How to choose the right wool blanket. Quilted blankets

As part of the rolling study of Roskachestvo, the parameters of quality and safety of products of 29 brands of quilts were studied. These are products under the trademarks AlViTEK, Asabella, BELASHOFF, Dargez, Dream Time, ECOTEX, German Grass, Kariguz, MONA LIZA, Nature's, OL-TEX, Primavelle, Sortex, Togas House of Textile, Horizon, Light dreams, Couch potato, Podushkino, Pierrot, Samson, TekStil, A "Elite, IKEA, Everyday, Tex-Design, Comfort line, Green Line, VEROSSA, SonTex. The study involved the most popular among Russians one and a half and double blankets with artificial and mixed fillers, produced both in Russia and abroad. We figure out which blanket to choose.

Russian quality system standard

The Roskachestvo standard for quilted blankets is identical to GOST according to a number of requirements and has a tightening in terms of the linear dimensions of the product, the content of free formaldehyde and paint resistance to various influences. But, unlike GOST, the Roskachestvo standard included additional qualitative characteristics, according to which the samples presented in the rolling study were evaluated. In particular, a blanket applying for the Russian Quality Mark must effectively retain heat, be resistant to static electricity and washing, have no unpleasant odor, and have a high-quality and symmetrical pattern (if any). Among other things, the blanket had to successfully pass the so-called. "cigarette test", during which the fire resistance of the product is studied. The required level of localization of production for the award of the Russian Quality Mark is at least 45% of the cost of goods.

colorful dreams

Some consumers choose not to use duvet covers, so the appearance of the duvet, its color and the presence of patterns for them become the defining characteristic of the product. At the same time, it should be understood that bright and colorful low-quality blankets under various mechanical influences can “give away” their dyes. This means that with low color fastness, the fabric of the blanket will lose its color, but this is not so bad - an unstable dye in the form of dust can get on the skin, including a child, which increases the risk of irritation and allergic reactions. The requirements for color stability of the material are laid down in the mandatory technical safety regulations, but they have been tightened in the standard of the Russian quality system. The fabric dye was tested for stability when exposed to sweat, washing and dry rubbing. Most of the samples presented in the study passed this stage of laboratory tests with dignity. Exception - branded product Every day. The problems with color fastness in this blanket were revealed on a large scale: the paint was actively separated from the material when exposed to sweat, washing, and dry rubbing. As a result of laboratory tests, this sample was found to be inconsistent with the requirements of the technical regulations for product safety in terms of color fastness.

It is important to note that one third of the quilts presented in the fan study were white; did not contain dyes. The study of color fastness in these samples, respectively, was not carried out.

Reference

During laboratory tests, the toxicity index of materials, pH level, odor intensity and the presence of free formaldehyde in tissues were also determined in each of the samples. According to the results of the study, these parameters in all samples were within the normal range.

Rich inner world

Today on the market in a huge assortment of blankets with various fillers are presented: from camel wool to synthetic polyester fibers. The Roskachestvo standard allows the use of any insulation in products: chemical, natural or mixed. The main thing in this case is not to mislead the consumer: the composition indicated on the packaging must correspond to the actual composition of the product. According to the results of independent laboratory tests, labeling problems have been found in many manufacturers of blankets. For example, product packaging Mona Liza, informed that the fabric of the top of the product was 80% cotton, while in fact it was found only 52%. Blanket filler Tex design, according to the label, was a mixture of cotton and polyester fibers in a ratio of 50:50. However, according to test results, the amount of synthetic fibers in the sample was almost 90%. Sample comfort line The label "said" that the filler of this blanket was 70% wool and 30% polyester. In reality, the ratio of natural and non-natural components was the opposite - wool 23%, and polyester 77%. Blanket filler light dreams, according to the label, consisted of "bamboo fiber", although in fact it was found to contain 74% polyester. The products of these manufacturers are counterfeit, about which Roskachestvo notified the relevant regulatory authorities.

Important!

The vast majority of blankets studied were marketed as "made from bamboo" by manufacturers. The packages of many products were generously decorated with images of a plant, the inscriptions "Bamboo", "Bamboo", "Bamboo", bamboo plants formed the basis of the printed pattern on the fabric of the blanket. At the same time, natural bamboo fiber (i.e., a fiber obtained mechanically from bamboo stalks using biotechnology, which has a number of unique properties) was not found in any of the materials tested. As laboratory tests showed, under the bright packaging with a bamboo print, a mixture of fibers was hidden, traditionally used as fillers for blankets and pillows: polyester fiber and viscose fiber, the content of the latter, as a rule, did not exceed 30%. Therefore, the Bamboo label should most often be treated as a marketing tool.

To the brim

Each of the presented blankets was studied for quality "laying" of the filler. The parameters of its location are not regulated in any way by the current technical regulations, but these requirements are laid down both in GOST and in the standard of the Russian quality system. According to these elevated standards, the filler must be distributed over the entire surface of the blanket strictly evenly, tightly adhering the edges to the corners of the top layer of the product. At the same time, it does not matter with the help of what technologies the manufacturer achieves such a result - additional stitching along the edges or processing over the entire area of \u200b\u200bthe blanket, the main thing is a quality result. In most samples, the insulation was laid evenly and fixed at the edges, i.e. the thickness of the blankets was the same over the entire surface. In 6 samples, the filler was unevenly distributed; along the edges of these blankets, the material had already begun to “knock” into lumps even before the start of actual operation. Products with such a “feature” cannot qualify for the Russian Quality Mark.

Reference

An additional requirement laid down in the Roskachestvo standard was the so-called "cigarette test", during which the level of flammability of bedding was determined. All blankets in the study were labeled as "non-flammable" products. All products passed this test: according to the results of the “cigarette test”, during which a lit cigarette lay on the surface of the blanket for 7 seconds, not a single product ignited.

Humid climate

The hygroscopicity of linen fabric is determined by its ability to easily absorb moisture released by human skin and evaporate it, providing the body with the necessary level of hygiene. Quite strict mandatory requirements are imposed on the hygroscopicity of materials, however, Roskachestvo in its standard has tightened these parameters by one and a half times. Thus, a blanket can become a contender for the Russian Quality Mark, the operation of which is guaranteed to provide a comfortable state of a person. Most of the samples presented in the fan study corresponded to these increased requirements of Roskachestvo. However, laboratory tests have revealed unsafe products. Brand Blankets Dreamtime, GreenLine, SonTeks in terms of hygroscopicity, they did not meet the requirements of the technical regulations on safety. Low values for this parameter in these samples can lead to a violation of the microclimate of the body under the covers, which will negatively affect human hygiene and, possibly, his health. Information about four violators of the regulations was transferred to Rospotrebnadzor.

In the course of laboratory tests, an impressive deviation in the hygroscopicity parameter was found in a number of samples, and in a positive direction. That is, the blankets had such a huge potential for absorbing moisture that the materials declared on the packaging, whether synthetic or natural, could not physically provide. The experts conducted an additional study of the hygroscopicity of such blankets, after washing them. As a result, the value of the indicator "hygroscopicity" decreased by a factor of: MONA LIZA (decrease in the level of hygroscopicity by 4 times), Togas House of Textile (decrease in the level of hygroscopicity by 3 times), Horizon (decrease in the level of hygroscopicity by almost 6 times), Podushkino (decrease in the level of hygroscopicity almost 2 times), Pierrot (decrease in the level of hygroscopicity by 3 times), Every day (decrease in the level of hygroscopicity by almost 2.5 times). A sharp decrease in an important hygienic indicator after washing indirectly indicates that some manufacturers used fabrics treated with substances that increase the hygroscopicity of the textile material for the manufacture of blankets.

Know the limits

A blanket can be very beautiful, pleasant to the touch, have the most expensive filler and, at the same time, cover a person exclusively with waves of irritation - in the event that its dimensions do not fit the dimensions of the bed and the height of the person. However, information about the size of a product in a store can usually be read only from the label, and these data, as the experience of Roskachestvo has shown, can differ from reality, and significantly. At the same time, it is important to note that the size of the blanket does not apply to the mandatory requirements of the technical regulations - the manufacturer can independently set these values in any order. However, the dimensions, and most importantly, the allowable deviations in them and the aspect ratio of the product are clearly indicated in GOST and the Roskachestvo standard (and the requirements of the latter are tougher), so products that claim to be high-quality must fit into the designated parameters. Products of 15 brands did not meet these requirements. A discrepancy in size can be an unpleasant surprise after buying and unpacking a blanket at home.

A blanket is a bedding that is used to cover while sleeping. If the product can also serve as a bedspread or a cape in a cold room, it is called a blanket. There are a huge number of types of blankets, so when choosing, you need to understand exactly which option and for what purposes you need it. Consider the main criteria and recommendations on which one is better to choose.

TOP criteria when choosing a blanket

Which blanket to buy is your choice, but when choosing, you need to focus on comfort, the presence of allergies, and whether to choose artificial material or natural. The most important and, in fact, the only criterion is convenience. However, this parameter is subjective and may consist of a variety of requirements:

Winter and summer (warm and thin)

Season. First of all, you need to decide for what time of the year the product is selected. Blankets are:

  • Winter - the warmest and thickest. As a rule, they cannot be used in summer;
  • Summer is an easy option. The degree of lightness must be determined by the user - a cotton or wool product retains heat to varying degrees;
  • Double-sided - stitching from different materials is formed from different sides. Suitable for any season, but in regions with a temperate or warm climate;
  • 4 seasons - a blanket in two parts, which are connected with buttons. In warm weather, one part is used, in cold weather, both. If the winter is characterized by severe frosts or the heating in the apartment leaves much to be desired, you cannot do without a real winter dress.

Weight: light and heavy

This is important for both children and adults. A blanket that feels heavy is no longer comfortable. It is comfortable to sleep under a heavy blanket only with sufficiently developed muscles. Overweight during sleep is not recommended for those suffering from heart failure and pulmonary diseases. Heavy products include products with cotton filler, camel and sheep wool. To light ones - with fillers made of eiderdown or goose down, synthetic fibers.

Natural or artificial: sheep wool, bamboo, camel down

Hypoallergenic and natural - most natural materials can cause an allergic reaction. This is due to the fact that natural fibers are not as smooth as synthetic or artificial ones. When used, the smallest particles of wool are separated and irritate the skin and mucous membranes. The situation is paradoxical, but artificial fillers are hypoallergenic.

  • Natural: sheep and camel wool, silk, cotton, bamboo.
  • Artificial: acrylic, holofiber, vitasan, medisan. It also matters how the fiber is produced. The use of certain substances in the manufacturing process will negate the hypoallergenic qualities.

The choice of a blanket is based on the main criteria: season, weight, hypoallergenicity, breathability, naturalness of the filler.

Filler, sewing type - quilted or not

Breathability - in a dream, a person sweats, and moisture is absorbed by sheets and a blanket. And if the latter does not conduct air and moisture, then an unpleasant microclimate with high humidity and temperature forms under it. This quality is determined by two factors:

  1. The nature of the fiber - air and vapor permeability are more characteristic of natural materials. To provide the same qualities to artificial fibers, special measures must be taken;
  2. Distribution - in the non-woven version, this problem is solved by the manufacturing method. In the filler, the probability of movement is lumps, there is always. The problem is solved by tailoring methods - with varying degrees of success.
  3. Sewing method - if a filled blanket is used for sleeping, the distribution of the material matters. The volume of the product is quite large, and if the filler is not held by anything, it quickly clumps. This is not only not aesthetically pleasing, but also not practical: the fiber loses its structure, does not retain air, and, therefore, ceases to retain heat.

Firmware is carried out in three ways:

Quilt blanket. This is the worst way to stitch, as the spacing between stitches is quite large and the filler is bunched up along those stripes.

On special equipment, the product is stitched in one direction.

Cassette - the blanket is stitched in such a way as to form separate small sections, beyond which the filler does not move. The width and length of the sections are determined by the filling material: on duvets, for example, the dimensions of the cassettes should be in the range of 10 * 10 or 15 * 15 cm.

Karostep. The disadvantages of the method include the fact that the finished product is stitched, and over time, the filler will be visible through the holes left by the needle.

The stitch is made in the form of a pattern, forming cells with different sizes.

Comfort does not mean just warmth, but exactly the kind of warmth that is required in the room. Therefore, they distinguish winter, summer or off-season products.

In this case, one must also take into account their own ability to thermoregulate. If a person tolerates cold well, there is no need to overheat under a thick blanket, and if not, it is desirable to have a thin camel down blanket for summer.

The size

A short or oversized blanket is exceptionally uncomfortable. Before choosing, you need to accurately determine the required dimensions, as well as pay attention to the nature of sleep: if the sleeper often turns over, changes position, then the blanket should be chosen square. Many people prefer Euro size blankets. Blanket sizes: euro and double can be found.

Price

Cost - in this matter, only a general recommendation can be given: it is better to have one high-quality blanket than 5 low-quality ones.

Which blanket is better to choose for winter and which for summer

This question should rather be formulated as follows: how efficient is the heating in the apartment, and how hot is it outside in summer. Well, or how good the air conditioner is.

Video: how to choose a good winter and summer blanket

The video describes in detail which blankets should be used in winter and summer:

Winter options

But usually for winter, even with good heating, they choose products that are denser or with fillers:

  • Down - in the first place eiderdown, then goose, and then duck or its combination with goose, as well as artificial down. The duvet is unusually light, soft, perfectly warm, conducts air and has better hygroscopicity: it absorbs moisture and removes it. Caring for him is quite simple: 2 times a year you need to dry thoroughly in the sun and ventilate. This is the perfect winter blanket, but unfortunately not available to those who are allergic to feathery down.
  • Wool - such a blanket is made in two versions: in the form of a woven wool blanket or as a product with a wool filler. The second product belongs to the winter ones, but the woven one can serve both in winter and summer. Moreover, woven from wool will be denser and heavier, and made from camel down has practically no weight. The disadvantage is the same as that of down: those suffering from an allergy to wool cannot use this wonderful product. Wool absorbs moisture well and conducts air, warms and maintains the microclimate under the blanket. The material has a slight massage effect and has a very beneficial effect on the joints. Read about how to choose a camel wool blanket.

Warm blanket filled with natural wool.

  • Cotton wool - is made on the basis of cotton, so it does not cause irritation. The material retains heat well, but does not conduct air well, its structure is easily broken: cotton wool is knocked down in clods and compacted. The blanket has a considerable weight and is not erased.
  • Synthetic fillers - synthetic winterizer, holofiber. They are characterized by low weight with a high ability to retain heat. Their hygroscopicity is low: in winter this is not a problem, but already in the off-season it becomes stuffy under the synthetic winterizer.

Summer Options

Summer blankets are thin and light. Their task is not to warm, but to preserve the microclimate and remove moisture, since in summer the tendency to sweat increases:

  • Cotton - light and thin, perfectly copes with the task: it does not cause allergies, absorbs moisture and is washed even in a washing machine.
  • Bamboo - made from bamboo fibers, it is highly hygroscopic and hypoallergenic. Bamboo fabric has an antimicrobial effect that lasts for quite a long time - up to 50 washes. By the way, you can wash it in the washing machine.
  • Silk - that is, a product with a silk filler. The ability of silk to thermoregulate is unparalleled, and the high hygroscopicity and smooth, cool surface of the product make it the best summer option. One significant drawback is the high cost. Patchwork quilts are an original and inexpensive option.

How to choose a blanket for a baby

There is only one question of principle here: does the child have an allergy and, if so, to what materials. All other parameters coincide with the criteria for "adult" blankets.

  • Size - it is undesirable to buy a blanket for growth. Of course, a margin in length is needed, but within reasonable limits.
  • Weight - the smaller the child, the lighter his blanket should be. Wadded and even woven wool products are too heavy for the baby.
  • Seasonality - if there is no allergy, then, of course, down or woolen blankets are best suited in winter, and cotton or bamboo fiber blankets in summer. If there is, then you will have to choose a synthetic or combined material.
  • Care - the smaller the child, the better his things should be washed. The blanket is no exception, so if you have a choice, you should prefer those that are machine washable.

How to choose a blanket for a newborn

What blankets are needed for a newborn? A newborn needs three blankets: they perform different functions.

  • The blanket in the maternity hospital is the one in which he is wrapped upon discharge. In the summer, a smart envelope for discharge from the hospital in the summer is used as a “holiday package”. But in winter, you can’t do without a blanket - front or not. Ideally - a downy or wool product. Unfortunately, the issue of allergies is especially acute, since it is not known whether the baby has any allergic reactions or not. It is more rational to use synthetic winterizer.

Blanket for a newborn, good quality, will last a long time.

  • Walking blankets are essential. It is not recommended to put a blanket in a stroller for sleeping: there will be many opportunities to get it dirty on a walk. You need to choose a baby blanket for newborns - an easy-to-wash product: cotton or knitted for the warm season, synthetic winterizer for winter.
  • Sleep blanket. The best option, if there is no allergy, is wool and silk. Both materials are able to accumulate or remove heat if necessary, so children are not at risk of overheating under a woolen blanket. A summer blanket is usually thin cotton. For the off-season, it’s good to have an additional fleece: it is used over cotton. Also, many mothers for newborns prefer baby blankets. But you just need to take into account that the size of the baby blanket in the crib must correspond to the size of the crib.

Cooling and overheating are equally bad for the newborn. At first, you need to carefully observe his reaction in order to choose the best option.

Good sleep is one of the basic human needs. He spends a third of his life in sleep. According to scientists, quality bedding, pillows and blankets are important for a normal restorative sleep. Therefore, choosing a good blanket, you need to take into account its quality characteristics.

What criteria should be used to choose a blanket

By choosing the best blanket, you can ensure a healthy and comfortable sleep for many years to come. Knowing the indicators that characterize this subject for sleep from different angles will simplify the choice.

Sewing method

Sewing blankets with filler is done in two ways:

  1. Stitch method. This method of sewing consists in making parallel vertical and horizontal quilting seams over the entire area of the product, connecting several layers of fabric and filler. The quilt has a border around the perimeter.
  2. cassette method. Sewing by this method consists in sewing partitions between two layers of fabric, forming separate sections-cassettes, which are filled with a downy mixture. The cassette blanket cannot “knock off”, and thanks to the dense fabrics used to sew it, the filler does not migrate outward.

Cassette sewing method

Dimensions

The composition of the Russian size range of blankets has been expanded with the sizes of products from foreign manufacturers, which are produced for special types of beds with the prefix "Euro". Today, there are six parameters of blankets for adults and children in the Russian size range, which allows you to choose the best option, taking into account the size of the existing bed and the characteristics of the person's physique. To simplify the choice, the set parameters are divided into several groups:

  • for one and a half;
  • double;
  • children's;
  • for euro sizes.

Case material

For many, it is not so important what material the blanket cover is made of. What's more important is what's in the case itself. But with a good filling, a duvet can quickly become frustrating if it is uncomfortable to cover up with. For example, fluff constantly crawling out of a thin cover will create a lot of inconvenience.

Cotton covers are quite popular largely because of their versatility. With them, blankets become breathable, very soft to the touch and hygroscopic. To improve the fluff-holding characteristics, the cotton fabric is impregnated with a composition that prevents fluffs from crawling out.

Degree of warmth

A comfortable blanket should keep you warm when it's cold and cool when it's hot. Warming qualities depend not only on the cover, but also on the thickness of the filler and its density. The degree of warmth of blankets with different filling densities is as follows:

  • products are especially warm with a filler density of 420 g / m²;
  • warm with a filler density of more than 350 g / m²;
  • standard (off-season) 300-345 g \ m²;
  • lightweight 200-295 g \ m²;
  • light (for summer) 150 g \ m².

You can find out the degree of heat of a particular product by marking on the labels. It is indicated by a number from 1 to 5 or the corresponding number of points.

Anti-allergic properties

Popular down and natural wool bedding is now recognized as a source of various allergic reactions, as dust mites start and multiply in them.

Lovers of everything natural, prone to allergies, it is better to prefer silk blankets and vegetable fillers. Most modern synthetic fibers have the advantages of natural counterparts, but are free from their disadvantages. According to allergists, it is advisable for people who do not have health problems to opt for blankets with synthetic fillers.

Popular fillers pros and cons

The leaders in the market of accessories for sleep are the usual fillers for blankets made of down, feather, wool and silk. But products made from bamboo and linen fibers are becoming more and more popular with buyers. There is a high demand for synthetics, in particular, holofiber, synthetic winterizer, siliconized fibers due to their hypoallergenicity. Each of them has many pros and cons, the knowledge of which will help you choose a blanket with the best filler.

bird down

The most valuable filler is the down of waterfowl. Manufacturers prefer to work mainly with goose down. The advantages of goose down include:

  • volume and elasticity of the fluffs, which prevent felting of the fluffy mass;
  • fantastic lightness;
  • heat-shielding properties;
  • high hygroscopicity and guaranteed air exchange.

Duvet

The main disadvantage of goose down is its property of a potential catalyst for the development of allergies due to the presence of tiny mites in the fluffy mass. Another disadvantage is the high price of down products.

Sheep wool blanket

Sheep wool has many qualities that make it a unique filling for blankets. Due to the low thermal conductivity, wool is used as the basis of a warm blanket. Thanks to the air conduction of sheep's wool, the body breathes under them. Sheep wool perfectly absorbs moisture, while it feels dry to the touch. This valuable quality of sheep's wool gives woolen blankets healing properties.

Dry heat allows you to speed up the treatment of arthrosis, arthritis, reduce pain, restore functionality to the musculoskeletal system.

Advantages and disadvantages of a camel wool blanket

In the ranking of the popularity of natural accessories for sleep, camel blanket takes the first place. The use of new camel wool processing technologies has improved the texture of products. They have become softer, more pleasant for the body. A camel wool blanket has advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages:

  • Products for sleeping made of camel wool create "dry" heat, thanks to which the sleeping person does not overheat and does not sweat. Low heat conductivity contributes to the creation of thermal comfort for the sleeper under the blanket.
  • Good air permeability of the hair mass.
  • Camel wool is very light.
  • Thanks to the special structure of the hair, moisture is quickly absorbed and evaporates back.

Camel hair model

Disadvantages:

  • High allergenicity, since dust mites often start up in the natural hair composition.

Polyester fiber as a filler in a duvet

Polyethylene terephthalate melt-formed polyester fiber is used in the production of various fillers for sleep accessories.

The advantages of using polyester fiber are:

  • zero allergenicity;
  • great elasticity;
  • low thermal conductivity;
  • polyester fiber mass is much lighter than natural wool;

Polyester fiber is very light

  • material is designed for long-term use.

The disadvantages of using polyester fiber are:

  • close to zero air permeability;
  • low level of hygroscopicity.

Bamboo fiber blankets

This type of fiber mass is obtained by processing the bamboo stem. It is widely used in the textile industry. Fillers for blankets are made from it.

Bamboo fibers have many advantages:

  • zero allergenicity of the fiber due to the natural antibacterial properties of the plant;
  • excellent air permeability due to voids and notches formed on the surface of the fiber;
  • hygroscopicity, the fiber mass absorbs water well and quickly evaporates it, so even in the heat you feel cool;
  • Bamboo fiber blankets are heavier than only down products.

Model "Winter" made of bamboo fiber

The disadvantages of bamboo filler include the fact that, due to the high hygroscopicity, bamboo products cannot be considered the best for continuous use at high humidity. In addition, bamboo filler is short-lived.

eucalyptus fiber

Cellulose fiber (tencel) is obtained from the eucalyptus tree. This material, pleasant to the touch, is suitable for stuffing sleepwear. Eucalyptus fiber filler has a lot of advantages over other materials:

  • lack of allergenicity;
  • natural antibacterial properties;
  • the beneficial properties of fibrous mass remain unchanged for 10 years or more;
  • the porous structure of the fibers provides good air circulation;
  • The healing effect of essential oils with which eucalyptus fibers are impregnated is also important.

Eucalyptus fiber model

The disadvantage of eucalyptus filler, some consider its high cost. These items are actually very expensive. Some people don't like the lingering essential oil scent of eucalyptus sleepwear.

Cotton blanket

The fibers that make up the filler of cotton blankets are obtained from cotton. The benefits of cotton blankets usually include:

  • zero allergenicity of the product;
  • hygroscopicity;
  • natural origin;
  • good thermoregulation and low price of a blanket.

cotton blanket

The disadvantages of cotton bedding include:

  • big weight;
  • slow evaporation of moisture absorbed by cotton fiber;
  • products with cotton fillers need frequent airing and drying;
  • rapid loss of consumer qualities limits the service life of the product to two seasons.

hemp fiber

In the people, hemp fiber is called raw materials from cannabis. The fiber mass of non-narcotic hemp is used as a filler for blankets. The benefits of using hemp fiber include:

  • antibacterial properties and lack of allergenicity in hemp bedding;
  • hemp fiber perfectly absorbs moisture;
  • hemp fillers provide natural air circulation.

The only drawback is the natural rigidity of the fiber, so the hemp filler is placed in a soft cotton case.

Model with hemp filler Colibri Wellness

Silk blanket

The fibers from the silkworm cocoon are used as filler for blankets. Of the advantages of silk products, it is worth noting:

  • lack of allergenicity;
  • silk bedding is not electrified;
  • light fibrous mass freely passes air;
  • hygroscopic and dry quickly.

Made from Kingsilk silk

The disadvantages of silk blankets are the high price and thermal conductivity, which makes them not the best choice for winter.

Linen

  • natural antibacterial properties of flax;
  • lack of allergenicity;
  • good breathability and moisture absorption;
  • durability.

No shortcomings in linen products have yet been identified.

Choice by season

Of course, it is important to choose sleep accessories that are hypoallergenic, heat-retaining, hygroscopic, with good air permeability. But besides this, there are nuances that should be considered when choosing a blanket for a particular season.

For the winter

Among the bedding with different fillers, there are many that you can choose for a cold winter. By marking in the form of dots on the label for the product, you can find out about the degree of its heat transfer. Many doubt when choosing a blanket for sleeping, which is better in terms of warmth for the cold season. It is impossible to answer this question unambiguously. The choice depends on individual preferences. But in any case, the degree of heat must be at least 4.

For winter, the best duvet sewn in a cassette way. A woolen or polyester product with a cover made of cotton, teak or satin is also suitable. These materials can provide maximum thermal insulation.

For summer

For warm summer nights, light quilts with silk or one of the vegetable fillers are the best. Covers are better to choose from natural fabrics. You should not count on a good rest in the summer under a woolen blanket or on a synthetic winterizer. But a downy product with a degree of warmth up to 2 is quite suitable for summer.

For all seasons

When deciding which blanket would be better to choose for all seasons, you should focus on products with vegetable filler. Although woolen, down or synthetic fillers of low density are also suitable. Optimum third degree of heat. Under such a blanket in cool weather it will be warm, and in summer it will not be too hot. A silk cover will create a slight feeling of coolness, while a cotton or teak cover will help keep you warm.

One of the main criteria for dividing into species is related to the degree of warmth. The labels use a different notation system: specific words or dots from one to five.

Separation of blankets according to the degree of warmth:

  • 5 points, an especially warm blanket is a product for winter and an apartment where there is poor heating or for those who sleep with open windows. Such a model is necessarily fluffy, but light;

  • 4 points(warm blanket) and 2 points(lightweight blanket) - intermediate indicators, demi-season. The first is suitable for autumn, when it is still not very cold, and the second for the time when it begins to gradually warm up;

  • 3 points, normal or all season. The most optimal indicator of heat and universal for almost everyone. This blanket is suitable for both winter and warmer seasons. Such a product should have an increased level of thermoregulation in order not only to warm, but also to provide air access to the body.

Among the models for all seasons, the most optimal are double ones with buttons, buttons or ties. If necessary, the two parts can be connected to insulate or, conversely, separated. At the same time, they are different in their characteristics: one part is summer, and the other is insulated;

  • 1 point, light or summer blanket. It well absorbs and evaporates moisture, provides ventilation.

Blanket shape mostly rectangular and, more rarely, square. Straight lines make the product more comfortable to use and evenly placed on the bed.

Round or oval products are not common, but they are suitable for non-standard beds. The difficulty lies in the fact that it is difficult for them to choose bedding. The original models include a blanket-coat with sleeves, which you can literally put on yourself to be warmer.

Blankets vary in thickness and weight. Both of these characteristics are directly dependent on the material of the filler. The statement that the thicker the product, the warmer it is, is true only if they are made of the same material.

And yet, the thickness, one way or another, affects: summer blankets are thin, and winter ones are thick. The heaviest are wadded cotton blankets, as well as woolen ones - sheep and camel. Despite the weight, it is wool that can be called orthopedic, because they have a healing effect. The lightest ones are made of synthetics, swan and eider down.

Blankets are divided according to sewing technology, each of which is suitable for different materials. Quilts are made using a special machine that sews the cover and filler together. This method is suitable for wool, cotton, synthetic fibers, as they do not crumble.

One of the subspecies of quilted technology is karostep. The stitches are made not square, but patterned. Often the cost of such blankets is higher, since the drawing is done by hand. The disadvantage is that over time, the filler may begin to show through the stitches.

Cassette technology consists in sewing cells filled with fluff or silicone balls to each other. Thus, the material is evenly distributed over the blanket, it does not roll down. Some models are sewn in a cluster manner, which allows you to move the filler to a certain part of the product and insulate it.

In a separate group can be distinguished knitted blankets. They are both thin, for example, made of cotton thread, and thick, made of wool. For blankets, both large knitting and thin crochet are used. Recently, products in patchwork technology have been popular. It consists in creating a patchwork quilt from squares using a sewing machine. As a rule, such models are bright and festive.

Dimensions

In total, there are three main categories of blanket sizes:

  • Single. Ideal not only for those who sleep alone, but also for couples who prefer to sleep under their own covers. The width of single models starts from 140 cm, and the length can reach 205 cm.

  • One and a half sleeping. Suitable for those who sleep alone, and, for example, for children and teenagers sleeping in the same bed. It is this blanket that is most often sold in bedding sets, since, in fact, it is universal. The most popular sizes in this category are 155 cm wide and 215 cm long. There are also less common options: 160x205 cm, 160x220 cm.

  • Double. These models of blankets are the largest, and therefore two adults can easily fit under them at once. There are two standardized sizes: 175x205 cm and 200x220 cm.

In addition to the three main types, there are several more, among which, for example, baby blankets. Such models have sizes from 110-140 cm wide and 140 cm long.

Type "euro-maxi" includes duvets that will fit king size beds. Their size is 220 cm wide and 240 cm long.

In the list standard according to GOST, there are the following positions: 75x100, 100x150, 150x200, 180x240, 200x240, 220x240, 280x240, 300x240 cm.

Colors

The color of the blanket depends on the cover, which is most often made in white and gray shades. They are the most neutral and accurate. Some covers can be decorated with patterns, for example, images of pandas often appear on bamboo blankets. Color options are found if expensive or spectacular fabrics, such as jacquard and silk, are used as a cover.

Covers are much more varied. All kinds of shades are used for them: from red to a complex multi-color pattern. Particularly bright are patchwork quilts with drawings and even photographs.

Fillers

All fillers can be divided into two broad categories: natural and synthetic.

Although silk blankets are most often all-weather, they are most suitable for a warm period. Among the shortcomings can be called a high price and whimsical material. It requires careful handling, storage and delicate care.

  • Down or feather blankets are also natural. They are made from the down of swans, geese, ducks, and eider down is considered especially valuable. Such products are light, fluffy, perfectly retain heat, and therefore are ideal for the cold season. They have excellent hygroscopicity and air circulation. Such a blanket can last up to 20 years. In high humidity, this material may become damp.

  • Quite often you can find blankets from swan's down, however, it is nothing but polyester fiber, that is, an artificial material. Like natural down, it is light, warms well, and caring for it is much easier. In addition, it does not cause allergies, does not climb, but it can be electrified. The material absorbs moisture worse than natural.
  • Another natural material bamboo, or rather, yarn made from its fibers. Among its advantages: low weight, hypoallergenicity, a good indicator of moisture absorption and heat retention. In addition, it does not electrify and repels dust. Such a blanket serves for a long time, while it is completely unpretentious in its care. The disadvantages include the fact that often under the guise of a bamboo blanket they sell a synthetic fake.

  • There are "exotic" fillers, which include eucalyptus fiber and seaweed. Many attribute to them almost healing properties. In general, such products are light in weight, help to create a microclimate favorable for sleep. Depending on the density of the material, there are both summer and winter options. A separate plus is the ease of care and washing.

  • natural cotton blankets do not cause allergies, absorb moisture well and circulate air, are affordable. The ability to keep warm in this material is average. Cotton is easy to care for and accepts even washing in a typewriter, does not accumulate dust, does not electrify. These horse blankets are perfect for spring and summer, and some models can be used without a duvet cover.
  • Cotton includes cotton products. They are inexpensive, but much heavier and serve more for the winter. They have a lot of weight, and also have a tendency to dampen and crumple.

  • Another natural material is wool. It can be not only a blanket filler, but also act as an independent bedspread and blanket. They make such a product from camel, sheep and cashmere wool, while the first two are heavier in weight. This material is warm, well absorbs moisture, air circulates. Such a blanket can last up to 15 years. The disadvantages include the fact that wool is an allergen. In addition, it requires frequent washing.

  • Fiber- silicone synthetic fiber in the form of balls. This form of material allows the blanket to remain in its original form for a long time. Fiber is as soft as down and not very expensive.
  • holofiber is an intertwined hollow spiral. It is one of the most widely used materials. Holofiber holds its shape well, but does not absorb moisture.
  • Ecofiber– twisted fibres, 100% polyester. Like other synthetic materials, it is lightweight, affordable, and retains its shape. Thanks to the silicone treatment, it quickly evaporates moisture. In addition, this is an orthopedic type of filler, due to which the blanket takes the shape of the body.

  • Synthetic fillers quite popular, although not all of them are of good quality. Among their advantages are low price, softness and lightness, however, they tend to quickly roll down and lose their shape. Another significant drawback is that the synthetic winterizer is a non-breathable material.
  • microfiber soft and elastic, well absorbs moisture, but provides poor air circulation. This is a material that is easy to care for - just wash it in a typewriter. Some duvets are a sheet of fabric, with no filling or outer cover. These are bedspreads and blankets familiar to everyone, on which duvet covers can also be put on.

  • fleece blanket very soft, plush in texture, pleasant to the touch. The material itself is synthetic. In terms of its heat retention qualities, it is similar to wool, but it absorbs moisture worse. It is easy to store, carry with you in the car, as well as wash and dry.
  • flannel blanket many associate with children. They are made from cotton and wool materials. This coverlet has a fleecy texture. The fabric is soft and pleasant, holds color well and absorbs moisture. Of the minuses of flannel, the formation of pellets and long drying stand out.

  • waffle bedspread made from cotton fabric. A feature is the texture, which is a rectangular relief. This blanket has a high rate of hygroscopicity.
  • They look especially chic fur blankets. This is a real luxury that few can afford. Bedspreads are made from the fur of rabbits, sables, foxes, coyotes, minks, raccoons.

Textiles and texture of covers

The quality of the entire product, its strength and service life largely depend on the outer shell. It is very important that the material from which the cover is made retain heat, as well as provide the necessary ventilation. The more fluffy the texture of the filler, the denser the cover should be, and vice versa: it can be soft if the filler is soft and uniform. Optional, but desirable is the coincidence of the composition of the filler and cover.

  • teak fabric weave from linen, cotton, hemp fiber. This is a wear-resistant, durable material, and a blanket made of it holds its shape well. A teak blanket can last more than ten years.

  • satin– thin and light, with a pleasant smooth texture. This fabric is made from cotton material and less often from silk. Sateen provides air circulation, easily takes the form of a body.
  • Cases from satin and silk they are expensive, but they look very impressive. They pleasantly cool the skin, so this product can be used in the summer.

  • Twill It is made mainly of cotton, less often wool is mixed. This is a durable, dense, pleasant to the touch fabric. Has a matte texture. Products made from such material are reliable and last a long time.
  • Percale made of cotton, and its feature is not the interlacing of threads, but their gluing with a special compound. The fabric has a smooth texture, high strength and density. She is very wear resistant.

  • pique material it is distinguished by complex weaving, which forms a geometric pattern. This fabric is knitted, while it is the most unpretentious of this category. Pique is a strong, durable material that is not prone to wrinkling.
  • One of the most luxurious jacquard material, because it is famous for embossed patterns on its surface. The composition of the fabric may include cotton or synthetic fibers. Jacquard is a dense, wear-resistant material with a good indicator of thermoregulation.

  • Batiste made from cotton threads. This fabric is airy and light. The cambric duvet is soft, pleasant and conforms well to the shape of the body.

It would seem that choosing a new blanket for yourself is as easy as shelling pears. We now do not have ancient Russia, when a blanket was considered a great luxury. The happy owners of this item took care of it and passed it on by inheritance or as a dowry, if the bride from a wealthy family ...

Difficulties of choice

The abundance that stores meet the buyer is striking in the variety of shapes and colors. So, the blankets and rugs we need, visible through pretty transparent suitcases, seem so attractive. Yes, everyone is so cozy, you want to wrap yourself in everyone - designers do not eat their bread in vain. But, unfortunately, the presentation does not always guarantee the quality of blankets. Some copies should not be purchased in any case, even if it was planned to purchase, so to speak, an economy option. An unsuccessful choice can cost us not only wasted money, but also nerves, and even health. Agree, it’s a shame to feel overwhelmed all day without getting enough sleep because of some kind of blanket.

In order not to get confused, looking at the shelves of a textile store, you need to think at home which blanket is better to choose. In many ways, everything will depend on individual preferences. Someone will fit a warmer blanket, and someone will be happy with a thin summer version. And if we are talking about a couple, maybe it is better to buy two blankets so as not to spend nights in battles for their place in the warmth? Another important question: how much of your time are you willing to donate to caring for a blanket? Some are easy to care for, while others are infrequent, but require some time and effort.

To answer all these questions, you need to figure out what kind of blankets exist. Let's try to highlight the "strong" and "weak" sides of each type.

What are the blankets. Size, thickness, shape

Blanket sizes

Single blankets can be combined into one group with one and a half. According to GOST, the width of such products is 140–160 cm, and the length is 205–215 cm. The dimensions in centimeters on the packaging are noted by the domestic manufacturer, while the Europeans mark them as 1-bed, 1.5-bed.

Together under such a blanket is cramped. But this is a suitable option for not very large people sleeping alone, or for a grown child. For heroes, of course, more blankets are needed. Also, this choice will please spouses who like to sleep each under their own blanket, and certainly if the couple sleeps on the beds moved together.

By the way, doctorsrecommend to sleepunderown blanket to everyone, and especially to people suffering from sleep disorders. Wrapped in a blanket, a person creates his own, special, comfortable microclimate under it, which may not suit the person sleeping next to him. It may not be very romantic, but in reality, many couples prefer that everyone have their own blanket.

A witty man gave advice to a couple who were fighting over a blanket. He said: “And you buy three blankets, sew them along the long seams, passing them under the bed. Then everyone can pull the blanket over himself at his own pleasure, even all night long, all the same, everyone will be covered. If the proposed option is not for your family, then two blankets good choice.

Double duvets , according to the same GOST, they must have a length of 200 to 220 cm. Their width is from 172 cm (the "old" version) and up to 200 cm (typical for modern products). European models are labeled 2-bed.

Blankets of this size are suitable for such happy couples, in which people feel comfortable sitting very close together. And, of course, real Russian heroes cannot do without such a large blanket, where can they fit under a one and a half!

Euro-maxi blankets have the largest size - 220x240. Some people like to sleep in beds up to 2 m wide, and these blankets are the best choice for them.

Blanket shape

The shape of the blankets is often rectangular or square. These are the most convenient to use. An exception may be the owners of an exclusive bed in the form of an oval, circle, or heart (surprisingly, this happens). True, exotic lovers should take into account that, having ordered a blanket of an unusual shape, they will also have to take care of duvet covers. You won't find these for sale. But what will you not do when the soul asks for beauty!

Blanket thickness

The thickness of the blankets also varies. Winter blankets are usually made thick, all-weather blankets are thinner. The thinnest are, of course, summer ones.

Speaking about the thickness of the blankets produced, it is necessary to dispel the myth that the thicker the blanket, the warmer it will sleep under it. To some extent, this is, of course, true if we compare blankets from the same material. When we buy a thick blanket, we want warmth. However, deciding which blanket to choose , it is more reasonable to pay attention to the material from which it is sewn.

A thin woolen blanket warms no worse than a thick cotton one. The thing is that the thermal conductivity of the blanket depends on the amount of air spaces that are placed between the particles of the filler. The more of them, the better the thing retains heat. For example, there are more fluffs of air between the fibers than between the hairs in a sheep's blanket, and there are very few of them between the threads of cotton fabric. Which of these blankets is the warmest?

Another fun fact: the presence of a duvet cover makes the duvet warmer. The air space between the duvet and duvet cover is kept warm.

What materials are blankets made of?

Quilts down-feather

These products are rightly considered the warmest. For those who like to rest in a cool bedroom, they will be the best choice. For example, in Germany it is believed that for the best quality rest, the temperature in the bedroom should not rise above 10 ° C. Where can you do without a warm duvet! Of course, in our country such conditions in the bedroom cannot be called traditional, but in the harsh Russian winter, coolness in the bedrooms (to say the least) is a common thing.

For stuffing such blankets, down is used from waterfowl - geese, ducks, loons. Duck blankets are cheaper than others, but lose in quality. Due to the structure of duck fluff, the blanket can gradually become lumpy. The most expensive and warmest products from the down of northern birds of loons.

The choice of such a blanket will be justified if you like to sleep in warmth, no matter what the temperature in the bedroom is. Their main qualities are the best preservation of heat and absorption of excess moisture, and the body “breathes” under such a blanket.

A conscientious manufacturer treats his high-quality blankets with special agents against harmful “fauna”, but over time, various ticks, lice and other guests still settle and breed with pleasure in the filler, and the unlucky consumer cannot understand where he has an allergy from. This is one of the reasons for the difficulties in maintaining the product. However, we will discuss the care in detail below, but for now we will consider the following type of blankets, presented in abundance on store shelves.

wool blankets

Woolen blankets can also be attributed to one of the warmest. As in the previous version, a blanket made of combed wool of sheep, and even better of camels, will provide comfort to the sleeper. It will retain heat, and absorb moisture, and will not interfere with air circulation.

All these qualities were so highly appreciated by the New Zealanders that in caring for premature babies, whose natural thermoregulation is still impaired, they use only such blankets. Both winter blankets and thinner ones are made from wool - these blankets are all-weather.

The disadvantages of this choice are similar to those that haunt us when buying a duvet. These are the notorious allergies to wool, as well as to mites and fungi, which, like us, feel great wrapped up in wool.

Cotton blankets

Cotton blankets are another type of blankets made from natural material, only vegetable. It does not cause allergies, but it also heats much worse. It is usually chosen as a summer blanket because of the well-known hygroscopic properties of cotton. A duvet cover is not needed for this blanket. Wash it in the washing machine. Interestingly, in the US, it is customary to use blankets without duvet covers, but wash them often. Sometimes Americans just put a sheet under the covers.

Wadded ones are, in general, also cotton blankets, but due to unreasonably difficult care, considerable weight and inferior qualities compared to the fillers described above, their popularity has fallen.

Bamboo Blankets

Bamboo blankets have many benefits. No allergies, hygroscopicity is beyond praise, they keep heat perfectly with sufficient filling thickness. Suitable for summer, and as an option for an all-weather blanket, if the bedroom is not very cold. In addition, they are quite easy to care for and durable.

Silk blankets

These are leaders in wear resistance, ease of maintenance and performance. Such blankets are far ahead of bamboo in quality when it comes to natural silk fillers. The only thing that can scare off the buyer is the high price.

Synthetic blankets

Synthetic fillers are also very popular. Such blankets are unjustifiably considered unworthy of attention. When deciding which blanket to choose, many are afraid of the word “synthetics” itself, although if the material is of high quality, it is also pleasant and convenient to use such a blanket. Many are happy to use them as an all-weather option. There are quite a few varieties of such fillers. Sintepon - the most budget option - has the worst qualities in comparison with the more expensive holofiber. In addition, synthetic fillers more “fall” into clods over time. But such a blanket can still be a very good choice, if only because it is hypoallergenic and easy to wash in a washing machine.

The downside is its lower ability to absorb moisture compared to blankets made from natural filler.

"Exotic" fillers

Blankets with unusual "fillings" also find their buyer. It is customary to attribute to them the properties inherent in the filler itself. So, for lovers of the exotic, seaweed blankets with the addition of eucalyptus have been created. These fillers can be very good, but despite the assurances of the sellers, they are unlikely to be able to show their miraculous qualities when sewn into a blanket. The only truth is that eucalyptus filler is one of the warmest and most hygroscopic after down and wool. Fans of “vegetable” blankets often prefer to buy this particular option, finding it the most successful.

Blanket Outer Fabrics

The fabrics with which the blanket is covered on the outside (“covers”) can be very different. The most common are coarse calico, satin, jacquard fabrics. They make blankets with any fillers. Exceptions are products made of feathers and down. For them, they sew breastplates from dense teak so that feathers and fluffs do not appear outside.

Quilts made of natural, artificial silk and satin look very elegant. Satin blanket is pleasant to the eye and to the touch. Such an accessory can become a real decoration of the most luxurious bedroom. It is pleasant to relax under such a blanket in the summer - the satin cools the skin a little. An excellent choice as a summer blanket for people who are not prone to excessive sweating.
