with a cloth on top. The fabric is fastened from the inside with furniture stapler.

The seat is attached to the base with a piano loop.

Bench-swing

To make such a bench for giving with your own hands, you should prepare the necessary materials. Start manufacturing by creating basics designs. The seat bars are attached to the back bars at a selected angle.

Along the seat install additional ribs providing rigidity.

Attached to the seat planks, drilling holes in the base bars for fastening. The same goes for the back.

Armrests are installed on both sides of the seat. They can be bolted on.

The resulting bench cover wood preservatives and varnishes. It is very important to paint over everything as carefully as possible.

The bottom of the bench is reinforced with metal profile. Chains are attached to the profile, on which the swing bench will be suspended. Be sure to check the reliability of the beams on which the bench will be suspended.

log bench

To make such a bench with your own hands from wood, you will need chainsaw. A thick log one meter long is taken as the main material.

Log mark out, to get two slightly unequal parts. The back will be made from the smaller one, and the seat from the larger one.

Chainsaw log sawed along the mark. The resulting irregularities are immediately cut off with the same saw.

The cut triangular piece is cut into pieces and inserted into the holes in the seat. The back is fixed on top. The bench is almost ready. It remains only to give it a more decorative look.

Can the seat be placed on legs. To do this, recesses are made in the lower part for installing a pair of logs as legs.

Bench-transformer

Design features of the transformer can be seen in the drawings of the bench. A do-it-yourself transformer bench is made from planed boards, which is cut to the named sizes.

In sliced lumber details holes for fasteners are drilled.

At the tabletop, boards located on the edge can be made wavy.

In material intended for countertops, drill holes with a diameter of twenty-two millimeters and a depth of three centimeters. Cuttings of the same diameter will be inserted into them.

The edges of parts and edges are processed and rounded.

The assembly of all elements is carried out with screws and screws. Screws are needed with dimensions 6x70 and 6x90, screws - 8x80.

Wooden parts stain stain.

The structural parts that will move are connected by hinges.

Between the boards of the tabletop place parts of a round cutting.

Set the stop for backs.

A do-it-yourself transformer bench is covered varnish.

rocking bench

Making an original bench with a backrest with your own hands is not difficult if you have the tools and materials. First you need to consider the drawings of the bench, which contain a small amount of detail.

The side parts according to the pattern are transferred to euro plywood three centimeters thick. They are cut with a jigsaw and the ends are processed with a grinder.

To fix the connecting strips, markings are made. Then holes are drilled. After assembling the frame, the rails are fixed with self-tapping screws. The attachment points are spatulated, and the product is completely varnished.

Bench around a tree

The simplest version of such a bench - hexagonal. The size depends on the size of the tree. Measurements are made at the height of the seat. To the result obtained, another margin of fifteen to twenty centimeters is added. If you divide the result by 1.75, you get the length of the inside.

For cutting boards ten centimeters wide are laid in four rows at intervals of one centimeter.

The cut point is marked immediately for all rows with an angle of thirty degrees. So cut out six sets of blanks.

Legs are used with a height of sixty to seventy centimeters. They are connected by crossbars by drilling holes and using bolts with nuts.

The seat is installed so that the joints are located in the center of the ribs of the legs. Screw the outer pieces first, then the inner ones. In this way, the entire hexagonal structure is assembled around the tree.

At the end, they make a back and mount an apron. The result is a circular bench with a do-it-yourself backrest.

The finished product is processed oil impregnation.

Bench made of curved branches

A bench made of curved branches will look original. For you will need branches for the front, two legs, a horizontal top and a pair of transverse branches.

Sawing branches so that they match each other as accurately as possible. Then they are connected with metal corners.

Similarly, the back is made and connected to the front.

The finished product is placed on a flat area and the seat is assembled.

Bench options

  • log bench which blends in well with the natural environment. It consists of half a log used for the seat, and two short round logs that are legs.
  • Beautiful wooden bench with a back and armrests, reminiscent of a sofa. Curved and carved elements make it more attractive, while left knots and bumps give the design a natural look.
  • Bench made of wood and metal. The base of the structure is metal. The wooden parts of the seat and back are fixed to it. Due to the small thickness of the metal parts, it looks light.
  • A bench of a simple, classical form. It is made of wooden, rather wide boards. This width allows you to comfortably sit on the bench. Armrests make the design more complete.
  • original bench made of wood with curly details. This option is well suited for a site with a natural rural design. Carved legs and armrests, figured back - all this gives the product originality.
  • Bench with an interesting back. The curved parts gradually deviate back, creating a unique design. The seat is slightly curved but has a more traditional look.
  • Wood complex- a table with two benches. The design looks traditional due to the material used. The original solution is to fasten all the components into a single structure.
  • The bench is made from solid wood. A single piece is cut out of it, combining the back and seat. The legs are attached to the bottom. The log is required quite large.
  • Bench with storage box for toys. Outwardly, it looks like an ordinary wooden bench-sofa, but under the seat it has a box in which you can put various things.
  • Comfortable wooden bench with a simple shape. The base is made in the form of a rectangular box. The back is also simple with a straight shape. The seat is padded with soft cushions for added comfort.
  • A wooden bench placed around a tree. It is made as if it consists of four benches, each of which has one armrest. The composition looks attractive and comfortable.
  • Bench of a simple form from wide boards. It looks solid, but its size is somewhat hidden by the gaps between the boards and the light blue color in which it is painted.

Items of garden furniture are necessary to equip a place to relax at your summer cottage at your discretion. Photos of benches in the garden look attractive. Any master can make such furniture himself.

First you need to decide on the choice of material for the future product and choose the right design solution.

Work materials

Garden bench can be made from various materials. Each of them has its own advantages.

Plastic bench

This piece of furniture has many advantages. Plastic products are affordable, they do not require special care, they are easy to disassemble and assemble. Today, plastic is presented in rich colors.

However, there are also disadvantages. A plastic item looks cheaper than a wooden item. Under the influence of direct sunlight, it quickly fades, and its surface may be deformed.

Wood for garden furniture

To make original benches for summer cottages, craftsmen often use wood. Wood is easy to process, the material looks noble, and installation does not take much time.

The main requirements are the absence of defects and good drying.

stone products

The naturalness of the material is its undeniable advantage; it attracts with its natural beauty. In finished products, it looks luxurious and stylish.

Natural stone items are easy to make with your own hands. However, the material has not only advantages, but also disadvantages:

  • It is unhealthy to sit on a cold stone.
  • The bench is installed exclusively permanently.

What about metal?

Metal benches are a great decoration for a recreation area. The cold forging method, like the hot forging method, allows you to create beautiful designs.

In addition, metal is perfectly combined with glass or wood.

What should be the ideal shop?

Among all the requirements, the main ones can be distinguished:

  • Comfort. The bench needs to be ergonomic. A bench with a back is a good option.
  • The product must be capable of withstanding heavy loads. The master needs to choose only high-quality materials and accessories.

Bench design features

A summer resident who wants to ennoble the landscape around the house should know how to make a bench with his own hands. You must first determine the dimensions.

Dimensions - 1.5 mX0.4 m, height - 0.45 m (seat) and 900 m (back). The back is made at an angle of 18 or 20 degrees. It is important to correctly execute the drawings of the bench, then the work will not argue.

The master will need to prepare the following:

  • Primer, varnish;
  • Special sandpaper for wood;
  • Screwdriver;
  • Electroplaner;
  • Electric jigsaw;
  • Self-tapping screws 40X40;
  • Blanks for front and rear legs, as well as for backrest holders;
  • Wooden boards with dimensions 1500X150 and thickness from 35 mm to 40 mm.

Making a wooden structure with your own hands

It's good when you can find boards with the right dimensions on the market.

When there was no suitable option on the construction market, the master will have to arm himself with a jigsaw in order to cut the material himself. A miter saw will help speed up the process.

Note!

Finished blanks must be processed. The surface of the boards for the backrest with the seat needs to be sanded. The ends are processed using an electric planer, the best option is to make them with a rounded shape.

The next step is to give the required angle of inclination, in this case we are talking about the rear legs of the bench. These elements serve as a framework. Marking is applied to the prepared parts.

We measure the height - 0.4 m. It is necessary to make a cut equal to 20 degrees to form the angle of inclination. Between the legs of the bench in front and behind the distance should be 0.28 m. A beam with a size of 0.5 m connects the legs. It is better when the strapping is performed not only from above, but also from below.

The sidewalls are connected as soon as the assembly of the main parts is completed. The boards are fastened with self-tapping screws to the strapping bars that are on top. Between the blanks leave gaps to remove moisture.

When mounting the backrest, the board that comes first is attached at a distance of 0.2 m from the seat, and the second - 0.38 m.

Note!

You can proceed to the final coating of the product. For this, impregnation with varnish for outdoor use is used. Such means will help to provide reliable protection against any harmful actions from the outside.

How to create a metal structure?

A master can create a comfortable place for a recreation area using the cold forging technique. It is better to start with models that have angular shapes, they are easier to make.

Detailed instructions

We determine the dimensions (length - 1.5 m, height - 0.8 or 0.9 m, width - 0.4 or 0.5 m).

We make blanks for the frame from a cut pipe. It will be necessary to prepare 2 segments with dimensions of 0.4 m and 2 more fragments of 1.5 m each. We connect these parts into a rectangle and weld them. To make the structure more durable, we weld 2 stiffeners.

To make blanks for the legs, we cut the metal pipe into 4 parts, the length of each should be 0.4 m. The blanks are attached to the corners of the bench. To reinforce the legs, stiffening ribs are additionally installed.

Note!

For the manufacture of the back you will need 2 blanks. The length of one should be 1.5 m, and the other 0.44 mm. We weld the blanks for the back together and weld to the seat. We must not forget about the angle of inclination. For the rest to be comfortable, it must be at least 15 or 20 degrees.

The backrest can also be reinforced with stiffeners.

At the last stage, the seams are cleaned. The surface of the frame is coated with a primer.

If you plan to make a product with figured elements, then the implementation of such a task will require more time.

Foreword

The desire to decorate and somehow highlight the garden plot is familiar to all owners. In practice, it can be implemented in different ways: from the installation of garden sculptural compositions to the creation of artificial landscape areas like an alpine hill. But in most cases, dacha owners tend to use more discreet methods and combine aesthetics with practicality. This is most clearly reflected in the appearance of the elements of improvement. There are many options for garden benches on sale, but most summer residents prefer to create them on their own, use their creativity, imagination and ingenuity. The results sometimes turn out to be much more successful than industrial designs, and the pleasure experienced by the master cannot be assessed. To know how and from what a garden bench can be created with your own hands, it is not necessary to storm bookstores.

Requirements that a garden bench must meet

Sustainability is one of the basic parameters of a homemade garden bench

There are many requirements for such a simple element of landscaping a summer cottage. It is necessary to immediately clarify that they are not some kind of documented standard, but rather the operational and aesthetic requirements of the owner for the quality of the product.

  1. A certain degree of comfort, user-friendliness. Outdoor recreation should be a real pleasure, which is largely provided by the design of the bench. A product with good ergonomics, equipped with a backrest that allows you to lean back and relax is the best option, for the creation of which you need to take care of choosing the most convenient design in advance.
  2. Security. It is necessary to ensure proper strength, reliability of the product. There should be no possibility of tipping over, destruction under a seated person. All surfaces that the user may touch must be are carefully processed, burrs or sharp elements are removed, the presence of protruding nails or other parts dangerous to humans should not be allowed.
  3. Resistance to external influences. The bench is located in the open air and takes on all atmospheric manifestations: precipitation, scorching rays of the sun, wind and other loads. Some materials are capable of changing their shape or surface quality (for example, wood), so it is important to periodically inspect them and take measures to eliminate the detected flaws.
  4. Decorative effect, special appearance of the garden bench. Product performance is not the only, exceptional. The opportunity to create a certain element of a fairy tale on the site, a cozy and comfortable island of communication undoubtedly attracts.

Materials for manufacturing: what to choose

The manufacture of a garden bench, as a rule, is made from the most affordable and inexpensive material. The list of suitable materials for each owner is determined by his capabilities and skills, the presence of certain tools and equipment. There are designs of garden benches made of:

  • Wood. One of the most accessible and widespread materials. Allows the creation of structures that have different degrees of processing, finish, shape or size. Almost all users have woodworking skills, but a fairly large number of tools will be needed for manufacturing.
The durability of wood products used outdoors is low. A protective coating or impregnation is required.

Wooden benches will last much longer if you cover them with a special varnish, and provide additional protection options for the legs.

  • Metal. Working with it requires certain skills and tools. The material allows different processing methods, is sold in the form of finished blanks (shaped pipes or rolled products), allows you to create very attractive samples.

In terms of base design, iron is a more comfortable and durable material.

The strength and durability of a metal bench is high, but some care and protection against corrosion is necessary.

  • Stone. The material is specific, the result largely depends on the type of stone and the method of processing.

Such masterpieces are not for everyone.

A bench made of stone may look different, but in any case, it will take effort and time to make.

Benches are not always used for their intended purpose, while the choice is always up to the owner of the summer cottage

At the same time, the strength and durability of the material is comparable to the service life of the house or site itself.

  • Plastic. As a rule, cuttings of water or sewer pipes, other parts or residues from cladding or finishing work are used.

PVC and other types of pipes are easy to assemble curious designs of benches and benches

The material is easily cut, allows welding or other methods of connection, does not rot and is not afraid of moisture. The strength of plastic is lower than that of other materials, but there is elasticity, which allows it to endure mechanical influences of a certain force without destruction.

  • The most common option is when two or more materials are used in the manufacture. Most often, a supporting structure (frame) is made of metal or stone, concrete, brick, etc. Boards are most often used for the seat and back, although there are other types of construction.

What are the criteria for choosing the right model?

A beginner should start with simple models based on improvised materials.

The bench model (type of construction, design) can be implemented in a wide variety of shapes or styles. The choice is driven by necessity, the needs of the owner, or other considerations. The selection criteria are primarily the purpose and dimensions of the product. For some, a small bench is enough to sit down and take a breath. Others prefer to set up a table set with two benches on the sides, suitable for family or friendly gatherings. The final choice must match the wishes of the owner in the following categories:

  • Dimensions.
  • Material.
  • Performance style.
  • Composition (number of items, composition).

Factors influencing the choice of the optimal option can be:

  • Plot size.
  • climatic conditions in the region.
  • Possibilities of the owner both financially and technologically.

It is important to take into account the number of people who can be on the site at the same time, to choose the optimal design and style.

Many solve the issue using improvised materials or elements that require almost no additional steps. Others create real masterpieces, spending a lot of time and effort on them.

Step-by-step instructions, drawings and schemes for assembling garden benches with your own hands

Garden furniture can be designed independently. For those who do not have the time or desire to create a project, there are ready-made drawings and manufacturing instructions. Consider some options that can inspire home craftsmen to create their own product. It is not necessary to follow the instructions from and to, you can only use the idea itself or some points. The main thing is that the information should be useful for site owners and help in making their own, original sample of a garden bench.

from wood

There are many options for the design of garden benches made of wood. The most traditional form is a bench with a back, an approximate drawing of which can be seen in the figure.

The drawing shows a model of a stable simple structure

The dimensions indicated in the diagram are the most common, with the exception of the length, which can be changed at will.

For manufacturing you will need:

  • Edged boards 30–40 mm thick, 140–160 mm wide.
  • Roulette, ruler, square.
  • Hacksaw, electric saw or jigsaw.
  • Electric or manual planer.
  • Electric drill, screwdriver.
  • Hammer, pliers, hacksaw.
  • Screws, nails.
  • Varnish or paint, brush, appropriate thinner.

Procedure:

  1. Cut the boards to the length corresponding to the dimensions indicated on the diagram.
  2. Process them with an electric or manual planer, chamfer.
  3. The backrests have a bevel that forms a slope. Mark the workpiece and cut the corner with a jigsaw or circular saw.

Please note that the length of the screws in this design is gradually reduced

  4. Assemble the frame by attaching the cross bars to the legs and the longitudinal bar at the bottom.

Coat the legs with varnish on all sides, including the one that will stand on the ground

  5. Attach the boards to the back and seat.

The seat can be made narrower and the back straighter

This option can be made for permanent installation, for which the lower part of the legs must be extended by the amount of immersion in the ground. It must be borne in mind that the wood rots quickly, so before immersing it is necessary to apply a layer of hot bitumen or at least wrap the legs with roofing material.

A bench with a back is considered one of the most difficult options. You can create a simpler structure using logs sawn lengthwise.

In this model, some negligence 2 is a sign of style

Smooth (flat) parts form the seat and back (if needed). Having somewhat complicated the design, you can get a set of two benches and a table that looks deliberately rough, but stylish.

In some situations, a folding design is convenient, which can turn from a bench with a back into a set of two benches and a table. Owners of small plots will appreciate this option.

Benches-transformers require a rosary of verified dimensions

The backrest, the lower edge of which rises, becomes a table top, and half of the seat moves to the opposite side and becomes a second bench. There are many options for transformer benches.

Bench-transformer - the peak of carpentry and often beyond the power of a beginner

There are benches set up around tree trunks. They are in the shade, do not occupy a separate space, which is important in small areas. The manufacture of such a design is simple and does not require a lot of time. There may be options designed for sitting with your back to the trunk.

It’s not the most convenient option for conversations, but arranging flowers on it is easy!

There are other designs that form, in addition to the seat, a circular version of the table. In this case, people are placed facing the tree.

Any wooden structure is varnished or impregnated to avoid rapid damage.

Metal or wood-metal

Metal benches have high strength, reliability, elegance.

Metal products are exquisite, but not always comfort

The only drawback is the tendency of the metal to corrode. The best option is to use a profile pipe of rectangular or oval section. The creation of the product is best done by welding - this significantly speeds up the work and gives a high-quality and durable connection.

Tools required for work:

  • Welding machine, set of electrodes.
  • Bulgarian with a cutting wheel.
  • Roulette, ruler.
  • Scriber, chalk or talc.
  • Clamps for temporary fixing of parts.

There can be many design options, and you can add any element at almost any stage of the assembly. The main part of the bench is the seat, which is a kind of lattice mounted on the legs.

The finished product also needs to be covered with paint or other protective material.

Creating a bench only from metal does not give the best result. Even in appearance, such a product looks too hard, cold.

Most often, combined structures are created in which metal is only a supporting frame, legs and back supports. All elements that a person touches are made of wood. Similar designs are found everywhere and are familiar to everyone.

A bench with a curved back looks more sophisticated, but requires a little more craftsmanship.

They are quite simple and reliable, allow, if necessary, to replace failed wooden parts. The main advantage can be considered the absence of specialized wooden elements - only bars of a certain section are required, which are attached to the base with bolts and nuts.

The procedure is as follows:

  1. A working drawing is drawn up indicating all dimensions. If a ready-made project is used, then this item can be skipped.
  2. Parts of the required length are cut from the pipe according to the specification.
  3. The parts are connected to each other by welding.
  4. If the back and seat are wooden, then the corresponding bars are cut and processed.
  5. Bolt holes for the seat and back are drilled on the base.
  6. The base is covered with a layer of protective paint. The most popular option is black bituminous.
  7. While the base dries, it is recommended to varnish or paint wooden parts in parallel.
  8. The bench is assembled and installed in place.

If you have a pipe bender at hand, you can create a very attractive design with graceful curved armrests.

Such models are created using a pipe bender, and they also need to be able to use

It will take a little more time for such a bench than for the usual version with straight lines, and the effect of it will be much higher.

From concrete slabs combined with wood

The design option for a garden bench using concrete slabs as a base is less common than wooden or metal samples. Nevertheless, the owners of such products note their decorative value and durability. To create such structures, it is necessary to have concrete hollow blocks of a certain size. The simplest version of the design is assembled from rectangular slabs like paving or cladding, which are drilled and tightened with threaded studs, placing wooden boards between the slabs. They perform several functions at once - they connect the supports to each other and form a seat.

A concrete and wooden bench is not suitable for every garden design, because it looks somewhat massive

It is advisable to choose the thickness of the plates so that the gaps between the boards are not too large, as this creates discomfort for a seated person. If there were no suitable slabs at hand, you can solve the problem by laying additional flooring from boards laid horizontally. This option will allow you to get a seat without gaps at all.

In addition to plates, you can use other types of blocks.

One of the simplest options - fixing is required only for blocks

By applying imagination, the user is able to create a lot of design options. If desired and possible, you can make a formwork and pour your own version of the concrete base, which has an exclusive appearance or configuration.

From improvised materials

At the summer cottage, you can find a lot of improvised elements from which original and stylish pieces of garden furniture are obtained. One option is to use pallets from bricks or cinder blocks left over from the time of construction or repair. Recently, through the efforts of designers and marketers, furniture made from pallets (pallets) has become fashionable, it is used not only in the country, but also in residential premises.

Pallets are now truly in demand in the design of garden plots, and their scope is not limited to furniture alone.

Making a bench out of pallets is easy. You just need to install them on top of each other in the right way. You don’t even have to connect them together, since the pallets are quite stable and lie motionless in a stack, and if necessary, it’s easy to build another composition from them by attaching a table or additional seats.

An uncomplicated and, moreover, in its own way stylish option: savings and originality!

Video: Creating a bench with a pallet back in 10 minutes

Another interesting option is to use old chairs. There is also a wide scope for imagination here. The easiest way is to disassemble the chairs, take the rear legs, which are structurally connected to the backs.

Try to take chairs of decent quality

From the bars, a frame is assembled to the size of the seat and attached to the backs with legs installed opposite each other. If necessary, you can connect the backrests in the upper part on one side, which as a result forms a solid support for the back.

This design is suitable for a maximum of two, but it is better to do it for children.

Another way is to make them tightly in a row and connect them with the sides.

Other options

There are other ways to make garden benches. The imagination of users has no limits, as practice has shown, garden furniture can be made from almost anything. For example, benches from scraps of plastic pipes. They are assembled both in the usual way using standard fittings, and by welding or gluing along the side surfaces.

Cheap and cheerful: nothing more, everything in the house!

From above, the pipes form a flat plane, and from below, supports are created from pipes of the same length. The remaining tubes, shorter ones, simply “hang” above the ground.

Another, no less original option for making a bench for the dacha is the use of thick tree branches.

Benches of this type are an excellent accent in the design of a country-style cottage.

If old trees were cut down or pruned nearby, this option can be used at no cost. The bench is assembled using self-tapping screws or nails. You can make a drawing yourself or adapt the finished version.

Making a garden bench does not require a very technological result and even allows for some negligence. The main advantage of such furniture is not in the quality of manufacture, but in the original and unexpected idea, idea, design find. It is important to accurately capture the style and create an accurate image of the product, to the maximum extent corresponding to the appearance of the entire site, house, surrounding landscape. Sometimes two pieces of wood stacked on top of each other create a greater effect than a complex and expensive construction of the most modern materials. You should not start complex and expensive work, it is better to use your imagination and create a unique product.

A garden bench is not just ordinary furniture designed for relaxation. With the help of this furniture, you can decorate your backyard, create whole compositions that will fit perfectly into the surrounding space of the garden or yard. It is not difficult to make a garden bench with your own hands, the main thing is to choose the design of the furniture, its location and the material from which it will be made.

Garden bench materials

Plastic

Lightweight plastic furniture has a lot of advantages: it is easy to move from place to place, it is easy to take care of it, it has an affordable price category. You can choose any color option that fits perfectly into the landscape design. Cons of plastic furniture: quickly covered with scratches, fades in the sun, looks cheap.

Or even a chair. By the way, chair cushions are foam chips in plastic bags. Warm, cozy, extravagant

Wood

This material is ideal for creating furniture: it absorbs heat, looks noble, and is easy to process. For the manufacture of benches, any type of wood is suitable, the main thing is that the material is sufficiently well dried and does not have external defects.

A rock

This natural and beautiful material fits perfectly into any stylistic direction of landscape design. Stone compositions look solid, noble and unusual. But, despite many advantages, natural stone has several disadvantages. Sitting on a stone bench is not very comfortable, and it is not safe for health either. Therefore, together with the bench, it is imperative to make warm covers or pads. Stone compositions are installed permanently, they cannot be moved from place to place.

Metal

Garden benches, made by hot or cold forging, are a real decoration of a garden or a place to relax. The designs look beautiful, stylish, especially if additional decorative elements were used. Metal is most often combined with wood, glass or other material.

Requirements that a garden bench must meet

Convenience

First of all, you need to think about the ergonomic design of furniture for relaxation. It should be comfortable and comfortable. It is best to make furniture with a back on which you can lean back and relax.

Security

The garden bench must be strong, carefully assembled and withstand heavy loads. For these purposes, it is best to use high-quality materials and accessories.

Resistant to changes in humidity and temperature

Since the furniture is made for the garden or courtyard, the material must withstand all climatic changes without defects and damage.

Bench design

The length of the seat and back will be 1500 mm. Three people can comfortably accommodate on this furniture. Seat height - 450 mm, back height - 900 mm. The back is preferably positioned at an angle of 18-20 degrees. The seat width is 400 mm.

Material and tools for making a wooden garden bench

  1. Wooden boards 1500 by 150 mm, 35-40 mm thick. Three blanks for the seat and two for the back.
  2. Blanks that act as legs and holders for the backrest - 900 by 150 mm, 35-40 mm thick.
  3. Blanks for the front legs of the bench - 360 by 150 mm, 35-40 mm thick.
  4. Beams 40 by 40 mm will be used to reinforce the design of the bench.
  5. Self-tapping screws.
  6. Electric jigsaw for cutting boards.
  7. Electric planer for grinding the surface of boards and chamfering.
  8. Screwdriver.
  9. Sandpaper.
  10. Lacquer and primer.

Making a wooden structure

Step 1. Boards for the manufacture of benches can be purchased immediately in size, if there are none for sale, the wood will have to be cut into blanks using a jigsaw or a miter saw.

After the wood is cut to the desired length, it must be carefully processed. The blanks for the back and seat need to be sanded. All ends of the boards also need to be processed with an electric planer, it is desirable to give them a rounded shape.

Step 2. The long back legs of the bench, which additionally serve as a frame for the backrest, need to be set to the correct angle of inclination. To do this, you need to mark two wooden blanks with a length of 900 mm.

The first is the height of the bench - 400 mm. This section of the board does not need processing. Starting from the segment, you need to make a cut of 20 degrees along the rest of the board, which forms the angle of inclination of the back of the bench. The cuts on the two rear legs should be the same both in height and in the angle of inclination. Otherwise, the bench will be skewed.

Step 3 The legs are assembled first in the design of the bench. The distance between the front and rear legs is 280 mm. The legs are connected with a beam, which is cut to the entire width of the bench - by 500 mm. It is advisable to do double strapping - top and bottom.

Step 4 After the two sides of the bench are assembled, you can connect them together with boards designed for sitting. The boards are screwed with self-tapping screws to the upper strapping beams. It is desirable that gaps of equal size remain between the wooden blanks - 1-2 cm. These gaps contribute to air circulation and moisture removal.

Step 5 Strengthening the structure of the bench. In order for garden furniture to be stable and durable, it is desirable to strengthen its design. For these purposes, you need to make the lower trim along the legs with the help of beams. Two blanks, having a length of 1500 mm, are screwed to the front and rear legs of the bench. If there is not enough lumber, you can use one cross-beam, which is attached to the bottom rails of the strapping.

Step 6 Bench back assembly. The bench is almost ready, the last touch remains - the fastening of two boards that act as a backrest. The first board is recommended to be fixed at a distance of 200 mm from the seat. The second - at a distance of 380 mm from the seat.

Step 7 Finishing coating of garden furniture. To protect the wood from environmental influences, it is desirable to use varnish. Impregnation will protect the bench from moisture, mold, insect pests.

Lacquer will give the furniture a beautiful and elegant look. To give the wood a shine, you need to thoroughly polish the material, and varnish the blanks several times.

DIY metal garden bench

You can decorate a personal plot not only with wooden furniture. Metal benches are another way to create a cozy and comfortable place to relax. To make a metal frame, it is not necessary to master the technique of hot forging.

An example of a bench made of metal and wood

You can apply the technology of cold forging, in which the frame of metal blanks is welded into a single structure. In the manufacture, you can ennoble various decorative elements, unusual inserts and additions.

Tools and materials for the manufacture of a garden bench by cold forging

  1. Angle grinder with discs for cutting and polishing metal.
  2. with a set of electrodes.
  3. Pipe bending device. This can be a mini-machine "Snail" or a bench vise with which you can bend metal according to a template. This device is necessary if a complex shape of the back with rounded edges is planned.
  4. Square metal pipes (30 mm by 30 mm).
  5. Decorative elements of hot forging to decorate the structure.
  6. Seat and back material (wood, MDF, plywood).
  7. Roulette.
  8. Level.
  9. Primer for metal.
  10. Protective coating for wood.

Step-by-step instruction

It is quite difficult to make a complex and elaborate design of a bench without experience. But to make a simple and durable design can be easily.

Step 1. Develop the dimensions and dimensions of the bench. A standard-sized garden bench has a length of 1500 mm, a width of 400-500 mm, and a back height of 800-900 mm. Corner forms of furniture are the easiest to make, so for the first time it is better to try to make a model simpler with your own hands.

Step 2 Making a frame for a seat. The metal pipe needs to be cut into 4 fragments: 2 by 1500 mm and 2 by 400 mm. All details in a rectangle. To make the seat more durable, you can weld 2 additional stiffeners into the rectangular frame.

Step 3 Leg manufacturing. The metal pipe needs to be cut into 4 identical pieces of 460 mm each. These blanks need to be welded to the corners of the bench. It is recommended to weld additional stiffeners between the front and rear legs.

Step 4 Back making. Two workpieces with a length of 440 mm and one workpiece with a length of 1500 mm must be welded together. Then this design is welded to the already finished part of the bench. The back should be attached at an angle of 15-20 degrees. In this case, sitting on the bench will be comfortable.

Step 5 To make the back of the bench stronger, you can additionally strengthen its frame with stiffeners, transverse or longitudinal.

Step 6 The metal frame of the garden bench is ready. The final work is the cleaning of all welding seams, polishing the metal and coating the frame with a primer.

Step 7 Wooden back and seat. Wooden boards or beams are the most suitable material for finishing a metal bench. The wood for the back and seat must be carefully planed and polished, the chamfers are processed. The tree needs to be cut into blanks that can be mounted both along and across the back and seat. It all depends on the length of the material.

Step 8 Using an electric drill, it is required to drill holes in the metal frame of the bench for mounting the wooden trim of the bench. To connect metal and wood, it is recommended to use bolts with rounded heads and nuts.

Step 9 After the back and seat are bolted to the metal frame, the wood needs to be stained or varnished. This will protect the material from environmental influences.

The bench for the garden is ready. Due to the fact that the metal pipe is hollow inside, the furniture is not very heavy and can be moved from place to place. Well-crafted metal and wood easily tolerate high humidity and temperature changes, so that a hand-made bench will last for many years.
