How to make from plywood. Plywood crafts for garden decoration: we make budget garden figures

Wood and sheets (plates) based on it are one of the cheapest and most pliable materials. For those who like to work with a jigsaw, plywood is primarily of interest.

It is her home craftsmen who most often choose to make various crafts. If you organize the work correctly, you can create real masterpieces.

Crafts from this material are made for various purposes, but basically they can be divided into two groups - for decorating rooms or territories (for example, fencing from the inside, a garden plot, and so on).

Kind of plywood

If you focus on the optimal combination of indicators such as quality and price, then PSF or FC products are selected. It is characterized by resistance to moisture and temperature fluctuations. This alone is enough to ensure the durability of the handmade crafts. But between these varieties of plywood there is a fundamental difference - in the composition of the adhesive, which holds the veneer layers together.

In the first case, it is toxic, so FSF sheets are used only for outdoor work. But for crafts intended for placement in the house, FC plywood is quite suitable. Its counterparts are much more expensive, and therefore are not considered as a material for simple, easy-to-perform crafts.

Type of sheet grinding

It is easy to understand: Ш1 and Ш2 - respectively, one- and two-sided; NSh - rough plywood. That is, the craft will still have to be “brought to mind”, polished. The choice for this parameter depends on how it is planned to be designed and placed in the future. A sample fixed on the wall and, for example, a figurine (stand, vase, toy or other), which can be viewed from all sides, are different things.

plywood texture

A lot depends on personal preference here. If it is planned to preserve the natural look of the tree when applying the protective coating of the craft, then under the varnish it is better to purchase plywood from birch veneer. But for subsequent coloring, it is desirable to choose pine.

For various plywood crafts, it is advisable to focus on oil or acrylic based. The explanation is simple - they are less prone to fading in the sun, and therefore do not have to frequently renew the outer coating; it will not change its original appearance for several years.

Plywood grade

When choosing a sheet for crafts, it must first be inspected for knotty and inclusions. Significant defects will not only complicate the cutting of the material, but also initiate the appearance of cracks or “pits” (as a result of the same knots falling out). Next - inspection of the end surfaces. During the cutting process, plywood is subjected to dynamic loads (vibrations). If at least signs of veneer peeling are visible on the side parts, such material should not be purchased, even if its price is too tempting.

In the future, in the process of making crafts, many problems will arise. As a result - rejection of plywood and its increased consumption. In total terms, this will come out approximately the same in terms of money compared to the acquisition of high-grade material, and in terms of the time spent and the quality of work - a big minus.

Sheet thickness

If crafts are cut out with an electric tool, then it is limited to 30 mm. For a manual jigsaw, it is advisable to use relatively thin plywood; maximum three layers. That is, no more than 9 mm thick.

What you need to work

jigsaw

This is a priori, since we are talking about making crafts using such a tool. The question is different - which one is better to work with. Electric models are much more expensive than manual counterparts, but have a lot of advantages. About in .

For example, high cutting speed and accuracy, edge cleanliness, the ability to change cutting parameters, and a number of others. If a plywood craft is not a one-time, short-term hobby, then it’s worth spending money on an electric / jigsaw. It is universal, and it will come in handy more than once on the farm, because, depending on the type of file, it can “work” not only with wood, but also with non-ferrous metals, plastics, and plexiglass.

A little more difficult with a manual jigsaw. Its design is quite simple - a frame with screw clamps and a handle + file.

The nuance is that the cutting blades break quite easily (from excessive pressure, changing the position of a hand tool), and therefore it is advisable to purchase them with a margin; well, they are cheap.

Hacksaw

It is needed only at one stage - when cutting the overall sheet into separate fragments. Doing this with a manual jigsaw is an unpromising and unprofitable occupation; a lot of time and files will be spent.

Stand

No one will lead cutting plywood on weight; This is clear. Cut out the details by laying the sheet on the countertop - the risk of damaging it. It is in order to ensure the "safety" of the latter that the stand is needed. With your own hands, it can be made from cutting boards. What such a device looks like (one of the options) can be seen in the figure.

Fixing the stand on the base is done with clamps (on a non-working table) or self-tapping screws (in case there is a carpentry workbench in the annex, shed, garage). Although this is not the only mounting options. It is easy to understand how to proceed, in accordance with local conditions.

Skin

The ideal tool for fine woodworking -. But for plywood crafts that do not differ in large areas, it is not suitable. Therefore, only sandpaper; medium fraction - for primary grinding of workpieces and with fine grain - for finishing.

Additionally

  • Files and files.
  • Awl.
  • A simple pencil and carbon paper.
  • Glue, if the craft is created composite or multi-level, that is, with the fixation of two or more figured fragments in separate sections.
  • Varnishes, paints, stains.

Examples of drawings and sketches of plywood crafts

Copying "one to one" in this case is hardly advisable. Any work done by one's own hands is a process with a creative component. That is why the dimensions should be determined independently, depending on where it is supposed to place (or how to use) the craft. For example, whether it will “look” in a particular place, whether it will organically fit into the interior of the room.

Even if you liked the drawing, it is not difficult to change the geometry of the figure by applying the scaling rules. Especially when it comes to drawing a contour on plywood with a simple pencil; correct any mistake, in some areas it is quite easy to correct something. It is not much more difficult to modify any sketch, bringing something original, original to the sample.

There is another solution - you can download from the Internet any picture that you like. Printing it in the right scale is not a problem. It remains only with the help of carbon paper to transfer it to plywood and shade the areas that need to be cut out. This is when it comes to curly crafts. With a contour sample it's even easier; cut exactly along the line - and that's it, you're done. It remains only to do the decoration of the product.

Basic rules for sawing with a jigsaw

  • Laying under a sheet of rigid substrate. It is in order to ensure the hardness of the surface under the plywood that the stand is used. A sheet, even a small one, bends quite easily (under pressure), therefore, without this device, a high-quality cut, strictly along the line, will not work.
  • The working body of the jigsaw (sawing) must be strictly perpendicular to the end of the sheet. And constantly, throughout the entire process of cutting the material.
  • The tool is fed along the line in a translational motion, but without effort. Otherwise, the file will break immediately. As well as when it deviates from the "vertical".
  • Sawing holes "deaf", that is, somewhere on a sheet of plywood, indented from its edge, is carried out as follows. At any point of the outlined contour, a "hole" is drilled with a slight offset to the center of the fragment. The diameter is chosen so that the file easily enters it. After attaching it to the tool frame, you can cut in any convenient direction.
  • Figured drank in plywood involves sharp turns, smooth bends, and so on. First, at the point of change of direction with a jigsaw, without changing its position, it is necessary to make a small hole in the material. To do this, you need to continue the cut with a file, strictly maintaining the orientation of the tool, and at the same time turn a piece of plywood. As soon as the plane of the cutting part coincides with the required direction of further cutting, it can already be carried out along the intended line.

Having mastered the manufacture of fairly simple plywood crafts, you can take on more complex options. As an example - self-assembly of furniture (racks, whatnots, original hanging shelves). With a skillful approach to business, plywood makes excellent countertops, cutting boards, window trims, and so on. It is easy to make a folding chair from this material, and various modifications. Who is interested in this.

Plywood also makes excellent frames for paintings and photographs. Those who have a plot will be able to do the decoration of outbuildings; the same gazebo, a house over a well, or something else. Lots of options. The main thing is to want to learn.

In the process of preparing for sawing with a jigsaw, one should not forget that all drawings and drawings are nothing more than the basis for developing your project. A little imagination, time, effort, and you can make a really real masterpiece out of plywood.

If sawing out various decorative elements, wood burning or carving has become your new hobby, then our advice would be to start with a material such as plywood.

There are several significant reasons for this:

Plywood is easy to work with.

If you have a good tool in your hands, and you start with small figurines, then making them will take you only a couple of hours.

The material is universal in use, so you can literally make anything you want from it: furniture, toys, small decorative elements.

All this can be a wonderful addition to the interior of your home.

Features of working with the material

What is a plywood sheet. It consists of several sheets of veneer at once, which are interconnected with glue.

Important: plywood can be of different types: based on beech, birch, pine.

Not only the quality of the finished product, but even its structure and color depends on which sheet you choose.

If you are going to cut out various figures with a jigsaw, then you need to choose the highest quality varieties of plywood.

They are distinguished by their special strength, which ensures that the plywood does not crack, spoiling the entire appearance of the product at the most unpredictable moment.

If you are going to start work immediately, immediately on the day of purchase, then choose only dry sheets of wood.

They will not break a jigsaw file every 10 minutes.

To work with plywood, you will need to acquire a number of tools.

In principle, they are always the same for all types of products, so only a one-time investment is required:

  • jigsaw
  • Jigsaw files
  • Hand or electric drill
  • Ruler
  • grinding machine
  • Burner.

Framework

If you want to beautifully decorate your home or present an original gift to someone close to you, make a plywood frame with your own hands.

The preparation process will not take you much time, because you only need to get the necessary materials.

Note!

They are standard for all cases, and we have already mentioned them before.

We will offer you workshops on light plywood crafts. You can make both a regular straight frame and carve various patterns and figures on it.

First you need to make a template, and after that you can cut it out, trace the outlines with a pencil on plywood and start the manufacturing process.

This stage is not only the most responsible, but also the most exciting. If you put a piece of your soul into the work, everything will definitely work out. The finished structure must be varnished. Ready!

doll furniture

This task will be a real test for parents.

Note!

The so-called test of acquired design skills.

A feature of the creation of doll furniture is that children absolutely do not tolerate falsehood.

If they see that the furniture has not been worked out in detail, and instead of a stove for your favorite doll, you brought an ordinary rectangular bar, then you simply cannot avoid serious insults and childish disappointments.

The second feature of making such crafts from plywood using a jigsaw is that all this furniture must be carefully worked out with sandpaper or a grinder.

Your child will constantly be in contact with these self-made toys, and in the case of poorly finished edges, they may get hurt.

Note!

Well, the last feature of plywood and home crafts is that the materials for such furniture must be absolutely non-toxic and normal for constant contact with the child, because he can drag it into his mouth or take it to bed with him.

This is not a simple application or paper craft, so you need to take it seriously, following a whole list of actions that need to be completed.

Performing work from plywood

Just as simple furniture is made in detail, and then assembled into one piece of furniture, do-it-yourself plywood crafts should be done separately.

To do this, first of all, prepare special drawings of plywood crafts, on which you specify the dimensions of all parts and their fastenings.

Take the finished plywood sheet and attach the paper part template to it.

Circle the part with a pencil and cut along the contour with a jigsaw.

After that, each detail must be cleaned with sandpaper or a grinder, and only then must the piece of furniture be assembled.

When you're done with the whole set, open it up with varnish.

Below are different options and photos of plywood crafts. Choose the one you like.

When buying various interior items, people are faced with the fact that they have a significant value. Therefore, they prefer to do the work with their own hands. In this case, different materials can be selected. A process such as do-it-yourself plywood furniture is an excellent solution for forming a variety of designs. If you correctly process the material, as well as provide it with good care, then it can even be used to create kitchen sets.

Before using plywood directly to get furniture with your own hands, you should study all the parameters and features of this material in order to guarantee a long service life of the resulting products. Plywood is considered an easy-to-use material, therefore it is not required to use any unique tools during its processing and use, therefore it is ideal when it is planned to manufacture furniture from plywood.

The main features of this material include:

  • low cost, which allows you to get multifunctional, comfortable and attractive furniture for the kitchen or other rooms at low cost, so kitchen sets, cabinets or even sofas are created;
  • to create furniture from plywood with your own hands, you do not need to have specific skills, so this process is implemented by any person who does not have experience in this area;
  • it is allowed to place such structures in the children's room, as they are environmentally friendly and safe, so they cannot cause any damage to the body of children;
  • for decoration, different methods can be used to get a really attractive design;
  • the furniture is durable, with good mechanical elasticity and resistance to moisture;
  • with proper processing of the material, it will be resistant to fire.

The main condition for obtaining a high-quality design is the creation of a scheme, and furniture drawings can be made independently or using special computer programs that allow you to easily obtain the desired scheme.

Plywood is created from veneer made using birch wood or needles. Coniferous plywood is considered the most popular, which has a rather attractive appearance, and is also considered an ideal solution for making do-it-yourself plywood furniture.

Materials and tools

If home-made plywood furniture is planned, it is necessary to prepare in advance all the elements used in the process of work, these include:

  • plywood sheets - their thickness depends on what loads will affect the structures, as well as for what purposes they are used. If you need to make a high-quality and durable frame, as well as shelves, then the thickness of the material should not be less than 18 mm. If facades are made, then material with a thickness of up to 12 mm is considered optimal. For doors in wall cabinets fixed using stiffeners, it is enough that the plywood has a thickness of 6 mm;
  • fasteners - in the manufacture of any plywood furniture, special fasteners are certainly used to ensure efficient and reliable connection of individual elements of various designs. Often, production involves the use of only screws, since durable sheets are not subject to delamination or crumbling. For attractive designs and to obtain reliable connections, minifixes can be used, but they are considered quite difficult to use, since it is necessary to properly mark up to create holes. Additionally, for the reliability of fasteners, it is recommended to purchase glue or silicone sealant, which should be used to process the most problematic areas of the products, as well as those parts that will be exposed to moisture;
  • accessories - it includes different handles, hinges and a variety of closers. These elements facilitate the process of applying any design for its intended purpose;
  • decorative elements - they can be represented by putty and various decorative films. Often, furniture is varnished, various paints or stains;
  • the tools used include a screwdriver, replaced if necessary with screwdrivers, a drill with different drills, a hammer, chisels, a tape measure, a square, an electric jigsaw, a planer, a hacksaw and some other elements that are available in almost any home.

After preparing the necessary elements, the direct process of creating kitchen furniture at home begins.

Stages of work on the manufacture of kitchen furniture

Initially, you should decide what kind of kitchen furniture will be created, what dimensions it will have, and also what its other parameters will be. It is recommended to make a special scheme, according to which all stages of work will be carried out further.

Particularly much attention should be paid to calculations so that there are no distortions or other defects on the furniture.

How to take measurements correctly

The cutting map will help you make a kitchen with your own hands from wood

Drawing of a kitchen set

The assembly process begins with the creation of individual parts that are the main components of a complete structure. For this, the following steps are performed:

  • on pre-purchased plywood sheets, markings are applied showing all the details of the future structure. It is important here not to make a mistake with the size, since incorrect preliminary actions will lead to a skewed design;
  • cutting is performed, for which it is necessary to use suitable tools;
  • for each workpiece made, it is necessary to ensure optimal preparation. To do this, the elements are initially cleaned with a skin. Next, they are polished, and especially carefully, it should be carried out from the ends of the elements.

If you plan to use different decorative films as a decor, then it is recommended to apply putty in two layers, and only then sand the base, and you can completely eliminate processing if you use laminated plywood.

Headset manufacturing

Plywood is a fairly dense material, so it is allowed not to use wood beams to obtain a high-quality frame. A kitchen set is made in several successive stages:

  • a markup is applied to the made parts, which determines the location of the holes for confirmations or screws;
  • holes are made, and for this it is recommended to use a special stepped drill, as this will allow you to get holes with or without threaded parts;
  • if holes for a standard screw are required, then reaming is considered optimal for this, for which a drill of a significant diameter is used;
  • on the front side of the sheets, it is recommended to use fasteners using minifixes so that it is not necessary to use decorative caps.

Prior to bonding, the parts should be treated with high-quality silicone sealant, which ensures the tightness of the resulting joints.

Rigid material does not need an additional frame

Plugs for self-tapping screws

After the kitchen details are ready, the assembly of the structure and the installation of the headset follow.

Assembly

As soon as all the details are completely ready, the kitchen set is directly assembled. For this, the following actions are implemented:

  • doors are hung, for which suitable hinges are used to provide the desired opening angle of the elements;
  • shelves, drawers or other compartments and elements are created and attached to ensure the convenience of using the headset for its intended purpose.

It is desirable to make doors using a plywood sheet, the thickness of which is 6 mm. To give them stability, it is recommended to use stiffeners. To create shelves, it is desirable to use sheets with a thickness of 18 mm, and the chamfer should be carefully removed from the front edges, and the resulting cuts are covered with putty. After it dries, they are polished, after which they can be decorated with various paints, films or other finishing materials. Finishing the resulting structure can be done in different ways, with photos of the finished results below.

If a self-adhesive film is chosen for finishing, then it is desirable to use an expensive and high-quality material that has an attractive appearance, but at the same time has good strength, resistance to various factors and is distinguished by a long service life.

A good solution for countertops is the use of laminated plywood. The creation of such a design is easily implemented with your own hands. For this, the following actions are performed:

  • high-quality laminated plywood of the optimal size is purchased;
  • markings are applied that determine the dimensions of the future countertop;
  • construction is cut out;
  • edges are processed;
  • the tabletop is attached to the lower drawers of the headset;
  • covered with protective compounds, varnish, sealant or other means;
  • the joint between the walls and the countertop is closed with a plinth.

Thus, obtaining a high-quality and reliable design is quite simple.

The solid wood worktop will be a spectacular accent and practical decor for a wooden kitchen.

Protective and connecting strips for worktops

Finishing

The resulting do-it-yourself plywood furniture must be well decorated so that it looks beautiful. For this, various methods are used, involving the use of certain materials. The most popular methods are:

  • the use of different colors that are perfect for the color scheme of the room;
  • installation of LED lighting for cabinets and drawers, which not only improves the appearance of the headset, but also ensures its ease of use;
  • applying varnish, while maintaining the natural look of wood;
  • the use of a variety of self-adhesive films that are available in different types, and at the same time are easy to apply.

The choice of finishing method depends on the wishes of the owners of the premises.

Rules for working with plywood

When working with this material, certain requirements are taken into account:

  • thin sheets are cut with a sharpened knife, medium ones with a manual jigsaw, and sheets with a significant thickness are cut with an electric jigsaw;
  • sheets are not connected with nails or screws until holes for fasteners are created in advance;
  • the material is not cut across the fibers;
  • before gluing the elements, they must be cleaned.

Thus, with strict adherence to the instructions and certain rules, it is ensured that really high-quality and reliable plywood furniture is obtained. It can have different sizes, shapes, colors and other parameters.

Plywood is processed in different ways. For this, woodworking tools are used: manual and electric. The material is made in such a way that the glue in the plywood board causes the cutting tools to wear out quickly. Therefore, all tools used must be purchased from hard alloys. Plywood can be cut with laser beams or 3500 bar hydraulic systems. But this is already the most modern technology.

sawing plywood

Sawing works best if you use for its purpose

band saw or circular saw. In the event that sawing is done correctly, you will get a clean cut. Sawing is carried out across the fibers on the front side, then along them. In this case, the splitting of the corners will not occur.

To make sawing on the front side of the plywood sheet, a hand or band saw is useful. If on the reverse side, it is better to use disk or contour. When sawing with a circular saw, there should be a high speed, but a low feed rate. The teeth of the saw blade should penetrate to a shallow depth.

Drilling plywood

When you drill plywood, use a sharp drill bit with a front cutter. Then the drilled holes get smooth edges. Drill from the front first. There will be no splits on the back of the sheet if you apply a backing sheet.

For wall, ceiling and floor coverings use screws or threaded nails. But the head of the nail in any case should be pressed in or hidden altogether. To ensure hidden nailing, use wire nails. External facing panels are nailed with acid-resistant nails, they well protect the work surface from rust.

Nails should be equal in length to 2.5–3 panel thicknesses. The interval between nails, which is practiced for panels under the ceiling and walls, is 10-20 cm along the edges, in the middle - 20-30 cm. All this depends on the type of nails and the load. In underfloor panels, spacing should be 20–30 cm along the edges and 40–50 cm in the middle. Plywood board is a separate strip of veneer, where the fibers are arranged across. Therefore, nails are usually hammered close to the edge. It is best to practice the distance to the edge of the panel - 12-15 mm.

In structures that remain resistant to stress, strength and fixation of nails play an important role. The nails must be hammered in in the correct order, and the nails are chosen long and with large hats. You can use screws. You can fix the structure using glue at the joints.

Screw connections

Very often plywood panels are fixed with screws. This happens when finishing, when creating cabinet furniture, when building shipbuilding and building exhibition stands. First, the auxiliary holes are drilled, the hole in the panel must be made the same as the diameter of the screw and the smaller hole in the frame; the diameter of the latter is 50% of the previous one. If the screw is screwed in, the head should not penetrate the face veneer. Washers must be used when using domed nails. If the sheathing plywood is attached to the metal components of the structure, special screws are used. They fasten the plywood board from the back side, while the front side is not damaged.

Trailer and cargo container underfloor panels are attached to the metal chassis with self-tapping threaded screws. Plywood boards 27 mm thick are fastened with M6x40 mm screws. Penetrating into the plywood plate, the screw cuts a thread in the metal. Simple and fast.

Thin plywood panels, which are used in transport engineering, are also easy to attach to a metal structure with self-tapping screws. Fastening plywood with bolts is the easiest way. Make the hole for the bolt 2 mm larger than its diameter. To protect the surface of the panel, washers and nuts are placed under the bolt heads. To avoid damaging the wood under the bolt, do not overtighten the bolt. If the plywood is used outdoors, an overtightened bolt will press into the surface of the board, causing the board to swell with moisture and cracking around the bolt in the surface of the plywood sheet.

Locks, shelves and hinges attach firmly and securely to the plywood surface from either side. The strongest fastening is carried out using clamping devices. To place the screws right on the edges of the panels, you need to pre-drill holes for them.

Plywood installation

Plywood can be attached to the desired structure with glue, nails, staples, screws, rivets or bolts. To choose the right attachment for fastening, you will have to take into account the conditions in which this design will be used, in addition, the desired strength and, of course, appearance. Before mounting, the plywood board must be prepared, taking into account the future conditions of its operation. It is also necessary to carry out preventive work so that in the future the plywood board does not expand or contract when it is affected by temperature or moisture. A gap of 2 mm is usually left at the joints. Sometimes craftsmen use an elastic filler between the steel frame of the structure and the edge of the panel. In heated constructions, proper ventilation of the plywood board must be ensured.

Connection types

Joints and connections are the most important components of plywood structures. Plywood boards can have tongue and groove joints, as well as many others. If they are carried out in accordance with the norms, the construction of walls, floors, as well as supporting elements will be reliable and durable. Most attention should be paid to the ends of the plywood board as the most sensitive part, so the processing of the joints should be at the forefront if the plywood is used outdoors.

In walls and ceilings, butt joints, open joint, tongue and groove, as well as fold and strip joints are practiced. If the structure is used outdoors, the connections with strips are best protected from external influences. Aluminum vertical and horizontal profiles will protect the edges of the plywood board well. In this case, they are excellent at fighting rust, this is an excellent material for the facades of houses. But, if architectural rules require outdoor use of an open connection, the edges need to be treated properly. 2 mm/m is saved under panel extension. If a butt joint is practiced, the distance is 3–6 mm. The tongue and groove connection is used for floors and panels going under roofs. The tongue-and-groove joint will prevent the panels from lifting up, it will not damage the roofing materials, it will withstand greater loads compared to a conventional butt joint. The panel is fastened with hidden nailing.

The load-bearing capacity of the structure is best achieved if a stepped profile or similar special profile with flanges is used to support the edges of the adjoining panels. Such profiles are used in the construction of the floors of trailers and containers for the transport of goods.

Gluing plywood

Uncoated plywood is glued together with wood glue. It is chosen depending on the method of operation, the percentage of moisture in the process of further operation and strength. PVA, phenol, polyurethane, epoxy, etc. are used as adhesive materials. PVA is best used indoors. It adheres strongly and has good transparency. the glue is also glued very high quality, they can withstand the most adverse environmental conditions. When plywood is bonded to metal, the epoxy type is better. With regard to contact adhesives, they are used to connect large surfaces and lined plywood. The latter is usually used indoors.

It is better not to glue laminated plywood at all. Film-coated plywood cannot be glued for a long time. If film-coated plywood is fixed with glue, before that, the glued surface is carefully cleaned to a layer of wood with sanding paper. Glue is better to use epoxy. The surface must be kept clean and dry.

The adhesive is applied evenly to the two surfaces to be bonded using a roller or brush. The necessary force of pressure will be provided by clamps, screws or nails. The spacing between nails is 1 nail per 40 cm2. It is better to remove excess glue immediately, until they are completely frozen. Be sure to read the instructions provided by the adhesive manufacturer beforehand.

Sanding plywood

The surface of the plywood sheet is sanded with coarse abrasive paper (No. 80–100). Do this perpendicular to the grain of the wood. For perfectly smooth processing, sand with fine-grained paper and in the longitudinal direction of the texture. This must be done, for example, in order to then cover the surface with high-quality varnish.

Surface finish of plywood

The sanded flat surface of plywood can be finished further. It is laminated, laminated, painted, impregnated with a special paint or solution. When choosing the latter, the possibility of further cracking on the facing veneer is taken into account. Plywood is covered with laminate or veneer made from valuable wood. Sometimes a thin film is used. Plywood can be wallpapered. In the event that prior to their processing, plywood boards were folded in rooms with high humidity, they should be dried. The surface is cleared of the dust which has arisen after the previous processing. The procedure is repeated before each stage of finishing. Usually 1-2 coats are applied. It depends on the quality you require.

Edge processing

To align the edges of the plywood board after sawing, they are lightly planed. It is best to plan from the corners towards the middle, avoiding the splitting that can occur at the corners. Panel edges are sanded. The ends are painted 2-3 times with acrylic paint with special additives.

Plywood primer

Wood is a natural material. It expands and contracts in a completely natural way if it is affected by humidity and temperature. And even the transverse layers of veneer located inside the slab cannot resist this. Cracks on the inside of the veneer expand and contract with changes in humidity. For these reasons, it is necessary to pre-prime plywood during subsequent painting. This requires elastic paints, they need to be combined correctly. If the paper base is dyed, this will prevent cracking of the ink layer due to moisture. In case of high humidity and outdoor use, the plywood board must be painted on the reverse side. In this case, it is simply necessary to process the ends, and do it carefully and preferably several times. Plywood that is used outdoors is painted with special paints.

Plywood painting

When paint is applied to plywood, a completely natural texture pattern appears. The surface can be painted as a whole, without showing the grain of the wood. The paint is applied with a brush or spray. Colored plywood can be used for interior and exterior decoration. Before the last painting, the plywood surface must be treated with a special solution in order to prevent blue and fungi from appearing on it later, because transparent paints contain a minimum of a binder, therefore their biological stability is very limited.

Plywood varnishing

Birch plywood, especially if its surface is varnished, looks very good on the outside. To a lesser extent, dust sticks to it. Before varnishing, the panel is sanded with fine-grained sandpaper. Of course there is dust. It needs to be removed. Cover the surface with diluted varnish.

Features of a quality cut

To cut plywood, use circular and band saws. But still, the cut will turn out perfectly clean if you follow certain rules:

Initially, you need to cut across the fibers, and then along. With this trick you can avoid splitting the corners;

If the cut is made from the inside, a band or hand saw is used, from the back - a circular or contour saw;

If cutting is carried out with a hand-held circular saw, it is necessary to maintain a high speed of revolutions, and feed the plywood slowly;

It must always be remembered that whatever saw is used, it must necessarily have fine teeth. The risk of creases in this case is significantly reduced;

If you stick adhesive tape on the cutting line, the surface of the plywood is protected from chipping.

Smooth saw using guides.

As a rule, a circular saw is equipped with a special device, a kind of side stop: this allows you to reduce wobbling when cutting, since the tool rests on the side edge of the part. But this option can be called, most likely, the repetition of the contour, but not a 100% guarantee of straightness. Sinuousness, albeit barely noticeable, is still present.

In order to achieve a smooth edge, you can use a guide bar. It should be perfectly flat - 5-20 mm thick. Moreover, its length should slightly overlap the length of the cut. Such a bar is installed to the left of the circular saw, while taking into account the thickness of the cut and the distance from the edge of the platform.

When performing this process, it is necessary to fix the bar on the sheet with clamps. And also correctly position the sheet on the table or supports so that the plywood is evenly supported from below. This technique will help to avoid jamming of the saw when cutting.

You can also cut FK plywood along a curved pattern using an electric jigsaw. To do this, one piece (template) of perfect quality is prepared, cut out carefully and the cut is sanded by hand, brought to perfection. Next, the part can be attached to the next workpiece or stack of workpieces, secured with clamps so that the template does not move out, and cut with a jigsaw. You can also cut a rough saw with a small indent from the template of 3-5 mm, and then mill the final surface of the edge with a manual router. The result will be excellent in every detail.

How to cut thin plywood with a regular hacksaw?

So, the cut line is outlined, if you continue to take up the hacksaw and start sawing, the result, namely the edges, will turn out to be ugly. The problem is not that a person cuts incorrectly, it's just the specific features of plywood. There is a small nuance that will help achieve an even cut. It's simple, you need to pour boiling water over the line of the intended cut, and then wipe the excess water with a rag so that the moisture-resistant plywood does not exfoliate. After that, you can start sawing the material, the cut will be even and smooth.

You can also apply another method. Before sawing, it is necessary to cut the plywood with a sharp knife at the place of the future cut. You just need to make two cuts - 1-2 mm apart. The distance depends on the thickness of the hacksaw, in particular on the thickness of the cut that the hacksaw leaves. These incisions are preferably performed in several steps. The first is a slight pressure on the knife, the second incision is a stronger pressure, the third is an even greater effort. These manipulations are performed in order to avoid breaking the knife, damaging the material. Well, then - a clean cut with your favorite hacksaw.

Guided by these simple rules, you can learn how to cut plywood with high quality and clearly.

Laser and milling cutting of plywood

Laser cutting of plywood is a way of cutting this material. Curly cutting of plywood allows you to get products of complex shapes. In addition, such carving on plywood is not expensive.

Laser cutting of plywood of different types of wood differs in beam temperature and blowing intensity. Carving plywood is a tricky job. Figured cutting of plywood and its complexity are due to the material itself. If during cutting the laser beam hits the knots in one of the veneer layers, this place may not be cut through. Thus, slotted plywood carving requires a highly skilled operator.

Carving on plywood imposes certain requirements on the material, in particular, this concerns the size of the fragment to be cut, the thickness of the workpiece, and more. To use self-tapping screws for plywood, holes are first drilled in the material. When screwing in a self-tapping screw, it is necessary to prevent the penetration of its cap into the face veneer of plywood. If you plan to use self-tapping screws with domed caps, you need to purchase washers.

Today, there are two plywood cutting technologies: rough and finish. Rough trimming involves only cutting to a format, has low accuracy. Fine cutting allows you to additionally cut parts with great accuracy.

How to cut plywood?

Before cutting plywood, you need to choose a cutting method. It can be hand cut or woodworking tools. Since plywood board has an adhesive that affects the wear of cutting tools, it is better to use a carbide tool. Laser cutting plywood provides the best results. Cutting plywood is best done with a saw.

Milling cutting of plywood is performed in the manufacture of furniture and decorative parts. Milling plywood allows you to get elements of complex configurations and shapes. Often, plywood milling is used where manual cutting is unable to withstand complex lines of breaks and transitions.

As noted above, laser cutting of plywood, the price of which is not high, does not require significant material costs. The number of parts has almost no effect on the final cost.

As mentioned above, laser cutting and milling plywood is not as expensive as it might seem at first glance, therefore, in recent years, perforated plywood, which is made either by laser cutting ordinary plywood, or by stamping a ready-made plywood semi-finished product, has gained wide popularity.

wood laser cutting technology

Laser cutting of wood does not require the creation of any special conditions for cutting wood. Conventional CO2 lasers (the so-called gas lasers) are used for it. Since wood is a flammable material, the cut zone is cooled by constant air blowing so that a flame does not occur. The blower also avoids the formation of deposits and achieves the cleanest cut possible. In addition, thanks to the air supply, the smallest particles of the burnt material do not clog the air, but immediately enter the ventilation.

You can cut wood of almost any thickness - it all depends on the power of the laser. True, it is not advisable to cut very thick workpieces with a laser. And here's why: the beam is not straight, it has an "X-shaped" shape. The thinnest cut is formed at the intersection of the rays. Therefore, with a large workpiece thickness, the slot will have a semicircular shape due to beam distortion. The thicker the workpiece, the more noticeable it is, therefore, in such cases, other technologies are used.

Basic rules for preparing drawings for laser cutting wood

The basis for laser cutting wood is a drawing of the part, which must be submitted in electronic form (AutoCAD 14, in *.dwg and (or) *dxf format).

A part is a closed outer contour, inside which there are holes (of any shape) and slots. Slots (of any shape) - an open cut - can protrude beyond the edge of the outer contour.

The part and the cut holes have the size that is included in the drawing. Accuracy 0.05 mm. The cutting width for 4 mm thick wood is approximately 0.1 mm. It should also be taken into account that, together with a tie-in into a tree, a hole is formed with a diameter much larger than the width of the cut.

Offers on the possible arrangement of parts on the sheet are not required. Nesting details can be agreed upon.

The material supplied for cutting must be 10 mm (minimum 5 mm) larger than the outer contour of the part.

* If you have a drawing in any other format or made on paper, then the cost of translation into one of the four formats will be 500 rubles. at one o'clock.
Material requirements for wood laser cutting

The maximum size of the cut out fragment is 2900*1450 mm.
The customer's material must be cut into pieces no larger than 3000*1500mm.
Possible workpiece thickness from 3mm to 50mm.
The workpiece must have technological fields of at least 5 mm in size from the outer contour of the cut image.
The customer's material must have a deviation from the plane of not more than 5 mm.

Various types of wood

Different types of wood cut differently. Each breed needs a certain beam temperature and blowing intensity. It all depends on the qualifications of the personnel servicing the laser installation: it is the machine operator who must set the parameters necessary for processing this material. Soft woods are easier to cut, and when working with hard woods, you need more beam power and strong blowing. In order not to spoil the main workpiece, test cuts and burns are first made on a sample of the material, the machine is debugged in accordance with specific requirements.

If, when cutting a wooden plate, the beam hits the knots, a marriage ("non-cut") may occur, since the knots are denser than the base. This is true for any type of wood. However, for fine work, such as the manufacture of carved architraves, wood with knots is not used.

But the most capricious "breed" of wood is ordinary plywood. Not only does it always consist of layers of different quality, it also contains adhesive inclusions that burn stronger than wood. Therefore, laser cutting plywood is very difficult. It requires the highest qualification of the operator, but one cannot do without "communication" with this material. It is from plywood that more cornices are made for interior decoration. As a rule, they are not made by hand.

The use of plywood products

The scope of carved plywood products is very large, because wooden objects have always been famous for their natural beauty. Often, products carved from wood are used for interior decoration and landscape decoration of household plots. A variety of panels, furniture elements, floor and wall decorations - everywhere where the designer's eye was directed, you can see plywood decor. Also, carved wood products are used as souvenirs: various coasters, diplomas, frames, and so on.
Advantages of laser cutting over other methods of exposure:

clarity and evenness of the cut, which will not need to be polished after processing on laser equipment;
high cutting speed, compared with other methods of exposure;
the possibility of obtaining a wide variety of shapes and lines, the thickness of the resulting elements will be the most minimal;
laser cutting of plywood, the price of which will please any customer, will allow you to create a product of any complexity, and its cost will not change from this.

The work of a designer in a broad sense implies that a person has a developed imagination, the ability to generate creative ideas and embody them in the form of objects that have a completely utilitarian purpose. Ease of processing, the ability to create amazing things from an affordable and inexpensive material have elevated plywood to the rank of favorites among many modern fashion furniture and interior designers.

You can make any things out of plywood: furniture, boxes, decorations, everything that has enough imagination and carpentry skills.

You can make almost anything you want out of plywood with your own hands. Even the hulls of small boats are made from its moisture-resistant variety. Finished with plastic or veneer of expensive wood species, plywood is used in interiors both as a finish and for the manufacture of furniture. Durable and cheap, environmentally friendly material is also suitable for making children's toys, garden design solutions, food storage boxes and various small things.

Manufacturing technology

Types of plywood boxes and ways to connect the walls.

In order for the product to serve for a long time and look attractive enough, you need to know the rules for processing the material from which it will be made. Unlike solid wood, plywood is thin sheets of veneer glued together so that the fibers of one layer are perpendicular to the direction of the fibers in the other. This allows the sheets to be bent in any direction, creating complex shapes. But when sawing across the fibers of the top layer, there is a possibility of damaging it. Therefore, when working with plywood, you need to follow a few simple rules:

  • to prevent cracking of the surface when cutting across the fibers, you must first make an incision with a knife along the cutting line;
  • before driving nails or screwing screws, drill holes for them;
  • washers should be placed under the caps of the fasteners;
  • when gluing the surface, it is necessary to clean it with sandpaper, apply glue in an even layer over the entire surface and ensure uniform compression of the parts to be joined;
  • to bend the elements, they are pre-moistened or steamed, after which they are placed in a template and kept in the desired position for at least a day;
  • thin plywood (up to 1.5 mm) is cut with a sharp knife, sheets up to 6 mm thick are sawn with a jigsaw, and thicker ones with a circular saw;
  • the edges of the cut parts may have burrs when cutting at home, which requires their mandatory processing with a file or grinder.

To make almost any plywood item, you will need a small set of tools:

  • sharp knife, electric jigsaw with a set of files;
  • drill, a set of drills and bits, a screwdriver;
  • joiner's glue or suitable for working with wood;
  • file, sandpaper;
  • measuring tool, pencil;
  • fasteners.
